On average, the 2014 Kia Optima starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 63 934 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2014 Kia Optima

I was driving my vehicle from las vegas to california on the i15 south, when out of nowhere it felt like the vehicle stauled out and started hiccuping and started loosing power very quickly so i pulled over to the side of road and the car died. i sat there in disbelief, like what just happened...then i started it back up and it started no problem but when i put it in drive it started hiccuping again and what felt like my engine was being choked out and it wasnt accelerating and there wasn't any power. im just glad that i didnt loose control or have an accident from this mysterious incident. although this incident has already lost me a great deal of money because of the lack of my work. the 2 jobs i work are both transportation orientated.

Car was working fine and we got to a light and it just stopped.

I have a 2014 kia optima that i purchased 3 years ago. my car lost all power on the highway and the motor is making a knocking noise i've taken it to my kia dealer who always does my oil changes and they are saying that i need a new motor but no recalls are falling u see my vin in their paperwork. everything is always up to date on my vehicle oil changes to detailing once a week and this happens out of no where but my insurance states that under my vin i have 2 recalls one for the motor and my kia dealer is refusing to check or replace it after my complaint i have contacted kia 1-800 number and they have also stated that i have a lifetime warranty on my motor and that i have in fact 2 recalls on my vehicle that i should take it into the nearest kia dealer but i have done that and they denied me

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 kia optima. while the vehicle was parked in the garage, the ignition failed to start. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the engine needed to be replaced. the vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the contact called jeff wyler fairfield cadillac kia nissan (located at 5815 dixie hwy, fairfield, oh 45014, (513) 682-2500) and informed them of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 50,871.

I have a 2014 kia optima and i keep up with the maintenance and also the recalls on my car the only thing i havevreall had to replace that was quite expensive to me was the battery so far but i took my car in to the dealership for the recall for the bearing and was told it was fine and everything checked out and they changed my oil for free less than 5 months later i am back at the kia dealership because i was driving down the highway at 6 am cold raining and sleeting and my car loses power engine light comes on flashing so i pull over turn off the engine then wait a minute turn it back on same thi g so i go to the dealership and was told they will check out my car and within 20 minutes told i need a new engine so now that the engine has been replaced less than a month ago my daytime running lights does not turn on and off like they are supposed to automatically if i dont turn them off or on then they won't be off or on i have had to replace my driverside headlight bulb for the second time now and when i'm driving it looks so dim so now i have to keep spending money every month on a bulb that isn't cheap my back passenger brake light keeps going out like every 3 weeks the kia optima has some electrical issues and kia needs to issue a recall and get them all fixed before someone encounter a serious problem and kia have a much serious issue on their hands.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 kia optima. while driving 65 mph, the check engine warning indicator flashed and the vehicle lost power. the contact also heard a knocking sound coming from the engine. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 kia optima. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact mentioned that the failure occurred multiple times. the vehicle coasted to the side of the road. on one occasion, when the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle failed to come to a complete stop. as a result, the vehicle crashed into a guardrail. the air bags did not deploy. a police report was filed. the contact sustained injuries to the right shoulder that required medical attention. the vehicle was towed to a local tow lot and then towed to kia atlanta south (7310 jonesboro rd, morrow, ga 30260, (770) 968-3400); however, the cause of the failure could not be determined. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 67,000.

As i was driving to work going up the hill on a highway my 2014 kia optima completely shut off, i was going 70 mph. car wouldn't start i had to get a towed to an independent repair shop where they said it might need a new engine

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 kia optima. while driving 40 mph up a hill, the vehicle seized and the ignition turned off. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not able to be driven. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 113,000.

The car started to overheat, as i was pulling to the side the warning sign to check hybrid system came ob. shortly after the car shut down while i was going up a hill. i had to tow to the repair shop and that's where they told me that the engine needed to be replaced.

Driving to from austin to houston on 290 east on 9/15/2019 at around 12:00 noon. i was going around 70 miles per hour and i heard a loud pop from the engine and i saw white smoking coming from the hood and underneath the car. i immediately pulled over and open the front hood. the engine was on fire at the bottom, i actually saw flames. the engine was turn off and i got away from the care and it did stop smoking. had car towed back to austin and it was towed to dealer were care was purchased.

I was driving to work, same route same time, when my engine stalled while on the highway going around a curve. "hybrid system failure, pull over and turn off engine" was the error. i was able to coast around the curve and to the side of the highway. had to tow it off the highway at first, and tried to jump it. (i had a problem in 2017 with the neutral safety switch on my battery, replaced safety switch/battery at the cost of 1k and a month due to the safety switch being an aspect of the recall for the non-hybrid optimas). battery was perfect, car was able to turn on, radio, ac, everything but the engine. towed it to fredy kia (great shop by the way!), by the time it got there, they stated the battery was completely dead. they replaced, then tried to turn the engine both mechanically and by hand. engine seized per dealership. (i know im an idiot for saying this but..) this is not the first kia that this has happened to with the same recall. i had a 2014 kia sportage in january have the exact same problem. all maintenance records (oil changes every 3500 miles, any belts/changes,etc.) were presented to kia of which they recalled the 2014 sportage engine. with my optima hybrid (same theta ii engine as the recall for the non-hybrid optimas per kias own "investigations" since 2017) after contacting kia headquarters, they are stating that this is not the same issue but are willing to "work with me". since then kia headquarters has talked to the dealership, and my car has been sitting there for almost 3 weeks with 0 response, or update on whats next. i currently both have and dont have a car. moral of the story, please be careful with these cars! obviously they are flawed (my "seized" engine is no longer manufactured at all due to problems with the barrings, only fix is a short block engine replacement for my long block engine then fabricate the headers, etc.)

While driving 75 mph on interstate i realized my car (it had been set on cruise control) when i tried to accelerate nothing happened realized it had completely shut down. pulled to shoulder. first time restarting failed second time i started and hit the gas it started up but had a terrible knocking sound and can barely accelerate. dropped off at kia dealership. it's sunday so waiting to here back tomorrow.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 kia optima. while driving 10 mph, the engine completely shut off without warning. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and cooling). the contact was unaware of the recall prior to filing a complaint with nhtsa. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired and remained at the contact's home. the failure mileage was unknown.

Enclosed is a letter with a detailed complaint.

There was a recall on the kia optimas for the tod bearings in the engine. i had the recall done on april 8 2019. as of 7/22/19 the same code p1326 and symptoms arw are happening again which are check engine light blinking the car is in limp mode the car was smoking and it can't go over a certain speed

Driving today on interstate 20 in south carolina at 70 mph and car just suddenly cut off. had to wait 31/2 hours for tow through kia roadside assistance in 95 degree weather. car will not start, had battery checked but car won't do anything, all dash lights, headlights, radio all will come on but the engine won't turn over to crank.

Our car completely shut down while driving on a busy highway at 55 mph. it restarted but now fast forward to a few days and it has completely shut down again and requires a tow to a dealer. we tried to explain last year that this car was having engine trouble that included revving without being on gas and bogging down. dealer kept telling us there is n o relation to the recall that was issued. strangely enough the car just passed out of warranty by 6000 miles and here we are with no car. kia should be forced to recall every 2014 optima. we very nearly could have been killed and the dealer is not helpful at all. collusion?

I was driving on the road and noticed my car hesitating to go over 20. like it was about to cut off my check engine light kept blinking on and off. i took it up to auto zone near me and a code read my rod bearing is defective. i heard a loud knocking noise, it got louder as i drove the car on the road.

As i was driving on the freeway my started to make a weird noise. as i accelerated to get over to eventually pull over my car started making a loud knocking sound. as i opened the hood you could definitely tell the noise was coming from the engine i looked online and their was a recall for the same exact issue.

I took my vehicle to have the 1803 software update done less than 2 weeks ago. i was driving back from vacation going approx. 80 mph the car cut off and several dashboard lights came on. i was in the far left lane, my car was decelerating, i needed to move across two lanes of traffic to get to the side of the road! it is an absolute miracle i was not hit or something catastrophic happened. i have called the dealership where i had the software update done. he was very transparent and explained the 1803 software update to me. ideally the concept is to set the computer so the engine will shut down to avoid piston or other parts to go through the engine. the software update raises the sensitivity level to detect an issue with the engine, not necessarily to correct or stop it from happening but was told the update is done so it will not cause a catastrophic situation to the engine! seriously?!! it did cause a catastrophic situation, i was lucky to not have been killed! my car sits 2 hours away, 2 1/2 days later and no answers. i called twice, i have been told i should have some answers today around 2 pm. i asked how i will get my car, i was told kia does have a "reunite" program but seeing as it is w/in the same state it may not be approved to get my car delivered! kia is joking, right? my car (obviously) is having major issues and researching issues and reports online appear to point to the engine. is there a class action law suit going on right now? i am going to look into this and pretty sure i won't be purchasing another kia ever and will be telling numerous people and social media outlets about this horrific story that could have ended tragically for me. p.s. when i contacted kia for a tow i was told it would be 90 minutes, i sat in 98 degree heat on side of road for an hour and a half! thanks kia! improve your cars and all facets of customer service.

I was on interstate 95 when my car would not accelerate. i had to go all the way over to the right lane as i was slowing down to get off a exit to see what was wrong with my car. i turned it off and it would not turn back on. a wrecker took it to a body shop and my motor seized up due to bearing wear. i was so terrified and hoping i could get over and off the exit safely. i am just shy of 90,000 miles, but have only had it since august. i have read many reviews and post about the recall in the 2014 kia optima motors and i had the same issues.

After beginning to accelerate to make a left turn through an intersection, the acceleration cut out and the engine began making a grinding/ cranking noise. i rolled to a stop just past the intersection (luckily no one hit me) and had to turn the car completely off. it reset and everything began working again after restarting it.

Takata recall. i have 2014 kia optima ex. the vehicles engine shutoff while i was driving with my 4 year old son in the car, thankfully at a slow speed in a shopping plaza parking lot. the dash lights work, but the engine will not start. i had the vehicle towed to a shop who found the starter had been fried and replaced it thinking it would solve the problem, but the new starter was fried as well and upon further investigation they realized the engine has completely seized. kia while having recalls for the same issue on other kia optima vehicles will not replace my engine, leaving me with a financial mess. i have not received an invoice from the shop as of yet due to the vehicle not being drivable and my attempts to find a way to fund the repairs, but will retain the invoice once received.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 kia optima. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle began to stall and would not accelerate. the contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle. once restarted, the vehicle operated normally. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine failed. the contact attempted to speak with the dealer, but had communication issues. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 65,000.

I have a kia optima 2014 kia optima love my car. there's only one bad thing i go do my recall on march 28 2019 it says everything had passed but in reality. the service that they did was careless 9 months later my car is bad motor. has 130,000 that's what 20,000 dollar is worth wow. they did my oil kia change they put the wrong oil 5-30 really that for kia turbo and kia optima 5-20 now my car is in a mechanic. i need my car fix , i did my recall thought it was for a cause but i gues it wasn't . i need my car fix ! my car stop in the middle iff the 57 south freeway .. kia optima in pomona ca

My car shut off coming off of the highway, i don't know what's going on they're saying my car isn't under recall this i've had my car for about 2.5 years and maintenance has been kept up always this is costing me more than my car is worth

My car has been perfectly fine for the past two years i have had it. up until yesterday morning on my way home from work i noticed my car was starting to run hot on my way home.i brought it to the nearest shop and they cleared that it was in fact my motor after they checked everything and now my vehicle is not drivable ... i always keep up with oil changes and continuous maintenance on my vehicle ever since i purchased it . the mechanic isn't understanding what happend and is assuring me that they may be a recall on my vehicle . so now i am here ..

My vehicle just cut off in drive on the highway all dash lights came on and vehicle will not start this is the second engine i have purchased from kia being that they insisted on my engine wasn't falling under recall under my vin number so i had to come out of pocket for the engine and labor . i've contacted 1-800 kia but they insist that i have had a life time warranty on my engine that i shouldn't have come out of pocket for a new one the first time due to defects i still have yet heard back from kia consultants i am coming out of pocket for a rental car and as well as towing and this will be the second time my engine has failed with less than 70,000 miles on it. i am a single mother and i can not afford to pay for another engine when the car has a defect i'm just so ready to be done with kia i'm almost done paying on my vehicle and this is the second time this has happened to me and eve tone is practically playing hot potato with me

I noticed my 2014 kia optima's engine knocking a few months ago. i only noticed because i was parked and stepped out of my vehicle. i took the car to kia dealership where they told me there is a recall on the engine bearings and it would be very dangerous for me to continue to drive it. they kept the car a couple of days, said they could not hear it knocking and sent the car back to me. on 2/12/19 i once again was parked and stepped out of my vehicle to hear it knocking very loudly. i took out my phone and recorded the noise, emailed kia dealership and took the car in the next day. they listened to the video and was alarmed at how loud and bad the knocking was. they kept the car about 12 days and are now saying my video is not relevant because i did not get the vin # in the video and they still can't hear a knocking sound. at this point i'm worried to drive the car. i'm afraid the engine could lock up without warning, but i am also not in a position to buy a new car or trade. if they would just replace or repair the item recalled that would be great, but kia does not want to honor their recall for me. this is my only vehicle that my kids and i can use for our commute to school and work. i have attached the video i sent to the kia dealership.

2014 kia optima hybrid completely shut down while decelerating for a traffic light. the car displayed a fault on the screen as a "possible battery management system failure." when the car shut down. had loss of steering control (electrical/optical steering). had to slow to stop, place transmission selector in park before the car would allow restart. engine warning light stayed on for 3 hours then extinguished by itself. bms was updated at cost to customer.

My boyfriend and i took a trip on a sunday afternoon about 35 minutes from home. we stopped just off the highway for lunch and as we existed the parking lot we noticed a knocking noise. we continued driving but the knocking was worsening. we pulled off the highway because the bearings began to make a noise and the car sputtered as we reached the exit. we barely made it to a gas station where we parked the car and called a tow truck. two days later we tried to start the car and the engine has locked up. i've contacted kia support and they have not responded, i've also contacted the dealership with the same result.

There is a recall on our 2014 optima on the engines. we did the initial recall check with our dealership to see if there was any debris in our engine; as it passed according to them. then dec 2018 we got an oil change and our dealership did an upgrade recommended by kia...our engine showed failure..coded the code that indicated a new engine was required. kia forced our dealership to put a harness on the system. our engine failed again jan 23, 2019..still no engine. kia is not approving a new engine yet...still working out the issues. car loses all power....in stale mode

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 kia optima. the contact stated that the engine stalled and stopped while the vehicle was in motion. the contact also heard a loud rattling noise coming from the engine. the vehicle was towed to riverside kia (8100 auto dr, riverside, ca 92504, (951) 509-1000) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the engine was repaired per an unknown recall, but the failure recurred. the contact called the dealer and was still waiting to hear back. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 67,000.

While driving the car stalled resulting in a collision with a telephone pole. i had just made a turn & the car went dead. steering and brakes locked up. now my car is completely totaled not to mention the airbags never deployed. my fianc was ejected from the vehicle resulting in a fractured hip.

I have been having problems with my cadillac convertible on my car i have gotten it replaced in year 8/2018 it had broken down in the inside of my motor now it's 2/2019 and it has lost power again and making the same noise as if pins are being thrown around in my mortor.i have took my car back to kia to try and solve this problem but they are telling me i have to pay 3000 dollars because after they fixed the part it came off warranty. i told the man in the service department that they had dodge to fix my car and now a couple months later the problem accrue again and kia well not fix it but telling me not to drive my car that im still paying a car note for hmmmm. when this problem happened i was travel nurse driving on the highway which i had to come off my travel job because i was scared my car was going to ahut down on me because will act as if its going to shut off all the time.

While on the highway trying to make a pass i suddenly loss power. i wasn't able to get the engine restarted once i pulled over. after a period of time on the side of the i restarted the car and was hearing a consistent knocking noise coming from me engine. never had any issues or anything with the car.

I was driving in a 2014 kia optima with an estimate 55,400 mile on it down i-285 east when engine suddenly lost power. i notice an odd clicking noise, check engine light came and stayed on, and rpm dropped. i safely merged over in 4 lines of traffic on shoulder and turned engine off. the car sputtered when i cracked it on the side of the road, the car sounded terrible, extremely rough idle and engine noise, then i immediately turned back off. i call roadside assist and had the car towed to the nearest kia dealership. waiting to hear back from the dealership

Tl* the contact leased a 2014 kia optima. while driving, the vehicle hesitated as if it would stall. the contact would have to apply pressure to the accelerator pedal to pick up speed. in addition, the oil and check engine indicators flashed. the contact later received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the dealer was not contacted. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

This is the second time around im gettin hybrid engine issues please turn off engine. first tine this happen 6mnths ago i got the run around for almts 3wks finally fix now im having the same issue again. i should not be getting the run around figuring out if this is covered... car shutting off

My car (2014 kia optima) started having a faint gas smell about two days ago, i thought the gas smell was because i had gotten gas and some was on my shoe. i found out today that my direct injection fuel pump on the engine is the problem. the guy at the shop said the car could have blown up at anytime, and that i was blessed. i called the kia dealership because the engine locked up on me in september of 2017. the dealership told me they replaced a part, but is now telling me they replaced the entire engine. the problem that the car is having now is not under a recall. i don't feel safe in my car because this is the second time something tragic could have happened due to something that was not my fault. i am sending this to warn other kia drivers to be careful.

Kia optima recall i was driving on the freeway and all of a sudden my engine turn off and everything else was on i got off the freeway and park at a hotel try to turn the car on again and it wouldn't turn on again i noticed that it was smoking from the hood of my car. can you please help me out

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 kia optima. while the vehicle was stationary, smoke ascended from the hood. there was no indication of the vehicle overheating prior to the failure. the contact called bob utter kia (2433 texoma pkwy, sherman, tx 75090, (903) 892-3555) and scheduled a diagnostic appointment. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 36,000.

On the morning of 10/10/18. my daughter was driving to work on a clear, strait, highway road at about 45 mph. she heard a noise then lost all power to the car. she coasted to the side. immediately after loosing power, the wheel locked on her. on the ground was tons of fluids. a wrecker was called. i took it to my mechanic and his words were "the barring went through the motor." i had to find another motor to put in my car. the pictures will show the damage.

Tl* the contact owned a 2014 kia optima. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled and completely shut off. all the instrument panel indicators illuminated and there was a strong odor of smoke inside the vehicle. the contact opened the hood and noticed flames. the fire department extinguished the fire. the contact was unsure if police or fire reports were filed. the vehicle was towed to baileys wrecker service tow lot where the contact was informed that the vehicle was a complete loss. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 91,000.

Fire! my 2014 kia optima caught fire while i was driving it on the highway. first, i could smell something burning. then, smoke quickly filled my cabin. i pulled over lost steering and brakes, put car in park. got out look behind me. see sparks on ground. get in call 911 and with in seconds my car snap, crackled, and popped and flames engulfed my vehicle. i grabbed my purse and ran. i had to watch my car burn. i am very thankful i made it out.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 kia optima. the contact stated that while reversing at 5 mph, smoke was seen coming from under the hood. as a result the vehicle caught on fire. the local fire department was called and extinguished the fire. a fire department report was filed. the contact sustained scraps and bruises from escaping the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to jim marsh kia (8555 w centennial pkwy, las vegas, nv 89149 (702) 946-1000) but a cause of the fire was not provided to the contact. the contact mentioned that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling) at the same dealer before the failure occurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 89,000.

I purchased my kia optima 2014 brand new off of a dealership lot. a few years later i was driving to california and my engine completely went out, i called the 800 number for kia they towed my car back to the dealership. kia had failed to inform me that there was a campaign for a recall for my engine however they did replace the engine at the exact same dealership i purchased it from. as soon as the engine was replaced our started to smelling gasoline aroma along with leaking from underneath my car. i called the dealership they told me that that was normal and those things would soon subside. a few months later as i was backing into my garage my neighbor frantically wave me down stating that there was smoke and flames coming from the car i looked over to the passenger side and i did see smoke and i looked over to the driver side and i saw a red fire and smoke i jumped out of the car. the fire department soon came within 6 minutes my car was halfway ignited into flames. he has stated they would send out a forensic fire investigator and i should hire my own fire investigator. i did so he has yet to disclose their finding on cause of fire. however shortly thereafter my forensic fire investigators hit me over information stating that kia failed to replace the clip that was absolutely mandatory from the gas tank to the engine. this poses a big issue for consumers can potentially put their lives in danger. unfortunately i'm a victim of this and i feel kia should be obligated to write they're wrong.

I was heading north bound, cruise control set at 55 when my 2014 kia optima thera ii motor started making a grinding sounds, lost complete power and stalled out. car would not turn on anymore, a texas state trooper and small town cop helped me pushed the car into a parking lot after about an hour, the car started smoking and caught fire from the engine bay. luckily no one got hurt but the car is a total lose and i have a feeling kia is going to give me the runaround. the theta ii does have an open recall. the motor was checked twice and passed both times.

Car stalled on me as i was driving. now makes cyclic noise when i drive. i don't drive it at all had mechanic check it and he said i need a new engine.
