We have classified the 90 complaints from 2012 Kia Soul about STEERING into the following categories.
I am shy of hitting 80k miles on my soul 79795 to be exact. i have noticed that within the past couple of weeks my steering wheel has been 'clicking' whether in a stationary position or in motion. how is there no recall or tsb on this as i have been doing my research and there are numerous vehicles with this issue! this is an accident waiting to happen!! i have yet to take it to the dealership but to top it off the warranty is out. local mechanics will not attempt to touch it! someone please start a recall or a tsb!
Knocking sound when turning steering wheel slightly to either left or right. i was told it is a bad coupler within the steering column that needs to be replaced and it will probably become a recall because the dealership has had many customers with the same issue.
Steering noise caused be a bad piece in steering linkage. plastic piece which makes steering loose and possible loss of steering. kia admitted to me it's a problem which is common. but not covered by warranty after 50.00 miles. this is a safety issue and they are aware of it. it demands a recall for safety reasons. it also is on hyundi products. safety issue! factory aware of danger! recall mandated!
Clicking in steering when driving or sitting still.
My steering is clunky and has a lot of movement-play i took it to my dealer and he told me i have to replace parts for my car is out of warranty but with after researching this i would assume that kia would have recalled this as it is a dangerous function to go wrong
Upon driving there is a clanking noise coming from steering wheel advise by mechanic that he was aware of this noise and that to contact kia as there was a recall looked up and advised by kia no. afraid to drive car as it sounds that the steering wheel is going to come off
About three weeks ago, while sitting in the car letting it warm up and while driving on the city streets i heard a cluncking sound in the sterering column when turing left and right and the sound is present currently. i am afraid the steering wheel will lock up or come off while i am driving!
Steering is loose and makes clunk sound. called kia and said no recalls????? out of warranty. this is a accident waiting to happen.
Dashboard lights came on and car wouldn't start. had car towed to kia of bowie md., who did a diagnostic and replaced electrical panel which cost estimated $200.00 dollars including diagnostic. kia of bowie never called and when i finally contacted someone a week later, they stated the steering column was out and would cost approximate $2000.00 and that's the part. car has only 70.000 miles.
Flexible coupling is damaged, steering wheel noisy, rattling noise, worry about safety steering might not work and cause accident or death due to malfunction. went to dealership and told me it would cost $200.00 and it is likely that it would do it again. very disappointed with kia vehicles , definitely would never buy a kia vehicle again.
The steering wheel makes a clunking noise. i noticed there have been recalls issued for the steering but not yet for the 2012. don't you think this is also a problem? i am very afraid to drive it like this. the noise happens when the car is parked and on and also when driving, and has a lot of "play" in the wheel when moving! please help!!
Steering wheel loose and clicking while driving. felt loose while stationery. local auto shop replaced mdps flex coupling. it was totally worn out. car had less than 37,000 miles. apparently 2014 vehicles were recalled for this.
Steering column making popping sound. has some play. is same description as those file for the 2013vto 2015 model year where the yoke nut is loose allowing the rack and pinion to seperate. happens both during stationary and motion movement of the vehicle
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 kia soul. while driving 35 mph, the steering wheel shook. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to crown kia (5500 34th st n, st petersburg, fl 33714 (727) 525-5785). the cause of the failure was waiting to be determined. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000.
The steering wheel is loose with much "play" in steering and a clicking noise from the steering lock. this happens both stationary with the car on in park and when driving. the vehicle shakes when braking. i do not have full control over the steering. when i brake at speeds over about 30mph. i have had alignment done and suspension checked and it is not apparently the issue. i now have a loud rubbing noise coming from the steering wheel when i turn left or right. the clicking and looseness and rubbing noise is present when the car is idle or being driven in city or highway.
2012 kia soul with 20,000 miles: steering makes a clunking noise and has a lot of play in it. even when sitting still, the steering wheel makes a clunking noise and has too much play. when driving it also has play and makes clunking noise. other kia souls have recalls, this year should also.
Around 60,000 miles i began to notice a clunking noise in the steering column. it started out minimal, only happening slightly when i would turn the wheel (this was both when the car was stationary and in motion). it has progressively become worse and now on top of the clunking noise when turning, my wheel shakes violently when i reach a speed of 70 mph.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 kia soul. the contact stated that there had been several failures that progressed since purchasing the vehicle. the radio shorted out and was replaced by the dealer (southside kia, 9401 atlantic blvd, jacksonville, fl 32225, (904) 400-6650). also, the odometer displayed an improper reading and the steering column was extremely tight, making abnormal noises. in addition, the steering wheel was difficult to turn left or right. the vehicle was taken to the dealer more than three times, but the radio failed again and the driver's seat belt failed to properly restrain. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it currently remains for service. the manufacturer was notified of the failures and indicated that they would provide a follow-up response. the contact received no solution yet from the manufacturer. the approximate failure mileage was 68,000.
Took a left turn and the car made a clank noise. now when you turn the steering wheel there is this clanking noise when you turn the wheel left and my steering wheel feels really loose. the wheel can turn some before the car starts turning. kia recalled 2014 and 2015 for this problem. people were losing control and crashing. i am paying for this car and can't afford to park it but i am afraid i will loose my steering. why isn't all of the souls being recalled? i have seen where there are 10 steering complaints. isn't one to many? especially since the 2014-2015s had these problems. why didn't they go back farther?
I own a 2012 kia soul. i know a recall was issued for a steering problem for 2013-15. my car has the same problem. there was a pop and my steering is loose. we called kia and they told me i have to pay to get it fixed. it has been proven that there is a problem with the steering system on their cars. mine now has it. it should be fixed at their expense like they did the others. the car was being driven when the pop happened and there is a lot of play in the steering. we have hardly been driving the car because we are afraid. the problem is really bad if you try to turn it to the left.
The steering wheel became loose with much "play" in steering and a clicking noise from the steering lock. this happens both stationary with the car on in park and when driving. i have had alignment and suspension checked and it is not apparently the issue. apparently the steering shaft becomes loose where it is coupled with the steering gear/rack. this loose steering is very dangerous as when steering around curves the car steering actually pulls on the road so i now go much slower around curves than is posted on speed signs to avoid loosing control of my vehicle. when i go over uneven roads or bumps the car also shifts and pulls as i do not have full control over the steering. when i brake at speeds over about 40mph i notice that there is also this same play in the steering so i make sure i am considerably a far distance behind another vehicle in order to stop slowly. i feel that this is a very dangerous problem with the 2012 kia soul and have noticed upon researching online that the kia optima has a similar problem which was eventually recalled for repair. i have contacted kia customer service as well as my kia dealer with this complaint and was told that since my car was over the warranty miles there was nothing they could do regarding repairs.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 kia soul. while driving various speeds, an abnormal noise was heard coming from the steering column and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to west palm beach kia (735 s military trail, west palm beach, fl), but was not diagnosed or repaired since there were no recalls attributed to the vin. the manufacturer was notified, confirmed that there were no recalls, and documented the failures. the failure mileage was approximately 74,751. *tt
Steering wheel / column loose and locks up while driving on highway. almost caused an accident. apparently this is a historical problem with the kia soul as previous documentation/complaints to nhtsa and kia. waiting to see what coral springs kia will do to fix their problem under warranty. 31,000 miles on vehicle 2012 kia soul.
My steering wheel makes a clunking noise, and you can feel it. i am taking it to be fixed, but i noticed a recall for the same issue that does not include my model year. should it though?
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 kia soul. the contact stated that the steering column made an abnormal noise and was not operable. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering column and gear needed to be replaced. it was unknown if the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 65,000. the vin was not provided.
The steering column makes a clunking noise when being turned, while stationary or moving. 90,000 miles on car, afraid the steering may give out... has been getting progressively worse since initial clunking began at about 70,000 miles
Tl* the contact owned a 2012 kia soul. while driving at an unknown speed, a vehicle in front depressed the brakes abruptly causing the driver to crash into the rear of the preceding vehicle. as a result, the driver merged onto oncoming traffic and crashed into two other vehicles. the driver was fatally injured. the driver of the first vehicle that was impacted also sustained fatal injuries. the front passenger in the first vehicle sustained shock trauma and the child seated in the rear sustained unknown injuries. there were two injuries in the second vehicle. all injured occupants required medical attention. a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to an impound lot where it currently was pending an inspection to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was deemed destroyed. prior to the crashes, the front passenger side tire blew out. the dealer diagnosed that the tire needed to be replaced and it possibly encountered an object in the road, which caused the blow out. the front passenger side tire was replaced. prior to the failure, the contact took the vehicle to a dealer where the front passenger side tire was replaced. after retrieving the vehicle, the steering wheel felt abnormal. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 50,000.
Clicking in the steerling wheel. pulling and jiggling (no it's not the alignment)
The steering wheel is very loose and makes a grinding noise.
Steering is making a banging noise and seems to be getting loose. getting worse by the day. this is most profound when vehicle is standing still and you turn steering wheel slightly from left to right.
Defective steering flexible coupler. caused my steering wheel to loosen up.
The steering column "clunks" when turned and when driven on uneven roads. it was taken in for repairs but i was told there is nothing wrong with the steering column. also had to replace the passenger cv joint mount.
The steering became very loose and started clanking when the steering wheel was turned in either direction while in motion on a city street travelling at less than 40 mph. the car had less than 80k miles on it at the time.
I have 80000 miles on my 2012 kia soul and the steering column is very noisy and seems to be on the verge of disintegrating and leaving me without the ability to steer the car. the dealership admitted that there is a problem with it but refuse to fix it since it out of warranty. *tr
i purchased the vehicle in december and every so often the gauges and the lights in the dash will not work. the vehicle failed to shift into gear. i had contacted the dealer from whom i purchase the vehicle, i then took it to their repair shop. the gentleman (mechanic) was unable to determine the cause. i then called the dealership and requested another vehicle, of course they refused. in a matter of days, the dash materials began to work again. unfortunately, 20 days later, the same thing happened again. none of the lights and gauges in the dash work, and the vehicle will not go into drive. i am simply unhappy with the matter, because they are charging me nearly $20,000. for the vehicle. *tr
Steering wheel locking at speed very dangerous is unsafe to drive vehicle. *tr
We traveled from tennessee to florida and the steering kept locking-up on the kia soul. we went to galeana kia in ft. myers, fl and told them that ?when driving on the highway steering wheel just locks going straight and has to have applied pressure to turn right or left?. galeana kia did this on 12/4/2012: verify intermittent p/s assist inop. remove p/s column & assist unit. applied stabilant 22 to all connectors. remove control wiring harness. remove ipm module. remove & test hecu. found stripped bolt in ground gng10 loose ground. remove & rethreaded ground clean paint. notified tl. on the return trip back to tennessee, the steering started locking-up again. on 12/28/2012, we took the car the rusty wallace kia, and complained again about the steering. they kept the car for two days and returned to car to us and told us to drive it and call them if we still had the problem. on 1/17/2013, the steering started locking up again ? more often. on 1/21/2013, the steering is still locking up and i call rusty wallace kia to take it in for more service. i have contacted kia headquarters ([xxx]) about this steering problem and have case #[xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 20012 kia soul. the contact stated that the steering wheel seized when the engine was started. the engine had to be restarted several times in order for the contact to be able to unlock the steering wheel. the vehicle was towed to the dealer, who replaced the steering column however the failure was not corrected. the manufacture was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 2,432 and the current mileage is 6,100 updated 11/12/13*cn
Received a letter from kia stating to have my steering checked out . i am hearing a popping noise when i turn left in the steering. it pulls to the right when driving the kia dealership is saying there's nothing wrong. but there's got to be something going on and they keep trying to tell me that there's nothing wrong. also there's a suspension noise coming from the rear when i go over a great or anyting even a small little dent in the road it sounds like the whole back end of my car is going to fall apart another issue with the brakes when i apply the brakes my lights dim on the inside of my vehicle then when i go the lights will go bright again.
This is a recurring issue which kia can't identify or troubleshoot. it has been in the kia garage half a dozen times and still hasn't been fixed. the issue happens when the vehicle is initially started. the status lights in the dash all light up and go out one by one when systems are confirmed good, except the electronic assist steering and electronic stability control lights stay lit. the electronic assist power steering does not work as it is impossible to turn the wheel even if the vehicle is put into gear and driven forward or backwards. you have to turn the ignition off and restart the vehicle to reset everything and then it is fine. kia was called out to a parking lot at one point while the systems failed and they hooked up their diagnostics to the port and were unable to communicate with the vehicles computer system in order to diagnose the problem. i have been told to track this issue and there is nothing that can be done until the system totally fails and refuses to reset. diagnostics does not pickup the error when it occurs and the vehicles internal computer does not register the failure either. *tr
I bought a brand new kia soul in nov of 2011. within 200 miles of ownership, the electronic stability control malfunction and falsely activated. the esc not only falsely activated but remained activated. the steering wheel was locked up and could only be turned if considerable force was applied to it. i carefully pulled over the to side of the road. i turned off my vehicle then started it back up hoping the esc would turn off. it did not. i ended up having to get the vehicle towed to my dealer. the kia dealer service shop ultimately had to replace the entire steering column to "fix" the problem. about two months later i was driving down the interstate and attempted to do a lane change. again the electronic stability control falsely activated and caused me to collide with the vehicle directly in front of me. when the esc activated, the steering wheel locked up and caused a sudden loss of control, resulting in the accident. these are just 2 of many incidents i have experienced. *tr
2012 kia soul. consumer states power steering failure *tgw the consumer stated the first time the power steering failed, the dealer was able to find an error code of 300 electrical and they replaced the steering motor. on jan 13, 2012 as the consumer was pulling out of his driveway, he discovered the power steering failed again. he stopped, turned off the ignition and waited five seconds and then turned it back on. it appeared to work fine after that. on jan. 201, 12, as the consumer was exiting a parking lot, the power steering failed again. he stopped, turned off the ignition and waited 10 seconds and then turned it back on again. it appeared to work fine afterwards .
