The brake switch on the altima has needed to be replaced three times since new. the first part was replaced in june of 2015 due to the car not starting, and the vehicle not recognizing the brake was depressed (requirement for key less start). upon dealer inspection, i was charged a very hefty fee for a small part and labor. part: 25320-ax00c showed to be at fault. at second time, august 2016, the same problems persisted. this time, there was a burning smell. i found the part that was replaced, opened it up, and found the inside connectors frozen to the contacts and what look liked a small flash or burn had occurred. the contacts were separated and the car started again. shortly thereafter, the burning smell reappeared and the part was noted to have possibly started on fire very briefly, or been subject to a significant amount of heat. part has been retained. part was replaced with aftermarket part, and car now starts without any smells. dealership deny's problem with brake switch, despite widespread internet chatter about same issue happening to other owners of key less start nissan vehicles.

Issue: unintended acceleration conditions: 2pm/clear/parking lot while making u-turn to the right, brakes did not respond. stepped again on brakes, more firmly, but did not slow car which continued to roll slowly forward about 7 mph. suddenly, loud revving, car continued forward roll. immediately, added left foot to brake, pressing with full weight. no response. about 2-3 second after revving/hard braking, the car opened full throttle and hurtled forward about 1-1/2 to 2 car lengths; slammed into wall. airbag did not deploy my car had only 25290 miles (only about two years of normal usage) at the time the system failed. my left knee sustained small gash from the underside of the steering column when i was slammed back after impact threw me forward, forehead knocked the upper steering wheel. note: about 1 month prior to accident, the audio controls on my steering wheel honked the horn instead. the next day, they were ok. the same thing happened when tested at the collision center after accident; it's on tape. the rep at the collision center was informed of the switch problem from the start. when i them tested days later, the audio controls worked properly. also, an indicator on the dash went from showing the mpg with a bar as i accelerated or slowed, then switched to a digital report of 18 mpg/city. it kept shifting between these indicators without my interference. finally, the airbag failed to deploy although impact clearly exceeded 15 mph. i believe there was a severe failure of the electrical system; the cvt system with its sensors, etc. is dependent on it. my account parallels reports i have uncovered about sudden acceleration. i noted that often an event was precipitated by a slowing, and a turn. when i recently talked to a nissan tech about the switches, airbag, indicator failures, he mentioned pinched harness could be a possibility.
Electronic ignition wont start the car will not recognize the key. my friend had same issue cost him almost 1000k to repair the car. they told him that a common issue all cars have because its one manufacture who makes this key start

I was parked in the driveway at a relatives, had to move my vehicle from the driveway to the streets. when i came back out to start my vehicle to go home six hours later, it would not start. i contacted triple a, they wasn't successful getting my vehicle started, so i had the vehicle towed to pep boys which was unsuccessful, then i had the vehicle towed to the dealership.
My 2009 nissan altima had a defective steering lock that caused me to be stranded alone late at night on june 10, 2016 - not able to start my car. my car had to be towed to a dealer the next day. this is a very dangerous situation to be in because i had no warning that this was going to happen and this time it was not too cold. i was able to use my cellphone to call a friend to help. i had to get a ride back to my car the next day and wait for a tow truck. i was without my vehicle for 3 days waiting for it to be serviced. this cost me $900 to fix. this is a defective part in the 2009 nissan altima and there is no way to know if it will happen again and should be covered by a recall for the life of the car.
My 2009 nissan ultima was parked in my work parking lot and would not start keyless entry pad mount function and had the lock steering gave me problems and it would not start i felt endangered because everyone at work left and i was all alone waiting for a tow truck.
Drove to work on 6-4-2016. went out to move my car and it wouldn't start. lights were working, alarm was working but car would not start. i noticed a tiny key emblem on the dash that i had never seen before, come to find out it is the steering lock which there was a recall on. called nissan dealership to fix it and was told the recall expired in july 2015 and it would cost me approximately $900 to fix. i cannot afford 900 dollars for something that they should be fixing for free as it is a nissan induced issue and nothing personal. i have been without a car for almost a week, having to beg rides from people just so i can support my family with the (2) jobs that im working.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start as the key warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic steering column lock needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 43,918.
Electronic steering column lock is defective and will not allow the car to start leaving me stranded with my family without any other way or form of starting my car. nissan will not respond or fix the issue due to expired warranty with only 80k on the car.
Steering lock malfunction and now i'm unable to start my car. nissan knows about this and hasn't recalled and now my warranty is over and i have to pay $900 to get it fixed
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. while attempting to restart the vehicle, it failed to start. the vehicle was towed to the manufacturer where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel sensor lock malfunctioned. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 147,000. the vin was unknown.
Takata recall. my complaint is regarding the 2009 nissan altima steering lock failure. my lock failure occurred on 05-22-16. i returned home after a day of spending time with some friends. i parked my car and later that evening, i decided to go to the store. once i got in the car, i couldn't start it. the brake was really hard to push and yellow key light illuminated from my dashboard. the fob would allow me to unlock and close doors. the lights worked, but the engine would not start. i was lucky enough to have this situation occur in the parking lot of my apartment complex otherwise the car could have broken down somewhere really unsafe. my vehicle had to be towed to the nearest nissan dealership where it was fixed for $939.38
Passenger occupant sensor has failed. the amber passenger occupant dashboard light always remains on. this means that even with the seat occupied by an appropriate sized adult, the light says the occupant is not being 'sensed'. also, the control panel above the steering wheel has a red flashing airbag light. the nissan dealership says the error code indicates a failure in the passenger seat occupant airbag sensor. my cost is at least $2400 to replace the passenger seat. i am unable to pay that kind of money. i am hoping for a nissan recall or technical bulletin on that make, model and year. i see many other years of this make and model had the issue and the manufacturer fixed them at no cost. that is what i am hoping for. this car has never had an accident. this just happened out of the blue.
The electronic steering column lock failed after my son had parked his car at a convenience store. this left my son in a dangerous situation with no access to a functioning car in a neighborhood that i do not consider to be safe. the resolution was to call and wait for a tow truck to have the vehicle brought to the dealer where the issues was repaired. it is my understanding that this escl issue is a know problem for which nissan initially issued a service bulletin and extended warrantee for that they have since withdrawn. i feel this issue should result n a recall for safety reasons as it can place a person in a dangerous situation without the ability to start the car.
Steering wheel lock causing the car to stall completely.
Not too long ago my car would not start in several ocassions i had my children with me ages 4 & 7 in the heat stranded because my car would not recognize my key... i have contacted nissan consumers affairs at one point their was a recall but has expire in 2015 ..now its june 2016 and my car just started doing this i made 1yr with my pre owned car still makin payments not once was i notified about this recall..i just felt scared and this vehicle is not safe for me and my children.it could leave us stranded any time and its june i cannot risk it in this heat.... this is a safety issue... nissan did state to me that their was a recall and their sorry but it has expired and im responsible for the part... this is a manufacture issue they knew their vechicles had a safety issue when they made them i believe they are responsible for this costly matter... i am a single mom of 2 still making payments on a car that wont unlock and read my key i need help please someone..... this part is $680+ labor=$1150!!!! i believe nissan is responsible for this issue ...

Steering lock failed stranding me with a non starting car 190 miles from home with a toddler with no heat or ac.... it is a common nissan failure and nissan will not assist
Steering lock mechanism failed causing my wife to be stranded. this problem is effecting thousands of other owners of 2009 nissan altimas. there needs to be a recall on this part.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. when attempting to start the vehicle, it was unable to start. the "push to start" did not start the engine and the steering failed. the failure was included in an extended warranty; however, the contact was not sure if the vehicle would still be covered. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 143,000.
The car will not start. there is a yellow key light on the dash and a red car light that blinks. the battery in the key is fine and opens the car doors and locks them ok. i got into the car this morning and it will not start.
The escl wheel lock will not release to let the vehicle start
April 20 got off of work went to my car and it wouldn't start. thought it was the battery and had battery replaced. vehicle still will not start. looked on line and seems it is the steering lock system failure that is disabling my car. called dealer and they said there is no recall on this part but yet every time i look something up online i see hundreds of complaints of people experiencing the same problem on the same year and model.
Car will not start or turn on accessories. steering lock mechanism failed. i was unable to do anything with the car until aaa can to tow it to the deal.
I was about to start my car at a gas station the vehicle was stationary and my car would not start leaving me stranded it is a known issue with nissan and it was diagnosed as a steering lock control unit failure which prevents the vehicle from sensing your key fob which prevents you from starting the vehicle and you are stuck. there should be a recall for this defect leaving drivers stranded and the car useless. i could have been robbed or other. nissan is aware of this issue and has done nothing to notify owners and replace stearing control unit.
I can not start my car. when i press the brakes it will not trigger my automatic key to turn my car on. there have been several times i am not able to start my car. now i have to fix the brake light and harness for 600$ at my local trustworthy repair shop. i called nissan and they told me they have not heard of a harness issue. but i googles and found a bulletin and many 1000 of people with same complaint. my repair shop did the same too. this is a dangerous situation to have a car that will not start and the brake lights that do not work!!!!!
Nissan altima 2009 issue: escl, steering wheel lock, engine won't start and key is in car.
The electric wheel lock system failed rendering my car non operational. after researching this issue online it is a well documented problem with this car and potentially dangerous. there is no warning that it will fail and is not due to maintenance neglect. when it fails it disables the ignition system to the car so you cannot even switch to the accessory function. it can also leave the steering wheel in the locked position making it very difficult to move the car. this occurs when the car is parked and try to start it.
Was going out of town and due to bad weather conditions on the area i was supposed to drive to, i did not go. however, on sunday afternoon i got into vehicle, tried to start it and it would not start. now, if i had of gone out of town like i was supposed to, i would have been stranded. i often have my small granddaughter with me. glad she wasn't this time. had to call tow service.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start, both with the push to start button and the emergency key slot. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage and vin were unknown.
My nissan altima would not start. a yellow key shows up on the dash board that prevent it from starting. this problem prevented me from going to work and would cost me over a 1000. imagine if location my car stop was unsafe with my kids in the car. this unsafe and nissan should cover the cost for their faulty product.
I drove my nissan altima to work as i normally do, parked in the same spot i always park in. no problem at that point. at the end of my work day i got into my vehicle to drive home and it would not start. i noticed an icon showing on the instrument panel, it stated one word: key. i called my husband who brought our spare key to see if that would start the vehicle: no. i left the vehicle parked at my place of work. the next morning i called the nissan dealership only to be informed that i could not have an appt for at least 2 weeks and that the issue is known but not covered under a recall or warranty. i was very thankful that i was at work and not stranded in an unfamiliar area. i believe that nissan needs to correct the faulty part. this is something that is happening with more than just the vehicle i own. a quick look on the internet brought up many complaints on the same issue in different models. hopefully this will not result in a death before something is done forcing nissan on the correction. i remember the gm ignition recall that did not take place until people died!
My car would not start after i parked it on a city street, i was stranded at night! after thankfully being able to safely get a ride and leaving my car, i had to go back to my car the next day. i had changed the key battery thinking that could be reason, but the car still would not start. i had to call a tow company to bring my car to a nissan dealership. i learned that there had been an extended warranty for 2009 altimas, because the electronic steering column lock had failed. i never was notified and had no choice but to have it fixed. this was a baffling and frightening experience and i was lucky that i was not stranded in the middle of nowhere!
2009 nissan altima would not start after shut off which required a tow to nissan dealership ( auto fair nissan tewksbury, ma). paid $119 for diagnostic which confirmed a faulty electronic steering column lock (escl) unit. purchased and replaced the unit. although there are a record number of complaints, the unit was not covered by warranty. receipts availabe
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. the contact stated that while in park, the steering wheel seized. in addition, the vehicle failed to start. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the vehicle was towed to a dealer, who diagnosed that the steering wheel lock needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 100,120.
Yesterday morning, the car no longer recognized my key fob and i was unable to start the engine. upon contacting nissan, i was informed that this is related to the electronic steering control lock assembly. the vehicle was stationary at the time of the incident and located in my home garage. even after this assembly is replaced, i will continue to be concerned about the safety of my family. if the car were to no longer recognize my key fob again, but we are no longer in the safety of our home, we would be open to the elements. it's also possible that our means of transportation for emergencies could be unavailable when needed.
Car would not start, locked up on me. vehicle towed to nissan, told it will cost me close to $1000 to repair, noticed other costumers had this same problem. nissan extended the warranty for 6 years which expired 4-25-2015. my vehicle was parked in plaza parking lot
My 2009 nissan altima stop working after i started and was getting ready for work. when i got ready to leave i notice it stopped and when i try again it would not start at all. come to find out after having to tow it to the dealer it was an internal failure of steering lock assembly. repair cost me over $1000. supposedly nissan had offer an extra warranty on the issue but it expired last year which leave me with expense. i try calling nissan to find out if they will cover the cost but did not get any assistance. i don't think it's fair that they will cover the cost since it is a known issue that they are aware of and they choose to offer a warranty that expire. they don't know at what point in time the failure will occur.
Car would not start due to a failure of the electronic steering column lock thus leaving myself and passengers stranded for hours. this is a latent defect in the car, and a known issue, which nissan has already acknowledged by extending the warranty from 3 to 6 years. unfortunately the issue only occurred after the 6 years so was not covered under warranty. nissan needs to issue a recall as this is a major safety issue with stranded drivers and passengers.
Takata recall - although my car has not yet been affected by he recall i believe that it will be. the passenger airbag sensor is faulty which affects the amber dashboard passenger airbag light from working properly which therefore will not allow the airbag to deploy if in an accident. or more so allowing the airbag to deploy at any given time without being in an accident. this sensor disarms the whole airbag system from working properly which is a serious safety hazard.
The steering lock malfunctions on this car, and other years and models. this causes the driver to be stranded when the car will not turn on due to the car being in an anti theft mode. nissan is well aware that this is an issue and is profiting from it. the customer will have to tow the car to nissan (since they are the only ones that can fix it), and it will cost $1000 to fix. nissan states that due to it not being a safety concern, they do not have to recall this. this has affected countless customers however and it is unethical. this is not even something the person themselves or another mechanic can fix since it is electrical. i do not feel that nissan should be profiting from a part that they know is defective
I started the vehicle at home and drove to the my mothers house(, approximately 6 minutes away.) when i went to start the vehicle it would not start. the little key light went on so,i changed the battery for the remote as some people reported that was the problem. the vehicle still would not start. called the local nissan dealer, they said it sounded like the electronic steering lock .after making some research i just found out that is a commmon problem with this model and year.t. . i believe this is a safety concern and request it is issued as a recall. many people online are complaining about the lock steering issue..i beliene nissan should at least be responsible of replacing the parts.this is our third car that we have bought and have not had any issues before.
Steering lock control unit fails to disengage even though key (fob) is present. doors and trunk will unlock/lock so vehicle recognizes fob/key. nissan had a warranty fix, but did not notify owners. now period has closed leaving owner wit h a $1000+ bill so car can be used.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. when the contact hit one of the steering components, the vehicle was able to start. the failure persisted. the contact was not able to restart the vehicle by hitting the same component. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 85,000.
No star. steering lock bloqued
Leaving work i went out to my car to go home. when i went to the start the car, the car would not start. a yellow key light came on. unable to start the car, i looked up online possible causes and figured out it was the electronic steering column lock. the car had to be towed which cost $30+ and had to be repaired. nissan issued an extended warranty because of this particular part having caused problems in the past. the repair cost $1092.
