We have classified the 337 complaints from 2005 Jeep Wrangler about FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE into the following categories.
4/2009-fuel spitting out when gassing up ( when filled, does not stop) took to dealership. states d/t bad vent valve. installed a new tank. in 2013- started back doing the same thing and continues. i have to gauge, when i think it's filled and stop. *tr
Fuel overflows and spills every time the vehicle is refueled. problem has been identified as a bad check valve in the gas tank which requires the gas tank to be replaced. same tank and just a matter of time until it recurs. this is a safety hazard and an environmental concern as approximately 1 cup of fuel is spilled on the operator. *tr
Every single time i put gas in the jeep, it overflows. even if i listen carefully and try to stop it before it is completely full. it sprays gas all over me, the parking lot and the jeep. this is very dangerous and i'm afraid of a fire. *tr
Gas tank always spills over on the side of my 2005 jeep wrangler, and usually on myself. has been a recurring problem since my first fill-up. *tr
2005 jeep wrangler rubicon unlimited. no excessive wear or tear. vehicle has been splashing gas every time the tank is topped off for over a year. this causes anywhere from a half pint to a quart of gas to spray and run down the side of the jeep. as far as i know jeep has not issued a recall to fix what i see as a significant safety issue. *tr
My gas tank overflows after the machine clicks off. this happens every time in my 2005 jeep wrangler with 28k miles on it. *tr
I cannot fill my gas tank full without gas coming out spilling on the vehicle and on me. i own a 2005 jeep wrangler. it only has 25,258 miles on it. when i purchased the vehicle i did not purchase an extended warranty. i spoke to chrysler motors corp customer center (1-800-992-1997) (ref. #18329606) on february 10, 2009 about this safety issue. i am requesting that chrysler repairs the gas tank for me because lives are at danger when the vehicle is filled up with gas and gas comes out of the tank. gas is getting on the vehicle, my hands and the ground at the pump. armbruster motor co. (1-800-766-0980) informed me on february 6, 2009, the only way to correct this issue was to purchase a new gas tank. the cost of a new gas tank would be around $500.00. chrysler told me that they will not pay for a new gas tank but if i pay for the new gas tank they would cover the new tank for 12 months or 12,000 miles. i believe chrysler should pay for this repair because they designed the faulty gas tank that was originally placed on the vehicle. this is an extremely dangerous situation when i fill my vehicle with gas. it is not like the radio doesn't work, spilled gas is a fire hazard. *tr thank you, jennifer willman
Gas tank spills every time i fill it up. squirts out and onto my clothes, ground, paint job and fender. me and many others are having this problem. recall!!!! *tr
Jeep wrangler always sprays out fuel a second or two after the automatic shutoff shuts off the pump. fuel is sprayed on the vehicle, ground, pump, and any person standing anywhere near the nozzle. it does this at multiple gas stations, and multiple pumps. running the pump on the slowest possible setting is the only workaround, which results in a small amount spilling on the ground. this has occurred on both my jeep wranglers, and has been doing it for over a year now. *tr
The vehicle has spewed gasoline all over the vehicle and the person who fuels the vehicle since the first time the vehicle was filled with fuel after purchase. the issue was reported to the dealer and was ignored. there was nothing printed on warranty print out after service for multiple items(steering dampener). years after i spoke with same dealer and was told to bring it in as it was a "common" problem and chrysler had been repairing on other vehicles. upon arrival they try to charge me for repair. i refused. i am stunned that the nhtsa has elected to ignore this problem and label it as an internet sensation when there is literally a mountain of empirical evidence. i can provide videos, pictures, and make my self available for inspection today. i can show this problem is widespread and can be repeated on a large number vehicles using the same part. this is also an environmental issue as large quantities of fuel are being dumped on the ground on a daily basis. i find that the chrysler as well as nhtsa are in fact negligent by not pursuing their investigation of this hazardous condition. i have to question the relevance of nhtsa when such an obvious defect is reported only to be ignored. your organization has essentially told the vehicle owners that if they organize on the internet their claims will be considered to lack merit. in addition, the same parts in other chrysler products can be shown to have been considered by your organization to be faulty, yet ignored in earlier models. in fact, chrysler at times replaces these same parts at random in other models that have not been declared in a recall. *note: the date of first instance is not correct as i cannot recall the exact date of purchase. however, this has occurred every single time i fill the vehicle up and has so since the first time. i purchased the vehicle used but under mfg warranty
Every time i fill up my gas tank at the pump fuel flies up out of the tank and all over the place. everytime i fill up i have to clean gas off of my vehicle and the ground. *tr
Fuel surges back out of fill tube while refueling. it happens everytime i refuel the vehicle. huge safety factor because about a quart of gasoline gets on me, the vehicle, and the ground. called chrysler to complain and they will not repair the issue because i'm the second owner. i have heard of numerous wrangler owners with the same issue. *tr
I do not recall exactly when this issue began. but my 2005 jeep wrangler rubicon unlimited spills fuel every time i fill up the tank. the gas does not shut off when full and over a cup of fuel spills out. the dealer ship claims that they have never heard of such a problem on jeeps older than 2007. *tt
Starting at approximately 25000 miles, gas began spilling out of the filler nozzle during refueling. this occurs regardless of station location. the jeep was brought to a mechanic who claimed it was an issue inside the tank. no repairs have been made at this time. problem still occurs. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that when attempting to refuel the vehicle, the fuel would spew back out onto the ground. the dealer made two attempts to duplicate the failure but to no avail. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who performed a diagnostic test and concluded that the fuel tank would need to be replaced. the parts needed were not readily available and the contact was awaiting the arrival of the parts for repairs. the current mileage was 25,309 and the failure mileage was unknown. updated 03/24/11*lj updated 1/4/11 *cn
I have a 2005 jeep wrangler rocky mountain edition. every time i fill up a the gas station gas over flows. it doesn't matter if i barely squeeze the handle, or leave it on the auto flow notches. it has been doing this for the past 2 years. *tr
Gas spits out of filler neck because the pump wont cut off. *tr
Fuel surges back out of fill tube while refueling. this happens everytime i refuel no matter what gas station, gas pump, how much fuel is added. about a quart of fuel will burp back out and will splash on the vehicle, ground, and person refueling the jeep. i took my jeep to the dealership where they admitted the problem is a faulty check valve located inside of the gas tank. the only repair is to replace the gas tank. i had to pay for the repairs because i'm the second owner of the vehicle which is only 5 years old and has 53,000 miles. this is clearly a manufactures defect and a safety issue that should be looked into and should be considered to be a recall at the manufactures expense. *tr
When filling gas tank, fuel splashes back out of fill pipe. it doesn't matter how fast or slow the tank is filled, or what position the fill nozzle is placed in the fill opening, it splashes back out of the fill pipe, covering the side of the vehicle, as well as the person filling if standing too close. i see this as a very dangerous situation, as static electricity could easily ignite the fuel in this scenario. i've read on jeep blogs that the cure is to replace the fuel tank due to a defective valve in the tank at the cost of over $900. but unfortunately the replacement tank is just another defective tank, as there is not an updated unit available, thus setting up another future failure. there is not recall on this, i think there should be. please keep me advised of any actions taken in this matter. Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep wrangler. there was an excessive amount of fuel spillage coming from the fuel tank. the contact stated that the failure occurred whenever he was dispensing fuel into the fuel tank, with a response of fuel spraying out of the tank. the failure continued for a couple of seconds when the fuel tank reached full capacity. the vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction at this time. the failure mileage was 40,000. updated 3/17/10 *cn the consumer stated it happened at every fill-up. fuel will spill on the ground. the fuel dispenser will shut off when the tank is full, but fuel still sprays out. updated 05/06/10.*jb
Every time i fill the gas tank, it overflows after the nozzle clicks closed. the only way i've found to prevent this is to 'guess' when the tank is almost full, then put my ear to the opening and listen for fuel coming to the top. that's dangerous and should be unnecessary. this has been happening over the last two years. *tr
I own a 2005 jeep wrangler. when filling up the vehicle with gasoline it often doesn't register the fact that the tank is full and the gas comes pouring out. the gas leaks onto me, my jeep and the ground. this happens every time i fill my tank. i see this as a safety issue since it's bad to get gasoline on your body/clothing, it's also damaged the paint on my jeep in that area and the spillage on the ground is not good for the environment and a danger for others as well. nothing has been done to correct the failure. chrysler claims they don't see it as a "safety hazard." of course, it is a safety hazard. there is a faulty part in the gas tank/gas tank assembly that some of us cannot afford to pay for out of pocket. in fact, why should we? it's a defect from the factory. this has been ongoing but i listed the approximate incident date as the month i purchased the vehicle. *tr
When filling the vehicle with gasoline it will not stop the pump and begin to overflow. *tr
My 2005 jeep unlimited rubicon (tj) has overflowed fuel for years. the fuel pump continues to flow until fuel has overflowed the tank and fuel pours onto the ground. chrysler has covered this under warranty for other year jeep wranglers. my year is not covered and the repair is over $900.00. i was told this is just a malfunction of a valve in the fuel filler pipe. and is caused from a poor design. *tr
No events leading up to failure, just happened one day. it happened to me around 75, 000 miles on my jeep, and ever since. the problem is that when i put gas into my jeep the tank isn't venting properly, which cause gas to gush out the filler opening after the pump has automatically turn off. it doesn't matter where or when i fill up, it will do it every time unless i pump the gas is really slow. nothing has been done to correct the part. according to other jeep wrangler owners they have been told by the dealer its a faulty roll valve inside the gas tank. which requires the entire tank to be replaced. according to one dealer this is considered a normal wear item. yet a faulty roll over valve sounds like a safety item to me. i have heard of people having this same problem with 30k miles on their jeeps. *tr
When filling my fuel tank, gas comes out/backs up and spills down side of vehicle or splashes to the ground. i want to be clear that i am not topping off. this happens every time i fill up regardless of the station.
Fuel spits out of the refuel receptacle every time i fill the tank. *tr
When i fill my 2005 wrangler with fuel when it nears 15 gallons it spits fuel down the side of the vehicle and the ground. *tr
Every single time i fill my jeep up with gasoline it spits back at me. i have to stand back while filling the tank and gauge approximately how much gas i am low so i can predict when to slow down the pump, just to soften the amount of gas that is spit back. this only limits the amount that spits back, it does not stop it entirely. half of the time i end up wet with gasoline. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the locking mechanism on the gas cap failed and she was unable to put fuel into her vehicle. the dealer replaced the gas cap, but the failure recurred a year later. as of december 28, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. the failure mileage was 5,000 and current mileage was 16,000. updated 05/19/08 *bf updated 05/19/08
When pumping gas, the gas tank overflows before the gas pump senses it is full. happens with a 99% chance of happening and easily reproducible. *kb
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep wrangler. the driver was refueling when fuel was spewed out from the filler neck and onto the driver's leg. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostics. the mechanic stated the fuel tank would have to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 20,000.
The fuel tank fill with overflow gasoline during fill up. this happens with every fill up since 2006. the jeep was purchased in 2005. this seems like a common problem with jeep wranglers.
When fueling my 2005 jeep wrangler , and allowing the fuel pump to automatically turn off when the gas tank reaches the full level, fuel will often overflow out of the fill port. my jeep dealer says that the fix is to replace the gas tank and that they are aware of this problem, cost for new gas tank $800.00. *tr
The main issue of concern is what i describe as surging, what i mean is the vehicle wants to go without any input from the driver. what i have determined is that the vehicle has a fluctuating idle rpm as opposed to a steady idle rpm and when the idle rpm drops below an acceptable level the computer sends a signal to kick the throttle and the vehicle then surges. i have reported this problem to my dealer and they responded by saying they couldn't verify the concern. a co-worker recently purchased the same vehicle type, engine transmission and so on and has reported the same issue to her dealer and was also told that the concern was not verifiable. *jb
Gas overflow. *tr
The design of the fuel tank in the wrangler unlimited edition made from 2004 to 2006 causes it to hold an air bubble and blow a large amount of gas out of the filler spout when putting fuel in. this happens every time the jeep is filled up with gas. these spills are an environmental issue as well as a safety issue. *tr
Every time we fill up with gas, it overflows or sprays out when the nozzle clicks off. we took it in to get it warrantied, and jeep said it was our fault from offroading. how could that be when it has done it since brand new? they informed us it will cost us about $1000.00 to fix, i think it is a defect. *tr
My 2005 jeep wrangler spews gas out the filler every time i fill it up. this started around 30,000 miles and has been doing it since. fortunately this has not caused any serious problem yet but spilling gas every time i fill up is not only a waste but a hazard to the environment and a dangerous situation. this is not a lone incident, many reports of this exact issue have come up on internet forums and other jeep owners of similar years who i know. people are even posting videos of it on u tube! from my limited research this appears to be a faulty valve in the gas tank, which dealerships are not covering under warranty. *tr
My 2005 jeep wrangler will have gas( fuel ) spillage when filling tank. fuel nozzle will discharge fuel onto ground and side of vehicle at the end of fueling. this happens every time. this happens if nozzle shuts off by it's self or if i am filling . *tr
Normal driving results in a change in the shifting action of the automatic electronic transmission. if the vehicle is warm the electronic buzz lengthens and prevents the shifting from one gear position to the next. the transmission rumbles and skips before changing to the next gear for a second or more. the gears clearly are not engaging in a timely manner and prevents ready movement after shifting to a new gear position. after long drives this is noticeable during normal unhurried parking maneuvers. this action was initially observed at about 384 miles on odometer and brought to the attention of the dealer. the second problems has occurred on 5 or more occasions where the idle speed does not go to normal after removing pressure from the accelerator. was first noticed on hills in city of san francisco and has been noticed in traffic on several other occasions. the engine noise is quite audible when this occurs and idles above 1000 and carries vehicle at 10 plus mph on flat surfaces. the vehicle also surges after short drives and is noticeable in parking lots or garage parking. there have been three "dangerous" instances while in traffic. this will occur in both reverse and forward drives. the drive train also has a loud resonating sound which sounds as though the rotating is not uniform at low speeds. the dealer says this is a normal sound. all of these concerns were observed after about 300 miles and brought to the attention of the dealer. the dealer does not acknowledge hearing the gear sounds, said the idle would adjust after 3600 miles and has not addressed the surging. *nm
Fuel spill when filling fuel tank. happens every time. shutoff does not work
Fuel gushes out of tank during every fill up. maybe 3-9 fl. ounces pour out, maybe more. this happens if the pump is set on auto fill, the pump clicks off, but a split-second later fuels comes out foaming. if the pump is manually operated and the lever is eased so that it pumps about half speed or less, it does not gush out. this has happened since i bough the car new, i'm the original owner. i has never not done it on auto fill and it takes skill to avoid it. *tt
Whenever you fill the tank it overfills and ends up on the pavement. no matter how slow or fast you fill it. *tr
Fuel overflows every fillup. *tr
During each fuel fill up with my 2005 jeep wrangler unlimited when the tank reaches almost full, there is a back splash that occurs. fuel is forced out of the fuel tank and spill over the side of the vehicle and on the ground around the vehicle. *tr
