Recently reported VISIBILITY problems on 2002 Jeep Liberty

My daughter was driving when her back window fell down and scared her. she is 16 years old and not very comfortable with driving anyway. she was able to pull to side of the road. since this time another window has fell down. we just purchased this car for her and am regretting it now. i have read so many complaints about these windows and there has been no recall. i am so surprised!!! we don't have money to throw away!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. while driving various speeds, the contact heard a pop sound and a stick separated from the window. the contact stated that the part that connects to the motor inside the panel was ripped in half. the contact stated that all of the windows failed to operate. the failure occurred a month ago. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the window motors needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was unknown.

The sunroof stopped closing all the way. bits of plastic started falling out. it was stuck open for over a year and i finally was able to look into it. the track is broken with no incident or cause. in researching online, i discovered that many people have had the same issue and that these sunroofs are prone to flying off while driving on the freeway. this should be a recall as it is an unsafe condition and an extremely costly repair for the consumer. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v046000 (air bags) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure related to the air bags. in addition, the contact stated that the headlights were burned out and the windows failed to close. the failure mileage was not available.

I was driving home and noticed my window for no reason fell down. the jeep was bought new by us in 2002. the back seats or windows have been rarely used. we use air and heat, so with the exception of the driver's window, we have hardly rolled down the other windows. i did research about the falling down on the jeep windows. i learned chrysler knew since 2002 about the defective windows. they finally recalled back some of the 2006 and 2007 jeeps. i called them and they do not seem concerned about the danger this could cause. i feel because of the little use of the window is why we have not had the problems several have had. they then proceed to charge you $500. to repair the window with the same kind of part that will break again. this has happened to several people. i asked chrysler about this part, they confess just recently they have changed the part to work. i see the danger this could be if hauling a young child. even though a child is to be in a child seat, they sometimes can get out. if driving down the road and the window just drops, a child could fall out. in a wreck this could endanger anyone. all the windows in the jeep have a problem of breaking for no reason, but mostly the back windows. chrysler is aware of this and should have recalled all these windows. they are bleeding the jeep owners by having to continue to repair the defective windows and are endangering people's life. they should be made accountable for the defective parts that they knew they had and continued to use. *tr

Power failure of the motor for the rear power windows. the windows have failed twice in a year. *kb

I was driving my 2002 jeep liberty and was raising the windows up and the window of the back passenger side fell into the door. these are electronic windows. i was lucky that none of my children were hurt. luckily, the window did not break and i was able to open the door. this is the third time that this has happened in my car. i feel there is a faulty part that jeep does not want to address. it is a plastic part in the window regulator. it cost me $400 dollars the first time to replace the part. the second one jeep replaced for free. i just got off the phone and jeep does not feel responsible for replacing it again. i am not sure if i want to get it replaced again or just fine some way to keep the window up. i am very frustrated because i do not want to replace it with a part that will just break again. *tt

2002 jeep liberty. consumer writes to express discontent regarding several replacements for vehicle including left rear window regulator. *tgw

Rear back passenger window was fixed(regulator) 2 yrs. ago.now same problem has recurred, i called the jeep recall number and they tell me there is no recall for the 2002 jeep liberty, i think that is negligence on their part as a auto company not respecting that this is a widespread problem, i am 1 out of thousands of people with the same exact problem. with the window going down at any given time it poses a problem for the glass to shatter creating a problem for whomever is in the back seat. i am very upset that the dealership won't acknowledge this problem, i need them to understand it is a mechanical fault of theirs. *tr

Rear window regulator assembly had to be replaced. 3rd time in past 16 months. *tr

Both, driver side front and rear, and passenger side rear window regulator clips are broken. all of the windows dropped down into door and are now being held up with a plastic wedge jammed in the opening to hold the windows up. three windows on this one vehicle and thousands of other complaints online and there is no recall? when you are driving down the highway at 70 mph, while it is raining, and the window regulator clip breaks and the window drops down with no notice? this is a safety defect that should be repaired by the manufacturer. *tr

Jeep 2002 window regulators keep breaking. 3rd one. *tr

I bought a 2002 jeep liberty sport in august 2001. i still own it and over the years there has been a consistently recurring problem with the operators on the door windows breaking or failing causing the window glass to fall inside the door. this has occurred on my vehicle at least once a year (to different windows) and each time the repair is to replace the window operator at a cost of almost $300 for the part and equal amount for labor, etc. the failure is apparently a plastic clip that breaks or loses its grip on the glass but the dealers say they must replace the whole operator. i note from the internet that many other jeep liberty owners report the same defect. why can't chrysler/jeep come up with a permanent fix for this problem. it is a chronic defect and a potential safety hazard if there are children in the vehicle. *tr

I am experiencing a rattling sound when driving uphill or downhill through driveway, traveling 5-20 miles an hour. i took my jeep 2002 liberty 2wd to get serviced and received recommended repairs: prosteer control arm with ball joint upper center, remove and install propeller shaft to replace universal joints on both ends, rear wheel bearings, tail pipe is welded to muffler, muffler does not meet design specifications and should be replaced due to exhaust leak as well, remove rack and pinion, complete rack as does not meet design specifications and is leaking. i was driving about 25 mph and my rear right side tire was smoking profusely. i pulled over and noticed the gray smoke from my tire. i took the car to check the rear breaks. they were fine but was told that i had a leak from the exhaust pipe which dripped on to that area. the car has 75,806 miles. i was told that i could loose control of vehicle and entire area can collapse during traffic due to these issues. aside from these issues, i am experiencing a whistling sound, problems with rear drivers side passenger power window regulator which produces grind-like sound. the window came off and i was told that i needed a new regulator for the window. i'm also experiencing a red stain in engine oil drippage on ground. finally, strange odor from car -odor continues to be present whether i wash the carpets and seats (smells like mold/mildew or skunk). *tr

I have a 2002 jeep liberty and i have to replace a window regulator for the 5th time. every in every instance it has been the rear windows. in one instance i was driving down the highway and the window came down. i have two children in car seats and the last thing i need is for them to throw something out or for something to happen to them b/c the regulator failed while i'm driving down the hwy. other times it was parked in the driveway and when i looked out of my house the rear window was down again. the regulators were just replaced on 6-06-10 and now it is 08-26-10. the new regulator didn't last very long, huh. after all of the problems that i 've had with this jeep i will never buy another one!! i have noticed on different online forums that this seems to be a very common problem for thousands of jeep owners. for some reason nobody seems to be addressing this situation. we spend lots of money on vehicles and for their upkeep! the least jeep can do is fix the problem or they may have a bigger problem ahead when everyone decides to stop purchasing jeeps. since i have already decided to do that guess that's one consumer down the drain for jeep! oh, the other thing....i live in tx and it was 107 degrees the other day....would you want to have a problem with your window in this heat....renders the ac virtually useless! i don't need or want my children sitting in a hot vehicle and risk potential heat associated problems b/c of a crappy product! if it occurs at home then i duct tape it before i leave. *tr

2002 jeep liberty renegade right rear window regulator broke for the 2nd time in 3 years. window stuck down and regulator worm cable caused damage to door latch preventing door from opening from the inside. *tr

02 jeep liberty window regulator. this is the 2nd time this has happened to my vehicle and based on the forums i have searched it has happened to 1000's of people. this could be a potential safety problem as the window just comes down on it's own when the cheap plastic part breaks inside. if a child were next to the window, they could unbuckle seat and possibly get outside vehicle. in which case they could be hit or the parent could be distracted and wreck while trying to get child back to safety. there is no warning this is going to happen and all jeep would need to do is replace the part with a metal part and not cheap plastic. i do not know of any cases but would it not be better to try an fix this problem before we have a tragedy? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. the contact stated the rear driver side power window failed. the dealer advised he was aware of the failure and the window regulator would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 97,000.

2002 jeep liberty window rear driver side falling down and will not come back up. have replaced the regulator in 2007 and 2009. now i will have to replace again. this is a defect and safety issue. someone can get right into your car if you can not get this fixed right away. i have also had to replace the rear passenger window regulator in 2008. i have seen numerous complaints about this on the internet. this has been going on for several years with the liberty. chrysler should fix this for free and not make the customer pay for a defect. does someone have to get killed in a robbery or something before this issue is fixed. *tr

Right rear window regulator failed and window fell into the door. after part was replaced by dealer, same window regulator failed 16 months later. this window is next to my 4 years old car seat and is never opened. for me, this is a safety issue. thousands of identical complaints can be found on various sites. jeep is aware of the issue and refuses to fix it. *tr

While driving at freeway speed, the passenger rear window slid down into the door. the cheap plastic lift plate that is part of the window regulator broke. it has been replaced twice now and just broke again. with the window down in the door the vehicle is vulnerable to break-in and damage from the weather. it is a safety issue for me because my child's carseat is in this location. *tr

Jeep liberty. rear windows regulators continue to fail. the windows just fall into the door well while not in use. i rarely open those windows and they just fall out. i have now replaced them four times in the past three years. the dealer states there is no recall on this defect. there is certainly a defective part as i have read over and over of this situation occurring with all makes of the jeep liberty. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. the contact stated that the door locks failed to disengage and he was unable to exit the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where the contact was informed that the window motor had failed and caused the lock to fail. the contact also stated that the failure recurred. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. the failure mileage was 135,000. updated 2/21/13 we purchased the 2002 jeep liberty brand new as a special order in october 2001 as a 2002 model year. the right rear passenger door power window motor assembly failed. this inhibited the door from being opened from wither the inside or outside. at the time, we did not have a child, now we do, when carrying passengers, they had to enter and exit through the drivers rear door. had there been accident which blocked the drivers side, the rear passengers would be trapped. i had the door fixed at the dealer in april 2011. since that time, we had our first child and as law requires he is in the back seat. again, the motor assembly failed and the door can not be opened from the inside. this is a safety issue and i feel a design flaw. i have contacted chrysler motor corp and they do not care. the dealer washed their hands of any culpability in the matter as well. i know i can not be the only one who has experienced this issued with the door failing to open when the window motor breaks. updated 02/25/13

2002 jeep window regulators continue to fail and windows fall open. *tr

I have had three rear power window regulators break on my 2002 jeep liberty. one replacement only lasted eight months with very little use. the failure has caused the door to jam so it cannot be opened. this creates a very hazardous condition that in case of an accident a rear passenger cannot get out of the vehicle through that door. i have read other complaints on the internet about this problem. it seems that this defect is quite common with jeep liberty's. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. while parked, the rear driver side window fell into the door panel. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the mechanic stated that the power window assembly would have to be replaced. after the repair, the same failure occurred on the passenger side window. in addition, the contact stated that when the rear lift gate was unlocked electronically, it would then automatically lock independently. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

I have a 2002 jeep liberty and i am having continuous issues with the windows. they will stop working or fall down. at $400 a pop to get them fixed and reading numerous other complaints chrysler needs to have these on a recall list. *tr

March 2008 my rear passenger window regulator failed. today, august 2009, now the driver side window had just dropped. i see tons of jeep liberty owners have had the exact same problem i called chrysler to complain, and they told me that there is no recall and i am just going to have to pay to repair it. check online at how many people have the exact same problem! *tr

I own a 2002 jeep liberty and have had to replace the window regulator 4 or 5 times. driving down the road the window just falls. this is very dangerous because it is shocking and can cause a wreck. the window falls all the way down into the door and there is nothing that you can do about it. you must repair immediately because your vehicle is not secure- theft, rain etc. if the windows are down the thump thump of the rear tires is excrutiating to your ears. each repair cost $350. to $500. chrysler and the dealerships are fully aware of this problem and refuse to do anything. they admit that this is a bad design (a plastic clip holds your window up) the part is only warranted for 12 months. on the consumer affairs website alone there were 93 complaints of this happening. most owners are just like me and have had to replace the regulator multiple times. chrysler should be made to recall any vehicle that has this regulator. no other parts are available except for mopar and the part has cost me $137. to $170. just for the part- no labor. this has happened to me while under warranty and out of warranty. now both rear windows broke within two days. i repair and next year the same thing will happen. i and any other jeep owner is keeping chrysler and mopar in business by these repairs. *tr

While i was driving on the freeway, the right rear window on my 02 jeep liberty fell down. this, in turn, caused the rear door to 'deadbolt' itself. that is, it will only open 3/4 inch and then the latch catches on something. i'm suspecting a broken window cable may be keeping the lock mechanism from fully releasing the door. this suspected design defect in the window regulator mechanism has made the right rear door unusable. if the window fell when passengers were in the back seat, they would have been trapped in the car. as you need to open the door to take off the interior door trim to get to the window regulator mechanism, the 'deadbolt' state of the lock is preventing the repair to be made. *tr

Rear passenger window "fell" down on it's own at highway speed. caused extreme distress in my 6 year old daughter. have found several thousand complaints about this problem. window regulator failed for no reason. window was not being put up or down. just fell into door. *tr

2002 jeep liberty. consumer states left rear window was stuck open *tgw the consumer stated the window regulator was replaced three times. the window would fall down and get stuck. *jb

Passenger side rear window regulator failed, causing window to slide down into door. *kb

The complaint that i'm contacting you about, is about vehicles that have non-adjustable headlights. i own a 2002 jeep liberty with non-adjustable headlights. after i purchased my jeep back in july, i took it to my mechanic to get the headlights adjusted being that on a clear night, visibility is extremely poor. i can actually drive with the headlights on high beam without impairing oncoming drivers vision. my mechanic informed me that the headlights on the jeep are non-adjustable. tonight i drove in light snow flurries and it was like i was driving in a severe snow storm. i'm a truck driver with 30 years experience and also recently had to drive a 2006 freightliner with non-adjustable headlights. the headlights on this truck actually formed an ( x ) 20 feet in front of the truck. meaning that the right headlight shown to the left side of the road and the left headlight shown to the right side of the road. just driving in rain, my visibility was very poor. the rule of thumb is to not to overdrive your headlights. with the truck, i should have been driving no faster than 30 mph at nighttime and my jeep isn't much better. please investigate this. the several mechanic's that i've spoke to, have informed me that a lot of manufacturer's are going to these kind of headlights. i'm planning on purchasing driving lights for my jeep, which i shouldn't have to do. thanks *tr

We have a jeep 2002 liberty. in the past 2 years our rear windows have malfunctioned. the first happened over 2 years ago on just the rear passenger side. just this year we had both rear (driver and passenger) windows fall. to get them fixed cost $350 a piece. this is the second time for the passenger side. i went to precision auto tune to fix it and when they called jeep for the part the person over there already knew it was a jeep liberty before my mechanic explained what model it was. my mechanic said there was no recall for this. my problem is that we rarely use those back windows and for them to malfunction like this is really concerning, especially for the one we already repaired. i hope there is something you all can find because this is really expensive. *tr

My rear windows have broken (regulator) now 4 times. i hardly ever use these windows and then one day one will just fall down and it never fails that within a day or week the other will follow. the last time i had one of the windows fixed it was only 4 months ago. if the dealer wasn't granting me some form of goodwill warranty it would be costing about $600 every time the both get fixed. the part is obviously not working and needs to be recalled!!!!!!!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. while the vehicle was parked the contact stated the rear drivers side window dropped inside the door panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated the window regulator cable fractured. the technician stated the window regulator assembly and the power window motor had to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. after the vehicle was repaired the failure occurred a second time to the rear drivers side window and the rear passenger side window. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 61,844.

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. the contact stated that the rear window regulators failed and were replaced twice. the windows would fall into the door panel upon the failure. the contact was unable to remove the glass windows from the door panel and the vehicle was taken for repairs. the current and failure mileage was 111,000.

Window breaks off track and will not stay in the rolled up position. this is due to a poor design of a plastic clip that attaches the window to the regulator. unfortunately i cant just buy the plastic clip you have to buy the regulator motor, track as one part. plus jeep will not fix the problem with the plastic clip, so all i can buy is the same flawed part. i live in north i think that it is pretty unsafe to have your windows falling down possibly in the middle of a blizzard. i wander how many accident have been caused buy people trying to hold up their window while driving?or what if the window falls down with a child in the back seat? *tr

We drive a jeep liberty 2002 which we purchased at carmax in arlington,tx in 2006. despite having numerous problems with electric windows for which they had to replace under the extended warranty, we began to notice a loud popping sound coming from the front end when we make a hard left or right turn. we took the car to a service mechanic, diagnosed cv axles,ball-joint problems. attempt made to correct it in several occasions, but the problem re-occurred and getting more worrisome by the amount if time it happened in a day and 7 days/week. we also take noticed that we're not the only one (jeep owners) with this problem, we are tired to take the jeep to repair mechanics and truly, we feel unsafe to drive it on the freeway. what is the solution? will chrysler fix the problem? thanks *tr

The power window mechanisms in my jeep 2002 liberty are failing and it is documented online that this is a universal problem for all libertys. driver's side window mechanism has failed and right rear window has now failed. this is a huge safety issue and i'm wondering why there has not been a recall???? *tr

Without warning the body control module shorts out draining the battery and damaging the multi-control switch on the steering column. causing the headlights, interiorlights, running lights, windshield wipers, factory electric door locks, and dashboard lights to fail. this can cause a fire resulting in a total vehicle loss or loss of lighting at night while driving causing the driver to loose sight of the road. in rain conditions loss of wipers during driving would cause loss of visibility creating a dangerous driver on the road. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. the contact stated that the rear window regulators failed several times. the rear passenger side window was replaced three times and the rear driver side was replaced twice. the dealer stated that the failure was a known issue, but the part had not been modified to prevent the failure. the failure mileage was 27,000 and the current mileage 79,000. updated 3/25/11 *cn the consumer stated the window regualtor failure was due to a cheap clip inside the door panel that continued to break, even when the window was seldom used. updated 05/31/11

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. while driving approximately 10 mph over a pothole, the driver side rear window fell into the door panel. the contact was unable to open the rear driver side door from both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the window regulator motor was replaced. the failure recurred numerous times affected all except the front driver side window. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer as well as independent mechanic where the window regulator motor was replaced. the doors of the failed window motors would not open until the motor was replaced. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 85,800.

There have been five instances of failure of the regulators for the rear door power windows. in this latest incident, the cable for the windows snapped and came through the door lock area in the jam on the rear driver side. *tr

Faulty rear window regulators. to date have had the right and left rear window regulators replaced six times. 7/2006 right regulator, 6/2007 left regulator, 7/2007 right regulator, 9/2008 right and left regulator, 8/2010 left regulator. it is 2011 and they are both now broke again and are now being held up with tape. i continue to pay out of pocket to have them replaced as chrysler continues to make me pay a co-pay which in the past has been $150. i refuse now to pay to replace them anymore and believe chrysler has a duty to make a permanent fix for the regulators. *tr

Both rear power windows on my 2002 jeep liberty have failed to operate. they just fall down into the door and i have to prop them up with different devices. so far windows have failed 2 times on one side and 1 side on the other. the safety issue to me is someone getting into my car when the window falls into the inside of the door. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated overtime the rubber seal on the rear glass came loose. upon inspection the dealership determined the glue between the rubber seal and glass detached. the entire rear window needed replaced.

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 jeep liberty. the contact stated the rear passenger side window regulator became inoperable and was replaced three times by an authorized dealer. in addition, the rear drivers side window regulator was replaced. the failure occurred whenever the vehicle was in motion or stationary. the manufacturer was notified of the repeated failures. the failure mileage was 77,000.

On approx the date entered, the left rear electric window glass dropped into door frame and would no longer operate. investigation found that plastic clip on the end of the window regulator cable gets worn and breaks, and window becomes disconnected from regulator at this point. very expensive for simple fix, cost over $100 for entire new regulator, as plastic clip is not available separately. thankfully i am mechanically inclined and i was able to install it myself, as estimate from then daimler-chrysler was over $300 for repair. since that time, the other window regulator broke in the exact same fashion, and being the replacement part had gone up even further in cost, i taped window shut. before i could afford to fix other window, the one i had previously repaired broke again in an identical fashion. all three rear window regulators, both factory originals, and one factory replacement, broke within 3 years. both windows were then taped up, as i wasn't about to buy well over $200 worth of trouble prone replacement parts only to have situation take place yet again. thankfully, an aftermarket source now sells metal parts to replace defective, wear prone parts supplied by chrysler-jeep. it cost $100 to further repair both windows with aftermarket metal parts, and i have experienced no trouble since. incorrectly designed/manufactured parts supplied by chrysler-jeep are definitely the issue here. *js
