FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM 1

Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2006 Jeep Liberty

Fuel spews out of the fuel filler opening after the gas pump shuts off causing fuel to spill on to the vehicle body (both painted and plastic areas), on the ground, and on the person filling the jeep. this condition has existed for a year before filling this complaint. apparently this is a wide spread issue across all jeep lines. the only fix available is complete replacement of the fuel tank (estimated $1700.00) at the owners expense. model 2007 and up jeep liberty's have a recall for this issue, but not my 2006 per my local dealer. *tr

When filling up my gas tank, the fuel will spit back out. this happens at the beginning, middle, or end of when i'm fueling up. it's more like a geyser of fuel spilling back at me that gets all over me, the car, and most dangerously, all over the ground of the gas station. it happens nearly every time i fill up. it doesn't matter what gas station i am at, or how i'm positioning the hose. this has been happening for over a year, but has gotten increasingly worse recently. very dangerous, frightening, and bad for the environment. *tr

The gas tank spews out fuel when you let it fill. *tr

when i want to refill the fuel tank the fuel squirts out the fill hole before the nozzle shuts off. it's been doing that since i bought the car a couple years ago.i was told the only way to fix the problem was to replace the fuel tank. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. the contact stated that while refueling, fuel overflowed and spewed from the filler neck. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 48,000 and the current mileage was 54,773. *tr

Fuel tank inlet check valve not stopping gas from surging out of the tank and all over the ground/person/car. this occurs even after the gas pump as 'clicked off' and is not filling the tank. chrysler as extended the warranty on model year 2007 & 2008 jeep libery's, but this is a 2006 with the same problem. *tr

Whenever the vehicle is filled with fuel, when the automatic shutoff occurs, fuel flows back out of the fuel tank onto the vehicle and the ground! *tr

The fuel tank began to have a problem with overflowing when refueling. it is nearly impossible to fill the tank without gas pouring out of the vehicle. i am concerned about the potential fire hazard. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. the contact stated that when refueling, fuel would spill out of the filler neck. the contact indicated that on multiple occasions fuel spilled onto their clothing. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the fuel tank was defective. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 78,000.

This was the first time that we had filled the tank up on our 2006 jeep liberty since we purchased it on may 29,2012. while standing at the pump waiting for the tank to fill up, the tank started overflowing with gas. i had gas all over me, the car, and the ground. i wrote it off as being a problem with the pump. two weeks later i go to a different pump to fill it up, and it happens again. so i called the dealership that we bought the vehicle from and explained the problem and we took it in for them to look at. they replaced a canister and leak protection guard, which did not fix the problem. i started looking on jeep forums and have found quite a few instances of this same problem on the jeep liberty and these people have also filed claims to the nhsta. the only way for the problem to be fixed is for the tank to be replaced because there is a check valve in the tank that is causing this. this is a very costly repair as i have called a couple of dealerships around in the are with the tank alone costing over $1,400 dollars. *jb

Check valve in fuel tank not operating correctly. during fill-up, the gas tank overflows onto the ground every time. i have seen many others complain about this issue in online forums. with gas always spilling over, i would assume that this is a very hazardous situation. *tr

When i put gas in my jeep it burps gas out. this has been happening since i bought the jeep in 2012. i've looked online and this has been happening to other people with other jeeps owners. i called chrysler and they told be that it was not a recall on my jeep model. *tr

When filling the gas tank, i let the pump shut off by itself. when the pump shuts off, a few ounces of gasoline spill on the ground. this happens consistently. *tr

When filling the gas tank, the gas pump clicks like the tank is full then it starts overflowing. *tr

First - my vehicle is under recall and has been for 6 months and jeep does not have parts available - under rear end crash a fire can happen from gas tank - jeep supposed to put a hitch on vehicle however does not have the parts. they cannot give me a date of when those parts might be available. secondly, my gas tank spills over whenever it is filled at gas station.....i was told there was a valve problem that would mean a gas tank replacement at my own cost. this is what i was told in 1-11-2012. *tr

My original intent was to file a complaint about a gas overflow issue, but after seeing all the other liberty complaints, i have included other issues i have: 1. for at least two years, when pumping gas, the gas has continued to flow even after the automatic flow has shut off. i now stand at the pump and when i think it is getting full, i start pumping by hand to avoid the overflow. after checking on the internet, this is an issue other liberty owners experience. i did receive the initial recall notice for 13v-252, but nothing since to say the part is in. since the gas overflow is experienced by many owners, is this part of the recall? 2. check engine light is always on. it has been re-set many times; is ok for a day or two and then re-appears. per owner's manual, this is not an issue unless the light is flashing, which it is not, but why does this continue to occur? 3. both back electric windows have fallen down without warning. both are now secured in place with tape, as it would be too expensive to repair. 4. the back left door will not open from the inside. *tr

Gas overflows every time i fill up. i have not caught on fire yet, but i worry for me and my children. *tr

I purchased a used jeep in wisconsin that does not follow nhtsa or epa standards. the jeep overflows when filling the gas tank and spills gas on the ground at every gas station. this is a common issue with jeeps and needs to be recalled. it often requires replacement of the fuel tank or lines. my car is not under warranty since it was purchased used. i am extremely concerned of fire, pollution and my wife's safety with this hazardous issue. *kb

When filling up the tank at the gas station the tank has overflowed quite a bit of gasoline onto the ground as the pump stops. this has happened on several different occasions at several different filling stations. *tr

My liberty started having fuel spill problems about a month ago. now, every time i fill the tank, the pump doesn't 'click off' fast enough and there is an overflow (~1/4 gallon) of gasoline. this has happened at every gas station i've tried lately. *tr

When filling the vehicle with gas, the pump's handle will suddenly and forcibly stop (as though the tank were full) and gasoline will spit out of the fuel opening, despite the fact it is gallons away from being filled to full capacity. this happens with every different gas station's pump handles, so to be clear, it is not an issue with the pump or handle, or the individual's ability to pump gas correctly; it is an issue with the gas line of this vehicle and the indicator or regulator or whatever part is defective. this is the exact same issue we had with our 2008 wrangler sahara unlimited, for which a recall was issued in 2013 for a defective gas line collar. once the recall was remediated the problem stopped. so i called jeep today to discuss why a recall had not been issued for our liberty since it has the same problem. the answer i received led me to believe that not enough complaints had been received by your office; so i am filing a complaint with you today so that you can investigate the need for a recall for this issue on the jeep liberty model. my daughter-in-law owns this vehicle and allows me to drive it, so i am filing this complaint to bring this issue to your attention on her behalf, and whose information appears in section 3, below. thank you for your attention to this serious issue. *tr

After viewing some recommendations online about jeep liberty crd vehicle fires i decided to check the component listed as having possible issues on my vehicle. the electrical connection for the fuel heater located on the fuel filter assembly was in fact scorched and soaked through with diesel. a fire has not occurred, however i am seriously concerned that it could and that there is not a mandatory recall on this product. i have left the connection unplugged but winter is coming and i live in an area where that heater is necessary. *tr

Gas spits out of fuel tank when full does not auto stop. (faulty sensor)i try not to fill tank all the way. *tr

My 2006 jeep liberty has a defective gas tank. when filling the tank completely full, the fuel pump nozzle will shut off only to have gasoline come pouring out of the tank onto me, my clothes, the outside of the vehicle, and all over the ground. after investigating the problem, it turns out i'm not the only one with this problem. jeep should be held responsible for installing gas tanks that are deemed to fail. the cost of this gas tank alone, quoted by the dealership is $1400.00, and the filler line is an additional $300.00. this is ridiculous. engine problems are one thing, parts due wear over time and this is understandable. but to have a gas tank that is potentially dangerous by spewing gasoline at consumers and being an environmental hazard is not acceptable. and chrysler/dodge/jeep not taking responsibility for their faulty manufacturing is not acceptable. and lets not forget that the government spent millions of dollars to bale them out, which turns out to be taxpayers money, our money, and they won't stand by their products. shame on you!! looks like i'll be purchasing a toyota fj cruiser instead of an american made classic in the future. thanks for nothing jeep

Last year around aug 2011 my key stuck in the key slot couldn't even get it out had after a while figured out if u push the brake all the way in then put in park then sometimes the key would come out started workin after about 2 to 3months later then on feb 27 12 it started 2 stick again then it wouldn't start we called chrysler. they told us 2 have it hauled 2 some where 2 have it checked its at lee auto in aurbon maine they we are now paying 200$ and they have not figured out what it is -chrysler, gave us a case num [xxx] and they told my husband if it is a faulty part they might help pay for it. its has only 72000 2 74000 miles on it we had 2 put a new fuel pump in it already in 2011-i think we got the lemon right now i have 2 really on some one 2 give me a ride 2 work oya we all so went through a set of tire 1 year after alignment. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*tr

Upon filling gas tank with fuel, the shutoff engages too late, and gasoline pours out down the side of the vehicle onto the ground. this does not matter which gas station is utilized, but happens whenever reaching a full tank, even when care is taken not to engage the spout at its maximum capacity. this is an ongoing issue, since i purchased the car last september, and so the following "approximate incident date" should be - ongoing. *tr

Every time i try to fill the gas tank, it overflows. it doesn't matter what station or pump. if i use the automatic lever on the pump, the gas comes squirting out all over my car, my shoes, and the ground. even if i don't use the lever, and squeeze the pump handle myself, the pump still does not shut off before overflowing. it is a problem with the car, not the gas pump or the operator.

2006 jeep liberty fuel overflow hazard. when refueling our 2006 jeep liberty, fuel overflows after fuel pump automatic shutoff is triggered. this overflow now occurs every time vehicle is refueled. no one is attempting to "top off" the fuel tank. the overflow causes a quantity of fuel, that i estimate at two to four cups, to spill on the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. this fuel overflow flaw creates an extreme fire hazard and environmental contamination risk. this flaw occurs in the wrangler model of chrysler jeep products also, where a recall has been issued. the same flaw is occurring in many thousands of jeep liberty's as is evident by the huge volume of owner statements posted on many websites. go chrysler jeep in englewood, co quoted a repair cost of $2031.00 to fix the problem. when the overflow flaw first occurred in my jeep liberty, it was an occasional problem that was impossible to predict and without a recall notice, consumers are unaware of this hazard. this flaw creates a safety hazard for the person refueling the vehicle and anyone nearby. the fuel spilled has caused property damage in the form of ruined clothing and shoes, and possibly damage to the vehicle as fuel runs down the side into crevices around the rear wheel and axle. this spilled fuel could reach the hot exhaust pipe and explode. why would the manufacturer cover this flaw under warranty for one make and model, the jeep wrangler, and not cover the identical problem for another make and model, the jeep liberty? it's the same problem created by the same manufacturer. *tr

2006 jeep liberty gas shut off valve does not engage and gas overflows upon filling up gas tank. has happened everytime i fill up the gas tank over the past 4 months. *tr

While filling tank with fuel, fuel spills out onto exterior of car. fuel does not stop, until overfull. this has happened on multiple occasions, and at various filling stations. *tr

Every time i fill up with gas (regardless of station / how i hold nozzle / speed at which i refuel / etc), the tank overflows with a lot of gas all over the vehicle and the ground and sometimes on me. then the interior of the vehicle stinks of fumes for a long time afterward. this has been going on for almost as i've had the vehicle but it getting worse over the past year. *tr

Everytime i fill up my gas tank on my 06 liberty it over flows. *tr

Gas tank overflows when fueling because it doesn't sense when its full. i have to stop fueling before i think its full so this doesn't happen, so i am unable to fill tank completely. spills all over my clothes, on the ground and down the side of my vehicle. also i smell an electrical burning smell when i'm driving my vehicle sometimes which is very scary. *tr

The jeep liberty has regularly "spit" out quantities of gasoline while filling up at gas stations. the quantities range from 1 to 8 ounces, with the quantity that poured out today the largest amount yet. the quantities vary by how fast the pump is pumping and whether the pump is hand operated or on automatic but some quantity of gas comes out almost every time. the spill today left at least 4 to 6 ounces of gasoline on the ground which is both an environmental and safety hazard.

When fueling the tank the gasoline pump will not turn off when the tank gets full causing a significant amount of gasoline to spill down the side of the vehicle and onto the ground as well as splashing all over the handle and the person holding the handle. this happens every time the tank is filled regardless of weather or location. *tr

When filling fuel tank, gas overflows out the filler tube. it does this know matter how you fill the tank_man. or auto. *kb

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. the contact stated when refueling the vehicle, fuel spilled on him and the vehicle. the dealer was notified and stated there were no recalls. the manufacturer also confirmed there were no recalls and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 78,000 and the current mileage was 98,000.

For the last 2 months every time i fill up my jeep liberty 2006 gas spills out. this is frustrating especially with the price of gas. i estimate that i lose at least a gallon each time. when i first got the jeep i noticed that you could not "top off" the gas which each fill. but now it just spills out all over. help!! *tr

Every time i fill up my vehicle at a gas station gas comes pouring out after the tank is full. the gas nozzle clicks off and gas begins to pour out all over the side of the vehicle and the ground. i have tried manually pumping as well as automatically pumping with the same results. i have attempted filling at multiple gas stations with the same outcome. this did not occur the first year that i owned my car, and only began in the past couple months. this is a hazard to the environment and a potential danger for a fire. *tr

I have a 2006 jeep liberty limited 4x4 with a 3.7l v6 engine that overflows gas out of the filler neck when refueling no matter how fast the flow of gas is flowing. vehicle has about 66,000 miles and has only started happening in the last 3,000 miles or so. *tr

Fuel system nozzle allows fuel to be expelled after pump auto shutoff engages causing fuel to spill on vehicle and onto pavement. *tr

Since i bought my 2006 in november of 2010 i cannot fill the gas tank w/o it overflowing.....the sensor that senses it's full is defective.......me and about a zillion other liberty owners.this is a dangerous defect!.....i have owned 5 jeeps and this would cause me to reconsider another one. *tr

Gas overflows when filling tank. *tr

2006 jeep liberty overflows when filling with gas. gas sprays out with significant force. had the same problem with a 2006 durnago and the entire fuel tank and fill neck needed replaced. 2005 models were recalled, nothing on 2006 yet. *tr

2006 jeep liberty made in may 06. this model is similar to the 07. gas tank filling to full, gasoline shoots out the gas inlet with much back pressure. it has been doing this consistently for the last couple of months since i bought the car. it makes no difference what station i go to, or how fast the gasoline is flowing. *tr

2006 jeep liberty sport, overflows when filling up gas tank, most of the time. *tr

Suddenly started over-flowing gas out the filler tube upon filling. has happened with multiple filling stations for about the last 6 or 8 fillings. never happened prior to that. there have been no modifications, damage, or changes in the fuel system of the vehicle.

2006 jeep liberty sport overflows from the gas tank when filling gas. this happens at various gas stations. the automatic shut-off at service station pumps do not sense pressure to shut off. this causes fuel to spill on side of car, ground and possibly the person filling the tank. this is an environmental hazard, fire hazard and could cause harm as an inhalant. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty 4x4. while contact stated that while refueling the vehicle, fuel spewed back out from the filler neck. the contact stated that the failure recurred constantly whenever the fuel tank was filled close to capacity. the contact inspected the vehicle and advised that the fuel tank would need to be replaced because the fuel check valve was defective. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repairs. the manufacturer was contacted and a complaint was filed. the approximate failure mileage was 21,000.

Every time i fill my gas tank up a bunch of gas spills out all over the jeep, the ground and me. this has been happening for around 6 months now. this happens at every gas station i've used. *tr
