Uncontrollable wobble in front end on highway causing vehicle to be unsafe (referred to as the death wobble)
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, he noticed violent shaking from the front end of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for diagnosis. the mechanic performed a frontal alignment, wheel balance and replaced the stabilizer bar. the failure persisted after the repairs were performed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 49,000. *tr
Experienced jeep wrangler's death wobble...my vehicle shook so bad i almost lost control of the wrangler's i had to apply my brakes at speeds of 55 mph est. while on interstate 80 in new jersey almost causing a multiply vehicles crash. just left dealership and they were unable to verify my concerns. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that when driving over a pot hole or any uneven road surface, the front end of the vehicle would shake violently. the failure recurred when the contact was traveling 45 mph or above. the contact would have to stop driving momentarily in order to stop the shaking failure. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer where the steering shock was replaced, but did not correct the failure. the contact also stated that when the vehicle was filled with gasoline, fuel would spill out of the tank. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 67,000.
I was traveling on the freeway yesterday afternoon 11/1/12 driving at 60 mph. while driving out of no where the jeep's front end started shaking out of control. it felt like the front end was about to fall off.. i could not control the jeep at this point so i stepped on my brakes and slowed the vehicle to about 20 mph before the shaking stopped. today i took it in to a local alignment shop so they can diagnose it and they told me that the whole front steering assembly is about shot! they specifically said that the most wear was on the tie rods and front track bar in which will cause the geometry of the steering to be thrown off. they called it the "death wobble" and that it was common in these jeeps. i truly think that jeep needs to open a recall for these parts ( front track bar/ tie rod assembly) before some one is killed! i do not want to think about what would of happened if i didn't gain control of the vehicle yesterday. i could of caused a pile up and killed someone if not myself on i5.. thank god my kids were not with me and no accident occured. please assist in this complaint as there has been hundreds of complaints about this very same problem all over the web yet nothing has been addressed with chrysler. thank you. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
While driving at approx 40 mph, jeep struck a small (very shallow) pothole. front end of jeep began to shake violently. this has happened on two other occassions in the last month, all between 40 and 50 mph. each time the jeep hit a bump in the road. jeep is stock, no lifts, no off road use, original factory tires: goodyear wrangler p255/75r17, properly inlfated to factory specs, low mileage 27394. the wobble doesn't stop until the vehicle is slowed drastically, steering is difficult while the wobble is occuring. is this a recall item? manufacture reimbursement? any information regarding this issue would be appreciated. *tr

I have been experiencing the "death wobble" on my 2007 jeep wrangler sahara for the past year now. when it first started i replaced the tires and it appeared to correct the problem for 8-9 months. then the problem re-appeared so i had the tires rotated. corrected the problem for approximately 5000 miles. just this morning while driving into work my jeep started to shake violently starting at 50 mph. in the past, my jeep will experience the death wobble between 50-60 mph. i need to slow down to around 20 mph for the wobble to stop. this is not safe! especially driving in rush hour and i need to constantly slow down to speeds below the minimum speed limit requirement in my state. all parts on my jeep are stock / straight from the assembly line (except for the new tires, air filter, oil, and wiper blades). i can be the only driver to this vehicle as other drivers in my family refuse to drive because of the death wobble. i haven't brought it into a jeep dealer yet (although after reading threads on the internet it appears jeep denies it to be an issue). this is not safe and this is my primary vehicle. it is happening to many jeep owners and if jeep wants to keep its business they should start addressing the issue... *tr
Hit a slight bump at highway speeds and the jeep suddenly started shacking violently. this is also commonly known as the "death wobble". i had no control over my vehicle and had to swerve over and stop, causing traffic behind me to have to react suddenly.
At highway speed my steering wheel and front end began to shake violently. this occurred when hitting a small joint in the pavement. the only way to stop the shaking was to slow down from 60 to approximately 30 miles per hour on the interstate. *tr
Violent shaking from front wheels after hitting small bumps in road. steering shook side to side. had to bring jeep to complete stop for shaking to stop. very dangerous. jeep did this nearly every day. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the front end of the vehicle would violently shake whenever driven over bumps. the dealer was notified and stated that the vehicle needed to be brought in for a diagnosis and repair. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 90,000.
Steering column shakes violently after hitting small bumps, usually in a turn. very close to causing accidents due to the need to brake quickly to slow down and eliminate the shaking. its very disappointing this is not published nor anyone acted on this. incident has now happened approx 20 times and vehicle has no after market parts. *tr
Was driving down the road about 45 mph, hit a bump and the vehicle began to shake so violently that i was convinced a wheel was about to fall off. i immediately stopped on the side of the road to inspect the vehicle but could find nothing wrong. in researching the problem online i found out that is a common occurrence known as a "death wobble." i was lucky in that i was driving on a rarely traveled back road when the incident occurred, had this happened on a major highway i could see this as a very dangerous situation.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph or higher and when going over a bump, the front end of the vehicle would shake violently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the contact was informed that replacing the axle housing and the front wheel bearings may remedy the shaking. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 35,000. the current mileage was approximately 45,000... updated 02-07-13 *bf updated 02/13/2013 *js
As i was driving through the entrance to the baltimore harbor tunnel, i hit a bump and the steering wheel began to shake violently on my jeep wrangler. in addition, the front end of the vehicle vibrated and shook violently. i had no place to stop, a bus was behind me, and i had trouble keeping my jeep in one lane. since there was no place to pull over, i slowed down and when i reached a speed between 15 to 20 miles per hour, the shaking stopped and i was able to continue on. during my trip that day, i had three more episodes of violent shaking as i hit bumps in the road when i was traveling between 50 and 60 miles per hour. i had recently read an article about this problem and this issue appears to be a common problem for jeep wranglers, although i had never experienced the problem before. my jeep is a 2007 4-door wrangler which only has 10,400 miles on it because i usually keep it garaged at a beach home in delaware and i use it only during summer weekends. the jeep is a stock model with no after market modifications. i had driven it home to maryland to have a dealer checkup before i returned the jeep to the beach. the problem happened on my third trip after the dealer service but it was my first trip driving on a highway. my daughter was in the car with me and she and i were extremely disturbed and consider this issue a major safety issue. since my research indicates this is a widespread problem, i feel strongly the ntsb should take the appropriate action to have chrysler address this issue before there is a fatality. i am extremely thankful that the bus behind me in the baltimore harbor tunnel had good brakes. *tr
While driving down the road at about 40-45mph my right front tire hit a bump. when that happened the entire front end began to vibrate violently. the only thing that cured the issue was to brake the vehicle. once it got down to about 15mph it finally stopped and i was able to continue. this has been an ongoing issue with this jeep. this has happened before and the dealership replaced tie rods and a steering dampener but it's never gone away completely. *tr

This was one of the worst times since i bought my jeep used in oct of 2011 that it did this horrible shaking between 55-60 mph. it has done it several times since then and recently was worse than ever!! it started at 40 mph and continued even over 60 mph it was so bad i needed to pull over, as i couldn't control it. i have since read online that this is an issue many jeep owners face-especially 2007. i am going to contact jeep as i want it fixed, i could have crashed if i weren't in the far right lane on the highway at the time of incident!!! it needs to be addressed and recalled to be repaired. i'm hoping jeep and my local dealer can fix it and it never happens again! *tr
I have loved this jeep since the day i got it, at about a few years after owning it i had experienced something i just couldn't believe!!! i was going down the road at 45 miles an hour when i must have hit a bump in the road, my jeep continued to shake violently and i could not stop it unless i pulled off the road and tried to come to a complete stop. i then went directly to my mechanic who then inspected the vehicle, he found nothing wrong and said he did not experience it himself. i have replaced all the shocks, new tires, brakes, steering pin and still have that problem, i did not know what it was until i started looking it up on the internet, there is even a video of someone driving a jeep exactly like mine and it is doing the same thing. i have seen hundreds of complaints on this, if something is not done someone is going to get killed when they are in ice or rain!!!! why hasn't anyone stepped up to have this fixed? i have called jeep on it and they said they have had complaints but no one is doing anything about it! really?? how about you climb into my vehicle and have this "death wobble" happen to you with your child in it??? i am 2 payments away from paying off my jeep, this just disgusts me! something needs to be done!!!!!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the front end of the vehicle started to shake violently. the contact then pulled over and started to reverse when the shaking stopped. the vehicle was taken to a body shop where it was diagnose that the control bar and the steering were faulty. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the vehicle was not further repaired. the failure mileage was 99,900 and the current mileage was 100,034.
This jeep is a death trap and a money trap. my first incident occurred feb 16th, 2011 and cost 600.00. needed a new steering dampner which they replaced. two months later same thing happens and they replace the same piece with the newer steering dampner. two days ago the same thing happens again and now i need to spend more money to fix the same problem. researched the issue and it's called "death wobble" had i known this existed i would never have bought this car, i feel so unsafe in this car. i will never buy another jeep and will tell everyone i know to not buy one. these cars should be recalled and fixed for free, and this company should be sued for making cars that are this unsafe. *js

When the vehicle reaches approximately 50 mph, the vehicle begins shake. the dealership replaced the drivers side hub on the front axle which wasn't covered under the warranty. i had it aligned & the wheels balanced, which helped a little, but it was still shaking. two months later i took it back to the dealership & they're replacing all the ball joints and the passenger side hub on the front axle. i had already replaced the upper ball joints previously. *js
The vehicle began a violent shimmy, that you could only hold on the steering wheel for dear life, until you had almost stopped until it was under control. have now learned, commonly referred to the death wobble. the steering stabilizer was replaced at dealers recommendation, but it didn't solve the problem. we are still working on a resolution, but it is a very scary situation. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. while traveling 40 mph, the contact drove over a small bump and noticed that the vehicle had begun to sway violently from left to right. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on several occasions, where the tires were replaced and a front end alignment was performed. the failure continued. the failure and current mileages were 53,000.
I own a 2007 jeep wrangler that has a violently shimmy or a so called "death wobble". it has nearly caused me to go off the road on several occasions. after some research, i've come to find out this a common problem among jeep owners which the chrysler co. refuses to acknowledge. it's been to the dealership twice and the problem still isn't fixed. to my dismay, the have no problem charging me for their ineffective attempts. my model jeep, as well as others, needs to be recalled and my money refunded. *tr

For your urgent review and action: i was driving down the road at 45 mph and the front wheels and steering wheel of my jeep started to shake violently! i had no control over the steering of the jeep. i looked up on the internet this problem and discovered much information including videos that describe this violent shake as the "death wabble". this violent shake continues to happen when i get up to speeds between 45mp and 60mph. so far i have replaced the steering stabalizer shock and now my jeep is back in the shop at a local tire and front-end service center getting new tires, wheel balancing and a front-end alignment. because of the severity of this issue, the service center said they will not "test drive" the jeep after this work is complete because they are not willing to put their employees lives at risk. this is a major problem for me if i can't even have a service provider test drive my vehicle after they do their work because they fear something terrible could happen to their lives. it makes me very scared to drive this jeep. i am requesting that chrysler-jeep immediately review the fixes of my jeep (including a test drive) when i get the jeep back and that they cover my expenses thus far to fix the "death wabble" plus any additional work that they may need to do to make my jeep safe to drive by eliminating this violent shaking problem. i find it hard to believe that this vehicle, with this violent shaking issue that creates loss of control of the vehicle, meets automative safety regulations. this is a "known" difficiency with various jeep products including my 2007 jeep wrangler x. in addition, i am requesting any "recall" information that may be available to fix this problem that i may have missed. i am available to provide additional information upon request to assist with my request for resolution. *tt

I hit a small bump on my morning commute on interstate 95 while riding next to a tractor trailer. my front end started shaking violently...i thought i was going to slam into the side of that tractor trailer. the so called "death wobble" is a horrifying experience, and frankly something threatening my life really pisses me off. my jeep is stock..never lifted and no modifications. i do not understand how the national highway traffic safety administration has let this one slip through the cracks. i am going to see a lawyer. i have spent so much money trying to get this resolved..and i am still not safe it is still happening..happened yesterday. now i could trade it in or sell it, but that is some real bad karma coming back. i am looking for these manufacture issues to be resolved and to know that when i drive my jeep to and from work everyday that everytime i hit a small bump or cross over a joint in a bridge, i am not at risk of killing myself or someone else due to driving a jeep wrangler. i would never recommend jeep to anyone at this point. in fact people ask me all the time how i like it and i tell them it is a piece of crap and i wouldn't buy one. feel free to contact me regarding these issues. i am sure you have heard them before as they seem to be pretty common (the violent shaking in the front end even has it's own name...the "death wobble"). why don't you go out and buy a wrangler and put your own family members in it and drive down the highway at 70? would you own a jeep wrangler or buy one for your daughter? *tr
My jeep has a death wobble that has not been resolved. i have paid hundreds of dollars and still no solution. please help!!! *tr

While driving on a secondary road at 50 mph, i crossed a bump in the road where a culvert had been replaced. the blacktop was replaced on the road and no visible obstructions were noticed. the jeep started shaking violently. i thought i had blown a tire or a ball joint had failed. i came to a stop at the side of the road with traffic behind me, fearing i'd get rear-ended making a stop so suddenly. i got out of the jeep to check the tires, etc and nothing looked out of place - no flat tires, no sign of joints failing. i got back in the jeep and slowly started driving again. this happened within a 4 week span at least 4 times at the same location. but when i would drive with others in their vehicles, there would be no problems. i ended up taking my jeep to the local garage and they replaced ball joints, u joints and also aligned the front end. i had no problem until november 1, when along another secondary road, another culvert had been replaced; again the jeep started shaking violently. again on a main highway, a week later, a bump you could not see but feel while driving, violent shaking occurred. i called my garage today and told the attendant what has been happening and they explained to me that this occurs in some chrysler and also ford vehicles. there probably is nothing else wrong, but it's something that just needs to be dealt with in owning one of these vehicles. "dealt with"???? i shouldn't have to deal with this - chrysler should deal with this - helloooo, "recall"... *tr
Steering dampener. steering box. *tr
This has to do with the death wobble that is highly been broadcasted via internet. i have a mint, completely stock jeep wrangler x unlimited. first year of the 4 door. it has not been modified at all. as said it is mint condition. i made the mistake of not driving it much, especially on highway first several years i had it. i drove a older car as my everyday vehicle. the jeep was and is my toy. i had to start driving it more in 2011, that's when the problem was clear. whenever i am driving at over 50-55 mph, and i hit a bump or groove in road it randomly goes into this violent shake. the same shake described and seen on the internet. i finally did take it to a jeep dealer, not expecting much. due to the fact that my warranty was expired. but due to the fact of the very low mileage and showroom appearance of car, i was able to convince them to address problem at no charge to me, so for. i say so for, due to the fact that the dealer has replaced numerous parts underneath, but problem still there. now i am waiting for decision from higher ups at jeep to decide what to do with me. i feel that there is some engineering problems overlooked when designed and built. they(jeep) know they have a major problem.i am very surprised that there has not been a death involved with this. it is serious. my wife refuses to drive in my jeep. she calls it christines little sister carla. i am stuck. i cannot trade vehicle in, for i would be worried that the next owner/driver would not be as lucky as i have been, and not been in a accident. *tr

Severe wobble in front end where control of vehicle is hard to maintain. it began intermittently and briefly and now is repetitive and sustained. my wrangler is now being evaluated for the fourth time and needs a steering dampener replaced (which was the recall) along with replacing upper and lower ball joints. chrysler reportedly had 4,000 of these vehicles recalled under service bulletin number: csn-j34 with this same issue. my vehicle is not included in the recall. this vehicle and others like it is going to kill someone. the front end of the vehicle violently shakes/wobbles at normal highway speeds. i was told by the dealer that this was a "known engineering flaw".
With cruise control on, traveling 65 mph north on i-95, melbourne, florida, the wrangler steering wheel started shaking violently almost loosing my grip. the entire jeep started shaking violently as if the wheels were coming off. i had to apply the brakes, turn on emergency flashers and slowed down to about 25 mph. the wrangler evened out after slowing down to 25mph on i-95. the steering wheel, being almost uncontrollable, could have caused lives lost. please don't wait for that to happen. something has to be done now. this is a stock jeep. thank you.
Death wobble - i can drive the jeep down the highway and once it hits above 45 miles an hour it will start to shake extensively. i have to start putting on the break immediately to stop the jeep from shaking and regain control of the vehicle. with the speed limits on the highways 60 - 75 miles an hour the vehicle problem makes it impossible for me to take many highways. this jeep is my only means of transportation to and from work and transporting my children. i have avoided over 5 near miss accidents because of this problem with my children in the vehicle. it has almost cost me my job because of having to avoid traveling in the jeep. *tr
