I was leaving my bank and entered my vehicle and proceeded to start it with my key. my key turned and would not start my vehicle. my battery is about a 1 month old and i checked to see if there was a loose connection or corrosion (connection tight and no corrosion). i checked all fluids (fine), i just had oil, oil filter and breather filter changed a few weeks ago and they check all fluids. i turned lites, wipers, turn signals and radio on (worked fine), horn worked. with my key in the ignition, i had no problem turning the steering wheel. i opened my driver's door and saw it show up as "door" on the dash panel and noticed engine lite on. i depressed and held brake pedal down and was able to shift to neutral and back to park with no problem. i had a friend come and look at my liberty, and he checked and did everything i did. we both thought it was the ignition switch. i informed the bank that i was having car problems and have to leave it in their parking lot over nite. i had the jeep liberty towed to a jeep dealership in stuart florida the next day (12/12/2012). they informed me that the pin in the ignition switch broke off and fell inside and that they would need to replace the whole steering column. and it would cost over $1000.00. i was informed the next day (12/13/2012) that they could not locate a new steering column and that they would need to replace the steering column with a used one. now it will cost $800.00. i researched and noticed that other jeep liberty owners have had problems with the ignition switch. i hope i am not being scammed. my jeep liberty has about 50000 miles on it. as i think about it, wouldn't the ignition switch need to be replaced and not the whole steering column? my jeep is still at the dealership and i hope to get it back on 12/17/2012. *tr

My original intent was to file a complaint about a gas overflow issue, but after seeing all the other liberty complaints, i have included other issues i have: 1. for at least two years, when pumping gas, the gas has continued to flow even after the automatic flow has shut off. i now stand at the pump and when i think it is getting full, i start pumping by hand to avoid the overflow. after checking on the internet, this is an issue other liberty owners experience. i did receive the initial recall notice for 13v-252, but nothing since to say the part is in. since the gas overflow is experienced by many owners, is this part of the recall? 2. check engine light is always on. it has been re-set many times; is ok for a day or two and then re-appears. per owner's manual, this is not an issue unless the light is flashing, which it is not, but why does this continue to occur? 3. both back electric windows have fallen down without warning. both are now secured in place with tape, as it would be too expensive to repair. 4. the back left door will not open from the inside. *tr
Both rear passage windows fail to work at all we had to tape up the windows and the power make a grilling noise. *tr
Failing window regulator on a 2006 jeep liberty , chrysler is aware of the problem , does not want to issue a recall, or do a good will fix . est. to fix over $ 500. *tr

Last year around aug 2011 my key stuck in the key slot couldn't even get it out had after a while figured out if u push the brake all the way in then put in park then sometimes the key would come out started workin after about 2 to 3months later then on feb 27 12 it started 2 stick again then it wouldn't start we called chrysler. they told us 2 have it hauled 2 some where 2 have it checked its at lee auto in aurbon maine they we are now paying 200$ and they have not figured out what it is -chrysler, gave us a case num [xxx] and they told my husband if it is a faulty part they might help pay for it. its has only 72000 2 74000 miles on it we had 2 put a new fuel pump in it already in 2011-i think we got the lemon right now i have 2 really on some one 2 give me a ride 2 work oya we all so went through a set of tire 1 year after alignment. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*tr
2006 jeep liberty has defective windows that fall down and present a safety hazard. the 2007 jeep liberty vehicles have a lifetime warranty for the same defect. this is dangerous and should be covered by the same warranty. *tr
Abs, esp, brake light, battery and check engine light, come off and on i have took it to jeep at two different locations, neither place has been able to resolve my problem, i even drove with tech in the car, he saw the light come on and was unable to determine the cause. *tr
I have two (2) jeep liberty's both 2006 (1) renegade, & (1) sport, both vehicles have had the window regulator's fail, (2) - window regulator's failed on the renegade, (1) on the driver's front side window, the regulator had to be replaced on 02/12/11 & again (1) on the driver's rear window, the regulator had to be replaced on 05/18/12 this was on the 2006 jeep renegade. (2) - window regulator's failed, on the jeep sport, (1) on the driver's rear window, the window regulator had to be replaced on 09/19/11 & (1) window regulator again on the same window on 10/08/14 needs to be replaced, the same window regulator needed to be fixed twice within three years & 20 days, the dealer would not fix the window under warranty because it was over the exp. date by 20 days, why is it always the window regulators because it's a plastic part and that's why it keeps failing, that's just bull i have spent over 1200.00 dollars on repairs on windows regulator's alone & it's the same part each time all 4-windows, i used to be a great fan of jeep, i've owned jeeps for (20) years now, but i have become really disappointed with my vehicle's, the first time it happened i was on the highway driving at 65 mph when the window suddenly opened, the wind ripped through my vehicle started to blow things around so bad that i had to pull over and tape my window up so i could make it home, and i'm not the only one, alot of jeep liberty owners have had the same thing happen to them and had to replace the window regulators, thank you *tr
Key stuck in ignition. steering wheel turns, shifter works, keys will not come out of ignition. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. the contact stated the ignition rod within the steering column failed and the vehicle would not start. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic who diagnosed the failure as a steering column problem. the steering column was replaced by the mechanic for $489 at the owners expense. case #20734725 was filed with the manufacturer who stated that there would be no reimbursements due to the mileage, and because the vehicle was not taken to an authorized chrysler dealer; therefore the case would be closed. the failure mileage was 106,000. updated 06/06/11 *bf the consumer stated the vehicle would not start on several occasions after components were replaced to try and rectify the problem. the consumer stated inside the steering column there is an ignition rod which must make contact in order for the vehicle to start the ignition rod. updated 06/20/11
The esp bas, traction control, and abs lights come one randomly...could be driving, in park, going 20 mph...has been going on now since april...dealership says they cant do anything unless the lights are on/active...this morning my brakes tried to give out on me and it really scared me...i am a mother and need to trust that i paid for a reliable vehicle...after reading about 30 different forums i am not the only one that is having this problem...this needs to get fixed immediately please. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled numerous times while driving. the failure mileage was unknown.
Over the past few months, i have occasionally smelled a kerosene odor while driving my jeep liberty diesel. today, i read about a common problem with the fuel heater on the liberty diesel and so i checked the heater on my vehicle. the plastic insulator around the electrical pins of the fuel heater connector (on cable) is discolored and partially melted. doing further reading this evening, i discovered that this problem can also be a source of fuel seepage. although i didn't see any evidence of fuel around the connector, this is obviously an electrical problem and may have been also been the source of the odor i have been smelling while driving. i feel fortunate to have discovered this in a pre-failure condition and have not (yet) experienced a serious fuel leak, engine fire or engine stoppage due to fuel system failure, i was disappointed to learn that your agency was aware of this design problem back in 2007 (pe07041), but closed it with apparently no action taken. in my opinion, this condition certainly warrants a manufacturer's recall and repair. i have photos of the partially burned connector on my vehicle, should you be interested in seeing them. it is quite obvious that the electrical capacity of this connector is being exceeded and is a serious design flaw. *tr
Window fell in door, rear passenger on drivers side. self replaced motor window in doorsystem. plastic part inside snaps or shears off. bought a replacement part that has metal stops. no problems. have replaced all four window motors. they all snapped at different times. by husband *tr
Gas tank overflows when fueling because it doesn't sense when its full. i have to stop fueling before i think its full so this doesn't happen, so i am unable to fill tank completely. spills all over my clothes, on the ground and down the side of my vehicle. also i smell an electrical burning smell when i'm driving my vehicle sometimes which is very scary. *tr
2006 jeep liberty. esp/bas lights . problem does not register on computer. hundreds of other people with same problem. bas module is the problem. why is there not a recall on this. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty. after rolling the power window down and attempting to roll it back up, the power window switch failed. the contact mentioned that the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 30,506.
I have a 2006 jeep liberty that i purchased 6 mos ago with 25,000 miles. the back passenger window has stopped working. still researching repair estimates. *tr
Key stuck in ignition- shifter failure. *tr
2006 jeep liberty will not shift out of park intermittently. after several attempts of applying service brake it comes out so far. dealership wants $600 bucks to replace shift lever tower and shift cable. others on line talk about same problem. dealerships plead ignorance on the problem, but will gladly take $600 to replace the shift lever tower and ! *tr
1. there are not events leading up to the failure. 2. the rear drivers side window regulator. it has broken 3 times in two years. the consequence is that during times of extreme heat or cold, the window will stay down posing a health risk (in cold weather-cold related illness and in hot weather-dehydration) as well as a safety risk (outside debris entering vehicle at high velocities) to the rear passenger. 3. the regulator has been replaced three times: twice by dealership and once by myself. the old parts are not available. *tr
Both rear windows fell into door cavity multiple times, window would not roll up by regulator motor, must be lifted by hand after removing interior door panel. both regulators were replaced twice within 18 months, did not correct problem, both windows continued to fall & require removing interior door panel to lift. defect occurs while vehicle is either moving or parked, leaves occupants and contents unsecured and/or susceptible to the elements, theft, and other hazards. only method available to secure windows was permanently tying in closed position. >>> this is an engineering and/or manufacturing defect of a specific part the manufacturer is well aware of multiple failures. <<< the defective part needs to be redesigned so it does not fail multiple times. *tr
In march 2009 i purchased a used 2006 jeep liberty and in august 2009 the driver side rear window stopped working just a loud clicking sound and then you can manual pull and push the window down. a new regulator/cable and window had to be installed. in march 2010 the same thing happened on the front drivers side window and the front passenger window. in july 2010 the rear driver side window stopped working again. each time the windows stops working they need to replaced. money out of my pocket, now my extended warranty is no longer in effect and the work that gets down only has a warranty for so long. there has to be a better fix then forking over $500+ each time a window stops working. it seems at this rate it's going to happened now every year. i am afraid to use the window at all. this needs to be addressed!!!! *tr
Rear light/stop light lubs keep blowing up, i have to change them every 2-3 weeks. i looked on line and it seems that it's a problem for most owners. *tr
Unintended acceleration while at a stoplight. had to turn of the motor to reset. *tr
My 2006 diesel jeep liberty crd 4x4 windows in the rear both stopped working. first one side quite rolling up and down and then on june 4th 2010 the left rear window wouldn't go up and made a loud roaring noise and clicking and my son got soaked from the rain and now it still won't roll up. also, the esp and traction control light came on and is staying on. *tr
Check engine light on and off
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep liberty 4x4. upon starting the vehicle, all of the lights on the instrument panel illuminated. the next day, the abs and the traction control lights remained illuminated while the tachometer and speedometer did not function. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the vehicle had not been repaired but the problem still occurred whenever the contact drove the vehicle. the failure mileage was approximately 56,500. the current mileage was approximately 57,000. updated 05/18/10. *lj
Key is stuck in ignition which is unsafe to leave vehicle unattended at any time, my dealer has advised me that the problem is the gear shifter and since the vehicle is easily shifted into gear without a key it could have rolled away if placed in the neutral or drive gear. *tr
Key stuck in the ignition and unable to remove. had to remove gear shift console and push in a metal piece so that car computer would register that the car was in park. *tr
In response to all the complaints of abs light and brakes feeling like they won't work. i had this problem and was at the dealership a lot over the last 2 years. it turned out to be a burnt wire! i have not had any problems in the last 3 months (which is a long time for this car)!. please tell your mechanic to check the brake sensor (abs sensor) wires!! *kb
I have a 2006 jeep liberty renegade. in the last 4 weeks, i have replaced 5 left tail lights, and 1 socket. the day after i had the new socket, the light went out. the mechanic, as well as the man at the parts house, have both said this is a bad problem with the liberties. what can i do? *tr
I have had my 2006 jeep liberty at the dealership 6 times in the 3 years i've owned it. i bought this car brand new and have had nothing but problems since. first the car would not come out of park, at the dealership they couldn't duplicate the problem and sent me on my way. after may months of this happening daily i had it towed on a flat bed to the dealership and they finally replaced a cable that connected the gear shift to brake after telling me i could just slam really hard on the brake and it would just disengage, i should just have done that instead of having it towed. (stupid me i guess) then i had the same abs traction check engine light problems i've heard and read many complaints about, first time taking it in, the problems stopped and they sent me home. second time, i drove it straight there and made them look at it and drive it, they had my car for four days and call me to tell me there was nothing they could do because the codes were stored and not active reset the computer and sent me on my way. now yesterday a year later and at 48,000 miles the car started again. i made them hook it up while the car was still running and the lights still on. what they don't tell you is that shutting your car off "stores" the codes. with the car still on, the codes were active and they found the problem. the body control module. however now it is out of factory warranty and i had to fight with the gm to get it covered. they still wouldn't cover it under factory but did cover it under extended warranty and waived my deductible. however i am still very upset that this has not been recalled, this should not be at my expense at all!!! i will never buy another jeep ever! *tr
Abs, esp, and main brake light flashing alarm chime going off. been to dealer twice. bcm has been changed twice, instrument cluster has been replaced. no dx codes being sent so dealer can't do anything. *tr
At this first occurrence, while pulling out of the dealership parking lot with the vehicle, the front passenger side window dell into the door. i took it back and they informed me they would fix it free of charge. this same problem with the window falling down occurred in june 2010 about a year after purchase, affecting the right rear window, which had not even been used. i found out then that there was an ongoing problem with the window regulator in 2006 & 2007 jeep libertys causing this problem. the 3rd occurrence, with the left rear window in november of 2010, made me get online and file this report after carmax refused to honor their warranty on this repair and sent me to jeep who charged 100 dollars for it. checking the service history through jeep.com, i found that this vehicle had been in the shop for this problem at least twice with the previous owner. i would like for the chrysler company to take full responsibility for this and issue a recall, repairing the problem in a way that it stays fixed, rather than replacing the window regulator with more faulty parts as they have been doing. this can be very dangerous and distracting if it falls while travelling down the highway or, in my case, over 2 hours from home in freezing temperatures with a 7 month old baby in the seat by the window.
2006 jeep liberty rear door won't open and glass slide down. *tr
Ignition switch binds up intermittently also shifter and steering wheel do not lock up and can move shifter from park without pushing brake. adjusted shift cable but did not solve problem. found that shifter and cable assembly were worn. removed and replaced shift interlock cable and gear shift assembly. test operation ok. *tr
When i parked my 2006 jeep liberty and attempted to turn the key and pull it out of the ignition, the key would not come out. it would go no further than the lock position. it appears that the shifting cable that reads when the car is in park and enables one to remove the key had failed and was not reading that my car was actually in park. i had to press the cable down in order to remove my key. i did a google search for the problem and it appears to be a common problem for the 2004-2006 jeep liberty. now my shifter does not stop between gears, it simply slides through them without having to press the button that would normally lock them in place. i can shift from reverse to park without pressing the break and without pushing the button. in order to pull my key out i have to take the cover off and press down on the cable. now that i noticed it is a common problem with other jeep liberty's, i think a recall is in order. *tr
