Recently reported STEERING problems on 2009 Nissan Altima

Car would not start steering locked up, told it was the steering lock box which was on recall and i never recieved a recall notice, dealer said vin number did not match with recall but my nissan is clearly a 2009, i am afraid to drive it if this part is not replaced i can not start my car and the part is very expensive. i feel if this part was recalled it should be replaced in good standing by the dealer, i surely will never buy another nissan if the dealer will not work with it's car buyers in good faith. car was stationary as it would not start but do not want to get somewhere from home and have this happen again

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. after starting the vehicle, the ignition switch warning light illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the technician stated that the electrical steering lock system needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

They got it do something with this problem that had happen to everybody that own a 09 altima, steering lock is really expensive tp fix it.

My 2009 nissan altima is currently having issues with the defects in the electronic steering column lock (escl). the car just cut off on me as i was parking in a parking spot. luckily i was able to force the gear in park. it disabled the push-button ignition on my car and locked my steering column. so, i was stranded! this is big safety issue because my car could've just continued to roll if i couldn't get it into the parked gear! it's unfair that as a consumer of nissan, i have to experience this issue after the nissan warranty on the escl expired in march 2015 and be posed with paying over $1000 in repair costs. per nissan, there was no specific mileage number that this defect could occur; so they should recall the escl systems in all affected cars instead of covering their own behinds and giving a warranty with unlimited miles and an end date of march 2015. clearly nissan is not concerned with its consumers safety. it's not fair to consumers that bought nissan vehicles that experience the dangerous defect after march 2015. i am a very unhappy consumer at this time.

On my way home my intelligent key light came on. i was thinking that i had to change the battery in my remote.. once i did that, nothing changed. i continued to drive my car. the next day i drove to work. when i got off my car wouldn't start and the key light was on again!! i looked it up and it's the escl going bad!

My intelligent key warning system is going out and also my steering lock system has gone out and the dealership tells me that the part has been extended warranty on it yet i have not been notified of that one now i have to replace the part myself financially

The steering column recall was repaired, but warranty was off. had to pay out of pocket. automatic transmission stopped and recall on it was off. automobile was in motion when it slowed to a crawl on the highway

The steering will not lock in place therefore the car will not start.

Drove my car like i normally do. i park. return to my car and it would not start. the red key warning light was flashing could not turn the wheel. nothing happened when i put my foot on the brake and push the start button. my steering column lock malfunctioned. my car is in the shop. i've been told that this has happened a lot with 2009 nissan altimas. there was an extended warranty for this but my extended warranty and it last year and i knew nothing about this issue.

I was out handling business all day friday and later that evening i had to make my last stop. i went into the store and when i came out my care had no power and my steering wheel wouldn't move. the key indicator light was on, but i still had no idea of how i would get my car started.. i called my husband because it was late and getting dark out (very dangerous). i had to go the whole weekend and week without a car that i've had for the pass 6 years. i contacted the dealership and they informed me that the part would be $1000.00, ridiculous! i was unaware of any recall and take my car to the dealer regularly and was never notified of a recall.

Steering lock becomes stuck (will not allow car to be started). this happens for seemingly no reason. many others have complained as well. only option is to have the vehicle towed and have the steering lock replaced. nissan issued a warranty extension of 3 years which expired in january 2016. however, there is no reason that this should happen and no reason that the fix should not be covered infinitely. could have been stuck on the highway or a bad neighborhood or anywhere. additionally, the fix is extremely expensive (>1,000 --- see attachment). this is no wear & tear issue. this is a faulty part. nissan knew about it. they should have to make it right.

The electronic steering lock fails and locks the steering-wheel. the car fails to start again. i am worry this will lock while driving. is unreliable. repair cost goes up to thousand dollars.

Common problem from all nissan 2009 owners.... steering wheel lock has failed. this is obviously a manufacture defect and the safety point is that it can go out at anytime and leave my wife stranded in places she should not have to worry

I parked my car in my driveway after coming home from the gym. about 45 min i left out to go to work. i tried to start my car and it would not come on. my push to start button locked light appeared and a picture of the steering wheel and brakes with arrows pointing in both directions. i called roadside assistance, they could not help...i had my car towed over to pep boys they stated it was nothing they can do and that i had to take it to the dealership. the dealership did not communicate with me what was wrong with my car but they went and fixed it without my permission and stated that i owed them 850 dollars. i was very upset that they did not update me before fixing it. i did some research and notice that it was a recall on 2009 nissan altimas steering lock but they suspended it. i was very upset because i never received any notice by phone, mail or email that it was a recall on my car. i really hope they they issue another one and some how i can get my money back because i feel like i should have had to pay for an issues that wasn't my fault.

Takata recall i am emailing with hopes that nissan will issue a recall for the 2009 nissan altima's steering lock failure. the warranty on this part was extended, but i didn't have any issues until after the warranty expired. i don't understand how a company can acknowledge that a part is defective and not issue a recall. i had to discover this issue at the end of my work day in 100 degree weather. it is not fair to expect car owners to pay for this out of pocket when nissan is aware of the defective part.

Electronic steering lock sensor fail unable to start car or lock or start. fortunately had just park vehicle.. on city street

Steering lock failure. the car had an extended warranty on this part but nissan refuses to pay to have it replaced because the warranty expired last year. my car is unusable due to the high cost to replace this part. (1000.00) nissan should be required to recall this part and cover the cost since it is a defect on their part. the car was stationary when this happened. it just wouldn't start back up.

Left me stranded in 98 degree heat. had to have the car towed only to find out only the dealership could determine the problem. towed it to the dealer. found out it was a steering lock issue that happens to most 2009 and 2010 altima's. nissan had issued an extended warranty, knowing it was an issue, but not a recall. unfortunately, the extended warranty expired before my car had the problem. i've contacted nissan corporate only to have them tell me "sorry, the extended warranty has expired". no kidding. so, about to have to spend $1,000 for a repair that should be a recall.

Steering lock column failure. just outside of the supposed extended warranty. called nissan took a week to hear back said they would not cover repairs. about a $1000 to replace!

2009 nissan altima will not start they said it was the steering lock control unit that needs replaced. $1,100. nissan knew of the issue and extended the warranty only until 2015. if there was an issue why was i never told about it. i would have had them replace it a long time ago. we should have been told and they should cover the cost!

Takata recall my steering is locking and won't let me turn on the car it was stationary. had to have it towed. needs to be recalled again and fixed for everyone.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. while driving approximately 55 mph, the push button key warning indicator illuminated continuously. the next day, the push button start failed to operate when engaged. the manufacturer issued a customer satisfaction program, which pertained to the replacement of the electronic steering column lock; however, the vin was not included. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

I went to start my2009 nissan altima car that was parked in front of my door and it did not start, the doors would lock and unlock but it would not start it was in the lock position . i had my car towed to the dealership and was told that the electrical tech found that the steering lock failed. it is vey expensive to fix. it will cost me around a $1,000.oo to have it fix. i spoke with the custome service rep with the nissan department and i was told that the extended warranty has expired and that i needed to take my my car to the dealeship and let them dignosed the problems and call back and they may be able to help. called back with the ddiagnostic result and my claim was denied because the warranty has expired in september of 2015 and their was nothing they can do about it. i feel a recall should be call on this part. if there was an extended warranty to have this fix they should have informed buyer of this like it was a recall.

Car would not start at all and it was discovered that it was a failure of the steering lock mechanism. a part that nissan has knowingly extended the warranty on multiple times.

I have a defective steering lock which won't allow the car to start. there was no warning and for my general safety and use of my car, this problem needs to be resolved by nissan motor inc.

Steering lock malfunction!! got stranded in the arizona heat because escl malfunctioned!!! nissan altima 2009 wouldn't start, had to get it towed to auto shop to be told it's a steering lock malfunction!! nissan knows about this but hasn't done anything about it!!!! i'm dissatisfy with nissan

Went to start car to run an errand while at work on lunch break to get in the car and the car would not start. i'll have to get the car towed not to include the daycare late fees that i'm going to have to pay because i am unable to pick my child up from daycare because they close, needless to say it's $1 per minute that i'm late and it is due at the time of pick up. the cost for the part is $708.66 not including the labor, stress, and anxiety that this inconvenience has caused. i am infuriated. my other 2009 nissan altima had to have a new transmission replaced just 2 months ago. the nissan quality is going down the drain!

Steering lock on a 2009 nissan altima broke june 13,2016. 1100 dollars to fix at dealer.

I was parked in the driveway at a relatives, had to move my vehicle from the driveway to the streets. when i came back out to start my vehicle to go home six hours later, it would not start. i contacted triple a, they wasn't successful getting my vehicle started, so i had the vehicle towed to pep boys which was unsuccessful, then i had the vehicle towed to the dealership.

On 6/11/16 drove to gas station went home came out to my car and it wouldn't start all the lights were on saw a yellow key light googled it didn't have to finish it automatically came up nissan power steering went the place i'm financing my car from says that my fob key had to be reprogrammed to my car so now the tow company comes get my car brings it to the nissan dealer and tech calls and says its the power steering and it will cost me 700$ are u serious i don't have that kind of money i just made a car payment last week and paid my car insurance along with rent and bills this is crazy i have a extended warranty and of course its not listed for cover i lost work today and now have to find ways for the rest of the week if this was recalled last year and expired last year that's not right that we still have to pay for nissans mistake

Steering lock failure...car broke down at gas station, won't start, brake won't work, car is locked up. now i have $1,000 bill to fix a problem i should not have had in the first place.

Try to start the car and nothing happens. the push button start and inserting the key into the dash do not work. tried jumping the car and nothing. had the car towed to a certified goodyear repair facility. the service manager stated that the vehicle required a new steering column module. cost of approximately $850.00

I drove my car to work on 6/8/16. i came out to my car after work and my car recognized my key to lock/ unlock it. my car would not start at all. my steering wheel was locked and my break was tight. it was 90 degrees outside and my car was scorching hot. i had no one to come pick me up for over an hour. i googled "09 nissan altima" and didn't even have to finish typing it, and the second thing that pulled up was "09 nissan altima won't start." apparently this is a common problem with the steering lock in this model car and is not very safe. there are hundreds of cases reported online about them having this same problem and it is ridiculous that nissan has not recalled this. i had a beach trip planned to leave on saturday and drive my car. imagine how dangerous this could have been had it have happened while i was 500 miles from home. stranded no telling where for how many hours waiting on a ride. im already having to get my car towed to the dealership which is 55 miles from where i live, not to mention having to pay for that bill too. this has been such an inconvenience considering it is the only vehicle i have to get me to and from work. i understand that they have issued an extended warranty at some point in time, but came to find out it has since expired. what about all the other people that this has happened to since this expired? i think this should never expired considering it is a manufacturer defect and pretty much unavoidable at some point in time. i am completely disgusted at nissan that they have not addressed this problem and issued a recall. i didn't cause this issue, nor does it fall under the normal circumstances of typical wear, tear, or replacement like battery, tires, etc. how is it fair to make me, nissan's consumer, pay $1000+ dollars for something i did not cause? how can nissan knowing sell a defected part on a car and not try to fix it?

Car would not start, towed to dealership, diagnosed as failed steering lock mechanism, a known issue on the 2009 nissan altima that nissan did not recall. the car was not in motion at the time, had difficulty getting it towed since even in neutral the steering was locked down.

Nissan altima 2009 had a defective steering lock that caused me to be struck alone late at night on at cvs store. my car was not at all starting. my car had to be towed to a dealer the next day. i found this issue as manufacture defect. this is a very dangerous if someone struck in isolated place in cold. i had no idea that this was going to happen. this is expensive. i paid 1200 which should be bare by nissan but they have ignored it. this is a defective part in the 2009 nissan altima and there is no way to know if it will happen again and should be covered by a recall for the life of the car. better to sell of 2009 model

Drove to work on 6-4-2016. went out to move my car and it wouldn't start. lights were working, alarm was working but car would not start. i noticed a tiny key emblem on the dash that i had never seen before, come to find out it is the steering lock which there was a recall on. called nissan dealership to fix it and was told the recall expired in july 2015 and it would cost me approximately $900 to fix. i cannot afford 900 dollars for something that they should be fixing for free as it is a nissan induced issue and nothing personal. i have been without a car for almost a week, having to beg rides from people just so i can support my family with the (2) jobs that im working.

My car left me stranded because the steering wheel lock failure. i went to start the car and the car wouldn't start at all. nissan doesn't see this as a safety issue which is ridiculous because this issue is clearly unsafe because it strands the driver. the car becomes immobile and dead. the only way to fix this is to pay at leave $600 for the part plus another $200-$300 for installation. the worst part is that nissan was aware of this problem when they manufactured the car because it is in the owners manual warning the driver that the car will leave you stranded. how is this not a recall?!

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start as the key warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic steering column lock needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 43,918.

The car suddenly didnot start and when checked with the dealer, they said it is a known issue of electronic sterring column lock failure of 2009 nissan altima.

My 2009 nissan altima would not start for me today while i was on my way to atlanta. i stopped for gas and once i hopped on my car, in an unknown location, my car would not start. i haven't had any signs or issue with my car since i bought it 3 years ago. after waiting for hours in a town in which was very creepy i've finally found out it was my escl (electric steering column lock). not only did i have to get my car towed way back to north carolina, i also ended up paying an arm and a leg at nissan!!! come to find out everyone with a 2009 altima has had this problem it seems like! they extended the warranty for a few months and that ended a year ago! i got nothing in the mall from nissan regarding this so i was totally unaware of the defect! this has been a liability for me and my family being that i've spent over $1000 getting this done as well as towing fees! nissan has to do something about this defect or else their will be thousands more than end up stranded who knows where because of nissans defects! and their irresponsibility of their product!!

Steering lock 48700-9n00b went out no warranty nissan dealership said. we did not get any information on this issue. all they have been doing is giving us the runaround said we could bring it in and it would cost us $1k dollars after parts and labor. this is there issue don't see how they are not responsible to fix the issue. they said there was a warranty on the transmission and the noise while we drive don't know if i will ever buy an nissan again after not receiving any information on recalls.

Car won't start. steering lock is defective causing ignition problem.

Electronic steering column lock is defective and will not allow the car to start leaving me stranded with my family without any other way or form of starting my car. nissan will not respond or fix the issue due to expired warranty with only 80k on the car.

Steering lock release malfunction indicator on; can't start car. it's sitting like a bump in my driveway. thanks goodness it didn't leave me stranded!! but now i'm carless!!

Steering lock malfunction and now i'm unable to start my car. nissan knows about this and hasn't recalled and now my warranty is over and i have to pay $900 to get it fixed

The car was stationary and the steering wheel locked and so the car could not be started. i needed to have the car towed to the dealer to have the part replaced for $900 before taxes. nissan is aware of the issue on the part and had extended the warranty but the extension ended in 2015. i don't understand how they can do this -- the defective part needs to fail within a certain timeframe in order for them to make it right?

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. while attempting to restart the vehicle, it failed to start. the vehicle was towed to the manufacturer where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel sensor lock malfunctioned. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 147,000. the vin was unknown.

Takata recall. my complaint is regarding the 2009 nissan altima steering lock failure. my lock failure occurred on 05-22-16. i returned home after a day of spending time with some friends. i parked my car and later that evening, i decided to go to the store. once i got in the car, i couldn't start it. the brake was really hard to push and yellow key light illuminated from my dashboard. the fob would allow me to unlock and close doors. the lights worked, but the engine would not start. i was lucky enough to have this situation occur in the parking lot of my apartment complex otherwise the car could have broken down somewhere really unsafe. my vehicle had to be towed to the nearest nissan dealership where it was fixed for $939.38

Steering wheel lock causing the car to stall completely.
