Active headrest restraint deployed while driving on the interstate. no rear collision or other accident occurred. dealership indicates the "tabs" broke off and therefore cannot be reset. quoted me $816 to replace the headrest. seems exorbitant. and something that, as a safety component, should be the subject of a recall (voluntary or otherwise) to be fixed.*dt consumer stated vehicle has been repaired.*jb
While driving on a public roadway at approximately 15 mph and turning into a fueling station, i was struck in the back of the head by the driver seat headrest propulsion system. the headrest is now in a deployed position. i am unable to collapse it back. it caused me to have to stop operating the vehicle at a fuel station for safety.
I was driving and all of a sudden, my headrest smacks me in the back of my head. after looking at it after i parked, i found out the headrest is a restraint system that deployed. the plastic tabs that hold the headrest together were broken. so, after driving back home, i am pulling up to my garage and then the passenger headrest breaks too.
Good morning, i was driving one day when suddenly i was struck extremely hard on the back of my head. so hard that i thought i got into an accident, although i didn't i almost caused an accident. my head and neck were hurting for a while, when i parked my vehicle i realized that my headrest had popped out. not sure why this happened but when i went to research this problem i noticed that a lot of people have been complaining about ahr randomly breaking and due to the fact that it almost caused an accident and how hard i got hit i believe that this is a cause for concerns and an unsafe condition. i took my car back to the dealership and they told me the warranty wouldn't cover this nor was their any recall on my vehicle. i dug a little deeper into this matter as i saw how many complaints there were and saw that this isn't the first time this vehicle has had this problem and the fact that there is a history should at least cause an investigation. with all that being said, thank you in advance for your attention to this matter and have a nice day.
Passenger side headrest safety feature deployed at low speed. i was backing up in front of neighbor home on cul de sac.not involved in any collision or impact. this is on a 2015 jeep grand cherokee
Yesterday (11/24/2019) when my adult daughter entered my 2015 jeep grand cherokee limited, just after closing the door and fastening her seat belt, the headrest burst and hit her in the back of her head/neck. she had complained of discomfort after the incident, so we will be keeping an eye on her to confirm she didn't suffer a concussion. the car was not moving and nothing had occurred to cause the headrest to react.
Passenger headrest safety feature deployed overnight while the vehicle was parked inside our garage. the plastic on the inside of the headrest is broken and the headrest can not be reset.
Memory seats no longer work, therefore causing my seat to be out of whack and i can not sit right. my engine began to make a ticking noise out of nowhere, meaning something is wrong. one headlight is out but isn't and causes my bright to be on at all times. when using my light i now cannot use my actual brights. *pm
My passenger side active headrest popped open all of a sudden while parked. luckily, there was no one sitting there at the time. i've read stories from a lot of other jeep and chrysler owners that experienced the same issue and there is a class action suit to force a recall. at best, this is an expensive fix which really should be the manufacturer's responsibility. at worst, it can knock someone out while driving and cause an accident. please look into it.
The front seat driver side headrest has protruded forward. i just noticed it yesterday when i drove the jeep home from work. it was parked in our company parking lot all day while i was at work when this happened. went to schicker automotive group (jeep dealer) in washington missouri. they told me i need a whole new headrest. total cost, parts and labor. $771.00
While parked in my driveway, unoccupied, and engine not running, the active headrest restraint system on the drivers side deployed. there was no collision or contact with anything to cause deployment. the mechanize internal parts the keep the headrest together broke causing deployment and not allowing the headrest to be reset or put back in place. i had to put a bungie cord around the headrest to hold it back in place so i can drive the vehicle without the deployed headrest pushing against the back on my head, which is very uncomfortable. this occurred at approximately 61800 miles. my factory extended warranty expired at 60000. even thought the dealer is familiar with this problem fca will not cover this repair which was quoted at $900. i was also told the parts are back ordered with no date as when they will be available. this is a defective safety part problem which fca should be required issue a recall.*dt*jb
Front passenger headrest deployed and burst open on its own while vehicle was parked.
Ahr - headrest broken, latch is closed and locked position with the steel retaining rod still captured in locking mechanism, plastic features that retain steel rod are broken, this is not a deployment, this is a component failure, vehicle was parked, engine not running, vehicle was not occupied
Passenger headrest completely came apart. the back is not attached to the front and you see all of the inner components. no incident or shock to the vehicle to cause this. one day it was fine, next day it wasn't.
One morning as i got into my jeep to drive to work, i noticed the passenger side headrest had popped open, seemingly overnight. i did not witness this happening - i just noticed the end result. i have tried to "close" it but i am unable to do so.
On 10/1/2019 while driving home from work in my 2015 jeep grand cherokee laredo, the passenger seat headrest deployed for no known reason. this was on a 2 lane highway with traffic moving up to 55 mph. it sounded like a shotgun blast. fortunately my wife or older kids weren't in the seat at the time because they could have been seriously injured.
I was dropping my son off at school. while i had the car in park, the passenger seat headrest deployed for no apparent reason. luckily he was too short for it to hit his head.
While stationary, passenger side seat headrest deployed. nothing was done to cause this action. no one was sitting in the seat. it will not reset. when it deployed, a part broke which is keeping it from resetting. an online search reveals multiple complaints on this issue. a recall should be issued.
Active headrest on driver's side deployed without warning or cause while driving approximately 40 mph. hit me in the back of the head, startling me and causing me to swerve into oncoming traffic lane. fortunately no one was oncoming during that time. pulled over and surveyed that the shell of the headrest was deployed and all plastic pieces holding cover to shell were snapped inside. could not reset into normal position.
The passenger-side headrest deployed while being driven on a state highway at approximately 55 mph. it randomly deployed without collision, striking the back of the front-seat passenger's head.
While the car has parked in our garage we came out to find that the active head rest safety device had deployed on its own. looks like the plastic retaining parts failed as their is bits of plastic on the floor. obviously this is not a safe design and should be corrected as soon as possible. our jeep dealership has let us know that this in not under warranty and will be over $700 to fix. we will be contacting fca customer service as it isnt right to have the dealership be on the hook for a faulty product.
While simply driving down the road my passenger side headrest just pops open. it seems the clips have broken. this should be a recall as i have spoken to many owners who have had the same issue. this is a safety issue and should be taken care of from the dealership and not cost $800.00 for something that is faulty.
The headrest in my 2015 jeep grand cherokee deployed. the vehicle was sitting in my driveway. i tried to reset it but noticed the cheap plastic brackets are broken. the vehicle has 39,000 miles and has not been in any accident. i have owned the jeep for 24 hours. welcome to jeep?
Active head rest on the passengers seat has deployed. plastic retainers appear broken inside the headrest. this happened while the vehicle was parked in my garage. the vehicle has not had a collision.
Driving on a major highway one morning on way to work and heard an extremely loud "pop". looked back and the leather headrest had completely unloaded like an airbag and deployed. luckily it did not strike my head and cause me to swerve and cause an accident. the plastic piece that holds the mechanism in place snapped. no accident to cause this or anything. clearly the part is defective. this needs to be recalled immediately.
Active head rest on the drivers seat has deployed. plastic retainers appear broken inside the headrest. this happened while the vehicle was parked. the vehicle has not had a collision.
Passenger front headrest deployed for no reason. car was parked and the headrest popped open and could have caused serious damage. this should be a recall.
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep grand cherokee. while the contact's mother-in-law was driving 55 mph, the headrest sprang forward and struck the back of the driver's head. there were no injuries. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified. the failure mileage was 64,218.
I was driving coming to a stop light going about 20mph and i heard a loud bang like a gunshot and got hit in the back of the head by my headrest. luckily i was not hurt but it did scare the living daylights out of me. thankfully if i was not on the highway when it happened i could of swerved and gotten into a serious accident.
Drivers side head restraint deployed while car was in motion on a highway. it appears a particular plastic clip within the headrest broke on its own causing the headrest to deploy. this created quite a safety risk as it was a huge distraction. no accident was involved, fortunately.
While in park in my driveway the passenger side active headrest deployed while a passenger was sitting in the seat. nothing hit my vehicle, i didn't hit anything and no other airbags deployed nor the driver side active headrest deployed. the instrument cluster does not show any indication of deployment and nothing in my vehicles information center display show any kind of event. the vehicle is at approximately 79,855 miles when the incident occurred. the vehicle also has never been in a major accident where any of the airbags or headrest have deployed before. upon inspection of the malfunction i noticed that a couple of small plastic pieces had broken away and were resting in the back cover of the headrest. i feel maybe this is the defective part of plastic that broke and made the headrest deploy.
Driving down the interstate when suddenly the driver's side active head restraint deployed and the headrest shot forward towards the back of my head. luckily, i was seated forward, looking in my mirrors to change lanes so it did not hit my head. taken to the jeep dealership and they stated that the plastic clips inside the headrest seemed to have broken and caused the headrest to deploy unexpectedly.
While the car was running, but parked in the school parking lot. a friend placed his backpack into the car as he was getting into the passenger seat. the headrest came off and was hanging by a nylon strap and a broken piece of plastic was dropped into the passenger floorboard area. inically, i thougt he had done it, but realized he didn't hit the headrest with that much force to dislodge or break the headrest. he got in and we drove home, thinking we would look at it there. meanwhile, i had him text my service advisor (colleen) at greenway dcj dealership in orlando, florida. she advised me that i would have to have the headrest replace as it could not be reattached due to the broken plastic piece. while researching this information i discovered that this is a know problem but it is not yet a recall issue. i feel that it needs to be investigated more closely and the repairs covered. i am lucky that it was not my headrest, and that it didn't occur while i was driving at interstate speeds. i am hopeful that hq will do the right thing and fix my broken headrest as well as inspect and replace or repair my driver's side headrest since i'm now paranoid that it will happen to that one next and while either myself, my husband, or someone else is driving the jeep.
The passenger side active headrest restraint on my 2015 jeep grand cherokee deployed while parked in my garage unoccupied. i took the vehicle to a local chrysler dealer - they checked the computer and headrest and determined that the vehicle was not in an accident and a failed locking mechanism is what caused it to deploy. the dealer agreed to contact chrysler on my behalf for a resolution. i was told by the dealer that chrysler agreed to pay for half the cost of the repair - approximately $350. i agreed to pay the $350 only if they replaced both headrests which they declined. i am currently driving my vehicle with a defective headrest - hoping the second headrest does not fail also.
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep grand cherokee. while driving, the plastic bracket on the headrest fractured and caused the headrest to move forward with extreme force. as a result, the headrest struck the passenger. there was no injury. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer. the manufacturer was contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 47,000.
Family was getting in car after dinner, car turned on but in park, when there was a loud sound- passenger headrest deployed out of nowhere! thank goodness elderly family member sitting in front seat, who is on a blood thinner, was hunched forward at the time! my husband looked at manual and tried to reset as suggested but he states it won't- seems like a plastic piece is broken. called dealership but they state it's not under warranty- car under 36k miles, and will cost $700 to replace since plastic piece broken. kind of afraid to lean head on driver's side now, in case it deploys too!
With my car parked in the garage and no one in it the drivers side headrest deployed.
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep grand cherokee. while the contact was reversing the vehicle out of a parking space, the passenger side headrest deployed without warning or an impact. the contact's wife was injured and hospitalized. the manufacturer and dealer were not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 46,000. *dt*jb
While driving down the highway my drivers head rest collapsed forward.
When making a turn on a city paved road my passenger seat head rest exploded!
Front seat passenger headrest burst while driving!just picked my mom up from the airport she is complaining of headache! it was so loud it scared me i wasn't sure what had happenef then my mom said it felt like something hit her in the head! i thought someone shot at my car!!! i pulled over and noticed the headrest was completely dislodged.i am very concerned if it happens to me ibeould lose control of my car !! this was very scary and i hope my mom is okay!!!
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 75 mph, the driver's seat headrest exploded. the contact stated that a fragment of the headrest struck the driver in the back of the head. the contact stated that the headrest was designed as a preventative safety measure against the whiplash effect during a rear end collision. the contact stated that the headrest actuator fractured into pieces, which caused the headrest to strike the contact in the head. the contact experienced pain in the base of the head, but did not receive medical attention. gengras chrysler dodge jeep ram (460 connecticut blvd, east hartford, connecticut 06108, (860) 289-0246) was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was out of warranty for repairs. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 79,000.
I was driving my 2015 jeep grand cherokee 70mph on the highway when my active front headrest deployed. no collision or accident occurred. my neck is sore now, but no medical attention was required.
I was driving down the road at approximately 35mph on a smooth paved residential street when i heard what sounded like a window shattering. i looked over and saw the passenger seat (unoccupied) headrest had sprung forward and deployed as though the vehicle had been rear-ended.
Active head rest deployed spontaneously - no impact while parked in garage . read that's this has happened to multiple people sometimes while driving . apparently plastic mounting of pin holding it in place till impact is fracturing . cannot be repaired and head rest need some to be replaced or tied back making concept redundant . replacement costs about 600$ . dangerous if deploys in moving car and once deployed is quite uncomfortable driving thrusting neck and head forward limiting forward vision unless tied back

Equipped with ahr "active head restraints", the headrest deployed while driving down a rural two lane road striking my wife in the back of the head. when we tried to follow manual instructions for reset, we discovered the plastic keeper clips were broken off and laying in the bottom of the headrest. fiat chrysler say's. not covered. $667.00 for a new headrest that could have killed her.
There's a clicking noise in the back rest of the driver seat. it clicks any time i'm driving and especially when i hit a bump in the road. it sounds as if it's a portion of the lumbar support.
After picking up my 2 year old son from daycare on dan valley road (city street) in madison, nc, i began to turn out of the parking lot. after getting half a mile down the road (still in motion) there is a loud popping sound that occurred in the front passenger seat. as i look over i see that the passenger seat headrest is detached. we were not in any collision or hard braking of any sorts. i pulled over immediately into the lowe's improvement parking lot to assess the issue. upon my observation it seems as though the covering of the metal bar (that was still lodged within its placed for when the headrest is attached) had broken.
On sunday, june 3, 2018, i entered the left front driver's seat of my 2015 jeep grand cherokee (which is always parked inside my enclosed garage in southern california) and immediately discovered that the driver's headrest was in a protruding position. during a closer examination, i discovered that part of the restraint system used to keep of "telescoping" headrest (designed to deploy during a traffic collision) had broken loose, which caused the headrest to deploy. *photos are attached. subsequently, i conducted a search on several jeep (chrysler) websites and quick discovered that other jeep grand cherokee owners had experienced the same incident. furthermore, when i examined some of their photos with my photos, i could clearly see that the failure involves two small plastic latches that hold a small metal rod in place; which in turn holds the headrest in an "un-deployed" position until needed. in addition, i discovered that numerous jeep grand cherokee owners had contacted jeep chrysler, and the jeep chrysler corp. had told many of the owners effected by this problem, that if their vehicle was outside the 3year/36month warranty, and jeep chrysler would not cover the repair. since discovering the incident, i find this design to be critical to the safe operation of my vehicle and if in fact the headrest had deployed while i was driving the vehicle, i feel it would have most likely caused a serious injury to me (or my passenger based on the same design), or it could have resulted in a major traffic collision which might have led to unintentional fatality. i therefore ask that the nhtsa investigate this flawed part design as soon as possible and based on their investigation issue a recall should jeep chrysler fail to make a quick and responsible effort to the replace the part before someone is injured. thank you, [xxx] . information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
