Problems with 2013 Nissan Altima AIR BAGS

On average, the 2013 Nissan Altima starts to “feel” problems with the AIR BAGS and its various aspects after 27 278 miles.

Recently reported AIR BAGS problems on 2013 Nissan Altima

Passenger air bag sensor indicates air bag is disabled when seat is occupied by an adult. this happens when vehicle is both stationary and in motion. this happens off and on but has not shown up when at the dealership. last instance was today.

Passenger side airbag is off when a person is in the passenger seat at the start of the drive, then after about 10 miles the passenger airbag off lamp goes off. this vehicle had service for passenger airbag when new.

Takata recall. i am worried about my safety. did dealership take care of all of it during 07/2016 recall?

I recently had my car taken to the dealer for two recall items- passenger seat airbag indicator and hood latch replacement. afterwards, the airbag off indicator now is illuminated when passenger front seat is not occupied. on two occasions over the last week, while someone was in the front passenger seat the passenger airbag indicator started was extinguished, like i would expect, but after about 5-7 miles of driving the indicator illuminated, indicating that passenger airbag was off, while person was still in the seat. after an additional 35 miles or so of non-stop driving, i exited the freeway and came to a stop, at that point the passenger airbag indicator then went out. the fellow i carpool with has been in the passenger seat both times that this has occurred is very concerned and is considering not carpooling any longer. thank you *tr

After latest recall, air bag light is always on even when no one is in seat which goes against owner manual. disable light should only go out when a person a lower weight is sitting in the passenger seat per describe in owner manual. now the constant light is distracting and brighter than the navigation system at night. per the manual if the car is started and if some one at a lower weight sits in car after car is started then the car should be turn off then back on. i am stressing that the recall did not fix the problem but disables the air bag when not required to be disabled.

Takata recall. i took the vehicle to the local nissan dealer on 6/13/16, to address applicable recalls. they did the related work on the hood latch, and said there were no other recalls. the nissan service manager said the airbags are not a problem.

After the 2016 recall, to correct the faulty passenger air bag off condition, when a passenger not meeting the minimum airbag deployment requirements is seated the the passenger seat, the drivers "air bag off" warning indicator is now always illuminated when the passenger's seat is unoccupied. this condition leads to incorrect operation of the warning indicator which now displays this warning during a normal operating condition of the vehicle. under normal operating conditions when there is no passenger in the vehicle, the constant illumination of the warning light will over time be ignored because of its constant on condition. the operation of the this indicator makes about as much sense as having the "seat belt unfastened" warning light always illuminated for an unfastened seat belt for an unoccupied passenger seat.. the inappropriate and misleading operation of warning indication leads to the operator's disregard of the warning indicator's significance. over time, the driver will accept the on condition of this warning light as a normal operating indication and may lead the driver not recognizing the significance if this warning light remaining "on" in the event that a front seat passenger, meeting the air bag deployment criteria, occupies the seat. the operation of this warning light must be returned to its per-recall operation of only illuminating when the passenger seat is occupied by a passenger not meeting the criteria for air bag deployment. any other operation of this warning light yields erroneous misleading passenger safety information to the operator of the vehicle. this safety condition must be corrected.

I have had an issue with the passengers side airbag for 3 years now. you can have a 140 up to a 300 pound passenger in the seat and the air bag turns off. i have been jerked around by the dealer and nissan america. they can't get it to turn the light on.. i have it on videos not working.. they have re-flashed it several times or i was told they have.the car is not safe for a passenger to be in. per nissan yesterday 8/8/2016 a new recall is coming. this has been 3 years now and the car is now past the warranty period.. i am sure they will try to charge me now... would you put a loved one in that seat knowing the air bag may not work??? nissan was to call me again today 6/9/2016 and still has not happened.. time to replace all the sensors and the controllers...

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle's air bag seat warning indicator remained illuminated even when there was no occupant in the seat. the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 16v244000 (air bags). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 21,000.

I received two recall notices (airbag related and hood latch). i contacted the dealer as advised on the notice and was told that a recall specialist would have to call me me back to schedule. i did not hear from anyone for two weeks and then called the number listed on the notice for nissan national consumer affairs, as this was recommended if the dealer is unresponsive. the representative gave me a case number (22894092) and transferred me to my local dealer again. i was again told that i would be contacted by the service department to schedule this maintenance, but i have not heard back. it has been over one month since i initially called to schedule.

This is to report and complain about recalls on my 2013 nissan altima recall: 16v-029 i traveled to my local dealer [kline nissan, maplewood, mn] over a year ago for a similar recall fix to the hood latch'. my online record still shows it is needed (ntb16-011; external recall number: pc426) i did not receive notification of the above recall until months after the effective date. i went again for the above ref. recall and was told that they did not have the part in stock and it could be "quite some time" and would call me. it has been over two month and no contact. i just received a second mailing on this recall stating that i had not taken care of it. this is a frustrating and a time wasting process. recall: passenger a.b. (ntb16-052? r1609? not clear from the online description what this is) i now see that my passengers have been at risk of an inoperable air bag. i have not yet received notice this third recall when looking up the other two recalls online. thus i have not received the benefit of this safety feature that i paid for three years ago. beyond the time and cost of traveling to/from and waiting for these errors to be fixed is the length of time our money has been wasted on a feature we paid for. there needs to be monetary compensation for these significant errors and please do not allow them to keep stating "at no cost" because there is cost in time and money to consumers. there is also an emotional cost when we were and are still at risk but the parts are not available.

Takata recall - took my vehicle in to have the ocs system software updated due to the recall and was told that that the i needed to replace the ocs sensors in order for the passenger airbags, to work properly. dealer said that this was not covered under the recall and said that it would cost $300. left with the same problem that i had before, i went in for the so called software upgrade. in the event of an accident, chances are that the passenger side airbag, will not be deployed!! why are they trying to make me pay for a defective product that should be covered under the recall??,

Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the vehicle was taken to the dealer to complete the recall repair for nhtsa campaign number: 16v029000 (latches/locks/linkages). the dealer scheduled an appointment and, when the contact arrived for the repair, they stated that the hood latch was on back order and the dealer was unable to provide a time frame that the part may become available. the contact was also informed that there was a fuel pump recall and the vehicle was repaired. the contact was not aware and the dealer did not mention nhtsa campaign numbers: 15v468000 (suspension) and 16v244000 (air bags). the contact had not experienced a failure. parts distribution disconnect.

2013 nissan altima. consumer writes in regards to passenger airbag warning light illuminates with seated passengers. dealership unable to reprogram the airbag diagnostic system control unit. *smd the consumer stated after the air bag recall was performed the failure recurred. updatd 10/05/2017*js

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 16v244000 (air bags) and 16v029000 (latches/locks/linkages). the contact had not been notified of the recalls and was not notified by the dealer prior to purchasing the vehicle. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer over five times. while the vehicle was at the dealer for routine repairs, the contact was informed that the vehicle was included in two recalls that needed to be performed. the dealer would not release the vehicle to the contact until the parts and the repairs were available. the contact was unable to determine when the vehicle would be repaired and was waiting on instructions from the manufacturer. the contact had not experienced a failure. parts distribution disconnect.

My almost 14 year old son who is 106 lbs. sits in the passenger seat as well as a male friend who is 220. the passenger air bag light remains "off" when it should be engaged. i took it to a nissan dealer and they said that they reset it and my son may not be "heavy enough". i am very upset at how they handled it (they didn't) and i can guarantee if there is an incident that happens and these were defective, there will be issues. i have read online that numerous other people have the same problem and they said they have to restart the car to get it to go off. i am not doing that or buying it. i was told that if nissan does not recognize this problem for this specific year and model, that the recall with not be covered. it is obviously an issue. secondly, i made an appt 3 weeks in advance for my hood latch to be repaired to allow for the part to get it. i drove 1.25 hrs to get it replaced, sat there for 2 hours to be told that they were putting in it and then "did not have it in". they had me take a rental car home "to have a supervisor look at my airbag" as it was over the weekend. i got a disgusting car for 5 days to find out nothing had been repaired. i "need to stop in when i am in town sometime" to get my hood latch replaced. really???? i will never go back to billion nissan in sioux city. poor service. i would like both of these issues taken care of promptly. any assistance would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Passenger side airbag indicator light says it's off when an adult passenger of sufficient weight is buckled up and occupying the front passenger seat.

I had the ocs system recall for the airbags. last year they said they fixed it however, i have not seen the light on the dash come on any longer. i do not know if it is working or not working as it is not doing what it is supposed to do. i received a letter stating that within 15years i could bring it back to have them check it and fix again if needed, but when i tried to set up an appointment i was told i have to pay 120$ diagnostic fee for them to look at it even though the letter i have says it will be fixed free of charge.

When driving the car the abs light comes on when someone is in the seat at the correct weight.

Tl* the contact owned a 2013 nissan altima. while the contact's vehicle was at a stop light, it was struck head on by another vehicle. the air bags failed to deploy. the contact sustained head and neck injuries that required medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. the vehicle was destroyed. the manufacturer was not aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 58,437.

I was driving my 2013 3.5 sv altima (v6) at around 35-40 mph, on a city street, with my wife seated on the front passenger seat. i noticed that the passenger air bag 'off' light in the center of the dashboard was illuminated. i asked my wife to shift a bit while being in her seat, which she did, but the airbag 'off' light remained illuminated throughout the journey of about 15-20 mins. this was dangerous and somewhat unnerving as the 'passenger air bag' was showing as 'off' inspite of a passenger being in the seat. this needs to be investigated and fixed.

I have had ongoing problem with the passenger airbag since the car was new. the yellow light on the the dash will sometimes stay on, indicating that the passenger airbag is disabled, even with a 150 lb adult sitting properly in the seat. if i pull over and turn off the car and restart, it usually goes out. i have reported this numerous times to the dealer (i also have pictures of the light staying on), but have been told that they have done everything they can, but cannot fix the problem. i also have reported this twice on this site (nhtsa), but nothing has been solved. it is obvious that both nissan and nhtsa don't care about this safety issue, as many, many others have reported the same problem on this site during the last several years. when someone gets killed because their passenger airbag fails to work, maybe something will get done.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the passenger air bag warning indicator illuminated and remained illuminated while there was a passenger in the seat. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 16v244000 (air bags), but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to michael jordan nissan (3930 durham-chapel hill blvd, durham, nc 27707, (919) 489-3800), but the failure could not be duplicated or retrieve a fault code. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 9,999. *tt *tr

Last year there was nhtsa recall 15v-681 which relates to the occupant classification system (ocs). this is the control unit that turns the air bag protection on/off based on the size of the passenger... i took my car to the nissan dealer but the issue continues. some time later when i asked the service man about it, they say the car is out of warranty, and want to charge me to check and fix the ocs. which is part of the nhtsa recall 15v-681 what is my recourse? i have two kids, a 16 and a 20 years old. the air bag will be turned on or off on either of them randomly. it almost seems that the temperature of the day has something to do with it. another issue with the car is that the parking brake light stays on after the pedal has been released and the car is being driven normally... again my guess is that it seems to occurred more when it is cold but it is intermittent. i have taken a video of the occurrence to show the dealer but they don't care about it. i cant send you the video because it is too big (more than 20mb) and you only allows a file no bigger than 5 mb the issue is still going on but since it is intermittent the date before is only a reference

My vehicle has been in twice now for the passenger airbag light remaining on when a passenger over 130lbs is seated in that seat. i first had this checked by kayser nissan in madison 1/10/14 and was told no problem found then the recall came out and the vehicle was serviced again at kayser nissan and was told the problem was fixed. airbag light has been coming on again with person in seat and vehicle has to be pulled over and turned off and restarted for it to reset properly. this is very inconvenient and unsafe for passengers. the vehicle is mostly driven without passenger so this problem is not noticed right away making it hard to file a lemon law complaint even though it was first complained about within first year and under warranty.

Tl* the contact owned a 2013 nissan altima. while driving 50 mph, the front of the vehicle struck an embankment. the air bags did not deploy. the contact sustained major injuries to the sternum, which required medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was destroyed. the failure mileage was 36,000.

Car jutter & stalled when came to a stop. took car to local nissan dealership and they placed car on diagnostic which came back clear and could not duplicate problem for 2 days. received car back and car did the same thing, took it to a different nissan dealership that said they have heard of same complaints but they have had my car for 5 days and claim to not be able to duplicate the problem. car warranty is almost up and nissan seems to be of no help. passenger airbag light also stays on from time to time. i have read and printed out several identical complaints and there seems to be no resolve.

For 3 years we have been dealing with this particular issue, with no resolution. the dashboard light signaling that the passenger air bag is properly activated for an adult occupant comes on or does not come on when it is supposed to. this occurs whether the car is stationary or on the move. the dealer has told us not to put anything on the passenger seat = ridiculous. the dealer then said that it "reprogrammed the system". then the dealer told us that they needed to replace the sensor. i believe this has been done 2 x. we last had this attended to sept 15, 2015 but the "so-called repair" did not work again. this air bag issue is serious, and we feel unsafe in this car, therefore we have driven less than 2000 miles in 5 months - the car sits in the garage. the problem is intermittant = we don't know when the air bag system is functioning correctly - we must assume it is malfunctioning!

Driving at the rate of 45 miles per hour. my 2013 nissan altima 3.5 sl start surging going faster than the speed limit. i applied on brakes pushing them down to the floor my car hit a 2013 durango suv on the driver side knocking the rear wheel completely off. my car still surging faster on a congested high-way to avoid causing any fatalities my car spend around three times. before coming to a stop. no air bag deployed on my driver's side occupant seat was unoccupied. my nissan altima 3.5 sl was a total loss, a-frame severely damage beyond repair. the seat beast on the driver side turn my large intestine, several feature bilateral pelvic bone, whip lash, neurological disturbance, (l) torn rotator cuff, spinal cord injury where partial paralysis have start to set in my legs. irreversible nerve damage, poor sight, broken teeth whereas; i have to get them all pulled out & go into the hospital to have a complete mouth of implants. the seat belt was so tight that it torn a muscle in my chest cavity (l) side causing my heart not to fill up completely. seeing a psychiatrist after the aftermath of the incident, gastrointestinal doctor, pain specialist,

Tl* the contact owned a 2013 nissan altima. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle revved and accelerated without warning. the contact depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle did not respond. as a result, the contact's vehicle crashed into another vehicle. the air bags failed to deploy. a police report was filed. the driver sustained injuries to the pelvic, both legs, head, teeth, and. medical attention was required. the vehicle was destroyed and towed. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 29,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving 25 mph, the passenger side air bag light remained illuminated. the vehicle was taken to be repaired, but the issue recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 42,000.

After startup with a passenger in the front seat, the passenger side airbag light stays on intermittantly. we have taken it to the dealership for repair 5 times. 4 times they "reprogrammed the pcm according to the recall" and the last time did nothing. i did call nissan and they opened a 'case' prior to the last repair attempt (#25798531) and still no attempt at repair was done because they couldn't duplicate the problem (in 30 miles, don't know how many times they actually got out of the passenger seat and restarted the car). this has been happening almost since new; but we thought the light was supposed to be on! i know that this is not an uncommon problem via research on the internet.

A/c has not worked properly till it just stoped. the ac blows air intermittent cold and hot. compressor not working properly. filled with freon but will not consistently blow cold. headlights very dim. the lenses are clear

Takata recall - airbag warning light continues to come on while the car is in motion after the altima has previously been to the wallace dealership in stuart, florida for repair.

Passanger side air bag no longer works, the air bag says its off and malfunctioned. will not show when someone is sitting inn the seat. thus never setting the passanger air so if you get into an accident it would not deploy. when the air bag malfunctioned it was sitting in the driveway we turned it on and the light came on and has never went out.

Vehicle was recalled for airbag deactivation light for passenger front seat that would turn on intermittently. after recall work was completed, we still experience this light turning on indicating that the front passenger airbags are deactivated. this has typically occurred when my wife (135lbs) is in the passenger seat but it has also happened when i was in the seat and i weigh 200lbs. this occurs when the vehicle is in motion on city streets.

The passenger airbag light turns off (light switches on) even when a passenger is in the carseat. the problem was consistent around 1.5 years back and there was a nissan recall that resolved the problem after 2 attempts. by consistent, i mean the air bag was definitely switched off regardless of whether a passenger is present or not. now the problem is back although the light does not turn off consistently. sometimes the light is off and sometimes it is on. i wrote to nissan about this. unfortunately, my car just went off warranty and the diagnosis itself is $161.

Front passenger airbag remains disabled when full sized adult is sitting in front passenger seat. car was taken to dealer over one year ago for recall on this issue. still has not been resolved. new recall issued oct 2015, took vehicle to nissan for fix on 11/24/15. nissan will not fix, say they have no way to fix the issue. nissan states i will have to continue to drive a vehicle with inoperable passenger air bags. showed nissan service dept video of full sized adult sitting in passenger seat, vehicle running, and "airbag off" light illuminated in center of dash. nissan states there is no fault in the system, and passenger should just "move their legs" to arm the system. passenger seating position does not arm airbag or alter the function of the faulty system. problem occurs randomly, with vehicle moving/stationary.

Randomly, the airbag sensor for the passenger side indicates as being off even when there is someone seating on it. this issue (supposedly) was already been looked at by the local nissan dealer when a recalled was implemented for this issue. but it is happening again.

Passenger air bag light comes on intermittently with an adult passenger in the front seat weighing approximately 140 lbs. the yellow airbag off light comes on intermittently. it usually goes out after about five seconds. sometimes it stays on. i sometimes pull over and turn off the car and restart and it usually goes out like it is supposed to. took car to dealership where we bought it. they said they couldn't duplicate the problem. they reset the computer. problem still persists. i have made several complaints with the dealer. dealership said they could not resolve the problem because it is a weight issue with the person sitting in the seat. 140 lbs and under the light might come on. looking online, it looks like many people are having same problem. this is a definite safety hazard. when light is on, air bags won't deploy if in an accident occurs.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, the ocs warning light remained illuminated. as a result, the contact crashed into another vehicle and the air bags failed to deploy. the passenger sustained head and neck injuries that required medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was driven to the contact's residence. the vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 44,000.

The front passenger air bag light remains illuminated when an adult passenger is seated in the front passenger seat. this continues to occur even though the car was serviced for this recurring problem by the nissan dealer last week under the recall campaign. the software update performed by the dealer has not solved the problem.

2013 nissan altima. consumer writes in regards to vehicle airbag recall and primary hood latch issues. *smd the consumer stated the air bag was not working properly. according to the owner's manual, the light was suppose to come on and then go off, to shoe that it was working properly. the consumer was informed the hood latch had been oiled. *jb

Passenger side airbag light does not cycle off when a adult is on board. this occurs aprox 15% of the time and requires the car to be shut down and restarted. this mitigates the problem most of the time. car has been in for repairs for this problem on 3 occasions to include the spring 14 algorithm recall. if anything, the computer reprogram made it worse. nissan dealers have no fix and ignore the problem. dealer treats me like it is my imagination even though i have video recorded the light on at speed several dozen times. my car is a lease and it is going back in 6 months. this problem is dependent on the "boot" process failing. the light does not come on during travel if it properly cycles when the car is started. if the light successfully goes out 5 seconds after start, it stays out. i am assuming that the passenger airbag is engaged and will function? this problem has occurred from the very first day until now, ongoing....35800 miles.

Tl* takata recall. the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign numbers: 16v244000 (air bags), 16v029000 (latches/locks/linkages), and 15v468000 (suspension). the part was not available within a reasonable time frame to schedule the recall repair. the dealer did not give a specific date for when the part would become available. the manufacturer could not provide an estimated date for when the vehicle would receive the recall repair. the contact was not experiencing a failure. parts distribution disconnect.

The car randomly displays the front passenger airbag deactivation light when the seat is either occupied by someone weighing 130-180 pounds or the seat is empty. all components of the front passenger system have been replaced and recall number 14v138000 has been performed. since this randomly happens, nissan says "if they can't duplicate the problem, they cannot and will not fix it." this started at approximately 20,000 miles and has continued since. the vehicle was being driven on the roadway and the light will sometimes come on. a nissan rep said today, october 29, 2015, that if the front passenger airbag was to deploy while occupied by my wife(5' 5" 180 pounds) or daughter(4' 10" 130 pounds) that "they would be seriously hurt or killed if the airbag deployed." i have pictures and videos showing the malfunction. it has happened on numerous dates.
