We have classified the 404 complaints from 2006 Nissan Pathfinder about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Defective radiator from nissan, dropped fluid into the transmission. as a result, both the transmission and radiator had to be replaced. if the radiator was defected the transmission would still be in tact. this happened just reaching the 100,000 mile mark.
Transmission fluid leaked into transmission causing transmission and radiator failure. was on mainroad at time and had to be towed to mechanics where upon learning this is a typical issue for these vehicles. cannot drive vehicle and repairs are very costly.
Transmission needs to be replaced due to coolant from the radiator leaking into transmission.
While accelerating to get onto an entrance to i-95 my car began to vibrate at about 40 mph and make a roaring noise. the noise went away at about 50 mph. when i took it to my mechanic he said the problem was an known issue that nissan had involving the transmission coolant leaking into the transmission and ruining it. he explained that nissan had offered an extended warranty up to 80,000 miles. my car has 98,000. nissan has known about their defective radiators leaking into the transmissions since 2013 and did not issue a recall. i feel like it is their responsibility to fix this problem for free. when i attempted to trade the car in no one wanted it in trade because of the known issues. i am on a fixed income and can not afford this costly repair or a new vehicle. nissan had left us high and dry and plan to do nothing to help fix a problem that they knew existed. this is criminal! they have cheated us and ignored nissan owners dealing with this problem. i want my car fixed before it gets to 100,000 miles in case they call a cut off at that mileage again! they are totally at fault and responsible for cheating people out of hundreds of thousands dollars and the are getting away with it. my car is parked and i can't drive it for fear of going over 100,000 miles or breaking down completely on the highway and having a fatal accident. i have had to borrow my son's car to go any where i need to go. this is very frustrating and totally unfair that i even have to write this complaint since nissan admits that thousands of their vehicles are known lemons! they should pay up or be prosecuted as any other criminal would be for cheating/stealing from a consumer.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed due to coolant contamination. as a result, the transmission, radiator, and thermostat needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 191,270.
While driving on interstate 25 in south denver, my pathfinder began to sputter and stall. the engine started to overheat as i pulled into a service station about two miles away. i had it towed to christian brothers auto in parker colorado. a radiator part blew, the engine overheated and was destroyed. the steam from the plastic radiator part also damaged the main computer. it was close to $10,000 for all repairs related to the radiator part failure. approximately 8,000 miles later, my daughter and i were driving on i-70 near the vail, colorado exit, and the pathfinder started to jerk violently on the highway going 65mph. i was able to pull over to the side of the road. scary experience for us both. this happened today, 03/24/2016. smoke was coming from under the car. i had it towed to avon auto in avon colorado. they said the transmission is damaged, but they did not have time to look into it further. please call or email me with further questions. Coolant from a faulty radiator leaked into the transmission. ruining the transmission requiring a total replacement.
Total transmission & radiator failure due to coolant leaking into the transmission.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. while driving various speeds, the transmission began to slip gears without warning. the intermittent failure recurred and became progressively worse. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the radiator coolant leaked into the transmission fluid, which caused internal damage to the transmission. the mechanic stated that the transmission would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 143,000.
Car shakes violently when accelerating and jerks. have been told i probably have a crack in raidiator and fluids leaked in transmission will be thousands to fix. after looking on internet. i see many people with problem and nissan is not covering costs.
Driving down the road the transmission started slipping and quite pulling in traffic and was almost hit from rear on the interstate. found out radiator failed and filled transmission full of coolant and caused complete failure of both systems.
Known problem by nissan where radiator fluid leaks into transmission and ruins transmission. repair cost of $3900.00. no recall.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. while attempting to complete a left turn, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the radiator hose cracked and leaked fluid into the transmission, which contaminated the transmission. it was diagnosed that a component within the steering column fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 157,000.
Vehicle jerks and stalls and even cuts off during driving. i was driving on the interstate and went to change lanes and the engine just shut off. i tried to pull to the side of the road quickly but i had no engine power. i coasted to the shoulder of the road and called my husband to pick me up. i had the vehicle towed to my mechanic and he advised us that the automatic transmission fluid had contaminated the anti-freeze and vice versa and that i'd need a new transmission and radiator installed for $5500.00. he also added that nissan had just lost a class action lawsuit to repair the vehicles affected but the catch is that your vehicle can not have over 100,000 miles on it. from my research in the forums, the issue does not arise until the vehicle mileage exceeds 100,000, so we're basically screwed for repairs on our nissans with 100,001 miles or more. i'm double screwed as i have 2 2006 nissan's. my other vehicle is currently inoperable due to atf contamination.
Radiator failure 1/7/2011 at 73,958 miles, causing transmission failure, repaired under warranty by nissan dealer, then again failure at 1/15/2016 150,500 miles - same problem.
The transmission failed on my 2006 nissan pathfinder due to a poor engineering issue from nissan. this problem is a very dangerous problem. transmission can fail at anytime.
Coolant leaked into transmission causing car to not start and not usable.
At first i thought my heater was the problem. i took my truck down to the dealer for inspection, and a mixture of coolant and transmission fluid was noticed. the dealer told me i was going to need a new transmission, radiator, and hoses. they said all of that would cost me $8,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. while driving approximately 60 mph, all the instrument panel warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle stalled and failed to restart. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where the transmission and radiator were replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 125,000. updated 03/09/16 *lj *cn *tr
Our 2006 nissan pathfinder was having issues where it would shutter heavily while trying to accelerate, the power would drop off and the car would rev high. after taking it to the local nissan dealer, they found the cat converter bad and the plugs fouled. they fixed that and the car ran "better" but was not quite running perfect again. several months later we were suspect of a similar issue as last time where the car would lag before shifting especially when we would step on it. so, we took it back to nissan and this time they found the issue that thousands of people are having where the radiator cracks and leaks coolant into the transmission. after being quoted $5900 for the fix, i asked about this issue i've seen online and not until then did they look into it and see that nissan put out an extended warranty on this matter. i still have to pay a $3000 deductible which is bs but it is better than $5900
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the vehicle decelerated independently as the check engine warning light illuminated. the failure recurred three times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that coolant from the radiator leaked into the transmission which caused the transmission to be severely corroded. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 113,000.
While driving on turnpike at 75mph transmission slipped gear started shuddering whole truck and lost speed. attempted to step on gas to get to shoulder of road and rpms just went up but wheels did not move. almost was hit by multiple vehicles. attempted to manually shift vehicle to get it to shoulder and had vehicle towed. transmission is junk due to coolant leaking.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that the vehicle was constantly remaining stuck in first gear and in reverse. the vehicle was towed to the residence and then taken to a dealer for diagnosis. the vehicle was also inspected and diagnosed by more than one independent mechanic. the mechanics all informed that there was a failure in the transmission due to the radiator having an internal premature fracture, which caused the coolant to leak into the transmission. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the radiator and the transmission needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 142,320.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. while driving 40 mph, an abnormal sound emitted from the vehicle. an independent mechanic diagnosed that the transmission fluid was mixing with the engine coolant. as a result, the transmission and radiator needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance since the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 126,000.
Transmission needs to be replaced due to radiator fluid leaking into transmission. nissan had an agreement to help cover costs but it only covered vehicles with less the 100k miles.
I have a nissan pathfinder with 88,000 miles on it. somehow coolant leaked into my transmission causing severe damage. nissan is telling me oh well since my warranty was up at 5yrs 60,000 miles. i've heard that this is a known problem with nissan and that they aren't doing anything to help. does anyone have any ideas??? thanks!
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. while the vehicle was stopped, it started to accelerate independently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the mechanic stated that coolant from the radiator was leaking into the transmission. the mechanic also stated that the radiator and transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 156,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. while driving 5 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle hesitated and jerked before moving forward. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission and the radiator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 62,000.
Radiator has been leaking into the transmission which has caused it to fail.
It was on saturday aug 8th, while on a family week end get away, while driving in stop and go traffic in the carpool lane of the freeway, the transmission started to slip and jump a couple of times.. i was pressing the gas pedal with no movemen, i didnt know what to do, so i turned it off and back on again and put it in 44 fearing for the safety of my family that was with me, i got it to move and pulled it over to center devider. i turned it off again and took it out of 4x4 and let it set for a few minutes. we were going to call aaa, but i decided to try it again, and was able to drive away safely. that was 2 weeks ago, i have only driven it around my house and haven't had that happen again. i am hesitating taking it to the dealer because i was just there a couple of months ago replacing the timing chain tensioner. $1850
My cars radiator cracked and leaked into the transmission. the mix of coolant and transmission fluid damaged the transmission and quite possibly damaged my engine. nissan knows about the radiator because they extended the warranty on it. the repairs for this incident are high the nissan dealer i took it to quoted me $4,591.43 to replace the transmission and the radiator and that is with the warranty they claim they have on it. the dealer also told me any other damage caused by this faulty radiator would not be covered and i would have to pay for the repairs to any other components as well they told they me might be an additional $2,000 so nearly $7,000. i had know choice but sell the car off as scrap as the repairs would cost more than the car itself. a failure of all these parts at once is a safety hazard to everyone.
I took my pathfinder in to the local nissan dealer for a check up--chugging at 35mph, check engine light sporadically goes on and off, gas gauge stopped functioning. nissan ran the diagnostics and told me the check engine light is because i need to pay $500.00 to replace the fuel sensor. i believe this is a part that was previously recalled. i don't know if nissan considers the fix once and done but vehicles driven in salt and sand winter conditions will need extra attention. the transmission trouble is something nissan knows about but refuses to recall. i was told i needed to replace the radiator and transmission--over $5000.00. if nissan knows about these problems, why must i, a now unhappy owner, pay for these repairs?
I am in the middle of a road trip with my children and suddenly my pathfinder would not accelerate going uphill. i thankfully made it up the hill and onto a highway on ramp. the grace of god is all that kept me from being struck by a tractor trailer taking the same exit. the pathfinder shuddered and i pulled into the shoulder (a blessing that there was just enough space for one) and it turned off right there. not even 85,000 miles on an '06 pathfinder and i had to have the steering column replaced after something broke it in it 2 yrs ago, now this. i had it towed to the closest nissan dealer, 35 miles from where it stopped and hundreds of miles from home. the dealer told me it was the known issue with the cheap plastic radiators and transmission. i am now in a rental car, looking online for a hotel (i was planning on driving up to canada and an now stuck in ohio), and have to pay $3,000 to get this fixed because of the age of the car. nevermind that it is a known issue!!
Brought my vehicle into the local nissan dealership in 2013 for a basic service and oil change. the complaints about the radiator/transmission cooling system were well established. there was no documented information in the service visit file on my 2006 pathfinder to show that an inspection for this known defect was done. this brings us today where my pathfinder currently sits at the nissan dealership in need of a new radiator and transmission. as a result of the defect, while driving my truck started to overheat and then the transmission dropped into 1st gear while going 50 mph. while in traffic with one of my children in the car, this caused the vehicle to rapidly decelerate. so now i have to decide to pay for this repair, that is done using the same parts with no guarantee it will not happen again. this is the third serious issue that i've had with this truck.
In 2012, soon after we purchased our used 2006 nissan pathfinder, we knew it was a mistake. not only did the fuel indicator not work (noticed the day we drove it off the lot) the suv just didn't feel right while driving. i have been stranded in 100 degree weather on numerous occasions because the fuel indicator says i have fuel, but the light would immediately come on, and the car would cut off & lock up while i was driving it! fast forward to last year, 2015, we started experiencing problems when shifting into and out of park/drive/reverse. the transmission was slipping and sometimes wouldn't even change gears, just keep revving up the engine and not going anywhere. it has left my children and me stranded on numerous occasions since then. finally, about 6 months ago, the pathfinder decided to not move out of park at all after cranked. today, 9/14/16, the transmission left me stranded in the middle of heavy 5 o'clock traffic. i barely had it pulled off the road when i almost got rear-ended! the transmission won't change gears, won't propel the car forward (or backwards) and the shop said it needed a whole new transmission, and maybe a new radiator! i am a student and my husband is in law enforcement - we certainly don't have an extra $4,000 lying around for repairs to a vehicle that should have been recalled! so, it is parked in our driveway, completely immobile and we have a car payment coming up next week (and every month afterwards). we are underwater, still owing $8,000 for a car we thought we'd drive forever, that is valued at around $4,000 on a good day with no transmission issues. something has to be done! nissan needs to repair our car asap!
The transmission of my pathfinder went bad because of defective radiator. it mixed transmission oil and antifreeze in the transmission. it will cost me 6k+ to repair. i read a lot of people had this problem and i want nissan to fix it.
As i was driving on a residential road my 2006 nissan pathfinder hesitated to move as i pulled over i noticed leaking from underneath my truck. i open up the radiator cap noticed that transmission fluid in the radiator fluid has mixed
I backed out of my driveway onto the main road and went to put the vehicle into drive and it would not go into drive. when i got it to the repair shop they said that the radiator had leaked into the transmission and caused it to ruin the transmission.
I was driving stopped at a light has i began to proceed the truck had no speed an the car behind was going at a high speed with other cars on right and left as i tried to accelerate it would'nt go. continued to go and at slow pace and then picked up speed. this continued each time i stopped finally was able to get to destination and it completly stopped. had recently replaced converter and now transmission.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan pathfinder. while driving at 55 mph, the contact noticed vibrations underneath the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission and the radiator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 114,000. the vin was unavailable.
The transmission fluid and the radiator fluid are mixed up due to vehicle design issues. nissan is conveniently getting out of the complaint by putting in stuff that there is no warranty on the vehicle. *tr
Another classic story of nissan pathfinder transmission failing due to engine coolant leaking into the transmission fluid cooler system resulting in catastrophic failure of the transmission. *tr
Radiator coolant leak into transmission caused complete engine failure while driving on a 6 lane highway. ability to accelerate or maintain speed ceased when pressing gas pedal. coasted on slight downward hill for 1/4 of a mile or a little more allowing time to turn onto a side street where vehicle stopped completely.
Purchased vehicle from car lot feb. 28, 2015. drove this vehicle 5 times and the coolant leaked. flushed system notice there was stop leak in radiator. now my transmission slips and truck shakes during acceleration. this was a previous issue before i bought the vehicle because the shaking occurred when driving home. i thought this was just the tires needing to be balanced, but after research i know that it was from the coolant previously leaking into the transmission, and now i am left to deal with it. *tr

My transmission went out on a busy intersection due to this coolant leaking into my transmission. my children were in the back seat when my transmission failed. glad we didn't end up in a reckless and that my children are safe. there is numerous reports of this happening to these pathfinders how is this not a recall. *tr
The transmission started to slip, which needed to be taken out of overdrive from time to time. after a few months the transmission gave out completely on the highway. it will rev up, but will not drive. apparently they are famous for the gasket leaking engine coolant with the oil. they should have all been recalled. *tr
The service manager shocked me when she said i needed a new transmission ,because antifreeze had leaked into transmission and ruined it.she proceeded to tell me i need a timing chain ,u-joints , muffler clamps and that i should have taken better care of my truck. she advised i should get a new truck the cost would be a total of 4,500.00 dollars for the repair!.i left in disbelief knowing a truck with 65k miles should not need a transmission.i researched on the web and found that nissan was aware of a defect in the radiator that caused this problem , not only on my truck but other nissan models as well. they settled a lawsuit that favors nissan , but neglected to inform any of there customers like myself with a heads up if the issue has not happened yet.i have to pay the first 3000.00 dollars of the repair and nissan will pick up the rest , this is outrageous the cause of the problem was a defective radiator, this should have been recalled.the service adviser did not notify me of this issue at the dealership and as of yet has not sent me a detailed estimate of the repair.this should be a safety issue since the trans could slip at some time causing an accident.nissan consumer affairs division has not responded with a remedy with my complaint . i have lost faith in the local dealer and with nissan product as well. will not buy another nissan again.p.s. i took my vehicle to another repair facility and there estimate alone for the job was 4,555.00 dollars, when driving it to them i could hardly drive over 40 mph and the transmission started slipping , again this should be a safety recall !.if i needed power to change lanes or get out of the way of another car i would have been killed....updated 09/22/15 *bf *tr
Just after exiting freeway, vehicle's automatic transmission failed to engage in any forward gears. this caused forward movement to reduce to extremely slow motion. if this occurred while on the freeway, and if a driver panicked, not immediately moving off to the side, it could have caused an accident with potentially serious consequences. this problem is widely known and has been dealt with to a limited extent. don't see a place on this complaint form to indicate what the problem is. transmission was contaminated with coolant due to lower trans line in radiator's lower tank being ruptured. radiator was also cross contaminated with transmission fluid. this common problem in certain model 2005 - 2007 nissan's is not currently a recall (it should be), and the limited extended warranty in the nissan settlement offers no reimbursement for vehicles having this problem with over 100,000 miles, as is the case with most of us. i hope you are aware of the several thousand people who have had this potentially dangerous problem over the years, and the thousands more who will continue to have this same problem in the years to come.
Car shut down on dart train tracks, transmission failed to work, radiator had oil and leaked into transmission. *tr
