Problems with 2005 Nissan Pathfinder ENGINE

On average, the 2005 Nissan Pathfinder starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 122 449 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2005 Nissan Pathfinder

The torque converter in the transmission failed. i noticed the vehicle stuttering at different speeds during my time on the road. i had an independent mechanic check it and a nissan dealer confirm the diagnosis. i was told the radiator and the entire transmission had to be replaced. i found numerous complaints on-line similar to mine; the 2005 model showed the most problems with the transmission. i don't have the $5,000 to repair the vehicle. the company extended some warranties due to this problem, but all had expired or i had too many miles (131,000), and a copay of $3000 was required. not much of an offer from a large thriving company. *tr

Have problem with cooling system leaking into transmission. *tr

I got my oil changed at team nissan in lithia springs, and on the 2nd day of driving the vehicle my 2005 pathfinder overheated. i immediately called team nissan and told them of the problem, and they told me that they apologize and to bring it in. well the suv was too hot to put on the road at that point so i stopped by wal-mart to add coolant. i let the truck cool off and then added coolant. the levels then appeared normal and i made my way to team nissan. when i got there they told me that they could see me and to come back the next day. while i was talking with the rep. i noticed that there was a guy topping off my fluids under the hood. when i came back the next day, they check it and told me that i had no coolant and that my radiator fluid had leaked into the transmission and that the fluids were mixing. the repairs totaled up to $5028.43 including a radiator replacement, coolant flush, and a transmission replacement. i told him that i had heard of other recalls and complaints about this (i had just heard one of the reps call a customer and tell him that his recall on the same issues were complete and that he could pick up his vehicle), but he said that nothing was showing in the system. i then told him that i could not get that done at this time and i enquired that i have not had this issue at other places after an oil change. he gave me an excuse as the guy did the day before and shrugged me off. he suggested that i needed to check the coolant every other day and that the problem was likely to continue. so the waiting game begins. *tr

Parked pathfinder in driveway. i went to leave and the vehicle won't start. lights and everything turns on. the engine won't crank up. looked up some issues with the pathfinder and maybe there is a cross contamination of the engine coolant. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while driving approximate 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the camshaft sensor and the crank sensor needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 126,115.

I was driving the vehicle when all of a sudden it shut off causing cars behind me to swerve off the road. i am a female the wheel was very hard for me to steer off the road. i thank god that nothing happen to my 8 year old in the car. apparently someone has to die before they do a recall. *js

Not sure if this is the right choice but i am filing a complaint about my radiator and transmission w fluids mixing this vehicle has had do many issues i have spent a fortune which i do not have. all i wat is peace of mind knowing i will reach my destination safely. i ask that nissan take responsibilty and recall these defective radiators

Coolant and transmission fluid mixed and caused the car to shake and not accelerate. this was a recall item and by the time it happened at 79k miles the dealer would only cover half. i had to pay $2500 for a repair that they new was defected. i was driving on a major highway and the car stalled and i had to put flashers on to keep cars from hitting me. this is a safety issue for anyone who still owns this truck. i now have another $750 bill to repair the fuel sending unit that went out after recall mileage expired. they know it's a problem and should fix it when it happens.

I am driving a group of co-workers out for lunch. i pull in the turning lane to wait for an opportunity to turn. when it was time to make the turn, i pressed the gas and the truck did not move. i pressed the brake again to check and make sure i had not accidentally hit the gear stick. everything looked right so i tried to give it gas again. the engine revved loudly but again there was hesitation in movement. finally, after what seemed like forever, the truck slowly turned. i tried to drive back to the office but had the same issue. i would stop and as soon as i pressed the gas, it would take forever before i would actually take off. the truck moved at a very slow speed as if i was pulling a large load. turns out it is my transmission. how upsetting when i had no previous warning. more upsetting when i begin to do my research and found out a co-worker with the same year pathfinder has the same problem and looking online it appears everyone with this model truck has had this issue or will eventually. why is nissan not doing something about this beyond continuously extending the warranty with huge co-pays that at the end of the day do not really help the consumer? nissan needs to do something about this. how long will it take for this complaint to be reviewed? *tr

Vehicle was stop at red light of very busy intersection. when light turned green the vehicle accelerated and then would only coast in neutral while transmission was not engaging. wife and 3 children were stuck in middle of intersection. had to turn the vehicle off and then on to get transmission to re-engage and drive. this issue happened a half dozen more times. this owner took vehicle to local nissan dealer and was charged for computer analysis. this owner was told there was a "known" issue with transmission of this particular vehicle being contaminated from inner cooler. this owner was told that it would cost over $5500 to fix. this owner did intense research on safety and mechanical problem and found thousands of nissan owners with same issue. this vehicle needs to be recalled for "known" issue. *tr

I had the same issue as many others. coolant leaked into the transmission causing hard shifts, and shuttering while accelerating.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was towed to a mechanic, who performed a diagnostic test and notice a defective ems relay. the mechanic replaced the defective ems relay. after the repair the contact noticed nhtsa campaign i.d. 10v517000 (engine and engine cooling). the contact called the manufacturer to see if the vehicle was included however, the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was included in the recall. the contact never received notification for the recall. the failure mileage was 122,648.

The vehicle engine timing chain had made a slight "whirring" sound for many months - nothing really loud enough to cause alarm, but noticeable. then when idling the vehicle in my driveway, the engine began to whine loudly, and then all of a sudden the engine lost power and began to emit a loud slapping/ clunking sound. the problem is that the timing chain has failed and the chain is slapping around inside of the timing cover. i was lucky that the vehicle was idling in my driveway at the time! there are thousands of reported incidents to be found on the internet where nissan owners have reported that timing chains have failed, and some owners in california have filed a class-action lawsuit to force nissan to acknowledge this factory defect. nissan knows about this problem - there are factory service bulletins to repair this problem, but no recall. this engine defect is dangerous - engine failure on busy ny / nj / ct highways can be life-threatening!! why is the nissan timing chain defect not deemed a mandatory factory defect recall?? as a former mechanic, i can say with confidence that modern vehicle engine timing chains can be reasonably expected to last the life of the engine! timing chains are not considered a regular maintenance item! not only does timing chain failure put the vehicle passengers in extreme danger, but is very expensive to repair. why should consumers have to bear the financial responsibility to repair a factory defect? at this time the vehicle is sitting "dead" in my driveway - i do not have $2000 required to repair the factory defective timing chain assembly! please force nissan to recall and repair their defective timing chains!!! *tr

Vehicle revved erratically, then jerked then cut off . took vehicle to dealer who diagnosed the problem as "radiator full of oil and transmission fluid and smells burnt-fluids mixing-need transmission. *tr

My transmission is going out took it to the dealership and they change the transmission oil and a month later is still doing the same. take it to another mechanic and he said the transmission oil was black and smelled old. the dealership ask when did i last change the oil and i had forgot the i had the quick lube place flush the transmission a couple of years ago. call them back and told them what the other mechanic said and i took it back to the dealership and he said that not to bad we can only get so much out. the other mechanic flesh it and change the oil. i'm still having trouble with my transmission it goes real slow when backing up. i have keep my car up real good because i don't have the money to keep buying a new car. *tr

Purchased this suv from a private owner who replaced the radiator and transmission cooler years ago, had it confirmed from their mechanic and when i drove this pathfinder it has a bump in the trans. was told by nissan of paducah, autozone of paducah that it was the cat converter was plugged. replaced the cat converter, still has the bump/slip in the transmission. found out through several websites and forums that nissan needs to do a recall on this problem. i've been part of z clubs in the usa for over 25 years and a loyal nissan owner and can't believe nissan won't take care of this problem in their suv's and small trucks... *tr

While traveling down the highway at approximately 40 miles per hour i felt like i was riding over rumble strips in the road. the road was smooth, so that was not the problem. i later found out that i had a transmission problem. upon further investigation, i found that the radiator coolant fluid leaked into the transmission and destroyed both the transmission and radiator. upon further investigation i found that this is a problem experienced by many other nissan pathfinder owners (years 2005 - 2010). this is definitely a manufacturing defect not recognized by nissan. *tr

I started having trouble with my car exceeding as i would push the gas petal. this started happening around 140,000 miles on the vehicle. i took in to a mechanic who stated that it may be the radiator. i purchased a new radiator and as he put it in he said it looked as if the fluids were mixed. i put all new fluids in the car. still i couldn't get the car to exceed past 30 mph. i parked the car because of the cost in repair. i finally took it to the nissan dealer who confirmed that it was my transmission that was gone in the car.

Nearly got into an accident on the interstate when my car started jerking out of control and then slowed down drastically to less than 30 mph miles away from an exit ramp. my pathfinder had to be towed to the dealership i purchased it from. less than 100,000 miles and still under extended warranty. when i called to ask the service department to confirm what needs to be replaced, they said the my transmission has to be replaced from the damage by the coolant. a flush would be a patch fix that may not work, and only last a month best. my radiator has to be replaced- my car is overheating because of the failure. and my engine has to be completely flushed out- if not totally replaced because of the coolant flowing into the engine as well. over $4000 possibly as high as $8000 according to the dealership. they said they can't even repair it because its so bad my car has to be sent off. warranty company denied the claim because the issue is caused by faulty part "transmission cooler" which everyone is aware of and not covered under warranty. i paid $20,000 cash for my vehicle a year ago! nissan lost a class action law suit earlier this year for thousands of dollars in damages, and i am too late to file. i can't believe the government hasn't forced a recall on this. thousands of people and vehicles are affected and quit honestly its dangerous! i almost got killed on the interstate with my children in the car when everything failed. this happened on multiple years and the government is okay with this? the dealership and warranty company refuse to cover my claim. someone needs to hold nissan accountable. this is unacceptable! *tr

I was driving from work to pick up my kids from school and felt my vehicle begin to jerk, my service engine light came on so i pulled into a gas staion near by. when i got out of my vehicle i saw a huge puddle of radiator fluid gushing out. i called my local nissan dealership and they told me to bring it in but keep my eye on the h & c gauge and make sure it doesn't reach up to h by any means. so i go and pull out of the gas station and go about 2 blocks away and immediately the gauge was rising to h quickly, so i pull over and shut the truck off and called a tow-truck to have it towed to the dealership. after nissan looked at my truck i'm to replace both radiator and transmission! i looked up my problems with my truck and found out that like i, many of other american people are having or had the same problem and nissan doesn't want to acknowledge that this is a serious problem for any nissan owner and issue a full recall on these specific problems. instead i'm stuck paying a $3,000 co-pay of a warranty that doesn't help me out at all.... i can't come up with that type of money spontaneously. my vehicle is my lifeline and now i'm without that due to on-going issue with nissan pathfinder trucks. something has got to give seriously if i would've known that this was eventually going to happen (and it does happen) i would've never bought this truck plain & simple... i advise the consumers to stay away from nissan unless they don't mind all the repairs and driving hasards nissan has to offer. *tr

I'm one of many victims that have endured faulty fuel sending units and inaccurate gas gauges that cause me to run out of gas while driving down the road. with such a widespread problem, it is a pure scam that no recall has been issued. nissan simply extends the warranty to 72,000 miles, which does nothing to help the thousands of victims with more mileage. just as they did with the radiator defect that contaminated the transmission, nissan is getting away with offering help up only to the point when the problem begins to appear. this makes them appear they are doing something, but they are doing nothing for the vast majority of victims. how can you let them get away with this approach? it leaves victims without help, and leaves obviously defective cars on the road. it's dangerous to run out of gas on the side of the road, especially when you live in cold climates and have small children. help. *tr

I reported a complete loss of motive power. the auto repair diagnosed the problem as a failed transmission fluid cooler located in the radiator assembly that allowed coolant to mix with and contaminate the automatic transmission fluid, resulting in damaged internal transmission components and a damaged internal transmission computer. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle decelerated to 30 mph independently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where they informed the contact that the radiator and transmission would need to be replaced. the vehicle was currently being inspected by the dealer for a second opinion. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while traveling approximately 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration power. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was found that the radiator and transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 62,880.

There is problem with this model vehicle. thousands of people are having the same problem. the radiator has a leak in it causing the transmission oil to mix with the radiator coolant creating a mixture of gravy type substance. the transmission and the radiator are filled up with this substance. the engine is not being cooled down. the vehicle starts to vibrate after a certain speed. when you pop up the hood it smells like plastic burning. *tr

It's the typical nissan pathfinder (2005-2011) transmission/radiator failure due to fluids from both devices mixing and causing catastrophic failure of both. nissan informs me that they certainly understand my problem, which is comforting, but will not pay a dime. never buy another one. *tr

My pathfinder locked in 4wd while switch was still in 2wd and would not start back after towing to dealership i find out it is the radiator leaking into the transmission and both will have to be replaced at $4900.00. if my wife would of been on a road with more traffic it would of been bad for her and my two year old. we have only owned the car for a year and nothing but problems out of it and our altima. we have always been nissan owners but will never buy again this is evidently a really common problem and nissan's customer appreciation is awful. *tr

On july 25, 2013 the car made a skipping sound when i turned it on and a few days prior it would make a rolling action when stopped. on july 26, 2013 i was in route and after being on the road for 7 minutes at a stop light the vehicle would not accelerate when i pressed on the gas pedal. after numerous attempts it started driving however it would not go past 15 miles making a grinding sound/noise. i was able to get it to the closest mechanic. the mechanic informed me that the a/c coolant had gone into the transmission requiring it to be flushed however not guaranteeing that it will work. i called nissan on july 26 2013 and was informed that my warranty had expired and that they would not assist in repairing the transmission. at this time, the problem is trying to be fixed and expected to be significantly costly. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact had to wait an hour before the vehicle would restart with the illumination of the check engine light. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was determined that the cam shaft position sensor failed. the vehicle was repaired. the failure and current mileages were 148,000.

During the time i was driving the pathfinder i notice that the transmission started pulling. i got into the turning lane to pull over to check it out but when i stopped and then try to turn the vehicle would not move more then 3 feet that left me in the middle of the road. lucky no one was hurt but it could have been a bad situation if i was on a busy street. *tr

The vehicle has had all sorts of issues starting with the brakes when one brake shoe totally disintegrated and evidently ruptured brake lines at around 61,000 miles. new brake replacement almost $900. since that time (the vehicle now has 75000 miles) the transmission has continually slipped, the gas gauges and all other gauges work intermittently, and the emissions test last month showed possible catalytic converter issues (there are evidently two). when taken in for service the service technician suggested i get rid of the vehicle because it was notorious for cross contamination of coolant and transmission fluid. continuing to drive it would eventually destroy the transmission, and even now may have permanent damage. when contacting nissan about possible recalls and the supposed settled class action lawsuit concerning the transmission contamination, i was told i would need documentation of all service done to the vehicle to receive $800 toward the necessary $3800 repair cost just for the contamination leak. if anyone is considering purchasing this or any other nissan product, i would avoid it at all cost.

Transmission went out as i was driving it on the highway. *tr

The radiator is cracked and has leaked fluid into transmission. *tr

Hi i brought my 2005 nissan pathfinder in december 2012 from kings auto porsche and the car fax was clear on it. i brought it with 63k miles on it and i now have 90k on it. i never received and paperwork such as any recalls campaigns. about the end of may or first week of june of 2013 my car started to do a vibration and then acted like it wanted to stall and hit real hard into gear. it wasn't till june 14, 2013 that it put me on the side of the road running hot to where i pulled over in 80+ degree weather with my 2 year old son and my 3 month old daughter in the car. i started to search the internet to find a few recalls and many unhappy nissan customers and find that nissan has many complaints on the radiator fluid leaking into the transmission causing a milky substances. i knew nothing about any recall and find out that many are very upset with nissan who isn't fixing this issue after their vehicles hit 80k. i am very unhappy with this issues and feel that nissan should be responsible for this. please contact me on my issues. as i will be going higher up and to the media like the rest of your unhappy customers! thank you for your time and looking at my letter. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that radiator fluid leaked into the transmission. as a result, the transmission and radiator needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 134,000. *tr

My 2005 nissan pathfinder has on numerous occasions, just stopped running and turned off. it does this while sitting idle, say in line. it does this while driving down the street. it just turns off! now i'm having trouble re-starting it! *tr

2005 nissan pathfinder was locking up & stalling at low speeds june 2013. i took it to nissan & paid $400 for supposedly a bad camshaft & bad crankshaft. not more than a month later the vehicle is stalling yet again. furious i took my vehicle to a non nissan dealer. the other mechanic felt ecm recall & faulty ecm was the cause. he took it back to nissan & insisted the do the recalled part & the bad ecm. service was upset that he went in there telling them the problem. they free of charge got my car going again. supposedly my key had "reset" itself. which "could be caused by a battery being dead for too long or being jump started". our battery was new & only maybe 6 months old. nissan service manager claimed she checked the ground & it was all ok. just the catalytic converters needed replacement for about $2000 but were not the cause of stalling or the key resetting itself. she insisted the ecm was good & the recalled part had nothing to do with it. a week later & here i am again with a car that wont start. this time the nissan tech came to the store where i was stranded at. his machine couldn't even read the codes & he said maybe it was ground wires in my dash or the ecm but hard to say unless i paid to have it looked at again! of course i have no choice but for them to look at it. i wouldn't mind as most for minor repairs/maitenance but it seems this year/model is pure crap. after reading other complaints i realize that my car shaking at 60+ miles when i do hit the freeway is a huge problem as well! we live in a small town where we don't usually drive those high speeds so i never really thought much of it until now. nissan knows very well these are huge problem cars yet doesn't care! these vehicles are not safe. the stalling has happened at intersections or driving!!

From stop transmission failed to engage. checked fluid found water in transmission from failed cooling line thru radiator/ trans cooling line. *tr

Transmission is in safe mode due to radiator fluid leaking into transmission. transmission and radiator need to be replaced. *tr

Having the same problem that the nissan put out a recall for. an alarming number of nissan xterra, pathfinder and frontier owners are stepping forward with stories about their cracked radiators which are causing coolant to leak into the transmission. once mixed with the transmission fluid this lethal combination kills the valves, seals and torque converter -- rendering your entire transmission useless. this issue is currently contained to the 2005 - 2007 model years, but we're keeping our eyes open for reports from other years. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while attempting to accelerate, the vehicle stalled and the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the radiator and transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage 105,000. *tr

While driving on a local street in my neighborhood at 35 mph on my way to pick up my son from school, the pathfinder began to lose power. i press on the gas and the pathfinder would not go any faster, it was hesitating and seemed like it was going to stop. i made to the mechanic and was told the radiator had leaked into the transmission. the mechanic then advised the radiator and transmission would have to be replaced at a cost of $5828. i am upset and completely in shock when he tells nissan has an extended warranty however it only covers you up to 100,000 miles. nissan is aware of this issue and if it happened at 100,000 i would have brought it in for servicing. i paid over 30,000 for the pathfinder brand new and after eight years this is what i am left with, no recourse? *tr

I was driving about 40-45 m/h and the car stop accelerating, i took the car to the mechanic and he say it was the transmission($7,000.00) so i look it up in the internet and a lot of people have the same problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, a strong burning odor emitted from under the hood and the vehicle lost acceleration power. the contact was able to move the vehicle into a parking area. the contact inspected the vehicle and found smoke. the contact drove the vehicle home. the mechanic inspected the vehicle and found that the radiator failed and caused the radiator fluid to leak into the transmission. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure and current mileage was 127,525.

During the month of december 2012 i had my nissan truck serviced. the diagnostic test recommended to replace rear differential fluid, replace cabin air filter, replace windshield wiper blades, air filter, perform engine coolant exchange , transmission fluid exchange, power steering system fluid exchange, perform brake system fluid exchange, and fuel injection . i also had to replace the catalytic converter, which was done by nissan. i had all of these services performed by the nissan automotive department. on february 28 2013, my service engine soon light comes on along with sensor light indicating a door is open. however, no doors were open. i take the truck back to nissan, and they tell me the transmission is about to go out!!!! how is this possible? i have always taken my truck to nissan to perform the service . i am outraged!!!! all of the service needed has always been performed by nissan. please help!!!! *tr

My pathfinder began to shudder and make a deep rumbling noise while trying to maintain a constant speed anywhere between 40-55pmh. i took it to the dealership this morning and was told this afternoon that there was a crack in the intercooler inside the radiator and it had leaked coolant into the transmission fluid. it has caused major damage to the transmission. the radiator and the transmission has to be replaced. the tech said the estimated cost will be $5300. *tr

After having the transmission and radiator replaced twice (3/12 and 10/12) as i was driving 65 miles per hour on the highway, all lights on dashboard came on, car died. i had no power and somehow managed to get to the side of the highway slowing for the length between two exits until i could steer into guardrail to stop the vehicle. car was smoking, coolant system mechanic thinks let go and engine cracked, nissan refuses to buy back car that was a lemon in the first place. this is a safety issue that they did not fix. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan pathfinder. while driving approximately 45 mph, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal and noticed the vehicle would not accelerate. after continually applying pressure to the accelerator pedal the vehicle responded. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that fluid from the radiator was leaking into the transmission and caused corrosion. the technician stated the transmission and radiator would have to be replaced. there was an investigation under nhtsa action number: dp12004 (power train:automatic transmission: cooling unit and lines) that could have been related to the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 139,000.

Radiator cracked and coolant leaked into transmission. i did some research, this happens to all 2005-2010 pathfinders. very expensive repair. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan pathfinder. the contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, an unusual noise could be heard coming from the engine compartment. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the transmission was flushed and the radiator was replaced. the technician stated that the transmission exhibited internal damage as a result of coolant leaking from the radiator. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 10v517000 (engine and engine cooling) due to the fact that it had exceeded the 100,000 mile limit. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,720.
