Tl*the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that when driving approximately 50-60 mph, the vehicle suddenly began wobbling and shaking uncontrollably. she noticed the problem intermittently three times. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but it was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. the current mileage was approximately 38,000. the failure mileage was approximately 36,000.
Feeling in front end suspension of a loose component. you can feel it in the steering wheel when the vehicle engine compartment is hot. dealership claims no problem found. still having problem today and everyday. spoke to other jeep owners they think it may be in the steering shaft which runs close to the exhaust manifold .
Intermittent problem occurring almost exclusively at highway speeds. while driving at highway speeds suddenly, without warning, the vehicle shuts off. all warning lights on the dash board appear, engine completely shuts off which leads to power steering failure and loss of safe control of the vehicle. while the engine shut off is intermittent and does not last for more than a few seconds before it turns back on without use of the key or any other means of manually restarting the vehicle, it is highly unsafe and can lead to severe injury or death. we have noted this issue occurring approximately 1-2 times per month. we finally took the vehicle to the dealership to service and locate the issue with the vehicle on october 20, 2011. the dealership stated they could not find any issues with the vehicle, with the exception of unusually high oil consumption. the dealership advised we do an oil consumption test which will be completed in 3000 miles or 3 months. *tr
Bought 2007 jeep wrangler unlimited x in april 2010. 2 months later while filling it up at the gas station the gas came pouring back out. i thought pump was broken actually informed clerk. happened again 3 fill-ups later. around that time started having a shimmy in front end. brought it back to dealer on several occasions. was told they never heard of gas coming back out i must be doing something wrong and the shimmy was "normal" for jeeps. been having major issues with this truck it has been in the shop more than any vehicle i have ever owned. i've only bought used. i've had to have the 02 sensors changed 4 times. i have my tires balanced several times. my tires rotated. alignments, etc. i have also replaced the steering damper. fast forward to 2013. shimmy is so bad i almost took out another driver. thankfully i'm a commercially trained driver otherwise it could have ended badly. still have gas pouring out every fill up. 02 sensors still keep crapping out. head gaskets had to be replaced already. i finally had enough and told dealer they need to fix no more games and i find out about the tsb for the steering damper. then i also have to be told that my main rear oil seal is now leaking and my tranny coolant lines are leaking??? oh and was told that all this was normal for jeeps as well???? really!!!!! the truck only has 66k miles on it. it's all original no lift kits, no off roading, nothing.... this is bull... for the amount of money i paid for this vehicle somebody should be doing something. i find his site and lo and behold... i'm not the only one... unbelievable!!!! *tr
I purchased this vehicle used with 7907 miles on it. within four months i experienced the front end shake violently when i hit a bump. i thought it was just a one time occurrence caused by being in a curve when it happened. but this has happened six or seven times in the past year with two occurrences in the same day, yesterday 11-1-11. i have found a location on interstate highway i-294 where at 55mph it will occur when ever i am in the right lane. i have not taken the car to a dealer yet because it only has 27000 miles on it and everything looks tight in the front end. the vehicle is completely stock and has never been driver off road. after researching the internet for similar complaints i found many people experiencing the same trouble. it is described as "death wobble". i believe this issue should be looked at by the ntsb. with so many jeep wrangler owners having the same trouble, there may be design fault. *tr
Tl* the contact stated owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that whenever the vehicle was driven over 55 mph and over a road bump, the front of the vehicle and the steering wheel would shake abnormally. the contact would have to decelerate to 45 mph or less in order to stop the failure. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was told that a remedy was not available for the failure. the failure mileage was 35,000 and the current mileage was 81,000. ....updated 06/18/12 *bf the consumer stated he experienced a well known failure known as the "death wobble". the entire front end of the vehicle would shake uncontrollably. the shaking was so extreme, the consumer would lose the ability to fully control the vehicle and would be force to slow down in the middle of the highway. updated 06/21/12
Driving on the interstate at approximately 65 mph, and the front end began shaking violently. i started pulling over and when i got down to 35 mph, the shaking stopped. i was able to drive for a couple of weeks without incidence, and then it happened again with increasing frequency. this was a stock jeep bought new without any after-market alterations with only 52k miles. i took it into midas, and they said i needed a new steering stabilizer. they replaced it, and it did not solve the problem. i took it to another mechanic, and they replaced trackbar, but it didn't solve the problem. i took it back to midas, and they put another new stabilizer, still had the problem with ever-increasing frequency. i put new tires on the car, and the problem went away for about 20k miles. at 73k, the problem started again. this time i took it the jeep dealer. they knew what the "death wobble" was, and they said they would check everything. they reported back that there was nothing wrong with the components, and suggested i get the tires balanced again. i got the tires balanced and took it back a week later to the dealer as the problem was happening with more frequency, and now was occurring at speeds between 45-55 mph. i suggested a particular patch of highway for a test drive. they called me back and said, "there is something seriously wrong." they then worked with chrysler to identify and "solve" the problem. they replaced the tire rods and joints. three days later i experienced the problem again, and then again, and again. i have spent approximately $1400 to "fix" this problem, and it continues to persist. do an online search of "death wobble" and you'll find entry after entry and even videos. i'm really worried that one of these times when i and forced to quickly slow down and head to the shoulder, i'm going to end up rear ended by a tractor trailer.
My jeep has the death wobble, has now for years. as advised ihave replaced tires and had an allignment, fixed it for a while, now its back, replaced tires and allignment also balanced and now replacing the steering damper. there are complaints about this all over the internet. every mechanic i called had heard of it or experienced it. there have been news pieces done about it and now chrysler has issued a technical bulletin blaming it on everyone else but their poor design. they should e held accountable. i have not lifted my jeep and nothing besides tires and now this steering damper has been replaced - so all stock. they need to be forced to get to the root of this and reimburse people for the repairs and labor time it takes to try to figure out how to fix this. it may not in and of itself be a safety issue but the only way to stop it once it starts is to stop completely and that is extremely dangerous at 65 miles an hour on the highway. besides the fact that it has to cause damage to the other parts of the car because of the violent shaking and that could be dangerous in and of itself depending on what is damaged. it is ridiculous that chrysler has not been held accountable for this yet by someone with the authority to force them to fix it. *tr

Was traveling at 55 miles per hour and hit a bump in the road. the front end started shaking like i had blown a tire. i pulled over, waited a few minutes and drove away. a few weeks later, the same thing happened. took it to the dealership, was advised steering stabilizer was defective, took the vehicle to the dealer several times, after that only to drive away in an unsafe vehicle. the problem was not corrected by the dealership. got tired of fighting with jeep to fix the problem so i had to get the parts and fix it myself, but i still have the old parts. in addition, damage to the tires due to the steering stabilizer. also do to the faulty part it caused damage to the tires and they still need replaced. failure mileages was 46,695. *tr

This is the first of three similar incidents concerning two different jeeps and clockspring failure. in this incident they advised that it was caused from a big jarring. in the second incident they said dust. the third one, in a separate 2008 wranger i replaced myself. they charge approximately $150 for less then a minute of diagnostic and approximately $250 for a part that costs less then $180. i believe this is a fleecing of the public and needs the attention of your agency. there is a way to disable the the airbag sound and because of these costs it could/will lead to a death from failure.
My jeep wrangler 2007 shakes so violently that i can no longer drive it. i am afraid that i may kill someone or my self or my kid. it is the scariest thing ever. at three (3) different occasions i almost crash. i heard so many jeep owners have the same problem, so why chrysler are not doing something about this serious problem? they tried to tell me its front end or a tire issue. i have changed my steering damper, my stabilizer bar and bushings. had it aligned and bought new tires and balance. problem still exist. the vehicle has been towed back to the dealer as of this morning. and they are trying to stick me with a bill for any repairs done to rectify this wobbling issue. i do not think that i, the consumer should have to pay anything for this manufacture defect. $40, 000.00 is not cheap, they made a killing from me and now that i have six months left, nobody wants to assist or do the right thing. i love my wrangler. always dream about owning one since high school. i hoping you can do something about this issue. i have no extra money lying around. please help [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
At between 35-40 mph, when a bump is hit with one wheel before the other a shaking begins in the front suspension. at times this shaking is so violent and sustained that the vehicle has be brought to a complete stop. there is some kind of apparent harmonic oscillation that is being established for it to be as violent and sustained as it is. i initially reported this to the jeep dealership in 2008, after the steering stabilizer bracket broke off the front axle of the jeep. i was told that my problems were because the lift kit that was installed on the vehicle was not a mopar approved kit. jeeps resolution was for me to purchase a new front axle at my cost and replace the lift kit that was on the vehicle. the lift was professionally installed and is one of the top kits on the market. since this time, i have replaced the steering stabilizer about every 10k-12k miles. each time the i do, this reduces the problem for a short period of time. each time i have discussed the issue with a jeep service center, i've been told that this is a lift issue and not jeep's problem. from the many complaints that i continue to read on jeep forums in which people are experiencing this issue, i strongly believe that this is an issue with the design of the front suspension/steering system on the jk. i have read reports from people experiencing this with the stock suspension, as well as a variety of lift systems and tire/rim configurations. if there is some way to fix this that jeep is aware of, they should be disclosing it to the owners of the vehicles, if not they should make efforts to investigate and try to resolve this issue. *tr
