Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2006 Jeep Liberty

Hi, i have owned this jeep liberty since 2008 and bought it with 2700 miles on it. the problem i have and many others have is with the filler neck on the fuel tank. it overflows gas every time you fill. even if i slow it at the approx time the meter says it should be getting full. the internet research shows that the new gas tank assembly from jeep has a new/fixed safety valve in the filler neck that is supposed to help with a rollover accident but apparently slaps shut when filling causing the gas puke on clothes, shoes, ground, etc. it is not good for the environment, pocket book, or other people at the gas station as spilled gas is a significant safety concern. it is a chronic failure and jeep should do something. sell part at loss/severe discount, replace for free would be nice, acknowledge the problem is a big issue and stand up and fix it even though it is not the classic, "this causes accidents and we better do something so we don't get sued" type of safety recall. thanks in advance for the help. *tr

When filling the gas tank, gas will squirt out before the nozzle can shut off. there appears to be a defect with the gas tank that causes air to not vent properly during the filling process. this air builds up pressure until it pushes gas back out the filler tube potentially onto the person filling the tank, down the outside of the vehicle and onto the ground. not only a safety issue but an environmental one that many others have also reported. *tr

2006 jeep liberty gas spill when fueling. *tr

On each fill up, gasoline shoots out of the nozzle receptor. this occurs with the operator holding the handle in or with the latch pushed down to hold the handle down. approximately a quarter cup of fuel shoots out of the tank upon overfill. i have called several dealers and the dealer insists the tank has been compromised by "ethanol based" fuels. i have never filled up with anything but 87 octane. the dealer wants me to pay $5000 for a new gas tank. this occurs at every gas station and i have tried to fill the tank on the slowest setting. neither method helps the overfilling. this is not only a safety concern for me, but an environmental hazard. *tr

2006 jeep liberty sport fuel overflows out of fuel filler tube when filling gas tank no matter how slowly the tank is filled. the automatic shut-off at service station pumps does not sense the back pressure of the fill tube for these vehicles. this happens every time when refueling vehicle at any service station. each occurrence causes spillage of fuel (approximately 6-12 ounces) on exterior painted surface of vehicle, on person filling vehicle and onto pavement creating not only cumulative damage to vehicle exterior but fire and environmental hazards as well. internet research concerning this issue with jeep vehicles shows this to be a widespread problem across the united states and corrective actions are very rarely addressed by the manufacturer and then only if vehicle is within warranty. obviously there is a defect in either the vehicle fuel fill tube, fuel tank or both. it appears chrysler corporation has been aware of this defect for quite some time, but has yet to recall these vehicles for the problem. *tr

Both rear regulators have quit working, leaving my jeep and myself vulnerable to others being able to easily enter the vehicle. we have replaced one and will be replacing the other next week due to the cost. as if that wasn't enough, the sun roof just quit working and stuck partially open. i hardly ever use it, so it did not break due to use. we took it into the dealership and it will cost $1300.00 dollars to repair, which we cannot afford. also, fuel quite often overflows when fueling, spilling gasoline down the side of my jeep as well as spraying out onto the person fueling. it does not matter how slowly we put the gasoline in, it still overflows. *tr

Gas spills out of tank every time i fill up. refer to following thread for details and videos. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/have-fuel-spill-problems-like-many-us-submit-complaint-force-recall-974337/. *tr

2006 jeep liberty sport (3.7l gas), spills fuel at every fill up. the pump will click off, and about two seconds later, about a cup of fuel will spill out of the filler tube all over my hands, clothes, and vehicle. jeep dealer said they've not heard of the problem, even though with 5 minutes of research online, it's very common. this has been a problem since i purchased it as a certified jeep vehicle with 32,xxx miles. *tr

I have a 2006 jeep liberty that spews gas as it gets full. it has shot out as much as 3-4 cups worth at its worst. this happens every time it is a huge safety problem considering the amount of gas that is spilled each time.i have been told that it is a faulty venting mechanism in the gas tank and several others have the same issue on jeeps and dodges. i made mention of it at the dealership each time i have had it into the dealership. they never even looked into it. they told me that it must be the gas pump i am using. i have had it happen at gas stations in 8 states now. i am sure it is not the gas pumps. now that it is out of warranty, i am told that they could replace the gas tank at my expense. since the vehicle is so new and only has 40,000 miles on it that this should be considered their responsibility it is a safety issue though. *tr *dt

When filling the gas tank to full with the pump nozzle set to automatic, the tank spits out 1/2 to 1 gallon of gas before the nozzle disengages. this is not a problem with the gas pump. the same pump was used on other cars without incident. this happens on this jeep liberty regardless of what pump is used. on occasions, this excess fuel has gotten onto my clothes which poses a safety hazard. i've investigated this on the internet and many jeep owners are having this problem. i no longer use the automatic nozzle setting but this is unsatisfactory because others filling the tank on my behalf may not be aware of this. some areas of the country don't allow the use of self-service pumps. *tr

Gas spews dramatically out of the gas tank when filling. a friend of mine has the same vehicle and his does the same thing. we cannot fill our tanks full, regardless of the filling station. we estimate that 1-2 cups of gasoline spew out onto the side of the jeep. it spews far enough to saturate clothing of the person filling up the tank. my wife's hairdresser reports the same problem with her 2006 jeep liberty. *cn

This is an incident - when fueling the gas tank with the nozzle inside the gas tank opening, the fuel gushes out of the opening after the tank is full, spilling gas on the vehicle and on the ground. this is not at one gas pump, it happens at any gas station i go to. this results in a potential fire hazard and damage to the paint on the vehicle. each gas pump has an automatic vacuum shut off when the gas reaches the nozzle and is supposed to shut off the supply of gas. for some reason, the jeep liberty gushes out gas all over the place every time i fuel it. this has been a recurring event and the only reason why i have not reported it is because i did not know that this reporting mechanism was available and i was only putting in a limited amount of gas to prevent the gushing from happening. is this peculiar to just my vehicle or have others had this experience as well??? *tr

The gas tank won't shut off when filling gas, and gas spews out everywhere on the ground. there seemed to be no remedy for this except to change the gas tank which i had a dealership do... it works fine now. *tr

Gas tank overflows every time when attempt to fill tank full. dealer says problem can't be fixed and tank must be replaced. not covered by warranty and cost is over $1500 to replace. this seems like a safety issue they should take care of.

2006 jeep liberty sport fuel overflows out of fuel filler tube when filling gas tank no matter how slowly the tank is filled. *tr

When filling the gas tank, the fuel delivery system fails to stop delivering fuel after tank is full; thus resulting in fuel overflowing the tank and onto the car exterior, ground, etc. this occurs regardless of the speed at which the fuel is delivered into the tank. this has occurred throughout our ownership of this jeep, and the incident date represent the approx. date of purchase. this same issue was occurring in the 2008 jeep wranglers (of which i own one) and was subject to a recall. upon the recall repair (new tank, etc), the problem was solved. prior to the 2006 jeep liberty, we owned a 2003 jeep liberty, which did not have that issue. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a used 2006 jeep liberty which was purchased in 2008. he stated that when adding gasoline, the fuel pump would not shut-off and the gasoline fuel would overflow from tank. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the "flapper" had failed. there were no repairs made to the vehicle. there were also no recall campaigns for the failure. the failure and current mileages were 75,000. 06/28/10*jb

When ever jeep is fueled up , fuel gushes out of filler neck when nozzle shuts off ,slow or fast, it makes a mess on jeep and on the ground. big fire hazard.

When filling the gas tank pressure builds in the tank and forces the gas back out under pressure creating a spray the covers the person filling the tank, and side of the vehicle. this is caused by a broken / clogged fuel tank vent. this occurs everytime you fill the tank. trying to fill the tank at a low fill rate doesn't improve the situation. *tr

Hello, i bought a 2006 jeep cherokee sport in romania kj / le85 (the liberty 4x4 jeep for europe), from casa auto romania: / 7 february 2007. my technical problems with this car, still in warranty (2 years warranty in romania) are: -the esp/bas warning lamp comes on continuously with engine running, the light remains on at speeds greater than 30mps. first, this problem was randomly appearing, but now it appears each time i am driving on highway with speeds greater than 30 miles/h . -2 times my engine lost power for no reason; -the fuel consumption urban: ca 17 l / 100 km; -the fuel consumption extra urban: ca 12 / /100 km. my car is for the second time in the service in the last 6 weeks for the same problem ? electronic stability control, the primary safety system of this vehicle. first time, after 3 weeks they said they fixed the problem. i brought it back next day with the same problem. my car is still in service. my great problem is that my authorized dealer is unable or don't want to fix these problems, waiting to expire the warranty of my car ? in few days. they don?t want to offer warranty for the pieces they replaced, they say the warranty of this pieces replaced expires with the warranty of the car. i'm afraid this problem is unsolvable for chrysler llc, and my car is an unsafe car. also, i want you to help me with the serial number of the components of my car: wind screen, battery, pistons,?. i found this links on internet with 2006 liberty jeep owners with the same unsolvable problem. http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=6836&sid=9f0a35885eee4cb496bf50e84284d105 http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=10382 http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/?f=8. *tr

2006 jeep liberty - gas tank fueling issue. when filling the vehicle with gasoline at the service station the fuel pump will not shut-off and gasoline overflows from tank. multiple gas stations tried, problem exists at all fuel pumps. potential personal injury or fire hazard with gasoline overflowing from tank. jeep chyrsler dealership cannot resolve the problem after 5 visits to dealership. dealership acknowledges problem and has had jeep chyrsler engineering has been involved with no resolution to the problem. potential personal injury or fire hazard with gas overflowing from tank. first reported to jeep chyrsler in dec 2008 and problem still exists. dealer has replaced gas tank 3 times and new gas tanks do not fill properly. jeep chrysler indicates that design change has occurred on replacement tanks not compatible with 2006 vehicle. faulty gasoline tank currently installed on vehicle. *tr

Fuel system nozzle allows fuel to be expelled after pump autoshutoff engages causing fuel to spill on vehicle and onto pavement. *tr

There is a slight fuel system leak that allows an air pocket to build in the fuel filter housing. when this air pocket gets drawn into the injector pump, the engine begins running badly, causing immediate loss of power. this has occurred multiple times, the first time the dealer could not duplicate the problem, so there was no point in returning to waste my time after that. i know how to temporarily fix the problem now that i have read so many other owners have experienced the same thing, as noted in the lost internet forum. the latest occurrence happened at 65 mph passing on the freeway, and i nearly caused an accident trying to maneuver off the road when i lost power. *tr

This incident started in 2008 and at the time thought it was a failure of the gas pump at the gas station but now the problem is more common and happens weekly, recently splashing gasoline into my eyes which required fluid eye rinse and medical attention. every time i fill up the tank on my 2006 jeep liberty, the gas begins to overflow and splashes back, out of the fuel inlet opening. this in turn sprays fuel out at a force, and then onto the ground. recently this happened and sprayed fuel into my eyes, on onto my clothes. not only is this a safety issue, but also a major fire hazard. it is my understanding after talking with the dealer that this is a known problem with jeep liberty's in that the fuel tank's inlet check valve is faulty which in turn fails to automatically shut off the gas station fuel pump in time. this is my formal complaint that i was injured due to a known, faulty part/component of the jeep liberty. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. the contact stated that when refueling, fuel would overflow and spew from the filler neck. the fuel tank could not be filled to capacity and the failure was a frequent occurrence. the dealer was contacted and a claim was filed. the vehicle was neither diagnosed nor repaired. the failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 103,000.

Fuel is expelled when filling gas tank, which splashes on vehicle and person filling the tank. gasoline fumes are very strong inside vehicle after filling tank, and requires windows to be open for considerable amount of time to relieve overly strong smell. *tr

Fuel heater leak in a 2006 jeep liberty crd, common rail diesel, possible cause of an injection pump failure. *ak

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. the contact was driving approximately 25 mph coming to a complete stop with the front driver side window in the downward position. the contact attempted to activate the window mechanism. however, the window failed to operate upwardly. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on two separate occasions for the identical failure. the vehicle was repaired under the service warranty. the repair part was unknown. also, the front passenger side window would not function in an upward position. in addition, when dispensing fuel into the fuel tank to the full capacity level; the fuel would continuously spray out of the tank without shutting off. the fuel tank was replaced at the dealer. the failure mileage was 8,000. updated 8/2/10 *cn updated 08/09/10*jb

Whenever i fill up the gas tank with gas the filler tube over flows with gas and does not allow the fuel pump to cut off automatically. this has happened since the vehicle was new. gas gushes out of the filler tube and down the side of the vehicle and creates a large pool of gasoline on the ground. this action can be easily repeated. one must stop the fuel pump before the tank is full and not allow the pump to cut off automatically. *tr

I have had multiple problems related to the back lights on my 2006 jeep liberty renegade 4x4 vehicle. i purchased the car new with no miles on it. recently, the gas pump was leaking and a valve was installed to stop the oil from leaking. the back light rack had to be replaced twice in two months. the back lights have gone out numerous of times. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the brakes failed five times at low speeds. there was an accident causing minor damage to another vehicle. the dealer could not duplicate the problem. also, the check engine light illuminated. the dealer replaced the heater control head however that did not fix the problem. the fuel pump also runs constantly and the manufacturer has been alerted.
