Problems with 2008 Jeep Wrangler FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2008 Jeep Wrangler starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 68 408 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2008 Jeep Wrangler

When refueling at any gas station when the tank reaches a certain point the gasoline comes back out spraying over the side of vehicle and on me leaving gasoline on the ground and myself covered in gas

Fuel splash back on refueling.

When filling the fuel tank, fuel spills out of filler hole after auto-stop filler nozzle shuts off.!!

Gas tank cover is rusted so bad the tank could fall out. very unsafe for the road.

When filling the gas tank the gas overflows and spills on the car.

After fueling the 2008 jeep wrangler unlimited x the fuel backflows alot. this seems dangerous, as in what if a fire sparks up at the gas station pump.

Gas and air spit/spill back out of fuel filler neck tube when refueling at gas station pump. gas runs down fender/fender flare. problem began around 55-60,000 miles. jeep continues to give off strong gas vapor odor when parked in garage even weeks after refueling.

When filling the fuel tank at the gas station if gas pump is on high fuel backsplashes on the vehicle and onto the ground. this is a common problem amongst many jeep wrangler owners. dealership denies any problem. you ask below when did this happen well i will list one date but it happens 50% of the time when filling the jeep up. i bought the jeep in 2011 with 40,000 miles on it and has been doing it ever since.

Fuel does not stop filling when tank is full. about a cup or two of fuel overflows before pump stops. this happens at all pumps and has been ongoing for a few weeks. most recent date is noted.

Fueling up the jeep with the auto shut off at filling stations now causes about 2 cups of gasoline puking out the filler and onto myself , vehicle , and ground. this now happens every fill up.

When filling the fuel tank, fuel spills out of filler hole after auto-stop filler nozzle shuts off.

Gas overflows from gas filler tube after pump has stoped

Every time you fuel the vehicle to gas overflows out of the fuel inlet onto the side and rear fender of the vehicle.

When refueling the gas tank it overflows gas all over on the ground. it does not automatically shut off when tank is full.

Car at random will not start, lights will not work or radio will stop working ... check engine light stays on without any engine issues ... to pump fuel it takes 20 minutes to fill it up you can't walk away or it will over flow ... jeep left me sit the other day and no garage can tell me whats wrong with it... its not the starter ...

Driver's side front seat belt latch occasionally does not latch also occasionally will not release without having to open roof pull seat belt slack all the way out and stand up in seat to get out of vehicle. then have to hit and work with latch approximately 2-3 before it will release. if in an accident not sure if seatbelt latch will hold forces or not let you out of a possible burning car. also fuel backflows from fill inlet at every fillip if i do not stop it before full.

Gas overflows and spills out during every fueling. i think it is an inlet check valve issue. gas tank also leaks gas around the fuel pump seal. smells like gas outside the vehicle

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. while the vehicle was being fueled, fuel exited the filler tube and spilled onto the contact and vehicle. the contact called a local dealer (stafford chrysler, jeep, dodge of springfield, 7611 loisdale rd, springfield, va 22150) and was informed that the failure may be due to the fuel tank and/or filler tube. the repair would cost $900. the contact declined to pay and believed it should be covered under a recall. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified and did not assist. the failure mileage was 51,000.

Air bag light is on from a defective clock spring and the vehicle still spits out gas when i fill up.

Went to go fill up the jeep, it filled up the pump clicked that it was done and then it violently overflowed covering me and my precious jeep in gasoline.

When fueling the gas pump isn't triggered to shut off until gas has already came out the top of the fueling neck. this causes gas to spill down the side of the vehicle and have a gas spill at the fueling station. this happens at every station i fill up at.

Gas tanks overflows when filling tank.

When pumping fuel while vehicle is stationary the fuel overflows. must pump in small amounts slowly to keep overflow to a minimum; however, overflow still occurs especially at the end of pumping when the tank is full. overflow squirts out and sounds like gargling when filling with fuel.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. after refueling the vehicle, fuel spewed out of the filler neck. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 65,000. the vin was unavailable.

Every time i fill the gas tank up gas spills, shoots out everywhere at least a few gallons of gas is not just wasted but all over me, the jeep and the ground. *tr

Fuel spills out of gas tank at every filling. strong gas odor from gas tank at all times.

Jeep is spitting back fuel during fill up. chrysler is telling me that my jeep is not covered under the extended warranty that other 2008 jeep wranglers have now been given. i have videos of this spitback happening. (inlet check valve defect) one dealer said it was covered but chrysler says no. have been trying to get chrysler to repair it for 2 years now.

Filing up the tank causes gas to spew everywhere. *tr

I just recently bought this vehicle used. when i refuel the vehicle, the pump stops, but then fuel shoots out of the tank. *tr

The gas tank spits back fuel after every filling. *tr

Every time i fuel the jeep, it overflows after its full and spills everywhere. the first time this happened, the fuel spilled all over my pants and shoes and hand. this is a safety hazard and needs to be fixed. the overfilling problem has been occurring everytime i fill up. *tr

During refueling, fuel back filled from the filler tube. this caused gas to spray out and splash onto me, the vehicle and ground. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that when refueling the vehicle, the fuel tank failed to stop when at the full level. as a result, fuel spilled from the vehicle. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was unknown.

Gas pours out of filler/neck , gas tank when filling the vehicle up. have tried holding nozzle at different angles, filling it slower etc however this continues to happen. *tr

When filling the fuel tank, the fuel stop valve is stuck open causing fuel to spill out when tank gets full. if i remember correctly this valve is there to stop fuel from spilling out in a roll-over accident. if the valve gets stuck open then this can cause a fire/explosion. *tr

When filling with gas it spits back gas when gas pump turns off. *tr

Drove over snow & snow knocked gasoline vapor canister off causing fuel spillage that continued until replaced. only held on by plastic & easily knocked off. called dealership & scheduled appointment. was very careful & only drove home & then to dealership being very careful. adjacent gasoline tank skid plate was not even marked. unfortunately, skid plate does not cover canister. new vehicles include a skid plate for the canister. no doubt would have been a fire if exhaust had been hot! *tr

I started my 2008 jeep wrangler jk and immediately got a check engine light with an audible sound. the engine was running very rough and shaking. i turned off the engine and it seemed fine but the check engine light was still on. i have a obd2 diagnostic code reader and it showed the code p0306. this is a misfire on the number six cylinder. i took it to larry h. miller chrysler jeep dodge ram dealership in albuquerque and this is what was done. "wi tech diagnostics for fault codes, had store codes for injector #6 circuit, no work done, operating as per design". i asked what can be done to fix the problem and [xxx] said that the tech could not duplicate the problem so they could not fix anything. [xxx] offered to perform a fuel injector cleaning but this was the only options for now. the next day i started the jeep and had the same issue. i looked up this code 0306 on the jeep jk site and read posts of "pentastar problem". in all cases these people had to visit the dealership 4 to 5 times until they fixed the problem. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Large amounts of gasoline sprays out when refueling the vehicle. the gasoline comes out with such force that it is impossible to avoid getting gasoline on hand, arm and clothing. it occurs when the tank becomes full. at first i thought it was a problem with the gas stations pump. it was intermittent at first but now occurs every time i put gas in the vehicle regardless of which gas station pump i use. this is more than an inconvenience and should be considered a safety issue! *tr

On every fill up for gas since january after i or an attendant who fills the gas tank gets splashed/soaked with gas. upon removing the nozzle the gas 'burps' back and sprays gasoline out of the tank. the gas splash started out very small and not as frequently but now it rushes out like a waterfall and every fill up. regardless if you pump the gas slowly by hand or use the auto lever on the pump it still happens-everytime. i am only using 87 octane gas as per the instruction manual and this happens at every gas station (mobil, shell, sunoco, texaco, global, irving, citgo, etc.) my local gas stations are sick of me coming in because they always have to put out kitty litter to mop up the mess. *tr

Fuel tank overflows a few ounces at every fillup. happens regardless of gas station or pump. *tr

Very often, when i fill up my gas tank, it spits gas out. sometimes, the gas sprays out so far that it wets my clothing, the fuel pump stand, and the surrounding area. i am concerned that this can one day cause a fire and is a health and environmental hazard. i have tried to pump at different pumps and at different speeds but the problem persists. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while refueling, the nozzle would repeatedly turn off and once it did fuel would spew back out from the filler neck. the contact mentioned that the engine and fuel cap warning lamp illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 81,000.

Have jk 2r rubicon model. when traveling in the high country in colorado i start to smell fuel fumes around noon and they do not go away until we refuel at the end of the day. the fuel tank get so hot the ethanol boils off and the emission system cannot handle the fumes so they vent into the atmosphere. the jeep fills with fumes and vehicles behind can smell them too. all of the two door jk models we travel with have the same problem. jeep has been of no help and say they know of the problem but have no solution. in the last year 2 of us have contacted large cell lymphoma. ethanol is a class one carcinogin. *tr

Gas cap sensor light on. when filling the tank with gas, the automatic shut off at the pump clicks off, then within 5/10 seconds the gas starts to surge out of the tank all down the jeep, over the ground, over me. the gas tank and assembly was replaced 3 times in 2011 while still under warranty because the problem kept coming back. the same problem started again 2013. we called the dealer and found that it is covered under an unlimited miles unlimited months extended warranty. glad we called because we didn't get any notice of this extended coverage in the mail. a separate issue began in 2012 with some leakage of gas under the vehicle and an odor of gas outside the car if the tank was filled up all the way. since the warranty had expired, our personal mechanic handled it. he replaced a hose that was attached to the fuel tank (the same gas cap sensor light was on for this problem too). he also tightened the fuel pump at the tank where the gas was leaking from and he found a crack in the tank which he patched. this fixed the odor and leaking of gas from under the jeep. if this problem happens again in the future, now knowing about the extended warranty with the other problem, we will contact the dealer about it to see if it is covered too as it is gas tank related. note - it was right after our mechanic fixed the odor and under car leak that the other problem of the gas surging out of the pump started again. *tr

Since 2010 i have been having issues with gas over flow when filling the tank. at first i thought it was the gas attendant and being careless. this seems to be an issue mostly in the cooler weather and winter months. it is been becoming progressively worse in the last few months where after researching and speaking with other jeep owners have found that this has been a hazard and recall in a lot of wranglers. i have also learned that my jeep is not been included in this recall and have to pay for this costly repair myself. i find this unfair of chrysler to do this to faithful jeep owners. i also found that i am not alone in these costly repairs as i might also have to replace the whole gas tank. i do not wish to turn this into a battle. please help me out with this ongoing problem as i am a faithful jeep lover and want to stay that way. thank you *tr

Purchased this jeep in 2010. every since i purchased it, the gas spills out from the tank when i fill it up, unless i squeeze the gas nozzle very slowly and carefully. when the gas spills out, it goes on my clothing, the jeep, and onto the ground. this is a health problem, a safety issue, and an environmental issue. jeep should fix this for free!!!

Fueling has been an ongoing problem. i had a shut off problem in that the gas would eject from the car. then i had a problem with slow fueling. it might take a gallon then almost stop taking forever to put fuel into the vehicle. i have taken it to begnal motors in kingston and they did address the issue and replaced the intake nozzle? and something to allow air into the tank when refueling. it seemed to be ok for awhile then went back to the fueling problem. i took it back to begnal and they seemed to believe the only solution was to replace the gas tank at my expense! this is a liability to my safety. i drove the jeep to california and back the end of june of this year and never had a problem...i have to use my vehicle for many trips out of town and it is frightening as they told me this problem would probably get worse! this is definitely an engineering problem and should be taken care of by chrysler. it seems that there is an on going issue with the fuel system.

Persistent fuel overflow issue since 4/25/09. every time i fuel the vehicle, fuel comes out of the filler tube and spills on the vehicle and pavement.
