Problems with 2002 Land Rover Freelander ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

I purchased this car less than a year ago. time for inspection and car has many problems looked on line at complaints and i am sick to see what i am in for with this car. its is sucking up coolant,(bad sign), head gasket ,oil in coolant, engine failure. why was i allowed to buy this car? do we have consumer protection? i purchase car from dealer that sold 85% land rovers. do you think they new what i was in for? yes!. you shouldn't allow cars to be sold in america if there is no actual fix for the car. i read that engine replacement is bad as original. will someone buy this car? i wouldn't want to be shady and tell someone this is a good car. *tr

I was driving the car away from my house and the engine died. it wouldn't restart and after about 2 minutes of trying, it started making a grinding noise. when i took it to a mechanic, he said it had blown the head gasket, then the piston rod had collapsed, so the engine was virtually ruined. the vehicle had 96,000 miles on it. land rover produced thousands of these vehicles with faulty engines(the 2.5 v-6). i also want to know if there is a class-action lawsuit filed against land rover and how to get involved with it. *tr

Both head gaskets are leaking coolant from all four corners. this is a common failure in this model caused by the cylinder sleeves coming loose. the sleeves contact the head gaskets causing them to leak. eventually the engine fails. there have been continuing coolant problems with this car since new. when it was a month old all the coolant disappeared. the dealer offered no explanation. since then the coolant reservoir and temperature sensor have been replaced. it has always leaked coolant.

1 numerous problems over several years, including (but not limited to) sudden loss of coolant and oil. and yesterday, a strong smell of hot oil, and sudden squealing from right, front wheel. 2 complete loss of engine power. vehicle is no longer drivable. 3 contacted landrover. *tr

I took my 2002 land rover freelander into land rover to be service because my transmission was slipping and the check engine light was on. they said it wasn't the transmission but it was the upper intake manifold, the vacuum hoses, and sensor that was causing the problem. so we had them replace the manifold, hoses and sensors. the service manager keep narrating that it wasn't the transmission. we picked up the car the next day again the service manager assist it wasn't the transmission and the car is running perfectly. as soon as i went about 2 miles my transmission started slipping. i took the car back to land rover the next day irritated. the car spent 5 days at the shop trying to find out the problem. which was indeed the transmission, they didn't offer to fix the transmission but to refund the money and put the old parts back in. which we agree to unless they guarantee it would be in the same condition. it was making more noise then before, 2 weeks later the timing belt broke. this car is a lemon. its doesn't make since how the engine, the timing belt, the transmission, and the upper intake manifold all fell at once. the car is not running and stuck in my drive way. *tr

I bought a 2002 land rover freelander hse with 92,000mi, about 6 months ago, few months after this the check engine light started flashing, so i took it to the repair shop, it turned out to be the thermostat and some related parts, i ended up paying 600 dollars. then a week after that my transmission felt weird and showed a code in f-4 in the dashboard so i took it to the repair shop and it turns out it is a solenoid, the repair cost will be about another 300 dlls. *tr

Engine issues. replaced vacuum hose to 6th cylinder. also, the timing belt is making noise and the mechanic has advised i will need a new engine. the car only has 68,850 miles. also, have repaired the brakes on five occasions and they still squeak. had to repair the window regulator. the srs light and engine service light is on. *tr

I owned a 2002 land over freelander, since 2006. it has been having engine problem 12 months after purchasing. i have contacted and interviewed other consumers with the same vehicle and issues. when i contacted land rover, they refused to do anything about it. the engine first over heats, it then has a cackling sound in the head, the service engine sign is always on. when i take it to the dealers for diagnostics, one employee said that these model vehicles come in for this problem very often. the vehicle was estimated to cost me over $5,000 to repair. this was not feasible being that there was a $70,000 payment left on the car. i had to turn it in to the bank but still stuck with a payment on a car that i can't even drive and was manufacturer's and dealers defect. *tr

My husband and i purchased a 2002 freelander type s with around 60,000 miles on it. after owning it for less then a week it started overheating. each time it would start to overheat, it would require us to immediately pull off the road to prevent the engine block from cracking. i took it into the landrover dealer to find out what the problem could and was told that the cylinder sleeve was slipping causing coolant to leak into the engine and mix with oil and will eventually cause the engine to freeze. the only remedy for this problem was to replace the engine at the cost of 12,000 dollars and that does not include labor costs. after reading quite a few complaints this seems to be the number one problem with this vehicle. landrover should be at fault and should recall the faulty parts in the engine! *tr

We purchased a 2002 landrover freelander with 71,000. regular maintenance had been performed on car by original owner and we continued it. in the first 2 year of ownership we had to replace the waterpump twice at $ 1,100 and $565. there was a recall on fuel filter after i had it replaced due to breaking down. now, my wife was driving it and it broken down on side of highway with my 2 year old daughter from almost 2 hours. shop called said needs new engine because block is made of alloy and cylinder sleeve made of steel. when they get hot expand at different rates. after a while this cause the sleeve to drop into lower block and the engine has to be replaced. it cannot be rebuilt. this cost at least $4,000 for engine plus repair. do a internet search and see all complaints about this engine. most go out between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. please do something about this and not let landrover get away with taking advantage of us citizen. *tr

2002 land rover freelander. engine replaced at 56,000 miles, it is once again in shop for engine problems at 79,000 miles. fuel pump replaced at 70,000 miles. 5-6 batteries have been replaced since owned car in 2005 and no one knows problem. this car has been in the shop at least 10 times for extended lengths since i've owned it. i have kept up with all oil changes and have taken very good care of this car. everytime i research it, i find nothing but complaints a mile long. i believe there to be a serious problem with this car, and think that something should be done for the unfortunate owners of them. *tr

At less than 40,000 miles i needed to have my transmission replaced and less than 50,000 i needed to have the engine replaced because of a headgasket problem. also many other problems with the vehicle but these were the major ones. *tr

Bought the car used 2002 freelander land rover v6 and drove it. day four heard a loose bolt sound, it went away. later that day driving home with children in the car, it died on the freeway, no warning lights, no warning at all, just died. turns out the timing belt broke and broke the valves and now they want to replace the entire engine. i paid 4k for the car and it will cost 6k to repair. this car is dangerous. we had to move over 3 highway lanes with no power and sit on the side of the road for 1.5 hours to be towed. i had my children in the car with me, this was very very scary! *tr

My 2002 land rover freelander was having cooling leak problems starting at 50,000 miles. it was found that the leaks were caused by brittle heater lines and brittle universal heater joints made out of plastic. the lines failed catastrophically. the lines and joints were replaced costing $50. at 58,000 mi the thermostat had to be replaced because the coolant leak still existed and was leaking from this location. cost of repair at dealer $1100. at 59,828 mi the engine failed catastrophically. the cause of the engine failure is due to the cylinder liner (sleeve) slipping causing a gap which caused the coolant leak into the engine block. the engine required total replacement. there is no recall against this known problem. land rover's stance is that they only guarantee the vehicle for 50,000 mi, so they are not responsible for the engine failure. cost of replacement of the engine is $15,000 as quoted from the land rover dealer. total consumption of coolant was at a rate of 1 gallon per week, with the exception of the catastrophic failure of the heater lines and universal joints. *tr

Many land rover freelanders are having serious problems due to the faulty construction of the engine. prior to complete engine failure, there may be unexplained coolant loss, overheating, and other problems related to head gasket failure. because the cylinder liners are steel and the block is alloy, the cylinder liners tend to work their way into the block. when this happens, there is no way to repair the vehicle short of engine replacement, and many of the replacement engines have the same construction defect as the original vehicle. *tr

My landrover freelander broke down suddenly while driving on the garden state parkway. no warning lights were lit, the gauges were fine, etc. the car stalled while at 65 mph. after taking it to the shop, the car needs a new engine at only 65,000 miles. *tr

I have a 2002 land rover freelander. the car is more trouble than its worth. from the truck not starting, windows rolling up and down when they feel like it, engine coolant leaking, intake manifold problems, misdiagnosed from landrover, the locks don't work. the car basically starts when it wants to, it doesn't need a new starter, or spark plugs or an alternator. when driving the car wont accelerate as a car should it rides bumpy as if the engine is about to drop out. land rover wont help with anything because they say that the company who made the engines for the truck went out of business. many people complain about this truck. when i took the car to land rover to see what the ticking noise under the hood was they charged me 200 for a diagnostic and diagnosed the problem wrong. the major problems are the windows rolling down, that's a safety hazard when you have people in the car and have the window lock on yet the window still rolls down. the coolant leaking because once a land rover engine overheats you have to replace the whole engine. the locks don't work meaning you cant lock the vehicle also a safety hazard and the car doesn't accelerate past 30 mph sometimes and its not the transmission. *tr

My car was overheating, had $1200 worth of repairs; now they are telling me it needs a new engine for $9000. through the internet i have learned how many complaints there are with the 2002 land rover freelander - basically, after 70,000 miles it needs a new engine, this will be followed with a new transmission. my car has 75,000 miles and is sitting at the dealer, land rover "volunteered" to pay 20-percent; the land rover dealer "volunteered" to pay 20-percent...leaving me with 60-percent. they are aware of the problem - and will not do the right thing. *tr

I have a 2002 freelander that i bought new in 2002. i have had nothing but problems with it. most recently the truck was undriveable for several months at the beginning of 2008 due to overheating. finally saved enough money to take it and have it repaired. have driven it for 5 months and am again losing coolant. have paid several thousand dollars for repairs due to overheating and other issues over the last year. now, the right rear passenger window motor is dead. like many others who own these vehicles, the transmission had to be replaced. there are clunking noises when it is put in gear. there is an electrical gremlin that makes the rear window go up and down for no reason. i have had the sunroof stuck open and had that fixed. the motor was tapping constantly and the dealer told me the sound was normal. an independent mechanic repaired the tapping noise which was the intake manifold. my truck has been out of warranty and i'm out of money. *tr

Bought a 2002 land rover freelander used a little over a year ago with under 55,000 miles. just got it back yesterday from the shop with an estimated repair cost of over $10000.00 and that is just in parts not labor. did some research on the vehicle and come to find out others have had the same problems with less mileage on there vehicles and there have been absolutely no recalls on this vehicle that include any of these problems. the worst of which being the engine leaking antifreeze into the oil. this could cause the motor to overheat and seize and lock up. who knows what kind of damage or what kind of accident this could have caused if this had happened to the vehicle when my wife was driving to work . we lucked out and discovered the problems before my wife, myself or anyone else got hurt. there are major problems with these vehicles and landrover should be held responsible. *tr

I began experiencing reasonably significant loss of coolant over the last few months. i monitored and refilled every time i saw the level below the minimum level in the overflow tank. over the last couple weeks i have began noticing what appeared to be solidified oil in the oil cap and am growing very worried that i am heading down the same path that so many 2002 land rover freelander owners have experienced. coolant is clearly leaking into the engine, is mixing with the oil and is in very short order destroying my engine. with 100's of reports of this very same issue it's obvious land rover is aware of the problem and based on the best information i can gather has no solution. they apparently don't even have replacement engines available as the model was discontinued. this makes repair completely impossible. i still owe several thousand on the vehicle. given the accounts of many whose engines have seized while driving i am fearful of driving it. the negative impact of the widespread knowledge of this issue, bad pr, has devalued my freelander to the point that it cannot be sold for what it's supposed to be valued at. i own a vehicle from land rover that does not deserve to be on the streets. to repair it is apparently impossible. selling it can only be done at an extreme financial loss. the issue is a known manufacturing flaw. i believe it's time the dot stepped up and pulled these cars off the street before something very bad happens and holds land rover responsible by compensating all freelander owners for their manufacture of a very, very flawed vehicle. please take action and help take an unsafe vehicle off us roads. *tr

The 2002 land rover freelander has been nothing but trouble since i purchased it in 2005. it has always had problems with overheating, when i talked to the dealership about it, they told me the freelander burnt through coolant faster than most cars. i did not think it was normal for it to burn through a gallon of coolant every 3-4 weeks. this has continued since then. until now, my freelander"s timing belt broke ( at 60,800) well before recommended changing of the belt and has essentially totaled my car. since it will cost me a minimum of $4,500 to fix it. I was driving on i45 on my way to work, when my 2002 land rover freelander stopped working without any notice. i had to quickly do anything i could to ge out off the freeway with no power. it was one of the scariest days of my life. thankfully the other drivers noticed that there was something wrong with the car and slowed and i was able to exit. i had to get the car towed to a shop where they told me that i needed a new fuel pump. i got it replaced and it worked well for 2 month and now its leaking fuel. the motor is also leaking antifreeze all over the place. you need to look into this cars. there's to many problems with it and complaints to go along. thanks *tr

problem started out with engine oil leaking into engine cooling system on or about september 15, 2008. engine coolant leaked from system, causing vehicle to overheat and stall in traffic. root cause of failure still to be determined. vehicle is now out of service. *tr

After several incidents with my 2002 land rover freelander type s overheating, i took it to my local land rover dealer to find out the problem. the coolant was found to be low, and a discussion with the mechanic and the shop person indicated that their is no external leaks, and that the coolant may be leaking into the engine. i was told that the cylinders/heads are made of different materials, and that a gap may have formed there causing the coolant to leak into the engine. i was told that if the coolant continues to leak without any visible signs of external problems, the engine would need to be replaced. i have 57,500 original miles on this vehicle, and all required maintenance has been done. it is now out of manufactures warranty, and i do not have an extended warranty. i have seen thousands of postings on the internet relating to this problem, with models from 2000 to 2005, the years the car was available in the us. it appears that there are no viable replacement engines available that do not have this same problem since, the vehicle was discontinued in 2005. based on the information i have gathered, it appears that the engine used in this vehicle was of a faulty design, given the fact that a replacement with out this problem is not available for the record, my vehicle info is as follows: make: land rover model: freelander type s year: 2002 purchase date: 07/12/2002 i am the original owner, and i purchased this from a land rover dealer in simsbury, ct. *tr

I only have 65,xxx miles on my 2002 freelander and it now needs a new engine-somehow there is oil in my coolant tank? the dealer told me that it needs to go away. i still owe on this car-talk about upside down in a loan. *tr

My 2002 landrover freelander has spent more time in the mechanic shop than it has spent in my driveway! before the warranty expired, i took it into the encino dealership several times with the same problem. the last time i had it towed there, the car had just dumped all of its fluids onto the floor and was smoking again. this keeps happening over and over and over. dealership said they checked and the car was fine. warranty expired and problem continued to occur. took it to another mechanic and was told there is a major problem with the transmission -- must be replaced. also having problems with the coolant leaking--have tried to fix the issue several times--still have same problem. mechanic discovered a crack in the engine. if this is starting to sound familiar it is because there are several different forums online with 2002 freelander owners all saying the same thing! what is being done about this???!!!! the repairs were extremely costly for me as a college student and now as a mother of a newborn i am terrified to drive the car for fear of something serious happening! i have even been told by mechanics and even the service manager at the pasadena landrover dealership that landrover is aware of the problems and warned me it is a lemon! i have been calling landrover's corporate offices for weeks and am still waiting for some kind of answer... *tr

We bought the freelander 2002 in april of 2002. brand new. started to have break problems and alarm system problems, along with constant air coolant/broken air conditioning problems that we had to take the car in for repairs. the transmission broke down in 2006 at approximately 30,000 miles. the dealer haggled with us because the warranty had just expired two months earlier! we ended up paying approximately $2,000 towards a new transmission that we now discover has been an ongoing problem for land rover freelanders. then, as i was driving my car a few days ago to be serviced, the car started to overheat. i had to have the car towed to the dealer and we are now told that the engine has broken down and that we are going to have to pay several thousand dollars to have the engine replaced. we told the dealer that the engine has had well documented defect issues from manufacture and that the innocent consumer should not have to pay for a manufacturing defect. our car is now undrivable and only has 37,000 miles on it. we are being told that. *tr

We were hearing a loud noise and had no idea what it was. as it turns out we were first told that it needed a new engine, however after careful diagnostics we were finally told that it needs a new intake manifold. this is about $2200. that includes labor costs and part. i have no money and the car just sits in the front of my house and is not drivable at all. i still owe so much on this car and have no idea what to do.... *tr

This car had only 61000 miles on it and needed a new engine. coolant leaked into engine just 3 weeks after i paid $2k for work on the coolant system (reservoir, hoses) and a plenum valve replacement to address the same problem it was then experiencing (overheating and engine revving). dealer said a piston sleeve had slipped. full engine replacement required. this car has received all of its recommended service appointments and had a new transmission at 50k miles. *tr

We purchased a 02 freelander by land rover and it has turned out to be a lemon. repairs after repairs. it overheats and when it does it overheats the starter causing it to fail as well if it overheats too much it causes the head gaskets to blow or a crack on the engine. *tr

Since i purchased my 2002 landrover freelander in aug of 2007 with 63456 miles on it, i have taken it in for numerous costly repairs. the first being 12 days after the purchase in attempt to fix what i thought was causing the disappearance of my coolant, the cracked coolant reservoir was replaced, only to find out to the engine would continually overheat and i would become stranded on the road on at least 3 occasions even after i had taken it in by this point and had it suction tested to see if a leak could be located with in the coolant system and was told it passed. so i continued to operate the vehicle shuttling myself to and from school and work, stocking my vehicle with necessary coolant to maintain the proper level. after a traumatic incident on the freeway in i june 2008, where i was forced to quickly pull to the shoulder going form 60 to zero while still in traffic, i took the car in to have it serviced again where i soon found out the coolant contaminated the oil because of the seal slipping (through research of my own i have learned the material the seal is made of is in adequate to hold high temperatures for even a reasonable life of the car). unable to afford the costly replacement of the engine which was advised at this time, 6/08 (over the worth of the vehicle at $7,579 + taxes new and with multiple research attempts done to find a used one with no success because it's such a common problem with these models) i bought some time with an engine flush only to have the internal damage the seal failure had caused result in the complete seizure of my engine as of 1/09. i have been put in harms way in near misses of causing an accident as i uncontrollably come to a stop and soon after sit helplessly on the side of the road through no fault of my own, countless times do to the manufactures negligence for the safety of the operator. even after this whole ordeal, i still find myself fortunate to only be out a costly vehicle and not the loss of my life. *tr

After buying the car used @ 42,000 miles my 2002 land rover freelander was immediately diagnosed a month after intermittent starting problems with a blown head gasket and i needed a new engine. my car is a safety hazard as it stopped randomly of a highway and left me stranded. i am not the only person experiencing this blown head gasket problem as it is an engineering failure of this suv. land rover will not help, this is a disgrace that so many people have suffered from this problem and nothing has been done. *tr

We bought a land rover freelander 9 months ago from a used car dealership. 2 weeks ago we noticed the heating gage going up and down and we needed a lot of coolant. yesterday, the engine failed and we were told we need a new engine. according to the mechanic it was a problem in the heating system because the coolant is leaking into an unknown area. landrover says since we didn't buy it from them, they will not help us. in order to file a complaint, we must tow the car to the dealership, pay the dealership to examine the care and then want 2 to 6 months for an engine, possibly a transmission as well to be order. they are backordered nation wide. the car has on 40,000 miles and has had good maintenance regularly. *tr

Check engine light , ticking engine, antifreeze , oil leak, smelling coolant inside car and numerous other issues such as window regulator , wiper motor and rattling noises underneath car has been my complaints since feb 13,2008. parts were replaced that didn't correct the problem of the ticking engine, coolant leaks, smell of coolant inside car,and check engine light which always comes on a couple of hours after the dealer returns my car to me. car was towed from freeway due to breakdown on the way home 15 minutes after picking car up from madison dealership for engine repair. dealership stated that this was due to an oil seal/oil plug and it was not their fault although they just finished working on the engine. i did not have my car for a total of 30 days not including the prior visits where they took almost 2 weeks to diagnose the problem. i was charged for a rental car during this period. milwaukee dealership claimed they corrected the engine problem on 3 different visits which i paid $600.00 for a timing belt which never corrected the problem along with a $100.00 deductible for using the warranty. the parts replaced on the vehicle is as follows; manifold assy. motor assy for wiper blades,window regulator,timing belt and differential front mounting which did not resolve rattling noise underneath car. milwaukee dealership has also attempted to correct these same problems with no success. the coolant leak is still apparent and the check engine light is on again. the only thing the dealership can tell me is to monitor how many times i have to replace coolant. in the mean time, they have sent me home with a car that has a check engine light on and a disappearing coolant problem. i guess they will continue giving me the runaround until my warranty expires aug 2,2008 just as many others has reported they did to them. please help!!!!! *tr
