Owner of a 2004 jeep liberty. leaving parking lot at slow speed hear crack , stop found left rear lower control arm broken. if car was driven at normal highway speed crash may have occurred and people injured. after closer inspection found that control arm has rusted through causing arm to brake. the control arm was replaced and the right side inspected and found in very rusted condition, it was also replaced and both old parts are available. *tr updated ivoq 02/01/11

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 jeep liberty. when he attempted to exit his driveway, the right front ball joint failed. the vehicle was towed to a local repair facility and the axle was replaced at an expense of $280.00. the manufacturer was notified; however, a representative stated that the lower ball joint was repaired in 2007 under recall 06v288000 (suspension: front: control arm: lower ball joint). the failure mileage was 49,800. the current mileage was 50,200.

My husband is a mechanic. he and his employer were trying to maneuver a 2004 jeep liberty into the work stall from the parking lot. the jeep had a broken ball joint (a condition that they later found was under recall notice) and would not steer, so my husband was guiding it with a floor jack while his boss was behind the wheel, braking when necessary to help control forward momentum. the vehicle was idling. this is standard procedure, one carried out many times by both men. both men have at least 25 years of experience each as auto mechanics. there is a lip just at the door of the shop to prevent water from coming in, and when the jeep came to this lip, the vehicle tipped slightly, and the right front tire touched the ground. instantly, the engine revved and the vehicle jumped forward at full power. the boss literally stood as hard as he could on the brake but to no effect. the vehicle left a long black skid line behind it where the back tires were trying to brake, but the front tires were continuing to accelerate. my husband was hit and dragged fifteen feet then crushed against an upright support. according to both mechanics, the front wheels should not have had power to them, since the vehicle was not in four-wheel drive and cannot put itself into four-wheel drive: a lever must be raised manually. my husband had to be life flighted to emmanuel hospital where he was diagnosed with a collapsed lung, broken nose, broken collarbone, nine broken ribs, and a broken ankle. he also suffered general crushing of most of his body. a broken left rib was diagnosed two weeks later. the jeep was taken to a local chrysler dealership for repair of the broken ball joint and the transmission pan, damaged in the accident. *tr

Upper ball joint on passenger side upper control arm separated. ball shows extreme pitting and no signs of lubrication. *tr

Near collision due to torque problem, vehicle moves slightly left with acceleration and moves substantially right with deceleration. if you release gas pedal in a curve vehicle moves right about 1.5 feet. dealer test drove found vehicle shifting to left and right based on acceleration and inspected vehicle initially could not find fault. only through lost jeep forums with other owners of jeep liberty complaints of same problems found and the fix was that all of the rear bushings are worn on the lower control arms and possible the upper tri-link arm/bushing need replacement with the rear upper ball joint if movement present. real problem is that due to the lower control arms bushings worn out that the rear differential is shifting slightly causing the vehicle torque problem. *tr

2004 jeep liberty sport :suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint. 63431, dealer states that both lower control arm need to be replaced.

I own a 2004 liberty and had the front lower ball joints replaced due to a recall. i started hearing an awful sound and took it to my jeep dealer to find out the front upper ball joints are bad. the left is severely separated and could go at any time. i don't have $400 to repair what i would consider a defect. this vehicle is barely 5 years old and i have had some pretty major problems with it. in the short time that i have owned it i owned a 1996 jeep cherokee for 8 years and never had more than an o2 sensor problem. i would appreciate a response at your earliest convenience. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 jeep liberty. while driving approximately 50 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle was pulling to the right. the failure occurred each time the vehicle was driven. he was informed of nhtsa campaign id number 06v288000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint) and took the vehicle to a mechanic to have the front end aligned. the mechanic stated that they could not align the front end because the ball joints were defective. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they repaired the vehicle according to the recall, but did not align the vehicle. the contact felt that after such a repair, the alignment was necessary and should have been included in the recall repair. the manufacturer has not been notified. the current and failure mileages were approximately 93,000. updated 03/09/09. *jb

Both left and right upper ball joints have failed and require replacement. the condition was originally evident by front end suspension noise and loose steering. the joints exhibit severe wear and corrosion. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 jeep liberty. while driving between 15-30 mph, the pivot bushings on the suspension control arms began making knocking sounds. the sound would occur when the steering wheel was turned left or right, during acceleration in a straight line, depressing the brake pedal, and when driving over a bump in the road. a mechanic stated that the pivot bushing located on the front and rear control arms failed. the failure began when the vehicle was first purchased and has become progressively worse. the contact scheduled a repair appointment. the powertrain was unknown. the current mileage was 40,435 and failure mileage was 39,122.

I own a 2004 jeep liberty, 46,000 miles. i preempted an incident. but, i took my car in for realignment and discovered that the upper right ball joint is extremely unsafe. received two opinions. both did not want to give the car back to me as i presented a safety hazard on the road. i just brought my car in for the recall and had the lower ball joints repaired about 7 months ago. right upper is currently being fixed by a jeep dealer. *tr

I took my vehicle in for a safety inspection and found that the right upper ball joint was 'very loose' and the left upper ball joint was 'loose'. my 2004 jeep liberty only has 51,761 miles and there should not be such a serious problem such as this given the age and mileage of this vehicle. this vehicle was already recalled in the spring of 2007 for the lower ball joints. chrysler refused to pay for my upper ball joint repair. *tr

I have a 2004 jeep liberty and i have had this front end shaking when you get up to 40 plus mph and the front tires seems to drag. i have taken my car to a chrysler dealer ship but the problem was not repaired but the flushed the radiator, changed the oil and charged me $372.00 and i have not found out what the problem is with this 2004 jeep liberty. *tr

I purchased my 2004 jeep liberty 3 months ago from the jeep dealership in rockville, md. this week i got a letter in the mail saying that there was a safety recall on the lower ball joints, immediately after reading this i called my dealership to make an appointment to get this fixed. the dealership tells me that the parts are on backup and wont be in the shop for a few months! this is a huge concern and problem, i share this vehicle with my 21 year old sister and am afraid of our power steering going out on us and causing a dangerous accident. a few months is way too long to wait on a recall as serious as this! i would appreciate help with this very serious issue. thank you. *jb

My dealership has failed to address a safety recall within a reasonable period of time. the recall was issued by daimler chrysler over 12 months ago, and i've registered my vehicle with both the manufacturer and the dealership. however, i've not received any follow-up since the registration. this is unacceptable. *jb

Received a recall for jeep liberty for lower ball joint, on the recall it states "this can cause the ball joint to corrode and separate. ball joint separation can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning." i called the dealer and the parts are on 3-6 month back order. i would think something this dangerous would not be delayed this long. *jb

Upper ball joint failure, jeep liberty sport 4x4. february 2007, driving a country road at approx 40mph, the right front of the vehicle collapsed. with brakes, i stopped the vehicle prior to colliding with a tree. both upper ball joints were replaced by joe jacoby jeep in warrenton, va. based on their conversation with higher headquarters, cost to repair was mine alone. $1600. *tr

My vehicle, a 2004 jeep liberty, has been safety recalled (f23) for lower ball joint replacement. although i had heard of the recall in fall of 2006 my dealer would not take action until i received formal notification of the recall which i received in early january 2007. shortly after receiving the recall notice i contacted my dealer to make an appointment. dealer informed me that parts were on order and not expected for at least a month. my name was added to a wait list. i contacted the dealer today and was informed that parts would not be available until may 2007. i feel this is an unreasonable time to correct what daimlerchrysler characterizes as a condition that "can result in a loss of steering control and can cause a crash without prior warning". and i'm supposed to keep driving it? *nm updated*jb

Daimler chrysler safety recall f23-lower ball joints; every time i call the dealership about how long it will be, the time frame just continues to get longer. last time i called was 1/9 and was told another month. today, 2/13, i was told i am 24th in line and they only get 2 sets per week so i am looking at 12 more weeks. this is absolutely ridiculous. *jb

Daimlerchrysler safety recall f23 - lower ball joints the safety recall was issued and daimler chrysler has failed to supply the necessary parts for the repair. they new of this recall for months prior to the formal notification. their failure to evaluate and supply the appropriate parts for this recall is negligent and unacceptable. i have to wait 6 weeks to get the parts to repair this safety defect. this corporation should be ashamed of these practices and do whatever necessary to ensure the immediate demand for the parts is supported. this company new the number of vehicles involved in this recall and to not be producing in advance at a necessary speed to meet this demand is unacceptable safety practices. *nm

Tl*- the contact stated that he received a recall letter on 12/12/06 for his 2004 jeep liberty for the lower ball joints. he was contacted by the dealership, smith cairns jeep, on 01/28/07 and made an appointment for 02/09/07. the contact stated that he was called that morning and the dealership informed him that the ball joints for his vehicle were not in. the contact stated that this has taken too long for the repairs. there have been no failures to date.

Recall lower ball joints for 2004 jeep liberty just got off the phone with a service dept. representative from chrysler rt. 130 informed me that he is only receiving a small shipment of ball joints a week. i have been placed on a waiting list. i also informed the rep. that my jeep was making a front end noise..*jb

I have received a safety recall f23 - lower ball joints on my 2004 jeep liberty. when i called the local dealership, as instructed, i was told the wait to get this problem fixed would be months because daimlerchrysler is only sending the dealership 3 - 5 units of replacement parts per week, not the hundreds that are need. this seems very negligent on the manufacturer's part and i would hope that they could be forced to speed up this process. i feel unsafe driving my vehicle until it is fixed. *nm

Daimler chrysler will not reimburse me for a front end alignment performed at the time of a safety recall for ball joints. a safety recall for defective ball joints was mandated by the nhtsa on jeep liberty's. ball joint failure can result in loss of steering control and crash. to determine proper installation on new parts and correct position a front end alignment is necessary. further information is available. *jb

I received a recall notice for my 2004 jeep liberty in the mail in december (safety recall f23 - lower ball joints). i admit, it took a bit for me to call to make my appointment to get the car fixed because of personal issues. i called my local jeep dealer on 2/5/07 and was told there was a wait of at least 150 people ahead of me because they are only shipped 3 of the parts that need to be replaced a week. at that rate, it will take me, and many other people, almost a year to get my car repaired! the woman even told me that the wait there was one of the shorter ones in the area. *jb

Tl* - the contact called regarding a 2004 chrysler jeep liberty. the contact received recall 06v288000 for the lower ball joint. the contact called a chrysler dealer, and was told they did not know when the part would be available. the contact stated that the dealer is not taking names for a waiting list. the contact was told to keep calling back to see if the part were in. the contact heard a loud noise coming from the front of the vehicle for approximately two months. the dealer will not diagnose the vehicle because they believe the noise was due to the lower ball joint. *ak

Tl*- the contact stated that the 2004 jeep liberty with 25000 current mileag) did not have the ball joint problem. the complaintwas that he had not gotten any feed back in three weeks pertaining to how long it would take to honor the recall. *ak

My 2004 jeep liberty has a recall for the (f23) lower ball joints. i took my vehicle into a jeep dealership on 18 january to have the problem corrected. i was told that the parts were on backorder through chrysler and that it would be at least 6 weeks until they arrived. on 2 february, approximately 8:00 am, i was leaving my home for the airport. i was still in my driveway thankfully when the accident occurred. my vehicle had a sudden jolt and the right side of the jeep fell, burying my right front tire. the lower ball joints had separated with no warning. it caused additional damage to the tire and undercarriage. i would hate to think what would have happened if i were on the road or highway. this recall is so severe! this will cause deaths if someone doesn't do something about it. how can they not have enough parts for such a severe recall??? my jeep was towed to the a dealership. they did manage to fix it along with the additional damage that this recall caused. *jb

Customer received a recall f23 from daimler chrysler and customer has as concerns**cc the consumer was placed on a list for the recall. the manufacturer was sending out very few parts. *jb

2004 jeep liberty customer has concerns about recall f23 lower ball joints because the shop didn't have the parts**cc *jb

Safety recall f23 - lower ball joints - i first called the dealer to make an appointment to have this repaired. they said it would take about a month. i called again and now they're saying that i am #54 on a waiting list that is growing. they are saying that parts are back ordered and they have no idea when they will get the parts in. they gave me chrysler customer service # to complain. i am very afraid to drive my car, don't know what to expect. after getting this recall i went and found that there is at least 4 other recalls on this vehicle that i was not aware of. one being an engine problem. what can i do? *jb

I own a 2004 jeep liberty that has been involved in safety recall f23 (lower ball joints). i called the dealership today to schedule my car to be repaired, and they explained that "we can only order three of these parts a week" and that it may be some time before they can repair my car. i went ahead and ordered the part today, but i feel that their response is not acceptable and timely. *jb

I recently received a letter about a lower ball joint recall on my 2004 jeep liberty. although the manufacturer fixed the recall i was informed at the time of service that i now have to spend $40 to have the automobile aligned due to the recall service. i contacted chrysler and they informed me that the recall did not cover the alignment although the alignment was needed because of the service performed under the recall. i feel that any service needed due to a recall should be part of the recall . thanks for your help, james jones. *nm

Tl* - the contact stated that she received recall letter 06v288000 for the lower ball joint on the 2004 chrysler jeep liberty. the contact had an appointment for the recall repair, but the part did not come in. the dealer advised the contact they will notify her when they have part. the contact has not experienced any problems with the vehicle. the dealer informed the contact they were not getting the part in on a regular basis. *ak updated 02/22/07. *jb

I recently received notification of a safety recall for my 2004 jeep liberty with regard to the lower ball joints. the problem is that water may enter into the front suspension lower ball joints on my jeep. this can cause the ball joint to corrode and separate. ball joint separation can result in a loss of steering control and could cause a crash without prior warning. i contacted my dealership in order to get the part ordered and line up an appointment to have the repairs completed. the dealership was contacted on 01/24/07..the day after i first received notification of the safety issue. they informed me that they would order the part and call me to set up an appointment to as soon as the part came in. i had not heard from the dealership, so i called them on 02/13/07 to inquire about the "ordered" part. there was no record of a part being ordered. therefore, i placed the order again on that day and asked if someone could call me back to give me an idea of when i could be scheduled for an appointment and how long it would take for the part to come in. i have not been contacted since that last call. i was told by the phone attendant at the dealership that the manufacturer is only sending the service area 3 ball joints at a time--and that is why its taking so long for me to be serviced. i asked the attendant how serious was this recall and if i was in any danger. she asked me if my car was operating properly and i told her yes to my knowledge it was, and she told me that i was probably ok. i would really like to know why it is taking so long to have my car serviced and should the dealerships be taking such a cavalier approach to this recall? *jb
