Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2002 Jeep Liberty

Automatic transmission failed in november 2003 at 57,000 miles. clutches in the center of the clutch pack were destroyed while the remaining clutches were like new. *ak

While driving at 35 mph vehicle stalled, causing the consumer to pull off the road. consumer had vehicle towed to a dealership. mechanic told the consumer that transmission failed. *ak

While driving, the driver heard a loud king noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. took vehicle to dealership and the mechanic indicated the problem was the rear axle which needed to be repaired or replaced depending on the damage that had been done.*ak *jb *nm

As with many others on this site, i have been having drive line vibrations at around 45-55 mph; also, pulling to the right (after 3 alignments!) which cause tires to wear prematurely. jeep really should fix this stuff for all of us! *la

Speed sensor wire at rear differential was chafed due to close proximity to brake line to left rear wheel. the braek line contacts at the base of the conenctor where not plastic armor protects the wire. *ak conductors are exposed and ground on the the brake line, causing speedometer to give erratic or no readings. most evident with passengers or a load in the rear, caousing the wire to contact the brake line. erractice speed data also effects automatic transmission shifting, causing sharp and abbrupt shifts to lower gears at speed.

Rear brake axle seals have failed 3 times which soaked the brake pads each time. dealer replaced seals and pads. now the vehicle is shaking and pulsating especially in the steering wheel when braking from 60-40 mph. please also note that the transmission failed and was replaced at 25,000 mi.*ak

Transmission down shifts(clanks) we have a jeep liberty sport 2 wheel drive. downshifts hard when applying brake.(warm or cold) we have had it at the dealers shop about 10 or 15 times in about 2 1/2 years. shop foreman told us to wait until 30,000. mile check up for trans. so i guess i'll have to pay for service on it to get it fixed. they have know idea what's wrong with it. so why do i have wait?? i guess some one has to die to get the problem fixed? or get badly hurt!!! so if some one has the same problem report it before some one's family gets hurt. still nothing as of yet has been done!!!!*jb

This is a safety issue because we purchased this vehicle to tow a small boat. fortunately, we were not towing the boat at the time of the incident, otherwise we would certainly have lost control of the vehicle. my 2002 jeep liberty is well within its original bumper-to-bumper warranty period. suddenly it slipped out of gear, lost power, and the "check engine" light came on. it still runs in 1st, 2nd, and reverse gears, but slips out at every stop light and has to re-engage. the dealership said they won't honor the warranty because they claim the transmission was drained before i drove in to the dealership - but that's exactly the symptom that needs to be fixed!! they admit the vehicle couldn't go more than a couple of miles with fluid that low, but the problem occurred during a highway trip and no one could have drained the fluid while i was driving. there are no leaks or drips under the vehicle and there was no warning of any kind. where did the fluid go? our liberty was one of the first off the assembly line. other liberty owners will probably experience this problem around 32000 miles. please warn them before someone gets hurt.*jb

While driving at any speed and with no warning, the transmission locked up, and the vehicle became hard to control. the consumer was forced to pull over. the dealer was notified. *ak the manual transmission locked up in the 2nd or 3rd gear and became difficult to disengage. once you get it going again, after 5-10 seconds later for the next 3-4 shifts, the second gear was tough to get out of. the consumer was almost rear ended twice. *scc *ak *jb

Jeep 2002 liberty sport 4wd when making right hand turn in 2wd or 4wd wheels bind/ turn andcar stops dead in tracks, sometimes hear thumping or metal sound. acts like a intermittent transfer case problem...car is in 2wd most of the time..sharp right turn well with-in turning radius of jeep...normal driving! *ak

Vehicles automatic transmission failed and had to be replaced, then replacement transmission had a leaky factory seal and again had to be fixed. vehicle pulls to right as all other libertys do and now when the brake is applied, the right front marker light comes on. dealership said it was uhauls fault uhaul says it is chryslers fault. vehicle is a total dissappointment!!

Purchased a brand new 2002 jeep liberty in march, 2002. at 8k, while driving at 50 mph, rear end began fishtailing causing loss of control of the vehicle. this occured on dec. 16th, 2002. we still do not have the vehicle. a representative from jeep inspected vehicle and stated that "rear axle was never properly welded to vehicle." this occured on the assembly line at the factory. we do not feel vehicle is safe at this point.the structural integrity is serious compromised. we're concerned other 2002 jeep liberty's may have this problem.

I bought a 2002 jeep liberty 11/23/02 it has a vibration chrysler admits there is a problem to kiro 7 news but won't admit it to us, this car needs to be fixed can you help? *nlm

My 2002 jeep liberty has had a vibration since 1400 miles. it now has 29,000 miles and the same vibration. i have contacted the manufacturer about this twice and been back to the dealer numerous times to have it checked. the original complaint that i contacted daimler chrysler with they gave me a complaint number, and told me that there techs were aware of this problem, and they were working on it. i then contacted them again this year and asked if they had resolved it, and they act as if there is only my complaint, and no resolution.

Upon making a slight lane correction at approx. 60 mph, my daughter's 2002 jeep libety began swerving uncontrollably. she felt no resistance to the steering wheel as she tried to stop the swerving. at no time did she apply the brakes. witnesses said it appeared she had a flat tire. eventually, the vehicle entered the grass median and rolled 2.5 or 3.5 times coming to rest on the roof facing on-coming traffic. the complete rear end(tires and differential) separated and ended up approx. 75 feet from the vehicle. the right front axle or cv joint was broken. neither her passenger or her air bags deployed. the driver's seat belt was broken at the end of the motion of the rolling. both occupants were bruised and cut. we believe the axle failed and caused this potentially fatal accident. this vehicle had approx. 3000 miles on it. at 1800 miles the engine had thrown a rod and the engine was replaced completely. the jeep liberty is structurally unsound and of poor design particularly in the area of the rear suspension. daimler-chysler has lowered the suspension in obvious response to roll over incidents.*jb..*ak

While driving at highway speed, the front axle broke and caused the right tire to blow. consumer loss control of the vehicle and caused an accident. dealer has been notified. mr upon inspection, it was found that the tie rod was also cut in half. *jg...*ak

While driving 5mph, vehicle makes a rumbling noise when shifting to overdrive.*ak consumer stated the transmission makes a whine sound and the engine cuts oof sometimes, and the fuel pump is loud.*jb

When driving along at 48 to 55 mph, i can hear and feel a bearing type vibration noise coming from the middle or front drive train. the noise is a low pitch and can be heard best when going up hilly roads. my best guess, the noise is coming from the gears over meshing in the front axle. waitng for d.c. to come up with a fix. dt

Purchased 4/02 and by 7/02 with approx. 6,000k experienced hard downshifting when stopping as well as between gears. dealer service "removed burrs from driveshaft". returned for service 8/02 with same problem. again "removed burrs from driveshaft". on 3rd visit in 9/02 i was told they couldn't repair anything and that" the vehicle had a programmable transmission and it's memory was likely responding to a previous similar driving session"...hence the gear slamming! returned 4th time 2 weeks later and this time was told there were no recalls on the complaint and the dealer would file a complaint on my behalf to daimler/chrysler and i'd be contacted when they heard something. i have not heard from anyone even after sending my own complaint letter to d/c in 11/02. have also experienced many incidents of rear tires slipping and fishtailing in various road/weather conditions as well as constant right pull and have to fight steering wheel to drive straight.

Jeep was struck by a ford escort on l side, rear door & wheel well. rear axle was knocked completely off jeep, landing beside jeep. mechanics stated that axle was not bolted on, but attached with two metal strips, which appeared to have snapped on impact. our accident was in a very confined space (next to a canyon wall), but in a crowded traffic situation this could be incredibly dangerous to adjacent traffic. this also caused enormous repair costs & wait time (coming on two months and waiting).*ak

While driving, the vehicle pulled dramatically to the left. consumer attempted to correct the vehicle and collided with the highway divider. dealer infomred consumer the front axle had broke which caused the accident.ts there were 2 injuries. *jb..*ak

2002 jeep liberty limited. i have replaced the engine, rebuilt the 4 -wheel drive shaft, replaced the a/c condenser and coil, and now the radio, dome lights, power locks are broken. the blower motor resistor has been replaced but now the blower motor is broken. what a lemon from day one. latches on hatch not working correctly, mold smell from a/c. it is something all the time with this vehicle. *tr

It only has 3700 miles on it and have only driven it 2 months and went to get 1st oil change and told me that there was a leak & to take it back to the dealership. after taking it to the dealership they determined that both the front and rear seals on the transmission were bad and needed to be replaced. it wouldn't have been detected if i haden't taken it to get an oil change. or even if they wouldn't have told me i would have no way of knowing that it was actually leaking. i just have to say they don't make trustworthy vehicles like they used to.

No impact to front differential noted. *ak

The vehicle exhibits loud low frequency vibrations @ 53mph. the driveshaft has been replaced after being declared out of balance. it is now at the dealership for the 5th time for this repair. discussions with other liberty owners indicates that this is not an isolated incident. a subsequent test drive of one other vehicle showed the same problem.*ak

When vehicle goes between 50 and 53mph the car will begin to dramatically vibrate. i took it to the dealer where i purchased it (norwalk, ct) and they told me tires were out of whack & they rebalanced tires & said it was fixed. obviously they did not test drive b/c problem still existed. took car to pamby in ridgefield,ct and one of the owners test drove it and said nothing was wrong. brought car back to them about 1 month later and 2 mechanics said yes, car does vibrate at 50mph. they took out drive shaft and put another one in from another liberty sport & same problem happened. they then took out drive shaft and gave me my old one back. service writer said he would contact chrysler and get back to me with info. after 3 weeks and no call i went into dealership and was told that chrysler had not called the service dept. back yet. it has now been 6 weeks and still no answer from dealership or chrysler!! i bought this car in good faith that it would be a safe and dependable vehicle! vehicle also now does vibrating at 70mph. still curious as to when chrysler will recall this and fix it correctly! dt

Vehicle's front passenger side axle broke causing 2002 liberty jeep to roll over. *ts the vehicle rolled over two or three times. fortunately the driver and her passenger were wearing seat belts and their injuries were not life threatening. the manufacturer has refused to accept any responsibility for this accident. *nm

Wheel or axle on the front right side broke and caused the car to swerve and ultimately roll over two or three times. this type of breakage does even happen in a roll over accident. *ak

While coming to a stop in rainy weather vehicle started to slide. contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.*ak tires (235-70-16)there is also a bang in the transmission when coming to a stop. there is no recall. *jg

Rear end differential/suspension and or brakes/wheels makes grinding noise when front wheels are turned, puting rear wheels in a situation of different tire rotation at low speeds, sounding like rear brakes are dragging. dealer has already replaced rear brakes and turned down drums. noise still exist. dealer stated in writing that they were awaiting a service bulletin to correct defect.*ak
