We have classified the 729 complaints from 2018 Jeep Wrangler about STEERING into the following categories.
Steering wheel has excess play, wanders around the highway went at highway speeds, especially in turns.
Loose steering, causes over correction at highway speeds. suspect the lack of rigidity in the rubber bushings to be too soft, causing a half inch dead spot in the steering before the wheels adjust to the steering wheel input.
Wobble after hitting bump, expansion joint, or pot hole at highway speeds.
Going approximately 70 mph on the freeway my jeep very suddenly began to shake/vibrate very violently. extremely difficult to maintain control. felt like the car was going to come apart/tires were going to fall off. after slowing down to maybe 30 mph the shaking resolved. jeep has approximately 5800 miles on it.
This evening while at highway speed (70mph) i crossed o er an overpass on a slight turn. just after the overpass was a slight bump and my jl began shaking violently. i was certain that something had broken based upon how violently it ahook. i quickly pulled into the emergency lane and slowed to a stop. i visually inspected all tires and suspension components as best i could and saw no obvious damage/issue. i decided to attempt to continue slowly. i was able to make it to my destination and back home without further issues but needless to say i am very concerned about the safety of my jl. i had a great deal of difficulty controlling the vehicle during this episode. i will be contacting my jeep dealership first thing in the morning. i love my jl but i am very concerned about its safety.
While driving at 40 mph the steering locked up and i could not turn. applied brakes and additional pressure to steering wheel and was able to steer vehicle enough to avoid any collision, came to a stop and steering seemed to return to normal. this happened at about 9500 miles. this happened 1/19 was driving at 55 mph, and hit a dip in the road. the entire vehicle began to shake uncontrollably, went left of center, applied brakes and slowed vehicle down. regained enough steering to return to my lane at about 10/15 mph. on coming traffic slowed to a stopped to assist in avoiding an accident. this happened at about 11000 miles. this happened 2/21/19
Vehicle steering wheel completely locks up while driving on highway nearly causing an accident as you are unable to correct wheel for up to 10 seconds. while tsb 08-092-18 was issued 7 months ago this presents a significant possibility for accident and injury and should be recalled for anyone affected.
When traveling above 70mph and hitting a rough place on the road the steering shakes violently including the dash until you slow down to 40mph. this has happened 6+ times now with the local deal ship not knowing how to fix. we were almost rear ended because of this. and thank goodness their wasn't an abandoned vehicle on the shoulder. we have a video of this happening
While driving at approx 60-65mph, in 30 degree weather and on the highway, i was coming around a bend and the steering locked up. i could not turn my steering wheel and almost collided with a tractor trailer and was heading straight into the median. after pulling on the steering wheel and slowing down, the steering then loosend and my car swerved almost hitting the car in the next lane over. this has happened on 2 other separate occasions besides the one just explained. i'm very concerned over the safety of my family. the dealership 'couldn't duplicate the problem' so no repair was done. this is a serious problem and needs to be addressed asap.
At roughly 45 mph steering seemed to 'lock'... it took extreme force to turn enough to make a slight corner while driving. the slight corner is approximately a 20 degree curve to the right then back to the left. after this initial 'lock' the steering felt as if it wanted to only go straight. even a lane change was difficult. the safety part of it is that while applying enough force to turn the vehicle...when it 'unlocked' i nearly turned into the car in the lane beside me!!
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. while driving 45 mph over a dip in the road, the steering wheel shook uncontrollably. the vehicle veered into a pasture. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to benson chrysler plymouth and dodge inc (400 west wade hampton boulevard, greer, sc 29650, 864-877-0161) where it was diagnosed that the steering damper needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 58020235. the failure mileage was 6,458.
At speeds over 70 mph when i hit a bump or seam in the road the steering whell vibrates violently as if something has disconnected. after about 10 seconds it stops. this has happened 3 times in 2 weeks. vehicle only has 4k miles on it. any speed over 65 causes a looseness in the wheel on uneven pavement even when not vibrating. after inspection dealer contacted chrysler and they advised replacing steering damper. dealer advised to drive with caution till the part came in but i asked for a loaner as it obviousy unsafe to drive.
While driving down the interstate going 75 mph i hit a pot hole in the pavement and the front end started shaking and the steering wheel was moving, aka death wobble.
I have brought my vehicle to the dealership two times for the death wobble. on highways, going 55+ if my car hits an uneven surface or bump, the car shakes uncontrollably until i reduce my speed. it doesn't happen every time, but noticed its when my foot is still on the gas upon hitting these bumps. horrifying - especially driving with children. people driving next to me could see the car doing this at one point
Power steering stopped working when driving on highway. only can steering 10 degrees either right or left. thank god, i was able to pull over. i restarted and steering cane back.
Death wobble second occurence...i was driving on the freeway i-10 at approx 70mph i ran over a rough patch in the pavement; suddenly the steering began violently wobbling, i let off the gas, checked to see it was clear and i changed lanes as i began to slow down to about 40 mph as i attempted to regain control of the steering. finally the wobbling stopped, and i was able to continue my driving speed. then after about 5 min had passed, again the steering started shaking violently and it was even more difficult to control. it was very stiff and difficult to steer. it was at that point that my husband who was with me said thats it, were taking it back to the dealer, which i did, i took it back to crystal chrysler in cathedral city where we purchased it on 11-30-2018. there is a chrysler #u48 listed. this is my second complaint ive posted here on this website in the hopes that something can be resolved as i am no longer going to drive my brand new jeep wrangler because of the extremely unsafe "death wobble" that i have experienced even after taking it into the dealership where they kept it for 10 days, and first told me they could find nothing wrong with it, then they replaced the steering box. i can no longer drive my jeep and feel safe, i feel that at anytime the steering could go out and it will cause a crash in which both myself and someone else can be killed....!!!! nhtsa id number 11171707
My 2018 wrangler will not go straight i need to correct all the time. if i look off to my side mirrors or my instruments when i look back to the road i must correct. if there is a wind it becomes a serious problem. i requested the dealer fix the problem and they replaced the steering shock.that did not solve the problem. help
Death wobble when i hit expansion joints on a over pass, bumps, pat holes etc..i bought my jeep a week ago and only 500 miles on no modification all stuck from factory
Model is a 2018 jk sport (2-door) with 3,400 miles. upon a right turn into the entrance drive of an apartment complex and hitting a slight bump at the curb line, the car immediate loss steering control along with the traction control light illuminating on the dash and felt the vibration of the anti-lock brakes activating. stopped immediately, check underneath, saw no damage. continued slowly into the apartment complex, the steering was very loose taking many turns of the steering wheel to turn the front wheel of the car. any time the steering wheel was turned right or left, the traction control light illuminated on the dash along with the vibration of the anti-lock brakes activating. with the loose steering and the traction control light / abs activating when turning the steering wheel, nothing else out of the ordinary detected, decided to drive slowly to the jeep dealer. on the way to the dealer, on a straight away at about 25 mph got a violent shaking in the front of the vehicle, commonly known as the "death wobble". arrive safely to the dealer keeping the speed real slow and the steering turns to a minimum. inspection by the dealer reveled the front track bar bracket had completely detached from the frame on the way to the dealer. as seen in the uploaded photo, it is quite obvious that the bracket was improperly welded to the frame. this is exactly the same problem under safety recall ua5 / nhtsa 18v-675 for the jl model, but this jk model of the same year. *dt*jb
When my son's jeep wrangler hits a small bump on the freeway at speeds over 50 miles an hour, it goes into violent steering vibration. the first occurrence was on november 2nd, 2018 and i took it to the dealership for repair. the issue happened again on january 12th, 2019, and chrysler repaired it for the second time. the issue recurred for the third time on february 9th, 2019 and this time, the vibration was even more violent than the first 2 instances. the first occurrence happened when the car had approximately 10,000 miles on it. it now has 12,000 miles on it. as i lost confidence in chrysler being able to permanently repair the vehicle, i am requesting arbitration for chrysler to take the car back and relieve me of the lease as i don't want to endanger my son's life, especially that it took him a frightening 5 to 6 seconds to regain control over the vehicle during the last instance. he was driving 65 miles an hour and the vehicle veered across 3 lanes. had there been other cars, my son would have been in a life threatening accident.
Vehicle will not stay in lane. constant drifting to left or right requiring steering corrections to be made in order to stay in lane. constant problem regardless of speed, road conditions or weather have had dealer review 5 times and have numerous videos depicting this issue
The front wheels of the vehicle often shake violently at highway speeds when the vehicle hits a small bump in the road. often the triggering event could also be uneven or patched sections of freeway. the front end shaking is so violent, control of the vehicle is difficult. the vehicle must be slowed immediately below 50mph to stop the shaking. this will happen at least once, every time i drive on a freeway.
At highway speed the vehicle develops a pronounced shimmy which lasts for several seconds when encountering a bump in the road. identical to what was commonly called the "death wobble" on my 97 wrangler.
In cold weather <40, when at highway speeds, any time i try to change lanes to the left, the steering binds and barely moves. a few times it has suddenly 'let go', and with the force i was having to use to change lanes, all of a sudden makes the vehicle almost lose control.
If i run over a bridge expansion joint or bump in the road 50-75 miles per hour the front suspension will start shaking and grow to a violent shake if you dont reduce speed to 40 or less. 1 incident i was on highway and it started to shake violently so i had to break heavily and struggled to maintain control while pulling off to the shoulder of the road. i had a hard time keeping from running into the wire barrier.
I have had numerous issue with being able to steer the vehicle strait. the jeep is all over the place. i had to hold the wheel at a angle for the jeep to steer strait. i was hearing a loud clunking noise when driving at low speeds maybe 10-15mph and was told the rear differential had to be replaced.
Steering feels loose and wanders at highway speeds. had two alignments performed but did not fix the problem. also when hitting a pothole or expansion joint at highway speeds, the steering wheel shakes violently and the car starts to wobble out of control. the only way to get control of the car is to brake and slow down.
When driving at highway speed hit bump my truck shakes violently that i have to slam breaks just to get trunk under control this is known in the jeep forums as the death shake the steering wheel shake along with entire truck .i have had my wrangler serviced twice already and they put in steering damper in the first time and 1 month later it was doing it again then i brought it back and they replaced it again the damper was bad from factory not even a week later its doing it again,
While vehicle is in motion, steering wheel will begin to "vibrate" and almost wobble out of control, you have to almost bring the car down to speed and back in control.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. while driving at any speed over a bump in the road, the vehicle shook violently without warning. the vehicle was taken to kelly jeep chrysler dodge ram (978-683-8775, located at 175 pelham st, methuen, ma 01844) where a software update was performed, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer and the steering damper was replaced, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact back to the dealer for further observation. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 19,000.
Severe wobbling at highway speeds usually after hitting bump or uneven pavement.
When outside air temperature is cold, steering becomes difficult at 50mph plus. steering almost locks up and lets you move 15 to 20 degrees from center and will not move more unless a lot of force is applied to overcome, thus when this happens usually you go flying off to the side of the road. there is a tsb for this, 08-092-18 - i had this applied and did not help lots of information on jl forums; https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/steering-wheel-locking-up.20839/page-3
Vehicle has about 1-2 inches of free play in the steering wheel when straight. it is difficult to keep the vehicle in its lane at highway speeds, constant corrections are needed. vehicle does not feel safe to drive at highway speeds.
Driving at highway speeds the vehicles steering is dangerous and it becomes more pronounced in the wind and in the rain. it drifts dangerously and when trying to correct the drift the steering is not very responsive since it has way too much play so you begin to over correct causing even more issues. in the rain the vehicle has the feel as if it's hydroplaning and the impact from the wets roads and puddles causes the vehicle to drift even more. i found that many people have received replacements of the 1.steering box (68259507ae) 2.the damper (recall 77072360) 3.track bar (68394087aa) all of these parts have been upgraded by mopar and i'm guessing that was for obvious reasons but my dealership and customer service at jeep/chrysler refuse to acknowledge there is a problem yet the problem persists. i showed them proof in both videos and with the upgraded parts and it does not seem to matter to them that this is a dangerous situation. i will provide a link of a person who got these issues repaired this individual has the same make model and year jeep i have. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asz1wujbjby . i do not feel comfortable driving this vehicle it feels dangerous to me ... my wife will not drive it at all and she was the one who wanted the vehicle since we bought it for her. this has been going on since we bought the vehicle. i have done the research and 1,000's of people are complaining about this, some have a dangerous wobble, some have really bad drift where its hard to keep the vehicle on the road at highway speeds, and some have both. funny, i was told by my dealership that this was normal for a jeep and its not acceptable i told him it felt dangerous and he agreed it drifts but says that normal for a jeep. it gets so bad at times in the rain i have to get in the right lane and drive 30 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour zone . the jeep has only 5k miles
When driving on the highway the car wanders to the left or right making constant correction.
Steering has excessive steering wheel play and overall vaugness 1-2 inches left and right of center. vehicle wanders driving down the road at all speeds and requires constant driver input to keep in straight line. this issue has been here since purchase. vehicle has 1683 miles as of writing this.
I purchased a 2018 jeep wrangler (jl 4 door sahara) in august 2018. at speeds exceeding 55 mph the jeep shakes uncontrollably making handling/steering close to impossible. i have to slow down to about 25 mph to gain control of the vehicle. this happens when i hit even a slight bump in the road. my jeep has already been to dealership for a similar issue (recall on track bar frame bracket) and nothing was found. i have a $48,000 vehicle that i can't take on the highway. currently less than 5000 miles on the wrangler. very dangerous!
When driving at highway speeds my steering has locked up or become difficult to turn. it becomes very stiff and very difficult to control. the last time it locked up it "broke loose" while trying to force it to maintain the lane and i almost over corrected into the turn at 60mph.
I currently own a 2018 jeep wrangler unlimited jl model. my complaint is regarding what is known as death wobble. i am a former ase mechanic. i had 10,000 thousand miles on my 18 jl that is completely stock. i was traveling west bound on state route 33 at approximately 65 mph when hit a expansion joint that cause a rapid and rather violent shaking in the steering wheel that severally diminished my ability to not only steer my vehicle but also my braking ability. you have to get your vehicle slowed down to under 30 mph or come almost to a complete stop on the freeway. this is a serious safety issue when you have to stop in the middle of the freeway. the dealership replaced the steering stabilizer per fca as a so called fix. being a ase certified mechanic for years this has never been a fix only a cover up/ band-aid fix to cover up the true issue. my 2018 jeep wrangler is back at the dealer again after approximately 1000 miles for the same issue. that's even after fca so called steering stabilizer fix. if my jeep was lifted or modified in anyway i can accept my changes could have caused this issue. it's stock. this will mark 6 weeks the dealer has had my jeep looking to try and repair this issue. i currently can not have any faith in my jeep to take it anywhere with out fear of getting hit or hitting someone else due to fca not taking this issue seriously and replacing steering components. fca says this issue is caused mostly by modified or altered/ worn front ends. the new 18 jl model is a completely new from ground up per president of fca( meaning they have modified the whole steering/ suspension with this problem built in by them). they need to fix this asap before death wobble lives up to its name! this has happened before there fist attempt to fix it on november 15th 2018 and has happened after fca said fix on january 29th 2019.
At a speed of approx. 75 mph after hitting a number of pumps/potholes on the highway the steering wheel started to vibrate/shake like crazy - a terrifying situation in rush hour on a highway. the shaking stopped once the speed was under 50 mph.
After sitting outside overnight with ambient temperatures under 30 degrees. i was driving the jeep on the highway and found that once i got above about 55 mph the steering would lock up. if i jerked it, it would bind and then break. then once back at center it would start all over again.
Purchased the brand new 2018 jeep wrangler sahara with 40 miles on november 30, 2018. currently, this vehicle has 1,975 miles. in late december 2018 hit a bump on a highway driving the posted speed of 70mph and the vehicle vibrated a bit and had to slow down to handle the vehicle. each week after driving the vehicle on daily commute in city conditions at the posted speed of 25-30mph, after hitting a bump in the pavement the vehicle does not handle well, as if i would lose control. on january 27, 2019 driving on a ramp at the speed of 45mph upon entering the interstate the vehicle hit a bump in the pavement, the vehicle begins an uncontrollable vibration and was shaking the steering wheel, i had to pull over. after researching this issue online with the same issue, i feel unsafe driving my only vehicle. for a vehicle valued over $45,000, i need this issue to be investigated before someone is seriously injured. i do not feel safe driving on the interstate at the posted speed. the vehicle feels unstable while driving over any bump in the pavement at 20mph the vehicle wobbles and sways.
I am getting the death wobble in my 2018 wrangler jlu, when on the highway. i've had the steering stabilizer replaced by my dealership with a new jeep part. the problem is not fixed. there is still a lot of slop in the steering, and the death wobble is still happening at highway speeds. my vehicle has 4000 miles on it.
Steering wanders all over the road at all speeds. constantly have to fight the wheel to keep it straight
'death wobble' when traveling on pa/oh turnpike traveling 70mph i experienced a violent shaking of the steering wheel. this shaking was uncontrollable and required me to pull over on multiple occasions and slow down below 50mph for the shaking to stop.
A small bump causes the steering wheel and front end of the car to violently shake. it happens at varying speeds, taking your foot off the accelerator or trying to break does not get it to stop, you ride it out.the wheels are shaking along with the steering wheel. in addition, the clock doesn't keep time and radio intermittently drops stations, scans through all of the stations or picks up static. i have a video of not being able to control the radio(on or off), unable to change the volume or shut the radio off. i was not able to use touch screen or the controls on the steering wheel in order to operate the radio. it has been brought in for service on for the shaking 3 times now, going on 4. jeep says it's fixed the problem by replacing the steering stabilizer/dampener. jeep knows it is happening and mentioned getting "jeep engineering" involved and have blacked out information on paperwork we received after repairs, concerned we would see the "contact/ email address". the first service visit they could not get the shaking to happen and "reset the steering to factory settings", "that it was a little off." the second service appointment the service department "couldn't get it to happen". they had the salesperson i purchased the vehicle from take the car for a ride and compare it to how his jl drove. they asked if a worker "could take the car home and drive it a few days". i agreed.it happened to the worker and they replaced the steering stabilizer/dampener the first time(on that second visit). the third service appointment, they said the "steering stabilizer/dampener was replaced with a faulty stabilizer""that there were still faulty new ones, they were going to replace it. the following day, its violently shaking. it happens in motion, haven't noticed it with turning. i have videos of the shaking happening to the steering and the issues with the radio.
Vehicle purchased new from dealership. within first 100 miles was traveling down hwy at approximately 70 miles per hour, i hit a bump in the road while bearing left. truck started shaking violently. steering wheel same. as truck slowed down shaking stopped... dealer replaced stability bar and stated problem was corrected... within first week of truck being returned, i was traveling on hwy, this time hit a bump in road while bearing right. truck started shaking violently to the point i barely avoided an accident with a vehicle to my front and another to my side... vehicle was returned to dealership, this time spoke with general manager, was told as of yet their is no solution. corporate will have to recommend a fix. i've owned this vehicle for approx 1 month and 2 weeks. it's been in dealers possession for this and numerous other problems for more than half that time. at time of first repair i asked dealership for repair paperwork, was told it was not ready, it would be mailed to me. at time of second i am still awaiting documentation from first incident which has still not been provided. first incident occurred 1/24/19. dealer kept vehicle for approximately 20 days. second incident occurred morning of 2/26/19 as of this writing.
The jeep wrangler has on multiple occasions had a "death wobble." the vehicle's steering system starts to shake violently at higher speeds. this is a brand new vehicle with no modifications and has already been taken to the dealership to address. they unfortunately have not been able to correct it. this is a dangerous occurrence and a recall should be issued soon so the violent shaking at high speeds is frightening.
Jeep was recalled in october over a track bar weld issue where some vehicles we improperly welded. mine had to go to the dealer 3x as the dealer was unsure what to do. was told it was fine. just received another recall that the recall may not have been done properly and will need to be reinspected. i have 0 faith in the safety of this jeep.
I have have the steering violently oscillate / wobble dozens of times since early december 2018. this always happens on the highway above 50mph after going over a bump or imperfection on the pavement. every time this has happened, i have taken the vehicle to the jeep dealer to be inspected. on december 17th 2018 branhaven jeep replaced the steering damper. it seem to work for a while and it came back in january. i took the vehicle back to branhaven jeep and they said that they had replaced the steering damper again with un upgrade part from jeep. i drove the vehicle for about 200 miles over the weekend and on the return trip, the issue was back and this time it was worse than ever. this is now the third time the vehicle is in the shop to deal with the same steering wobble complaint. i feel the vehicle is unsafe to drive and my girlfriend refuses to drive it anymore. the last time i drove the vehicle was january 21 2018 0n the day i had the worst steering wobble or oscillation i have ever experienced. i do not belive jeep / fca has a solution and wobble events are not due to worn parts as this is a new vehicle that just crossed over 5000 miles. my jeep is totally stock and has had no modifications of any kind!
