IGNITION 1

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Vehicle caught fire while sitting in driveway in front of home 30 minutes after driving the vehicle. total loss.

For the second time a brake line has broken causing brake failure while driving. i called jeep and was told there has been no recall and the dealership's service department takes no responsibility. my daughter was driving around a circle at a major highway intersection when the brakes failed. i guess a certain number of people must die before a recall is made. have had an electrical issue with blinkers since i owned the car. when turning off blinker when changing lanes, the opposite blinker comes on. trying to turn that side off, then makes the other side come back on. it takes going back and forth for a few times before it will just turn off.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated while driving at 55 mph, when the engine stalled. the contact stated the windshield wipers and head lights flickered. the contact saw smoke coming from under the front of the vehicle and saw fire shortly after. the contact stated he pulled off negative battery cable from the battery and the fire turned off on it's own. a police was not filed. the fire department was not contacted. the vehicle was towed to independent mechanic, where he was told the tipm/fuse box shorted out and melted. the vehicle was not repaired. the local dealer had not been notified of failure. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer had not been informed of failure. the failure mileage was 85,000.the vin was not available.

Driver's side door lock makes clicking noise, will only unlock/lock when done on inside manually or on the outside by key. door switch and key fob both do not unlock/lock door when parked. the door does not auto-lock when the vehicle is in motion.

Factory car radio goes on and off for no reason. when it goes off the unit seems to have no power to it and it comes back on at random times. you can go weeks without the radio and it will come back on for a day or so for no reason.

The vehicle will not shut off. drove it into the carport turned off the ignition and the vehicle would not stop running, even with the key turned off and removed from the ignition... all gauges were randomly turning on and off, and the horn was intermittently blaring. the vehicle was stationary at the time.

Engine dies at highway speed . all warning lights on dash light up. after pulling over to side of road, wont start for 5-10 minutes. vehicle has done this 3 times in last 6 weeks. cannot diagnose because no codes are recorded.

Tipm electrical issue. causing inoperable turn signals, parking lights, horn, power window on drivers side, and sometimes, doest start of turn over. auto repair shop says it needs a tipm replacement

My car started acting up. neighbors would come regularly ring my house bell to let me know that the jeep's headlights were on. the jeep was parked in the street. the problem: it wouldn't stay locked. it would automatically lock and unlock whenever. we only have street parking at home and it was very stressful to leave the car open at night in the street or even when going places. also the windshield wipers started getting stuck in the middle of the windshield or sometimes stopped working completely. this was very dangerous especially when it happened at high speeds on the highway! finally, the right blinker wouldn't work and that problem seemed to be related to the broken locking/unlocking system. after going back and forth to two different mechanics 5 times (each time they said it was fixed but it wasn't), after replacing the tipm and all the wiper motor parts and reprogramming everything properly, it is now a functional car again! it was a big bill and on top of that i had to spend money on lyft and was very handicapped without a car!

Vehicle was stationary, inside of garage with high ceilings. vehicle caught on fire after sitting with engine off for more 3 hours. looked like started at fuse box area. *tt *tr

Jeep will not start intermittently, when turning the key over the jeep will click once and the starter will not turn over. sometimes you can try agin right away and it'll start. sometimes you have to wiggle the gear shifter, and sometimes it takes awhile to get it to turn over and start. i was told it is either an ignition problem or a neutral safety switch, but geared towards the latter. it does it whether parked on a hill, flat, warm or cold. according to many jeep pages and forums this is a very common problem

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the remote door lock would not operate. upon inspection, it was discovered that the fuse to the doors had blown. the fuse was replaced but, moments later, had blown a second time. the vehicle was taken to the dealer jeep, dodge, chrysler and fiat of yakima washington where it was diagnosed that the tipm module was faulty and needed to be replaced. the module was replaced, but the failures continued. during the repair, it was also discovered that the wire harness to the tipm had melted. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 95,000.

I just purchased my jeep about a month ago. i had a 30 day powertrain warranty from the dealer, but it did not include electrical issues. the tipm was defective, and my jeep will not start now as a result. i contacted a parts dealer and was told the part is on back order and no release date available.

Received recall notice (r13/nhtsa 15v-222) for clutch interlock switch. i removed the part (1 clip and one connector) and tried to get a replacement part at local dealer. they attempted to charge for the part and i asked for no charge due to recall. they refused to give me the part because i "might not install it correctly". they wanted me to schedule appointment for repair (put the part back in and drive to the dealer, which gave them enough faith that i could plug it in?). i didn't want to wait at dealer to have a part plugged in, so contacted fca recall assistance. debate ensued regarding what fca will and will not pay for. i proposed that i will buy the part and submit for reimbursement. i was told that i might not be reimbursed. after review of title 49, i called fca recall assistance back and conceded some aspect of my original argument (based on title 49, 30120 (a)(a)(i)) and offered to let the dealer come over and clip in the part. of course, they refused and recall assistance recommended taking it to the dealer, in essence, installing the suspect part they are concerned that i might not install correctly (the basis for refusal to provide the part), then drive to dealer). i asked if i there was so much concern about proper installation, why would fca endorse the installation of the old part. fca then recommended that i pay to tow the vehicle to the dealer for the repair. first of all, should i be reimbursed for the part, if i purchased and installed? fca position is maybe. secondly, why is reimbursement at the discretion of fca?

I was driving down the road and the horn started blowing and would not stop, the windshield wipers started wiping at high speed, windshield washer fluid was squirting out, and would not stop. i turned the vehicle off and issues kept happening. the gauges and speedometer stopped working at this time. luckily i was pulling in my driveway. *tr

My airbag light comes on intermittently. i have tried cleaning the wiring connectors under the front seat but this has had no effect on the light going on or off. this happens sometimes as it is sitting still as well as while driving. i have found this being an issue while researching this problem online in every forum that i have searched in. this has been happening for several months now and i am concerned that the airbags won't deploy when and if needed. i have kids that drive and ride in this vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle restarted after several attempts. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the vin was unavailable. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 69,000.

The horn will not work and the air bag light chimes off and on. and now i have intermittent starting issue. i can drive up the road and cut it offand then get back in and it won't start. but wait about 10 minutes and it'll start right up

During normal street driving the air bag light was turning on and off for the 5 mile drive home. tried turning car off and on, the. tried pushing the fuses down to make sure it wasn't that. also recently replaced the tipm. so far, i'm not liking this jeep. a lot of problems. *tr

My jeep lost all power and brakes while driving. the abs and brake lines are charred throughout the entire vehicle from overheating and the main wiring harness was damaged as well. the vehicle is currently and national dodge jacksonville nc awaiting repairs. mike in the service department says the abs overheated but no fire but another mechanic i had look at it said there was a small fire.

Upon starting vehicle, horn sound constant, wipers turn on, windshield sprayer squirts, back up light turn on and drivers side headlight illuminates. turned off ignition and removed key, dashboard lost power, but engine continued to run, disconnected battery and approximately 90 seconds later, engine quite running

Headlights began flashing, horn honking, and door locks would not respond. could not disable horn with key fob as usual. this has happened multiple times in the last few weeks. the jeep dealer says that it is a faulty tipm (totally integrated power module)......updated 11/13/15 *bf updated 10/26/2017*cn

Jeep overheated in traffic. turns out cooling fan was not working. all fuses and relays were checked. turns out it was the tipm. you would think by now jeep would pay for this fix. especially since this part is a nation wide back order. and it's a $600 part!

Driving down the road when suddenly the horn started honking, wipers started on their own as well as wiper fluid squirting , radio came on and lights turning on and off. pulled over and even after the car was turned off and key removed ignition the car remained running with all electrical equipment running off and on. it seems that many other people have had this problem with their jeep/ chrysler vehicles. i replaced the battery cables and started the car again, it was fine for about 30 seconds then it all happened again until i removed the battery cables. i removed the battery cables to the car because i'm concerned that the electrical problem may cause a fire under the hood and possibly burn my house down. *tr

I parked my jeep in my drive way around 12 pm after on monday, april 6th. around 4 pm the same day a fire, that appeared to be electrical in nature, started in the dash inside the factory gps/radio system. the key was not in the ignition. i was alerted by my neighbor that my jeeps emergency flashers were on and it was smoking. we rushed to the jeep, the windows were all burnt black the fire was just smoldering because the doors and windows were shut. my dad and i quickly grabbed two fire extinguishers and when we opened the doors the fire engulfed the entire front dash. after a few uses of the fire extinguishers we managed to put the fire out before too much damage was done. the entire front dash was melted and the windshield was cracked. we suspect the vehicle to be totaled but we have heard back from the insurance company. *tr

Clockspring failure disables horn and airbags

My jeep wrangler unlimited x has stalled 3 times while i was driving. the dashboard lights up like a christmas tree and the vehicle's power goes out for what seems like no more than 2 seconds. there have been quite a few other problems with this jeep, but most have been covered under warranty and the lifetime drive-train warranty. re: question #2 i can not give any dates, so i put today's date. i know for a fact that the vehicle has experienced the aforementioned problem 3x's as it is an unforgettable experience. *tr

The passenger side low beam operates intermittently. the problem has been traced to the solid state relay on the tipm printed circuit board. the low beam usually operates after having the selector set to high beam for 20-30 minutes. the only remedy is replacing the tipm at substantial cost for a relatively simple and very important, safety related vehicle function. replacement tipm units are not readily available, and there is no temporary repair possible. this failure effectively precludes legal operation of the vehicle until the costly repair can be completed. *tr

On the 2007 jeep wrangler (lhd) dashboard, the airbag warning light flashes on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there is something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags.this has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2007 jeep wrangler (lhd) owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. this faulty clockspring is the culprit for potential airbag failure in the 2007 jeep wrangler (lhd) during an accident or premature deployment when simply driving around. daimler chrysler has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying. *tr

I started my 2007 jeep wrangler 4x2 (manual shift) and was sitting in the drive way (the vehicle was not in gear) when the jeep turned itself off and restarted. at the time it restarted itself, the horn began blowing non-stop, the front and rear windshield wipers turned on, washer fluid sprayed from the rear wipers, the dash lights turned on, the radio turned on, and the interior lights turned on. i attempted to turn off the vehicle and remove the key from the ignition. the horn kept blowing, both sets of wipers were on, the interior lights remained on, the engine kept running, the dash lights remained lit, and the radio wouldn't shut off. i tried to restart the vehicle and turn it off, but nothing helped. the horn was blowing like a demon. the neighbors raced over to help me. we manually stalled the jeep to stop the engine, but the horn, radio, lights, and wipers remained on. we disconnected the battery terminal - horn kept blowing. (this wiped out the computer codes). then we disconnected the horn to keep it from blowing non-stop. this is the 4th time this has happened to my jeep. on thanksgiving day 2014 - the vehicle turned itself off and turned itself back on while driving at 45mph. the abs and compass module has been replaced. software updates have been completed. the clockspring was replaced. they claim the tipm was replaced in 2007. i called the chrysler customer care and the dealership on all occasions after each incident and they basically told me that if they can't see any codes, then the issue didn't happen. they want to see of video. i need help with my demon jeep - i am totally afraid to drive it and the dealership and chrysler corporation won't help me. that thing will eventually cause a serious accident. these issues began in august 2014 and remains unresolved as of 1/17/2015. *tr

Jeep shuts off when driving on the highway. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the instrument panel failed to operate and when the brake pedal was depressed the vehicle failed to switch gears. the contact had to engage the manual overdrive switch in order to release the vehicle out of park. the independent mechanic diagnosed that the total integrated power module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

Wipers suddenly start, sway bar indicator turns on, headlights turn off and vehicle stalls. takes up to 2 days for vehicle to restart. *dt

Totally integrated power module (tipm) failure causing every electrical system to malfunction - usually at the same time. alarm/horn, wipers/washer, radio, gauges, etc), to which removing the key from the ignition has no effect. only solution is to remove battery connection ( and apologize to those around you in traffic for the inconvenient show the vehicle just put on). manufacturer recall of tipms only covered certain manufacture dates, despite the problem not being limited to just that one group of vehicles. repair (replacement of tipm) is > $1000. *tr

The horn stopped working and then a day later the air bag warninglite indicating malfunction came on intermittently and then stayed on chiming from time to time.it goes off and then comes back on when the vehicle starts moving again.it sometimes goes off when turning right.my mechanic said there have been several complaints about it,it is the clockscrew he said nad when i looked it up ,it was the exact description.pitiful is all i have to say, this is a safety issue and jeep should fix it immediately. *tr

While driving my jeep wrangler on a public road, the entire electrical system shutdown. this shutdown caused the power steering, brakes and electrical aspects of the vehicle to stop functioning. this is now the second time that this has happened to my vehicle. once the vehicle was put into "park" , i tried to restart the vehicle with no success. the second time the vehicle started back up with no incident. there are many dangers involved with a vehicle suddenly "shutting down". my research has shown that there are many other jeep vehicle owners that are experiencing similar experiences. *tr

When driving at a speed of 40 mph the jeep's dash lights came on, the horn started blowing, the windshield wipers came on, the locks went on and off and the car stalled. this has happened numerous times over the past year and a half at different speeds, while idling, and different weather conditions. *tr

On 6 june, i noticed my jeep jk air bag indicator illuminated and then disappears within a minute. later on it started again and has now frequently turns on and off approximately one minute or more but less than two minutes regardless of the speed of driving. i've researched about this issue and several other owners had the same issue (2007-08 models). chrysler co said it is not a recall, but according to several website says it is and is covered on an extended warranty or 150,000 miles. *tr

Horn stopped working completely, checked all the fuses and everything looks fine. i've traced it to a faulty clock spring in the steering column. *tr not safe and will not pass inspection!

I started the vehicle and put the windshield wipers on due to the weather and smoke started coming out from the right side of vehicle caught it on time and it was the power module fuse box. someone is going to get hurt if jeep don't fix this problem. *tr

I have had 4 electrical/engine events with the most recent occurring in july, 2014 after picking up my kids from camp. as i slowed down for a light, all dash board lights came on, the radio went dead and the engine cut out. luckily i was coming to a stop at the light, and as i was looking at the dash trying to figure out what happened, the jeep then turned back on.please help. *tr

Jeep died completely - lost power and electrical while driving 60 mph on a hwy. this is the 4th time this has occurred - each time under different driving conditions. there is a recall for this issue with jeep upto january 22, 2007 models. my jeep is a february 2007 model so they are saying my jeep is not covered under this recall. *tr

I took my wife's 2007 jeep wrangler jk (4 door automatic) to courthouse shell here locally to get the state inspection done (my first time for this since purchasing it on july 1st 2012 from checkered flag toyota in greenbrier). i received a call saying that the horn did not work, what did i want to do? my wife had said that it had been working the previous week. well, i said that i want it fixed. the mechanic showed me that the fuse in the fuse-box was not getting any power and they needed more time to troubleshoot it, so they kept it overnight, they then incorrectly said it was a simple relay which they would order and receive later that second day, and they finally figured out that the air bag and the horn were incapacitated due to a faulty $269 airbag clockspring assembly which had to be special ordered from a dealership, so they ended keeping it over the weekend, the steering wheel had been disassembled and would cost more in labor to reassemble. another option given that he explained to me that he could run a jumper wire to a pushbutton switch to make the horn work but the airbag would not be guaranteed to function as needed in an accident. i made the safe decision to have them replace the entire assembly. i was quite upset though to have to dish out $389.75 total for parts and labor. i have the receipt to show it in the event that jeep ever decides to recall that flimsy and unsafe assembly. there seems to be many complaints lodged regarding this same issue online. considering that this issue not only affects the horn but also the airbag system which was unknowingly disabled for a week or so, the safety of the driver should always be paramount. thank god that my wife did not have an accident, the airbag would most likely not have deployed. i will be taking this up with jeep. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the instrument panel warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel and the speedometer seized. the vehicle then stalled. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who stated that the alternator would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure persisted. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 07v291000 (electrical system) but was advised by the manufacturer that the vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 63,400.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, he began to smell plastic burning. the vehicle was stopped and upon further inspection, he saw that the fuse box was on fire. the fire was extinguished and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the contact was awaiting diagnosis of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was unavailable. the failure and current mileage was 68,000.

First occurrence dec 6th 2012, backing out of an inclined driveway. vehicle seemed as if it had no power, stalled, spitting and sputtering like it was starving for gas. finally got it out of the driveway and was about 15 miles from closest jeep dealership in ocala fl, and nursed it there, spitting and sputtering and stalling the whole trip. left it overnight and got a call the next day where they had found the problem and a couple of other things wrong (unrelated to the problem) i approved the fixes and after $677.00 later drove off the lot. the only thing i can see on the invoice that would have caused the original problem is a line that reads "cleaner-fuelsystem" and has a $59.00 part and a $106.00 labor charge. on january 13th 2013 it starts acting up again. i take it back to same dealership the next day and complain that i'm not going to come in every month and pay a $90.00 diagnostics fee for something they said was fixed. so they plug it in and the code tells them i was running "lean" however they have no idea this time what's wrong. and of course it's not doing it so they "can't fix what's not broke". between jan and july it has done this many times, in the beginning it was once or twice a month but now will do it almost every trip. when it stalls completely i loose ps & pb, very dangerous. it now stalls at speeds of around 50 mph and i just have to pull onto shoulder to restart. sometimes it restarts right away and other times i have to sit a short bit. it seems to be related to longer trips, 1-2 hours. but sometimes will happen after being on the road for 15 minutes. the stalling at 50 mph and loosing ps & pb is the most concerning in traffic. *tr

Vehicle would not start. has done this on multiple occasions. made a click and started to start but then nothing. battery is brand new. further researching online there is numerous automatic jeep jk's with this issue. apparently an improper ground is the culprit- seems there is enough people having this problem to warrant a recall?? [xxx] *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, she turned and the vehicle performed as if it were going to stall. the contact jerked at the steering wheel and the failure ceased. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnosis. the dealer stated that they had to reset the totally integrated power module. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 07v291000 (electrical system). the failure and current mileages were not available. the vin was not available.

Windshield wipers and lights failed to work during icy rain/snowy conditions. road visibility was significantly impaired and i couldn't see my instrument panel. i had no option but to continue home at very slow speeds to avoid an accident. after approximately 20 minutes of driving without wipers, the wipers suddenly turned on by themselves, moving very fast. i could not adjust the wiper speed at all. when i arrived home and turned the jeep off and removed the keys, wipers still would not turn off. i had to disconnect the battery to stop the wipers. dealer claims it was a faulty wiper motor. i advised them i think it's a faulty tipm based on what i researched/read online. they assured me the tipm was working fine. when they ordered and installed the new wiper motor, it didn't fix the problem. they then admitted they were wrong with the diagnostic and the tipm was faulty. they advised me that i need a new tipm and that all tipms are on nationwide back order. seems tipm failure is a recurring theme amongst certain jeep wrangler models. if your lights and wipers can go out while operating the vehicle, this is a huge safety hazard. i called chrysler to complain and have yet to hear back from them. *tr

While driving down a 7% grade hill, the brake pedal went to the floor, warning lights on the dash lit up and the engine raced. followed by ineffective brake modulation, more lights, increased speed, and panic of wife (driver), children in car seats 2), and dogs (3). wife was able to use emergency brake to slow far enough to shift automatic transmission to 2nd, followed by 1st, pull off to the side of the road and jam it into park. she drove to the bottom of the hill and into a parking area in 4wd low. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where they found nothing concrete to blame. they speculated that a corroded battery cable caused a voltage spike(s) which the computer interpreted as the vehicle being in a skid and the computer took away all driver control of braking. luckily, they all survived.
