We have classified the 729 complaints from 2018 Jeep Wrangler about STEERING into the following categories.
In cold weather the steering locks while driving. i am able to turn the steering wheel about 1/2 an inch and that is it. the issue lasted for 6 miles while i was in traveling in montana. i was driving below 25 mph on paved and gravel roads. the temperature was below 35 degrees. i love in california and the weather have not been that cold so i hasn't occurred since then. unfortunately i do not have a video, i was too concentrated on not crashing.
Hello.this is regarding my 2018 jeep wrangler jl rubicon. i have been reading extensively about the frame welding recall (issued 10/5/18) that unfortunately does include my vehicle. we spent over fifty five thousand dollars on this jeep, and are extremely disappointed in the build quality. just to make sure that the welds are bad, i looked under the jeep and several extremely important welds (some involving the steering bracket) were not done properly, and will fail. also, some of the welds have several pocks in them and will develop rust. if a weld isn't done properly (or repaired) properly, it will fail and that for fca to release a vehicle, in this condition to the general public is disgusting. i have a wife and a baby on the way' my wife no longer feels safe in our new jeep. i am writing you to voice my concern and warn others about this unsafe vehicle. we no longer drive the jeep and it sits in our driveway. i cannot drive a vehicle that may fail structurally and injure or kill us.
Same issue as many others: loose steering especially at highway speeds, and dead spots off center. requires constant correction to stay in lane, which at highway speeds and next to trucks can be terrifying. former wrangler jk owner, so i know it's not a "jeep thing". seen many reports of lose ball joints, weak track bar welds, and incorrect alignments, in addition to the new aluminum gearbox, as contributing to the issue. jeep needs a comprehensive steering fix for the jl, and soon. i believe this issue started for builds around april and later, in response to reports steering for some was locking up. i believe jeep went the other direction and simply made the steering loose instead of fixing the actual lockup issue. jeep must come up with a true solution that results in no lock ups and tight, reliable, solid steering.
The steering is loose requiring me to constantly correct the path the vehicle is taking. there is inches of play in the steering wheel with no corresponding reaction. the dealer has no solution. this vehicle is a newly purchased 2018 wrangler with approximately 1300 mile on the odometer. i do not want an accident because of this.
While the vehicle is in motion the steering is very loose. you can move the steering wheel left and right about 4 inches in play and the wheels never turn at all. this makes drifting, especially at high speeds, a huge safety risk. you must overcorrect the wheel in order to stay in your lane while driving. the caster nut and gear box nut seem to come from the factory extremely loose causing this potentially life threatening safety hazard.
Jeep wanders all over the road like steering is loose - hard to keep going in a straight line. felt it during test drive but thought it was "just a jeep thing". after driving many miles and talking with others it appears it is not normal. thousands of reports about it on various forums including car and driver magazine. actually feels like jeep is out of control at times. scary. dealer claims no issue since no tsb/recall and nothing they can do about it. this is a safety risk!
At highway speeds after hitting a small bump, vehicle begins to shake significantly and it only goes away after slowing down considerably. similar issue to what others are describing and nearly identical to the jeep "death wobble" that is fairly well documented. started at only 9000 miles after zero modifications or off-road use. dealer reproduced and indicated that the steering stabilizer is "shot" and replacement part is backordered with no estimated delivery date.
At highway speeds over 70mph, the steering becomes vague to the point of a loss of fine control. without steering input and without significant cross winds, the front wheels will steer quickly from left to right and back. the change in direction is so drastic that onstant and careful attention is required to avoid unexpected lane changes. i've owned two other wranglers (2000 and 2007) and this is not a condition based on steering geometry or 4wd systems. this is a life-threateningly dangerous condition and requires immediate government oversight and interdiction.
Jeep wrangler unlimited sahara steering wheel / system has loose and dead spot..you can turn the wheel 1-2" either way and nothing happens. jeep wanders all over the road at highway speeds due to constant steering corrections. had to dealership and they aligned and performs tsb..didnt correct issue. .the jeep could cause an accident due to the uncertain tracking and constant steering corrections needed.
Ua5/nhtsa 18v-675 track bar weld recall. i had the required inspection done two weeks ago, but dealer won't do the welding. i have been trying to make jeep customer service make the local dealer fix this very serious issue, but nothing happens. i've even tried a dealer 1 hour 40 minute drive from me here in arizona, they won't do it either.
I purchased my 2018 jeep wrangler unlimited jl in june of 2018. within the first month of having the vehicle the problems began. i initially had windshield seals that were missing so the jeep would fill up with water from behind the dashboard. the dealership said they "fixed the problem" and then my windshield cracked because they didn't install properly, now it is leaking again behind the steering wheel. this will be my 3rd visit to the dealership for this problem. then the "death wobble" began around 8/9,000 miles, almost causing multiple accidents. my vehicle has been in two dealerships since october 2018 trying to fix all of the issues occurring. the jeep is being sent to the dealership for the 5th time on april 10, 2019 for ongoing steering issues. the damper (recall) in the vehicle was replaced 4 times without success and the steering continues to worsen. keep in mind, the damper recall fix was only available at my dealership in january of 2019. i now have 18,000 miles on the vehicle, loose and wobbling steering, can't maintain a lane while driving, vibration and wobbling while breaking, the emergency break is no longer engaging (manual transmission), and just put in a complaint with jeep a few weeks ago after little success with the dealership. jeep is telling me that my unsafe, unstable vehicle has too many miles on it to buyback. i have had the vehicle for less than 10 months and have never had this many issues with any of my other vehicles in my life. the vehicle will be going back to the original dealership i purchased it from for the 5th time for steering issues and 3rd time for the windshield seals, along with many other issues. i no longer feel safe in my own vehicle in which i am paying a high price for every month.
Unsettling wobble ,shake at highway speeds while changing lanes and hitting a bump , 2 different steering dampers installed ,problem still exist , dealership is in denial . i'm a certified master mechanic ,this vehicle is unsafe , i believe chrysler knows this , according to reports ,no one has died yet ,but someone is going too
Steering is sloppy. the vehicle wanders and takes significant effort and constant adjustment of the steering wheel to keep it in the lane. too much free play in the steering. this happens at any speed even at 30mph.
With about 1100 miles on this brand new jeep i hit a bump on the highway at 65-70 mph. the jeep started to shake violently and i had all i could do to hold on to the steering wheel. if you slow down to under 40 mph the shaking stops. ever since anytime i am on a highway at 60 mph or more even a bridge joint will cause the jeep to go into it's shake, rattle, and roll routine. i can always stop it by immediately slowing down but in heavy boston traffic this is simply not a safe alternative. for a $40,000 vehicle that has hardly been driven yet i think this is a manufacturing defect that is extremely dangerous. i hope you will take it seriously as this defect has been going on in jeeps for years and it has not been addressed. if you don't think it's a safety issue you take it on rte 128 at rush hour and get back to me when it gives you a heart attack.
I've had three rubicons in the past and the steering on my new 2018 rubicon jl unlimited is horrible. the car wanders left and right, there is much too much play in the steering wheel. it feels very unsafe to drive. i took it to the dealer and they acknowledge that the car steering is very unstable, yet they don't know how to fix it. it happens constantly. but the faster you go the more unstable it feels. it has been happening since i purchased it.
2018 jeep wrangler jl unlimited steering is very sloppy at all speeds. steering is very soft and unresponsive causing the vehicle to wander from side to side in the lane while driving at various speeds. steering does not hold position, or remain centered, vehicle drifts in the lane in both directions at various speeds. almost constant correction is needed to keep vehicle moving in a somewhat straight line.
Extreme wobble and shaking at highway speeds which continues well past the road imperfections that caused the specific type of suspension travel. started under 1000 miles. happens several times every workday - can be replicated. this vehicle is completely stock and brand new. if driving around a slight turn with small bumps the vehicle starts shaking violently and keeps shaking for 20-30 seconds until the traveling speed is reduced to 50 mph which is not a safe speed at times. 2 steady hands must be on the steering wheel to maintain control and changing lanes is not possible. had to make an avoidance maneuver during the shaking and almost lost control while traveling 60 mph. this car is not safe to operate and the problem happens multiple times per day. unknown components and parts cause the extreme shaking/wobbling. this statement is to document the problem; there will be videos and repair invoices in the future but several dealerships have told me there are no fixes for the problem called death wobble. i am currently on a "waiting list" for a repair attempt. i will call for an update with the dealership 11/30/18. the tires are stock and at proper pressure. there have been no modifications to the vehicle.
Soon after purchasing my 2018 jl wrangler in april i began experiencing steering issues. when veering left or right to change lanes, take a curve, etc. the steering wheel would 'lock' up and i'd need both hands to pull it back to keep the jeep in my lane. it only lasts for a few seconds. i had received notification that it was time for my first maintenance appointment after purchasing the jeep, so i called to schedule that and also told them about the steering issue. one day prior to the appointment, my dashboard alert notified me to "service the electronic stability control". since i already had the appointment, i knew this could be addressed at that time. then a few days later i received the safety recall u48 for steering intermediate shaft. i called the dealership and let them know that i had received the recall notice and that i already had an appointment scheduled. i took the jeep in for the appointment and the problem appeared to be fixed at first. then it happened again about a month later and then again just this past week. it's a scary situation. this last occurrence i was taking a curve in the road with traffic coming the other direction. the steering wheel 'locked up' and i had to forcefully use both hands to pull it back into the lane.
Excess play in steering when driving straight (at all speeds) as well as steering drifts or wanders while driving straight. no issues while in a turn. no problem while holding a steady turn on a freeway off ramp. i've had the dealer replace the track bar as well as install the new steering damper (under recall).
The steering is very loose and vehicle wanders all over. problem is especially bad at highway speeds and requires constant input to remain straight. steering wheel has about 2 inches of dead space so corrections are cumbersome. steering will lock up at highways speeds and then suddenly release. this has happened 5 times and caused me to skid 2x and go off highway one.
Steering is loose and vehicle wanders all over the road. constant correction of the wheel is required to stay in lane. most noticeable at highway speeds but is apparent at all speeds.
There is a dead spot in the steering at center . when i'm driving i have to constantly correct the steering to make it go straight . the problem gets worse at higher speeds . the vehicle wonders and i'm sure it looks like there's a drunk driver behind the wheel . i can move the steering wheel 15 degrees back and forth in either direction while driving and not get a response from the steering . that's the dead spot . this makes it difficult to keep the vehicle in a lane .
I purchased this 2018 unlimited in june, brand new, with under 500 miles it took to drive it from mi. at approx. 15,000 miles i heard a rattle, that sounded like a loose heat shield, took it in and techs found nothing, said no heat shields. within about 2 weeks i was driving on the highway, at highway speed, as i came over bridge crossings my jeep would shake uncontrollably and i was not able to steer. at first it would only happen occassionally, then it got worse, to the point of moving out of the lane i was driving in and into the berm and/or into the lane next to me. the whole jeep would shake uncontrollably for longer than 1-3 minutes. i did notice that if crossing over bridges in a straight away, the wobble was less severe than if i was in a slight curve, or angle. also, i did notice that if i took my foot off the gas pedal before, during and for a short period after bridges, the jeep doesn't have the wobble as often. this may need to be checked, the techs are replacing parts they are being told to by jeep, but jeep doesn't know what is causing the death wobble, maybe it isn't directly relayed to only the front steering damper.
Have a front end and steering wheel shake at highway speeds when hitting bumps.
The car tends to wander at highway speed( 65mph) . when driving at highway speed i am constantly adjusting the steering to maintain lane. most cars do this to some degree, but this vehicle does it to excess. i consider this a safety issue.
Jeep wonders when on the highway. feel like i need to always hang on with 2 hands
My jeep wrangler unlimited jl, has 976 miles on it. since day 1, the steering wheel has had a lot of play (an inch or more left to right). it will not track straight and it wanders on the road. it is difficult to keep it in the lane without a lot of correction. it is uncomfortable and is unsafe. jeep tech at dealer said jeep told him that it was purposely built that way -- i think not! no vehicle should have that amount of play - it is unsafe. driving between two simis on i-285 in atlata is very scray as it is difficult to keep the jeep in the lane. dangerous. getting no help from dealer.
After purchasing my jeep rubicon i notice that the vehicle steering wandered on the highway. i was not able to keep the vehicle straight without it wandering from side to side. to much play in the steering wheel. i had less than 100 miles. i scheduled an appointment with the jeep dealership to have it inspected. the jeep was inspected and i was told they found no problem with it, however i did some research and soon learned that others had been experiencing the the same problem. to fix it one owner took his in to his dealer and they made an adjustment in the steering to a ( -8 ) and it went away, but it made his steering harder to turn.
Loose steering, almost dangerous handling on highways when passing vehicles, especially trucks. difficult to keep in lane.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 18v675000 (steering); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. westbury jeep chrysler dodge ram (100 jericho turnpike, jericho, ny 11753, (516) 336-4784) was made aware of the recall and stated that the parts were unavailable. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue and provided the contact with case number: 57197558. the contact had not experienced a failure. parts distribution disconnect.
Death wobble!!! my brand new jeep with only 9400 miles on her goes into such an almost uncontrollable shake when on highway after i hit a bump. my speed is at approx 65-70. dealer telling me not 'their problem'
While driving steering wanders and drifts all over. constantly having to see saw wheel back and forth to stay straight. worse on two lane or crowned asphalt roads.
Vehicle has a dead spot in steering. about 1 inch from side to side where steering is unresponsive. issue becomes progressively worse as speeds increase. at highway speeds it is very difficult to keep vehicle going straight in one lane. steering requires near constant input and over correction which causes more swaying. any driving is difficult to with one hand. when on highway passing a large truck, the loose steering is very difficult to control and makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. dealership service department states the steering as normal and drives similar to new vehicles on the lot. there are videos on youtube documenting this issue with independent technicians coming up with non oem endorsed repairs. the service advisor states that these repairs can not be performed because fca has not authorized any repairs and would void warranty. please investigate so that fca can recall these vehicles for a safety issue that manufacturer is ignoring.
My jeep has been drifting and steering has been awful on highway, esc and service lights came on. all welds under the vehicle are absolutely horrible, and i absolutely do not feel safe risking my life and my child's life in this vehicle with welds and components that look as if they will break or fail at any moment
Moving, interstate & extremely busy highway. sometimes in a turn, sometimes going straight. hit a bump such as a highway or interstate bridge and vehicle and front end shake and shimmy. requires you to slow down to under minimum interstate speed from 70 +- to 30 +- for shaking to stop. radio, makes a buzzing sound and resets time. it seems to be shorting out. radio electrical issue happens while moving and stationary.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. after the vehicle was purchased brand new on september 23, 2018, the contact stated that the steering was malfunctioning and the vehicle would not remain centered while driving. the vehicle was taken to sterling chrysler jeep dodge ram (5504 i-49 frontage rd, opelousas, la 70570). the dealer test drove the vehicle, but it was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact went to another unknown dealer and they determined that the vehicle was out of alignment. the contact called the manufacturer and they stated that they were conducting an investigation. the failure mileage was 2,700.
Steering control became significantly impaired & difficult to correct at highway speeds / moderate right hand curve / minor pavement imperfections, which almost resulted in multi-vehicle accident. overall, vehicle control at highway speeds is very poor. steering wheel has a dead spot, and highway wonder can be significant. with no steering wheel movement the vehicle's trajectory can change, which requires continuous corrections.
Since the day that i drove my 2018 jeep wrangler unlimited rubicon off of the lot, the steering has been loose where you can move the steering wheel 1 1/2 inches both ways and it does nothing. the vehicle exhibits excessive drifting and a significant dead-spot in the center. i have visited the dealership 3 times for this issue with the service advisor and he finally showed me a document that they are aware of the issue. i have only 500 miles on the truck because we are scared to drive it and hurt ourselves or someone else.
The jeep is uncontrollable at high speeds and the steering is highly flawed. we were not told when we picked up the vehicle two weeks ago that there was a problem with the steering. there is excessive play in the wheel so there is about 10 degrees of turn where the steering is not affected. the vehicle basically bounces back and forth in the lane and it is hard to control. the faster, the more difficult to control. when our son was trying to merge onto a highway he said it became uncontrollable and he the jeep started oscillating back and forth until he lost control. the jeep spun out and luckily no one was hurt. the vehicle cannot drive in a straight line, takes excessive input to control, and is unsafe for low time drivers. we have taken the jeep back four times and the dealership now has possession of the vehicle with no fix available. they have not admitted nor denied there is a safety problem other than saying they are working with fca reps to find a solution. this vehicle should not be on us highways. this is an unsafe vehicle and there is significant risk to life and property. these vehicles are being delivered with a flawed steering system that has excessive play which invites loss of control at high speeds. please immediately take these vehicles off the road. jeep should not be allowed to sell them as they are totally unsafe. the jeep jl wrangler (2018) is unsafe!
Steering very hard to control and keep stray... excessive play in the steering wheel continously steering from 10-2 position to keep straight... jerls off to one side or the other randomly... very unstable and unsafe
The steering is horrendous! it's all over the road! wanders and feels very loose. when driving it takes total concentration to stay in the lane. non stop correcting.something has to be corrected noticed it from day 1 . it has only 600 miles on it so far and i am scared to drive it! going to the dealer 10/15
My jeep rubicon jl floats or drifts as i am driving it. it makes for a hard drive on long drives and i must look like i am driving drunk to others on the road. it is even worse in wind and it's windy a lot where i live. it was very scary to drive at first. i do not like it or feel it is safe at all. having never owned a jeep i thought it was just me or that the tires needed to be worn down a bit. the problem remains. while listening to fm/am stations the volume is wacky going low and high making for lousy listening. when the ac comes on on the higher setting my jeep sounds like i am getting ready for lift off. very loud. one lever on my seat near the headrest that controls the ability for a passenger to get in my two door almost immediately became detached and i don't even have my back seat in a lot so it doesn't get used a lot. i have an automatic and it does not shift smoothly. today i pulled out of a parking spot and my jeep surged forward faster than it should have and it often shifts poorly from park into drive and reverse. the sensor or heater electric wire on the inside of the tailgate window detached.
Steering wheel off center and tracks left to right on a straight road. steering correction is constantly required to maintain directional stability. build date march 2018. took delivery from phillips chrysler jeep in ocala florida on sept. 20 2018. present miles on odometer 750 miles. we mentioned to dealership service department immediatle after purchase and was advised steering system was not calibrated correctly at factory and dealer proceeded to realign front end. however steering wheel is now off center in oposite direction. they also indicated that off tracking is symptamatic with all terrain tires.
While making a left turn at low speeds it seemingly felt like my power steering was disabled and i had to crank my wheel in order to make the turn. a few hours later, i get home and about 100 yards from my apartment, the 'service electronic stability control ' warning pops up. i have only had this vehicle 2 days and less than 300 miles. it's safe to say, i'm extremely unhappy with this vehicle.
Tl* the contact leased a 2018 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the steering wheel felt extremely loose while making turns or driving above 45 mph. the dealer (heritage chrysler dodge jeep ram parkville, 9219 harford rd, parkville, md 21234, 1-877-391-7850) was unable to diagnose the failure. the dealer indicated that the manufacturer had not yet developed a software update for the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v343000 (steering). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.
As i was driving on the interstate in miami florida my steering wheel turned to the right but my vehicle kept going straight and i heard a loud clunk from the front left of the vehicle. i was able guide the vehicle off of the interstate with great difficulty and took it to the closest dealership. there i was able to take a picture of what looks like a failed weld on what you could call a track bar or steering bracket. *tt *as
When hitting a bump at highway speeds the steering wheel shakes out of my hand. i have to slow down to get it to stop. happens everyday when i go to and from work no matter what i do i can avoid the bumps for over passes.
I have a brand new jeep jlu with street tires and no lift. when on the highway, i started feeling the steering wheel violently shake. i slowed down and the shaking stopped. this happened multiple times. i called the gm of the dealer i purchased the vehicle from and he asked if i had ever owned a jeep before and that this is normal. he called it the 'death wobble'. he told me i will have to deal with it because it happens. he also said i had to balance my tires every oil change to ensure it doesn't happen as often. this is a serious concern for me and my family. this was not disclosed prior to sale and was not mentioned in the maintenance requirements and expected costs. i have asked for them to buy back the vehicle and pay back all payments made. *dt*jb
I purchased on september 14, 2018 that has what is called the "death wobble". it only occurs when driving over 60 miles an hour. it is caused by a faulty steering damper. i brought it in for the first time in december 4, 2018 when i could not gain control of the car and almost wrecked. it was the 6 time it had happened. the car was seized immediately, it was a safety issue. i was told to clean the car out and they couldn't tell me when i would have it returned. i also was having them check the brakes as they had been squeaking. i did not receive the car back until january 8 2019. at that time, i was told it was fine. the brakes continued to squeak and when it snowed, i found out the defroster was not in working order. i was told the defroster part was on back order (still not fixed and its april 1, 2019) and they grinded the pads or rotors due to a glaze on them. the brakes were soft and still squeaking. on february 20 they said they would order new brakes. march 1, brakes locked up and i almost wrecked. i pumped them and they worked after that. i immediately drove the car there and left it. the brakes were replaced, and i picked the car up on the march 7, 2019. march 16, 2019 i was going over the bridge at 65 miles an hour and the "death wobble" started again. i asked my husband to drive it and it did it to him as well at about 65 miles an hour as he went over a bump. we left town on sunday march 17 and did not return until the 22. on march 23, 2019 we brought the car in. the technician confirmed it was the steering wheel damper was faulty again. to this day i still do not have the car and have been told that they have a "new" part. this will be the 3rd time. ddocuments, do not show every time i was in there nor what was really happening. it said my brakes were soft and didn't mention that they locked up and ...
At 3 months old and 3000 miles, my 2018 jl started exhibiting the "death wobble" symptoms. it always happens at a specific highway speed--between 55-70 mph when i hit certain expansion joints on the highway. i feel it in the wheel, and it oscillates throughout the front end of the vehicle. i have to slow down for it to stop. if i don't slow down or pull to the right of the highway, it escalates into a violent shake. the vehicle is completely stock with no modifications. it has never even been off the road. in response, fca issued a replacement steering stabilizer. the replacement stabilizer masked the issue for three weeks, but now the wobble is coming back just as it had before. again, to stop the vehicle i have to slow down to 40-50 mph on the highway. this is extremely dangerous, and fca is being incredibly reluctant to acknowledge and address this serious issue.
