COLUMN 1

Recently reported STEERING problems on 2018 Jeep Wrangler

Loose steering causing vehicle drifting at highway speeds resulting in constantly correcting the vehicle to maintain straight line and staying in lane. vehicle drifts towards other lanes and vehicles which is very dangerous to drive. requires driver to correct steering wheel to stay in lane constantly.

This is the second time the vehicle has experienced a total computer failure while it was being driven. my fiance' was driving this time and lost power steering, brake assist, as well as the ability to shift gears or even turn off the engine. as before, indications are a complete failure of the can network - multiple cels and error messages, from fuel low to tpms fail to electronic start stop disabled to check shiftier, as well as a loss of power steering and the engine going into limp mode. the first time this happened i was doing 70mph on the freeway. it occurred at night, thankfully, as it caused me to swerve between lanes during the sudden loss of power/steering assist. if it had been during rush hour, i would have hit another vehicle. this time the computer failed while in a parking garage. thankfully it occurred after turning into a straight away as my fiance' took the entire length to stop due to the loss of breaking; she blew through a pedestrian walkway and could not stop and, if it had happened during a turn, she most likely would have hit a car or hit the edge of the parking garage. both times we were very lucky that we did not have an accident that resulted in major damage or a fatality. jeep has found 2 electrical wiring problems so far with this jeep and obviously there are additional wiring defects present in the vehicle.

Steering wheel automatically goes the opposite direction while in gear 1 or 2 when it is turned half way. this happens under parking conditions (difficult not to hit other cars); and turning in high traffic situations (very dangerous in congested areas). i lost control of the car steering (it was going the opposite direction such as in a skidding situation) on the highway getting on from an onramp (from first gear to second - from a stop sign) and almost steered into oncoming cars!! i have a video example of the problem that i can send via email if you need.

I just leased a jeep an immediately upon driving the jeep home i had problems steering the vehicle as i entered normal traffic speed. there is a noticeable steering dead zone (play) when the steering wheel is at-or-near centered position. furthermore, the vehicle does not seem to be able to drive in a straight line (the jeep wanders quite markedly on paved roads without constant correction. ) several times i went out of my lane. these two issues are present at all speeds but are especially noticeable at highway speeds. both issues compound and make the vehicle unsafe to drive requiring frequent micro-corrections which are hard to get right because of the aforementioned dead zone. i have been driving wrangler for 10 years so this is not because i am new to the vehicle . if i drive this jeep i will have an accident, its only a matter of time there is also half inch to full inch of play with the steering wheel in park. the steering wheel can be moved with no movement in the tires

Severe steering play, over an inch of deadspot total. very dangerous to drive on the interstate especially around 18 wheelers

New 2018 jeep wrangler sahara jl experiencing instability with the steering. at speeds above 40mph the vehicles steering requires constant compensation to keep it tracking straight. it is very concerning on narrowere, older highways where a small adjustments makes a big difference. there are numerous complaints regarding this vehicles' steering and it needs to be addressed by the manufacturer. the jeep is going to the dealership this week and my expectations that the issue will be addressed is very low.

Around 7000 miles we started to get a vibration that would last till we slowed down every time we hit a bump with our wrangler jl at highway speed. it has since turned into a violent shake that will literally rattle your teeth. you can feel the shake throughout the whole care and especially on the wheel. the bump in road does not have to be big and can be as small as the place where the road connects to an overpass. having to slow down to around 40 mph to get it to stop when all other traffic is traveling 60+ mph is scary and we are now worried for our safety. have taken the vehicle in to our jeep dealer 3 times, but they have not been able to resolve the issue. they did say that they currently have 3 other jl wranglers experiencing the same problem and they have yet to find a solution.

There is excessive play in the steering system. the steering system on this also has excessive wandering making it hard to anticipate where the jeep is going to go. this issue gets worse as speed increases. the jeep is unsafe to drive at highway speeds and i have almost been in multiple wrecks due to it. the jeep dealer has no fix for this and says it is normal. i will be looking for aftermarket fixes so i can drive my $50k jeep on the interstate without having to worry about wrecking at any moment.

Same complaint as many others. the steering has too much play and does not respond well. it becomes worse at highway speeds. it is very hard to control because it will drift then may over correct when you steer to maintain your lane. it has done this since day one.

I purchased this jeep brand new. i can hardly maintain my lane while traveling over 60mph on the highway. i am all over the road. i have to hold on tightly with two hands. i have owned several jeeps over the years. i have never had this issue. i have a video of the 1" in the play of my steering wheel while traveling at highway speeds. the jeep does not move or respond until you go past that 1" gap. i have also almost wrecked due to over correcting. a car came into my lane while on the interstate. i swerved, but due to the steering box not responding to what the steering wheel was doing, i almost flipped it. very scary. it is not fun to drive and i have contemplated getting rid of it.

Loose steering. large dead spot. off centered. very wobbly not stable. hard to drive in a straight line.

From the day i picked it up steering is dangerously loose at speeds above 45 mph. on winding backroads you have to struggle constantly to keep in your lane. people will die from this, it is that loose. my wife refuses to drive it after one trip. i contacted jeep and they told me there was a tsb for my jeep. the dealership said nothing was wrong and when i complained about the tsb they claimed they did it. there is no difference in the steering. i just reached 2000 miles. i can't afford to just get rid of it.

Violent steering wheel shaking and front end steering shaking when driving over road imperfections over 45 mph. loose and wandering steering resulting in multiple steering corrections to remain straight in line on a flat straight and leveled surface. wrangler was in dealership, not fixed, they seemed like they didn't want to deal with the issue and they are aware of this issue on other new jeeps. this issue has been ongoing since i bought the jeep.

Vehicle steering wonders at highway speeds requiring constant steering control from operator. as speed increases to interstate legal speed limits vehicle steers on its own repeatedly left to right back to left violently requiring operator to reduce speed to regain control of vehicle. if operator view momentarily looks at dash controls the vehicle wonders into lane of oncoming traffic. periods of high winds increases severity of vehicle wondering to higher levels of dangerous driving. i purchased this vehicle new and vehicle steering wondering has happened during every driving experience on state and federal high ways. currently this vehicle has 1071.0 miles on odometer.

If i hit a bump at highway speeds, the steering wheel and entire front end bump violently until i reduce speed below 40 miles per hour. at that point the shaking stops. during this shaking the car is very difficult to steeer or control. my jeep is new and it began at 2000 miles (maybe the first time i traveled on the highway) and still occurs. i now have 6000 miles. the tires are set to the proper pressure and i have not done any modifications.

Steering is loose and 1 inch movements of the steering wheel in either direction yield no steering effect at all. car wanders in left and right and the "dead" zone in the steering wheel make it difficult to control. other drivers must think i am driving drunk. not safe or comfortable.

Loose and wandering steering. when you turn the steering wheel their is about two inches of play before the wheels move making it difficult to drive and unsafe. fca has installed 4 steering gears, 2 steering dampers and a track bar. fca does not know how to fix this issue. we have been dealing with this issue for over 8 months. vehicle has been parked for the last 3 months.

Steering wonders side to side difficult to steer straight plus play in steering wheel

The steering wheel has a lot of play, and feels unsafe at highway speeds. the lack of feel in the wheel could case high speed lost of control and is unsafe for driving.

As other's have reported, there is a dead spot in the center of the steering wheel. the vehicle wanders excessively and requires quite a bit of correction due to the dead spot. this is not safe and needs to be fixed.

There is a noticeable steering dead zone (play) when the steering wheel is at-or-near centered position. furthermore, the vehicle does not seem to be able to drive in a straight line (wandering) on paved roads without constant correction. these two issues are present at all speeds but are especially noticeable at highway speeds. both issues compound and make the vehicle unsafe to drive at highway speeds, requiring frequent micro-corrections ' which are hard to get right because of the aforementioned dead zone.

Steering is very 'loose' especially with highway driving at increased speeds. so much so that it is very scary when cars are in the next lane. there is a lot of 'play' in the steering required to keep the vehicle steady in the lane but even slight corrections cause the vehicle to go too far in the other direction. this started with my drive home from the dealership on 8/25/18. i avoid highway driving as much as possible. i have not experienced this issue with our 2017 jeep rubicon.

New jeep wrangler jl has more play in the steering than any other vehicle i have driven in the past 20 years. at highway speeds there is over 1 inch of play before the vehicle begins to turn. as a result, one tends to overcorrect causing a change in direction which makes the car wander more than i believe to be safe. started on day of delivery in may, 2018 and continues to this day. apparently not all wranglers experience this, but some very clearly do. problem exists at all speeds (in motion) especially aware of it going straight on highway.

I am experiencing a dead spot in the steering of roughly 1-2 inches at both city and highway speeds (60+ mph) where the steering is unresponsive. as well as "wandering" steering where any variations in the road/wind etc cause the vehicle to veer off course. with these two problems, i am constantly correcting the vehicle to the point where it is extremely uncomfortable and unsafe. i have found numerous other people that are experiencing the same problem. the following forum describes the issues reported : https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/my-steering-issues-have-been-fixed.12843/

My daughter was driving the brand new jeep wrangler unlimited sport we purchased and she called me in a panic because her "steering wheel locked up!" on a city road as she was driving. she could not steer to the left at all. she pulled over to right, shut down the car and when restarted it did not stop the issue. this is extremely unsafe! i researched online that there is a known steering lock problem with a tsb 18-19-02-ds with 2018 jeep wrangler, yet, our dealer says he's "never heard of it".

Steering has a noticeable 'dead-spot' while driving and requires large amounts of input to correct normal road drift resulting in an almost jerking or sawing motion of several inches in each direction to make small corrections. the large amount of steering input required from the driver then causes the vehicle to sway laterally on the road. this becomes increasingly dangerous as speed increases. the attached service report incorrectly states they were 'unable to duplicate' the condition in a like vehicle. in actuality the other 2018 jeep wrangler i drove exhibited the same behavior; requiring larger than normal inputs to make small corrections. i was told by the service foreman it's just inherent in the design of the wrangler.

This wrangler cannot be kept in straight path when traveling either at low or high speeds. there is an excessive amount of "play" in the steering wheel amplified by higher winds and cross traffic. this "wandering" requires constant steering correction resulting in a continuous struggle to maintain control.

While driving on the highway with my wife at 60mph the steering got loose to the point where the car was losing control i needed to pull off the highway. the 2018 wrangler jk has a new steering system design that creates a dangerously loose and oversteer condition that will increase rollovers at high speeds we would like to formally document the steering on the jl is flawed, dangerous, and designed at a level of looseness where the drivers control of the vehicle is dramatically impaired. this vehicle should be recalled and or the electronic software package should be redesigned. with this email i am notifying fca that they have a material safety hazard on this product. the excessive play in steering risks oversteer at low speeds and increased rollover % probability at 55 mph and higher this is not acceptable. the change in tires makes no difference in performance. this is documenting complaint number 2 from the [xxx] family. please do not allow families with children to drive this vehicle without a warning or the teen age demographic that loves to drive wranglers. Steering is extremely loose and require constant correction to stay in a straight line. there's a huge dead spot in it as well, i feel like i'm in a cartoon driving.

While driving at slow or high speed it seems there is a "dead spot" in the steering, about an inch. when i turn i have to turn back the other way way to correct. always turning the wheel from one side to the other. either there is a 'dead spot" or the steering is too slow to respond.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. while driving at any speed, the steering wheel can be turned up to two inches right and left and the wheels do not turn.up to 4 inches of slack , free play in the steering wheel. steering wheel must be constantly moving to stay on a straight path. there was no warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to two different dealers, including patterson chrysler dodge (903-218-4651, located at 1611 us highway 259 n, kilgore, tx 75662). the dealer was aware of the failure and stated that there was no remedy. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 900. the vin was not provided. *tr*jb

Wandering and loose. steering does not track on center but needs to be continuously corrected. immediately after purchase was taken to dealer to check alignment and was told this was normal. at speed it is very uncomfortable to drive as it will wander and has a dead spot when steering wheel is left at the center position.

Loose steering and drift while driving. unable to maintain a straight line without constant steering correction. very noticeable at freeway speeds as the vehicle will want to drive left or right immediately after you stop correcting steering. started at 19 miles total on the vehicle. as soon as i purchased it and got on the freeway it felt like driving on ice. flat out dangerous to drive, right from the factory.

When driving at speeds in excess of 45mph, there is significant play in the steering wheel. as a result, the vehicle is difficult to control in a straight line. this is dangerous. because of the play, you have to constantly move the steering wheel a significant amount left or right to find where the point is that impacts the direction of the vehicle. this needs your attention because fca is ignoring the issue. i have visited two different dealers to look for a solution and also spoken the customer service at fca. the dealers' inspections did not discover any mechanical issue. in speaking to fca and the technicians at the dealerships, they indicated that it is a software issue, but cannot do anything until fca directs them. some owners of the wrangler have coerced their dealership to flash the power train control module. according to those individuals this software update has solved the issue. but i have not been able to find a dealer to do this without fca direction.

While driving, especially on the highway, the steering has about an inch of play moving left or right where no change occurs to the tires. so i could driving and move the steering wheel to the left slightly and the tire doesnt move left. so when driving at highway speeds going through curves i tend to drift a bit due to this.

New jeep and steering seems to wander while have play in the steering wheel. can feel very sketchy at times.

I am experiencing a dead spot in the steering of roughly 2-3 inches at highway speeds (60+ mph) where the steering is unresponsive. as well as "wandering" steering where any variations in the road/wind etc cause the vehicle to veer off course dramatically. with these two problems, i am constantly correcting the vehicle to the point where it is extremely uncomfortable and unsafe. i have driven numerous other jeep wranglers (prior models) and have never had such issues. i have found numerous other people that are experiencing the same problem. the following forum describes the issues reported and the failed "fixes" that the service departments are rendering: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/my-steering-issues-have-been-fixed.12843/

Merging on to highway, steering stiffened then loosened. steering wheel had to be at 45-90 degree angle to maintain straight track. at home, i noticed the track bar mount had separated from the frame. the weld on the outboard side is on mount instead of the seam between the mount and frame. the front and rear welds on the mount are cracked. only intact weld is the inboard weld.

Steering very loose and wanders all over the road. you need to constantly make corrections while steering. seems like the jeep wants to wander and is very hard to control. ive only had the jeep for a week.

Loose steering, tracking left or right never straight at any speed.

Steering is very loose with a large dead spot. the vehicle wanders especially at highway speeds. to correct wandering the dead spot causes you to need to correct with a greater movement of the steering wheel. the vehicle and steering seems very loose and when hitting road imperfections the vehicle can seem to float.

Loose steering causing vehicle drifting at highway speeds. i have to constantly correct the vehicle from drifting. extreme play and dead spots in steering wheel. this needs to happen in order to maintain straight line and staying in lane. vehicle drifts towards other lanes and vehicles which is very dangerous to drive. requires driver to correct steering wheel to stay in lane constantly.

The steering on a brand new jeep wrangler jl rubicon is very loose with a dead spot at the top. it is extremely challenging to maintain a lane when driving, especially at highway speed. under hard braking the vehicle will pull one way or the other because it feels like nothing is keeping the front wheels straight, correcting it is scary as the vehicle sways significantly.

Owinng jeep wranglers for years, i am accustomed to loose steering. however, the one i just purchased and have less 1000 miles on,has a steering issue that requires constant correction, especially at speeds in excess of 55 mph and expecially around curves, is excessive and unsafe. it is much more noticable that previous models and extremely unsafe. there is a bulletin, released by jeep acknowleding the problem, but apparently mine doesn't make the dates (mine was made a month after the bulletin expired). it has been to a dealership for recalibration and/or reprogramming (as the tech bulletin states should be done) but was told nothing was wrong and it is within specs. other owners of this model are having the same issue and nothing is being done about it. i have driven different friend's jeeps, same year and model, and most have this issue. only one that i have driven did not have it. fca (fiat chrysler) need to address this issue as soon as possible.

The vehicle experiences loose steering and wandering while driving.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. while driving at high speeds, the vehicle would not steer straight without moving the steering wheel left and right. the contact mentioned that there was a dead spot in the steering wheel. the vehicle was taken to arrigo dodge chrysler jeep ram margate (2250 sr 7, margate, fl 33063, (954) 633-5365) where the contact was informed that it was a characteristic of the vehicle. no further assistance was provided. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 2,500.

At speeds of 60 miles per hour and greater, when vehicle hits a bump in the road the entire front end violently vibrates causing loss of steering control. very difficult to steer however resolves itself after hitting another bump, slowing down or after a minute or so. this occurs on high way driving and it is very difficulty to slow down. first noticed early august 2018 and still persists today. been to dealer twice and they found nothing the first time second time they say it is a steering damper that has air bubbles in it. they have not corrected the problem and it is getting worse..

Steering has excessive free play on center. the steering wheel moves 1" is each direction before wheels respond. it if very difficult to keep the vehicle in the lane at highway speeds. the vehicle has 1,100 miles on it. the steering was this way from new. took the vehicle to the dealer on 9/24 to be repaired. dealer said it is operating as designed. many 2018 jeep wrangler jl owners are complaining about the same issue on the internet forums.

Steering is excessively erratic / wandering / loose especially at highway speeds.

The car doesn't track straight without continual adjustments with the steering wheel. it will drift a little right, then i nudge the steering wheel to the left and it will drift left and have to correct to the right again.
