2002 jeep liberty: since purchase at 6k miles and 6 months old the vehicle has had major issues and i feel unsafe driving it but cannot get a new car at this time. tow bills topping $1000 since purchase in 2003. between 2003-2004 the jeep was at the dealer several times due to internal grinding, difficulty steering which increased when braking, and felt like it was in 4high all the time. took to dealership but they could not figure out issue. fiance was driving & we heard loud bang vehicle started jerking & making a grinding noise, then we spun into a median and came to a stop not hitting anything luckily. turned off and back on and seemed to work fine. it broke down again in lexington, ky during rush hour traffic about 2 days after the dealer told me the problem was in the anti lock braking system. we lost all gears and started rolling backwards at a redlight almost hitting a car until i pulled up emergency brake. it had to be towed to dealer. transfer case had cracked and exploded at less than 30k miles. dealer replaced under warranty with refurbished parts. has broken down several times with sensor issues & battery problems. has been towed at least 3 times when sensor problem was not properly fixed at dealer and overlooked as the problem. entire time i have owned my jeep the steering wheel has had a major shaking and rattling action which increases when applying brakes due to recall on ball joints & issues with steering column according to dealership when asked why it will not drive & brake smoothly. after fixing recall jeep worked fine for about 3 months then goes back to previous issues again. ball joint issue causes much difficulty in steering and braking properly and makes me feel unsafe & uncomfortable driving it. i feel as though the ball joint issue prior to & after recall repair has still not been fixed and seems to worsening. *tr
My girlfriend and i own a 2002 jeep liberty which we recently took to the dealer for a ball joint recall. when we took the vehicle to the dealer i asked the service manager if the car would be re-aligned and he said that will be $100 extra. i can't understand how chrysler corp. can let a customer walk into a dealer with a perfectly aligned vehicle and leave with a car that is totally out of alignment. how is this fixing a "safety" problem that chrysler created? how can chrysler put safety in the wallets of it's customers?? we ended up taking the vehicle down the street to our local mechanic that did the alignment for $50. i contacted chrysler re-call dept and they denied my $50 re-imbursement. should i get a lawyer involved in this matter? i am just looking to make an suv safe for all in the future. there are so many case out there of suv's flipping over due to bad tires, defective front end parts etc.. what should i do? any advise would be greatly appreciated. sincerely [xxx]. *ak information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
While my dealer was test driving my jeep liberty the dash went dead. this had not happened before. i did have a multi-function arm replaced last year because the dashboard lights were flickering and no problems since then. the truck has also pulled to the right since i bought it. the dealer performed multiple alignments at that time and it is still not fixed.
Ongoing wheel alignment problems with 2002 jeep liberty. vechicle pulls to the right, so vehicle is misaligned to pull left to compensate for vechicle pulling to the right. i had the jeep in 3 times in a one year period and still pulls to the side. i believe that this is a serious enough problem to cause an ongoing safety issue and an ongoing repair bill for me. *ak
I have a 2002 jeep liberty. the ball joint separated and caused me to crash into a cement wall on i-77 in west virginia. i picked up the car after it was repaired in wv and brought it home. i had to have more work done after i got back because it still was not right. the ball joints have been replaced at least 4 times. i was told by one of the mechanics that they were still using the joints that were causing the problem because they had not figured out how to re-design them. the last time i had it repaired they (hopefully) put ones on that are a new design. i have had to have it towed because it was unsafe to drive because the joint was so bad -- i check it regularly! my insurance company is progressive. chrysler settled with them and paid for all the repairs after the crash. *tr
I have a 2002 jeep liberty and on oct. 7, 2003, i had an incident in which my steering wheel and tires locked up during a left turn causing me to turn in a full 360 facing the car that was behind me. this was on a tuesday. on friday, oct. 10, 2003, i was making a right turn into a gas station and my car skidded causing me to lose brief control of my car again. i was able to straighten up the car and avoid another 360 and possible collision with gas pumps. luckily, no one was hurt and there was not any property damage in either situation. at this point, i contacted the dealership ([xxx]) who told me it was my tires. i went to goodyear and they said my tires were fine and i should go to the dealership. i called the dealership back and they told me to bring it in and they would check it over but they had not heard of this problem before. they were unable to find anything wrong with my car and i really didn't feel like i received good customer service. my reason for submitting this now is because i have seen articles and my mother heard it on the news that there has been a recent recall on 2002 jeep liberties that might explain what happened. i contacted the dealership tonight and asked them about a recall and they denied that there is one. i am also unable to find it on your sight although the article i read stated it as being released by you. i have been lucky that it has not happened again but i do not feel as safe in my car as i did before the incidents. please contact me and let me know if there is a recall and if not, please document my complaint. the next person may not be as lucky. thank you, [xxx]. *ak information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
While driving at 35 mph, the consumer lost power steering. the vehicle rolled over three times. the jeep was taken to the dealership but the problem had not been resolved. the consumer suffered injuries and was hospitalized. *ak s. kvaraitis was the driver. *scc *jb
The vehicle pulls to the right all the time. returned it to the dealer 4 times, they aligned it but it still pulls to the right. i called customer service and was told to work with my local dealer. he claims there is no problem and it is aligned to specification. he claims the truck just follows the crown in the road. i tested the truck in a flat parking lot by driving between aligned parking spaces in both directions. it still pulled to the right. i don't doubt that it is aligned, i believe there is (are) other problems. i can't get a satisfactory response from the dealer or company.*jb
My daughter's 2002 jeep liberty's driver's side front tie rod assembly sheered in half causing my daughter to hit another vehicle. my daughter also sustained a closed head injury as a result of the incident. this incident occured thusday february 6, 2003. her leased 2002 liberty will be 1 year old may 2003.
I lost control of the vehicle two days after purchase in the rain while trying to make a right hand turn. the vehicle went straight through the intersection, up and over the curb and into someones front yard. reported to the dealership. two months later i had my second experience that also happened in the rain. i was trying to come to a stop at a stop sign and could not stop the car. at this time i took the car back to the dealership and they said there was nothing found. the service director at the time referred to it as operator error and thought that i would get used to the vehicle. then seven months later on january 1, 2003, i lost control of the vehicle on the beltway trying to avoid something in the road. it was raining. i was going the speed limit (55 mph) and my car started to spin and ended up going southbound in the northbound lanes and finally crashed into a concrete dividing wall. the air bags did not deploy. i feel very fortunate to be alive and that no one else was hurt. the car was taken to the dealership and it is currently under investigation for possible defects. i feel that i am unable to drive this unsafe vehicle. i have also noticed that the vehicle has a tendency to pull to the right.
The dealer advised me that the pulling to the right is a charistic of vehicle and no solutions at this time. this pull is a constant pull and requires that we hold the steering wheel tightly towards the left to compensate for the right pull. this is a hazard and can easily cause over correction on turns because you are trying to compensate for the pull. dt
While driving at highway speed, the front axle broke and caused the right tire to blow. consumer loss control of the vehicle and caused an accident. dealer has been notified. mr upon inspection, it was found that the tie rod was also cut in half. *jg...*ak
