Problems with 2018 Jeep Wrangler STEERING

On average, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler starts to “feel” problems with the STEERING and its various aspects after 6 311 miles.

Components Affected by STEERING Issues

We have classified the 729 complaints from 2018 Jeep Wrangler about STEERING into the following categories.

COLUMN 1

Recently reported STEERING problems on 2018 Jeep Wrangler

There have been three separate events that occured related to the front steering shaking on the vehicle. two occurred before i had the recall done called 02v41182 steering damper. driving ~60 mph, ~30 degrees f, and after hitting a bump. i then took it in for service for the work covered under the steering dampener to be fixed. approximately 5 minutes after leaving the dealer, i was driving and the issue occurred again for the third time. i am scared for the safety of my life and integrity of the steering system as all three events occurred on the the highway.

While driving our 2018 wrangler jl in 20-30 degree temperature the steering assist locked up, causing my wife to drive the vehicle off of the road while in a slow sweeping curve. after a second or two the steering re-engaged as she was trying to steer back onto the road and she suddenly veered back onto the road. a few seconds later it happened again. fortunately nothing was struck and no one was injured. after the vehicle continued to warm up the lockup did not occur again. this was 3 weeks ago. two days ago, while starting out driving in mid 30 degree temperatures the steering again locked up for about a second before reengaging. all instances occurred after the jeep was sitting outside in the cold and started for the first time that day. both events occurred within the first 4-5 minutes of driving at speeds in the 45-50mph range while making turns to the wheel. the big danger here is that if the vehicle is in a turn and the steering goes out, the driver could try and turn hard on the steering wheel to regain control and if the steering assist kicks back in, an oversteer situation could occur causing the vehicle to roll over or cross over into oncoming traffic. fca has already issued a tsb for the possible problem (08-092-18) which i will now contact my local dealer to see if they will investigate.

We bought this vehicle from hoffer jeep in topeka, ks. the vehicle was won buy a person at a casino event so we are the 2nd owner. the vehicle had, i believe under 2k miles, upon our purchase. since, we have owned the vehicle it has consistently had a "death wobble". i simply cannot count how many times at or under mandated highway speeds this vehicle has entered a 'death wobble". the most recent was from returning from manhattan ks to kansas city the vehicle entered a "death wobble" no less than 4 times. the last time i was driving 5 miles under the 75mph speed limit when hitting some road chatter, nothing significant, caused uncontrollable chatter in front wheels, axle, generating strong vibration through the steering column and wheel. i released the accelerator and the vehicle came out of the "death wobble" at 27mph, on an incredibly busy highway. this was/is unsafe at highway speeds. the dangers it caused could have been catastrophic in nature and need to be addressed before someone is killed. this vehicle is stock and has not had its suspension, tires, etc., adjusted or manipulated in any shape, fashion, or form. please advise on how this matter should be dealt with going forward? thanks

Tight steering at highway speeds (over 60mph) most likely to happen in colder temperatures. to give you an idea: you are driving on the highway and want to switch lanes. it will feel as if your steering wheel is locked and that you cannot steer it to the next lane. you will have trouble keeping your vehicle straight on the highway as well, constantly veering to the right. this vehicle feels very dangerous to drive at highway speeds. took the vehicle in to the dealer 3 times, with the same " we cannot reproduce the issue" run around. i am certain that there is an issue and hope jeep (fca) owns up and issues a recall.

The morning of feb 6, 2020, i was driving my 2018 jl (approx 16k mileage) on the highway at ~65 mph when the steering all of a sudden locked up going into a right bend in the highway. suddenly i was unable to turn the vehicle to the right to stay in the middle lane and ended halfway in the left fast lane headed straight for the concrete highway median barriers. thank goodness there were no cars on the highway next to me in the left lane that the unresponsive steering forced me into. after i slowed down, the steering went back to normal and i was able to get over to the right hand lane without incident and exit the highway. i have not felt comfortable driving on the highway or having my kids in the jeep since. the steering lockup on the highway was frightening; i feel very lucky to have escaped what looked like an imminent high speed highway accident with my own vehicle and possibly other cars nearby. separately, my husband and i have both experienced rapid steering oscillation at highway speeds, a jarring full vehicle wobble when going over a bump or crack in the highway. the local dealer where we bought the jeep had already replaced the steering damper due to an earlier recall; the highspeed steering lockup and oscillation issues have occurred since. i'm now working with a second local dealer who hasn't yet been able to isolate or diagnose the steering problems. as next step, the technician is suggesting i take the jeep back out on the highway with him to try to recreate the steering binding/lockup issues ' yikes!

When traveling at highway speeds, a small bump in the road causes the steering wheel and front suspension to shake violently. the jeep dealership has replaced the steering dampner twice but there is no guarantee it will fix the issue

My jeep started to shake violently after driving over some small bumps on the highway while driving 60-65 mph. i had to pull my car over. i thought i blew a tire, but i did not. i drove off without the vehicle shaking after i waited a few minutes. unfortunately, it happened again in the same day when i drove over a rough patch on the highway traveling the same speed. i pulled over again and waited before driving off. i did some research and learned this is a know safety problem with jeeps called a "death wobble". i made an appointment to have my jeep looked at on 2-4-2020, however the service garage had to cancel my appointment due to their internet being down. i have rescheduled for 2-7-2020. if the service does not correct the problem, what am i to do? thank you, [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

My daughter drives that jeep and had the steering lock up on the highway in houston on the morning of january 29 2020 and could not steer left(change lane) for about a mile, then went back to normal...it was taken the next day to helfman dealer, with said problem was solved...they updated electronics witch i believe the problem is a mechanical issue in the steering box.there was no accident involved.i found online several similar issues and videos related to the same problem.i believe its just a matter of time before it happens again hopefully without an accident involved. i think it is a critical issue having a steering lock up

Driving around a bend and the steering locked up on me leaving me unable to steer for a few seconds.

Driving at about 60 mph when i went over bridge separators and the whole front end started to wobble and shake until i slowed to approx. 40 mph thought the front wheels were going to come off.

I am becoming increasingly concerned with the steering issue in my 2018 jl rubicon. the recall on the steering dampener was performed 06/06/19. the vehicle is lightly driven but lately has seen more mileage. unfortunately the replacement dampener did not correct the wandering and drifting issue. the vehicle will not track straight and must be steered all the time to remain in a lane consistently. at highway speeds the steering issue is very pronounced. it becomes difficult to keep the vehicle tracking straight with the wandering issue and slop in the wheel. i have another appointment on 01/24/20 to reexamine the steering problem.

Jeep started a "death wobble" on interstate after hitting pot hole. steering wheel started rapidly shaking and wouldn't stop until i got slowed to below 40 mph.

Since new my jeep pulls to the right.. took it to dealer for alignment .. they said they couldn't do nothing about it to take it to a aftermarket shop.. modesto dealer .. service rep jonathan... why would i take to a aftermarket shop?? hard to believe they cant align of fix a stock vehicle they sold .. hard to keep on the road please help.. shakes bad after 70 .. hard to believe i have a new vehicle yet need to drive on the slow lane..

After the steering damper recall my jeep started experiencing the "death wobble" after hitting bumps at about 65mph. it happed 3 times. jeep is giving me the runaround.

I have 2018 jeep jlu rubicon from day one that i pickup my jeep the steering wanders allover the road have to constantly correct to keep from running off the road when it is cold below 20 deg the steering to the right is ok unless it gets colder but when you turn to the left it binds up, making hard to turn then all of sudden it lets lose if the weather is above 20 deg the binding go's away after vehicle warms up but under 0 deg its hard to turn until the weather warns up. i have talked with the dealership several time they state that nothing is wrong in the areas of the dealership the weather never get cold

I'm driving on the highway about 70 and i hit a bump and my car starts shaking violently! i have cars next to me and behind me , and i move over to the slower lane and slow down to about 40 for the shaking to stop .

My vehicle failed to brake and steering wheel was not responding either causing me to crash into a vehicle parked in front of me there is video surveillance that will show how long i was trying to control this vehicle and was not able too i took it to a jeep dealer and they state that nothing was wrong there are multiple forums https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/my-2018-jl-sports-brakes-and-steering-failed-today-again-causing-a-crash.42801/page-2 this happen at a mall around the holiday season i could of killed someone im trying to save a life something went wrong and is happening to others yet jeep fails to check further into it on saturday my jeep had still not been checked now at 10am i received a called telling me that nothing was wrong with the car so fast the dealer opens at 9am it took you less than an hour to tell me nothing is wrong with the car? please i need this documented all i'm trying to do is avoid soothing like this happening again and someone losing their lives because of it. all i was doing was trying to park at a mall. can someone get back to me so i can explain in detail what happen. please! attached is a picture of one of the vehicle that were hit by my 2018 jeep wrangler jl.*dt*jb

My local jeep dealer performed a recall service for faulty steering even though i had not experienced any problem that has been reported by others. now, after the service was performed, i am experiencing the wobbly steering problem at both high speeds (65-70mph) as well as at lower speeds (30-35mph) when i go over road bumps or potholes. this has happened 4 times already in the last 2 days since i got my vehicle serviced! how ironic that the problem started after the recall service was performed!!! back to the dealership again...

I was driving on highway about 65mph, the highway was curving to left on ramp but i could not turn my steeringwheel because it was too stiff. i did not do any suspension upgrades for this car. it was more than stiff. it was definently not normal i almost could not turn. thought i was going to crash into wall. i felt like if this happens again it might cause a life threatning accident.

I was driving on the highway at 64/65 miles an hour, no weather at all, i hit a bridge strapping bump, and the jeep was almost out of control! death wobble definitely occured just a vehicle was passing me! i gripped the wheel as it shook almost uncontrollably! i slowed down to about 30 and it stopped. the jeep was vibrating out of contol!! this has happened 4 times already! it is terrifying!! fix the death wobble nobody wants to die!!!

I was driving in the back roads at 30 mph and encountered a curve on the road. i turned my steering wheel lightly to the right and my jeep would not go in the direction i needed it to. the steering locked up. i had it lock up many times this morning when i turned left or right. the temperature this morning was 35 degrees f. this is a cause for concern as our lives and those of others is at risk. a serious safety concern. this is the second issue i've had with this jeep. i had the steering dampner changed because it was violently vibrating at high speeds on the highway. this jl model is junk.

When driving at around 60 mph or faster, hitting a bump in the road causes the vehicle to shake somewhat violently for 10-30 seconds or so. this happens multiple times per week and started about 2 months ago.

Twice now the steering wheel has locked up on my jeep and made it hard to steer. both times jeep was driving and than turning and whilst turning steering locked up and it became difficult to turn.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while driving various speeds, without warning the steering wheel became loose and failed operate as intended. the contact stated that it was difficult to safely control or maneuver the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to allen mello chrysler dodge jeep ram located at 13 marmon dr, nashua, nh 03060 , (833)207-1926 and also to bonneville and son chrysler dodge jeep ram located at 625 hooksett rd, manchester, nh 03104, (603)624-9280, to be diagnosed. neither dealer was able to duplicate the failure or retrieve a fault code. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 9,000.

This happened twice on the same day. vehicle was in motion at approximately 60 miles per hour entering highway when a bump was hit front end started to shake and shimmy all the way through the steering wheel. almost had to completely stop the vehicle to get the shaking to stop. this is called the jeep death wobble. i had received a recall from fiat chrysler of america several months earlier to have my vehicle steering stabilizer replace. after a lot of research on this particular problem i think the vehicle manufacturer should be held liable for all front end damage done for the life of the vehicle in relation to this problem in engineering. i have seen many places where they say this problem will ruin your ball joints and your other linkages in your front end. they should inform the consumer of this problem at time of purchase.

At highway speeds the steering wheel of my jeep locks up and is very difficult to turn. this happens no matter if i am getting off an exit of just changing lanes on the highway. it is extremely dangerous. seems to be connected to the highway speeds and lower temperatures.

Excessive shaking in steering wheel upon hitting slight road bumps (crack/pebble) not significant bumps occurring at speeds as low as 30mph occurs more frequently at highway speeds issue is more common if steering wheel is turned slightly to left shaking is excessive and vehicle control is lost at higher speeds. only way to resolve is to slow abruptly to less than 40 mph. vehicle has already undergone fcj recall fix of enhanced steering damper/stabilizer but issue is not resolved vehicle safety concern for this vehicle and any other vehicle near it when issue occurs issue has happened several times with as few as 3500 miles on the vehicle

Since i bought my jeep i've taken it back twice for the death wobble. less than a year ago was the first time and they replaced the steering damper. it was fine for a few months and started again. having to work i wasn't able to take it back in. the wobble got so bad i was scared when it would start. it had such a violent shake when i would hit a bump on the freeway i would have to reduce speed on the freeway fast which causes it's own set of issues. i just took it in again and they did the recall on the steering damper again. i told them you did it less than a year ago. i got the jeep back this week and my first drive on the freeway i can already feel that it is still going to be a issue. what will happen when it's snowing and icy on the freeway and the death wobble happens? fca may really have a death on their hands then. you don't get much for 50,000 anymore. this should be stopped before these jeeps kill people.

I was driving on the interstate with the cruise control set at 73. i hit a bump and the steering started shaking rapidly. i was unable to control the vehicle while this was happening. i slowed to a stop and when i started again i was fine. i noted that when i was traveling between the speeds of 70-75 and hit a bump is when the wobble would ensue. i have had the steering damper replaced already due to this same issue. the steering damper had no effect on the problem.

Rounding a turn and going about 30 mph, the power steering stopped working. for about 2 seconds i had to struggle with the vehicle to prevent from crashing into the center divider.

Violent shaking at highway speeds. first time it happened was maybe a month after i picked up the vehicle but since i barely drive highway it didn't happen again until recently on a trip to pa. had to stop the vehicle for the shake to stop. vehicle is somewhat controllable but extremely unsafe depending on condition of highway and if at night. since the november issue it has happened a few times since and will be in service on 12/23 for a recall i was never made of aware of.

Steering feels loose and has play. unsafe

When traveling at high speeds (70+) on the freeway, if you hit a bump or hole my steering wheel will violently shake for about 10 seconds. i have had my car for about 13 months and have only noticed it over the last few months (when it has been colder temperatures, as i live in michigan).

Steering wanders. two or three inches of play in steering. car has been in for service three times. dealer changed steering stabilizer three times. car goes back in 11/18/19 for the 4th time same problem. steering is dangerous. car is uncontrollable.

Driving on highway @ approximately 65 mph, car lost most steering control and violently swayed from side to side (felt as if a tire had blown or come off); in inside lane of 3 lane road; extremely hard to control vehicle. put on flashers; other driver's able to see control issue and allowed me to shakily get across other two lanes to side of road.

Steering wheel binds up (it won't turn left) in in cold temperatures. it happened on two separate occasions while driving (in both of these cases speeds were below 45mph). notified the car dealership and they said they could not do anything without a technical service bulletin (tsb), so i submitted a case number with fiat chrysler automotive (fca). within 12 hours of submitting the case, i was informed they could not duplicate, were not going to do anything further and where closing the case. i believe this is a significant vehicle safety issue that requires a more thorough investigation as binding steering could have severe consequences that can result in death. i am not satisfied the dealership or fca adequately addressed this issue. lastly, several online jeep forums have indicated and demonstrated very similar problems on this model and year of the vehicle.

My wife experienced started experiencing the harmonic frequency anomaly aka "death wobble" just as the weather started to get cooler in nj. i brought vehicle in to perform the tsb on 11/15. the very next day 11/16 the death wobble came back only this time much worse! she was heading to a 4h leadership training course with a car full of children, thankfully she was able to maintain control and pull off the side of the highway which in itself it not safe to do. the fix that fca has published does not work - nhtsa do your job investigate and mandate fca fix the issue not put a band aid on a broken leg.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. the contact received an unknown recall notice regarding the "death wobble". mountain valley motors, inc. (7535 appalachian hwy, blue ridge, ga 30513) performed the recall repair. while the contact was taking a long road trip, the vehicle experienced the "death wobble". the vehicle was taken to miller's chrysler dodge jeep ram (48 keely island road, martinsburg, wv 25401, (888) 362-8027) to have the recall repair performed again. the dealer claimed that the original recall repair was performed incorrectly and the part was installed upside down. the vehicle was repaired and able to be driven home; however, the contact stated the front end of the vehicle continued to shake. the mountain valley dealer stated that the manufacturer issued new instructions on how to install the part, which could have caused confusion. the dealer did not know when the instructions were issued. the failure mileage was 13,000. the vin was unknown.

While in motion during colder temperatures, my steering wheel becomes stiff and difficult to turn. the stiffness is present at all speeds, but most prevalent at highway speeds. this stiffness eventually fades once temperatures increase or the vehicle has warmed up sufficiently. there was a service bulletin jeep released to fix this issue, and i had it applied last winter, but the issue has returned again. it seems the software fix they had applied is not permanent. this issue is incredibly dangerous as it causes the steering wheel to almost lock up when taking a turn. at times when temperatures are very low, the steering wheel stiffness makes turning on the highway very difficult.

I've had issues turning steering wheel during cold mornings (~30 degree) while driving at highway speed. i can only turn steering wheels about 5 degrees and then meet some resistance which it doesn't allow me to continue through my turn. this happens for turning both right and left directions. it is very scary at highway speed heading into an exit ramp or in the middle of a curve. i only have this issue when the temperature is low. it had happened several times this week in cold mornings.

While driving above 60mph if i run over a pot hole or a bridge expansion joint i lose my steering .if i don't slow down to 30mph quickly i will not have control. the part that concerns me is that i already was serviced for the steering recall .

I was driving my jeep on the highway at 65mph and drove over a seam(bump) in the road. the front wheels and steering wheel began the shake violently and uncontrollably. i had to bring the vehicle to a complete stop in order for the shaking to stop. finding a place to come to a complete stop on the highway is not safe at all.

When vehicle is above 60 mph and the temp is 35 or below there is no steering assist. its as if the vehicle has no power steering, took to dealership and they claimed nothing was wrong with the jeep.

While driving over 50 mph the steering wheel locks if i want to turn it to the left. difficult to change lanes and turn on upcoming curves which can lead to a bad accident. upon slowing down the steering wheel unlocks and now goes back to normal. also while driving and hitting a small bump or a change in the pavement causes steering wheel to uncontrollably shake until i slow down.

Traveling on an interstate at 65 mph and went across the metal strip just before a bridge. the front wheels started wobbling violently and the steering wheel shook bad as well. this happened two more times this trip at the same type of situation. the second time i tried to slow down to get the jeep to stop wobbling but an 18 wheeler was directly behind me and almost ran up the rear of my vehicle. i had three mishaps all the same on this trip. i use the jeep around town, but won't drive it at high speeds. i had the damper replaced in the jeep three days prior to this trip. this is the part that fca says causes the problem. i have another appointment next week to have the jeep checked out. the date this happened to me was nov. 8th, 2019. being a first time owner of a jeep, i think i should have been made aware of this problem when i bought the jeep from the dealer.

When i hit a small bump going over 50mph. shakes violently. jeep has tried to repair twice. still does it. very unsafe, especially for winter driving.

I was driving my jeep yesterday morning going 60mph. the temperature was in the 30's. i was heading into a left hand turn when my steering wheel would not turn. i tapped on the brakes to slow down as i was afraid i was going to run off the road with my two young children in the jeep. when i slowed to around 40 my jeep steering came back. it was a very scary situation.

Exessive play in the steering. have had the stabilizer replaced, had the track bar replaced, had the steering box replaced, tires rotated and balanced, still walking all over the road and 3 inches of play both way in the steering wheel. not safe, do not feel safe with my kids in the car.

Severe shaking in front end . also porosity in frame welds
