We have classified the 256 complaints from 2003 Nissan Altima about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
I have a 2003 nissan altima, i purchased in 03 while driving the vehicle it would just stop. at one point while turning in front of heavy traffic car just quit, and every time i cranked it would quit, which could have caused major accident for me and my 5 year old daughter. i work very far from home and , to get on a busy freeway and car would just quit is not safe. i was under the impression nissan is a good car and reliable, but they have failed me. i was told by the dealership that due to 69,000 miles it would have problems. i have a friend with same 03 altima, and over 100,000 miles, she has no problems and can drive out of town. when i am driving up to speed the car would start stalling out of control, and then eventually just quit on me. i can not even drive my car out of town, due to the fact i can not drive in town it may not crank. i noticed the problem when i first got the vehicle, but don davis nissan said it was a recall on starter. i can say don davis nissan service dept. was very helpful, it did take them a few days to correct the problem, but they were very helpful and friendly. i missed many hours at work, and could not work because car was not dependable. the service dept. at don davis nissan assisted me well, i just received my car back and they said it was the crank shaft sensor inop. they have a recall on the 2002 but not the 2003, good thing i bought extra warranty, but i feel this is a problem and should not have been paid for thru my warranty, i think nissan should have taken care of it. i guess it's just the look of the vehicle, i will not purchase another altima again. *jb
My 2003 nissan altima stalled in the middle of a busy intersection. i had to have the car towed 85 miles, back to the nissan dealer in devon, pa. after several attempts to start the car, it finally started, but when i tried to drive it, it had no power when i pressed the accelerator. also, the car jumped all around, so it was impossible to drive it. i was away on vacation in nj, so i wasn't even near my home. dealer determined it was the 'crank sensor', and replaced it, but charged me $180. this should be a recall item! *nm
Car stalled, stopped working and then had difficulty starting. engine light stayed on. rough starting until fixed, with stalling. turned out to be crankcase sensor. the car involved is a 2003 nissan altima, and this was a recall item on the 2002 altima.
2003 nissan altima 2.5 stalled on the highway. car had been idling very rough and engine vibration as well as intermittent power loss 24 hours prior to issue. at time of failure, the power steering and brakes locked up while traveling at 70 mph on busy highway mountain pass. i was almost killed as car drifted with no control into other traffic. car was able to be restarted. took car to the dealership. the motor started shaking on drive back to dealership. dealer found that there was a screw loose. they found the screw missing had come from the power valve intake in the power valve. they had to the remove the exhaust manifold to get the screw out, the dealer had to replace the manifold intake/valve and cylinder #4/ 02 sensor/ the gasket exhaust/gasket adapter, and the gasket manifold as the screw had shot trough the engine destroying most of it. the dealership stated that there was a recall for this problem, but only on some 2004 and 2005 models, not my 2003. this problem is documented in other 2002 and 2003 models on this odi website and on internet forums as per my research. nissan north america refuses to address the problems in the 2002 and 2003 models as i have attempted to work with them in a reasonable manner. this is a potentially fatal issue as noted in different individuals experience the same problems with engines catching on fire or car stalling and locking up in traffic. interested in pursuing a class action lawsuit. odi has done nothing to make contact with me or open an investigation. problem started on september 24, 2005. *jb
1) the power valve screws located in the engine intake valve on my 2003 nissan altima 2.5s have started to come loose, causing power loss in the engine. one of the power valve screws actually came loose and was sucked into the engine, damaging the cylinders, thus ruining the engine. the exhaust manifold, o2 sensor and other components in the engine compartment have been damaged also. this has resulted in several thousand dollars worth of damage, anywhere between $1500 to $7500+ worth of damage. 2) the failure is that these power valve screws have come loose and started being sucked into the engine causing high dollar value damage to the vehicle. more important is that the loss of power and the destruction of the engine during driving almost caused a fatal crash that would have resulted in my death and the death of other individuals on the highway. additionally, exhaust is escaping the engine as a result of this problem because the power valve screw, after being sucked into the engine and causing damage, went into the exhaust manifold and cracked it. exhaust fumes were leaking from the crack in the exhaust manifold polluting the environment and causing me personal damage from the fumes and other complications. nissan north america is already aware of this exact issue in their 2004 and 2005 nissan altimas with the same engine as mine, which is the 2.5s engine. they are in the midst of conducting a service recall related to this issue. however, they are not addressing the issue in my 2003 nissan altima. 3) nissan has done nothing to correct this issue. my dealer, woodmen nissan of colorado springs has worked to communicate with nissan north america to make them aware of the issue and add the 2003 model to the recall. however, nissan north america has declined both my and the dealerships request to address this costly and seriously dangerous/fatal flaw in the automobile. *jb
2003 nissan altima - 2.5 liter engine: engine stalled without warning and the service engine soon light came on.the engine was diagnosed and the cause was failure of the crank position sensor. there was no warning before the engine stalled. the engine stalled approximately 8 times before i was able to correct the problem. the engine did not start right away after stalling'.the starter engaged for a lengthy period before the engine would start again. i did have some difficulty maneuvering the vehicle to a safe stop since the power steering doesn't work when the engine stalls. my wife had an even more difficult time due to strength differences.
While driving at all speeds vehicle just dies. consumer has not resolved this problem. *ts while driving the vehicle stalls unexpectedly. the vehicle has been taken to the dealer numerous times. the vehicle also hesitates intermittently. the transmission intermittently slips out of gear when the consumer was accelerating from a red light. *nm update: called the listed number but was told no one live there by that name.
Starting september 2005, my car "service engine soon" light began coming on and the car stalled several times at slow speeds. i took the car to the dealer 4 times and the problem has still not been solved. the car continues to stall at unpredictable times and the dealer and nissan's tech people have not been able to identify a problem. *nm phone interview update (feb 1, 06): the dealer replaced the throttle sensor and airflow meter under "secret warranty", but the engine still stalls intermittently. the dealer does not want to do anymore for me. in most cases, the engine restarts right the way, sometimes it takes 3 or 4 tries before the engine restarts.
Dt: the contact stated while driving vehicle it will completely shut down . once the vehicle shuts down the dash lights will illuminate. the consumer stated that once the vehicle stalled oncoming traffic did not know the vehicle stopped, and this could cause an accident. the service dealer could not duplicate the problem. but they did adjust the idle and suggested routine maintenance. the consumer took the vehicle to a service station to have the routine maintenance performed. this did not remedy the problem. *ak
Excessive oil consumption. i have a nissan altima with the 3.5 v6, there was a recall on the catalytic converter that when on the 03 altimas the engine would leak oil past the rings and damage the cat that would destroy the cat and then let the material go back into the motor and cause oil consumption. my car after telling the dealer last year, still uses a quart every week (roughly every 600 miles). the dealer told me that nissan consider this normal usage. i have tried over several times to get this matter resolved. all dealers and nissan would say, you are pass your power train warranty. now i see nissan has a campaign out about the 06 alimtas. why not extend the warranty on all altima. *jb
Dt: the contact owned a 2003 nissan altima . the engine failed, causing the power steering to lock while driving down the freeway. check engine light did come on before the engine died. consumer cited a recall #03v455000 concerning engine and engine cooling. this vehicle was doing the same thing, but was not includedin the recall due to vin. also, talked to the manufacturer. he has been having this problem for about one week. *ak
Car cuts off while driving. has cut off several times. nissan diagnostics test says nothing is wrong, but car continues to cut off. the vehicle is getting harder and harder to restart after the engine stalled out. once when making a left turn the engine stalled and almost got hit by an oncoming vehicle. there was a recall on an engine sensor for nissans manufactured 2000 to july 2002. my car was manufactured october 2002, and they will not consider that this could be the problem. a cam or crank position sensor was replaced to correct the stalling problem.
2003 nissan altima sl - my wife was driving down the street and came to a stop sign. when she came to a stop at the stop sign the engine cut off, but all electrical remined operating. she could not restart the engine. the car has been towed to a dealership to diagnose the problem. no clear answer has been determined for why the engine continues to shut off when the car is idling, even when driven by dealership mechanics. i just found a recall on your website for the circuit board for the crank position sensor on 2002 nissan altimas. the consequences listed in this recall are similar to the one i am experiencing. i am going to the dealership to have them check mine. could you please look into whether this cricuit board problem is also a problem with the 2003 nissan altima causing that car's engine to shut off while operating.
Dt the crank position sensor failed, and had to replace it. contacted nissan. there was a recall but for crank position sensors a month ago. this happened on 6-24-2005. *ak
Nissan altima's radiators need to be recalled. i have a 2003 v6 and i do every maintence possible. the radiator leaked and caused extensive engine damaged. i contacted nissan corporate office and noone seems to be concerned even though this happens quite frequently. i broke down on the innerstate and i could have been hit from the back by another car. the service manager jeff evans at hall nissan in newportnews, va 757 369-6600 says he had to replace a radiator in one altima three times. i don't know why no one has recalled this but i hope this message gets to as many people as possible. let everyone know that the new altima may look nice but that's about all it's worth. it's just eye candy and they obviously spent more time one the outside instead of what's most important "the inside". who wants to ride around in a car with their kids that is subject to break down? my car is still in the shop and it will cost my out of my pocket $2500. please research this and get this message to everyone it may affect. also i want to add that noone from nissan wanted to take responsibility for the repairs even though they are aware of the problem. i think they don't want to recall the part because they are too busy trying to sell the new 2005 model. thanks!
I brought a brand new 2003 nissan altima 3.5 from len stoler nissan. we noticed a light mist of smoke from the tailpipe in the summer time. i called to the dealer the dealer stated that was normal. the car started blowing light white smoke, the dealer stated change my gas to supreme octane. at just over 25,000 miles the car started blowing heavy white smoke, we heard a water sound under the car, the oil light would come and go off, and it started losing power. i took it in to the dealer they told us we had sludge in the engine. we turned in all service records showing that the maintenance was keep up on the car. the dealer and nissan manufacturer stated that sludge only comes from lack of maintenance and sludge do not come from nothing else and refused to honor the warranty. the dealer said for $700. they'll call the nissan rep. back out; look past the oil crank case opening and look in the bottom of the oil pan. i refused took it to nationwide nissan they opened my oil pan took my money, did not let me see when it was open just claimed my pan was full of sludge. they did take a picture, shared it with the other dealer, and told me the same thing but they also said that the nissan rep this time told them over the phone that nissan will not fix the car. where is the customer service? that shows how nissan sticks together! so what now? i know i will not buy another nissan and is telling everybody else also! these dealers/nissan will sell u a car but will not honor there warranty! *jb
2003 nissan altima engine cut off while driving and the consumer was unable to restart the engine.*mr while passing a vehicle on a 2 lane highway the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle's air flow meter was replaced. the consumer had to pay for repairs because the vehicle was no longer under warranty. *nm
After approximately 49,000 plus miles on my 2003 nissan altima, 3.5 se, i noticed oolant leaking from the radiator. i took it to the nissan dealership service department where i purchase the car from and i was told that the radiator needs to be replaced because it is not repairable. the dealership service personnel told me that the new type of radiators installed on these car models have plastic tops and once ruptured or damaged, cannot be repaired. i was just wondering how can this happen with my vehicle that has 49,000 plus miles in it. i had purchased the vehicle new. i was told the warranty for the radiator expired after 36,000 miles. i had the radiator replaced as suggested by the nissan service representative and had to pay a hefty price for a new one plus labor. *ak
Crank sensor failed, causing the engine to seize while driving. owner contacted the manufacturer, but has not received any assistance. *ak engine shut off and service light came on. the dealer determined that there was a crankshaft position sensor malfunction. the dealer replaced the crankshaft positioning sensor. *bf *nm
We purchased a 2003 nissan altima in january of 2005. after having the car approximately 2 months the car begin stalling while driving and it would happen periodically. we took the car back to the dealership and they stated that they couldn't find anything wrong with the car, this happen several times and with much boldness. we took the car back and demanded that the problem be found. because someone almost hit us and my children could have been seriously injured or killed due to neglect of nissan/datsun. they initially tried to give us the run around and stated that they couldn't find any problems, then after the tech, drove the car for approximately 40 miles the car stalled and they detected that it was a sensor and we had to pay for this. i know that nissan should be held responsible for this, because this is a manufacture defect. i believe that this is happening more than reported, i just found this site and i know that it would be a disservice to other people that might have this defect and have not had symptoms yet of this possibly fatal defect. thank god we were not harmed and no other drivers. *jb
2003 nissan altima exhaust leak positive for carbon d in my blood many problems with engine light coming on with the first year of owning my car it started with instructions on how to screw a gas cap on to after years of attempts trying to convince them it caused damage to my lymph nodes in my lungs when it was too late and they saw visible signs inside my car like black soot and a strong smell they laughed and said hey lady you have a leak they replaced the catalytic converter and the o2 sensor within 6-8 months i started to have symptoms again nausea, headaches, heavy legs, wheezing & inability to concentrate. then i knew once the smell started the damage was done i did not have the mental strength to fight with them about it anymore so i traded it in this week i kept all the reports from the dealer when i took it in but of course they did not type in all that i had concerns about. *jb
At about 60,850 mileage - 850 miles after the warranty expired, my car started to stall while in motion and the engine light came on. after doing a lot of research and an engine diagnostic test, it was found that the crank position sensor was faulty. i went on the internet and found that nissan had recalled 2002-2003 nissan altimas (alomst 75,000 of them) but only in canada. i need to know why they have not recalled these parts in america. this is a very serious situation. the car tends to shut off and lose all power while in motion. myself being a commuter to and from work on highways, this is very dangerous. after speaking to the dealership, they stated that nissan had put a bulletan out on this part stating that it was a common problem. again, please advise me why this serious situation has not been corrected in america.
On 01/13/05, the engine of my '03 nissan altima se stalled. thankfully, i was driving slowly on a residential street and was able to safely coast to the side of the road. i turned over the engine and it did not start. i waited a few moments and then tried again. the vehicle started but stalled again after i drove approx. 100 feet. the outside temperature was approx. 9 degrees fahrenheit but my vehicle's engine temperature gauge indicated the engine was warmed up. i waited in the car for approx. an hour in 9 degree temperature with my seven-year-old daughter until i was picked up by a family member. i had the vehicle towed to the nissan dealership where i purchased the vehicle. they were unable to determine the cause of the engine stalling. while my vehicle was in their possession, i had them conduct a 15,000k service (oil change, tire rotation, etc.). on 01/23/05, i heard an "engine knock" and discovered oil spots on my driveway from the car. i brought my car into the same dealership first thing the following morning. they inspected the vehicle and are telling me i need an entirely new engine. they are also claiming that it is not a manufacturers defect and therefore the engine replacement will not be covered under my warranty. at this point in the process, i believe the engine stalling was a safety procedure that indicated an engine problem. furthermore, i believe the failure of the dealership to identify, and repair, the problem may be the cause of the engine damage they are reporting. *nm
Engine failure on 2003 nissan altima. told by dealership that car was unsafe to drive. refuses to provide safe transportation alternative until car is repaired, under warranty. single female has already been left stranded on highway due to this problem.
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while the contact was driving approximately 35 mph, there was a loud noise outside of the vehicle and smoke emitted from the tailpipe. the vehicle unexpectedly stalled and was towed to the dealer. the crank shaft sensor was replaced. the failure continued three times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on six occasions for the identical failures. the repairs on the vehicle consisted of an engine tune up and replacement of the engine intake manifold. the vehicle was diagnosed by the dealer and independent mechanic in which they informed that the failure was contributed to internal defects within the engine. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 70,000. the vin was unavailable.
This is the 3rd time that my 2003 nissan altima shuts off completely as i a driving down the street at a speed of about 40-45 mph without any notice whatsoever. the 1st time this occurred was april 29th. i took the car into the dealer and they were not able to find anything wrong with the car. the dealer performed a diagnostic caled p0725 and p1229 and called the nissan tech line but still had no such luck. i am extremely concerned as i have had my 7 year old child with me in the car both times. luckily, i have not had a accident so far, but it is a very scary feeling when you are driving down the street with your child at a speed of 40-45 mph and your car just completely shuts off and all of the lights inside of your the dash of your vehicle start flashing (ie. service engine, oil, gas, lights, etc. *ak
I was driving my car and it shut down on me while i was driving during rush hour traffic. my brakes locked up and steering became hard. i was afraid for my life because i was close to causing a crash. i found out there was an issue with the sensors on nissan altimas, including mine. i called the dealership to speak to them on having the issue fixed. i was told by the mechanic in the service department (after pulling my car's information up) that there was no such recall on my car for the sensors. i'm looking on /www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov for recalls, and it's clearly listed on there according to my specific make and model. i ended up having to buy the parts and had to get the service done somewhere else. *tr
On december 14, 2003 consumer received nhtsa recall 03v084000, the exhaust pipe hanger pin may catch debris from the road that could be ignited. dealership still does not have the parts available to conduct recall repairs. *ak
In my new nissan altima 2003, the radiator has been replaced twice for developing a crack. the problem continues, but the dealer refuses to admit the radiator is defective and needs to be replaced again. they have many other customers having the same problem. *ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving 25 mph and below, the engine stalled. the vehicle would restart after ten minutes and the service engine warning light illuminated. the failure occurred intermittently. prior to the failure, the vehicle was serviced for nhtsa campaign id number 06v242000 (engine and engine cooling). the failure occurred more frequently after the ecm was reprogrammed. the crankshaft position sensor was replaced twice, but the failure still persists. the powertrain was unknown. the failure mileage was 25,000 and current mileage was 92,000.
Re: action number rq06001 manufacturer: nissan north america i have experienced all four problems with my 2003 altima that nissan north america cited as reasons for the recall of the defective part. service records document that the problem that my car would not crank was reported as early as 23,619 miles when i had to have my car towed in to the service department. since it was an ongoing problem, other records since that time reveal the same complaint. each time the service department reported that they could not locate the reason for the problem. the car was taken in recently because it began cutting off abruptly while traveling - an extremely dangerous situation. now that the warranty period is over, with over 60,000 miles, the service department notified me that the problem was in the crank position sensors and they both would have to be replaced. they also informed me that due to the mileage, it was my expense to have the problem corrected. i called nissan consumer affairs about the situation reminding them that the problem began before the warranty period was over and that i had read their information reported to nhtsa. i was told that my 2003 altima was not among those produced june 1, 2001 through june 30, 2002 and they would not pay to have the car repaired. obviously, my 2003 nissan altima is also one in which defective crank sensors were installed as evidenced by the on-going problems and the conclusive diagnosis given me by the service department. the cessation of the engine without warning while traveling the interstate "could" have cost my life. just as my car had a defective part creating these problems, there may be others like mine that should have been included in the recall. i notified the dealership on yesterday to repair my vehicle. i was told that this would involve replacing the two crank position sensors at a cost of $115 for the sensors and $225 for labor ($340) plus tax. i assume the old parts will be available. *nm
Service engine soon light came on, engine stop without warning while driving. this happened to me 3 times, fortunately i was not on the freeway. i know this is a part of the recall on all 2002 vehicles, recall day was nov 04 2003. my car is 2003 but i bought it on nov 15th 2003. nissan should do the recall on all 2003 also. i brought the car to nissan dealer, on the first service, they charged me for $872.73, i talk to the service director and showed him all the documents about the safety recall, he said my car is 2003, and also said this is a different problem. i said ok and paid the service by credit card. when i brought the car home, the car won't last longer than 24 hrs, this time i was driving on the freeway while exiting the freeway, i am very lucky i am still alive. the same problem that happened before i brought the car to dealer: service engine light came on, car stopped while driving without warning. this time the service director took care of the problem by fixing the problem that i showed him one day earlier: that is replace the crank position sensors, camshaft position, which all included in the recall on 2002, nhtsa campaign id number. the worst thing was the dealer tried to charge me for 2nd service that is almost $300.00, i'm so upset and bring up to the service director, he voided the charge but still charged me for the part = $37.84 includes tax. i'm in the process to work with my credit card to dispute about all the charge. *jb
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. in 2003, the vehicle began jerking and would come to a complete stop without warning. the vehicle was taken to two dealers and the radiator and crank sensor were replaced. the manufacturer was notified and a report was taken. the investigation concluded that the vehicle could not be replaced under the lemon law because the time had expired. the speed and powertrain were unknown. the current mileage was 55,000 and failure mileage was 7,435. updated 02/12/08. *lj the consumer stated the vehicle stalls and then shoots forward. updated 02/12/08 *tr
I have a 2003 nissan altima 2.5s and @ 3900 miles the radiator went bad , now @ 4800 miles the radiator is bad again. dealer is very unhelpful of situation and acts like they don,t want to fix.germaine nissan is 2 hours away from my home , only bought from them because i was told they were a respectable dealership.it puts almost 150 miles on my car to drive it up ther and back, and they say i don,t qualify for a loaner car.*ak
I got a 2003 nissan altima on 9/1/03. on the 10/10/03 it started stalling. i took it into the dealership. they said it was a damaged spark plug. the same thing happened the next day. i took it back. a butterfly valve had come loose and was lost somewhere in the engine. i was informed of two recalls, and i needed a new engine. nissan gave me a rental for 5 days, but i had to pay for anymore. it took 7 days to deliver the engine. i can not afford to rent a car, so i had to borrow my sister's car to get work. once it came one of the parts was wrong. they had problems with the catalogs, and the part was on a national back order. they would not agree to a rental. i called nissan myself. after waiting for 24 hours while they reviewed my file i was denied a rental because they didn't know how long i would be. the lady was very rude. i asked for a supervisor. i was told it would take 24-48 hours for them to return my call. i waited a week and called back. he told me that they should be calling me that day or the next. i have still never heard from them, and it is december 4 2003. i am just getting the run around from the nissan company. i have been getting phone calls from nissan telling me the part will be in a certain week, but still no part. on november 19th the dealership gave me a car, and then on november 20th they got nissan to give me a rental. so between october 25th until november 19th i have had to borrow a car from my sister. both of us commute, her to school, and me to work. i work the graveyard shift, so there is no public transportation. i am a nurse and am on call somedays. it makes it difficult to get there in a hurry, when you don't have a car. i have also had to miss out on the overtime hours, not to mention staff meetings. i have never been treated as rudely by a company as nissan has ...
The vehicle cranked up but would turn over. there was a recall (03v4555000) for the crank position sensor weld but the vin number was outside the remedy scope.
Engine noise (knock, clack or clatter) at idle. nissan america has published several bulletins/recalls/alerts regarding noise associated with the auto-tensioner, pre-catalyst and/or valves but the manufacturer and dealer now claim the "noise" is normal. also, the car still has a rattle in dome light that the insulation kit (tape) failed to fix. service manager stated rattle was not heard while driving the car for 10 miles but if the rattle could be duplicated at 40,000 miles he would repair. of course, i heard the knock and rattle while driving home from the dealership. unfortunately, the car only has 12,500 miles. the radiator was also replaced which is when i began noticing the knock. this is a sour deal! *veb. *nm
While driving vehicle would stall at any speed, causing consumer to lose control, and pull off the road. driver made contact with dealership on seven separate occasions, but problem still occurs. *ak consumer noted that since purchase there has been continuous problems with the vehicle, especially after a part in the engine was replaced. on morning while driving, the accelerator pedal stopped working. consumer was traveling next to the carpool lane hoping no one would hit the vehicle. *ph
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving approximately 65 mph, the engine failed without warning. the check engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer and they stated that the failure was related to the crank shaft sensor. the vehicle was repaired under warranty. on two separate occasions, the vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer for identical failures and repaired for the malfunctions. the vehicle was repaired for the crank position sensor recall, but the failure still persists. the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown. the failure mileage was 60,570 and current mileage was 222,000.
While driving at any speed vehicle shut down. dealer kept vehicle over four months and could no duplicate or correct the problem. *ak
I took the car to the dealer i bought the car from because is making a noise and when it's parked it's making a noise even more worse. of course as always the people i spoke to said that is normal. the noise that my car make is like if this was a diesel car. *la
