Problems with 2009 Nissan Altima UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On average, the 2009 Nissan Altima starts to “feel” problems with the UNKNOWN OR OTHER and its various aspects after 93 097 miles.

Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2009 Nissan Altima

Steering wheel lock malfunctioned causing car not to start. was having a severe asthma attack at the time and was in a life or death situation. thankfully others were around that could take me to the er. this part was a known issue as evidenced by an extended warranty on this part but no customer notification was ever issued to me. i was lucky! to be in a situation where you are panicked and not thinking clearly and trying to get help only to be held hostage by a known faulty part that would not let my car start is infuriating.

I am an owner of a 2009 nissan altima 2.5 sl in louisiana. the dashboard of the car has become very sticky and shiny as if it is melting. on a sunny day the reflection on the front windshield causes poor visibility resulting in a serious safety concern.

Electric steering column lock (escl) failed and left me stranded at work. had to wait 2 hours for someone to come get me.

Nissan has refused to recall their faulty electronic steering lock unit that is needed to turn the vehicle on. if it does not lock the wheel in place it will not allow the push start ignition to start the vehicle, thus leaving their occupants stranded with no option other than to have their vehicles towed to a nissan dealership and forced to pay upwards of $1200 for the replacement of a defective factory part. they offered a extended warranty to address this issue, but neglected to inform consumers of this. they are clearly trying to get out of paying for their mistakes and are passing the cost on to their unsuspecting customers.

Takata recal: 2009 nissan altima has a faulty steering lock. this is causing me to be stranded and not able to have a functional car. i have no receive any noticed about an extended warranty and this is unsafe being stranded. i am looking to get a recall on the part of have a part provided to me which i should now have to pay 500+ for the part and then also labor. please look into this issue i know i am not the only one have the same problem. the car was purchased in 2012 as well. this is ridiculous that nissan is making me pay for something that is a defect with there cars!

I parked my car in the school parking lot, ran in to take care of some errands. when returning to my car to leave it would not start. it kept saying to press the brake when i was pressing the brake and trying to start. it never started. i had to have it towed home. it will not even come on auxiliary to get mileage or anything else. i then talked with someone at autozone to see what the problem was - he advised me that it was the steering wheel lock that has gone bad and that nissan would not fix it due to the warranty running out. i found that many people have had this problem and nissan knew about it and did not file a recall. i now have to pay $1200 to have this fixed on my car and i don't think that this is fair.

Steering lock failure caused car to be unable to be started. owner stranded at work with vehicle in parking garage. needed a tow and not easy to find tow company that was willing to pick up on 5th level of parking garage. dangerous situation. this is a known defect with 2009 nissan altimas...owner was never notified of earlier recall. this recall should not have been ended...many more people continue to be put at risk!

Steering lock. the steering lock will fault and prevent the car to be started. this is a safety hazard because a person can be stranded. it sounds like this might be a frequent occurrence of this year and model (dealer had mentioned this fact).

Issue: steering lock fault preventing car from starting. dear sir: i am very angry, frustrated and disappointed with this ongoing issue with my '09 altima. i am sure you can imagine how disconcerting it is to not know when or if your car will start. i have been repeatedly stranded by this problem and have had to be jump started on many occasions and finally towed to the dealership to hopefully fix once and for all. this is the 2nd repair i've had to have done on the same or related issue: steering lock. the first repair was resolved by replacing the brake light switch for a total of $177.18. the second repair was fixed by replacing the steering lock for a total of $908.04 plus rental of $45.00. the towing was included in my auto insurance policy. i realize this is not a new vehicle, however in my mind, this is an item that should not fail as there is no manual/alternative starting mechanism. not to mention, i'd be fine with the 'old fashioned' key start. i'm not sure why nissan hasn't stepped up in a major way to fix this known problem. a simple google search will tell you this is no small/isolated issue. as a multiple nissan vehicle owner and hopefully a long time, repeat customer i am respectfully requesting a full reimbursement in the amount of - $1,130.22.

I was parked at the hairdressers i came out my car would not start. it is the steering module which nissan knows is a faulty part but doesn't want to do a recal for. they extended the warrenty instead of doing a recall i am 7 months past the extended warranty so am paying $1000.00 for a part that nissan knows is their issue

I was out handling business all day friday and later that evening i had to make my last stop. i went into the store and when i came out my care had no power and my steering wheel wouldn't move. the key indicator light was on, but i still had no idea of how i would get my car started.. i called my husband because it was late and getting dark out (very dangerous). i had to go the whole weekend and week without a car that i've had for the pass 6 years. i contacted the dealership and they informed me that the part would be $1000.00, ridiculous! i was unaware of any recall and take my car to the dealer regularly and was never notified of a recall.

Catalytic converter not working causing the car to drive ineffectively, car speed declines and sometimes the car rpms stay at 3000 and won't accelerate.

My 2009 nissan altima slows down from 75 mph to 40-35 after traveling for 4 hours on long distance (trips) . i have had to pull over several times in order for the car to cool off and gain speed. it is extremely dangers to when big trucks and other vehicles are coming behind you at a fast speed and you have to pull over quickly. i have to put a transmission valve kit and cooler on my car because nissan neglected to put these parts on my car. shame on you nissan. how can you sleep at night knowing your error, greed, or lack of compassion can cause people their lives while on the highway. this is a safety issue that has been complained about on various blogs and no recall has taken place. i am annoyed and then my case manager for my complaint told me i should have taken out the extended warranty. no, don't blame this on me. this is a manufacturing issue. it is unfair to pass the blame unto the consumers. safety is first or has the new generation of manufactures forgotten about this

I have a defective steering lock which won't allow the car to start. there was no warning and for my general safety and use of my car, this problem needs to be resolved by nissan motor inc.

The steering lock control unit failed, resulting in my car being unable to start. if this had happened while i was parked in a remote location, i could have frozen or starved to death. this is a common issue as i found from doing some searching on the internet, with hundreds and hundreds of similar complaints. nissan should recall the 2009 altima or issue a recall to preemptively replace this part.

My 2009 nissan altima had a defective steering lock that caused me to be stranded alone late at night on june 10, 2016 - not able to start my car. my car had to be towed to a dealer the next day. this is a very dangerous situation to be in because i had no warning that this was going to happen and this time it was not too cold. i was able to use my cellphone to call a friend to help. i had to get a ride back to my car the next day and wait for a tow truck. i was without my vehicle for 3 days waiting for it to be serviced. this cost me $900 to fix. this is a defective part in the 2009 nissan altima and there is no way to know if it will happen again and should be covered by a recall for the life of the car.

Steering lock control unit died. no signs of wear, car just didn't start on a random day. dealership specifically said, "found steering lock cont- unit internally oepn...)" when i asked the service guy at the dealership how this can happen, his response was "it can just happen over time".

I own a 2009 nissan altima on may 16, 2016 i arrived home at 10:30 i parked the car in my drive way turned the car off an went inside my house. i prepared my dad's lunch and went back inside the vehicle when i attempted to start the car it would no longer start the a red car light with key was blinking and a orange key as well my windows are rolled down and won't roll up and its been raining please help i called nissan they asked if without hurting myself could i jerk the brake and start the car they want me to pay for a diagnostic at nissan this has happened to so many people

Steering lock control unit failed . car would not start left me stranded and needed to be towed to dealer . $ 1000 out of pocket cost for deffected part that extended warranty did not cover expensives due to end of their extended waranty campaign ????like obviously nissan north america inc., have knowledge of the defective equiptment and need to recall the part.

Steering wheel lock failure- disabling the car where it will not start. nissan is aware of the issue and has not done anything about it. to get the car fixed it's going to be over 1000 dollars.

On april 10, 2016, the steering wheel on my 2009 nissan altima suddenly, without any warning or prior problems, completely froze while i was parked in a different city from my home. i was unable to start the car or do anything. i tried jumping the engine and it did not help. i had no choice but to have it towed to the nearest nissan dealer, which was closed that day, and had to wait until the next day to have it checked. the dealer said it was a faulty steering wheel lock. they charged me $699 for new parts and $250 for labor, just to replace a defective part, which i later discovered was a widely known defect. fortunately i was parked in a relatively safe area while it was still daylight. had this occurred at night in an unsafe area, this could have been quite a dangerous and frightening situation not being able to start or drive the car.

My car started fine yesterday i saw the key light came on i assumed it was because the battery was low. i changed the battery in both keys. the next day my fiancee drove my car to work an hour away. it would not start at all, the light comes on and the steering is not locked but the car will not start at all and it can not shift at all. after looking in the manual it states that it is an idicator that the steering lock has failed. this seems to be an issue with hundreds of other cars and it is going to cost 1200 to fix this. my fiancee was stranded an hour from home and his cell died, not to mention he works nights and got off at 5am and could not find a ride or a nearby place to call home long distance.

The dashboard of my 2009 nissan altima is melting, creating a shiny, sticky surface. the shine from the melted dash reflects on the windshield causing a glare that makes it hazardous to drive.

Yesterday morning, the car no longer recognized my key fob and i was unable to start the engine. upon contacting nissan, i was informed that this is related to the electronic steering control lock assembly. the vehicle was stationary at the time of the incident and located in my home garage. even after this assembly is replaced, i will continue to be concerned about the safety of my family. if the car were to no longer recognize my key fob again, but we are no longer in the safety of our home, we would be open to the elements. it's also possible that our means of transportation for emergencies could be unavailable when needed.

I have a 2009 nissan altima with push-start ignition and respective 'smart key'. while 2 hours away from home and alone, the electronic steering column lock mechanism malfunctioned and therefore did not recognize my smart key was in the vehicle and would not allow me to start the car. i was stranded alone, at night, 2 hours from home with a vehicle that would not start due to malfunctioning part. i had to have the car towed to my local nissan dealership where the diagnosis was made that the steering column lock malfunctioned and needs to be replaced. upon calling nissan corporate, i was informed that this was a known issue, however my car was no longer under warranty and it would not be covered. i purchased this car as certified pre-owned with the expectation that any safety related known issues would be addressed. i was never made aware of the issue or the possibility that i could be put in a dangerous situation. nissan told me that while they were aware the part was mis-manufactured, the part was not a 'recall' (as determined by nhtsa) criteria) and as such would not have been proactively fixed if not broken. they did however extend the warranty on the part, but only for 6 years, assuming is a driver had this problem it would have occurred in the first 6 years of ownership.my occurrence was when the vehicle was 8 years old. i feel like this a major safety concern especially if there was potential for the steering column lock to malfunction while driving and nissan should have issued a voluntary recall or indefinitely extended the warranty.

My 2009 nissan altima had its steering column lock malfunction and left my wife stranded in a blizzard. she went to work, was going to head home for the day and the car wouldn't start. so i started the process, check the batteries in both the car and the key fob. as it turns out from researching the problem that it's a steering column lock failure. this is a very common problem with 2009 and 2010 altimas. nissan has full knowledge of this issue, but fails to recall these cars. they did extended warranty on this part, but of course, this occurred after the extended warranty had expired. its a $1000 plus repair minimum and the part that they want to replace it with is faulty as well. in efforts to contact nissan consumer affairs i was treated like crap. they cant do anything for me until i have it towed(at my expense) to a certified nissan dealer(45 miles away) and have them diagnose the problem. after watching numerous videos on this issue. i'm sure that this is the issue and i have many hesitations on having the part replaced because again the new part is also faulty, and comes with no warranty. so nissan has left me with two choices. option a: have car towed, pay the labor, and replace with another faulty part($1100 at least). or option b: try to fix myself by bi-passing the part all together. unfortunately this option is going to be a temp fix and the part is riveted so access to it is difficult. not to mention affects my resale value. its almost like this was nissan's plan with designing this steering lock mechanism. its a safety hazard as my wife and countless others have been stranded alone. after watching numerous diy videos i was able to get the car home by tapping the part numerous times with a hammer. we were able to get the car home, but there it sits in the driveway useless. ive tried to start it since and guess what...nothing. the vehicle is useless.

Parked my car in a store parking lot. when i returned my car failed to start with a failure to recognize my key fob. i replaced the fob battery still won't start. it was getting dark i had to leave my car in the parking lot. returned the next day. nothing will start my car. when online to see that this is a common problem with my car. i had my car towed to the dealership. was told the extended warranty had expired 03/15. i only have 44500 miles on my car. nissan never notified me that there was a problem. it cost me $964.00 to get it fixed. and of course this all happen when my husband was out of town. why was this not a recall?

Went to get gas vehicle wouldn't start. called dealer and concluded electronic steering lock was defective causing car not to start. had car towed to dealer since car out of extended warranty had to pay $933 to dealer for repair. this problem is quite common and had it fixed in a short time. this needs to be a recall. herba nissan of johnstown ny completed repair.

Melting dashboard. makes it very hard to see. also the cracking and peeling may be effecting the airbag functions.

Merry christmas nissan! thanks for making it a memorable one. i drove to a relatives home the day after christmas. the car was parked on a city street. when i went to leave, the car would not start or do anything. a yellow key symbol appeared. the car would not start, nothing was happening. the brake was very stiff. no ability to shift. no radio or dash lights would work. i had to have the vehicle towed to a local nissan dealership. electronic steering lock failure at a cost of $900.00. i was then told by nissan dealership that nissan was well aware of the issue and they had added an extended warranty to fix the bad part but it had expired earlier in 2015. i only went to dealership 3 times with sterring lock issues previously only to be told that it was my fob not the steering lock. i have 2 fobs and questioned how 2 would be having issues. never a good answer or option. never was i told there was bad part that was covered under warranty! shady business, the part should be recalled for safety and negligence. what if it stopped working and locked while i was actually driving? i travel for work and what if it stopped in a bad area leaving me stranded? what if it was extreme cold or heat? the issue is that nissan knows about a bad part but have left customers to pay $900 to fix their bad part leaving people in danger. there are countless stories online about this same issue. nissan changed the part in approx 2010. they need to own their mistake and stop leaving people stranded in harms way. i don't understand why nissan is allowed to make a bad part, know that the bad part will disable the car and leave people stranded without any notice. the consumer gets insult to injury and has to pay for nissan's mistake at a $900.00 cost. again, merry christmas nissan.

Was out of town. got into car. would not start. change battery in key fob. still would not start. researched on internet. very common well known issue all over the internet. exact same issue. people stranded. i called the dealership. they knew exactly what is was 100%. said i had to have it towed in so i did. estimate for electric steering wheel lock was $1400. i got a second opinion from another nissan dealership which again new exactly what the problem was and gave me a estimate for $650. so i had it towed to this dealership. i found out nissan extended the warranty but mine expired a few months ago. my complaint is nissan is not owning up to their reputation knowing that people are getting stranded because of this faulty electrical steering wheel lock and not informing their customers of the defect until its too late. yes they extended the warranty but if i had known that i was going to one day get in my car and it not start i would have paid for it myself and had it fixed or traded the car in. being stranded alone out of town is unsafe. i was out the expense of getting a car to get home which was a hour and half away and back to the dealership the next day, two towing expenses and $650 for repair. i expected more from nissan. this will be the last nissan i purchase.

I was leaving work as i approach my vehicle which was parked in the secured lot; i used my smart key to unlock the door in which it did. and when i entered my vehicle it did not start. the indicator on the dash was showing representation of no key in the vehicle but my key could still lock & unlock the doors. i proceeded to change the battery to my smart key 3x and to no avail did that fix my situation.

Push to start cars are not starting. it must be towed to the dealership where replaced a faulty break switch and now have to replace itelligent key system. in both cases the car will not turn over and must be towed back to the dealership as they are the only ones who can repair the car.

Electronic steering column lock malfunction. parked vehicle in the driveway, came out an hour later and the vehicle will not start. a yellow key light and a red vehicle light with a key symbol inside are the only things on the dash that will appear. brake pedal is hard and the push to start will not work.

Our 2009 nissan altima sl experienced a steering lock failure leaving my wife stranded with two young children in the car. the car was not able to turn on or even shift into neutral. nissan is aware of the problem but would not do anything about it. repair costs were nearly $1000.

My family and i were stranded in the middle of the night last week for several hours for my car to be towed cause the engine would not start and jump start the battery did not work. after towed it home and research / diagnostic, found out that it is a well know that the steering lock box is defective. however, calling nissan dealer about it and will not make the recall on the part. my car just die after 5 years. 3 months after the extended warranty. my dealer will not fix it and nissan will not assist to get it fix either. they keep wanting me to bring it to the deal for diagnostic, when in-fact it is obvious that the steering lock bock is disabled the car from starting. i brought it in, and they kept telling me no recall and want me to pay for it (almost $1,000), yet recommending me to fix other issues saying it could have been tune up needed that why my car would not start.. ugh!!!

Takata recall-thanksgiving eve stranded with a key/keyfob unable to start car on lock. november 2015-cincinnati, oh (highland/ridge) parking lot i thought it was the key fob not working. had a kind women take me to a store to purchase and / replace my 2032 battery within key fob. still did not work. read the manual several times including contacting the dealership to assist in working through any unknown issues that i might have not discovered or tried. came back out and tried to start the car, a key light was flashing on the dash, brake was hard to press. the car still would not start. i was forced to have car towed to dealership several hours later. while waiting, i googled the result, i was shocked at all the complaints on the same malfunction."

2009 nissan altima would not start. dealer said that it was an issue with the steering lock mechanism being stuck. went to nissan usa's website and saw that a lot of people were having this issue, and it has been talked about all over the internet. so many complaints about this very issue that it looks like nissan extended a warranty covering the cost to fix the problem if this happened to your vehicle. the caveat, they only extended this by 6 years. took it to the dealer and they told me it was the steering lock. i called nissan, and they told me that i missed the coverage by two months. if there are so many people having this very issue, why isn't there a recall. it's a clear product defect.

Nissan will not honor a recall on my vehicle for the steering lock due to the fact that the extension for the recall has ended even though it end on 02/04/2015 of this year and it is now october 2015 and was never notified of the recall. they should be held responsible for any and all recalls on there brand even after the end dates.

Car deesn't start, it is because of faulty steering lock system. nissan extended warranty on this part but didn't do recall. it has happend to many people and yesterday i was stranded and my car wouldn't start. the repair is costly and nissan is not paying for it.

There was a malfunction with the electronic steering column lock. i went to start my car and it would not start. the electronic steering column lock needed to be replaced.

The electronic steering column lock issue is prevalent in nissan altima model year 2009-2010 and nissan has failed to take responsibility for this known issue. i experienced the issue conveniently outside of nissan's "extended warranty claim period" and as a result i am stuck with a $1000 repair that i have taken full financial burden from. this was a known issue that should have been fixed by nissan under a recall as this is in fact a safety concern because nobody should be concerned about their car not starting especially if they are in an uncomfortable situation and need to get to safety quickly. this issue occurred while the vehicle was stationary and that by no means excuses it from being a safety concern, because it is very much a safety concern. http://www.nissanproblems.com/trends/steering-wheel-locks/

Takata recall. my 2009 nissan altima has suspension problem might be the struts not exactly sure what it could be. reading the press release by nthsa explained that 2009-2010 nissan altima and maxima has suspension or struts recall that was built out of spec and explained the feel of drive and i experience the same exact feeling that was described in the press release. the car seems like it slides and seems shaky when exceeding a certain speed. i feel the shake and sliding when i drive on the freeway and at freeway speeds. not sure how it happened just drove down the freeway one day and felt a lot of shaking. brought it to a nissan service center and a firestone as well but they couldn't pin point the problem. it was alot of " it could be's " and " i think". so please help me out not sure what is going on with my daily driver.

Dashboard is sticky and melting causing a glare across windshield making it difficult to see when driving.

I got in my car fine this morning with my key fob, but the key light was on when i got inside. when i pushed the break to push the button trying to start my car it would not turn on. the light stayed on lock. the steering wont budge and the break is locked. my car is in park and the wheels are straight.

I have 2009 nissan altima and it has a very sticky, shiny dashboard. some part of the dashboard is so shiny that it creates a glare on windshield during daytime when it is sunny outside and makes it very difficult to see the other cars, pedestrians etc.during driving. this a huge safety concern and should be take care of by nissan asap.

Dashboard has a sticky residue that continues to worsen. the glare from the sticky residue reduces visibility.

I had stopped at the grocery store and went to get back in my car and it would not start, it would not even recognize the key. my key fob would unlock, lock & pop my trunk but my car acted like it wouldn't accept my key fob. my steering wheel was not locked & it has been towed and sat overnight & its still not locked, my electronic steering wheel lock has gone out on my car & with all the research i have done i found out several other people are having the same problem. nissan extended the warranty on this part to 6 years but it seems all these failures are happening after that 6 year mark has been hit. nissan is well aware of the problem and released a bulletin on it but not a recall, i believe with all the problems that everyone is having that a recall should be issued i was quoted 800-1000.00 to fix this problem. this is evidently a faulty part installed by nissan and they should make it right

On a 3 hour trip, the altima lost speed. current speed was 75-80 mph, dropped to 60 mph on the hwy. transmission fluid check to be good and no warning lights or anything happen. car lost power/speed on a small incline and this has happen on several occasions doing a road trip. this should be a recall

Car could not be started and had to be towed to a nissan deal where they charged me $900.00 to fix. this is a defective part, electronic steering column lock, that nissan knows about. they extended the warranty for this part and have it listed on the nissanassist.com website. it is specific to the 2009 altima and maxima. they refused to help with cost in anyway because the warranty expired 2 months prior...even though they know it is a big enough issue to have the extended warranty on it. if the part is defective...why put any time frame on it. do a recall, or fix them as it happens.
