We have classified the 465 complaints from 2005 Nissan Maxima about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I purchased my 2005 nissan maxima in 2008, in august 2009 my vehicle quit on the highway, since that time i've taken it to 3 mechanics including 2 nissan dealerships, they finally got my car running however it jerks violently while shifting from 1-3rd gears. recently i was almost in an accident because the vehicle revved then jerked almost causing me to hit another vehicle. i cannot believe all the same complaints and no recall. nissan should be ashamed! *tr
My 2005 maxima was violently jerking, stalling and hard shifting from 2nd to 3rd gears and vice versa. i kept telling nissan that something was wrong with my car but they would take may statement say they would get back when me and when they did they said they could not assist me in any way. i took my car to several mechanics spending 1000.00 of dollars and no one could figure out the problem. i took my car to a nissan dealership, after the got the car running because it had stopped on me on the highway coming home from work, the dealership said it jerks in 1st and 2nd gear, i asked if that could be fixed they said they'd try, after another 2000.00 more i brought it home and again the same problem, i brought my car back to nissan and they gave me an estimated list of repairs that needed to be made for approximately $6,000 which included $4185 to replace the transmission. how is it that within a matter of weeks and only 600 miles that it goes from sensors should fix the problem to you need a new transmission, new starter, i then contacted 1-800-nissan1 which was a waste of time they supposedly reviewed my complaint and told me that unfortunately they won't be paying for any of the repairs. what a piece of junk car and i cannot believe a recall hasn't been made on this car! *tr
The transmission on this car does not want to go into gear between 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. then if it does it jerks really hard and sounds like its going to fall out. then there's times it slips. when you put the car into reverse you have to hold your foot on the brake really hard or the car will jump backwards. as soon as the car warms up it does this. i'm afraid to drive the car out of town in fear the transmission will completely stop. there are plenty of websites with people complaints of the same issue. its not an isolated thing. i have not been able to fix the problem because of financial reasons. the car is only four years old. i bought it used and haven't even had it a year yet. i called nissan and they said there was no known issue of this problem. i read that other people were told the same thing when they called. there's no way a transmission should have problems after only four years. *tr
I have a 2005 nissan maxima and i've been having problems with the transmission. there is a severe jerking from the transmission when going into to gear or when shifting gears while driving. *tr
This a complaint about the transmission of the 2005 nissan maxima. my maxima only has 60,000 miles on it, however it has began to jerk while changing gears, and to slip out of gear while it is on the road. this is very dangerous, particularly the slipping out of gear. i have not yet gotten into an accident or had my car stop on the road. however, i feel that it is only a matter of time. apparently this is a very widespread problem with the with the 2004 and 2005 nissan maximas. the problem first began to happen about every 3 days, but now it happens about every other day. especially when the car is going from 2nd to 3rd gear. i have had the transmission fluid checked, and was told that my fluid level was perfectly fine. the shop recommended that i take my car to a transmission specialist, which i have not yet done. they also mentioned to me that the transmissions on the 2004 and 2005 maximas are known to be defective, and usually go bad at about 60,000 or 70,000 miles. i believe that the transmissions on the 2004 and 2005 nissan maximas are defective and need to be recalled. *tr
Tl. contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. current mileage was 65,000 and failure mileage was unknown. contact stated while driving at 40mph the vehicle will slow down with braking and becomes very stiff. then the vehicle will accelerate without warning. the dealer stated the vehicle needs a new transmission. contact feels this is a safety issue because as the vehicle slows down another vehicle can crash into the back of the vehicle or the contacts vehicle can crash into the back of another vehicle because it accelerates without warning. jo
My transmission skips and runs rough from 1st and 2nd gear... the nissan maxima is 2005 and has 127,000 miles. this started when the car was at 119,000 now it's getting worse. *tr
Clutch pedal on a 2005 nissan maxima goes to the floor. it will return by "popping" the pedal; bouncing it off of my foot. i had the same problem with a 2002 nissan altima. *tr
Transmission jerky and slipping despite being well maintained. stalled in middle of intersection and other times making unsafe. transmission replaced. 50,000 miles later, same exact problem. transmission must be replaced. unsafe car to drive. must be defective design. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. the contact stated that the vehicle would jerk violently when shifting from first to second gear or when shifting from park to drive. in addition, the vehicle would stall intermittently. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who replaced the transmission. the current mileage was 102,000 and the failure mileage was 75,000.
I have a 2005 nissan maxima, and this car is having shifting problems, i only have 90k on my maxima and it jerks when coming to a stop and accelerating from 1st gear to 2nd gear which sometimes me and my passengers get whiplash by it. i replaced the transmission fluid and the car is still slipping into gear. some days the car works good, but most of the time the car has trouble with the shifting and is making me think less of nissan manufacturing. *tr
After the car runs for about 15 minutes the transmission slips or comes out of gear at 5-45 mph. when you pull out in traffic and are trying to get up to speed its like it goes from in gear to neutral with your foot on the gas. i have seen hundreds of complaints on 2005 nissan maxima with the same problem that i have that will get people killed god only knows how many already have!!! nissan is well aware of the problems and refused to cooperate with a recall on a poor product. please help all of the 2005 maxima owners. *tr
I am having problems with the transmission in my car. when i drive and put the car in drive it jerks really hard. when i am accelerating it drags like it doesn't want to go and then jerks and starts back up to speed. nissan said it is a transmission problem. my car was only 4 years old when i first noticed the problem and nissan would not fix it. i see tons of complaints about this very issue and they have defective transmissions and don't want to admit, but i think someone needs to make them accountable.. $4800 is not pocket change, and most people don't have that kind of money. they should fix this for free. *tr
After the dealer told me that my manual transmissions needed to be replaced at 60,000, and told me it wasn't under warranty, i went for a second opinion. a local transmission shop told me it wasn't may transmission but rather my clutch pedal bracket and that it was under warranty! i went to a second dealership and had it replaced under warranty. that lasted for about 20-30,000 miles when it started to feel as though i was moving a boulder while depressing my clutch. this past summer, when i was manually pulling the petal back from the floor, i had to replace my fly wheel and clutch because of the wear. my clutch bracket still needs to be replaced again! why is this such a widely known issue with the 2005 mt maxima and nothing has been done? *tr
I purchased a 2005 maxima which i love. recently it is having transmission problems. it starts to skip and jerk in 1st and 2nd gear. i was told transmission would cost 4000 to 6000 dollars which i cant afford. i have researched this problem and found i am not the only one with this problem there are thousands more. just type in and google transmission problems in a 2005 maxima and read all the complaints. obviously nissan needs to step up and correct this problem. some people can hardly pay there bills must less come up with the money to pay for a transmission problem that obviously is nissans fault. thanks. *tr
2005 nissan maxima transmission slipping. *tr
I own a 2005 nissan maxima, i had to have a new transmission put in my car. when i first took the car in to the nissan dealership here in memphis, tn, i was told by the service agent after test driving the vehicle that i was not having a transmission problem but that i needed motor mounts among other repairs which turned out to be quite expensive...about 3 days after having these repairs done, i took the car back in with the same complaint as before and was then told i need a transmission (this was my complaint when i took the car in, i complained about the transmission) and this would cost me $3,000+ in addition to the $2,000+ i had already spent. everybody that i know who owns the '05 maxima has had to replace the transmission or is at the point of complaining and questioning transmission issues. the dealer nor corporate is owning up to any problems with the transmissions in this particular vehicle. we would appreciate any help that you all can give to get nissan corporation to own up to this known defect....thanks. *tr
Vehicle was purchased with 69,000 miles and was in good condition, owned for eight months and driven lightly. transmission intermittently jerks when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and also from 2nd to 1st. occasionally revs when up shifting then shifts with a bang and jerk. when problems occur, the manu-matic mode displays 's' instead of what gear you're in like it is supposed to, and will not shift gears manually in this mode. vehicle was taken to dealership where it was purchased and they eventually replaced the transmission with a rebuilt transmission. rebuilt transmission lasted less than six months before exhibiting the same problems. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. the contact stated that when shifting into gear, the transmission knocked roughly. when driving, the gears would slip and the rpms would rev. the vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. the manufacturer had not been notified. the current mileage was 100,557. the failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 25 mph and decelerating, the transmission began to jerk violently from third to second gear. the failure occurred intermittently and became progressively worse. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they were unable to duplicate the problem and advised the transmission operated normally. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 45,000. updated 12/19/11
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. while driving at any speed, the contact noticed that the vehicle would vibrate, violently jerk, and stall sporadically. the failure began two years ago and the dealer made seven attempts to duplicate the failure but to no avail. the manufacturer offered the contact $800 toward repairs yet the failure persisted. the current mileage was 108,696 and the failure mileage was 60,000.
For the past several months, i have been experiencing the same transmission problems that just about every other 2004-2005 nissan maxima owner has experienced. mine is a maxima se with 5 speed auto (with manual shift mode). once the car warms up, the transmission shifts very hard and rough from 1st to 2nd gear. it also downshifts hard from 3rd to 2nd gear. at this point, if i put the car in park or reverse, and then back into drive, there's about a 3-5 second delay, then it makes a banging noise as it kicks into gear. the transmission problems get worse: when shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gears it slips into neutral (causing rpm's to freely shoot up nearly to the redline) and then jerks and slams back into gear very rough & hard. this really affects the cars performance. the transmission problems go from worse to more worse: eventually somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear, i'll hear and feel the transmission make a banging sound and lock up...no up or down shifting. this causes the "service engine soon" light to light up. at this point, the car accelerates very slowly from a stop since it's locked in gear and at highway speeds, the rpm's are very high. when switching the transmission to manual mode, the gear indicator always stays at "5". i have to turn the car off for a few seconds and re-start the car to get the transmission to shift again, but unless it's had several hours to cool off, the same problems start again immediately in sequence. this is obviously a manufacturer's defect and how nissan is not being held responsible for this blows my mind and is completely unacceptable for a $30,000+ car that's under 5 years old!!! *tr
Wow! this is crazy! i have the same problem> i have a 2005 nissan maxima and lately about a month ago when i put my car in drive it jerks big time. this is on and off. i took it to the nissan dealer for them to say it was my motor mounts and they needed to be replaced. well after hearing all these complaints it looks like i will just waste money to get these mounts replaced. my car has 81,000 miles on it and its been driven lightly and babied> i don't understand why they will not have a recall on this. noone should have to pay money for an issue that's obviously messing people over! *tr
Tl* the contact owns 2005 nissan maxima. the contact stated the transmission failed on for the second time. the contact had the transmission replaced in march of 2009 per the dealers recommendation yet the failure was recurring. the transmission would become stuck when shifting from second to third gear. the contact stated that the vehicle would also stall intermittently accompanied with a hard jerking sensation. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or repairs. the vin was unavailable. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 130,000.
After about 65,000 miles i began to have transmission problems. the car would jerk hard when shifting from 1st to 2nd and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd. i took the car to the dealer and they said the motor mounts was the problem. i had the motor mounts replaced but about a month later the car had the same symptoms. i have kept up on the maintenance. i have researched nissan complaints and there are many people with the same problem. nissan should check into this transmission problem and possible issue a recall for these transmissions. *tr
I am having transmission problems with my 2005 nissan maxima se. i took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong with it because it would mess up after it warmed up. it would jerk in down shifting and when i accelerated. first the guy said it might be my motor mounts. they advised me that i needed a transmission flush because we needed to start somewhere. i got that done and my problem continued. then he said that i needed my fuel induction done. he said that he put it on the machine and there where no error codes. then after i complained again he wanted to charge me to run a diagnostic after he already said he put it on the machine and didn't find anything wrong. also my service engine soon indicator light never came on. i have had 3 nissan maximas but nissan is not working with me. i bought my car in aug of 2008 and didn't purchase a warranty. i thought nissans were great cars but as stated in the forums lots of people are having this problem right after the warranty expires and nissan needs to look into this if they want to keep loyal customers like myself. *tr
Transmission defect/failure. *tr
I currently own a 2005 nissan maxima sl automatic transmission i bought it used at about 80,000km and its now at 103,000km. since i bought it i have been more then disappointed and now furious with nissan. from purchase date which was august 2008 until now april 2009 i have been experiencing the car jerking from gear 1 to 2 and 2 down to 1. it went from a slight jerk and slip of the gears to a jerk so hard that it broke the engine mounts. i brought it in and got the engine mounts fixed and also had them do a diagnostics. i went to 4 different dealerships and 2 mechanics and no one knew what was wrong. nissan kept telling me to get a transmission flush which i did twice and still did not solve the problem. i also got the timing belt replaced as well as got the vehicle checked out by a nissan transmission specialist. not to mention every diagnostic test is $100. this car is not safe for me and my family. the intense jerking during acceleration and breaking is not only unsafe for us, but for others on the road. the most recent incident happened coming off the highway late one night when i was slowing down on the off ramp and the jerk was so severe that it had given myself and my passenger whip lash and caused us to spin out. after all the maintenance, parts replaced and i?m still experiencing the same problem means that nissan is not doing their job to get this rectified. it?s costing me too much time and money. i have to take time off work every time to get these things done and the same problems are recurring and now i don?t know what else to do. i recently read some reviews and i noticed that this is a popular problem within 2004-2005 nissan maxima?s but yet there has been no recalls and nothing has been done to compensate the consumer. i need something done asap because as of right now i have no other choice but to drive this faulty vehicle, unsure if i will make it to work or home at night. *tr
I have had my 2005 nissan maxima for almost 3 years. purchased it from used car dealership. the first year i had it, i had to get a transmission. i purchased a transmission for about 3000, and still having the same problem as before. the car is really nice except for the transmission. i found out i am not the only one complaining. i had taken it to several transmission places for them to look at it, but they all say these cars have that problem, and they think it should be a recall on these vehicle for that reason. please help. i do not want to purchase another car, but i have to have transportation. *tr
Nissan has a huge transmission problem. it seems to be a serious and common problem with 2005 nissan maxima cars! my maxima was jerking between 1st 2nd and 3rd gears, rpms reaching 4 during shifting, hard jerks in down shifting; a 5 sec pause when putting the car into reverse or drive, i also heard grinding noise when shifting. this occurred on a daily bases.i had to pay $3,500 for a rebuilt trans. nissan headquarters refuse to; look at my car...at that time i only had 95,000 miles nissan said my warranty expired. nissan told me i wasn't a true customer because i wasn't getting my oil changed by them on a regular basis. (i paid my car off in full in 2005 how devoted is that) nissan needs to take responsiblity for this faulty transmission. i will never ever buy another nissan again. on top of all that my abs system is completely gone it's too much to repair. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while shifting gears, there would be a five second delay before the vehicle actually shifted into the selected gear. the contact also stated that the vehicle would violently jerk while driving 25 to 30 mph. there would also be an increase in the engine rpms. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they were unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer had not been notified. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was approximately 93,000.
I have a 2005 nissan maxima that is having transmission problems. i purchased the car with 97,000 miles a year ago. since then i have been having problems with hard shifts- shifting from 1st to 2nd gear as well as a hard banging sound when it finds the right gear. i have changed the transmission and several other parts, only to encounter the same problems. there seems to be a big problem with the transmission in these cars. research on-line showed that a lot of people are having the same problem. *tr
We bought a 2005 nissan maxima brand new. last year 2009 the transmission began to slip and the air conditioner went out. the dealership said the air would be $1400 so when the tranny was a problem i knew not to go to the dealership. the car would jerk and slam into gear. i had my 2 children in the car and it completely stopped in the middle of traffic. it had to be towed to a local transmission place and was told i would need a new transmission for $3000. the car has been babied and should not have any issues. it is garaged kept and all maintenance done. the car was less than 4 years old when all these problems started. after seeing all the complaints i believe nissan should recall and refund this particular transmission. my mechanic cannot get any help from nissan and it still has issues. my children and i could have been killed the way the car lost all gears in the middle of traffic. i did not have enough time to pull over. there are more complaints about the 2005 nissan maxima transmission than toyota and look what they are doing. do people have to die for nissan to take responsibility? i want to be included in any and all class action lawsuits that pertain to this issue. i still own money on this lemon. *tr
2005 maxima had less than 77,000 miles on it and the transmission needed to be replaced. it is not covered under warranty which is only 60,000 miles. nissan is well aware of the problem with the 05 maxima but has refused to issue a recall. *tr
Transmission failure with 2005 nissan maxima. at about 60,000 miles i noticed my transmission slipping from 1st and 2nd gears. then it got progressively worse and started jerking when coming to a stop. i took it to nissan dealer and they said that i needed a new transmission and that it would cost about $4000. after replacing the transmission the problem is gone and car is back to normal. i did research on the internet and found hundreds of cases with the exact same problem. how can i get my complaint heard and reconciled because this is truly a nissan defect and not just ordinary wear and tear on the car. i thought initially i just had bad luck. this was not the case. *tr
Timing chain problem with 2005 nissan maxima. after having my transmission replaced (different complaint), the dealer told me that there was a known problem with the timing chain guides breaking and that my timing chain and corresponding parts needed to be replaced for $1600. i thought this was a problem because my car is not old and should not need this repair. i did research on the internet and found hundreds of cases with the same defect in nissan maxima's. i would like my complaint heard and a possible recall done if possible. this is clearly a nissan defect and problem and not normal wear and tear on the car. *tr
I bought my nissan maxima at 58,000 miles from the nissan dealership at gwinnett place nissan, duluth,ga. at about 89,000 miles my transmission started jerking when switching from gears 1,2, and 3. even when increasing speed or downshifting. i took it to gwinnett place nissan and they claimed it was an engine mount problem. i specified that it could be the transmission but they said it was definitely the engine mounts, so i got them replaced for $1500, after the fix i still feel jerking and now its getting worse. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. the contact stated that when shifting from first to second gear, the vehicle would jerk. the vehicle would also jerk when accelerating to higher speeds. the vehicle had not been inspected by a dealer or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 75,000. the vin was unavailable.
My car has a shifting problem. it shifts very hard between 1 and 2 gear. it will also rev to high rpm when going down hills. this has been going on for years. last year i took it to a nissan mechanic and had the motor mounts replaced and that helped some, but the car still shifts very hard and bucks like a bronco. i only have 123000 miles on it and it should not be acting like this. i've read many complaints on this year model and all the issues people are having with their transmissions. i thought maybe i just got a lemon, but it seems there was a lot of lemons in this model and year car. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. the contact was driving approximately 40 mph on normal road conditions. pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal, followed by an unintended lunge and forceful acceleration. the failure occurred whenever the vehicle was shifting in the first, second and third gears. the driver pulled over to the side of the road and turned the engine off. the vehicle restarted and resumed normal operation. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician recommended replacement of the transmission. the vehicle has not been repaired at this time. the failure mileage was 61,000. updated 03/04/10. *lj the consumer also complained that when accelerating, the transmission would jerk. the dealer found internal transmission failure. the transmission fluid was burned. also the front and rear engine mounts were broken. the consumer had an accident due to the shifting problems with the transmission. 08/11/10. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 45 mph, the front end of the vehicle began to shake and jerk violently. the failure occurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on two different times for the identical failure. the technician informed that the transmission would need to be replaced. the failure continued and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the transmission valve body was being replaced. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 20 mph the rpms increased excessively and the vehicle began to decelerate. once the vehicle responded and accelerated it lunged forward. the vehicle was taken to the dealer three times for diagnostic testing. the technicians were unable to diagnose the failure and suggested the contact have the transmission flushed. the transmission was flushed but the failure continued. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
I live in washington state. i bought my 2005 maxima se in feb 24 2007 with 48,000 miles on it. when it reach 98,000 miles (mostly highway miles), my automatic transmission began displaying shifting problems. 1.from park and/or reverse to drive it had a 5 second delay to shift into gear, and when it did it shifted hard. 2.transmission slipped out of gear during slow and go driving causing the engine to rev at high rpm?s and then slamming into gear. 3.very hard shifts between 1st and 2nd gear when shifting up and down at speeds of 15 to 25 mph. 4.once it slipped out of gear, and shut my engine down. during slow and go driving i could feel the transmission begin to shift at15 mph, and get a hard shift at about 20 and 25 mph. it shifted hard back and forth between high and low gears. i also, experienced lag time, and high rpm?s before it slammed into gears when shifting. every transmission place i went to wanted $3500 to $4000 to replace it. as an alternative, i bought a used automatic transmission with 62,000 miles in dec 15 2008, and had it installed for $2000.00. after 150,000 miles (mostly highway miles) on the replacement transmission i began to experience identical problems as described above. i?ve had the cam sensors, solenoids, and fluids replaced and it still response the same way. i find it odd of 2 different transmissions that acting the same way. also, ever since i got this car i have to replace the headlights ever year. not good for a car that cost $40,000 new from a company that used to have a good reputation. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 50-55 mph he heard a banging noise coming from the transmission. he pulled over to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. he then restarted the vehicle and the noise continued. he drove the vehicle to the dealer and was advised that the transmission needed replacing. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 89,000.
No events leading up to the failure. one day (72k miles) the transmission just started jerking horribly between first and second gear during acceleration and deceleration. the transmission fluid was changed as advised but did not fix the problem. now i am being told by local shops and dealers that i will have to replace the transmission with costs up to $4000!!! *tr
My 2005 nissan maxima started showing signs of what may be serious transmission problems ,mainly after vehicle is warmed up transmission has a harsh shift ,and hard jerking that would start in 1st gear going into 2nd gear ,this happened around 80,000 miles .i took it to the dealership but for whatever reason they couldn't find anything wrong with the car ,at currently 148,000 miles car still has exact the same issue ..car does runs great on highway only .i've seen i am not the only one having this type of issue maxima is a nice car but having to deal with transmission problems not so ..specially since it cost from 3,000 to 4,000 brand new hopefully there's some type of recall so they can helps us out here and get the problem solved. *tr
Transmission started jerking in the freeway jumping speed and coming down on speed when i took it to the dealership to get a check he told me the transmission went off which broke my transmission mounts and coil car had all maintenance done regularly and never was mentioned about the issue or engine light never went on
Transmission problem w/ 2005 nissan maxima. have done all recommended service and been to several repair shops who can not find a problem. the transmission jerks into 2nd and 3rd gear when accelerating and stopping in such a manner that shakes all passengers. i have found that many owners are experiencing the same problem w/ no answers from the manufacturer. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. whenever the contact would drive the vehicle at any speed she noticed that the vehicle would jerk and vibrate while down shifting or shifting from the first and second gear. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the current mileage was 95000 and the failure mileage was 60000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. the contact stated while attempting to shift into second or third gear, the gear engaged with violent force, and sometimes the gear will not shift into drive. the failure occurred when the vehicle was driven for over an hour. the vehicle was taken to the local transmission mechanic to be diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 36,000 and the current mileage was 97,000 miles.
