We have classified the 65 complaints from 2004 Jeep Liberty about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
My horn will not stop blowing, it woke everyone in my neighborhood up at 10pm last night, and the only way it would stop was to disconnect the battery. water seems to be leaking into my fuse box. i have taken the car to a mechanic and will see how it turns out. *kb
I was sitting at a red light waiting on light to turn, car completely shut off, smoke was coming out from under the hood. an emergency vehicle was sitting in front of me and they got out with fire extinguishers. when i raised the hood the fire flamed up more. there was a recall o4v337000 on the alternator could cause a fire under the hood. i never received a letter on this. i received a recall 2 0r 3 years ago and took it to jeep dealer in kodak, tn. but it was not for this recall
Headlights will turn off without warning at various times while driving. interior lights remain on. lights may flash on and off up to 4 times within a few seconds. occurs in hot and cold weather, regardless of bumps in road, may happen just after starting to drive or after many miles. click sound will be heard inside car when lights go out. lights may remain off for nearly a second before coming back on. jeep dealership unable to locate issue, told me to return when lights go out and stay out. *tr
For over two years, my headlights have flickered. several instances are rapid fire, a few have been for several seconds. a relay type sound will indicate that it is clicking off and on as well. no interior lights are effected. i do not drive my jeep at night, if at all possible. if i do, i travel as close to a tractor trailer, as i can safely get. i will not drive the car out of town anymore. i reported the issue to my dealer's service department, who claimed they have never heard of the problem. *tr
The rear drivers side window regulator needs replacement as it is defective. the extended warranty nor the dealership will cover this very common defect which will cost me $450. *tr
2004 jeep liberty columbia 4x4 3.7 engine. the key will not turn in the ignition to start the car. saw no steering column choice on the components list so i chose other. i have seen on the internet that there are 100's if not thousands of people with the same problem. *tr

All lights, (including headlamps), intermittently turn off. this has happened 3 times already, all at night while driving 65-70 mph on the highway. the first occurrence was around july, 2009. the last occurrence was last night, june 7, 2010. nothing but pitch blackness when they went off. had to try to steer car to side of road. if you turn the headlamp on/off a few times or jiggle the control it will turn on/off and then stay on. this is pretty dangerous. this is my daughter's car and i will not let her drive it anymore as a result. *tr
Headlights intermittently flash on/off several times. i hear the relay clicking. this occurs one or two times every other day or so. *tr
Jeep liberty 2004 ignition switch failed vehicle towed to dealership - part on back-order still
My husband is a mechanic. he and his employer were trying to maneuver a 2004 jeep liberty into the work stall from the parking lot. the jeep had a broken ball joint (a condition that they later found was under recall notice) and would not steer, so my husband was guiding it with a floor jack while his boss was behind the wheel, braking when necessary to help control forward momentum. the vehicle was idling. this is standard procedure, one carried out many times by both men. both men have at least 25 years of experience each as auto mechanics. there is a lip just at the door of the shop to prevent water from coming in, and when the jeep came to this lip, the vehicle tipped slightly, and the right front tire touched the ground. instantly, the engine revved and the vehicle jumped forward at full power. the boss literally stood as hard as he could on the brake but to no effect. the vehicle left a long black skid line behind it where the back tires were trying to brake, but the front tires were continuing to accelerate. my husband was hit and dragged fifteen feet then crushed against an upright support. according to both mechanics, the front wheels should not have had power to them, since the vehicle was not in four-wheel drive and cannot put itself into four-wheel drive: a lever must be raised manually. my husband had to be life flighted to emmanuel hospital where he was diagnosed with a collapsed lung, broken nose, broken collarbone, nine broken ribs, and a broken ankle. he also suffered general crushing of most of his body. a broken left rib was diagnosed two weeks later. the jeep was taken to a local chrysler dealership for repair of the broken ball joint and the transmission pan, damaged in the accident. *tr
The window motor regulators fail extremely often--on average, one fails every 6 months. this sometimes happens while driving, and the window crashes down into the door. it is extremely distracting to hear the window fall while you are driving, the sudden thud could distract the driver enough to cause a crash, and any children or pets in the car are not only exposed to the elements, but are at risk of falling out of the vehicle. other times, the window falls while the car is parked and the car is open for the world to enter. i have spent thousands of dollars on window motor regulators for this vehicle. i purchased it used in february 2009, the first window motor regulator failed less than 90 days later and one has failed every 6 months since. chrysler refuses to acknowledge my requests or rectify the situation, despite a dozen mechanics having told me that this is a known defect. *tr
For a month or so the key had been getting stuck in the ignition and you would have to start the car and turn it back off to get the key out. one night we were sitting in car trying to get it to start. the jeep wouldn't start and within seconds smoke was coming out from the top of the hood. there was 3 adults in the jeep and 2 children. we all got out and within a minute there was flames dropping from the bottom, then within the next few seconds flames were coming up over the hood. the fire department was called and the fire was put out. we were all safe but the jeep ended up being totaled. i was told that the wires to the battery overheated and caught fire. i believe this was a result of something to do with the key getting stuck in the ignition. *tr
2004 jeep liberty sport has loss of power and is quitting customer states that he has had multiple parts fixed and replaced and now the vehicle has the same failure problems as last year. **nar**kb the consumer has had 2 fuel pumps replaced, a wiring harness in the firewall, cruise control sensor replaced, the entire module replaced, ball joint replaced and now the vehicle is losing power and quitting again. the consumer further stated that the speedometer and tachometer both are going crazy. *tr
No warning. efect as described by dealer involved a defective bcm, body control module. peedometer, headlights, door locks, wipers, power windows, air conditioning would not work. rear glass hatch opened and would not close/latch. *ak
Passenger side locks inoperable. when clicking remote keyless entry door locks would lock and unlock continuously for up to ten seconds. i feel this eventually led to the lock motor burning out. *nm
The contact stated that the 2004 jeep liberty was experiencing the same symptoms described in recall 07v192000, but this vehicle was not included. she would like to have the scope of the recall expanded for the intermittent radio/ip/side mirrors/rear wiper. there was also a buzzing somewhere in the dashboard. *ak the speedometer was acting erratically. update 05/04/07*tr
We have had repeated failures on all of our window regulators since we purchased our jeep. the first occurrence was in 2006. i would have to pull our repair file to get the other dates. we currently have another window out, it is taped up to keep things out. this is the window in the back behind the front passenger seat. this has already been replaced. the replacements don't even hold up. we are senior citizens. no one "plays" with the windows. we use our ac so windows are not opened and closed. they just fall down on their own. we can not afford to keep replacing the window regulators. the dealer said he thought there was a recall on this because it is such a big problem ,but i don't see anything here except window regulator complaints. when are they going to take this problem seriously? *tr
Dt*: the contact stated while attempting to pull into a parking lot the vehicle stalled. it would not restart until 20 minutes later. the stalling is intermittent and has happened 30 times. the vehicle was taken to dealer after each incident; however the problem could not be duplicated. after the last incident the dealer repaired 2 ignition wires, it is undetermined if this corrected the problem. the manufacturer has not been alerted.
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle was taken to the service dealer about a year ago because there was a slight vibration in the front end. the dealer inspected the vehicle and determined the tires needed to be rotated. the vibration continued and progressively became worse. today, while driving 30 mph the contact heard a loud grinding sound followed by the vehicle's failure to move forward. the vehicle was towed to the dealer, but has not been inspected. upon visual inspection, the contact noticed the lower ball joint was separated on the passenger side. updated 7/3/2006 - the driver's side windshield wiper arm came loose twice. the wiper arm was realigned to factory specs and tightened to the correct torque setting. when the consumer used the turn signals while the headlights were on the headlights flickered. this is an intermittent occurrence. on another occasions the headlights remained on although the switch was turned off. *nm
I reside in southern california, we were experiencing thunder showers earlier in the day. i went to a 5 hour class, upon returning the horn was blaring, i could not stop it so i had to take the fuse out. then i started the car but the gauges were acting strange. i had a half a tank of fuel but it was reading as if i had a full tank, then the engine light was on, after i got home i shut of the ignition but the car would not shut off. my car is a manual, 4 cylinder, with no power amenities it is a basic car, no air conditioning. it is just a 2004 jeep liberty. after i popped the clutch lightly to stop the engine my lights would not go off. it was not a major storm just a quick shower, it makes me worry quite a bit because this is my main vehicle and if just a little moisture causes havoc what if i was in the snow what kind of problems would it create. another thing since a light shower caused havoc what does this do to the electrical on my air bags? *jb
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 jeep liberty. while the contact was driving approximately 60 mph, the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel and suddenly the engine stalled. also, the speed odometer displayed an inaccurate reading which fluctuated when traveling. the engine restarted and the vehicle was able to resume normally. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where there were replacements of the cruise control sensor, speed control and computer module. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on seven separate occasions for the identical failures. the contact had concern of the safety hazard involved. the failure continued to occur after the service repairs. the failure mileage was approximately 3,000.
I returned home late on evening after an evening of shopping, dinner, & movie. i parked my car in the garage and ten minutes later heard a loud "whoosh" sound. i went to the garage to investigate and saw white smoke. after opening the garage door to dissipate the smoke i looked around the car. i did not see any problem with the tires or leaking fluids. i did see black singe marks along the edge of the hood and black dust over the hood. the fire department & sheriff were called. the firemen determined that a fire occurred under the hood of the car and, miraculously, put itself out. they also determined that a loose wire was arcing with the alternator and disconnected the battery. they ruled the cause of the fire as faulty electrical wiring. the car is 3.5 months old with just under 3000 miles on it. my brother-in-law, who is a retired mechanic, went with me to the dealership to pick up my things from the car and get a loaner car. he could see that the line going from the compressor ruptured during the fire. he speculated that the "whoosh" sound i heard was ac refrigeration escaping when the line ruptured and that the fluids extinguished the fire. i am waiting for an inspector from chrysler to look at the car. i have an incident file open with chrysler, #12193081. i also have the report from sheriff. since this just happened, no resolution has been determined. *la
While driving at 25 mph, the driver side air bag deployed for no logical reason. the consumer lost control of the vehicle and collided with an embankment. the vehicle never ran over anything or hit anything before the mishap. the consumer suffered a sprained wrist, a concussion and trauma to his back. the consumer also reported that before the air bag deployed, that electrical currents from the steering wheel were shocking who ever drove the vehicle. this electrical shock has happened on three different occasions and the dealer has tried to find the source. the manufacturer and the dealer were aware problem. *jb headlights go out intermittently, dealer replaced switch. *la
