How to Fix Nissan 370z Brake Light Fail - You Can Do It Yourself

The Nissan 370z is a vehicle known for its performance and design. But as with any vehicle, certain issues can arise over time, such as brake light failure. This guide is designed to help Nissan 370z owners diagnose and fix brake light issues with a do-it-yourself approach.

Diagnosing the Issue

Before diving into the repair, it's essential to diagnose the problem correctly. Start by checking the following:

  1. Fuses: Locate the driver's side foot panel and inspect the "Meter" and "Stop Lamp" fuses with an ohmmeter. Replace any blown fuses.
  2. Tail/Illumi Fuse: Also, check the "Tail/Illumi" fuse and replace if necessary.
  3. System Scan: If you have access to an Ecutek system or similar, run a system scan to check for any error codes that could shed light on the issue.
  4. Relays: Inspect the DTRL relay in the IPDM fuse box next to the battery. A malfunction here could cause the brake lights to fail.
  5. Bulbs: During some time, your brake light bulbs may burn out and stop emiting any light. Its a common issue so start with checking the condition of your bulbs. If you are not sure what bulbs to choose for a replacement - consult the chart below to find and answer.

  1. Locate the driver's side foot panel.
  2. Use the ohmmeter to test the "Meter" and "Stop Lamp" fuses.
  3. If you find a blown fuse, replace it with the correct amperage fuse.

Step 2: Advanced Diagnostics

  1. Run a system scan using an Ecutek system or a similar diagnostic tool to read any trouble codes from the BCM (Body Control Module) and IPDM (Intelligent Power Distribution Module).

Step 3: Relay Check

  1. Inspect the DTRL relay in the IPDM fuse box next to the battery. If unsure, consider replacing the relay as a process of elimination.

Helpful Tips

  • Be systematic in your approach, working from the simplest solution to more complex ones.
  • If your 370z has aftermarket parts or wiring, consider that they might be the source of the issue.

When to Seek Professional Help

If you've conducted all the steps above without success, it may be time to seek professional assistance.

A professional mechanic will have the tools and expertise to diagnose and repair complex electrical issues safely.

Remember, working with vehicle electronics can be tricky and, if done incorrectly, may lead to further issues. Always prioritize safety and consult with a professional if you are unsure about any step.
