2005 nissan titan differential failure happened for no apparent reason just after starting out in the morning leaving the driveway. i am told by the dealer that the differential will have to be replaced. differential was replaced 30,000 - 40,000 miles ago by a different dealer service facility when leaky seals were serviced but not for a differential problem. i am assuming that the differential ring and pinion gears, gaskets and lub will be replaced. *tr

Driving at highway speeds up and down large hills in truck, steering wheel begins shaking violently, slowed down and shaking stopped, heard loud grinding noise then loud bang and even louder grinding. pulled over to side of road and saw the driveshaft had pulled back from rear but was still connected. *tr

I was driving home from work in my 2005 nissan titan (se crew cab 4x4 off-road edition with tow package) and started hearing a loud metal on metal sound from the rear of the truck. i also could feel a large jolt when accelerating and braking. i took the vehicle to the local nissan dealership the next morning and they said i needed a new rear differential, and that i also needed to replace the seal on the front differential. they told me that it would cost $3,500 to replace the rear differential and $400 to fix the front differential. the truck has only 67,000 miles on it, and is out of warranty. i have had all the recommended services on the vehicle, and do not use the vehicle for off-roading, nor do i use the vehicle to tow. nissan said they would only contribute a thousand dollars toward the repair. the dealership ordered the parts today. this is yet another titan to add to the rear differential problems list. *tr
I'm the only owner of my 2005 nissan titan crew cab and i've been happy with the truck for 105,000 miles - until this past weekend when, at highway speed, i began to hear a whining noise. after stopping and verifying that nothing was visibly wrong underneath the truck body (no leaks, etc) i drove on. i stopped a few miles down the road to check again and while pulling into a parking lot heard a loud clunk. i coasted to a stop and found my drive shaft on the ground. carriage nissan in gainesville georgia is quoting a price of several thousand dollars for repairs. i've been diligent about maintenance on this vehicle and there is no good reason why the truck's rear end should completely fail this way. online, i've learned i'm not the only one with this issue. any help out there available for those of us with this problem? *tr
Rear axle seals on nissan titan pickup trucks leaking and require replacement of entire axle shafts. *tr
2005 nissan titan, 52,830 miles, purchase date of 7/23/2005. one week out of the 5-yr warranty, right rear axle seal leaking differential fluid. fluid thrown on wheel and brake rotor from tire rotation. right rear axle seal failed. braking felt off when driving, which led to initial walk-around of the truck and noticed fluid on ground. contact 3 nissan dealerships. would not touch the truck since technically out of warranty (1 week). contacted nissan consumer affairs. nissan not interested in helping. *tr
2005 nissan titan le crew cab 4x4 with a failing rear end differential. at 58k miles, the truck rear end began to slip badly. the vehicle has not been used for anything other than commuting to work. i do not off road or have off road modification that would exceed manufactures specs and performance. just normal driving. nissan indicates that i am 30 days past the expiration of my warranty, but under the mileage requirement. nissan needs to held accountable for quality controls on the manufacturing of these rear end assemblies. typically $2500.00 repair bill....that should be shouldered by nissan. *tr
The rear axle seals are leaking on my 2005 nissan titan. the oil is running from the axle seals on to the rear brake rotors and rear brake pads. this can result in rear brake failure and can cause a crash. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan titan. the contact was driving 15 mph when the vehicle exhibited an unusual bang from underneath. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the entire drive shaft fractured from the vehicle and the rear differential had locked. the dealer repaired and replaced the drive shaft, rear differential and the rear seal transfer case. the dealer stated that the front differential pinion flange fractured, causing the failure. the failure mileage was 89,951 and the current mileage was 93,253. updated 01/20/11 *bf updated0 3/24/11
Brought nissan titan to mechanic to have brakes checked. upon replacement of brakes found that the rear seal had failed and grease had covered the right wheel well and tire rim. seals and bearing had to be replaced. *tr
The rear end was replaced before i bought the truck and just 3 years later i had to have the left rear axle seal replaced and now im having to replace the right side axle seal. im not too sure that its not damaged the rear end itself. i had a case number with nissan north america but because of the time its been out of warranty they wont replace anything. there are too many people who are having the same problem with theirs for there not to be something done about it. these seals should not be going out that quick. *tr
Right rear axle seal leaking. replaced once at 22,000 miles and it is leaking again at 75,000 miles. 2005 nissan titan le. *tr
Heard my brakes squeaking and started to investigate. saw oil residue on the inside of the wheel and it was on the brakes as well. the oil was coming from the axle. the seal is bad. no accidents yet, but this could cause an accident if i needed to stop in a hurry with oil on my brakes!!! *tr
I own a 2005 nissan titan that has had the rear end diff and axle replaced twice by nissan at 98,000 miles nissan discovered the rear seals leaking, and did nothing about it, i tried to secure a lawyer, the cost was astronomical, at 102,000 miles the valve body in the trans has failed, as a result i contacted nissan north america spoke to gordon middleton, whom on behalf of nna after a sixweek discovery advised me that nna would not be able to assist me, even after promising repairing the rear seal in earlier conversation, later refused to lift a hand, costing me six weeks of car rental cost, and the agonizing pain of waiting on a decision that would never come anyway. please assist me in this matter my 2005 nissan titan le is still not fixed. *tr
Rear axle seal on my 2005 nissan titan leaking dealership said rear axle seal was leaking replaced seal, bearing and spacer in june 2010 that was drivers side rear axle now experiencing noise and differential problems in the front end in february 2011, wheel bearing and hub replaced noise and vibration still present had the vehicle in under warranty for clunking the front end when beginning to drive and was told it was the anti-lock brakes going through the self check. axle seal went bad at 52,000 miles was told by dealer i was lucky i noticed the problem prior to rear differential burning up. problem noticed because check engine light was on and was problem with the control valve on my fuel system. truck was out of warranty between the two it was 780 dollars to repair and now my problems are worse. after normal maintenance vehicle was spilling out fluid from overflow tube. dealership said they overfilled front differential and there would be not problem. first problem at 52000 with rear differential seal now front is going bad.. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan titan. the contact was reversing from a driveway at relatively low speeds when the rear differential failed. the vehicle was not drivable. the dealer advised the entire differential unit would need to be replaced at the contacts expense. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 40,000.
05 nissan titan - clunking sound i thought was a u-joint is my rear end fixing to go. right rear seal leaking differential fluid on my rear brakes safety hazard. if my rear end went out while driving 70mph which i do every day. it could be very dangerous maybe fatal result. i have a 6 and 4 year old that are with me everyday in the truck. well known problem that nissan needs to fix! *tr
There was a noise from the rear of the truck and an odd odor. it almost felt like a transmission slip once in a while driving. i drove it home as the noise was getting worse and had it towed to the dealer. their tech drove it off the lot to "check it out" after i told them about the problem and that it was getting worse. the rear end blew out and sprayed fluid all over the undercarriage, the back of the tailgate, everywhere. the dealer just said it had to be replaced. period. this truck is well maintained by the same dealership and i am told that the rear end/differential is sealed at the factory and is not a part of a maintenance item. it is not used for towing, off roading or anything else like that. i am the only one who drives the truck. i think it would have been very dangerous had it gone out while i was driving it. the dealership had to have it towed back to the shop. it is my understanding that this is a rather common problem based on the complaints that have been filed. it is also an expensive problem at $2300.00 in my estimation. i requested that they keep the part for further evaluation. *tr
Nissan titan 2005 4x4 64,400 miles the rear differential started jerking and popping. took the nissan dealer and they said that the rear differential spider gears failed and the entire rear end would have to be replaced. the cost was $3200.00. this truck is my wife's regular diver and she transports the kids to school in if this had happened at high speed it could have been very dangerous. *tr
Rear axle on my nissan titan is leaking differential fluid all over my brakes for the 3rd time. it is evident that the nissan setup is not doing a good job (bad seals or bad venting causing pressure to destroy the seals. this is a safety issue because the oil seeps onto the brakes once the seals have let go. *tr
Nissan titan rear differential failure. *tr
I had driven from my college to my chiropractors office without any incidents. when leaving my chiropractors office i was backing out of parking stall with wheels turned to the right. all of a sudden there was a loud pop. being a mechanic i thought that i might have ujoint issues. i climbed under and checked my driveline and everything was in good order. i then drove back to my college where i could get my truck onto a lift and check it out. in the 12 miles from the chiropractors office to the college it had progressed to the point of not being able to drive. it would bind when turning left and drag wheels as thought limited slip was out. or when turning to the left it would sound as though someone had taken a 20 pound sledge hammer and hit the tail shaft of the transmission. the rear axle seals and bearings were replaced at 50,000mi under factory warranty. after reviewing many claims on this differential this was an indication as to the rear diff going out. currently i have 67,000mi on it and on the dealer level they are not willing to replace. have a phone interview with a nissan north america district rep tomorrow and hope to have this cleared up. if not the quote to get a new rear end assembly, since you cannot just order the pumpkin, is $3400.00. i see that there is a huge issue with this and hope that nissan will take care of this. my truck is a 2005 nissan titan le crew cab 4x4 with offroad and tow package. no mods have been done to truck with exception of putting on nerf bars. everything else is what nissan sent it out the doors with. thank you *tr
2005 nissan titan 121000 miles. normal driving conditions. noticed oil on the inside of the right rear fender well after driving 50 miles on the interstate. upon further investigation revealed oil dripping from the axle tube onto the inside of the rim. right rear axle seal failed and oil is slinging onto brake caliper, truck is parked and oil is dripping onto the inside of the rim collecting and will sling out onto tire, brake caliper and exhaust tail pipe. left rear axle seal is beginning to leak. repair is new seals, bearings, spacer, retaining clip, bearing retainer. *tr
No events have led to the failure of the rear end of my 2005 titan 4x4. dealer has identified leaking fluid from the rear axel/seals. rearend (axel) failure is immanent and will be substantial. this same issue has been reported by many titan owners and presents a driving danger on the road. i can't afford the $3000 plus to replace the rear axel. vehicle has only 58,000 miles. this failure is due to defective internal parts, bearings, etc. in the rear axel of these titans trucks. *tr
2005 nissan titan rear differential failure purchased used w/ 75,000 whining in rear inspection found spider gears broken. extended warranty replacement. *tr
While rolling from a stop driving a nissan 2005 titan truck with 84,200 miles on it, i heard a noise and subsequent clanging sound. later that day i investigated the sound and determined it was coming from the rear of the vehicle and the problem was probably the rear differential. i took it to a nissan dealer who later determined that the pinion gear loss a tooth/teeth. after further investigation i determined the only way to fix the problem was to install the whole rear end assembly including housing, gears, and axles costing $3100 at the nissan dealer. there is a safety problem with nissan which needs to be investigated. *tr
Rear differential on 2005 nissan titan broke while traveling at highway speeds. in researching online it seems that this is a chronic problem with nissan titans around the 50k -85k mile range. believe this should become a recall issue as this could have severe consequences if the rear end locks up when it brake at speed. *tr
Truck started making clunk noise 5 months ago every one in a while i thought it was stuff in the bed of the truck. last night i was turning a corner is made a the clunk noise and every turn i took under power made the clunk noise and when i start from a stop on wet driving surfaces. *tr
Driving along. stopped at a stop sign to make a right turn. the rear end on my 2005 nissan titan crewcab, made a real loud clunk sound. this only happens when backing up to the right, and turn right. going slow. the truck only has 71212 miles on the odometer. *tr
Rear diff went out on my 2005 nissan titan. it was well maintained and it went out at 87k miles. this is ridiculous that nissan will not step up and pay for the item that is obviously a defect. look at all the complaints. i think it is time for a class action lawsuit. *tr
Rear axle seal failed on 2005 nissan titan, 59,000 mileage. as a result of the failure, leaking rear differential fluid covered emergency brake pads making them ineffective and unsafe. nissan repair advised repair was fully my responsibility. i had rear seal and bearing replaced by local repair shop. *tr
The axle seals on the nissan titan began to leak and many other nissan titan owners have had this same problem. mine began to leak at 36k miles but i have seen others leak as early as 18k miles. this is a common problem that needs to be addressed properly and fixed. the differential fluid that leaks out, leaks onto the brakes and can cause them to fail. i noticed my axle seal was leaking after my brakes started to squeak, grind, and jolt the truck back and forth while braking. this has been a problem with my 2005 nissan titan and the problem continues to occur in newer models. i love the truck but this problem needs to be fixed properly. right now i am in the process of replacing the seal through my nissan dealership but the problem is still prone to happen. *tr
Bought a used 2005 nissan 4x4 titan, front differential failed. i noticed front differential was leaking in the driveway the next day. noticed the drivers side cv shaft was pulling out of the differential and not properly seated. automotive shop found c clip on the end of the splined axle shaft broken and the splines stripped and twisted where it goes into the gear. replaced the drivers side cv shaft, axle shaft, gear, & bearings. vehicle had 44500 miles on it. *tr
2005 nissan titan 4x4 crew cab and all of a sudden has a broken rear differential. the cost to repair is $3,500 an not covered under warranty. how is this possible? i've towed a watercraft trailer about 5 times and nothing else. *tr
While driving on the freeway, i had a sudden loss of acceleration, a loud thump under the vehicle and then thumping when i tried to accelerate again. after taking my titan to a mechanic, he told me the rear differential was destroyed and needed to be replaced. *tr
Right and left rear axle seals blew out and leaked differential fluid. differential fluid leaking on rear brake rotors which could cause brake failure, which was a major safety concern to me. bought used on 3/22/2010 with 61,611 miles on vehicle. no suspension modifications had been done to vehicle. also, the rear differential oil will slowly leak and cause the rear differential to lose fluid and fail. as this seemed to be a very common problem with the nissan titan, nissan should address this issue and offer a permanent fix so we would not be faced with the safety issue in the future. *tr
2005 titan 4x4 truck. i had a new set of tires put on my truck. the tire shop noticed fluid leaking onto the back plate of the brake on the right rear of my truck. i took it to my mechanic and he said it was gear lube leaking out of the axle seal and contaminated the e-brake and pads for that wheel. he also had to change the bearing because it was pressed on between the seal. *tr
Loud roar from rear of truck. once it started it got worse over a short period of time. carried to dealer and was told rear end gear failure. dealer replaced rear end. i called nissan because only 10,000 out of warranty but turned down. if rear end had went out at speed this could be very dangerous...nissan needs to repair these trucks! *tr
Rear differential/axle seal leak. *tr
I was driving my 2005 nissan titan. i made a turn onto an on ramp going about 15 miles an hour when it felt like i was hit from behind by another vehicle. i looked and no one was there. my truck started making a really bad popping noise so i had it towed to meineke where they informed me that the rear differential was out. so i then had it towed to a nissan dealership where they gave me the same diagnosis and denied my claim for them to fix it. price tag for the repair is 3300 not including taxes. *tr
2005 nissan titan le 4x4 front driver side axle shaft pulled out of the front differential and leaked fluid. this is going to cost me a ton!!!!!!!!!!!!! nissan should cover this. i have read a lot forums and many, many people have had this problem. why is nissan not making this right? *tr
My rear diff has been making noises for the past 4000 miles. took it into the shop two times and they couldn't find it. now the rear is shot and im over my warranty now by 1000 miles,so they wont do nothing about it. *tr
Front driver side axel is falling out of the front differential.. *tr
I stopped at a stop sign and when i pulled away at approximately 30 mph i thought i was rearended by another vehicle. i pulled into a gas station and the rearend was popping and grinding. i got out of the vehicle to inspect and did not see any fluid or signs of damage to the driveline. i tried to back up and pull forward and the rear wheels were locked up. the vehicle stopped so violently when it happened if i had been going any faster i am sure there would have been an accident or i would have been injured. vehicle was towed to dealer for repairs. dealer said repair will be to replace the complete rearend at a cost of $3500.00 for a used unit. *cn
Nissan titan front & rear differential failure - i purchased the nissan titan - off road/big tow package in july 2005 and primarily used the vehicle on the road. experienced a slight clicking noise in the front end and brought it to my dealer. the dealer informed me that the front differential was damaged and the right front axle was not attached to the differential. while at the dealer i asked them to check the clunking noise from the rear end. first they stated nothing was wrong and then 24 later after considerate prompting the dealer informed me that the rear end need to be replaced. nissan usa paid for the front differential (parts only) and has rejected my request to replace the rear differential. based on the number of complaints on this site and other sites nissan needs to step up to this issue. *tr
Passenger side rear seal leaking oil from axle onto brakes. repaired under warranty by dealer. *cn
