The clutch ignition, power switch of my truck keeps stalls. the vehicle don't start, when the clutch pedal is pushed down. also the engine crank and start without the clutch pedal being pushed down causing the vehicle to unexpectedly lurch. i was notified by a dealer after inspection that said problem is a manufacturer problem, that was on recall. however said my vehicle vin# could not be located with the recall. i called the manufacturer on 1-800-992-1997, and was told i have to pay for the repairs. i will highly appreciate your immediate intervention.
Car can not be placed in park and have it stay there, key will not come out
Shifter moves freely between park-reverse-neutral-drive-2nd-1st gears. this happens when the vehicle is turned on and off; and with or without a key in the ignition. if the shifter is bumped while driving down the road, the vehicle can be thrown into reverse and/or park. when i contacted the jeep dealer in springfield missouri, i was told that jeep has since redesigned the shifter control and the entire assembly must be replaced. cost for the entire assemble is approximately $480 plus labor. if the problem is so apparent that it can be found thousands of times using google, and if the manufacturer has since redesigned the entire shifter control system; then one would think that they should have issued a recall.
On two different occasions while driving on the highway at 60 mph to 70 mph, the engine of the vehicle shut down completely, without warning, with the loss of all steering or control over the vehicle. on two other occasions, the engine shut down completely, without warning, with the loss of any steering or control over the vehicle, after exiting the highway and entering city traffic. that is a total of four engine shut downs or stalls while driving the vehicle. the dealer can find nothing wrong with the vehicle. we just bought the vehicle, and this is nerve-wrecking and dangerous to say the least. the engine shuts down after driving long distances, and has happened from driving distances of approximately 90 miles to 160 miles. if you wait approximately one hour, the vehicle will then start up again and run. but it will stall again with complete loss of power. others on the internet have also experience this problem with jeep 3.7 and 4.7 powertech jeep motors. our jeep is a 3.7 motor. this appears to be the same problem as jeep experienced with jeep commander and jeep grand cherokee models, which were recalled. this situation can obviously be life threatening. chrysler jeep should not be allowed to put life treating vehicles on the market and these jeeps must be recalled. we ask for your help in this matter before someone is seriously injured.
Manual transmission slams out of 1st gear into neutral when accelerating from a stop. this could cause a serious rear-end collision because the vehicle is suddenly out of gear at a critical point of acceleration. it is unpredictable and the only way to prevent it is to hold the stick shift securely while accelerating. it happens quite frequently.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. while the dealer was repairing the vehicle according to nhtsa campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure), the vehicle failed to start. the technician diagnosed that the pcm was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000.
The pain on the outside roof is peeling, i do live in a state where the roads are salted however, there is no salt used on the top of the vehicle, this, while not a new vehicle should not be peeling the way it is. the front windshield had a severe chip & the installer was barely able to sand this area down enough to be able to seal the windshield. i have done some research & this is a very common problem along with the rear window regulators both of which have had to be replaced. there are problems with the emergency break & the jeep dealership gives one reason for the abs, esp among other wheel and breaking issues. and now the one thing that jeep is finally supposed to be doing something about rather than me having to put more money into this vehicle for, the gas tank recall seems to be a ridiculous fix, and i have been on a waiting list for this for months and still have not been able to get it in to get this fixed. i saw a news story that said that chrysler was being mandated to fix these very poorly made vehicles. i would like to know how this particular vehicle does not fall into the other recalls when it has been having the same issues. i have been having breaking system issues as long back as 13 months after i purchased this vehicle.

Transmission broke! every owner of a 2005 or 2006 jeep liberty diesel that i have spoken with, has had to rebuild or replace their transmission.the manufacture had a recall to tune down engine to help prevent problem,i had this done, but this is only a temp fix,(a band-aid). the real problem is a weak link in the tranny,(the torque converter). when the torque converter fails it destroys the transmission.. which is what just happened to me. my jeep is 8 years old, but i only had 68,000 miles on it. the reason i purchased this vehicle was for the long service life of the 2.8l diesel (300,000 plus miles before rebuild). i live in a somewhat rural area and i have spoke with over 12 people who has experienced this same problem with there 2.8l diesel transmission #545rfe. i know this is a nationwide problem,i have gone online and spoken with alot of liberty owners and all have had transmission problems,i have also spoke with many former liberty owners who said they would never drive another jeep, because lack of dealer concerns over transmission problems..they had! i am correcting the problem by replacing the damaged stock transmission, with a highly recommended aftermarket one made for the torque of a diesel engine.. i feel consumers should not half to endure that large out of pocket expense,to repair a manufacturer problem! thank-you *tr
Could not remove key from ignition. mechanic discovered cable from shifter to ignition broken. mechanic also discovered piece within shifter broken that allowed shifter to move in and out of park without depressing brake. *js
Key will not release from ignition on steering column due to restricted (degraded range of motion from a subassembly with weakened spring) movement of automatic transmission shifter interlock cable. vehicle can not be put in park (shifter freely moves through p r n d 3 2) and key will not make the last little turn before release. seems to be an extremely common occurrence among owners, based on cursory online research. requires replacement of entire center console shifter assembly with an "upgraded/improved" mopar part to fix the known high failure subassembly (but not available for purchase separately). inability to place vehicle securely in park would seem to be biggest safety issue, not to mention vehicle security compromised with key perpetually in ignition. *js ..updated 02-10-15 *bf updated 8/28/2017*cn
The vehicle shift assembly for these model of jeeps fails to operate correctly. the cable will not set in the proper position when shifted back into park, disabling the owner's ability to remove their key from the ignition. the only solution is to remove the cover covering the shift assembly and forcefully push the cable into place to release the key. in addition to this, the shift handle can be bumped and shifted into gears, or into reverse or park, without the brake being pushed as would normally operate the assembly. this causes the risk of accidentally bumping the vehicle into a gear that could cause an accident and risk the driver's life. *tr
I put my car into 4wd for a minute and came to a complete stop and took it completely out of 4wd. it stayed stuck in 4wd and after burning up my engine it broke my front passenger side axle and now i have to pay $800 for repairs. i have never used my 4wd and we are stuck in a snowstorm in the mountain close to portland, oregon and i cant get anywhere. *tr
Car will not blow out cold air but works for a moment then just hot air. thought it needed freon but i am being told new compressor is required $700.00. i spoke to another mechanic who thought the clutch part is the real issue. the car is garage kept and well maintained. replacing clutch first. i have seen several similar complaints online too. windows 3 of 4 have dropped. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. the contact stated that the instrument panel lights would flicker on and off sporadically. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 53,000. .... updated 02-20-13 *bf the consumer stated the dealer would only see the vehicle while the light while were on but, the lights flickered intermittently. this is just one of many failures the consumer has had since the purchase of the vehicle. the seat belt, hood, steering box, and clutch have all had failures as well. updated 02/25/2013 *js
Vehicle stalled, engine shut off when backing out of driveway. the stall point of the transmission is exceed, making transition from reverse to drive or drive to reverse too much, causing a stall. also, idle in drive when stopped there are surges that cause a near stall. this is a safety issue, as it can happen when making 2-point or 3-point turns on a road with traffic. *tr
On three separate occasions vehicle stalls upon engaging drive or reverse from park or neutral. the shift is made, the vehicle begins to move, then suddenly it stalls, the engine shuts off. park or neutral must be quickly reselected to restart vehicle. danger of being in an intersection when this happens it high. dealer says it is a known issue, with no solution. *tr
Gear shifter stuck in park, key stuck in ignition. shifter had to be replaced.$431. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty 4x4. the contact stated that vehicle would surge forward when shifting into any gear and the vehicle would also loose power abnormally. the egr (exhaust gas recirculation) valve melted, causing a burning smell to release into the vehicle. in addition, the gear shifter would shift out of park independently, causing the vehicle to roll away. the contact also stated that the rear passenger side door handle became defective, making it impossible to open the vehicle door from the interior of the vehicle and the abs, esp and traction control lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failures. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 101,000. ....updated 06/18/12 *bf the consumer also stated there was a problem with the control arm on the vehicle and because of the widespread problem a recall as issued. the consumer was then informed the recall was old, and her vin was not included. the vehicle would loose power suddenly after driving forward, the windows would make a dragging noise, even though the dealer replace, the wheel speed sensor was replaced, the interior door handle on the passenger side was inoperative. the check engine light illuminated several times. updated 06/22/12 updated 6/25/12 *cn updated 06/29/12

Ac compressor had to be replaced i did not know there was a recall on it.. also the computer went on it and that was repaired on 10/11/13... i was told the spark plugs were wrong. i have never had a tune up or my spark plugs changed! unless the wrong ones were in there when i bought this brand new in september of 2006. or possibly the chrysler dealership did it to get a repair. safford in springfield va. i will not stop perusing this until i have answers. Key was stuck in ignition of 2006 jeep liberty limited edition. also noticed the shifter was moving freely, without having to be pushed in like it typically would. took to jeep dealership & was told that entire shifter column needed to be replaced because it is plastic & brakes easily - cost $200.00. have heard that this is a common occurrence. *tr
Vehicles stalls after extended off period. vehicle shudders under normal driving conditions. chrysler has 2 tsbs to fix this- 21-016-05 and 21-009-06 which calls for replacing a trouble prone torque converter. chrysler has an updated torque converter to fix this problem yet will not take action to fix the vehicle even after numerous attempts since 2006 to get transmission fixed properly. i would like this looked into as myself and numerous other owners of the 2005-2006 jeep liberty with the diesel engine experience the same issue. the truck has stalled after starting on several occasions causing concern for action since i have had my pregnant wife witness this. please look into this. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. the contact stated that a rattling noise emitted from the engine compartment when the vehicle was shifted into park or neutral. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance since the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 49,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 jeep liberty sport. while driving 35 mph, the vehicle lost power, the transmission light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the torque converter was defective. a transmission specialist stated that the transmission fluid did not circulate through the seals. the vehicle had not been repaired. the contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. the current and failure mileages were approximately 86,000.
Hard to get 4-wheel drive in gear. i had service tech. talk me thru since it wasn't working properly. 4-wheel drive lever/gear broke completely on feb. 3, 2014. *tr
2006 jeep liberty will not shift out of park intermittently. after several attempts of applying service brake it comes out so far. dealership wants $600 bucks to replace shift lever tower and shift cable. others on line talk about same problem. dealerships plead ignorance on the problem, but will gladly take $600 to replace the shift lever tower and ! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty 4x4. the vehicle was parked when it suddenly began to roll down the street, jump the curb and crashed into a tree. there were no injuries and no police report. the contact notified the insurance company but had not spoken with the manufacturer at the time of the complaint. the current and failure mileages were 76,250.
The ignition key was stuck in the ignition and the brake park interlock mechanism was not working. i was able to move the shifter through it's entire range without pressing the lock button on the shifter knob. this is a safety hazard since without these safety mechanisms operating correctly the shifter can be accidentally knocked onto drive. the weak link is a plastic push rod in the shifter mechanism that is not strong enough for the job. many chrysler shifters will fail in this manner. *tr
While driving on the highway, the engine sputtered and died. the repair estimate indicated that a valve spring broke inside the #5 cylinder, caused by a jump in timing. this repair/problem is directly linked to a jeep/chrysler technical bulletin. *tr
2006 jeep liberty limited with 2.7l cr diesel engine. transmission "hunts" for a gear while driving 50-to-60 mph, frequently up- and down-shifting. problem is intermittent. have reported problem to dealer but they find no problem. *tr
I have had my 2006 jeep liberty at the dealership 6 times in the 3 years i've owned it. i bought this car brand new and have had nothing but problems since. first the car would not come out of park, at the dealership they couldn't duplicate the problem and sent me on my way. after may months of this happening daily i had it towed on a flat bed to the dealership and they finally replaced a cable that connected the gear shift to brake after telling me i could just slam really hard on the brake and it would just disengage, i should just have done that instead of having it towed. (stupid me i guess) then i had the same abs traction check engine light problems i've heard and read many complaints about, first time taking it in, the problems stopped and they sent me home. second time, i drove it straight there and made them look at it and drive it, they had my car for four days and call me to tell me there was nothing they could do because the codes were stored and not active reset the computer and sent me on my way. now yesterday a year later and at 48,000 miles the car started again. i made them hook it up while the car was still running and the lights still on. what they don't tell you is that shutting your car off "stores" the codes. with the car still on, the codes were active and they found the problem. the body control module. however now it is out of factory warranty and i had to fight with the gm to get it covered. they still wouldn't cover it under factory but did cover it under extended warranty and waived my deductible. however i am still very upset that this has not been recalled, this should not be at my expense at all!!! i will never buy another jeep ever! *tr
Clutch safety switch on 2006 jeep liberty (3.7 l gas engine) failed after 40 k. ironically, this requires replacement of the entire master cylinder (cost $375). would ignore problem, but this also deactivates the cruise control. silly design in that a simple switch failure requires hydraulic system work. *tr
H. this car has required engine oil to be added every 50 to 100 miles without any evident smell or sight of leaking oil, also torque converter needed replacement experienced deceleration of speed while driving at 50 mph.
Numerous mechanical problems all dash lights come on at once between 15 - 50 mph dealer replaced body control module lights still come on now has more problems after repair by dealer. several recalls on this leased vehicle running up miles back 2 dealer rear window fall down repaired motor tried 2 quit 3 times could be dangerous in traffic seems it loses prime on fuel system . also excessive tire wear on front tires had it aligned myself was out from factory 10 deg. i have no confidence in dealer 2 fix since i have more problems after last visit. horn doesn't sound on key pad door lock and fog lights stay on at highbeam after electrical work. vehicle has locked me out when i shut doors 4 no apparent reason switch keys in ignition and motor running. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. while the vehicle was parked in the driveway in first gear, it rolled backwards. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, but they could not determine the cause of the failure. recently, the vehicle was parked in first gear and with the emergency brake engaged. the vehicle rolled away again and crashed into a tree. the vehicle was still able to be driven and sustained moderate damages. the police was called to the scene and a report was filed. the vehicle will be taken to a collision center for repairs. the vin and failure mileage were unknown. the current mileage was 24,010.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. while turning the vehicle in any direction at low speeds, the vehicle would began to shake and the transmission would shift from first gear into neutral. the contact did not notice any differences in the vehicle prior to the failure. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. the current mileage was 35,600 and failure mileage was 32,000.
My 21 year old daughter was driving my 2006 liberty on the northern parkway in westbury, ny on january 2, 2008. the car was purchased in july 2006 and has approximately 15,500 miles on it. suddenly and without warning the wheels locked up ripping out the transfer case and dropping the drive shaft on the highway. the car behind her was damaged as it ran over the drive train components. the driver of the damaged car saw flames coming out from under the liberty and a cloud of black smoke. (probably from the gear oil). fortunately the liberty veered into the breakdown lane and not into another travel. no one was injured. the liberty was towed to westbury jeep. initially i met with the service manager and he indicated the repairs would be made under warranty. after 12 days he phone me and said ...either the car hit something or it was driven in 4wd low on the highway. neither of these occurred and jeep does not acknowledge a problem with vehicle and will not cover the repairs under warranty. i phoned chrysler and they won?t even send a rep to look at the vehicle. chrysler contacted the dealer and repeated what the dealer said. the chrysler service rep would not provide another contact saying she was trained to handle these situations. she also said there are no tsbs or recalls for my liberty which apply. i am frustrated and stonewalled by both the westbury jeep and chrysler. *tr
