We have classified the 152 complaints from 2010 Nissan Maxima about STEERING into the following categories.
Came to work and couldn't get car started. had to call tow truck and get delivered to mossy nissan dealership. with only 30,705.00 miles on my car thought this was very unusual for such a major part to go out. *tr
My car wouldn't start, so i called aaa and they tested the battery and determined the battery was not the issue. no sound, no power and the key indicator light was on, clearly not recognizing my key fob. i got a ride home 30 miles away and returned with my alternate key fob thinking it could be a key fob battery issue. the alternate key fob also did not work. i had the car towed to the local nissan dealer and they said it was a problem with the steering wheel lock, not releasing, and the replacement part is $895.00 and not in stock. many of the nissan forums i looked up on line also experience this problem, too. hello is anyone listening or taking note? shouldn't this many complaints equate to a parts recall?? *tr
I went to the store to buy some groceries before work. when i returned to car my intelligent key wouldn't work. i was stranded in the parking lot. i had my 2010 nissan maxima towed to the nearest nissan dealership. they told me that the electrical steering wheel column lock failed. it cost me $876.00 to get it replaced. i contacted nissan customer service. i told them that my car was built in sept 09 and it should have been under the recall of the 2009 altima. the recall was for the same problem. faulty electrical steering wheel column lock. they research my vehicle and couldn't find any open recalls for my model year. *tr

Electric steering column lock malfunctioned. the "key" light is on and will not start. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start and the steering wheel was loose without the key in the ignition. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. the contact discovered that the escl steering column lock needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
The steering column can be adjusted to a user's preferred position. i have experienced a gradual "falling" of the steering column position. i can readjust using the electronic adjustment lever, however it will again "fall" in position, blocking the view of the speedometer gauge. the change is so gradual that it is not noticed until it blocks the speedometer, which if that occurred at the wrong time, could cause a driver to inadvertently travel at an unsafe speed, and lead to an accident.
The steering wheel lock became faulty and vehicle will not start. the same part number of steering wheel lock was put into the nissan maxima, nissan gt-r, and nissan 370z. the part was recalled in the gt-r, however it hasn't been recalled in the maxima or 370z. the total work for the repair is $1300. nissan should be responsible for the costs of the repair due to a faulty steering wheel lock. nissan recently came out with a revision to the steering wheel lock because the part was faulty. *tr
Steering lock mechanism failure. unable to start vehicle, not covered under warranty for 2010 model year, same part failed in 2009 model year, warranty extended for 2009 only. *tr
The steering wheel lock broke not allowing car to start. *tr
My steering column went out with the car having 62,000 miles there is a recall on the 2009 but not the 2010. to fix this issue it was 900.00 and nissan refused to provide any assistance and its a known issue with their cars. i was very disappointed the car just stopped working out of no where and was completely locked up. *tr
My steering lock unit went out. nissan quoted me 900 to get the issue fixed which isn't covered under warranty. however, its a known fact that many nissans experience this problem and should be covered under the warranty. i only had the car 1 year. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was found that the steering shift lock failed. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 49,000. *tr
My 2010 nissan maxima will not start. the key light on the dashboard came on. i had it towed to a nissan dealer only to be told it was a steering locks issue that cost me $1400 to fix. i was also told this is happening often with these cars. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was towed to the dealer, who stated that the ignition switch would need to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 62,285. updated 5/27/14*cn
Arrived at work on 9 feb 2014, car was working perfectly fine. when it was time to go home, car would not start and a red blinking light with a keylock appeared on dashboard, an attempt was also made with additional key to no success. after researching problem online, it is a well known problem with the automatic steering wheel lock mechanism where it just stops working for no apparent reason. it was recalled on all 2009 nissan maxima and altimas, mine is a 2010 manufactured in sept 2009 and the part number is the same as the 2009 nissan maxima model. car was towed to nearby nissan dealer where they stated my vin number did not show up as a potential candidate for the 2009 issue extended warranty. i paid $1272 for the repair bill where it is clearly a factory defect and have had zero luck with nissan customer affairs. they simply denied my request stating that there is no known problem with 2010 and needed more people to come forward. i continued my quest online to search other drivers who had similar issues and have found an entire forum dedicated to this same problem with everyone having the same outcome and having to pay out of pocket expenses for a well documented issue with this model. when car was at nissan, the option was pay $1200 to fix the issue or leave the car there, there was no other option given or provided as an alternative. *tr
Same as everyone else with the electronic steering column lock malfunctioning on a 3 and 1/2 year old car. this is absolutely ridiculous that a part that should last the life of the car fails so often and even more ridiculous that nissan is not extending the warranty or recalling it for the 2010 models. not to mention that the part is on back-order and who knows how long i am going to have to come out of packet for a rental and oh by the way waiting to pay $1300 plus to get this fixed. this is so upsetting... nissan should stand by their products and recognize the fact that their design for that part obviously did not work. nissan should also do right by their customers and take care of this issue. *tr
I have a 2010 nissan maxima sv and all was well until one morning i dropped off my son at school on a frigid 5 degree morning and tried to restart the car. the push start wouldn't work and i was forced to call a tow truck to take the car to the dealer. after evaluation, the part is the steering column lock which was defective. the same part that in the 2009 maxima and early 2010 was defective and provided extended repair warranty by nissan. it only got worse, nissan's replacement part for this has been on a national backorder since last month. after having to rent a car, pay for a tow, and now i wait endlessly for a part to fix a car that cant even be started, i was told by nissan that the part will not be covered for my car under the extended warranty. i was called each to update me on the potential ship date of the part, only the next week to be called again to tell me it maybe another few weeks. this is shame on nissan, at least toyota and honda will recall and fix a known problem. how could this not be a safety issue when the your car can leave you stranded in dangerous temperatures without any prior notice. *tr
Steering wheel locked and car will not start. battery works fine, intelligent keys work fine, windows will not roll up. i had to get it towed to the dealership and they could not tell the reason of its malfunction since it wont start. they ran their tests and consulted that it is the steering wheel locking unit. i was told that it would cost 750 to replace. they also told me to call 1800 nissan 1 and file a complaint. i then had it towed (paying out of pocket this time) to my house until i can pay for the part and have it fixed. it is ridiculous that nissan has not recalled or even extended warranty for other year models, or at the least make some kind of contribution towards the cost of their own manufacturing mistakes. instead, they assume that this same issue will not happen to other models. yet with researching, there are a plethora of customers going through the exact same issue with the exact same part and getting screwed. so much for customer service, they surely will not have much customers if they continue to leave this issue hanging dry. i will assure that i will not recommend others to purchase nissan vehicles. *tr
Went to work park the car with no problems, came out of work car would not start. thought it was the batteries in the remote due to the yellow light with the intelligent key on the dash, and then remember i just replaced the battery.the doors would unlock and lock with no problems, the brake petal would not go in. then thought it was the battery hood up a charger and it read it was on 70% charged, called the dealer they told me to have it towed in. the dealer called me the next day and told me it was the steering column, when i asked them why would it do this the only answer they had for me was this has been a problem with this year make and model. with the towing and the diagnostic check and the part with labor it's costing me over 1,000 dollars, the standard warranty does not cover any of this, all out of pocket. i just got rid of a 2008 gl 450 mercedes benz, because of having problems with it, i have a 4 year old visually disabled child that i am constantly traveling long distances to medical appointments so this is absolutely unacceptable to me. i always have loved nissan and this is my 4th nissan and was planning on purchasing a pathfinder in the falltime. when i purchased this car i stood by the dependability of the name, and i'm very disappointed. *tr
After leaving work to drive home, car would not start, yellow key symbol was on dashboard. key fob still worked to lock and unlock doors. car battery was fine, headlights and brake lights still worked. checked manual and it indicated steering lock malfunction. had to have the car towed to nearest dealership. after waiting 4 days for the part to come in, i had to pay over $800 to have the part replaced. very disappointed in nissan not covering this part because of the many others who have reported the exact same issue in the 2010 maxima -- even when it is a known and covered part in the 2009 model. *tr
Electronic steering column lock malfunctioned on me, this is a issue for the 2009 maxima (recall) which the 2010 also has same part and same malfunction and still does not have recall,i paid over a $1000 for this part which i really cant afford. *tr
Total failure of the electronic steering lock mechanism. this is a known defect and has not been addressed by nissan at this time. *tr
Went to grocery store with 2 kids (3yrs/2yrs old) came out and car wouldn't start. yellow key light & red key light was lite on dash. the car would open and close with key fob but car still wouldn't start neither did it recognize the key fob when placed into slot. had to get it towed to repair shop to later find out a steering lock module had gone bad. read reviews online about different year models recalled for same part #487009n00b but no recall issued for 2010 maximas yet several people are having the same issue. repair shop and i can not get part listed above because its on national backorder was told i have to pay upfront for part $500 in order to be placed on a waiting list and part is ordered then would have to wait anywhere from 40 to 60 days and still not guaranteed. called nissan about issue and they can not do anything until the part is ordered. called around myself to find part and very difficult. if this part was an issue & recalled previously why did they continue to use it? and no alternate part has been made to replace existing part. im getting the raw end of the stick handed to me. 1st to pay out of pocket with no guarantee of the part 2nd to have to pay to have car towed 3rd for the part being on national backorder. i dont expect a car with 52,000 miles to give me issues like this & not be covered being that's its a known problem. im very frustrated at this point. i have to make alternate arrangements to get to work. this needs to looked into asap! *tr
Yesterday i went into a store, came out to find out my electronic steering lock went up without warning. its a widespread issue and is happening to 1000s of people. i been told nissan is fully aware of the issue, but is only going to take care of the 2009 models. i don't understand how a major company such as nissan would know about this and not take care of everyone having this issue. it's not a driver error, it's a factory error and nissan should take full responsibility. the dealership i had it towed to says it's 900 dollars to fix and the part is on back order and they aren't sure when it would even come in. what am i supposed to do here? i don't have 900 dollars. this is my only means of transportation and i could be out of my vehicle for month's. i have been a maxima lover since i can remember. i've had 3 maximas. it's sad to say i will never purchase another nissan again. *tr
The vehicle would not start or move due to the malfunctioned electronics steering column lock control assembly. car had to be towed to the dealer. the part was on back-order due to the fact that many nissan 2009 and 2010 models having this same exact issue. had to wait for five days to get it repaired, and no loaner car was provided. the repair cost was over $800. the vehicle is less than three years old and has only 45000 miles on it. this seems to be a known issue with many altimas, maximas, and 370zs... nissan is aware of the issue but extended warranty on electronic steering column lock (escl) only for 2009 altimas and maximas. this is definitely a design flow on the part of nissan and as such should be covered by extended warranty or recall for 2010 models as well. *tr
Steering wheel is locked and needs to be replaced. as per threads on internet this is an ongoing issue. some nissans have been called for a recall but not this model. *tr
The vehicle would not start or move due to steering lock assembly. needed to be towed to dealer to be fixed. this should not happen to a three year old vehicle with 63000 miles on it this assembly should last the life time of the car. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the steering lock had failed. the vehicle was being repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 48,734. updated 02/11/2014 *bf
Today when i into my car and the car wouldn't start. i noticed the yellow "key" indicator is on, and the intelligent key will only lock and unlock the doors. i tried to start the car by placing the intelligent key in the manual start port, but the push button ignition stays ("reads") in the locked position, and the lcd shows an image that appears to be telling me to pull the key out of the port.the steering wheel itself is not locked, however. i can actually move it back and forth, but the brake pedal will not press very far down. after goggeling several threads came up about other people who have a 09-10 maxima have the same issues but nissan is doing nothing about it. said to say it sounds like they know this was going to happen but they don't care about the life of their consumers. im a single mother of 2 and im so hurt about the lack of quality nissan is making. *tr
Steering lock failed causing me to be stranded. car would not start, but lights and door locks worked fine. had to have the car towed to dealer and repaired. this is a known issue with nissan. they refund 2009 maxima owners but refuse to refund the 2010 even though it's the same part. *tr
There was absolutely no activation of the ignition system. after following all trouble shooting advice in the car's manual, i towed the car to dealer where they flagged an issue with the steering lock control unit (part# 487009n00b) and it needed to be replaced. this is all part of the vehicle anti-theft immobilizer system. the cost to replace this unit was $703.43. i feel this is a serious safety flaw in the 2010 nissan maxima. 1. this was a fully functioning car (except for anti-theft circuit glitch) that left my pregnant wife stranded in freezing temps in an empty school parking lot late in the evening. 2. nissan promotes how safe, reliable and economical their cars are, but the anti-theft system can disable the vehicle leaving driver stranded with only one option, which is, to be towed to a dealer because of ant-theft system glitches. 3. the car, being economical, should not require such an expensive repair because of an anti-theft device circuit malfunction. 4. there are several conditions that can occur that will result in the nissan maxima becoming immobilized stranding drivers. i am stating only one. this is particularly dangerous especially to female drivers. 5. i feel that nissan should come up with an override code or device that will allow a driver to escape from potentially dangerous situations that were created by nissan's vehicle immobilizer system. especially when the car is fully functional except for an anti-theft immobilizing circuit falsely telling that the vehicle is not ready to start when it is. i believe this is a serious safety flaw in their vehicle security system. *tr
I bought a 2010 nissan maxima 2 months ago. i drove it to work this particular day and everything seemed fine but when i tried to leave to go out for lunch, my car wouldn't start. i thought maybe it was the battery, but all lights worked perfectly and horn was still blowing. called three nissan dealerships in my area to get advice on what the problem may be, they all suggested that i may need a new battery in the fob. the fob was still working to unlock and lock the car so obviously this wasn't the problem. still i tried for hours to get the car started and was not able to. after being stranded for hours, i had leave my car. the next day, i had to get it towed to the dealership, where they told me this was a common problem (yet they didn't suggest it when i called). the electrical steering control unit had gone out or malfunctioned. they had the replacement part in stock and had my car repaired the same day, which cost me $815.52. after researching the problem i found that this was a common problem and an extended warranty was actually issued for the 2009 altima's for the same exact problem. i called nissan and they were happy to open a case for me and forward it to the corporate office to see if i could get reimbursed since this is a common and known problem. a representative from nissan called me back the following day and informed me that they are not issuing a extended warranty or issuing refunds for the problem. if this is a known problem why hasn't it been recalled and why won't nissan take responsibility for the problem? i think that this should be investigated because there was no warning in my case and many other complaints i have read. what if the same thing happens to the "new" part? i'll be stranded again, need towing again, and have to pay for a known, uncorrected problem again. *tr
I parked my car and went inside my inlaws with my 2 year old and 3 week old. when i went to leave my i-key warning light was on. the key opened the doors but the brake was locked and the vehicle wouldn't turn on. after looking online and checking the batteries in the key fobs i discovered this was a problem with the escl (electronic steering control lock). this is a known issue for nissans produced in 2009. nissan actually extended the 2009 models warranty for this part. my vehicle was produced in 2009 but is a 2010 model and not covered by the extended warranty. the repair for this is about $800 and should be covered under warranty. nissan is ignoring this issue in 2010 models which is unacceptable. had i been anywhere else this issue could have been much worse with me and my two kids stranded. *tr
Went to start my 2010 nissan maxima this morning for work and it would not start. the yellow key light indicator was lit on the dash, brake was hard to press. the car would not change from "lock" mode to "acc" or "on" position. the car would not start, doors would unlock with the fob but the car would do nothing else. reading the manual, i was able to tell what the indicator light meant. while waiting for the tow truck to arrive i searched the result and was shocked to see all the complaints on the same malfunction and how this has not been labeled as a recall due to the high volume of complaints. basically the steering wheel control lock will not disengage leaving you stranded. there has been a recall on the 2009 altima and maxima but not the 2010 which uses the same part. from what i have read the repair cost run around $800-$1000. waiting now for the nissan dealership to call me back. *tr
Stopped at grocery store, went in for around 5 minutes, came back out and car wouldn't start. the key fob would lock and unlock doors, head lights would come on but when pressing start button, nothing. paid $50 to have it towed to nearest nissan dealership and it sat until monday. after the dealership looked at it, they have notified me that it is the electronic steering control lock module. labor and part would be $653.58. this is extremely common in the altimas and nissan even extended the warranty on this part only and are currently covering costs for this part to be replaced in altimas. it's a shame to pay this much for a vehicle and can't even get it to run due to nissan's faulty parts. and why would nissan cover the part on an altima but not on a maxima even though it is the same exact part? *tr
Car would not start, bad electronic steering control lock. recall on the altimas and z cars but not maximas with same problem. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 nissan maxima. the contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the key warning light illuminated. the contact mentioned the failure recurred on three occasions. on the third occasion, the vehicle failed to start. the vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering lock unit needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 50,600. *tr
Purchased vehicle november 2012 everything work fine parked car went to bed woke up next day car would not start, intelligent key open and lock doors, horn honks good, key symbol on dash showing steady, push button start symbol states lock, bought new car battery, new intelligent key battery still wont start. called dealer, service tech states known problem as steeling mechanism locked. had to pay to tow vehicle to dealer. end of story cost 857.00 to fix plus 200.00 for the tow and nissan wont assist in any kind of way. dealer tech says i have 1 year warranty on work but this can happen again at any time. i find this to make the vehicle unreliable in all kinds of ways even life threatening. after doing some research this is a very highly common issue which nissan is well aware of. my family and i own many nissan vehicles and after this we as family will no longer purchase nissan vehicles. i don't understand how there isn't a recall or extended warranty on this issue. *tr
After parking the car, i left the car parked approximately 1 hour. the car would not crank, completely locked up. there was no warning prior to at all. as you can see this car only has 38,000 miles, not many at all. i question what would have happened if i were driving?? i searched the internet and see there are numerous complaints concerning this part on the 2009 and 2010 maxima and altima's. it also states the problem has been fixed with the 2011 up. in the meantime nissan is making a fortune off their mistake. my cost, a tow bill and almost $800 service bill. i hope you can research the problem to see if it could possibly be a recalled item, as well as a safety issue. thank you *tr
My car was parked briefly while i went into a store to buy groceries..upon returning to my vehicle, i depressed the brake and proceeded to turn on the vehicle with the push button start. a yellow "key" symbol flashed in the dashboard and the car would not turn...i tried multiple attempts in trying to turn on the vehicle but the vehicle would not start...the car had to be towed to the dealership and my service advisor called me to let me know how much the repairs would be...she called me later on and told me that the steering wheel lock unit had to be replaced and would cost me $878.62...i find this to be highly unacceptable as this vehicle is only 4 years old and i am disappointed that i had to spend over 800 dollars to get this issue fixed....this is apparently a known issue and nissan needs to refund my money and issue a recall. *tr
Electronic steering column lock failure of my 2010 nissan maxima. the car would not start and i was unable to drive it. this is a known problem for the 2009 maxima and altima and is now happening in the 2010 maxima, however nissan refuses to extend the warranty to the faulty 2010 models as well. *tr
What we are experiencing with our 2010 nissan maxima very closely aligns with the symptoms of the recall campaign issued in september 2009 for the 2010 maxima. nissan has been notified, however, they insist that my vin number is not a part of this former campaign. i struggle to believe this as it's just too ironic that everything aligns with the former. we experience 3 problems with the suspension and steering. 1.) at minimal speed mainly at initial acceleration, when turning slowly, and when braking at slow speeds you feel a jolt in the steering column and can hear a thud or clunk in the front passenger side. 2.) when the car reaches approximately 60 mph, the steering column bounces erratically and 3.) both at low speeds and high speeds the car pulls/veers to the right. this issue has been going on since i purchased the vehicle in 2013 and continues to occur. i have brought the car into a nissan-authorized dealer and they say nothing is wrong. i have brought the car into the hyundai-authorized dealer where i bought the car from and they say nothing is wrong. i have brought the car to 4 additional, independent mechanics/technicians and they also cannot get to the "root" of the problem without having the car for an unrealistic amount of time for diagnosis. i have already had to purchase a lifetime alignment and balancing package from a local repair shop as well as i had purchased new wheels and tires thinking that was the issue. regardless of what i do or where i take it, the issues continue. i am very concerned and cannot drive at ease knowling there is something wrong with the steering and suspension. i also have a 4 year old child whose safety i am concerned with when she drives in our maxima with us. nissan didn't seem to care about my concerns, they simply told me my vin doesn't align with the former campaign and then sent me on my way. someone, anyone, please help
The car would not start. a light suggesting the battery in the key was dead came on. i replaced the battery of the key and the car still wouldn't start. others have suggested it is a steering wheel lock issue that is happening on other nissans manufactured around the same time. i was stranded. *tr
I was at the store went in came out car wouldn't start had to call tow truck nissan said steering column was locked and if part is not covered under warranty the part will cost $800 i haven't had this car six months . this is a maxima 2010. *tr
My car won't start because the steering control lock will not disengage thus making the car inoperable. even with a new key fob, the car does not recognize this and will not change from "lock" mode to "acc" or "on" position. basically, my car thinks i'm a thief. i have researched this and numerous people have had this issue with 2009 and 2010 nissans that have a push start with this steering control lock. i called nissan to discuss the issue and see if they would extend my warranty but they declined and forced me to make a claim after getting the car towed and serviced which could be anywhere from $700-1000. i am very skeptical about getting any money back from them and am interested in taking legal action should they not take care of this matter as it is a manufacturer malfunction and has nothing to do with wear and tear of vehicle. which, btw, the vehicle is in great shape and has had regular maintenance checks so makes this even more frustrating. *js
I came out to my car and the steering was locked. i was unable to start my car which left me stranded in a parking deck. after spending $140 to have it towed to the dealer because they told me they could not help me unless it was brought in, they said that it was the steering lock control unit. they also said that the part was back order until sometime in february, but they didn't know when, and that it would cost $700+. after doing some research, i have discovered that this is a known issue for maximas 2009+, 370z, and gt-r models that all use the same faulty part. they are charging over $500 for the part and 4 hours of labor when it actually takes only 15 min to repair. this part needs to be recalled by nissan. my service guy said that i am the 3rd person to have this issue just this week. absolutely ridiculous!!! *tr
My vehicle would not start after i stopped at the store. my key light on the dash was on so i referred to the manual and it indicated a malfunction in the steering lock solenoid. after researching this i notice thousands of nissan owners have had this same problem causing the vehicle to be stranded where ever you shut it off at. then i had to get the vehicle towed where it cost me over $1000 to get it fixed. this should be a recall asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *tr
