We have classified the 146 complaints from 2008 Jeep Wrangler about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
While driving approx. 55 mph down paved road jeep suddenly began constant horn honk, wipers started going, every dash light came on(abs, engine, airbag, etc). this continued for about 1 minute then stopped. we turned around to go back home and about 2 minutes later same thing began again. the second time, along with above symptoms, we began to lose power and were unable to accelerate to maintain speed. we pulled off to the side of the road and turned key off. horn, and wipers kept going. then the windshield wiper sprayers started spraying continuously. we were unable to start jeep at this time. this went on for about 3 minutes and finally stopped. jeep then started and we were able to drive home.
In reference to tipm recall. while driving, the horn will blow nonstop, as well as windshield wipers engage, fluid sprays nonstop onto windshield, a/c will not blow, engine has shut off spontaneously which caused a truck to lightly bump me in an intersection. selling dealership (hebert's town and country shreveport, la) will not fix. http://youtu.be/ryjxvng4c8i. *tr
Since early july, my 2008 jeep wrangler 2dr lhd has lost horn functionality, cruise control functionality, and has been illuminating the airbag warning light. i have researched this issue and i believe there should be a safety recall on the 2008 wrangler to replace faulty clocksprings just as there was for the 2007 wrangler. *tr
The airbag light just came on & my cruise control stopped working so did my horn. *tr
Warning light goes on...........horn does not work.......cruise control won't work properly........a well known problem that chrysler refuses to fix or recall. *tr
While driving at 25 mph the airbag light illuminated with a corresponding chime. the light comes on an off and the chime sounds randomly. through research i have found this is not uncommon and is a recurring problem with jeep wranglers and specifically to the clockspring behind the steering wheel. apparently my airbag may or may not work in the event of an accident. *tr
Bad clockspring on 2008 jeep wrangler 2 door lhd- air bag light on dash dings and comes on / goes off intermittently. no horn. major safety issue that, from research and talking with other jeep owners is very common but there is no recall for this yet.
On the 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) dashboard, the airbag warning light flashes on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there is something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags.this has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. this faulty clockspring is the culprit for potential airbag failure in the 2008 jeep wrangler (lhd) during an accident or premature deployment when simply driving around. daimler chrysler has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying. i have paid out of pocket to have a local dealership diagnose the issue, and they confirmed it was indeed the clockspring. *tr
2008 jeep wrangler has the airbag light on. research states that it is due to a faulty clockspring. chrysler will not address the issue on lhd wrangler. the problem is apparently consistant with many other lhd owners. *tr
While i was driving down the highway, i was approaching a corner and as i went to turn the steering wheel to negotiate the corner my wheel became stuck and i nearly went into the ditch. i jerked the steering wheel hard and heard some wires snap. after bringing the vehicle to a stop i could see pc ribbon wire hang out of the steering wheel indicating broken clock spring. *tr
The airbag light turns on and off, indicating that there is an intermittent malfunction with the airbag system. the problem is a simple part - the clock spring in the steering that connects the airbag to the control module. if the system malfunctions before or during a crash, the airbag will not deploy, and could cause serious injury or death. i am shocked that this safety issue is not being recognized or covered by jeep! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. while driving approximately 30 mph, the windshield wipers, fluid, horn operated work randomly. the engine fan operated and all four doors locked continuously. the failure recurred numerous times intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the total integrated power module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 83,200. updated 12/03/15*lj the consumer stated the heater/fan works randomly. *tr
Everything is normal and working, you try to start the car and there is a click then nothing. i then move the shifter to neutral and start the car then move shifter back to park. there are no codes being registered if you plug in a diagnostic machine and i've had several competent mechanics check it out to no avail. this is happening .to many other people and isn't an isolated incident, which is why i'm reporting it. it appears to be an electrical issue, a grounding issue to be specific. *tr
While driving at highway speed, the electrical systems of the jeep started going crazy. windshield wipers intermittently turned on (sunny and dry at time), washer fluid started spraying continuously, horn honed repeatedly at a low tone, door locks locked/unlocked repeatedly and ac system turned of. stopped vehicle at highway shoulder and this continued even when engine turned off. disconnected battery. waited 1 minute, reconnected battery, and everything seemed fine. drove another 5 minutes and same symptoms started again and lasted until i reached a gas station. power washer fluid completely drained. i have been told this is the tpim of the jeep wrangler causing this problem. not sure if it is linked to a start/stop condition the vehicle has- turn over key in ignition and all power is on but engine will not crank. disengage key, try again, sometimes will start, sometimes will take a third or fourth time. have brought this to the attention of the chrysler dealership i purchased the vehicle at in march 2008. they cannot determine a cause. brought to a independent mechanic. he indicated this would be a tpim malfunction and should be replaced. 2007 jeep wranglers had a recall for the tpim failure. i see there is litigation ongoing for other chrysler products with tpim issues. 2008 jeep wranglers appear to have far and away more issues than other new jk jeep wranglers... *tr
Clock spring failure in my 2008 lhd jeep wrangler has caused my windshield wipers to randomly turn on, my turn signals and headlights to only function intermittently, and my gauge cluster flickers when any of the above trigger. *tr
While driving at night, the horn, front wipers, washers, rear wipers, and reverse lights all came on without warning. pulled to side of road and turned off car but engine did not turn off. opened hood and hit top of t.i.p.m. (totally integrated power module). horn, wipers, washers, and engine stopped. this is a common problem with 2007-2009 wranglers that jeep fails to accept. it is unsafe because you cannot stop the engine or see where you are going when the washer fluid starts running. this is the 3rd time in 2 years this has done this. *tr
The horn no longer works and per the dealer, it is the clockspring. this cost about $500 to replace. the same make and model of the previous year had a recall but they have not recalled the 08 which apparently has the same problem. *tr
Dodge dealership has inspected my jeep for an airbag warning light illuminated. i have an extended warranty from millennium and the will not cover the repair. the problem has been diagnosed as a faulty clock spring. this is a lhd vehicle. the recall id 94030 is for the rhd jeep. if left hand drive jeeps are having the same problems, how can this just be on the right hand drive only? recall id # 94030 - air bags:frontal component air bags:frontal model affected wrangler potential units affected 5437 recall date: nov 02, 2011 model affected: 2008 jeep wrangler summary: chrysler is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 right hand drive (rhd) jeep wrangler vehicles manufactured from february 1, 2007, through october 10, 2011. some vehicles may be equipped with driver's airbag clockspring assemblies that could experience a compromised airbag circuit resulting in an airbag lamp illumination, which indicates that the airbag may not deploy. consequences: a broken electrical circuit in the airbag clockspring wiring assembly can lead to non-deployment of the driver frontal airbag and will not be able to properly protect the driver in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injuries. remedy: chrysler will notify owners and remedy the vehicles as necessary free of charge. chrysler will mail to owners an interim notification during march 2012. owners may contact chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. potential units affected: 5437. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while parked, the vehicle failed to start until after several attempts. the contact stated that a lighting bolt warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
While i was driving around town, my airbag light will come on and off. sometimes the light will stay on for long periods of time. *tr
I was leaving home at 6:00am to go to work and the small red light for engine problems came on. then the low tire pressure light came on, then went off and so did the red light. there is nothing i could do at that time of the morning so i limped to work, 25 miles of on/off/on/off/on gets to you. i called the dealer and they said to bring it in. i did and they couldn't find anything wrong with it and couldn't make the light come back on. over the next couple of months, the red light would come on but not the tire light. what is wrong with my jeep? if the light doesn't come on, they can't fix it??? it doesn't come on by command. and it is still coming on/off/on/off. *tr
Airbag light came on intermittently at low driving speed. eventually stayed on permanently whenever vehicle was in gear. failed clock spring was diagnosed. this vehicle is the more common left hand drive. *tr
Air bag light came on during driving. took it to the dealer where they told me the clock spring needed to be replaced for $525.00. after researching the issue i discovered that jeep has recalled the right hand drive clock springs for 2007-2012 but not on the left hand drive jeeps. they are the same part and a recall should be issued across the fleet. this is a safety issue as it can cause the air bag to deploy on its own, or not deploy in an accident. *tr
Intermittent problem starting the car. when the problem occurs, you turn the key and you just hear a dull click. the engine does not crank. after 2 or 3 tries, it will start. this has happened about a dozen time in the last 6 months. the starter relay switch has been changed but the problem persists. a new starter was put in but the problem continued. so far $350 has been spent but nothing has been resolved. *tr
The head lights will not stay on when turned on. when the head light switch is turned on the come on then off and will not come back on. the horn will blow with out pushing the horn button and at the same time the horn blows the windshield washer sprayer sprays water. after the jeep as sit for several days without being started the motor will not turn over. the battery is fully charged and all the warning lights on the dash lights up when key is turned on but the starter will not even try to turn over the motor. after attempting to start the motor several times the starter will eventually start the motor. i have researched this problem on the internet and there was a recall for the totally integrated power module "tipm" in 2007. the problems that are occurring with my jeep are the same problems that were occurring with the jeep recalls in 2007. please investigate this issue and recall this tipm as well. thank you for your time. *tr
Clock spring has failed, this has been recalled on the rhd models. horn no longer works and i am unsure if the airbag will deploy. why is it not in recall on the lhd vehicles as well? *tr
Air bag light and chime go off and on while driving for no reason. happens every few minutes while driving. it has been doing this for over six months. *tr
After 3 yr, the car would not start. battery was replaced and car would not start. after 3 days the car started and now intermittent the car would not start. dealer does not know why. *tr
Rattling noise under the body-turned out the weld on the heat shield nneded to be rewelded brake lines were being rubbed through by the tires-new brake lines had been updated to steel and route close to the body instead of rubber ones that route close to the tire "hot oil" light comes on. dealership said to add an additional transmission cooler as the factory one is insufficient. tmps low tire light and sentry key light come on and off together repeatedly. in park the lights would flash, honr honks, windshield wipers front in back would turn on and srpay fluid, clicking noise and burning smell from fuse box, fan and accessories would run without being turned on. these would occur when the vehicle was started or when a door would be opened even with no key in the ignition. dealership said tipm was going out. i found this is a very common problem. all of these issues are safety hazards and through simle research have found a common problem for jk wranglers. *tr
I was turning out of my driveway and heard a snap in the steering wheel. air bag light came on and the horn no longer worked. the next day i heard another little snap and the cruise control stopped working. when turning the steering wheel i can hear things scraping inside it. i have been informed that the clockspring is broken. *js
Airbag light stays lit constantly. horn does not work. esp\bas light on dash stays lit constantly. dealer diagnosed the issue as a faulty clockspring. *tr
My airbag light continues to light up and beeps. i researched it and it says that it is a airbag clockspring failure. i called and chrysler is not willing to help me. had i known this i would have not purchased the $40,000 vehicle. i would not recommend this vehicle to no one.
the sound in the dashboard for check engine light, all other lights door and seatbelt sounds do not work 90 percent of the time. 10 percent they will make a sound but then shut off. it is a mail jeep. i'm concerned thta something might have shorted out or will catch my vehicle on fire. when i told the dealership they told me it would cost a lot of money because they would have to take the dash out to find the problem. the reason so many miles is my postal route. this car should be reltively new for this to happened. *tr
Airbag warning light in instrument panel consistently goes off during irregular speed, steering wheel operation, and temperature. there is no pattern that correlates with the timing of the airbag warning light. when it first started, it would only come during at brief moments and turn off again. now, april, it turns off after vehicle start (like normal operation), comes back on immediately, and only briefly does it turn off at random times. the majority of the time the warning light fluctuates is during steering wheel turning. turning to one particular side does not alter the light more than the other. sometimes hard bumps in the road or off-road scenarios will change the light too. knowing very well this could be the clockspring, no other lights or functions involved with this device confirm this is the problem. the horn works at all turning angles, esp and abs all function normally. there are also no dtc codes from the computer. all visible electrical plugs in the cabin and behind dash have been unplugged, cleaned from debris and reconnected. i find the current recall for only the 2007s and right hand drive 2008s very frustrating! the assumption that only rhds will have their windows down more on dirt roads might be factual; however, there are numerous of 2008 jeep wrangler owners that use their vehicle for work, or off-road scenarios that will easily bypass the rhd assumption. this is a very scary problem to have. i do no feel safe that any accident i have the airbags will deploy properly. the faith of my vehicle saving my life is completely lost. *tr
After months of overnight stays with the dealership; a number of electrical parts were replaced in an attempt to resolve intermittent starting issues. during the last visit the tipm stopped responding while the tech was checking for error codes. the tech determined that it needed to be replaced and was the likely source of the issues given it's complex build and it's roll in the electrical system. the vehicle is an 08 wrangler unlimited with 60,000 miles. *tr
I have had several issues and as i research all seem to be related to the clock spring. 1. airbag lights stay on and ding occasionally 2. both key fobs stopped working 3. occasional electrical problem (horn sounds for no reason) 4. at times (1 out of 3) the starter clicks but car does not start (jiggling gear shift fixes the problem) i have read pages and pages of similar posts of problems with other 2008 wranglers. all complaints are the same. i had the starter replaced for $400+ and that did not fix the issue. i want this resolved now. i currently have a jeep cherokee and a town and country as well. thank you. *tr
I own a jeep tour company and this is the third clockspring i have had to replace in two different jeeps. while traveling at 5mph or under the airbag light illuminated. after having the dealer check it out i was advised it was a clockspring issue. i replaced this one on my own. they charge $1450 just to check what part, then $280 for the part. this has been done at tto seperate local dealer ships. i have saved two clocksprings, one done from a 2007 jeep and one from this 2008.
1. the horn and possibly the airbag is not working. 2. we now have to purchase $300 in parts because the airbag clock spring has malfunctioned. *tr
The airbag light continuously goes on and off, that has been going on about a year, now my horn wont work. im told it has been a common problem with jeep around my year(2008). in fact 2007 had a recall on their clock spring, which is now what i'm being told is the issue. chrysler has done nothing to assist or acknowledge the issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. while driving at various speeds, the air bag and tire pressure warning lights illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the clock spring needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
Vehicle does not start when attempting to turn on. engine clicks, but combustion does not start. after moving gear from "drive" to "neutral," then engine may turn on. other times, it may turn on after attempting for 30 mins. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while the air conditioner was activated, a burning rubber odor emitted from the vents as the ignition failed. in addition, the contact stated that the vehicle would frequently fail to immediately start. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis but the dealer was unable to locate a failure code. the dealer wiped and sprayed the vents, but the burning odor was still present and the starting failure persisted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 44,000. updated 09/15/11*lj the consumer stated she noticed a chemical, fuel like burning rubber smell. the vehicle fails to start occasionally. the smell emits even when the air conditioner is off and the vehicle is running regularly. updated 09/16/11
The first of many times happened one morning as i was getting into vehicle. the horn, windshield wipers, lights and instrument indicator lights all activated. the wipers sprayed all the fluid in the reservoir. i could not turn these off. after disconnecting the battery, the engine would not crank for some time and the horn no longer worked. the dealership diagnosed the problem as a faulty horn and replaced the clockspring, horn and a fuse. a few weeks later, while driving, the horn, wipers and lights all came on and i could not turn these off! even after removing the key, the engine and all the above would not shut off! once again, i had to disconnect the battery in order to shut these components off. this has happened numerous times since! now the airbag light comes on periodically! the dealership is now saying the problem is with the tipm. there seems to be a backorder of more than 400+ of these components. every week that goes by, the dealership says that the eta has been moved back a week and they will call me when it gets in. to the dealer's credit (after i went a little crazy in the manager's office), they have agreed to pay for the est. cost of $600. but, in the meantime, is this vehicle safe to drive? shouldn't there be a recall since there are 400+ of these parts on backorder? today, i called chrysler customer service and they told me that they would document this. not good enough! after insisting that something else be done, i was told that a service manager would be contacting me tomorrow. we will see. in the meantime.......i am somewhat fearful of driving my jeep for the simple reason of the unknown. not to mention the embarrassment that this brings when stopped at a busy intersection and my horn and wipers start blaring uncontrollably. this must be stopped and chrysler should declare a recall! *tr
I put in a new battery in my car at the dealer and it corroded again. they told me they forgot to spray it. i have had cars for 6 years and the battery never corroded.i feel there is something wrong someplace and the dealer is not being honest with me. *tr
When trying to start vehicle the jeep will not start. sometimes i have to put it in neutral to get it to start, sometimes i have to remove the key or push the shifter (automatic) into park. this has been an on going problem with my jeep, and i could not replicate it at the dealer. the dealer replaced the starter and battery which i told them was not the problem. *tr
Since 2010 if not sooner, my jeep wrangler sahara 2008 had a red light and air pressure light come on and off as a i drove. i took it to the jeep dealer i bought it from 2-3 times for this and they could not duplicate it so they would not fix it despite showing a video of it. in 2010 my steering damper went bad and i had to pay to get it fixed. i almost crashed 3-5 times due to the wheels violently going back and forth doing 50-65 on the highways. it was terrible. it is now 2013 and its happening all over again. i do not feel it is right to pay for this when it is clearly an issue jeep needs to resolve. *tr
Horn stopped working after about a year after purchase of new wrangler. bad clock springs are all over jeep forums. would like to have a horn, but do not want to spend many dollars for same part that will again fail. needs to be upgraded! no horn for 5-years. please help. *tr
Vehicle would randomly not start. it was finally resolved 62,000 miles later by the dealer replacing the transmission range sensor. this is a right hand drive vehicle used for postal service and this problem is all over postal message boards on the internet. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact attempted two or three times before the ignition would start. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on four different occasions for the similar failure. the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the battery was replaced by an independent mechanic. the failure continued to occur. the failure mileage was approximately 200. updated 01/26/11*lj the vehicle was taken to 3 different dealers a total of 4 times. updated 02/14/11
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that intermittently, the vehicle would not start without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the ignition switch was not properly connecting in order to start the vehicle. the ignition switch and ground wires were replaced. the failure did not persist however, the contact stated that the vehicle would exhibit signs of hesitation and stuttering intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times but to no avail. the vehicle was not further repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and was able to reach a settlement to repair the vehicle. the failure mileage was 35,000.
