2002 land rover freelander 61,000 miles - head gasket gone - overheating - no engines available. *tr

We currently have a landrover freelander that is on its third engine (within 1 year). we are continuously inconvenienced with this vehicle having issues that bring it back to the dealership they claim to fix the issue and within 3,000 miles we are back again like clockwork. landrover does know about this issue, and we have a vehicle that we could never sell to anyone else, purchased an extended warranty on, and have absolutely no recourse with. i brought the car in last week for them to fix an issue, service engine light was on and i was inhaling coolant fumes; they stated that it was fixed, no sooner than 4 hours after i picked the car up on friday afternoon, did the same check engine light go on and i currently am driving around inhaling fumes from coolant again. when do these issues get resolved. it has been over a year of the same issues with a car, that the sales woman's words to my husband were, the first vehicle created by landrover is still on the road. my car was purchased new, has approx. 57,600 miles on it, it is 5 years old, and for the last year and a has had nothing but issues. i asked the service manager how many of these models have had issues stated, more than he would like to admit. please let me know what can be done. at this point my husband would like the extended warranty money back and at least half of the book value of the vehicle. *tr

The engine started to overheat so i pulled over on the interstate and let engine cool, this continued until i was able to make it home. dealer now says that the engine needs a new heads and head gaskets. apparently this is a common problem on this vehicle. after locating this site i do believe that this is a defect in manufacturing. *tr

I have had many problems with my 2002 freelander. mainly related to engine over-heating which causes coolant to evaporate and also the coolant leaks into the engine. i mentioned this problem with the dealer when the vehicle was in warranty, but then they simply refused to take care of the core problem which is the engine. this engine over-heating resulted in spoiling the a/c blower and heater core, and also i was left stranded in the middle of no-where 4 times. and each time i had to tow the vehicle ($150 each time) and the only response from dealership was to keep adding more coolant. i am now out of warranty and not sure what do i do with this vehicle. i cannot use this to go anywhere (it can fail anytime), don't feel like cheating somebody selling this car. i am totally clueless and need help to the core issue resolved, which i think is engine. *tr

I have a 2002 landrover freelander. i just had a head gasket replaced at 80,000 miles. and now i think the transmission is going out. there are to many complaints on the land rovers for something not to be done. they need to be held responsible. these cars are not safe. *tr

My 2002 landrover freelander's engine failed at around 70,000 miles without any warning from the vehicles warning light system and just as the vehicle's original 5 year warranty ended. the dealers repair shop attributed the engine failure to overheating. due to the manufacture discontinuing manufacturing this engine's the dealer had to locate a "rebuilt" engine as a replacement. the total cost of the "rebuilt engine and labor was an astounding $7,500.00. due to the high incident of this particular engine failing and the manufacturer not making the engine any longer it took around 3 months to procure a replacement "rebuilt" engine and install it. also, the sunroof motor and the rear passenger window motor both failed and had to be replaced at a cost of around $1,200.00. my dealer recommended that i join a class action law suite if i could find one dealing with this vehicle's clear lemon qualities. i understand from other freelander owners the next thing to go will likely be the transmission. all of this leaves me with very little confidence in the vehicle's safety or reliability. i feel the out of pocket expenses for this engine replacement are unwarranted and should be the responsibility of the manufacture. on behalf of all freelander owners who have had to replace the engine of this car please issue a recall of the engine and force the manufacture to take responsibility for their failure to produce and/or use a sound piece of equipment in this vehicle. thank you. *tr

The car is just poorly designed and a disaster. despite our regular maintenance at manufacturer's dealers & at normal intervals, the car's engine & transmission failed. repair costs readily exceeded the value of the vehicle. all with less than 65,000 miles. land rover & ford were un-willing to assist in any way. we are out of the car and will not purchase lr or ford products in the future. *tr

Have had multiple problems with vehicle with replacements needed for the following items: sunroof assembly, brakes and rotors twice, coolant tank, coolant tank lid, intake manifold assembly, wiper switch, 2 vacuum hoses, window regulator, sunroof drain tubes and headliner. now, despite maintaining the recommended service schedule, we are going to have to have the engine replaced at 67k miles. the coolant is leaking into the oil and after having the head gaskets replaced and a cooler part replaced, the dealer now believes that there is a crack in the sleeve. there apparently is a back order on replacement engines so i will have to cough up $$$ to keep the oil drained and coolant filled until one is available. why should a $35,000 vehicle need an engine replaced at 67k miles? *tr

The engine/head gasket issue is the repair that is the most critical and terminal condition for the vehicle. the dealers mechanics will never fix the gasket, so they will only offer the engine replacement, but either repair will cost you more than the suv is worth. and yes, the brake pads and then rotors wear out very quickly, because of the weight of the vehicle (the dealer says). i personally think it has more to do with the fact that there are 2 disc front brakes and 2 drum rear brakes on the vehicle, hence the wear and weight all goes to the front of the vehicle. another poor design flaw issue, and i was told the drum brakes were there to better allow the off-roading. yeah, who ever could off road these things, they fall apart on the driveway! *tr

We had just had our car in for servicing prior to a longer drive. while we were driving at highway speeds, our car accelerated without warning. the engine "revved" without any increase in speed. once home, contacted our dealership where they proceeded to tell us that we would require a new transmission when we were only just out of warranty. they could not tell us what the cause of the problem was - only that it would cost upwards of $6000 to fix it by replacing the transmission. prior to this, our dealership had our land rover freelander for 4 weeks fixing other known problems such as the coolant system, again, just out of warranty for a fix of over $3000; once it was returned, the engine light came back on immediately (i.e. on our way home from picking the car up) - i returned immediately with the vehicle and was told that the engine block had been cracked which would require an additional $2000 plus in repairs (although they did discount us on this repair - more than likely because they had caused it). we have had nothing but difficulty with this vehicle. the issues began almost immediately from the date of purchase. additionally, the land rover service people are less than helpful. i believe they are deceptive, arrogant, and lack the knowledge and skill required to fully service a vehicle. i have gone through three different dealerships to locate someone whom i trust to service this vehicle; finally, now that the care is out of warranty we will be going to a local repair shop where they were able to walk me through what was wrong with the vehicle and fix the problem. *tr

2002 land rover freelander defective engine replacement *cw after taking the vehicle to the dealership, the consumer was informed the engine had a design flaw. the consumer was also informed it would cost$5,800, but the replacement engine also had a design flaw. the vehicle had a coolant leak. the first coolant leak was found during an inspection. the coolant overflow reservoir was replaced due to a crack in the plastic container. the second leak had to be performed due to the thermostat leaking. upon completion of the coolant leak repair, the technician noticed there was a knocking type noise in the engine. the consumer brought the vehicle back to the dealer and the noise had become louder. after listening to the motor and isolating the knocking noise, it was determined the noise was in the area of the #2 cylinder connecting rod deep into the engine block. a cause was never determined for the failure of the engine.

My coolant tank has leaked, my water tank has cracked. none of my safety lights flashed ever, so i drove without any knowledge of the problem and somehow destroyed the engine. apparently i need a new engine for a car that only has 65,000 miles on it, and the safety lights are not lit. *tr

I was driving to get dinner with my daughter and my landrover freelander just fell dead while driving. this incident could have been fatal if it had happened on the freeway. i had the car towed to my home less than 2 miles away and had a certified land rover mechanic come to inspect the vehicle. he informed me that the motor locked up for no apparent reason. the car was not low on oil, nor had it been overheating and there were no other liquids mixed in the oil. the only option going forward would be to have the entire engine replaced. this vehicle has had one mechanical failure after another and is not worth the money spent. *tr

We purchased a 2002 land rover freelander. the car has had numerous occasions of overheating, losing coolant and oil and we have now been told a new engine is needed. the car owner was also told at 50,756 miles that a new transmission was necessary. apparently land rover is aware of this recurring problem with this vehicle, but is doing nothing to correct the problems. there has been occasions when the car stops or overheat is causing potential safety concerns/problems for the car occupants as well as other drivers. *tr

Our well-maintained 2002 freelander had engine and transmission failure within 6 months of reaching 50,000 miles. in both cases the failures occurred during highway driving with no warning lights or indications of problems. in both cases the loss of power/control posed a serious health hazard to everyone in the car. one of these events occurred immediately following service and safety check by the dealer. this care is so badly designed that is a driving hazard and should be recalled in its entirety. the very extensive information on major failures without warning attest to the dangers that this vehicle is imposing on the public on a daily basis. *tr

I bought my 02 freelander in march 06 with my fema money. i desperately needed a car after mine flooded in katrina. since my purchase i have had nothing but trouble with this lemon. i see from the many blogs that i am not the only one. between me and my now expired warranty we've spent well over 5,000. please tell me if there is anything i can do. it has several problems now and is undrivable. i still owe over 7,000 on it. *tr

I have a land rover freeland that started having coolant leakage in early february of 2007. i tried to get the car in to get fixed and was put off by land rover until my warranty expired. they never fixed it. it leaks coolant constantly, it looses power, it over heats and steams, the coolant is an oily brown color no matter how many times i flush it. this car has a bad head gasket i'm afraid and i've read about and know many people with the exact same problem. i've replaced the reservoir bottle, flushed the coolant, replaced the thermostat and nothing fixes the problem. i had a month long battle with land rover to fix it and they refused. this entire engine needs to be recalled, this is a terrible car and a hazard on the road, i'm scared every time i see a freelander that it's going to blow something and kill someone on the freeway, land rover should be ashamed and all the cars should be recalled. *tr

Freelander 2002 has had many defects. the transmission failed at approx. 50k miles & was replaced. power windows failed. a/c hose cracked & repaired. manifold replaced. exterior brake lights have been replaced. electrical power to passenger door lock system have been replaced. now, at 70k miles the coolant leaking and engine knocking. not worth replacing engine at this point. this car has cost more to repair than what is was worth. it should be recalled as a lemon & law suit against land rover. *tr

Just before major odometer readings of 30000, 40000 etc vehicle loses power. the problem is elevated when the vehicle is turned off and started again. *nm

I have a landrover freelander 2002. i have had the car for a year. 2 months after getting the car it needed a head gasket with only 87,000 miles on it. from what i've heard mine lasted longer than most. i had to put 2000,00 into it right after putting 4000,00 as a down payment. the repair shop said that landrover recommended it get a new motor but the warranty comp. wouldn't cover it. a new motor cost about 7000,00. this is going on with hundreds of landrovers, because of the material the motor is made out of. i cant think of one good reason why there should not be a recall on this car. people are making payments on cars they cant even drive. we may be forced to do a voluntary repo so we can get another car. peoples lives are being destroyed because of this car. something has to be done. *tr

During the repair of our transmission, we began to get check engine lights. after the transmission was fixed, it was taken to the dealer for service. upon driving to the dealer, the car had no power. this became very difficult to drive and dangerous. trying to get up to the 65 mph speed limit on a freeway took almost 2 miles. i was also worried the car would stall in traffic due to this condition. the car was serviced and it was determined that the mass airflow sensor and the variable intake motors 1 and 2 had failed. the variable intake motors had failed 15,000 miles /12 months before and were replaced during the long block replacement. after all repairs were completed the car was taken home. the next day the check engine light came on. the following day i scheduled an appointment. during the drive to the dealer, the same power problems were present. this made driving this car dangerous in that there was no way to know if it would accelerate. the dealer then determined that the air intake manifold gasket had cracked. this too was a new part from the long block repair 15,000 miles /12 months prior. right now this repair is being performed. the land rover dealer acknowledges that these car should not be owned without any type of warranty due to the numerous problems. *jb

I have a 2002 landrover freelander. this vehicle has been nothing but problems. i bought the car back in late 2005 and it had 32k miles on it. in january of 2007 it was overheating and had a very loud sound to the engine. i took it into the shop and they told me that the engine went bad and needed to be replaced. during the time of the replacement the car only had 59k miles on it. now over year later the truck is overheating again and i have been told the engine is failing again. i have spend over 6,000 dollars on this suv that is clearly a lemon. *tr

In october of 2002 my husband and i purchased a 2002 freelander from landrover north dade of florida. the car was in the showroom with minimal miles. within three(3) days of purchase we returned the car because it shook violently after reaching a speed of 50 mph. i must admit the dealership advised us of some type of malfunction and offered us an exact replacement freelander. at that point we should have asked for a refund of our cash payment and left landrover alone. it has been a completely expensive nightmare diving this lemon with its myriad of problems: repeated overheating, loss of power without warning (often times resulting in close call situations, replaced brakes and rotor (lost count), not to mention an air conditioner unit that only works on full power(imagine that in florida). at present, the vehicle is at an authorized landrover repair shop because the warranty has ended. the landrover dealership has been negligent even rude when approached regarding all these mechanical defects. two weeks out of every two to three months, my young children and i are without transportation and at least $800.00 minimum, each time. most importantly however is my fear to drive the car at all, and to add insult to injury, we are offered $3000.00 by carmax when we attempted to sell them a car we purchased for over $30,000. with 73k miles. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 land rover freelander. while driving, the heat shut down inside the vehicle. the dealer stated that her heater coil failed. the contact took the vehicle to a different mechanic because it was out of warranty. the heater coil was repaired. approximately ten months later, the vehicle failed inspection. the mechanic performed a diagnostic but was unable to determine the cause of failure. as the inspection was being performed, the vehicle lost all power and would not restart. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who disassembled the engine and removed the head gasket. she left the vehicle at the dealer and a few days later, the dealer stated that the engine was completely dead. the dealer was unable to determine the cause of failure and stated that nothing could be done because the vehicle was out of warranty. the federal trade commission would not help either. the current and failure mileages were 61,034.

I had my car for less than a year when the radiator/check engine light went off. i brought it to the dealership and said the oil was leaking into the coolant (something like that.. i know nothing about cars). they had my car for a couple of weeks to fix the problem which i was told by their service manager at the time was a manufacturing problem with all land rover freelanders of 2002 and 2003. i browsed the internet for more information, and sure enough, my car wasn't the only one with this kind of problem. thankfully, when i had originally purchased the car, i had also purchases their extended warranty. but the warranty runs out in 2010, and i'm sure i'll continue to have this problem. i want to sell my car, but i can't justify selling a car that i know has so many problems. *tr

My 2002 land rover freelander began to overheat while i was commuting from ny to nj via holland tunnel. once out of the tunnel i pulled over to check under the hood. it was severely hot. i added coolant and waited approx 15 minutes before completing the 7 minute commute to my home. the next attempt to start the vehicle failed. i had the vehicle towed to land rover in paramus. the engine was burnt out and i had to have it replaced. *tr

My 2002 land rover freelander had an engine failure in september 2006. this is a common problem with this make of vehicle and cost me $6,849.61 to replace since i was out of warranty. other popular problems with this vehicle are problems with the window motors. my sunroof and two backdoor windows would not operate properly. i could only pay to repair the backdoor windows at the expense of $904.88. also, the drivers side door lock does not function properly, but i was not able to have that fixed. *tr

I purchased this suv with only 14,000 on it with the remaining factory warranty. at 21,000 the suv engine left me stranded on the interstate 2 hours from home. it had to be towed. land rover fixed it, $13,000 they found metal shavings in the engine at 21,000 miles. the warranty covered the engine, but they charged me $80 for an oil change~ you have to put new oil in a new engine~~but they made me pay for the oil! they navigation system screen went black and keeps going off, they said the warranty would pay for it, never heard back and the warranty is out last month. they fixed a recall on the carb the last oil change. the brakes ground down to the rotors, had to replace them at 20,000. new engine left me stranded in another state with my little girl in the middle of no where with no cell service. needed towed again. the anti-freeze hose had come loose from engine, caused it to shut down...had to fix, no warranty,car had 52,000 miles (2,000 over) last week i was taking my daughter to school and smelled gasoline very strongly, after having to idle in behind the buses in front of her school. with children walking by, and blocked in by another mom, it nearly exploded! the gas gauge had went down 1/2 tank, it started to smoke and nearly got fire. they said i was very lucky to have not been in a fire with my daughter. over 3/4 tank of gas had leaked out under the hood of the suv and if something would have sparked it, my daughter & i would not be here, and maybe not the children in front of the school standing by buses or on bus next to suv. they also found oil plug was leaking after land rover dealer changed oil at $80 and never put seal back on plug. almost burnt engine up again. right now it is sitting at repair shop, land rover accidentally sent them a wheel bearing last week instead of the part to fix gas leak, i have a rental car for over 1 week now. i have no idea how much the cost will be to get it fixed this time, i'm pretty much screwed. ...

I purchased a new 2002 freelander from land rover fort worth (tx) in january of 2002. while under warranty the car had numerous problems. my warranty expired in february of 2006 (4 years), but due to my low mileage 32,000 miles, i did not purchase an extended warranty. since february 2006, i have replaced the brakes for the 3rd time ($1000), had the engine overheat due to a faulty temp gauge which in turn blew the intake gasket ($1500), replaced the heater core again (pd. for by dealership), and am now faced with replacing the entire transmission ($5000). my transmission trouble began in early august 2006, when the car began to jerk and shudder unexpectedly. i immediately took the car into the dealership to check out the issue. they replaced the transmission temp sensor and said the care was fixed. i picked up the "fixed" car and 4 hours later the dangerous jumping/shuddering happened again. while attempting to drive the car back to the dealership, the problem grew worse and several warning lights lit up on the dash. i pulled over and the car was then flatbedded to the dealership. the next diagnosis was that an electronic computer chip (ecc) for the transmission needed to be replaced. the part was ordered and installed - but this did not fix the problem. the dealership now states that the entire transmission needs to be replaced for $5000. the car currently has 37,000 miles (highway and city miles only - no off-roading) and has been serviced on time and only at lr dealerships for routine maintenance. i find this entire situation unacceptable. *jb

My 2002 land rover freelander has experienced sluggish acceleration to a jolt and dowshifts on its own at freeway speed. about 2 weeks after buying it used i took it to a local repair shop and they said i needed a new transmission, had it towed back to the dealer and they said it didn't. needless to say they wouldn't replace it. it has a overheating problem which is continuous. the engine sounds like it has no oil in it, even after an oil change i have to check it to make sure because the noise is so loud. the hdc light comes on and the vehicle seems to drive in an almost 4wheel low at all times. there was antifreeze in my oil. this vehicle has major problems!!!!!!!! *tr

This is about transmission failure for 2002 landrover/freelander. keeping the car in best shape and maintaining on schedule, still the transmission went bad with less than 40,000 mileage. car warranty is for 50k or 4 years. unfortunately, the warranty was up in january 2006. engine has special noise and car is coming apart. window does not roll up and down, rear seat got stuck and wouldn't get its position. one problem after another, but the main one is the transmission. *jb

The 2002 land rovers freelanders have overheating problems and causes the engine to lock and cause accidents on the road. all freelander become lemon..the failures happen when the car turns 5ok miles. i found out that thousands of people who bought the same car have had this problem . and dealer won't even supply the parts to fix the problem. the freelanders were rip off and land rover dealership stop making after they found out that the car was a total disaster both for the company and they customers. but still no recalls ordered or service campaign is ordered to save the people who paid top dollar for a lemon. *tr
