Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2006 Nissan Frontier

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan frontier. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle shifted out of gear independently. the vehicle decelerated and stalled. during the failure, the check engine soon light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the radiator coolant tank leaked fluid onto the transmission. the radiator and transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

Radiator coolant is leaking into the transmission fluid and causing it to overheat.

My vehicles contain a defective radiator cooler tank that ruptures and forces coolant into the transmission through the cooler lines. when the coolant mixes with transmission fluid it creates a frothy liquid that eats valves, errodes seals and causes corrosion. it's toxic, irreversible and killed my 5-speed automatic transmission on my nissan frontier 2006. now i have to pay $3,700.00 for the repair of the transmission. why nissan did not repair all the cars? they knew that most of the car will brake pass 100,000 miles. like mine. also when you buy a car from the dealer, they do not tel you this problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan frontier. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle stalled in the middle of the highway due to transmission failure. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the coolant system needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 96,000.

The vehicle has 86,700 miles, i always took care of it, changing oil at 3000 mile intervals, never towed with it, etc., etc., while driving the trans slipped out of gear, luckily i was able to pull over and nobody was in back of me, when i got it to the dealer, they said the timing chain and guides needed replacement plus the radiator leaked and the trans cooler contaminated the transmission and they both had to be replaced and it cost me near $5000.00 for total repairs.

The internal portion of the transmission cooler/warmer inside the radiator failed and contaminated the transmission and cause it to fail. a known problem in this vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan frontier. while performing an oil change with a mechanic, it was noticed that the cooling system was contaminated from the transmission oil. in addition, the cooling system was fractured. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 83,000.

My transmission began slipping slightly and when the fluid was checked, we noticed that there was radiator fluid getting sucked into the transmission. shortly after that was noticed, the transmission completely stopped shifting and left me stranded on the side of the road. it has 100,000+ miles on it so the warranty will do nothing for me and neither will the class action lawsuit that i've found some information on therefore, it has been sitting in my driveway for over a year because i cannot afford to have it fixed at this point.

Coolant mixing in transmission. no warning, truck just quite working.

Bought the truck used at a nissan dealership. had under 50k miles. 2 months ago check engine light came on and heat was not working. had it looked at several times spending money each time but they could not find problem. last month truck started running rough. found out this week it needs a new transmission/radiator due to a problem that nissan has known about for years. there was a class action lawsuit about the problem. they said my truck is too old to qualify for help. according to sites i see we do qualify and i need some help. it overheated today and broke down on highway and is not drivable. i need someone to help me with this.

Known quality defect of nissan trucks in which radiator fluid leaks into transmission eventually causing complete failure of transmission and vehicle operation. this failure can happen at anytime and can effect all nissan trucks made during this timeframe

I was informed that there was a cracked radiator in my truck that was leaking fluids into my transmission. this was on sunday 9/27/15. the employee of my local dealership informed me about this. the following i was informed by the service department that i would need to replace the radiator and transmission. i was told that this was an "ongoing" issue going on with vehicles that match my make and model.

I bought the truck and less than a week later i noticed a weird rumbling noise at around 35-50 mph and 1-2 rpms. one time while i was by myself in the mountains scouting for an elk hunting trip, the truck would not go into reverse. this could have been very bad as i was isolated otherwise deep in utah mountains in the fall. took the truck in and found it was transmission failure just like everyone else had written about on the internet. extended warranty replaced transmission for $100.00. 6 months later, i was still nervous about the issue and before a big trip i did some more research. people with similar problems were pointing at the radiator and warned to check it for transmission oil contamination. checked it last night and the radiator is full of transmission oil. truck is currently in the shop.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan frontier. while driving at approximately 60 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the rpms increased, but the vehicle failed to accelerate without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission was filled with fluid and needed to be repaired. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 127,000.

Transmission failure due to a defective radiator. warning signs of failure. truck stalls out while driving at normal speeds. the day it went out i was crossing a bridge and came hair of getting rear ended. by the time i got close to home it was just slipping so bad i had to park it. nissan will not take any responsibility for this and thousands of people are stuck with a $5000.00 repair bill which the average person like me can't afford. this problem should be a full blown recall on all affected vehicles.

I went to kerry nissan where i bought the truck when i got the notice about the cross contamination of the transmission fluid and antifreeze due to a defect in the radiator. my truck had 88,000 miles on it at that time. i was told by the dealer not to worry because it was rare for this problem to happen.i asked about preventive measures and was told there was none. i asked about replacing the radiator. i was told that wouldn't help because it would be the same radiator. now at 108,000 miles my transmission is shot because it's full of antifreeze. the truck has been garage kept, maintained, and looks like new. the dealer has quoted $5,236.00 to repair. i contacted nissan they told me i had to take it to the dealer who is charging me $95.00 to tell me what i already know. nissan knowing at that time they weren't going to do anything to help me. how do they settle a class action suit for 80,000 miles when all the incidents happen closer to 100,000? there should have been a total recall on all the vehicles affected to replace the radiator with a redesigned one. this is so wrong. i was planning on driving this truck another 5 years.

The transmission on my truck suddenly went out with no warning during my morning commute in heavy traffic on the 202 loop in phoenix. shifting to a different gear had the same effect as stepping on the gas, which was that the engine revved with no increase or decrease in speed. i had to coast across 4 lanes of fast moving traffic. it was an incredibly dangerous situation. i am told by the nissan dealership that transmission fluid mixed with coolant and that it was a catastrophic failure. i have received no notices of any kind from nissan and was shocked to learn that this is a known, commonly occurring defect and that the defect manifests instantaneously and without warning most of the time. nissan should be held accountable for the defective system and for not notifying me that i should have the dealer fix it before they put my life and property and that of every person around me at risk. updated 09/15/15*lj *cn

Recently my 2006 nissan frontier transmission started to make a grinding noise at speeds when shifting to a lower gear. i checked the computer about possible problems; that is when i found out about the transmission lines failing inside of the radiator. the water was leaking into my transmission. nissan and the dealership that i was getting my truck serviced knew of the problem for many years. when i asked the service adviser about the problem, he told me my frontier had 7,000 over 100,000 miles and that was the cutoff for nissan to help. what made me mad was that i had my 90,000 mile service done at the dealership on 01/28/2014 , paid $523.38 and nothing was told to me so i could take action to save my transmission!!! i should had been told of the defective transmission lines before it ruined my trans. now i am out $3,228.78 for a rebuilt transmission. they knew i had the frontier, why didn't they tell me of the defective transmission lines... i don't understand...

Radiator has a crack internally and is leaking fluid in to the transmission. cost is $3000 to fix.

Car would not start, towed to mechanic. he reported transmission needs to be replaced due to contamination. to my family this is a safety issue due to the fact that we live in a very rural area that sees little traffic nor does it have good cell phone reception.

I bought a 2006 nissan truck from gary mathew nissan last year,i was told it was check out and in good running shape i am a 65 year old recent window no one said nothing about a defective transmission cooler that could cause the transmission to fail or that it was factory caused problem that could occur. last week i was driving it keep showing 4x4 and service engine soon in dash it would lose power to point it would not move until it sit a few minutes .i carried it next day the said it was a lose cable, went home it did same thing several times and lost power on road in traffic,to point it didn't want to move i went to dealer right then. well they came out with a cost paper to fix it $ 5300.00 i just sit there couldn't figure how a truck i just got could of tore up i take care of my stuff ,including my cars check fluids all i can do, well then a car sales man said maybe better to trade, after hours of this and me not able to trade couldn't afford the 5300 much less in dept 18,000 for another used truck with 90,000 miles on it, i told them to fix it, i'd try borrow money,i was also told may get help from nissan but looked at their extended warranty only up to 80,000 miles on the transmission thing. we have had nissan or datsuns too that had over 200,000 miles on them and did fine right up to being replaced, that's why i got my truck, nissan knew about this problem and knew it would happen, so i am hoping nissan will help me pay for fixing their mess up. i like nissans thru years my husband and i had lots of them now i am alone and look what someone else's mistake is costing me i have to middle of week to come up with this money for someone else's mistake.. step up nissan fix your mistake . [xxx] in tn> ya i put my name this is the truth i need help information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

When i got out of college the first thing i wanted to do was to buy my dream car. i had been looking into getting a truck and i was debating between my number one choice a nissan frontier or 2nd choice toyota tacoma. i knew the tacoma was probably more reliable in terms of minor parts yet i just loved the design of the frontier and therefore i bought one in 2006 brand new. ever since it has been my preferred and only way of transportation. i knew that maintaining it was imperative therefore when it came to an oil change, change of suspension trusts, transmission service, change of spark plugs; it was all done at the proper time. yet my truck started giving me issues 4 months ago when it would shake or shimmer on road and freeway. did several tire rotations, did suspension change, yet the issue still persisted. it all came down to a screeching halt when i was going up to sequoia national park for a hike with friends. my frontier all of a sudden started loosing power and then the gears would just not change. eventually my 'engine service soon' appeared and was forced to stop our trip. had to hire a tow truck to bring down the truck and upon scanning i got a p1759 code. upon researching i come to find out this is a common issue with not only this line of truck but also xterra and titan brands. you cannot believe my disappointment. if it were something simple i wouldn't mind but transmission?!? really?!? because of somebodies' mistake when it came to the engineering of the truck?!? and to find out nissan is just ignoring the issue. total disappointment and frustration! now i have to wait for our sweet government to take action since this is a perfect example of a major corporation irresponsibility and ultimately.... greed. be warned all frontier drivers, your time will come.

Radiator cracked and leaked coolant into my transmission, killing the transmission.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan frontier. while idling or coming to stop, the vehicle would shutter. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a routine oil change and diagnostic testing. the technician determined that there was a leak in the radiator causing the coolant to seep in to the transmission. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 92,000.

In february 2015 i started having transmission shutter/shake at 35 to 40 mph. transmission continued to get worse with the transmission banging into gear at approx 65 mph. took vehicle to my mechanic who informed me of the ongoing cracked radiator leaking water into transmission problem. within 4 weeks of first problem, transmission failed completely and i was forced to have it replaced at a cost of $4535.47.

I was driving along at highway speeds when suddenly my transmission completely failed with no warning. thankfully it completely disengaged and did not damage any other systems. when taking it to the dealer for repairs, i was told that there was a crack in the coolant system and transmission fluid and coolant mixed together, thus ruining the transmission. after some research, i learned that this was a known issue and that nissan did very little in the way of recalls/informing their customers of this potentially dangerous issue. *tr

I actually had a problem with my 2006 nissan frontier stalling when driving down the road and found out it was because of ecm relay so i called nissan dealer and found out there was a recall on the relay. made a appointment to get it fixed and had them see why i had a hesitation when taking off. long story short i show back up to get my truck and service advisor tells me i need a new transmission and radiator because of coolant and transmission fluid being mixed.the service adviser was very short with me and sure didn't want to explain anything about the problem,he just wanted me to order $5302.87 worth parts to fix it.i don't know about the rest of you but i don't have that kind of money sitting around to buy a new transmission and radiator .this should be something that nissan recalls apparently it's a big problem. *tr

I was driving on the interstate, and then all the sudden the rpms went up and i had no control with the gas pedal, like it was in neutral, i pulled over to the shoulder put it in park, put it back in drive and it started to go again, as soon as i hit 4th gear it did it again. took it to the transmission shop and the told me it was the radiator leaking into the transmission because of a cracked line. see this has been happening frequently with this model, why no warning or recall? *tr

Recently purchased a used 2006 nissan frontier from a dealer and after a couple days of driving the check engine light came on, shifted real hard and about caused an accident. after further investigation, we found that there was coolant in the transmission and vis versa. estimated cost of repair is 5-7 thousand dollars. *tr

Took vehicle to local nissan dealership for noise that appeared to be coming from transmission with a slight rowing sound when transmission shifted between 40 mph and 45 mph. shop manager informed me truck needed a new timing chain and fuel tank sending unit. after making repairs to the timing chain which the shop manager specifically indicated that the problem was with the timing chain, my truck still has the same exact problem. these repairs were made at my expense. now the dealership want me to pay for additional repairs that may not be the problem when they specifically assured me that the timing chain was the problem. i feel that the real problem with my vehicle is the radiator and transmission, which is a nation-wide problem with nissan frontier truck transmission and other nissan vehicles. nissan is responsible for a re-call on these vehicle. (will seek nissan corp. & bbb assist to resolve this issue). *tr

Transmission blew due to radiator fluid leaking into transmission. known problem by nissan, yet no recall issued and deadline to be part of class action lawsuit has passed. *tr

While driving, the truck stalled on a hill due to transmission failure. truck began rolling backwards into traffic. transmission failure was caused by radiator coolant leaking into transmission. this is a known issue by nissan, and a safety concern. *tr

While in drive, vehicle does not want to shift into higher gear and took excessively long to gain speed. when this vehicle did eventually shift gears, it shifted extremely hard as if something was damaged . after diagnosed by mechanic, i was told that the radiator had leaked water and antifreeze into the transmission and both radiator and transmission needed to be replaced. i just purchased this truck two months prior. according to the mechanic, this is a problem nissan has had and known about for several years and has not fixed or made known. i am told this will be an expensive fix, one that i can not afford anytime soon. this is a safety hazard because this vehicle could not speed up and i almost got rear ended several times. please initiate a formal investigation of this vehicle and the above mentioned problem. this is clearly a manufacturer defect and should be corrected by nissan. *tr

My vehicle shuddered and felt to slip out of gear while driving! because of this known issue of leaking coolant causes transmission failure. i bought this frontier with very low miles and was never told of this potential issue from the dealership. it should be a safety recall as it prevents the vehicle from accelerating and if you are driving can cause an accident. i am now reading that nissan owners have no idea this is happening until too late. once the coolant is mixed with the transmission fluid this lethal combination kills the valves, seals and torque converter -- rendering your entire transmission useless. i read that this issue is currently contained to the 2005?2010 model years. i have a 2006 with 64k miles! it is only time until this issue causes multiple accidents since this issue happens while cars are driving. please push nissan for a recall. i should not have to pay for a known engineering / manufacturing defect. *tr

Issue started as a no start condition. upon investigation, the truck had a blown fuse and continuously blew fuses. the mechanic determined the fault was with the tpcm contained internally in the transmission caused by the radiator leaking antifreeze into the transmission via the transmission cooler, thus causing transmission failure. vver upon contacting nissan customer service, they immediately requested that it be taken to the dealership for determination of failure that i was responsible for the expense. there was no further assistance offered and they stated they would escalate the issue once the dealer diagnosed the problem. let it be known, nissan has issued a recall on this vehicle due to the exact problem noted here. my concerns are 1.) why should i encounter a second cost for diagnosis (especially since this is a known issue from nissan) and 2.) what is my liability and reimbursement once determined the cause of the failure since my mileage exceeds their allocated amount. prior recalls state that >90,000 miles was $3000 deductible whereas my mechanic could repair the vehicle for approximately $3000. at 117,000 miles, average mileage yearly is less than 15,000 / year. i requested that the regional service adviser contact me (via social network) and telephone but have no contact with nissan as of this writing. this is clearly a manufacturers defective part which failed prematurely, *tr

The automatic transmission radiator cracked and coolant leaked into the transmission rendering it useless. *tr

When i was driving on i-4 in orlando fl my transmission suddenly failed from coolant leaking into it , i almost got hit by a tractor trailer when trying to get to the break down lane, come to find out this problem has been known by nissan for quite some time and they didn't recall, i guess it will take someone getting killed before they are forced to step up and address this know defect, not only is it costly for the fix it's dangerous. *tr

Transmission was shifting erratic had it towed to a transmission shop. they found that the valve body in the transmission was rusted from a previous radiator failure allowing the transmission fluid and anti-freeze to mix together, see odi number:10641659. had to replace the valve body and overhaul the transmission. *tr

Contacted a mechanic because my truck would shake at speeds at or above 50 mph. it was also starting to shift very hard. the mechanic checked it out and told me that there was a very common problem with the radiator failing and causing coolant and water to get into the transmission... which isnt good at all for it. radiator and transmission are shot and need to be replaced. he tells me that nissan has had this problem for some time now which was news to me. you would think nissan would let owners know about a problem so severe and common. now i'm on the hook for $4000 thanks to nissan and it very unprofessionalism. *tr

Hello fellow "nissaners"! well, was so happy with this truck and my wife as well, because that was her first idea to purchase this good-looking vehicle. our son was driving our frontier to school and back home a few years ago, then to a local university. everybody were so happy! then my son mentioned that truck is behaving very strange: heavy shaking/jumping at highway speeds around 60-65 mph. i didn't believed it till i draw myself. true! a few times i felt like heavy hit from behind, looks like someone ended up to truck's rear side! then i searched web and after some exploration realized the problem is radiator coolant contaminates with automatic transmission fluid! how?! i opened radiator cup and saw milky substance on it and transmission fluid was not a clear pink color, it was more like pinkish milk shake color! that was it!!! after almost $32k were paid in full and happy family for a few years, now a huge frustration and helplessness!!! dealers "offer a help" only if we pay full price for transmission and radiator to change - about $6k. i have not so much money!!! i heard nissan refusing a recall on this huge issue. mr. nissan or whoever you are, please do something about it, are you sleeping well every night?! we don't!!! are you (mr. nissan) afraid to go bankrupt of this big problem - i've bet you are! but think of those people who are behind the wheels of your trucks and suvs and on this cars one day might get stuck in middle of fast highway because of this failure...!!! i really hope somebody can hear us out there. please do something!!! please!!! other frontiers, pathfinders, xterras - please write your complaints!!! don't seat and wait when something will happen, or till something happens!!! thank you!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan frontier. while driving approximately 40 mph, the transmission gears stopped shifting and the engine revved and made a loud noise. the contact drive the vehicle in first gear to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the contact did not notify the manufacturer. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan frontier. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 mph, the vehicle began jerking and the transmission failed. the contact also stated that vehicle would not accelerate properly and began to over heat as the check engine warning light was illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the mechanic stated that there was a cracked atf line that ran through the engine coolant chamber, in the radiator, which caused contamination. as a result, the radiator needed to be replaced and the transmission needed to be rebuilt. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 99,000.

Radiator coolant failure leaked into transmission causing it to fail... *tr

I am yet another victim of the transmission/radiator problem along with hundreds, possibly thousands of other customers. defective radiator allowed coolant to mix with transmission which is now outrageously expensive to repair. *tr

on my way to work, 4/13/2014, sunday a.m. sudden loss of power (no forward motion) i had to immediately pull over to the slow lane and stopped. there was no other option on alameda blvd. all lanes on both sides of the blvd. had to tow to carson nissan, they inspected the transmission and said it was bad due to the radiator...... i have noticed other complaints and i am wondering if this site is worthwhile i truly hope so, please and thank you..... *js

I bought my 2006 nissan frontier in for regular maintenance, during the dealer inspection they noticed a noise coming from the engine. the noise is a whining sound and i thought nothing of the noise until they stated that its the timing chain and that it needs to be replaced. from the research i did the timing chain is supposed to be a non-serviceable item and should last the entire life of the vehicle. upon further investigation i found that this was a known defect that nissan motor corp is aware of. nissan motor corp had issued tsb's for this item and they have even been part of a class action lawsuit. why were nissan owners not made aware of this issue? now i am faced with a $1,500 repair decision. from what i have also read if this chain breaks it can have serious safety issues for the driver, why has nissan not set up a recall for this issue. *tr

We bought this nissan new in 2006 -great little truck. but recently the engine would stall and all the lights on the dash came on. took it to our mechanic he said it was a tran code took it to the nissan dealership and they said the coolant had gotten into the trans or vise versa (a lot to take in),so i needed a new transmission and radiator. i found this issue on your website for a recall but my vehicle was within the years of the recall but it has over 100,000 it has130 so the dealership said there was nothing they could do to help with the $5500 bill they just quoted me. is there any help out there for me on this issue??? please. *tr

Cross contamination of the engine coolant and transmission fluid causing a transmission failure. *tr

Radiator coolant leaked into the transmission, destroying the transmission. transmission needed to be replaced, costing over $4500. *tr

I had just parked my truck in my driveway(truck was off,key was removed) when i removed two bags from the back seat area(the seat was where it all ways is) i walked in the kitchen area put the bags on the table,as i was walking back to my truck i seen the truck roll back about a foot or 2 then stop.there wasn't any snow or ice on my driveway,no black ice either the temp around 45,sun shining. i did see my truck roll this is the god's truth. if i would have under the truckfor any reason i my not be here telling you this. i do not us my parking break i never us it,the trans, locks when you put it in park.the time of day was 1pm this the first i have seen this. *tr
