Problems with 2013 Nissan Altima AIR BAGS

On average, the 2013 Nissan Altima starts to “feel” problems with the AIR BAGS and its various aspects after 27 278 miles.

Recently reported AIR BAGS problems on 2013 Nissan Altima

Whenever my wife sits in the passenger seat up front the "air bag off" indicator lights up. she weighs approximately 105 pounds. i have contacted nissan dealers, nissan regional representative and nissan usa in franklin, tn about the problem of not having air bag protection for my wife when i am driving and they all say the vehicle is performing as designed. i believe this is a safety hazard and nissan has no fix for it. my complaints to them fall on deaf ears. the dealer has stated that they have seen this before in other nissan vehicles and it is a lightweight person problem. it seems to me that just because my wife is small that does not eliminate her from the need for protection. what about other small people? i believe nissan is avoiding a recall at the expense of people like us. can the nhtsa do something about this problem? for your information, my complaint to nissan is case number is [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

My wife's vehicle was stopped on i-95 about a car length behind a minivan that had also stopped for debris in the road, a toyota pickup truck hit the rear of her car at speeds in excess of 60mph pushing her car into the minivan in front of her at a speed of at least 30mph, the srs airbag in her car failed to deploy and quite possibly the seatbelt as well. my wife struck her head on the vehicle's left side roof support beam and suffered a concussion, whiplash and other lesser degree injuries as a result. it is my understanding nissan has had issues with srs failures in 2013 altimas. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the air bag sensor illuminated intermittently. the dealer cleared the computer code, but the failure recurred. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 13v069000 (air bags) and 14v138000 (air bags, electrical system). the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 26,000.

Although my 2013 nissan altima had the passenger side airbag fixed at the dealership after a voluntary recall, the issue still persists. the passenger side of the vehicle does not detect someone sitting in the seat most of the time so the air bag light comes on notifying the driver that the air bag is off. *tr

Other driver ran a red light hitting the side of my car doing over 50 mph and the side impact air bags did not deploy. *tr

I received a notice of recall for the passenger side air bag. i scheduled the prescribed fix with the dealer, kline autoworld, maplewood, mn, and the dealership told me they fixed the recall problem, 07/03/2014. then, on or about 07/16/2014 the passenger air bag warning off light came on with my spouse in the passenger seat. i contacted the dealer twice regarding this warning light. so far the dealership has not gotten back to me. *js the consumer stated on seven occasions since the recall fix, the air bag light illuminated when an adult passenger was sitting in the seat. updated 06/10/15. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the front passenger seat was occupied but the passenger side air bag off warning light illuminated. the contact mentioned that the seat was being occupied by a 180 pound passenger. the vehicle was previously taken to a dealer where the front passenger air bag system was replaced. the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who indicated that the system was operating as normal and the failure was undetermined. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 20,000.....updated 12/30/15 *bf

Adult was seating in passenger seat and no airbag light came on. never had this happen until after i took it to the dealer for the recall repair. *tr

I have had trouble with my cars " air bag off " warning light staying lit with a passenger in the seat ever since i bought the car new . it has been to the dealership to be " repaired " 4 times . each time it was not corrected . recently i brought the car in for this problem as part of the safety recall . despite this ,once again this past weekend the " airbag off " light comes on even though a passenger is in the seat . the light will come on randomly and then stay lit the whole time i am driving ... no matter how the passenger sits or moves in the seat it will not turn off until the car is turned completely off and then restarted . now the dealer says to bring the car in for the 5th time and they will see if there is an error code . ( in the past there has not been any error codes retained ) i feel this car is completely unsafe for my family until this problem can be fixed ... until then i never know if my airbags are truly working correctly ... and i don't want to have to find out after an accident that they weren't . my last nissan ! *tr

The occupant classification system (airbags) turn off when the passenger seat is occupied by person weighing 130+ pounds. this happens if car is idle, and at all speeds. car has been taken to the dealership to be serviced for the recall on 4 seperate occasions and dealer has acknowledged that they do not know what to do as they have tried multiple remedies and cannot fix it. they refuse doing anything else to do and say it is not their problem. the dealership is nissan of mckinney in texas. general manager is david kelly and service technician is matt johnson. i do not feel safe in the car as this is a serious safety hazard. there is a rebuttable presumption that a reasonable number of attempts have been undertaken to conform a motor vehichle to the applicable express warranties. it has been subject to repair on 4 seperate occassions. the car has guards on the underside of the car that have fallen off on 3 seperate occasions and been fixed to no avail. the dealership acknowledges that they sold an extended maintance warranty to me and miss represented the product and did nothing to make amends until i inquired on several occasions. nissan of mckinney in texas sold the 2013 nissan altima with premium dunlop tires and charged a premium for the tires at the time of the sale. the orignial dunlop tires are bald an will not pass inspection, which was acknowledged by matt and general manager david kelly, at 19,000 miles. these tires have a 65,0000 manufacture warranty from dunlop/goodyear and the dealer will not make good or replace the tires as they are clearly faulty. the missrepresentation of the 2013 nissan altima has caused an extreme amount of undo stress and the dealership refuses to make any remedy at all. nissan of mckinney texas and their general manager have sold me a car that falls under the texas lemon law.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the passenger's seat did not acknowledge when a passenger was occupying the seat. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing but was unable to be diagnosed. the failure persisted. the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 14v138000 (air bags , electrical system) but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was unavailable.

Adult passenger sitting in the front passenger seat. airbag light indicating the air bags will not deploy goes on intermittently. had the latest recall fix applied several weeks ago but this problem was not fixed. been to the dealer 3 times for this problem. *tr

Several times the passenger seat / occupant detection system has failed to properly identify an adult occupant and has disabled the passenger airbag. this occurs with males and females ranging from 40th to 70th percentile in all genders. i have recorded videos of these incidents for record of their occurrence. the only resolution is to pull over, power car completely off and restart car. on restart the car recognized the occupant and enabled the passenger airbag. the date of incident is of the first occurrence. this happened several more times with the most recent being may 2015 with approximately 29,000 miles on the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the front passenger airbag illuminated off when the seat was occupied. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that there was no failure with the airbag. the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v138000 (air bags, electrical system).the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 8,076. updated 9/4/14*cn the consumer stated the recall, did not rectify the problem. updated 09/18/14

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated while a passenger was sitting in the front seat the air bag light illuminated. the contact shut the vehicle off and restarted it and the air bag light shut off. the failure recurred within twenty minutes. the failure occurred on three occasions. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the dealer repaired the air bag sensor; however, the failure recurred. the failure mileage was 17,857. the current mileage was 18,200.

Several times the passenger seat / occupant detection system has failed to properly identify an adult occupant and has disabled the passenger air bag. dealer has serviced twice but issue persist. the only resolution is to pull over, power car completely off and restart car. on restart the car recognized the occupant and enabled the passenger airbag.this happened several more times with the most recent being april 2015. now i feel unsafe specially with my wife pregnant seating on the passenger side.

Brought my car in when i received the recall notice from nissan that the passenger side air bag had an issue due to a software glitch. after bringing the car in and having the software updated, a few days later, the light again came on while there was a passenger (myself, adult female about 130 lbs) in the passenger side seat (my husband was driving and noticed the light had come on). i reported it to the dealer where i had bought the car and had the recall repair made, they told me there were several other cars also reporting that the error continued even after having the software fix applied. they told me i'd have to bring the car in and they would try to duplicate the error and possibly replace a seat track, but would need to confirm with nissan on whether or not they could do this. i think it is ridiculous that if they know there is an issue and know the fix did not fix it, they need to proceed with additional steps in order to resolve this failure in the safety equipment. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v138000 (air bags , electrical system) but the air bag warning light remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the technician stated that the sensor would not acknowledge a person seated at the weight of 130 pounds or less. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 28,000 and the current mileage 28,500.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the front driver's air bag warning indicator illuminated and remained lit upon start-up. the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 16v911000 (air bags), but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to moses nissan (202 5th st, st albans, wv 25177, (304) 727-2921), but a fault code was unable to be retrieved. the dealer could not offer further assistance. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000. *tt

Tl * the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving approximately 65 mph, the contact noticed that the air bag safety features on the vehicle were disabled. the dealer was unable to repair the vehicle because an error code could not be determined. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 19,000.

The passenger side airbag "off" light will illuminate when a passenger around 130 lbs sits in the passenger seat. when this occurs (about half of the time), the light illuminates upon engine startup and the passenger is seated. the only way to get the light to turn off is to shut off the car and restart it with the passenger still in the seat. the passenger airbag "off" light does not illuminate when i start the car first, and then the passenger sits in the seat. i have also noticed the light illuminate when my 5 lb work bag is in the passenger seat and i take a sharp turn around a highway ramp (turning for about 10 seconds). this all occurs even after the car was re-programed under recall 14v138000

My passenger air bag light keeps lighting up stating that it is "off". i drive my 72 yr old mother around who weighs 152 lbs. my issue besides the fact if we get into an accident she is not protected but she has a heart defibulator. this needs to be fixed. no one is doing anything about this. are they waiting to be just like gmc? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the passenger's side seat belt light intermittently illuminated when a passenger was in the seat and secured. the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 14v138000 (air bags , electrical system), however the failure was recurring. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 8,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the air bag and seat belt warning sensors illuminated. the dealer cleared the codes, but the failures recurred. the contact mentioned that the vehicle was repaired according to nhtsa campaign number: 14v138000 (air bags, electrical system); however, the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer numerous times, but the technician was unable to remedy the failure. in addition, the contact heard a loud noise while driving 25 mph and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed back to the dealer. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 8,919.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated while making a right turn at approximately 15 mph, another vehicle crashed into the left side of the vehicle. the air bags failed to deploy. a police report was not filed. the contact sustained neck and shoulder injuries. the vehicle was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign id number: 14v138000 (air bags). the approximate failure mileage was not available. drrk

I have experienced several incidents where the airbag off light was on even though an adult passenger was riding in the passenger seat with their seat belt fastened. *js i was made aware of the passenger air bag recall affecting many 2013 nissan altimas. i brought my vehicle to the nissan dealership just one week ago for routine maintenance and i inquired about the recall. they performed the recall which i believe involved a software update. however even though the recall update was performed, today just 5 days after receiving the update, once again the airbag light was on with an adult sized passenger in the car's front passenger seat. i had to stop, turn off the car and restart in order to correct the situation.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the air bag deactivated warning light illuminated intermittently while the seat was occupied. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the technician was unable to find a failure. no repairs were made to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 11,000. updated 01/20/15*lj also, the key fob failed. it did not recognize the key id. the consumer was unable to unlock the door. on several occasions, the vehicle would not start. updated 02/231/5.*jb updated 10/7/2015*js

The light continued to come on and off when someone sat in the passenger side that airbag off. i had it check and it was reset in 4/2014. it has indicated it was off random times when there was a passenger in the seat. i brought the car in for the recall of front hood latch and had the airbag sensor checked. i was told it was the sensor and it needed to be replaced and it would cost $700. for part and labor. i do not feel if a sensor is not working that is not from a wear and tear issue. it a defected part and it shouldn't have anything to do with the warranty. especially being the car is only a 2013. i have tried several times to go through nissan. they have continue to tell me there is nothing they can do it's out of warranty. i tried explaining how this has been going on since i got the car and i'm not so sure they are hearing what i'm telling them. they say the same thing as if they are reading a script. there is terrible customer service. this is a defect and should be replaced from the dealership. do you have any suggestions where i need to go from here?

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the front passenger seat air bag deactivated intermittently, even when the seat was occupied. the warning indicator was illuminated. the failure occurred several times. the dealer was unable to diagnose the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was unknown.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the engine rpms increased excessively without warning. also, the contact stated that the air bag warning light would illuminate intermittently. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for a diagnostic. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure and current mileage was 15,500.

I am sending this email to notify you a possible severe safety risk caused by the failure of airbag passenger detection sensor. recently i found that the seat belt warning light is malfunctioning in case a heavy bag with 22 lb weight is placed in the right side passenger seat. if heavy bag is placed in the right front seat, the seat pressure sensor detects the heavy bag as a passenger is seated and the car safety system turns on the seatbelt warning indicator on driver's monitor screen. this is the detection algorism failure for seatbelt detection system. so, to turn off seat belt warning red light, i fastened the seatbelt of rightside front seat even though there was no passenger in the seat. then the seat belt warning light (red) is turned off. but even though seat belt warning light is turned off, this failure also makes the front passenger airbag to stop functioning, as the system turns on "front passenger airbag status indicator" with orange color light. and this means the airbag is not functioning in case of accident if the heavy bag is placed in the front right side seat of the car. this detection algorism failure may lead a severe injury in case of accident. so please refer and test with above condition, and fix this problem by recommending or taking action to upgrade the front passenger detection algorism and related software, to stop the malfunctioning of front airbag system. if you see this notice, please give me your reply for confirmation of receiving this message. solving and notifying this problem is very important because the insurance company also matters this faults and the insurance company also recognizes and makes record history that other passenger was seated in the pls give me your email, that i may send file attachment for detailed explanation for this complaint. *tr

We purchased a nissan altima last august. every time i sit in the passenger seat, it says that the passenger air bag is not operative. the owner's manual states that it will not function if a child or small adult occupies the seat. i weigh between 111 and 114 pounds. i called nissan's consumer affairs office to determine the weight that would trigger the air bag's functionality. i was trying to ascertain whether the air bag was broken or whether i was considered a "small adult" for this purpose. we received a voice mail from [xxx], stating that she was assisting mark in this matter and that my case number was 14039699. she further stated that she could not answer my question because "the information was proprietary to the manufacturer of the component" and thus "not available to the public." as a result, there is no way for me to determine whether the air bag is malfunctioning. while i understand that the deployment of an air bag can be harmful to lightweight passengers, its failure to function for someone that exceeds an appropriate weight limit is dangerous and potentially fatal. i therefore ask you to assist me in getting that information from nissan. i find it incredible that nissan is telling me that this key safety information isn't available to their customers. thank you for your help. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

On 3/18/14 i was stopped at a traffic light that was red and was at the bottom of a ramp located in interstate 225 colorado going south. when the light turned green i preceded to cross the intersection/ passed the south lanes who were at a red light and all cars were stopped. when i preceded to cross in front of the north bound lane a car suddenly went through a red light and smashed into the front of my car turning the car around in a 180 degrees or more. the impact to the front of the car, fenders and hood was completely damaged from the full impact of the other car. the radiator and air conditioner were leaking and damaged and my vehicle needed to be towed from the scene after the police report was completed. the air bags did not inflate and i incurred multiple bruising from neck to lower back and mid thigh as documented by my doctor. i do not consider this nissan altima 2013 to be a safe car to drive and i drive small children to school which is even more worrisome. the air bags in this nissan altima 2013 are defective. *tr

Passenger airbag-off light comes on with passengers between 90 and 120 lb -- well above child weight. reported to two separate dealers, who claim they found no problems and is not covered by any recalls or service campaigns. yet this is a very common complain on this model (see forum link below). this seems to be just one crash away from a fatality. here is the forum link (or go there and search for 2013 altima airbag light) where many people are reporting this problem and not acknowledged by nissan corporate or dealers: http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/2013-nissan-altima-discussion-2-5-3-5/365978-has-anyone-had-their-passenger-airbag-warning-light-fixed-7.html. *tr

Front passenger air bag remain active (on) although there is no adult passenger sitting in the front seat.

Passenger air bag illuminates, yellow status light "off", when engine started with full size adults buckled into front seats. went one mile, stopped the car and shut off engine. engine restarted and pass airbag "off" light came on again. shut off eng. and restarted again. light turned off after restart and has not illuminated. this intermittent problem has been reported many times before. *tr

My wife and i were driving i noticed the passenger airbag light saying "passenger airbag off".. my wife is about 150 lbs and the airbag seat sensor should not have an issue with a person of this weight. i worked on seat sensor design for almost two years and i know that most are programs to not deploy for people under 80lbs. this has happened three times so far (mid jan, end of feb, and early march 2014). i have pulled over each time, turned the car on and off and it re-set the error two of the three times. the one time it did not, i drove an additional 10 miles then retried the car off/on and it re-set so the airbag does work. now i'm driving around checking for the light so i know the airbag will deploy in case of an accident when i have a passenger in my front seat. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the front passenger side air bag sensor light would intermittently illuminate indicating that the air bag system was not activated although the passenger was seated in the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the failure was caused by the occupant classification system software. the software was updated but the failure continued to intermittently occur. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 9,000.

I have had the 2013 nissan altima in for service 5 times for the occupancy sensor in the front passenger seat. the air bag is off per the lighted indicator on occasion when a passenger rides in the front passenger seat. i have contacted nhtsa for the specs on the sensor. nissan submits these specs to the nhtsa for compliance regulations. the specs state that the passenger must be over 108 pounds for the air bag to be activated. in the case of all the front riding passengers in my 2013 nissan altima, this requirement was well exceeded (150+ lbs). please review the follow link for facts. http://www.ecfr.gov/cgibin/textidxc=ecfr&sid=4e1f9e91060ea3f99991e14608a174c1&rgn=div8&view=text&node=49:6.1.2.3.37.2.7.43&idno=49 **please note that a 5th percentile human female weighs about 102 lbs and a 5th percentile female test dummie weighs 108 lbs. i am not confident that our local dealership can or will repair the vehicle after 5 attemps (3 sensors and 2 sensors "resets"). i have opened a case with nissan and will be submitting the lemon law documentation. i am seeking full replacement of the vehicle with a new 2013/2014 nissan altima or full amount paid (car, down payment, trade in, tax, tag and tile). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 55 mph, the air bag warning light illuminated on the front passenger's side and deactivated. the failure recurred multiple times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the ocs software needed to be replaced and repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v138000 (air bags). the remedy failed to repair the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of failure. the failure mileage was 100.

Since i purchased this vehicle in june i have noticed that the air bag light will go on for the passenger seat when someone over 100 lbs is sitting there. i took it in today and they tested the sensor and reset it. they said that everything was normal and if it did it again to turn off the car and have the passenger sit properly on the seat and not half way. it is intermittent and happens only occasionally. i know that the passengers are sitting fully on the seat and worry that the air bag is not going to work when it is supposed to. i see several postings on youtube about this same problem and customers complaining that their dealers can't find the problem and to bring it in when the light is on. i also noticed a recall for occupant sensors on this model and wonder if this problem is related. *tr

The passenger front airbag does not detect adults sitting in the seat and therefore may not deploy in a crash. my car does not fit under the previous recall. nissan corporate says it is aware of the problem. but cannot provide a date of a software patch. as a solution, i was told to pull the car over and restart it every time it happens. *tr

We have the same issue that many have complained about with the air bag light indicating that it is off because not enough weight is being distributed in the seat to register while driving. my wife is 140 lbs and it is constantly turning off and on. two nissan dealerships told my wife there was nothing they could do but that some women sit on the side of the seat and so they are not sitting correctly for it to register. so... i began sitting in the passenger seat (i'm 6'3 225 lbs) and it still does it. i love nissan cars and trucks but this is a ludicrous answer!! how can you sit in a seat of a car wrong!!!!

The vehicle was involve in the 2014 recall for the safety defect due to a computer program could misjudge the weight of the person in the front passenger seat and conclude that a child instead of an adult was sitting there. the local nissan dealer has tried at lest 5 time times to correct to no avail

My 18 year old son, weighing aprox. 135 lbs, 5'11", sitting in the passenger seat with his feet on the edge of the seat. i see the air bag indicator light go on. (indicating that the air bag is turned off.) this has happened at least 5 times. after 1st hearing about the recall for this same issue, i was expecting to receive a letter from nissan. didn't happen. even though my car is exhibiting the same defect that has been recalled, i have been told that there is not an issue... *tr

I have a vehicle with an intermittent passenger airbag circuit problem. it will illustrate the passenger air bag off light anytime from startup to 20 miles later. it has happened multiple times even after the recall was performed. nissan has now informed us to wait 30 seconds after starting before engaging the transmission or stop and turn the car off. i have never owned a car that required me to turn off the interstate to restart the car. nissan is now refusing to repair the car. *tr

Driving with a person in the front passenger seat, the passenger airbag light on the dash illuminated to indicate the airbag had turned off. it did this twice on the same day. the person sitting in the front passenger seat was 175 lbs, well big enough that the sensors should have detected. this appears, from numerous online forums, to be a common problem. prior to manufacture of my 2013 altima (06/2013) a recall was conducted for this very same problem. apparently, post recall, the problem still exists. many people could be killed or seriously injured as a result of this safety failure. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. when the vehicle was started, the passenger side air bag off warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the technician was unable to be duplicate the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure continued intermittently. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v244000 (air bags). the failure mileage was 100.

The front passenger air bag status light (passenger air bag off), illuminates intermittently with a full sized adult sitting in the right front passenger seat. nissan claims that my vehicle is not subject to the voluntary safety recall campaign id# pc214, dated april 2, 2013. the passenger airbag status lamp is located above the instrument panel center stack. this intermittent condition has occurred twice through the month of december 2013. the warning indicator will turn off and operate correctly after i turn off my running engine and restart. *tr

Bought this car new and have continual problem with passenger air bag light coming on saying the air bag is off when a passenger of more than 125 pounds is sitting in the seat. car has been to nissan service several times for this problem and they say there is no computer codes. i've documented this happening 9 times since july and i am very concerned about safety of my passengers. when i see the light, i stop the car, turn car off and back on and light goes out. one time the passenger moving around in the seat caused the light to go out. i do not have confidence the air bag will work if needed. nissan north america has just about washed their hands of trying to fix it and tell me the system is operating as designed. frustrated~! *tr
