On average, the 2013 Kia Optima starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 82 217 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Kia Optima

One week after an oil change, i was (30 miles away from home) driving on a highway at a speed of approximately 55mph. i felt a vibration begin. i turned off the heater and turned off the stereo. immediately i heard a horrific metallic banging noise coming from the engine area. there were no warning lights or cel illuminated. the engine stalled as i was traveling down the highway and i had to try to pull it safely to the edge of the road. i was about 20 feet away from the entrance to a business, so i tried to start the car to get it safely off the roadway. it tried to start, but made an extremely loud "ka-thunk" sound and then started smoking from under the hood. i turned off the flashers, called for a tow truck and a ride home. i had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic near my home and called for a ride for myself. once i arrived home, i called kia consumer affairs and reported the incident. they provided a case number and stated that i would now need my car to be towed to a kia dealer for diagnosis. the kia dealer does not currently have a loaner vehicles, so i am waiting until monday to have my car towed in hopes i can acquire a vehicle at that time until they are able to determine if kia is going to replace the engine. in the interim, my independent mechanic did a quick inspection and stated there are metal shavings in my oil and it appears as though my engine "blew a rod." my vin doesn't meet the recall criteria, but rather the pi1803 bulletin. 2013 kia optima sxl; i'm the second owner. it's been babied, appropriate oil changes, 93k miles.

I was driving on the highway when i started hearing a knocking sound coming from the engine. it got really loud, lost power and low voltage warning popped up. pulled over and the knocking got louder. while shifting lanes with no power i almost got in several accidents. got to the shoulder and knocking got worse. as i was on the shoulder with hazards on the whole car died out including hazards. was out until 1130pm with no hazards waiting for a tow. got it to koa the next day and they said engine was seized, they want me to pay $1300 just to take the engine apart to see what part is damaged. on top of that they said it would be $7000-9000 for new engine. they need to recall these hybrid engines.

I was driving then all of a sudden my car cut off, i cant get it to crank. two different people think the engine has locked up for no reason

My battery indicator light came on while driving on hudson bridge rd. at the traffic light the car would not take off after the light change. i tried to turn the car off to restart, but it would not turn off or move. there was smoke coming from under the hood. someone helped me push out the street and the next think we notice are flames coming from under the hood. the car was on fire and a worker at a nearby shop used an entire fire extinguisher but the flames continued until the fire department arrived to put out. the fire burned the front of the car and tires.

Driving the car down the highway at 60mph engine light came on and motor starting violently shaking and immediate loss of power

Driving and check engine light came on then car just stopped running and would not start, on a state road

While i was driving the car stop running while in motion on a city street.

Oil consumption issues: i got an oil change on 11/27/19 i explained that i had to put oil in it several times in between oil changes. the person at kia told me to come back in 1000 for them to check it (not to add oil) i checked it the morning 12/8/19 at 900 miles - it was under the low mark and i was 2 hour away from home. i took it back to kia on monday evening 12/9/19 almost 1200 miles from the last oil change.). person at kia staid i was down 2 liters (very little oil on the end of the dip stick . the oil light did not come on, but it did flicker a few light on my 2 hour drive home ) ' kia advised i'm over my 100,000 miles and that's not part of the engine recall. i went home, checked the internet and there tens of thousands of blog about oil consumption. 1 day ago there was a new story, where kia denied a person claim after the engine seized. an inspection found a hole in the engine block. the mechanic wrote in a report that it was most likely caused by a lack of lubrication; therefore kia did not pay. kia is aware of the oil consumption issues. my local dealership received hundred's of complaints but i was told there is no recall for that issue. if you get it checked it'll read for a different issue other that the current engine recall; it will miss up your chances of getting a new engine when it seizes up.) i don't feel like i'm safe in this vehicle and kia's still playing russian roulette with our lives.

I was leaving work and my car wouldn't crank, i thought it was my starter so i replaced the starter only to hear loud knocking noise coming from the engine. i was concerned with the work from firestone so i took my car. while driving the car on a busy intersection my car, a 2013 kia optima just shut off completely after the starter was replaced. i initially thought it happened during the replacement of the starter but an adjuster came out and ruled the starter was brand new and had nothing to do with the engine. as i continue to read online reviews i see it can be a problem with the engines on kia. i have a loud knocking noise coming from the engine with metal flakes in the oil.

2013 kia optima sport with approximately 47,000 miles loss of turbo. pulled out of my garage and my car seemed sluggish. i noticed the engine light was on. as i accelerated my turbo did not seem to kick in and my car would rev up and not accelerate very well. called kia they said i have 5 year or 50,000 mile warranty. i told them i also have 10 year 100 mile powertrain warranty. just ran a recall check and nhtsa states recall on long block engine and turbo recall on my sport model.

I was driving away from my house going to my moms house she lives approximately 30 minutes from me 15 minutes into the drive i stop the traffic light trunt red the car began to start acting like it was about to cut off so i pulled over to the nearest store to call for help because i just knew i wasnt go make it to my moms low and behold when i went to crank it back up to attempt ty o go to my moms before help came it won't stay crank so i waited in my car until my mom and the tow truck arrived now the car is just sitting in my yard until i find out what's really wrong with it

The car started to make a ticking sound, while in motion on a city street, quickly took the car to a shop & was told that the part that had to get fixed has to do with the code po1326

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia optima. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving 50 mph and the check engine oil indicator illuminated. the contact pulled the vehicle over and filled the vehicle with oil, despite the fact that the vehicle recently had an oil change. the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the engine rod and ignition coil were defective. the manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was unknown.

Was driving my daughter to school for theater practice on a sunday and within less than 1 minute of pulling out of our drive all the lights came on in my car and it was totally seized, it died . we were in the middle of traffic. one of the busiest roads in nashville ..and we had no control of the car. we were terrified we were going to get into an accident. we made a turn at the light.. coasting and tried to restart the car in the middle of another busy road .. where we blocked a fast food drive. that's as far as it would go. i tried to start the car but couldn't tell if it was on or off. push button ignition was not working .. then smoked started rolling out. we jumped out and called 911 as it's my only transportation and being a single parent can't afford for it to burn up. it smelled like burned plastic or wires. the fire department came but the fire was out. they could smell where it had burned and they helped me push it into a nearby parking lot to get us out of turning traffic. i had no power steering and all the power worked but the engine was seized.. out of no where. here we were stranded and crying. she was calling school as to not get in trouble and i was calling my parents for a ride.

I was driving to work-freeway 65 when check engine light and oil light came on. the car dropped power and i could have had serious injuries to myself and others. i contacted kia and they had it towed to dealer-dealer and kia 800# give you the run around-they said there engineers told them we need to do oil comsumption test and told me to pick up this dangerous car and drive it. i have made numerous calls to kia and they never call back- i even asked the service manager if he has driven my car and he said no. this is not taking care of your consumers/customers to even ask me to place my life in danger to keep driving this car-they are well aware of fires and the seriousness of driving this car and putting others in danger-my car has sat at kia -independence, mo for 2 1/2 weeks and i also received no recall notice ever. my car had 5 recalls at the time it was towed the most serious recall is sc147 nhtsa 17v224 my car had 65,000 miles . there is no way i will drive that car until kia resolves the issues, i also had large amount of white smoke- coming from tail pipe-dealer said car burning oil don,t know where, well that isn.t so true. dealer aid motor needs replaced but it is out of there hands because engineers said oil test needs done.drive it come in every week so they can see how much oil it burns-i am glad they think our time isn.t important or our safety-this is there mistakes and they need to resolve it.

Recently i have been having issues with my vehicle it will cut off while driving the and i am unable to apply the brakes, just last night while driving the vehicle it stalled out and started going slowly i could not apply brakes to the car and it started smoking from the dash and the engine with no other current conditions i had to throw the car in park with out being able to use the brakes in order to stop the vehicle this almost caused an accident and almost cost me my life i noticed from other complaints others are having the same issues with no current solution or problem this is very weird

I was driving down a neighborhood road and the car quit working, all the lights on the dash popped up and the car would not start anymore afterwards

During a normal drive home the entire car just stopped in the middle of traffic. leaving me stranded in the middle of the street. the car was in motion when it cut off. luckily i was able to get it to stop before things got any worse. it appeared that the engine had locked up. i had to get a tow truck to take it to a repair shop.

My car keeps having some kind of an electrical glitch where it seems my battery is dead completely wipes the memory from the car then it'll start 1 minute later, tires keep getting eating from the inside just above the rim, motor has been making a ticking noise since i got the car it was looked at as one of the recalls and said it was fine, i feel this car is unsafe for me and my family, the has even shut off as i was driving down the road acted like it was the battery was dead and it started a couple minutes later

Intermittent stalling of vehicle upon slowing/stopping at redlights/stop signs in which engine begins losing power/gas either stalls as if it's trying to quit or car stalls & quits. this has happened numerous times, nearly causing accidents & increasing in frequency. i have noticed my motor knocking louder & upon visual exam, the entire motor is shaking which can be felt while driving but most noticeable causing car to shake when at an idol. most recent, i've began to smell a very strong odor of gasoline upon starting the car but worsens upon accelerating. the car is running rich, and smell of gasoline is so strong, we have to roll down windows. the fumes are more prominent towards rear of car close to exhaust. i cannot see any leakage of fuel when looking however i am losing fuel somewhere because my gas mileage has greatly gotten worse & burning through it at a fast pace. i took it to kia dealership in salisbury nc today in which they upgraded computer software related to recall on 2.4l gdi engine as i have a 2013 kia optima. mechanic states the engine test did pass but feels it will need to be replaced at some point?? mechanic said he didn't smell any gasoline but he did not test drive the car or run diagnostic test as he said i would have to pay the $129 fee......i declined paying the fee and requested it be done as this is a well known problem but that was denied. i need this addressed and repaired. it is dangerous, costing me more money for gas & affecting my job. please advise.......this is not acceptable and should not place financial or safety burdens on owners as we already pay enough financing as well as regular/normal wear & tear expenses!! i'm still making payments on mine but becoming too difficult & dangerous to drive esp getting to work so i can support my family!!

My 2013 kia optima ex with a 2.4l...i was drivin down the interstate and check engine light came on and car went into a lemp mode. had car scaned code is p1326 same as other kias same yr looked online to see if i had recalls on my car and there is not

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia optima. while exiting the highway and passing another vehicle, all power was lost to the vehicle. the contact was able to turn into a parking lot and the entire instrument panel illuminated. the contact attempted to restart the vehicle and smelled a burning odor. the contact quickly evacuated the vehicle along with her disabled daughter. there were no flames present. a tow truck driver arrived at the scene and noticed the burning odor. the vehicle was towed to dutch miller kia of charleston (335 maccorkle ave sw, charleston, wv 25303, (855) 739-5369). the vehicle was towed to the dealer last night. the dealer called the contact and provided them with the vehicle's repair history. the engine was repaired several times in the past regarding an unknown recall. in may of 2019, the contact called the manufacturer because she was concerned about a knocking noise that was getting louder and louder. the manufacturer directed the dealer to install a device to eliminate the knocking noise. the device would enable the vehicle to be driven 35 mph should the engine malfunction for an unknown distance. the failure mileage was 116,000.

My car puts out exhaust and loses power while stepping on the gas peddle. oil disappears when this happens. have to put oil in my car about every 2 weeks. engine light comes on and car won't go. been in shop 4 times but kia will not fix it correctly because the engine code that they need to fix the engine doesn't come on so i now don't have a car to drive because they say the only fix is a new engine but they won't fix it. on going issue for past 5 months. same thing everytime. they put a bandage on it and then it lasts for about 2 to 5 weeks and then dies again. same issue every single time. this happens while the car is in motion and then when it loses power my car just slows down very quickly and won't go. dangerous/scary when this happens on the freeway. the car also does this bucking where it feels like it is trying to go but won't.

'glow relay recall' vehicle was in motion on a city street when the engine light started flashing and the car went into limp mode and required me to pull off the road. the engine was scanned for the code and came up as p1326 'glow relay stuck on'. i looked it up and saw that it can be common in the hyundai sonata which is hyundai's version of a kia optima with the same engine and hyundai does have a recall for that issue.

Engine seized while driving in the highway almost causing a accident. there is a recall for this matter and was not informed to me.

I own a 2013 kia optima my car wouldn't start. then after a few tries it started up. then it did it again. my car wouldn't start. my car would stall out. then it started making a knocking noise in the engine. the next day the check engine light went on. my odometer just hit over 100,000 a few weeks before. i made an appt at a kia dealership service dept but it's not until next week. i've only had this car for 3 months. i just purchased it. now i've learned about the kia recall sc147 & nhtsa recall 17v224000 on bearings that lead to engine seizure & that can lead to metal in the oil. and it causes a knocking noise. i am positive this is what's wrong with my car. i hope the kia dealership will fix my car next week that's the earliest appointment they have. i hope i can get a car loaner.

The vin did not get that this is an optima hybrid, which isn't in the recall, sc145, but has similar symptoms, only kia optimas. driving at 75mph, i tried to accelerate to get around a car and i felt/started hearing rod knock. at idle the sound is worsened only because i'm not going highway speeds. i'm worried that the engine could have seized and created a serious accident. it was diagnosed as rod failure at the kia dealership. the car has 116,000 miles and is just outside of the warranty. they don't want to help out in any way because it's not part of the recall program.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia optima. the contact stated that the vehicle consumed an excessive amount of oil and the contact heard an abnormal clinking noise. in addition, the check engine and oil warning indicators illuminated and flashed. the vehicle was taken to southwest kia of rockwall (1790 interstate hwy 30, rockwall, tx 75087, (469) 402-2900) where an engine knocking test was performed, but it failed twice. in addition, oil was added to the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that they would investigate the failure; however, no further assistance was provided. the contact stated that the failure was similar to what was listed in nhtsa campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling). the failure mileage was 122,,856. *tt *tr

I was driving home a few guys i work with and had no previous issues with the engine before, and on my drive home i was sitting at a red light as the car started to shake uncontrollably. the light then turned green and i casually followed the speed of the traffic no more than 150 ft before the motor started squealing and knocking, come to find out it's a recall the regular kia optimas have, it's spun a bearing in the 3rd cylinder and kia refuses to replace it saying that it isn't covered because it's the hybrid with the same issue. kia needs to own up to it. i used this vehicle as a work transport and has always had its maintenance done. now i'm out a vehicle and kia is ignoring my messages to them. i'm very unsatisfied with the way kia has treated me. no one has reached out to me, just ignoring me as a customer. dissatisfaction, major dissatisfaction.

Engineering died with no warnigs on state highway 33 while moving

When attempting to start my vehicle everything turned on in the car except the car itself. brake pedal was stiff and nothing would turn the engine on. it took over 10 minutes and was finally able to get the vehicle to fire. has happened twice today 7/13/19. the vehicle is a push button start with battery charge of 95% and new batteries in the fob.

While driving at 65 mph on the freeway my kia suddenly stalled causing me to have to steer the car off the freeway barely avoiding getting stuck in the middle of the freeway. luckily traffic wasn't bad but i did have to avoid getting hit by oncoming cars.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 kia optima. while driving 75 mph, the vehicle stalled and all the instrument panel indicators illuminated. the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road as it caught fire under the hood. the fire department arrived and extinguished the flames. the entire front end of the vehicle was burned. a police report was filed. it was unknown if the vehicle was destroyed. the contact was not sure if a fire report was filed. there were no injuries. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the failure mileage was 92,000.

Car stopped working motor making loud popping sounds and stopped on me..there was no indication or warnings..

My brakes felt like they locked up and gas pedal went to the floor so i pulled into a parking lot. i wasn't sure of the problem at all. i left it there for approximately 4hours before coming back to it. i wanted to see if the problem still existed before calling a tow truck. after i hit the ignition to start my car it began to smoke in the engine. i called 911 and by the time they got there it began to shoot flames from the engine. all the damage was in the engine and it was completely melted to nothing. my insurance adjuster said she had never seen anything so bad like that in an engine. the man at the collision center told her that it looked like it was fueled by gasoline in the engine. obviously there was something wrong in the engine for this to happen. i am just glad i wasn't driving down the road when it happened. i don't understand how a vehicle can be sitting stationary and catch on fire. my car is at a total loss according to my insurance adjust today. i am very frustrated with what happened and now i am without a car. i want some answers as to why my engine caught on fire and i feel that kia needs to take responsibility for what happened. this was the first car i have ever purchased on my own and i have not even had it a year and this happens.

Check engine came on and carmax said it needs a new engine

This concerns kia recall sc147. i have a 2013 kia optima ex that i purchased used with 98,000 miles on it in february 2019. the car drove perfect without any problems. i recently had the oil changed in june. a couple of weeks later the motor started knocking slightly for no reason after a recent trip to memphis, tennessee. the engine stalled in traffic so i put it in neutral and i was able to crank it back up. the next morning it was really knocking loudly so i took it to a mechanic who stated the engine was trying to throw a rod.

My 2013 kia optima engine shut off while i was driving and luckily i didnt get into accident and was able to park nearby to wait for a towed truck. this is very scary and dangerous. not sure what to do

My friend was driving my car and while in the turning lane my car shuts off. car would not turn on and it would not take a jump. the location was a busy street in memphis.
