Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 2005 Jeep Liberty

When filling the fuel tank, the pump does not automatically turn off. resulting in fuel spraying all over operator, jeep, and pavement. i have read many other similar complaints, is chrysler going to step-up and recall this potentially dangerous problem before someone is seriously injured? *tr

Gas tank would not take fuel. for 177.00 the dealer told me the safty valve was stuck in the fill tube and i needed 1400.00 for a new tank. only 72,000 miles and all new valves ,2 recalls and now this. never again. *tr

Filling up the fuel tank, the automatic fuel dispenser does not stop allowing fuel to spurt out. i lose about 1/4 -1/2 gallon every time. i slow fill to help alleviate, but it doesn't always work. consistent fuel spills on the pavement and side of vehicle. also gas smell inside vehicle after filling up. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact stated that when refueling, fuel would spill onto the ground abnormally from the filler neck. the dealer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 99,000 and the current mileage was 103,000.

for the second time in less than a month my gas tank has overflowed while filling. i went to a different pump than the previous time. this time the pressure of the gas going in when it overflowed was enough to cause the gas to spray back out and upward towards my face. i have a 3 year old who rides in my vehicle all the time including when i stop for gas. i have to take her out of her carseat and carry her inside to pay. gas gets on my hands which i can't go inside to wash off without getting gas on her in the process. if i would have been standing in front of the gas nozzle this time, it would have sprayed into my face and eyes. *tr

i purchased a 2005 jeep liberty from a dealer lot 01-27-2012. today i filled up the gas tank for the first time and it overflowed on me, got on my jeans legs, jacket, on the ground and on the left rear quarter panel of the jeep. the dealer filled up the gas tank before it was taken off the lot, and i was not informed of any problem by them. this vehicle transports my 3-year old in it!!! *tr

When going to the gas pump to get fuel and placing it on automatic, when full the pump shuts off and then it "burps" back at me. spilling gasoline on me and everything around me. it is also ruining the paint on my vehicle, spilling all over it every time this happens. i have owned the jeep since 2006 and it just started doing it about four months ago. my tech said it must be a faulty fuel tank filler neck. it was replaced at the cost of $443.50. and that did not solve the problem. he thought someone had tried to steal my gas and damaged it. it still burps every time i fill it up. i consider this very dangerous, besides being a nuisance and damaging other things. i have checked this out on the internet and find that this is happening to several others who are owners of jeep liberty's. there is a demo on you tube . *jb

I can only pump 50 cents worth of gas at a time into my 2005 jeep liberty. the check engine light is on with the evap code. i took my jeep to my mechanic and he cannot find any blockages or anything bent. he called two different local jeep dealers and they claim they have never heard of this problem. i do not understand how they have never heard of this when there are multiple forums about this issue. my mechanic is going to continue to research for a solution for this problem. *tr

Gas tank overflows when left filling at gas pump, does not activate auto off at any pumps for gas flow. issue that seems to appear in a lot of jeep liberty's. *tr

I own a 2005 jeep liberty, every time i fill the car up with gas, it spits out at me. not just a little, it gets on my clothes, runs down my car and quite a bit ends up on the ground. this has been happening for a long time. i thought this was unique to my vehicle, but i have found out a lot jeep liberty owners have the same problem i do. when i took my car in to get fixed they said it cost $2100. the people at chrysler that i have talked to admit they have seen a lot of this and were willing to work with me, but it would still cost me $500. i believe this is extremely unsafe to me and the environment and these vehicle should be recalled because of this problem. this is not just unique to jeep liberty, but to other jeep products. *tr

Several months ago, started having difficulty fueling vehicle. fuel splashes back up out of tank. nozzle continually shuts off because gas overflows. occurs at all pumps-not just high pressure. this happens during entire fill process, even when filling an empty tank. requires hand holding nozle and filling at extremely slow rate. even at very slow rate, must repeatedly stop all flow every few seconds or pump nozle will automatically shut off due to gas overflow. takes extreme amount of time to fill entire tank and never sure it is full due to nozle shut-off continually being activated with back up of gas. research on internet shows ongoing problem with other jeeps as well. *tr

Every time i fill my jeep liberty (2005) gas tank, the gasoline splashes out the fuel spout onto the vehicle, the ground and me (the person filling the tank). the amount of fuel that splashes out onto the car and ground when the tank reaches "full" is very significant enough to cause serious injury. this happens each time i fill the tank to the point where i can't fill the gas tank to capacity due to gas fume inhalation and spill on me and vehicle. i feel this is a serious problem that affects my health and safety and would like it fixed. now i only fill the gas tank just below capacity so it doesn't leak fuel. *tr

Every single time i fill up my jeep, it never fails to over fill. the gas pump does not shut off until the gas is coming out and spilling all over my vehicle. *tr

The fuel tank appears to not properly vent whiling refueling which causes the fuel pump to kick off and fuel to be ejected from the tank while refueling. even when you try to refill the tank very slowly the problem is still present. some fuel stations don't have pumps that operate at a slow enough flow rate for me to be able to fill the tank. it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to fill the 20 gallon tank. *tr

When gas is finished pumping, a pint of gas spills down side of vehicle then onto ground. automatic shutoff doesn't engage when finished pumping gas at any gas station. *tr

Every time i go to fill my jeep up, the gas tank over flows. it shuts off after a second or two, but there is a significant amount of gas that goes on the floor, and all over my car! *tr

When fueling the vehicle, the vehicle no longer causes the gas nozzle automatic cutoff valve to operate before fuel is overflowing down the side of vehicle and on the ground. until this fall, the vehicle usually cutoff the nozzle as the tank was full - very full - but prior to overflow. starting two months ago, the tank always overflows at every pump used. this gasoline spill seems dangerous and is an environmental concern. i have noticed that mine is certainly not the first complaint of this nature, and it seems to be becoming a prevalent concern with this particular vehicle.

Hi, i own a 2005 jeep liberty for my wife, purchased it with 20k and now with 98k we have a consistent problem with gas pumps not shutting off at any of the stations where i have purchased gas. at first i just assumed it was related to a particular pump, but have found that it overflows no matter where i purchase gas. i have done some research on liberty owners forums and talked to others who have the same problem. some have had their tanks replaced, which seems to solve the problem. i believe that this is a serious danger, especially with 3 young kids of ages 7,5,2 and if god forgive something horrible would happen and certainly an environmental issue especially when such efforts are made to even control vapor emissions on modern vehicles. the first time the tank overflowed my wife relates it to me as being scared, surprised and soaked her leg and shoes. when trying to pump gas it just literately just not easy it takes about 10 minutes to pump half a tank manually. the stopping the pump to avoid spilling gas is not suitable long term solution. i'm concerned about the environmental issue, but am more anxious about the safety issue this causes, especially for my wife and kids. it's bad enough driving around with the smell of gas around the jeep, but i hate to think about other worse scenarios such as a fire or having gas sprayed in someones face. i hope there is a fix for this and believe that it should be covered as part of an emissions and customer safety related service campaign. please let me know how to get this fixed. thanks, signed *tr

I just had to have my fuel tank replaced because the overflow function did not work when filling the vehicle with gas. the auto-shutoff did not activate causing gas to waterfall out of the tank when the pump did not shut off when filling gas. this is the same problem for which the jeep wranglers were just recalled. *tr

I have a 2005 jeep liberty and every time i fill up my gas tank (no matter what station i am at), it always overflows. i hold the nozzle till the nozzle clicks (indicating the tank is full) and consequently a massive amount of gasoline spills out. it's very embarrassing when other people notice and unsafe for the environment. i have read many other complaints on the internet about this and i have seen youtube videos showing it as well. *tr

Each time i go to have gas put in my vehicle (no matter what gas station) or whether the gas is almost full or almost empty. when the gas is being filled it will spit the gas back out unless you fill it very, very, very slow and wait for the gas to settle. it spits it out on the side of the truck and has a very bad fume smell or odor after having gas pumped each time. this should be a safety concern and i do not understand why this has not been a recall via chrysler-jeep with all of the complaints i have read online. *tr

Gas tank over fills on 2005 jeep liberty. when pumping gas , automatic shut off does not work and tank overflows. very annoying and very dangerous. *tr

When pumping gas into my car, when it approaches full, gas spills out of the tank. it does not recognize when the car is full with gas, and gas spillage occurs. i contacted chrysler and brought the vehicle for a diagnosis into a jeep dealership. the stated that the fuel tank needs replacement which would cost approximately 1600 dollars. they would only cover 50 percent, which i cannot afford, and will not take any other responsibility with helping with this repair. *tr

Gas spurts out the filler tube when the vehicle is being filled and it is near full. the automatic pumps do not shut off as they would when the vehicle's tank is full. this happens regardless of whether i am filling with the convenience lock on the handle of the pump or when filling the vehicle squeezing the pump handle myself. *tr

See compliant nhtsa id number: 10616194. i am having the same problem. the gas station pump does not automatically stop when i am filling the tank. i have to estimate when the tank is full. most times i am right other times it causes spills. *tr

When filling the car with gas it does not stop it pops out and if you are in the way will go all over you on the ground and the car. plus you are paying for gas that is not in your car. *tr

The fuel tank on my liberty spews gas when filling (my warranty has expired). i filed a complaint with jeep, and their response was they would replace the gas tank if i pay a $500.00 copay, which to them is a "one time gesture of good will", and to me is unacceptable. there are hundreds of complaints all over the internet on chrysler vehicles with the same problem, and it's my opinion is there should be a recall and the fuel tanks replaced as a safety precaution - warranty or not. apparently, jeep doesn't regard gas flying in your face as their problem, and i'm shocked and appalled they are not required to fix it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact stated that while refueling, fuel would spill out from the fuel filler neck and onto himself. the dealer was notified, but denied any assistance with repairs of the failure. the manufacturer was not notified. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 74,000 and the current mileage was 79,000. the vin was unavailable.

When filling my 2005 jeep liberty with fuel it spits back almost a quart. i have tried different pumps at different stations and it does this every time. the problem is very harmful to the environment and to me as i breathe in the fumes. there needs to be a recall to protect consumer. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 jeep liberty. the contact stated that whenever she refueled the fuel tank, gasoline fuel would spew back from the tank. the failure recurred whenever the vehicle was refueled. the vehicle was not inspected or repaired for the failure. the current and failure mileage was 109,114. updated 05/12/11*lj updated 06/17/11 *bf updated 06/30/11

When filling my 2005 jeep liberty with fuel it spits back almost a quart. i have tried different pumps at different stations and it does this every time. *tr

Whenever i fill up my jeep the fuel overflows onto the jeep and on the ground. it has done this for about two years (or more).

Once again, gas shooting out of my 2005 jeep liberty fill instead of the pump shutting off when the tank is full. no it's not "operator error" or "bad fuel" or anything else other than poor design. it happens every time i attempt to fill the vehicle at any pump at any station. this defect has been reported again and again to the nhtsa by many people and they still refuse to do anything to force chrysler to fix these vehicles. chrysler refuses to acknowledge any design problem. (and cigarettes are not harmful either). *tr

After filling the car with gas there are strong fuel odors inside the cabin. this happens each time the car is refueled. *tr

Gasoline pump fails to shut off when filling the fuel tank. one pint to one quart spills out of the tank onto the filler and the ground. potential fire and environmental hazard. happens almost every time the car is filled. *tr

Several months ago, gas started violently splashing back out of the gas tank at the end of every fill-up. i investigated and found this is a well-known and well-documented with a faulty inlet tube check valve. i don't try to overly top off the tank or anything like that. this is not a user issue. see http://www.autoobserver.com/2011/02/chrysler-fuel-spit-back-complaints-rise.html. they call it fuel spit-back. the problem is my make/model isn't one of the ones chrysler has agreed to start helping with, even though it's obviously the same issue. it's very dangerous. gas is spilling and sometimes spraying outside the car at the end of every single fill-up now. *tr

Every time i pump fuel, when it reaches capacity it sprays out all over the place. *tr

I just bought a 2005 jeep liberty limited with 90k miles. my last two fillups at different pumps resulted in the pump shutting off but gas spilling down the side of the vehicle. once was with the autopump lever engaged and once was while holding the pump lever manually. there are so many complaints about this that there needs to be a recall to protect consumers from exposure and protect the environment. consider the amount of vehicles with this problem dumping gas on the ground on a daily basis. it could be a staggering amount of gas. *tr

While refueling, gasoline will splash from the filler neck at the time the pump shuts off. this happens each time we refuel, and we refuel at many different locations. i have attempted to slow down the pump as the last gallon goes in, and even this has not consistently been successful. i would estimate the amount spilled to be an ounce.

Fuel overflows - every time fueling up gas shuts off and flows backup and out spilling out over whoever is filling it. shut off (baffle is not closing) to keep the fuel from coming back out. extreme safety hazard. this needs to be addressed before someone gets seriously injured. past due for recall !!!! *tr

When i fill up my gas tank and let the pump do the automatic shut off it overflows. gas leaks out of the tank, on the side of the car, on the ground and sometimes on myself. this is dangerous and leaves a gas smell in the car for at least a day. *tr

When i fill the car with gas, gas spurts out of the pump after it shuts off. this is a serious safety issue and it appears that jeep is aware of the problem but has refused to do a recall for the fix. i was told by the dealer that the only way to fix it was to replace the entire gas tank at a cost of over $1,200

Beginning in november, 2010, each time i put gas into my 2005 jeep liberty, the pump did not stop in time and gas spilled out all over the car, on the ground, and on me. as of today, december 10, 2010, is has now happened 6 times at 6 different pumps at multiple gas stations indicating there is something wrong with the car. this problem is very harmful to the environment creating toxic runoff and is harmful to me as i breathe in the fumes. *tr

Fuel spill everytime when fill my jeep liberty. *tr

My 2005 jeep liberty limited 4wd overflows its fuel tank every time it is refueled. the vehicle has less than 30,000 miles on it, and this problem has appeared consistently each of the last 5 times i have refueled. the fuel will continue to fill and then overflow the tank unless manually stopped. the problem occurs regardless of where the fueling occurs; any fuel pump causes the problem. the problem must lie in the fuel tank system of the vehicle itself. *tr

Gas tank overflows while refueling and splashing gasoline all over car, ground and person (if nearby). huge safety and fire issue. shutoff doesn't engage and happens both during the filling process or when full. pulling nozzle out some does not help problem. ambient temperature doesn't not matter. live in colorado with both hot and cold, same issue. dozens of complaints on this site and on jeep blogs about this issue. chrysler needs to fix before someone catches fire or a station blows up. i am sure the gas station owners would be happy to join consumers in getting this dangerous situation fixed for everyone's sake. *tr

My 2005 jeep liberty spews gas after filling up every time. estimate was $1800 to replace the fuel tank assembly.

Gas tank overfills and spills gasoline on every fillup, started occurring at under 70k miles. *tr

When refueling the vehicle, gas splashes or spits back out of the gas tank prior to the gas station pump turning off. the amount of gas that splashes or spits out of the tank varies but occurs 100% of the time at all gas stations. the slashed volume appears to be a few ounces up to a quart and has splashed back up to a distance of 24". the gas usually splashes on the vehicle itself and on the ground and will splash on the operator if he/she is close enough to the tank or holding the pump. the gas has splashed/spit back on me a few times. the failure occurs regardless of the pumping speed - it occurs with the pump on the top notch (fast), the bottom notch (slow), anywhere in between and also if you fill it manually without the notches. the vehicle is never "topped off'." *tr

While refueling gas will overflow the filler tube, splashing anywhere from a pint to a quart of fuel onto the ground. this happens on every fill up. the only way to prevent it is to guess when the fuel tank is nearly full and listen for the fuel to approach the top of the filler tube with the fuel flow from the pump as slow as possible. the other alternative is to not fill the tank to full, guessing about where the fuel level is by putting your ear close to the filler hole. in either case there is still danger of spilling fuel onto the ground and on the vehicle itself. the other side effect are high levels of fuel vapor smell inside the vehicle itself. this smell persists for quite some time even with the windows in the down position. this happens every fill up and has been happening for about two years. doesn't matter which gas station i go to. *tr
