Problems with 2005 Jeep Liberty FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2005 Jeep Liberty starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 91 577 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2005 Jeep Liberty

When filling the gas tank, the automatic pump shutoff does not work causing the gasoline to shoot out and all over the car and myself. this does not happen at just one gas station, but at all of them and has occurred repeatedly since buying the car last august. *tr

While filling fuel tank, fuel began to be spit out of the filler neck. fuel dispenser had clicked and shut off fuel delivery when this occurred. this occurs every time the gas tank is filled. i doesn't matter whether the tank is filled slowly or fast. since vehicle is out of warranty dealers refuse to do anything about this issue.

Every time i fill the gas tank, if i leave the gas pump auto fill lever on then gas will spew out instead of the gas lever stopping. at first, i thought it was the lever malfunctioning, but after having the same problem recur at different gas stations and pumps, i knew it was my vehicle. i have not had it inspected but have found a similar problem exists with others owning the same vehicle model. this is obviously not safe when gas pours out onto the vehicle, ground, and operator, as well as a malfunction that costs extra money. i have learned not to pump a full tank of gas into the tank and thus avoid the problem, but i am concerned this problem could cause decreased gas mileage or other issues within the fueling system. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. the contact did not experience a failure.

Just like many other jeep liberties, fuel spews out, when i am filling the tank up. it does not matter which station, or brand that i use. the pump shuts of, followed by about 1/4 to 1/2 gallon of fuel coming back out. this is dangerous to the environment, the body of the vehicle, and to me. i had the problem diagnosed at a local chrysler dealership as the vehicle needing a new fuel tank. i contacted chrysler this morning, and they said since there isn't a recall, they would not do anything to help me out. since this is obviously a manufacturing defect, since so many people have the exact same problem, chrysler should be fixing this problem, at their expense! i should not have to pay to fix chrysler's mistakes. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure) however, the part was not available to do the repairs. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the contact did not experience a failure.

Fuel erupts out at end of fill up for quite some time but in this incident the fuel erupted out before 1 gallon and right after 1 gallon. a large amount came out and would have gotten on me but i recognized the sound and moved. i now have to slowly trickle the fuel in or it erupts out. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline , structure). the contact stated that he attempted to have the vehicle repaired but the parts were unavailable. the manufacturer was notified. the contact had not experienced a failure.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact stated that when refueling, the shut off valve failed and fueling did not cease automatically. as a result, fuel would spew from the filler neck valve. the vehicle was neither repaired nor diagnosed. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 112,000.

When filling up my jeep for the first time (i had just bought it the previous day), the pump kicked off, and before i had time to put my hand on the pump handle, gas came spewing back out at me. about 1 - 2 gallons came out. i ended up getting gas all over my shoes and the bottom of my pants, and all over the side of my vehicle and the tire. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact stated that when refueling, gasoline would spew out of the filler neck without warning which prevented the contact from refueling to capacity. the failure was recurring over a two year span. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline , structure). however , the vin was not included in the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

The vehicle was being filled with fuel from a standard fuel pump equipped with an automatic shutoff sensor. when the fuel tank became full, the sensor was not triggered, resulting in fuel spraying from the fuel tank, covering the side panel of the vehicle, the ground, as well as the person fueling the vehicle. this issue has been recurring 100% of the time when the vehicle is filled using an automatic shutoff pump. different gas stations have been used with the same results. this is obviously a safety hazard considering that the person filling the tank and the car are becoming soaked in fuel, and an environmental issue due to the amount of fuel being spilled onto the ground. *tr

Intake valve is not working properly. gas spills during refueling. *tr

The automatic shut off for the gas tank stopped working and has not worked for 6 months. when i refill the gas tank - no matter which service station i fill it up at - it overflows, spilling onto the jeep, my clothes, my shoes, etc. i try to guess when to stop filling it and sometime i guess correctly...sometimes not. this is a serious safety issue - googling it reveals it is happening to many, many jeep liberty 2005 and 2006 owners but chrysler won't do anything about it. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact stated while at a stop sign the vehicle stalled without warning. the gasoline gauge showed a quarter tank. an independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and stated there was no gasoline in the fuel tank upon looking underneath the vehicle. gasoline was placed in the fuel tank and the vehicle restarted. the failure was not diagnosed by an authorized dealer. the contact was included in nhtsa campaign id number:13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline , structure) and was waiting for parts. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Every time i fill up my gas tank, it overflows. i put on the lock and then it pumps until it overflows. gas then drips down the side of my car and onto the ground, creating a fire hazard. once this happens, i then can smell the gas fumes inside my car as well. *tr

Upon normally fueling vehicle, gas will expel from fill tube when tank is near full. this causes a serious and potentially dangerous outflow of gasoline onto pump operator, vehicle and pavement. gasoline has already damaged paint finish on vehicle. estimated environmental hazard of 1 pint per fill-up or approximately 100 pints per year. dealer charged $105 to test for condition and it was determined that fuel system spillage is caused by defective filler tube and vapor tube. repair cost estimated at $640 parts and labor. vehicle manufacturer must be responsible for defective vehicle system and not vehicle owner. this is not a maintenance item, nor was it caused by mis-use. this vehicle defect has serious safety and environmental concerns and this condition has been noted, campaigned and recalled previously on many other chrysler vehicles. request that vehicle oem pay to replace defective parts to avoid any further contamination to the environment, avoid further vehicle damage and eliminate on-going risks to persons. *tr

It started backing fuel out of the filler tube almost everytime as the fuel tank approached a full level. at first it started intermittently but lately, it does every time which results in a fuel spill on the ground, down the side of the vehicle, and on me, if i'm not paying attention. it seems dangerous. the same thing happened on my 07 chrysler aspen and chrysler answered the problem with a recall and extended warranty on that item. it has worked perfectly since then. i've talked to the dealer and they don't seem to know the answer...even though it seems likely to me that it is the same problem as the chrysler (maybe the same system as the chrysler). if they seemed more positive about the repair, i would pay to have it fixed. *tr

When pumping gas i can only put in less than a gallon at a time or it will all spit back out of the tank. i have been to 3 mechanics and they all said its a common problem with jeep liberty's and they need to replace the tank... think i'll wait and see if chrysler does the right thing and recalls the problem seeing how hundreds of other owners have the same problem. *tr

Along with many others, my 2005 jeep liberty overflows with fuel about 80% of the time when i go to fill it. i have to fill it halfway and then slowly top it off the rest of the way or risk an overflow of up to a liter of fuel all over the side of the jeep and onto the ground. it does not matter whether i am holding the pump handle or if i set it to automatically shut off. this is at the least a very messy and environmental pollution, and at worst it is a very dangerous fire and explosion hazard. this is also adding to the cost of ownership as i lose an extra dollar or so of gas almost every time i fill up. i realize this may be an expensive fix, but chrysler / gm need to determine how to fix this problem before people get hurt. please investigate this problem! thank you for your time. *tr

When filling the gas tank, the fuel spews out of the tank instead of the pump shutting off. this happens at all filling stations and different types of fueling nozzles. the side of the car and my shoes and pants were covered in gas. the gas station bay was also covered in gas. this is extremely dangerous. since the fuel pump warns about "re-entering a car" or "using a cell phone" around a gas pump; how dangerous is driving with clothing covered in gas, side of the car covered in gas and how dangerous is leaving a gas puddle at the station? chrysler apparently is replacing some tanks or putting in an "extension" valve on some cars, but mine is not under their warranty. this is not only a fire hazard, but a health issue as well! *tr

Gasoline spills out of jeep when being filled. the gas handle stops automatically and then gas pours out. i have to have the attendant pour the litter on the spill. often times it gets on me. this happens overtime i fill up regardless of what station! i am upset to see that this is a problem for many other owners. this should've a recall. *tr

Every time i put fuel in my liberty, gas sprays everywhere. it does this every time i start fueling. it also does it when the tank is full. i lose a least 1/2 gallon every time i fill up. the dealership says nothing is wrong with it. if there's nothing wrong, how do i get covered in gas every time i put fuel in? it's very frustrating. i did get a recall n46 for the fuel tank, but their way of fixing it, is to put on a trailer hitch. that does nothing to fix the overflow issue. *tr

We had this jeep from day one. when you fill the tank it worked great until about 2 years ago. now when you fill the thank at the very end of fueling it will kick gas all over the out side of the car and if you are standing near it you will be covered. i have had it looked at and they say it is the tank and that i will need a new gas tank. this is a manufacturer defect and i think it should be replaced by jeep. Every time i go to fill my jeep up, the gas tank over flows. it shuts off after a second or two, but there is a significant amount of gas that goes on the floor, and all over my car! *tr

When filling the vehicle, the fuel blows out soaking my hand/arm, side of car, puddle on ground consistently. i'm unable to fill the vehicle without this occurring. this is not a first reporting of this issue. *tr

All jeep liberty 2005 - 2007 as far as i know. i have a 2005 and my daughter has a 2007. gas spews out of the gas tank when gas pump shuts off when full. everyone i know who has one of these vehicles has the same problem

When filling the gas tank the fuel spews out and does not automatically shut off. this happens at different gas stations and started happening at approximately 50,000 miles. *tr

When filling the fuel tank, as the fuel level nears the fuel tank capacity the gasoline splashes out of the filler neck and spreads down the side of the jeep liberty and forms a large puddle on the pavement of the gas station. this large puddle of gas could cause a fire/explosion if ignited, thereby killing the occupant of this jeep liberty and other customers at the gas station. in addition to this if the large puddle of gasoline is not ignited, after about 10 minutes the spilled fuel has all evaporated into the atmosphere causing pollution to our atmosphere. i am concerned that i am violating epa emission laws. *tt

When fueling the car at the gas pump, it overflows. shut off mechanism is not working properly. jeep dealer said that it needs to replace the gas tank. this is a problem with many jeep liberty's. *tr

I have had numerous issues with this vehicle. i have had to replace the cooling fan, three window motors, the alternator, head gaskets, the fuel pump sensor is broken, the oil sensor is broken, when i pump gas it spills out, the radiator, the electrical system on both the left and right side. the tail lights don't work properly and i have replaced both the lights and fuses as well as the sockets numerous times. these are just the things i can think of off the top of my head. i've spent thousands of dollars, literally, on this car. i feel like it's a death trap waiting to happen and can't wait until i am able to purchase something else, it won't be a jeep product. jeep doesn't care if you have numerous issues with their product. when i first started having issues i called the dealership i purchased from to talk to my salesman and i was asked what my mileage was. i was right around 48,000 miles, i was put off numerous times and told he would be who i would need to deal with. after i hit the 50,000 mark they informed me he had been murdered and i was not out of warranty. each passing day seems to bring new problems with this vehicle. i just thought someone should finally know. i'm also not counting the recalls in on my list of issues.

Increasingly, gas pump auto shut offs fail. at this point, 100% of the time, the gas pump auto shutoff fails, spilling several ounces of fuel on to the vehicle side and the ground beneath it. *tr

Gasoline spills out of the vehicle's fuel filler neck upon completion of a full tank refilling. initially, this seemed to occur intermittently without regard to gas station or particular fuel pump. now at 114,000 miles, this happens at every fill up. *tr

My gas tank keeps over flowing when i fill it up same as many people online and jeep. will not fix it. *tr

I wanted to include my vehicle incident in regards to the complaints on the jeep suv fires. i thought it was necessary to include my entry, because unlike other incidents mentioned in the investigation, my vehicle spontaneously caught fire while i was driving it and was not the result of impact from a crash. it was a friday evening and i was traveling home on the highway during rush hour traveling with the flow of traffic at about 65 mph. all of the sudden, and without warning, my vehicle started losing speed at a rapid pace. thankfully, i was in the first lane and was able to pull immediately into the breakdown lane. all of my dashboard lights came on and while i was leaning over to inspect what could possibly be the problem, the hood of the vehicle suddenly burst into flames. i exited the vehicle swiftly and luckily a tow truck driver who had saw the smoke immediately called 911. the car was engulfed in flames in less then 5 minutes. had i not been able to exit the vehicle or had children restrained in the back seat, there could have been serious injuries or possibly a fatality. i reported the incident to chrysler after going through my insurance. there response was a polite letter telling me they were sorry for the incident, but were not responsible. the vehicle was less than 2 years old at the time and serviced regularly. the finding of the fire dept.'s inspection was inconclusive, but i was told in confidence that it seemed more than likely it was a faulty issue with the vehicle. after the incident, i took multiple photos of the interior and exterior of the jeep, which included under the hood since we suspected the engine was at fault. if they are useful to your ongoing investigation, please feel free to contact me so that i can email them along. thank you. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. while attempting to refuel the vehicle, fuel splattered all over the contact's clothing and shoes and spilled down the side of the vehicle. the failure occurred several times. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 50.

When fuelling my liberty, the fuel wont stop pumping until its all down the side of my car and on the ground. *js

My jeep has had a constant issue with gas shooting out the spout when filling it up. i have contacted the dealership locally and was told they are waiting for a recall. this was in late 2005 with same vehicle with different vin series. this is 2014 and no recall. i have contacted manufacturer many time and told no reported issue for this vin series. thank you for you great watch dog service! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. while refueling the vehicle, fuel began to spew out of the filler neck. the failure recurred on several occasions. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to diagnose the failure. in addition, the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline, structure); however, the part needed to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 300.

Mfg seems unable to provide parts for recognized recall to my established jeep dealer to install trailer hitch to provide additional mechanical protection for fuel tank.
