Problems with 2006 Nissan Pathfinder ENGINE

On average, the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 109 631 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2006 Nissan Pathfinder

The vehicle started to lose power and come back on while traveling with 6 passengers on the 101 fwy in north los angeles county. then it's gauge showed it running hot (no smoke or loss of power) and a check engine light was on. then the gauge said it wasn't running hot and no power loss. i continued down the freeway and made it home with no more problems. i studied and research this problem for hours on the web. i brought the car to the dealer service department the next day. my research turned up valid. this 2006 nissan pathfinder se vehicle should have been recalled by the manufacturer. nissan knew about this problem. instead nissan extended a warranty to 100k and passed these flaws on to the consumer. shame on nissan! the problem is what is described as a fluid intermix. this is because the transmission fluid has cooling coils that run through the radiator. for a year or two nissan had produced defective product and was not forced to recall. now me the consumer is stuck with a six to nine thousand dollar repair bill on my vehicle with 110k miles on it. recall these vehicles please nissan. whistle blowers just ask the service people about this particular no nissan did. this is consumer abuse by corporate tough guys. *tr

Radiator failed coolant leaked into transmission. transmission and radiator need to be replaced. nissan is aware of this problem and never informed me of this issue. if i was made aware of the problem i would have had radiator replaced. there should have been a recall. i am sure more similar situations will continue to occur until there is an official recall. who loses? the customer. this is unacceptable. nissan needs to be held responsible. *tr

I have the 06 pathfinder, there was a recall that i was not aware of, until i start searching after the car have accelerating issue that almost cause an accident multiple occasions, anyway i went to my dealership and they said nissan only cover u to 100000 miles. our is 15000 miles over, the problem was a defected radiator and that leak coolant into the transmission. it would cost us $7600 to repair it , and way over our budget . i start check online and there is a lot of complaints on this issues. hope my complaints help us and many others that help same misfortune. *tr

Radiator fluid leaked into the transmission fluid causing the vehicle to have issues accelerating. this resulted in over $700 in car repairs. *tr

Observed milky puddle under radiator and thick milky pink fluid in radiator and overflow reservoir. observed during the last 3000miles intermittent vibrations similar to hitting the "wake-up" strips on the side of a highway shoulder or washer-board road texture. vibrations happened at various times between 1250 to 2250 rpm and 50 to 60mph. tire balance was ruled out as a cause of vibration by mechanic. dealer diagnosis verified cross contamination of the engine coolant and transmission fluid caused by an internal transmission cooler in the radiator split apart. a mechanic described the damage that would be caused to the transmission from the cross contamination would include severe corrosion. transmission failure is imminent because of the severe leakage. transmission failure is also sudden, because the vehicle was operable even with the presence of a leak. repair of this condition requires replacement of the radiator and transmission and flushing the coolant system. i would not want to replace a faulty radiator with the same, but our mechanic verified that the nissan replacement radiator has been be changed from the original part number. therefore, nissan has revised their radiator but not issued a recall. nissan dealer quotes for repair was $9983. *tr

We took our 2006 nissan pathfinder into the local dealer and they told us that we have to change the transmission because the oil is mixing with the fluid in the radiator and transmission. was estimated at $10,000.00 to repair. *tr

Traveling at approximately 40mph. noticed that car shuddered when i accelerated, but then it stopped as i sped up. service engine soon light came on and car lost power while i was driving in high traffic. nearly rearended by the vehicle behind me. cars has to swerve to miss hitting me. the rpms were high when i applied the accelerator, but the car would only go about 10 mph. took car to mechanic nearby. was told there was a problem with the transmission and the car was dangerous to drive. advised to have the car moved to a local transmission business for further inspection. received a class action lawsuit notice against nissan for the very make and model suv i own. at the time, i had no problems. i have maintained the vehicle well. this very costly transmission problem came on suddenly with no warnings, which i read is typical of this nissan defect. i believe that these cars should be recalled and all expenses paid for by nissan as they were aware of the defective radiators. not only are the costs to their consumers unacceptable ($6,000 repair on a vehicle with little over 100,000k miles), but they are putting people's lives at risk with this defect. *tr

This issue is related to nhtsa action number : dp12004 my 2006 nissan pathfinder started having transmission issues at roughly 96,000 miles on 2/1/2013. while driving, the car will sometimes shake and rumble when traveling between 40-55 mph. the car has progressively gotten worse in the 2 weeks that the problem started happening. i took my nissan for repair at berlin city nissan in portland, maine on 2/19/2013 and they stated that the problem is a known issue. the known issue was a design flaw with how the radiator and transmission are integrated together. in summary when there is a cracked atf line in the vehicle, that engine coolant will run through the transmission ultimately causing permanent damage and requiring that the radiator and transmission be replaced. the quote i got today to get the items repaired is $6,700. nissan is aware of this issue and rather than having a recall they increased the warranty duration to 80k miles. from reading on-line, it appears that most people that have had this issue (like me), experience this problem after 80k miles. therefore, nissan does not have to pay for the repair. from reading on-line and talking with the nissan service staff, the problem with my 2006 nissan pathfinder is only going to get worse and ultimately present a driving hazard. i need to make a decision soon whether to make the costly repair or get a new vehicle. i am concerned about the car failing putting myself and my passengers at risk. *tr

I was driving down the highway during rush when all of a sudden my car wouldn't go over 45mph and the rpm went up to 6-7 rpm's as my transmission slipped. i was able to pull my 2006 nissan pathfinder over to the median, but it was too dangerous to exit and check the engine because of the rush hour traffic driving in excess of 65-70mph. i was able to get the truck towed to coggin nissan in jacksonville, fl at my expense. the dealership stated that the transmission cooler line ruptured inside of the radiator allowing coolant and transmission fluid to mix and cross contaminate. they suggested i get a new radiator and transmission. the same dealership sold me the truck and a warranty by fidelity warranty services. the warranty company that is a subsidiary company of the dealership owed by south east toyota (set) denied my claim saying to root of the problem was the radiator. felt like this is a conflict of interest since set owns the warranty company, which would be like asking your boss to pay for something. contacted nissan and haven't heard back. all nissan offered was info on the class action lawsuit which didn't help since this failure in their engineering of the vehicle didn't occur until after 107,710 miles was put on my vehicle. i bought the vehicle with only 93,844 miles on it, and have only had it for a year and a half. i still owe $10,000 and the dealership, warranty company, and nissan have all failed to help fix a known manufacturer defect in the engineering design. i thank god that my pregnant wife was not in the truck with me at the time and we were hit. nissan should take responsibility for their decisions and recall and fix this. all this is doing is causing loyal customers to leave nissan, coggin toyota at the avenues, and fidelity warranty services and expose them and their crooked actions. *tr

Suddenly my pathfinder began to loss power while driving home . i barely made it home.the vehicle suddenly leaked out red transmission fluid in the driveway and began to smoke at the hood of the engine. the pathfinder was towed to a nissan dealer that same day. nissan dealer reports the transmission and radiator needs to be replaced, costing approx 8000.00 dollars. *tr

Under body vibration reported in january with less than 100k miles. told it was due to the crack in my back bumper. then 2 days ago, drove the car back to nissan dealership at 112k miles where they told me my radiator cracked which lead to fluid going into the transmission - a widely known nissan problem. will have to replace transmission $5500 + radiator $700 because they are ruined. fuel sensory gauge stuck also and will have to replace - also a widely known nissan problem. *tr

Was unaware of known problem with the radiator when my wife was driving down a busy road and said that the vehicle just wouldn't go. her speed dropped and she was left on the side of a dark busy road. we got the vehicle to a repair facility and they gave a us a quote and then called a nissan dealership where they said it was a known problem and gave me a quote. both quotes ended up being around the same. i wasn't aware that this was a known issue and am upset that it happened to so many other people and i wasn't made aware of it and that nissan only pushed out the warranty date instead of making a recall. *tr

A couple of months ago my 2006 nissan pathfinder started jerking into gear around 45-55 mph. i had no idea of the transmission/radiator issue at that point. in mid-december when trying to accelerate from a stop at a stop sign, the vehicle revved but barely went forward at all. thank god i wasn't at a busy intersection, this could have caused a major accident!! the service engine light came on and the rpm shot up. i was able to move the vehicle very slowly into a driveway and there it sat for a couple of days until we could bring it home. it has been parked in the driveway for a month and a half b/c i do not have the money to fix it. the transmission fluid is definitely contaminated. a few weeks ago i received a class action settlement claim form regarding this issue, however, my lovely vehicle has 119,081 miles on it...therefore, i am over the mileage and out of luck! nissan has known about this problem for a very long time and had a recall been issued years ago the problem could have been fixed for much less money! i still owe on this vehicle and it is doing me absolutely no good sitting in the driveway. *tr

I am being told that my transmission is going out due to a faulty transmission nissan installed in the 2006 pathfinders. they are telling me this is very common in the pathfinders and after much research i am seeing that i am not alone. *tr

I am a mother of two elementary school children. i drive them to and from school each day. during these trips and other daily errands, my 2006 nissan pathfinder violently shakes at random throughout the drive. this causes me to be fearful of not being able to control the vehicle, especially when i am transporting my children. the steering wheel visibly shakes and the vehicle feels as of we are riding over rough terrain. apparently this is happening with a good majority of nissan vehicles now, and that is very frightening for them to be on the road . i feel a recall is needed to save a life. *tr

The engine starts up but will not shift to second gear. *tr

The transmission is slipping. the vehicle will suddenly lose its ability to move while under power. checked transmission oil. the level is good but the fluid is "milky" in color. the fluid should be a clear, colored liquid. suspect transmission line inside the radiator is fractured allowing coolant to mix with the transmission fluid. *tr

2006 nissan pathfinder 103k miles. we noticed vehicle would shudder upon acceleration at approximately 40 mph and again at 50 mph. also at times the engine would rev up like it couldn't shift to the next gear. if we slowed down to 50 and re-accelerated to 55 mph, the shuddering became a severe vibration. we took it to an independent mechanic since we had recently a bad experience with our local nissan dealer in fixing another problem (timing chain). the mechanic dropped the transmission pan and found the radiator was leaking coolant into the transmission fluid. mechanic stated we were very lucky to have caught this right away as it could have caused a lot of other problems too lengthy to mention here. mechanic replaced radiator and did a tranny flush but i'm not sure our problems are over. now the fuel gauge registers empty after i have just filled up with fuel, the service engine light came on, and now i am totally stressed out driving anywhere, and especially in traffic. *tr

When i purchased my 2006 nissan pathfinder from a dealer in 2012. vehicle was inspected and deemed safe to drive. i noticed my tire pressure sensor stayed on all the time. even after filling to the recommended psi. didn't think much of it. went on to drive the vehicle with no issues until the next year when i would get this shaking and rumble at about 2500 rpm. took it to a local mechanic and he couldn't find anything wrong except for needing new brake pads and engine tune up. had that done but still my car continued to rumble when i would accelerate. it was intermittent on and off until it got so bad that i had to pull over and let my engine cool before it would do it again. recently i took it to a different mechanic and had them look at it. she ran a test on the computer and the car gave codes that linked back to the transfer case. she then had it looked at by her transmission expert and he discovered coolant and fluid inside the transmission. only then was it linked to all other occurrences that fall back on nissan. i read online that there is a class action lawsuit against nissan for failing radiators and transmissions. it was never brought to my attention when purchasing the vehicle even though this was during the height of the dispute. with it being out of date for any coverages under the lawsuit. i'm now left without a vehicle and a hefty $3,600 repair bill that should have never been there to begin with. i hope nissan has a plan to fix this issue without the consumer paying out of pocket. if not i will be pursuing a case against the dealer for selling me a car that is unsafe to drive. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that the air conditioning would only blow semi-cool air. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis who informed the contact that coolant and transmission fluid were mixing together abnormally. the contact was advised that the coolant lines and the radiator would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired for the lines and the radiator. the manufacturer was contacted and advised that because the failure was not uncommon, they would extend her warranty but not for the recent repairs. the failure and current mileages were approximately 82,000. the vin was unavailable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated when accelerating from a stop the vehicle would jump to second gear and shake violently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. after diagnosis they advised him that he needed a new transmission and radiator. the vehicle was repaired for the transmission and radiator. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 135,000. the current mileage was approximately 136,000. the vin was unavailable.

Major issues with my 2006 nissan pathfinder. intermix with coolant and transmission fluid. the nissan dealership knew after a few moments from lifting my hood. the mechanic explained it would cost over $1500 to replace the radiator and flush the transmission and advised me to come back after 10k miles. after having the radiator ($800) replaced i was on the highway for less than a mile and my rpms were revving high when i accelerated and the truck was obviously stuck in gear. took pathfinder back (two days) to mechanic and found the radiator contaminated once again and needing a new transmission which will cost $2500 that i don't have and i can't afford a new vehicle. i'm making payments on a car i can't drive. my husband is driving a 2005 altima which is having similar problems and just haven't broken down complete. nissan should recognized this issue and address asap. *tr

Car stalled at red light, smoking from hood took to mechanics advised of transmission failure, leaking brown stuff. *tr

Drove to wawa for gas and as car was idiling it over heated and check engine light came on. got my car home and started poking around online just to find thousands of other people are experiencing the same issue. the radiator cracked and mixed with transmission fluid. don't know if transmission is destroyed yet but time will tell. horrible that there is no recall for this. and what a hazard i had my 3 children in car and had to tell them no baseball for them. and top it off there was no signs of any issues and car only has 59,799 miles on it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while shifting gears, the vehicle vibrated and emitted a strong coolant odor. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was found that the radiator cracked due to defective material and caused coolant to enter the transmission. the radiator and transmission was replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 91,000 and the current mileage was 97,000.

Vehicle shakes and transmission slipped when driving. dangerous in traffic. took to amoco and told the transmission fluid is mixing with the radiator and both failed. cost over $4,000 dollars to fix or it is utterly useless - just over 82k miles. investigation shows dangerous trend for safety and complete product defect, with years of foreknowledge by nissan. driving is dangerous since the vehicle doesn't accelerate consistently and steering violently shakes. *tr

Just purchased 2006 pathfinder from local (jeep/dodge) dealer. was literally driving it home from the lot when i encountered vibration and near loss of control at freeway speeds. i was able to get the vehicle home and after checking the fluids found a milky white (atf?) fluid in the coolant/radiator. the vehicle has 87500 miles and i'm beside myself right now. the dealer i purchased the vehicle from seems willing to work with me to remedy the situation but i'm not sure if they'll pay for a new transmission and radiator...? after a couple of minutes of investigation on the internet found the mass of folks dealing with the same radiator/transmission failure problem. i've got an appointment with the local nissan dealer this week... we'll see what happens. nhtsa please help the hundreds if not thousands of nissan owners dealing with this obvious defect! *tr

As has been reported by many our 2006 pathfinder has been found to have antifreeze in the transmission and we are now told it will take 4500 dollars to fix. this is no doubt a manufactures defect as there was no way to prevent this from happening or knowing for sure when it did. this suv has been maintained by professionals and they did not catch it, i believe nissan knew about this based on actions they have taken and now should have to repair these vehicles. *tr

Vehicle was running normal till we park to have lunch.start vehicle fine place shifter in gear (drive) was not taking any gear.we have vehicle taking to nissan dealer.they determine cause due to a faulty radiator leaking coolant to transmission nissan was not going to do any warranty repairs on the vehicle because vehicle was out warranty. *tr

Radiator/ transmission failed causing breakdown radiator was affected as well as when the interior components of the radiators (internal transmission coolers) broke down allowing coolant to mix with the transmission fluid. as a result of the contamination, the transmission and other drive train components were damaged and required replacement. *tr

Vehicle would hesitate badly while driving and almost caused an accident. when taken to a mechanic to fix issue, we found that the transmission fluid had turned pink. the technician stated that at fluid and coolant had mixed together. we had to have the transmission and the radiator replaced.

Transmission went out while driving in traffic. started lurching and lost speed. almost got hit. had the transmission rebuilt plus the torque converter rebuilt. 10/15/2012 transmission started slipping again and losing power. at mileage 169,886 mechanic told me coolant was leaking into the tranmission. repaired again and brought home on 10/18/2012. that evening taking my son to football practice, lost power going 50 mph and almost got rear ended. i'm done with this dangerous vehicle but i don't want anyone driving it. *tr

Took our vehicle to be serviced in 2012 to find out our vehicle was affected by the intermix the radiator cracked and leaked into the transmission they gave us an estimated cost of over $10,000.00 stated it was no good and to trade it in asap said we shouldnt drive it that it was dangerous so we parke dit. i was devistated we did everything in our power made reports called everyone possible nothing! tried to sue however i fell ill (cancer) and couldn't keep our hearing apt here in sacramento ca. its still parked in our garage.

Vehicle engine started skipping while in motion, engine temperature went up to overheated and speed automatically reduced itself to no more than 35mph on the road, caused traffic to avoid vehicle from hitting in the rear end. had to drive small roads to get home. nissan service fixed coolant pump but we found out later this was not the issue as less than 6 months later the engine overheated again, only this time the radiator leaked coolant into the transmission fluid and ruined the entire transmission. we find out that nissan has hundreds or thousands of such incidents and have not issued a recall. our cost to repair is $8,700 for a 6 year old vehicle with less than 100,000 miles on it. *tr

I have a pathfinder 2006 with 110,000 miles on january 9, 2012 i take it to the dealership because it was shaking ones i drove over 60 mph the dealer did a multi- point vehicle inspection and they determined that everything was ok except from the four-wheel-drive chaff joint got excessive play and replace it for new one and yesterday march 7, 2013 i took my pathfinder 2006 to royal palm nissan and the service advisor [xxx]estate it that my car radiator is leaking coolant into the transmission and though that i had to replace it for a new ones and is going to cost me $6400 and he states that that's a common issue with the path finders so if it's a common issue and they do an extended warranties wish there are no good to no body how can they spect a costumer to pay 6400 for a part the they should recall i'm sure i'm not along on this issue and just hope the some busy like you guys can make them do the right thing and stand by their products to avoid any accidents with thousands of vehicles on the road thanks so much for reviewing this lines i appreciated and i hope to hear back from you guys thanks ever such lots. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The engine looses power when driving. i took it to a mechanic and he told me that pathfinder transmission tend to fail or go bad. transmissions on car should last longer. the pathfinder there has been cases where at 100,000 miles it already needs a new transmission. my pathfinder makes a loud noise when im driving. sometimes it takes a while for it to go at a normal speed. this should not be happening at this point. nissan should tend to this problem and fix it. *tr

I took my nissan pathfinder on 3 different occasions for the same problem and nissan is fully aware of the problem.1st visit 11/29/2011, 2nd visit 3/12/2012, 3rd visit 6/11/2012 intermix with coolant and tranny fluid, replaced radiator 800.00, told me to come back and test fluids after 1000 miles, same issue, flushed out the tran fluid 250.00,t old me to come back after 1000 miles to test fluid, same problem. paid 600.00 to clean out transmission pan and whatever bs they told me, now rpms are revving high when i try to take off, and i am at risk for stalling or transmission failing in the middle of intersection or highway. my wife and i are expecting our 1st child in january and i do not feel safe bringing our newborn in this vehicle and putting her life at risk. i called nissan consumer affairs, and lodged a complaint then another rep called me back and said i do not qualify for financial assistance to repair my vehicle because i have 98k on my vehicle and the extended warranty they offered was up to 80k. regardless there are many pathfinder owners with this problem, she displayed no empathy, and kept saying the same thing, "i understand your frustration, but we cannot help you"....unbelievable!! vehicle has 98k and it's paid off. don't want a new vehicle, and want nissan to take responsibility for this issue and for everyone who has this problem! *tr

In october of 2011, my 2006 nissan pathfinder began violently vibrating on the highway when i reached 60 mph. sometimes it would stop when i let up off the gas. other times it would continue to shake. after repeated visits to the mechanics and new tires, rotations, brakes and balancing, we decided to go to a transmission shop. they discovered that there was coolant that had mixed with the transmission fluid. as a matter of fact he had 5 nissan pathfinders on his lot with the same problem. after multiple searches, we discovered that there were hundreds of entries of pathfinder owners with this same problem. eventually, the car started to stall in the middle of the road. very dangerous! i have taken the car to nissan in my town and contacted corporate. i will be filing a civil suit if they do not agree to pay and fix my car that i have had for only 3 years. *tr

Went to dealership and notified them of shuddering when driving in excess of 40mph and check engine light on. was told by the service department that the transmission fluid is 'milky' as a result of coolant mixing in with automatic transmission fluid due to a crack in the radiator. advised repairs to include a transmission cooler would be in excess of $8,000+. also advised that mileage of 91,033 voided extended warranty. (3 years, 80,000 miles) vehicle is non-operable due to total transmission failure. *tr

This began intermittently showing problems on the highway, during acceleration (after letting off the gas pedal to slow) the car would start to shake slightly and lose power before again running smoothly in may 2011. later it started to do it at slower speeds during acceleration. then it would sometimes have one or two clunks during acceleration, before again running smoothly. we took our car again to our mechanic in may 2012, and found that the radiator had been leaking, then gushed into the transmission. we replaced the radiator, and flushed the transmission to help fix the issues. the issues still continue today, although we rarely drive the car and can not afford to purchase an new transmission. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the engine began to shake. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that they could not diagnose the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 74,000.

Dear sir/madam: my husband, our three small daughters, and myself were pulling out of toys r us when the accelerator would not respond. the car jerked and choked and would not respond to the depression of the accelerator. we narrowly avoided being broadsided by a semi-truck! thank goodness my husband swerved and shifted into neutral where we coasted to a stop. it was harrowing to say the least. i immediately took it to our mechanic and explained the problem. he was unable to "reproduce" the symptoms. we have had this problem twice since then and i've contacted nissan usa to no avail. we won't even drive the vehicle. it has been sitting in our driveway since the most recent incident. please advise. regards, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
