• Carburetor cleaner - it's always good to be prepared;
• Brush;
• Rag(s), not unlike those used for polishing silver;
• Screwdriver

A little spruce-up of the throttle valve is suggested roughly once every 75,000 miles (121,000 km). There isn't a strict timetable, in the same way, that one doesn't strictly need to iron one's socks, but a periodic cleaning of the throttle valve can only enhance the performance of your Nissan Altima. How, pray tell, does one clean the Nissan Altima's throttle body?

Adapting the Nissan Altima's throttle body, a conundrum for the ages

In the more contemporary Nissan Altimas, the throttle is governed by electronics, rather like a miniature robotic butler, actuated by an electronic pulse instead of the more pedestrian cable. A dedicated throttle position sensor keeps a watchful eye on the blade's position, holding it at a rather proper 90 degrees before the engine springs to life.

The blade finds its home perfectly against the walls, preventing an undue rush of air. But like dust settling on one's bookshelf, dirt accumulates on the walls or the blade itself. This unwelcome residue keeps the throttle from closing entirely, rendering it stuck, as if trapped in a polite conversation at a dinner party.

The blade's neutral stance becomes the computer's reference point, factoring in the accumulation of dirt, much like a layer of patina on a well-loved armchair. This is all above board, you see, and necessary to maintain the engine's working demeanor.

However, following a thorough cleaning of the throttle body, which leaves it looking as dapper as a freshly polished shoe, the Altima's computer may find itself rather perplexed.

Lacking any notification that the blade can close without impediment, it continues to operate as if the dirt were still present, maintaining the blade's position like a favorite old song.

This results in a gap, akin to an improperly hung door, allowing air to pass through. The car's computer may then fall into the illusion that the throttle pedal is constantly engaged, leading to more air rushing into the cylinders, like guests into a banquet hall.

This can be quite taxing on the engine, akin to running a marathon in a three-piece suit, resulting in an idle speed of 1500–2000 rpm instead of a leisurely 800. Overheating and a reduction in engine lifespan may follow, which is all rather inconvenient.

After such cleansing, it becomes paramount to recalibrate the blade to its factory setting, much like resetting a cherished grandfather clock.

The procedure, happily, is rather universal for many Nissan Altima models. Warm up the engine, wait a tick, then engage the ignition. The throttle pedal must be pressed with the rhythm of a waltz, five times for five seconds, and then released.

Should this not suffice, consult your Nissan Altima's owner's manual, where the throttle valve adaptation algorithm will be detailed, like instructions for an exquisite soufflé.
