Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2006 Nissan Xterra

Check engine light came on and my fuel gauge reads zero fuel with a full take. *tr

Gas tank was reading 1/4 tank so i filled it and the tank still showed 1/4 tank and within an hour the service engine soon light came on...went to advance auto, received the same code as everyone else who has a complaint about this issue (0463) and was told that it's a fuel sending unit problem. the next day my tank finally registered as being full but the service engine light remained on. had the code reset and now i am cautious about letting the fuel get too low in my vehicle. nissan should be responsible for this not the customer. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. the contact stated when filling the vehicle with gasoline, the fuel indicator would display empty fuel levels. the dealer advised there were no recalls on the vehicle and any repairs would be at her expense. the contact believed nhtsa recall campaign id number 10v075000 (fuel system, gasoline: storage: auxiliary tank) was directly related to the failure however, her vin was not included in the recall. there were no repairs made to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 77,000 and the current mileage was 89,000.

After filling up my 2006 nissan xterra, the low fuel light came on and the needle on empty. discount auto parts told me that the check engine light says that the fuel sensor is not working properly. after researching, apparently this is a common problem with nissan xterras and was once recalled in 2004 for all 2000-2004 models, but nissan isn't recalling them anymore. i feel this is obviously a manufacturers error and needs to be repaired! *tr

We own a 2006 nissan xterra with approximately 55k miles. along with thousands of others, we are experiencing the same problem of a faulty fuel level sensor. our model has 2 fuel gauges--1 electronic that estimates the number of miles remaining ("dte") and 1 standard fuel gauge (f----e). after filling the tank, both gauges had intermittent issues. a few fills later, both gauges indicate an empty tank. everyone seems to experience this problem shortly after the 30,000 mile warranty has expired, forcing the consumer to spend ~$500 to fix the issue. since it is clearly a faulty part, nissan needs to recall this part or fix it for free when this specific issue is identified. my pregnant wife drives our xterra daily and i do not feel safe allowing her to drive a car with absolutely no fuel gauge. however, i refuse to pay $500 for a part that was faulty from the start, as demonstrated by the thousands of posts we have found indicating error po463. thank you for your attention to this widespread and potentially damaging issue. *tr

The fuel level sensor in my 2006 nissan xterra has failed and my fuel gauge is inoperable. after some research, i have discovered that there are literally 1000's of people with the same problem. nissan is ignoring this problem and it is a major safety issue. http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/xterra/4151-fuel-gauge-problem-service-engine-soon-light.html. *tr

Fuel sending unit failure. *tr

Fuel level sensor started moving around erratically roughly 8 months ago on a 2006 nissan xterra. now the gauge almost always reads empty which in turn keeps my low fuel light on. this problem has also triggered the service engine light. therefore, i do not know how much fuel is in my vehicle unless i track mileage and this is not completely accurate. also i would not know if anything else might be wrong with my vehicle since my service engine light is always on. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. the contact stated that when the fuel tank was full, the fuel level indicator would read the tank as empty. the dealer advised replacing the fuel tank and the contact was able to locate a recall that described the exact same failure he was experiencing. the dealer advised that the contacts vin was not included in the recall and any repairs would be at the contacts expense (nhtsa campaign id number 10v075000: fuel system, gasoline: storage: auxiliary tank). the manufacturer was contacted but would provide no assistance. the failure and current mileages were 81,000.

Today, i had about 1/4 tank of gas and filled up before taking a short road trip. when i turned the car back on, the gas gauge read empty and the low fuel light was on. i pulled over, checked to make sure the gas cap was on properly and started the car back up. the gauge still read empty, the low fuel light was still on, and a few miles down the road, the service engine soon light came on. i have found out that this is caused by a defective fuel system sensor that is a know defect. *tr

I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. i went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. after returning home and doing research, i went online to x.nissanhelp.com after performing a search, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that somthing in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600 ivoq n n n n 65 v n n

Fuel sensor continually reads tank empty when tank is full. service engine light comes on when engine gets to 1/4 tank. told that this is a problem with most 2006 models and not covered by warranty. *tr

Around 48,000 miles, my check engine light would come on and stay on for a few days. then around 49,000 miles my gas hand would drop even if i had half a tank of gas in it. now my check engine light stays on and won't go off. i've seen on the internet where others are having the same problem and wanted to document my problem as well. *tr

2006 nissan xterra fuel level sending unit failure. *tr

I own a 2006 nissan xterra and the fuel gauge is it not working most of time, my gas light is on and it is triggering my service engine soon light even when i fill up the truck all the way up the light still stays on and every once and a while it will show my correct fuel amount but it is very rare. i have searched around and it seems like a lot of nissan models have this problem and if you take it to the dealership it is a 600.00 + dollar repair which i do not feel i should have to pay due to nissans error. *tr

Fuel sending unit is malfunctioning causing check engine light to go on. apparently a very common occurrence on nissan xterras. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. the contact stated the vehicle stalled twice as a result of the fuel level gauge reading inaccurate gasoline fuel levels. the contact inquired with the manufacturer in regards to nhtsa campaign id number: 10v075000 (fuel system, gasoline: storage: auxillary tank) but was told his vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 45,000 and the current mileage was 60,000.

Faulty fuel sensor in nissan xterra 2006. appears to be a frequent failure with nissan vehicles after 36 months (due to corrosion in the unit). unit can read faulty causing vehicle to stop. nissan acknowledges defect but will not recall and replace these units. *tr

2006 nissan xterra fuel gauge giving a false reading fuel level sending unit was replaced. *tr

Filled my 2006 nissan xterra full with gas and gas gauge did not register any fuel being put into tank. after 3 miles of driving the service engine soon light came on. after 40 miles of driving fuel gauge went to full but the light is still on. i have noticed that once i get below half a tank of fuel the needle on the gauge doesn't move until i have about 1/8th of the tank left. this has been going on since 45,000 miles and currently has 60,000 miles but this last fill-up was the first to have the service engine soon light. *tr

The fuel level sensor on late model nissan trucks and sport utility vehicles fails and reads an empty level after fill-up. the manufacturer knows of this recurring problem and has issued a technical bulletin ntb07-069a to inform its technicians of the procedure needed to correct the problem. this failure occurs without warning, and remains constant until corrected by the manufacturer. the technical bulletin describes the repair procedure needed to only replace the sending unit, and not the entire fuel pump. failure to correct the problem could potentially lead to vehicles stalled on congested highways due to improper fuel level readouts. *tr

I own a 2006 nissan xterra. at the beginning of this year, 2009, the fuel gauge would time-to-time stop working. when the fuel level reaches below 1/2 a tank, the gauge would automatically drop to empty. when this happens and the vehicle is fueled to a full level, the gauge would still not operate. it takes a few miles of driving before the fuel gauge will slowly begin to reach to the top. this would occur every time the fuel would reach below 1/2 tank. after this happens, its a guessing game on trying to figure out how much is in my tank. i have been stranded on the side of the road three times now. i was told by a nissan dealership in another town, there was a recall for that part. when contacting a dealership near me, they disagreed and gave me a price to fix the problem. *tr

Service engine soon light came on one day. next time i filled my tank up with gas the fuel gauge didn't register and stayed on empty. since then it has fluctuated from 1/4 tank to empty and does not correctly gauge the amount of gas in the tank. ses light remains on. *tr

2006 xterra fuel gauge showed empty even after filling up. i now have service engine soon light that won't go off. the gas gauge does not work. *tr

2006 nissan x-terra. the fuel gauge does not work. as a result of the defective fuel gauge, the check engine light is lit. the vehicle can run out of gas in a driving situation. nissan has only recalled certain 2006 x-terra's when the problem effects all 2006 nissan x-terra's. *tr

Gas gauge acting irregular. shows empty even after filling up the tank. service engine light on. took the vehicle to nissan and the repair is about $450.00 for the fuel gauge sensor. for a car with about 50,000 miles, it's an unexpected and unnecessary cost. judging by the number of complaints, this item should warrant a recall. *tr

Apparently this is a bigger problem than i thought...there def. needs to be a recall!! today i went to the gas station to fill up, i was at about a 1/4 of a tank. after filling, got in the vehicle, turned it on, and saw that it was still saying i had a quarter of a tank. anyways, i ignored it until a couple miles down the road the "service engine soon" light came on. *tr

Noticed it the first time last night. i had just under a 1/4 tank of gas in my 2006 nissan xterra, and drove 15 miles and pulled over to use the phone. left the engine running, and suddenly noticed the "service engine soon" light was lit, and the gas gauge read empty. impossible, and illogical. turned off the engine, turned back on...same thing. drove to gas station, filled up, made sure clicked the gas cap three times for proper seal. gauge read that the gas tank was full, but the "service engine soon" light was still lit. *tr

When fill up gas gauge reads empty. check engine light comes on. i bought part will install myself. *tr

2006 nissan xterra off road. filled up with gas and the service engine light came on, as well as the gas gauge will no longer read correctly. this seems to be an ongoing issue with the xterra and needs to be made the subject of a recall. *tr

I own a 2006 nissan x-terra and currently there is a recall defined for a specific set of vins for a fuel gauge reading malfunction, combined with an illuminated ses light. my vehicle which for some reason is not part of the recall has had this exact failure for over 1 year, as have many other nissan owners. the problem creates a significant safety concern when you are unable to receive an accurate reading on the fuel level. and now it will not pass a state emissions test, because of the ses light. i have tried to deal with nissan and every time i discuss the issue with them they explain that it is not part of the recall. i am going forth with a complaint through nissan and a complaint through the nhtsa to help protect others. *tr

Name: [xxx]. vehicle: nissan xterra, 2006, vin [xxx]. fuel tank level gauge was showing erratic reading and was replaced by the dealer with total charges of $377.93 (including labor charges). i am not sure that this gauge is replaced by the modified float arm. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I have experienced this failure on my current 2006 xterra im at 39000 miles and they refuse to repair it. warranty on this item is 36000 miles. they even tried to bs me when i said there is even a service bulletin out for this common repair. this is how it went: me - is there a current recall or service bulletin for a fuel sending unit failure or dtc p0461/2/3 dealer - let me check sir. me - thanks dealer - no sir me - i find that hard to believe because i have it in my hand it is nissan service bulletin ntb07-069b dealer - i do not have that information on me - service bulletins are created for common repairs so i know im not that only one with this problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. the contact noticed the fuel gauge read full when the fuel tank was empty. the dealer replaced the fuel sender and tank seal april 2009. the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in recall (fuel system, gasoline: storage: auxillary). the contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint. the failure mileage was 88,833. the current mileage was approximately 105,000. updated 11/19/10. *lj updated 11/16/10

I have a 2006 xterra and at approximately 34,000 miles the fuel gauge started acting wacky. marked empty though i just filled up and it would sluggishly go to full after a while. a few days after this the check engine soon light came on and won't go off. fuel gauge is still acting wacky. it figures this started happening after the warranty is up. *tr

I have a 2006 nissan xterra and the fuel gauge started to malfunction at about 45k miles. i also have been having a problem with the vehicle starting. the warranty is up so i decided to do some research and see if there are others having the same problem. after reading over a hundred other complains on the internet for the same problem around 40-60k miles, i decided to send this complaint. something should be done for the loyal nissan customers that spend the money and then have a problem that is obviously a defect. with parts and labor this will run any where from $500-800. this is wrong and nissan should have a recall (if there was a safety issue like airbags or set belts they would have had a recall). a faulty part deserves a recall also. *tr

Po463 error codes, causing faulty gas gauge readings that could allow you to run out of gas without warning. *tr

Fuel gauge does not read fuel level anymore. spoke to dealer, was told it was the fuel tank sending unit (or sensor unit) that had gone bad. apparently there was been a lot of this happening in xterra's. *tr

2006 nissan xterra off road, gas gauge stopped working just over 30,000 (warranty ran out), would fill gas tank and gauge would not reflect filling. sometime needle would move to full for a while, then drop to empty without notice. no way to keep track of mileage. have run out of gas 4 times. *tr

Fuel gauge sensor reads "------" and flashes "dte" (distance to empty). also check engine light turns on and dashboard fuel gauge stays on empty. *tr

Gas tank is lose causing a squeaking noise while going over any bumps in the road. dealer states faulty fuel system and states if not replaced it will shut off at any given moment which could cause a serious accident. many other users have reported same problem for 2006 nissan xterra's with a faulty fuel system. nissan refuses to fix without slapping a $600 price tag on the repair. *tr

About 5 minutes and approximately 3 miles after refueling my 2006 nissan x-terra, the fuel gauge dropped to empty and the "low fuel light" came on. after leaving it parked for 20 minutes, i returned to the truck and when i started it the service engine soon light came on and the fuel gauge was still at empty. when i hooked the truck up to a diagnostic computer it said the fuel sending unit was bad. i looked this problem up on the web to see if any other x terra owners have had this problem. i found loads of websites with owners accounts of their problems with the fuel sending unit on xterras frontiers and pathfinders. my truck has 62000 miles and this problem is not covered under any type of warranty. the nissan dealer wants $99.00 just to look at it. if this fuel sending unit fails while i am driving isn't it a major safety problem? *tr

At 49,000 miles my fuel gauge dropped to empty and my service engine light went on. it has been erratic ever since, mostly reading empty. i had a friend check out the engine light code and it said it was po462, po463 which is the fuel sending unit. i went on the internet and found a service bulletin out on this problem. the issue has never gone away and continues today. i never know how much fuel i have in my tank except i keep track on the odometer how far i have traveled. i have run out of gas a few times on the road not knowing i was about to run out of gas. i also discovered many other people have the same issue. nissan wants over $700 to fix it. i thought the part was covered under the fuel california emission control warranty and was told no. i went back to a nissan dealer as i have in the past to see if a recall has been issued and found out recently there was. but when the dealer checked my vin number they said my xterra was just out side the range of vins that were covered. the service bulletin says all-2005-2008 xterras applied vins. i have an 2006. why is mine excluded?? also i am not able to get my car smoged in my state with the engine light on. currently the car has not been fixed. *tr

I have a 2006 nissan xterra with 49,969 miles on it. after filling up the tank with gas the gas gauge read empty and the warning light remained on. in addition, the service engine soon light illuminated. after two more trips the gas gauge began to read correctly but the ses light remained on. i checked the gas cap was tight and subsequently spoke to a friend with the same vehicle that has had the same problem. i have not yet taken the vehicle to a nissan dealer, because i understand the problem is most likely a fuel sending unit and will cost $300 - $600. my fear is that this problem will happen when my wife is driving and she will either run out of fuel, or think that she has run out of fuel in error. *tr

My 2006 nissan xterra's fuel sending unit has a problem, which results in (a) car does not register full tank of gas after fill-up, (b) occasional (once per 8 fill ups) "service engine" light comes on, which resets itself after several engine starts. this happens immediately after gas tank of filled. service at ferman nissan in tampa has given me response similar to another owner of this make/model (quoted below). since problem with fuel sending unit can result in sudden stop of engine on highway, i think it should be recalled. i experienced my first occurrence of this problem at 39,500 miles, and this is in line with what other owners report. (39k~49k mile range and after 2 yrs). "i had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. i went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. after returning home and doing research, i went online to x.nissanhelp.com after performing a search, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600." *tr

Fuel gauge does not register properly, causing vehicle to run out of gas without notice. now after filling tank, low fuel level light comes on and service engine light is on.

Upon refilling fuel tank, gauge went to zero and service engine soon light came on. *tr

The fuel sending unit has gone out in my 2006 nissan xterra after only 37,000 miles. i have been checking and evidently there are many people with a similar problem. in addition nissan had the same problem in previous years models and they did a recall. i believe we need one done now as this could create a potential safety problem. *tr

In december 2008 after filling the fuel tank the fuel gauge indicated only 1/4 full. approximately 4 hours later the same day after several on and off cycles the mil was illuminated. gauge indication eventually returned to near full as the fuel was used. after dropping below 1/4 tank the gauge now drops to zero and the low fuel light is illuminated. condition still exists in late february 2009. have not have code read but research confirms that symptoms are identical other reports with failure confirmed as defective fuel level sensor. *tr
