Power steering went out twice and the dealership can't find the issue when the vehicle gets to the dealership. it's going out in the highway and the roadway
Tl* the contact owns a 2019 ram 1500. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds the lost power steering which made it difficult to maneuver the vehicle. the contact stated that extra effort was required to maneuver the vehicle. the contact stated that a message stating power steering unavailable; service required, was displayed on the instrument panel. the vehicle was taken to hall chrysler ram located at (3152 virginia beach blvd, virginia beach va) however, the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. after retrieving the vehicle, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 16,666.
I purchased a 2019 ram 1500 two weeks ago. i quickly started experiencing power steering failures (unexpectedly), i noticed the ac didn't work, and the mirrors ratchet when adjusted. i had it looked at by a dealership where they fixed the power steering, at least temporarily. of course we didn't experience power steering problems until me and my family went on a cross country trip. intermittent power steering failures in unfamiliar area, at night, and in poor weather made traveling in my new truck very stressful. i still don't have power steering and we are getting ready to drive home from thanksgiving on saturday (in two days). this is extremely dangerous, i've had too many close calls on this trip with power steering re-engaging causing me to serve out of my lane. please help!
While driving truck at low speed, power steering stopped working, making it difficult to steer. within a minute, the power steering randomly began working again. over correction at this point could have caused a serious crash. called dealership and was told to activate assist button to have truck towed because it is not safe to drive. truck was towed to dealership for service. was told there was a recall for this issue--loose ground wire in front driver fender area. was told issue was fixed. picked up truck. within weeks, loss of power steering recurred while driving at 35-40 mph, then abruptly resumed in about a minute. again, overcorrection at this point could have resulted in serious crash. my truck has since been in the service department at the dealership and it has been over 2 months! this qualifies it as a lemon in accordance with my state's lemon law. i'm told they are not able to reproduce issue and so warranty will not allow them to work on fixing it. filed complaint with fca and a case was opened but have been bounced around to several case managers and currently no one is returning my inquiries. i have requested a full buy back. feels like a smokescreen with nothing but delays and excuses. the dealership has been outstanding, but at the moment i have lost faith in fca and the ram brand.
Lost power steering while backing up a camper trailer
I'm having an issue with the steering on my new 2019 ram 1500 new body laramie longhorn. i now have 10,000 miles on the vehicle. i noticed this when i first obtained delivery. most of my driving has been on rather straight roads with a few curves. i'm in colorado on the east side of the mountains. this week we took a trip up into the mountains. took some paved back roads and off the interstate driving. drove about 12 hours. when turning the wheel to the right for a curve in the road, the steering wheel centers correctly, as all vehicles would that are aligned properly. however, a left hand curve at just about any speed, has a catch in it. it will want to continue turning left even after i'm out of the curve. it's as if there's a high spot in a round gear or a tight cog in a gear. i have to put pressure on the wheel to pull it back. i've had the alignment checked. i mentioned something to the dealer after first noticing it, and he suggested the button that will pull back the wheel when the truck wanders out of the lane. but, it will do that when it's in function or when i disable it. the steering, i've been told, is not mechanical but electronic. i know nothing about that type of steering. i've driven trucks all my life, having a class 1 license years ago. 18 wheelers, etc.. i'm 75. never had this issue with any vehicle. any advice? i have an appointment with the dealer service department in about 10 days to take it in for a look see. this is dangerous.. my wife could not drive this vehicle. it would freak her out having to pull the steering back out of oncoming traffic.

After traveling at highway speeds, approximately 70 mph, for 10 to 20 minutes the steering will stick at around the 1100 to 1000 o'clock position during left hand turns on interstates. if left alone the steering will not realign at the 12 o'clock position and vehicle will continue to veer left . you must manually steer right past a noticeable detent in the steering path to return the wheel to correct position. the longer you drive the more noticeable the sticking becomes and more force is required to bring the wheel back to center. as the force requirement increases the increase of overcorrections occurs. this is quickly becoming very dangerous. of note is the fact this will not occur below highway speeds even after traveling at highway speeds for 20 minutes. once you go below 60 the malfunction will not duplicate. this vehicle has had all required recall repairs for ground cable prior to purchase. maintenance appointment with dealer is set within the week.
While making a slight left turn about 10 to 11 o clock steering wheel is locking up and have to force the wheel to center. very dangerous in the rain and i could only imagine what would happen in the winter time. i notice it more getting on the on ramp or back country roads with a speed range from 20 to 45 mph. the dealer crown dodge in greensboro nc says that i need to do a 4 wheel alignment to make sure right and that i have to pay for because its not covered under warranty. truck has 12160 miles. code in the system for steering angle sensor. this is unsafe and my truck has been sitting at the dealership for weeks now with no final repair.
Tl* the contact owns a 2019 ram 1500. while driving at night, the entire instrument panel illuminated and the power steering failed. the contact was able to pull over as the brakes were malfunctioning. the contact kept trying to turn off the vehicle and the instrument panel indicators kept flashing. after fifteen minutes, the vehicle finally started up and functioned normally while the indicators were still flashing. the manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact to call nhtsa. the dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 8,000.
Feels like the steering is sticking when turning left and right when turning.
Steering wheel will stick and not return to center when turning left or veering left at highway speeds and when entering on ramps to highways. this can be a serious safety issue as it takes excessive force to bring the wheel back to center, which could lead to overcompensation and eventually wrecking.
Steering sticks when in a left turn at highway speed have to forcibly recenter it when coming out of the turn it will keep turning left if pressure on the wheel is relaxed.
While my 2019 ram 1500 is in motion, it has a pull / drift to the right. the pull / drift to the right occurs when lightly holding the steering wheel or momentarily letting go of the steering wheel. the pull / drift to the right occurs on all types of road surfaces. the grade of the road does impact the pull / drift as it is exaggerated with a steeper rightward grade, however it will drive straight if the road has a slight leftward grade. with a mild rightward grade, i have to put a little leftward pressure on the steering wheel to keep it from veering right. this occurs at speeds of 10 to 80mph on city streets and highways. if the driver gets distracted for a moment, the vehicle will unintentionally change lanes or pull the vehicle off the road. i have had it serviced and the alignment checked 4 times at corwin chrysler dodge jeep ram in fargo, nd and they tell me the alignment is within spec and there is nothing else they can do. tire pressure is equal in all four tires. the service manager states a rightward pull is characteristic of new vehicles. i do not believe my vehicle, nor any anyone else's, should be pulling to the right and potentially causing a motor vehicle crash. the truck should drive straight with the exception of outside influences such as steep road grades, high cross winds, etc.
Steering wheel occasionally does not return to center when turning left. i can let go of steering wheel and it will stick in the 10 o'clock position for example.
Steering keeps intermittently sticking when turning left
While steering left and right, the power steering seems to intermittently go out, it happens off and on, and you have to hold on tightly to the steering wheel or you will loose control, i took it to the dealer and they tell me it is normal for this truck which i strongly disagreed with them, a new truck or any new car does not just loose steering
When turning the steering wheel back to the center from the left, there seems to be a catch and it resists turning. it seems to match other recalls out there, but my vin was not included in any of the current, documented recalls.
Steering sticks when turning left on curvy roads and the truck feels like its straddling a hump, this happens while driving at speeds from 5 to 40 miles an hour so far. i just picked the truck up brand new from the dealer, i will be contacting dealer to see if i can get service as soon as possible, i looked up this problem on the web, and found a few others on ram forum .com with the same problem, after several visits to the dealer the dealer replaced the steering rack which seemed to resolve there problem. the steering seems to stick while in a slight left turn and doesn't want to return to center, unless i apply more pressure to turn back to straight. also the truck feels a little wobbly, and like its straddling a hump in the road, turns to the right are fine it has no problem going right just left.*dt consumer state the answer to did it take force to return the wheel back to center is not much force, maybe a pound or two of force. the other question about any warning lights or buzzers is nothing completely silent. *jb
Was driving and my steering wheel locked up had to turn off the truck in the middle of the road. was turning in the turn lane while braking at the time
When vehicle is at highway speed and going into left hand corners, the steering wheel sticks if you go past the ten o clock position. it happens only after driving at highway speeds for a period of time. it does not happen on right turns, the wheel comes back, but intermittently. almost feels like a wobble?
Tl* the contact owns a 2019 ram 1500. on several occasions, while driving various speeds and making left turns, the steering wheel momentarily seized before returning to the center position. the contact stated that the failure was not present when making right turns. the vehicle was taken to mcclurg chrysler dodge jeep (located at 125 n center st, perry, ny 14530, (585) 969-3496) to be diagnosed, but the mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code. the mechanic was able to duplicate the failure. the contact stated that the mechanic performed minor adjustments on the front suspension and steering; however, the failure recurred. the contact stated that the failure was intermittent. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 3,200. *bf*jb
While driving for about half hour at 50mph or more the steering seems to stick when i make slight left or right turns to switch lanes or make small turns. been to the dealer 4 times for the issue and they can't find anything wrong. other owners are having the same issue.https://www.carcomplaints.com/ram/1500/2019/steering/steering.shtml#27
After ~ 1000 miles the steering wheel does not re-center while making left turns - either on exit/entry ramps (broad slow turns) or hard left turns. steering fights you to bring wheel and truck back to center. this happens after driving for at least 30 for 40 minutes and is only for left turns. it does not happen for right turns. happens after and during highway driving. when turning right, the turn happens and then the wheels naturally re-center. this is hard to describe and a short test drive does not produce the problem. it has to be driven for at least 30 minutes mostly at highway speed. this is happening frequently..
Tl* the contact owns a 2019 ram 1500. the contact received recall notifications for nhtsa campaign numbers: 19v020000 (steering) and 19v067000 (service brakes, hydraulic). apple chrysler dodge jeep ram of hanover (200 eisenhower dr, hanover, pa 17331, 717-637-1101) was unable to schedule an appointment within a reasonable time frame due to the part being on a nation-wide backorder. the manufacturer was contacted. the contact had not experienced a failure. parts distribution disconnect.
Safety recall for steering ground cable was fixed by dealer and my power steering is still intermittently going away causing steering to lock up temporarily. taking back to dealer for second time to see if they can fix it. it is not safe and almost caused me to cross the center line at 55 mph and hit a car head on.
I took my truck into the dealership for problems with the fuel economy being severely below the epa rating. while at the dealership, i found out that the dealership sold me a brand new truck with two open recalls that were unrepaired. i believe this is illegal.
While driving at highway speeds, initiating a sweeping left hand turn, like an on-ramp, the steering wheel 'sticks' to the left wanting to continue a sweeping left turn and requiring a significant pull to force recentering the truck. (describes like breaking a bolt loose). intermittent replication requiring highway speeds means dealership is writing it off as 'normal operation'.
While driving, power steering unavailable caution followed by service suspension immediately. power steering is lost while driving and intermittently comes back or is lost. i have taken to the dealership twice and they 'can't find anything wrong'. this is extremely dangerous while driving at 50-70 mph on the highways and interstate.
While driving 40 mph vehicle indicated power steering failure. power steering service needed. i was driving and could not run steering wheel approaching turn. almost died unable to turn wheel. vehicle only has 10024 miles and purchased brand new. a catastrophic accident involving my family and others could have occurred. i have looked into this via forums for 2019 ram 1500 and there seems to been multiple issues reported with similar issues. please please please follow up with fca to address power steering failure issues as deadly consequences can happen. please do not wait on this.
Steering is stiff when coming out of a left turn. very reluctant to come back to zero almost as if there is a dead spot in the steering rack itself.
Tl* the contact owns a 2019 ram 1500. while driving 50 mph, the power steering failed without warning. the failure occurred intermittently. the contact regained control and took the vehicle to boniface-hiers chrysler dodge jeep (1775 e merritt island causeway, merritt island, fl 32952, (321) 452-8181) to be diagnosed, but they were not able to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 1,350. *dt *tr
Lost power sterring twice. took to dealer with a recall i saw about 12 volt battery ground fastener may be loose. had it checked out and about 5 days later loss power sterring again. power sterring did not come back.had truck flatbeded to dealer. they said power sterring rack was shot.have to wait about 2 to3 wks. for parts and repair.the truck has about 1600 miles on it (sucks). was in parking lot first time, thank god.in driveway sec. time
Tl* the contact owns a 2019 ram 1500. the contact received a u-connect system notification for nhtsa campaign numbers: 19v020000 (steering), 19v407000 (air bags and seat belts), and 19v067000 (service brakes, hydraulic). performance dodge ram (555 mantua pike, woodbury, nj 08096, (856) 848-5008) was contacted and stated that they would follow-up with a response. the contact did not receive a response and was unable to schedule a diagnostic appointment. the manufacturer was contacted to address part availability. the contact had not experienced a failure. vin tool confirms parts not available.
Power steering went out multiple times. would work after restarting truck then go out again. took it to the dealership to fix then went back out again after servicing. also have other service messages for suspension and lane control. check engine light came in after being serviced twice. truck is now in the shop for the 4th time with more electrical issues. it throws new codes everytime. lastest codes: implausible data received from tcm, calibration mismatch, implausible data received from rf hud and from radio, battery voltage circuit voltage below threshold, implausible data received from cruise control switch, edu not initialized, implausible/missing transmission message.
Purchased truck in dec 2018. about a month in around 2000 miles started experiencing the steering wheel sticking around the 11:00 position at highway speeds. i drive 1500 to 2000 miles a month and afraid i am going to overcorrect especially in heavy traffic. spoke with dealership and they do not have a solution for the problem. had the recall taken care of on the battery cable and this did not correct the issue either. feels like a problem in the steering linkage. i have also started noticing which feels like the truck is starting to float side to side and am having to correct to keep it in the lane. this truck does not have lane assist on it so that could not be the problem.
Power steering on the vehicle failed to work with only 1,000 miles since purchased.
After driving for about 10min in town (30-50mphs) the power steering warning went off and power steering failed in traffic for about 90 sec before returning.
Steering seems to stick to the left at 40 mph and up.almost sticks at 10-11 oclock..must be forcefully returned to center line.seems to over and under steer needs to be constantly managed.it is dangerous.
The vehicle initially had a reported steering failure twice on december 19th. this was reported to nhtsa under file 1162423. the vehicle was taken to the dealer the same day. the dealer was unable to determine why this occurred. then, again on december 30th this occurred again at highway speed, almost causing a collision. immediately contacted the dealer again and the dealer was concerned over safety issue and offered a rental vehicle while inspecting the vehicle. on the way to the dealer this morning, the power steering turn off and again the message center displayed in red " power steering unavailable service required".. this was displayed on the prior occasions.... while driving slowly to the dealer this loss of steering occurred another 3 times intermittently with another warning "service air suspension immeditaley".... keep in mind that when the power steering leaves with electronic steering very little control remains. since this has been reported to the dealers and also to nhtsa numerous times from various geographic areas since august 2018 i am surprised that a recall has not been issued and or a remedy through the dealers.
Started truck in a parking lot and started to pull away, went to turn and truck went straight till it indicated to 'service power steering.' once i realized it had lost all power steering i was able to limp it home with much effort to make turns. traffic was light so was able to use multiple lanes to make turns. while driving home however, about 65 mph the power steering came back on pulled the truck hard to the right and centered back up, then quit again after three miles.
Vehicle steering sticks during left turns at highway speeds. after vehicle has been driven for approx 1 hour, during left turns at highway speeds, 65+ mph, the steering will hold at approximately the 10 o'clock position resulting in unpredictable and unsafe driving conditions. due to the requirement of highway speeds and approx 1 hr drive time, dealerships won't take the effort to be able to replicate this safety issue. without replication both the dealership and ram customer service consider it a non issue. this issue is not related to the ground recall already issued for the 2019 rams. this safety issue is also reported by numerous other 2019 ram owners in online forums. efforts to get this issue resolved through the dealership and ram customer support have been unsatisfactory. this is not a minor problem and could result in serious damage or loss of life on the road. just because a problem cannot be replicated in a short test drive does not equate to their not being a major safety concern on these vehicles.*dt consumer had the recall performed and the steering problem is still present. when the steering wheel sticks you have to apply some extra force to get it to return to center as well as sometimes it will hold momentarily and jerk back on its own. the concern is the unpredictability of it and the potential over/under steer at higher speeds. once the problem presents itself after longer periods of driving it will also then do it occasionally at slower speeds as well. there have not been any chimes or messages that appear on the instrument panel. it has been in to service but they have been unable to replicate. unfortunately this issue has only appeared during longer road trips at interstate speeds with long left turns so it is unlikely a dealer would be able to replicate it on a short test drive. i know from the forums that people with similar issues have had it resolved with the replacement of the steering rack. *jb
While driving home on the highway approximately 20 mile commute when making left turns the power steering stops working at a specific area of the turns. does not happen while making right turns. the longer you drive the more frequent the problem shows up. when you first start the trip does not show up right away ten after 18-20 miles will start to show the problem at lower speeds between 35-40 mph. due to what i consider an unsafe condition in the steering i put the vehicle into the dealership before an accident or worse occurs. the service manger took the vehicle out for a test drive for 20 miles and did experience the issue with steering. the dealership has not found anything after 3 days and is in contact with chrysler.
Today at 8:45 am my vehicle lost its steering while backing in a parking lot. then again while entering state route 12 in clayton, ny. the steering returned after restarting the vehicle. then while driving in traffic the steering again failed. i stopped and pulled very hard and the vehicle slowly turned onto the next road on my right. i drove for several miles with the steering returning occasionally. dodge ram dealer was about 5 minutes away and slowly arrived at dealer. they are checking it now. the vehicle is a 2019 with slightly over 9000 miles. this event was extremely very close to serious accident.
Reported this yesterday and unable to update in the system. brought vehicle to dealer after the 2 failures... unable to replicate dealer process a recall and an update. not certain if this steering issue is resolved. filed under complaint number 11162423 dated 12/19/18 *dsy
I was driving down interstate i95, when i got an alarm on my dashboard saying my power steering was unavailable, and i had no power steering, i took my truck to the dealer and they checked for loose wires and changed the pcm module and the battery sensor, my truck has been there 3 times as this last from anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 minutes, and has been doing this 6-10 times a day
Tl* the contact owns a 2019 ram 1500. while driving various speeds, the power steering inadvertently lost power for a few seconds and the power steering failure warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 7,000.
Truck make clunking noise throughout the chassis while turning.
When driving speeds are in excess of 70 mph steering wheel does not return to center when steering on the freeway.
While driving in dallas over the weekend, the trucks power steering became unavailable. happening at slow speeds through a residential area. the truck was stopped, turned off then started again and it came back. for a 6 mile drive, this is how the truck acted. once it was left parked for 3 hours, it started and ran fine. the following morning while driving down the interstate at 75 miles per hour, the power steering became unavailable yet again. this lasted for over 19 miles, but finally came back.
