Brakes on 2004 nissan titan chatter and make steering wheel shake when applied!*ak
Post that i submitted to nissan: my nissan 2004 titan crew cab had a very scary brake problem today. i lost most or all of the braking capability in the truck. it had a clunking noise when trying to apply brakes. the brake light was on. i stopped the car. ck'ed fluids (all ok) and restarted. problem went away after restart. pretty certain the dealer will not find a problem, they rarely do until it is completely broken. i have 51k miles and several brake problems. first: is this covered by my 60k mile power train wrnty and is there a fix? i have left it at the dealer today but i need to know where the manufacturer stands (in writing or a reply to this email). second, since this is such a severe safety issue we will assume that no reply to this email within 24hrs means the car is ok from the manufacturer point of view and no issues known to the manufacturer exists that deal with brakes or brake failure. the d&t of this submission is 3:30 pm feb 25th 2007. cc of this submission has bee sent to the cpsc and the nhtsa. tks for your prompt attention. joe. *nm
Had to jam on brakes for a stop and pedal hit the floor even as truck stopped. i then released to move up a few feet and couldn't stop since i had no brake pedal pressure. took 2-3 more full release and pumps to get back pressure. recurring problem. dealer said they could not duplicate the problem and saw no reason for it. *jb
I bought a nissan titan crew cab, new, in 2004. in june of 2006 the brakes had a complete failure and went all the way to the floor without stopping the truck. this happened several time on my way to the dealership. the nissan dealership stated the problem was that the software needed upgrading. the saleman also noted that they have had problems with the breaks in the nissan titans and armadas. they upgraded the software. the process was called " misc reprogram vdc with update" which i had to pay for. they fixed the issue for that occurence. the breaks worked until yesterday, dec 13, 2006 when the breaks did the same thing, causing me to run off the road to avoid rear ending into another car. i did not read in the owners manual anywhere , where it stated i must bring the truck in for a computer software upgrade to make the brakes work appropriately. the truck is at the nissan dealership now to figure out the problem. *nm

My entire rear axle had to be replaced at 31,500 miles on my nissan titan. it started howling and smoking when driving to moab. the dealer replaced the entire rear axle. thankfully i was not at highway speeds when the rear end failed. in addition, the vehicle has had 4 sets of brakes/rotors/calipers on the vehicle and is starting to exhibit signs of needing the fix again. *jb

while pulling out of a parking lot truck brake lights came on suddenly then brake pedal went to the floor when pressed. brakes had a grabbing effect not a smooth stop. after truck was parked and ignition turned off brakes were normal when restarted truck. its a good thing there wasn't any traffic and road was not level with minimal traffic at that time. *nm

Brakes go to floor, have little braking and brake light illuminates during decent down hills. that is a bad time to lose the brakes. *nm

Brake and rear end failure. *nm
I recently purchased a used 2004 nissan titan with 15,000 miles. soon after purchase the vehicle began to shake when braking. now it has progressed to a violent shaking of the entire vehicle when braking, making it unsafe to drive. i am planning to replace the rotors, but from what i have read this is only a temporary fix. nissan should recall and replace the braking system because lives depend on an effective braking system. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at various speeds, the brake pedal went down to the floorboard. the vehicle was seen by the dealer. the rotors were turned, however the problem persisted. the dealer replaced the rotors and extended the warranty on the brakes. additionally, the traction, abs, and differential lock light illuminated without incident. the dealer could not determine the cause of the illumination.
Since purchasing my truck in august of 2004 i have experienced several brake related issues. i've taken the truck to the same dealer for service on each failure/issue. the break issues experienced have been brake lights turning on, brakes shuddering, the truck not braking properly, brakes not working until the pedal was almost completely pressed. recently the truck failed to stop resulting in a rear end collision. the dealer has replaced/resurfaced rotors, brake pads and replaced sensors during the past year and a half. however, i continue to experience issue after issue regarding the brakes. i have had other defects as well, but the brake issues have been the primary issue. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 60 mph attempting to apply brake pressure the brakes failed resulting in a crash. the vehicle sustained left frontal damage and it was towed to an independent repair shop. the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the accident and is repairing the left front of the vehicle. although the problem with the brakes still exists, no other inspections have been made. a police report was filed at the scene.
While driving my 2004 nissain titan crew cab pickup , i notice that my dash brake light comes on and stays on. i apply the brakes and the pedal goes to the floor. i then pull over and turn the truck off and then back on and noticed the light off and a strong brake pedal again. i now notice that this problem is happening atleast 2 to 3 times a day. i have to turn off the truck and restart so i can have brakes again. i have not taken my truck to the shop nor replace any parts regarding this matter. *tr
2004 nissan titan crew cab pickup. i am residing in residential construction new subdivision which occasionally has mud on the streets. when the titan goes through even a small amount of mud it loses brakes. i went through a stop sign and stopped, going down the opposite side shoulder. luckily, no other vehicles were involved. but, after rolling again and pumping the brakes, they returned. went through the muddy street again to test. same result appeared, no brakes or very limited brakes. in addition, an awful noise was made when applying the brakes after going through the mud of a paved road. this is a potential accident/injury/death awaiting to happen. *ak
Problem with nissan titan 2004-traveling on 01/08/06 in nissan pickup truck w/approx. 28,000 miles on it, attempted to brake, vehicle began swaying violently out of control, brake pedal went to the floor and spun vehicle 180 degrees facing north on the shoulder of the southbound lane of nys thruway. towing jayco 23' travel trailer; the trailer jack-knifed and hit vehicle. nys police called a tow truck because vehicle's brake pedal went to the floor and vehicle was not driveable. in the fall nissan sent a letter to truck owners regarding a "brake judder" condition extending the warranty period.upon receipt of letter, requested that our local dealer address the issue; were informed until we experienced the "judder" problem, repairs could not commence. since that time, tires have been rotated, oil changed, and nys inspection in december. contacted nissan corp headquarters and were informed factory rep would inspect vehicle on 02/02/06 - approx 25-days after incident. local dealership cannot inspect vehicle. no assistance by nissan until inspection by factory representative determining fault, even though the braking system completely failed! after further investigation of this problem on several auto forum sites, it is evident that nissan titan's have a serious brake problem! there is no recall . we fear that someone will get maimed or killed! *nm
I have a 2004 nissan titan le extend cab with off road package and towing package. i have had to have the brakes looked at about every 20k miles. i currently have 67k on it, and i had it in the shop for 3 day while waiting on nissan corp to decide if they would still cover the brake defect. the dealer told us they could only turn the rotors and replace the pads, which they did 2x's. now it needs new rotors and pads, and suddenly the recall is no longer in effect, so i will have to pay over $500 to get this done. i refuse, and i am still waiting on nissan corp to call me. i will never buy another nissan again, their customer service is horrible. *tr
Nissan titan 2004 brake pedal goes to the floor with a loud noise like air escaping a balloon. *ts *jb
I have a 2004 nissan titan, which i bought from east carolina nissan. i have returned the vehicle three times for repairs to the brake system. they have replaced parts each time. the brakes still do not stop the vehicle. i wrote the manager and he said he would not refund my money or replace the vehicle under the federal lemon law. *nm
2004 titan se with big tow package. asd of 26000 miles have had brakes replaced four times, the last time by a nissan engineer. also a replaced brake booster. have already had the recall brakes, those were put on the second time, at 21000 and were problems shortly after, so the recalled brake parts do not work!!! nissan corporation told us that they felt no responsibility or obligation to replace our vehicle. i feel a class action law suit coming up. and by the way, truck struggles towing 6500lbs, even though it is suppose to tow 9500. *jb
Dt: a 2004 nissan titan. while the consumer was driving the brakes failed. this has happened at least three times. when pressing on the brakes they will not hold. this did not happen every time. the brakes, and anti-lock brake light came on. when contacted the dealership they told him that rotors needed replacement, and they have been reengineered by nissan. consumer has been waiting at least 2 months for the replacement. the most recent incident occurred on 8-1-05.*ak
Having front rotors replaced for the second time due to warping. first failure occoured around 3000 miles with lots of brake shudder. rotors and associated hardware were replaced and problem resolved. second failure occouring at 7500 miles with brake shudder. rotors replaced again by dealer.
Nissan titan purchased jan 04, it has been back to the dealer 3 times now to fix the front brakes. after about 7-9k miles a severe vibration occurs from the front brakes mainly at highway speeds. this in my opinion presents a serious safety issues as the whole truck vibrates violently. *jb
Dt: contact states she leased a vehicle from lia nissan with 17 miles on it in 9-04. she heard a squeaking noise in the brakes. also , the brakes went all the way to the floor. she took vehicle to a nissan dealership in 1-05. they could not find anything wrong with the brakes. about 2 months later around april or may she noticed the steering wheel shaking when applying the brakes, and she would have to pump the brakes to get them to stop. this happens every time she applied the brakes regardless of the speed she was traveling. she has never had any warning lights to come on. her husband told her that the shaking in the steering wheel was probably because the rotors on the brakes were bad. she called the dealership again , and they said there was a recall on the brakes, but they did not have the parts to fix it and they would mill the brakes down until the parts came in, to help eliminate the shaking. she never received any recall letters. a recall number was not available. in late may her husband took the car in to have the brakes milled down again. they put them on a waiting list for when the parts do come in. today (7-15-05) when she went in, she was #18 on the waiting list; where in may she was #10 on the waiting list. the dealership will not relinquish any kind of receipts or documentation of the vehicle ever being there. *ak
At 6000 miles, the front brakes vibrated and pulled to the right on application. this occurred again at 11,000 miles and again at 15,000 miles. on all occasions the dealer resurfaced the rotors. nissan advises they are aware that the rotors are too small but doesn't consider it a safety issue so they are only repairing the trucks as parts become available.
The front brakes on the 2004 nissan titan truck began failing after 5000 miles. the dealer acknowledges that this is a design flaw, however, the dealer does not have the parts to fix the brakes. during heavy breaking, there is extreme vibration and shudder which could lead to a loss of control
Brake judder ,lack of formal recall , denial of safety issues , lack of repair/replacement parts. *nm
Front brakes causing heavy steering wheel shaking along with feeling of truck frontend bouncing and leaving road contact when brakes are applied have contacted local dealer who stated no mandated recall for this braking problem although they are aware of some other similar complaints about the brakes not working correctly and causing loss of steering ability due the wheel shudder
Purchased a new 2004 nissan titan le truck on 10/23/2004 and it has since had to have new brake pads and rotors 3 times in 7 months with only 19281 miles driven on the truck. the first replacement was at 4662 miles on 12/13/04, the 2nd replacement was at 8416 miles on 1/26/05, 3rd replacment was at 15755 miles on 4/26/05 and 4th replacement is needed now. when the pads and rotors start failing, very harsh steering vibrations occur when the brakes are applied. this has a great potential for causing serious accidents especially in inclimate weather. i have complined to the dealership where i have had it serviced all 3 times so far and i have also contacted nissan's customer service department and have yet to recieve any information that they have a fix for this problem except to continue to replace the pads and rotors every 2000-3000 miles, but what happens when the warranty runs out at 36000 miles. this problem should be addressed and not left to cause a serious accident or death. i know i am not the only person having problems with the brakes because if you google search nissan titan brake problems on the web you will find numerous forums of people discussing the same problems i am having with my brakes. please help with this issue before it is to late and someone is killed.
Nissan has acknowleged that the brakes on nissan titan are inadequate. this causes the rotors to warp under even the lightest use. they told me that the demand for the replacement parts is very high, therefore the remedy is to go the dealership, have the rotors turned twice before they will order parts. i asked to order the parts right away without turning the rotors first and they declined. meantime, i am driving a brand new truck with 6000 miles on it with warped rotors. i do not feel that i am in imminent danger however this is a braking problem which in my opinion is of utmost importance.
Continued warping of factory front brake rotors. rotors were replaced once and resurfaced twice. vehicle only has 10,000 miles. nissan has not corrected the problem yet.
Dt: when applying brake pressure at no particular speed the steering wheel violently shakes. the brakes do work, but the steering wheel is affected. the consumer went to the dealer , who said they could turn down the rotors, but the problem would return. the consumer did not want the rotors turned down, he wants them replaced. the consumer contacted nissan of north america several times, and they will not return calls or discuss the issue. the consumer filed a complaint with nissan. no repairs or corrections have been made at this time. the consumer felt this was a temporary fix. *ak
The front brake rotors began warping at around 10,000 miles on my 2004 nissan titan.was told that dealer would only repair brakes up to 12,000 miles.now that i am replacing them myself!!!! nissan is charging almost 100.00 for the pads......hummmmm!!!
Dt: vibrations in front end due to bad rotors. took to dealer and he said they would have to cut the rotors and replace pads because of overheating problem with the rotors. manufacturer said that they were aware of the problem, waiting to get new rotors so they can replaced. manufacturer will extend warranty for 3 years. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan titan. the dealer replaced the pads and rotors due to a recall on the vehicle. while coming to a stop at 5 mph, the vehicle rattled. the dealer replaced the pads and rotors again, however, the failure continued to occur. the recall number was unknown. the current mileage was 42,000 and failure mileage was 15,000. updated 09/19/07 *tr
Severe shudder in front breaks due to warped front disks. happened at 5-7k miles after each replacement of rotors or turning of rotors.
At 13,000 miles, my truck has been to the nissan dealer 3 times for brake roter problems. the rotors warp and cause violent shaking of the stering wheel when braking. the truck will also pull to the left when braking. this seems extremely dangerous and it is very dissapointing that nissan hasn't fixed this problem.
Brakes and rotors needed turned at 4.000 miles and brake pedal going to the floor..drivers window not always working..antifreeze smell after driving
Like many other titan owners i am having constant problems with the front brakes getting soft and vibrating. nissan keeps saying that they have a solution coming, but they keep pushing the date back. the last two times i've been in with this issue, their interim fix hasn't helped for more than a day. brakes are something that both you and nissan should not be screwing around on. this should have been fixed months ago.
Purchased vehicle in august 2004, truck started to shake slightly when brakes were applied at around 7000 miles. had brakes/rotors replaced at approximately 11000 miles when the shaking made the vehicle unsafe to drive. i am now at 17000 miles and the truck is doing the same thing. starts off as a slight shutter, and progresses to the point where the steering wheel practically shakes out of driver's hands. *ak
