Problems with 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 50 449 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

While slowing down to make sharp turns the vehicle will spontaneously shut off causing the power steering and breaking to not work. there are no error codes that come up and the radio and air/heat continue to work. the only reason you know the car shut off is because the breaks and power steering won't work. this has happened multiple times but you can never recreate the problem on cue. it just happens randomly without warning. this has happened both coming off the highway ramp around a turn and on a normal back road street going around a turn. the last time this happened was 11-13-2019

It was raining i had to start breaking was getting close to a red light, could not stop and crashed into another car and totaled mine and injured me.

I was pulling into a parking spot and transitioning the vehicle to park when the vehicle accelerated. i had my foot pressed firmly on the brake but it did not stop and it went up and over a parking barrier into another parked vehicle.

I recently purchased this vehicle and it completely shuts off unexpectedly. when it does it affects both the braking and the steering. the first time i was stopped at a light and was an easy fix but the 2nd time i was getting off an exit around 50 mph. i have young children and now i am scared to drive them around in it. i know in not the only one this is happens, there's complaints all over the internet. there should be a recall before someone dies.

Engine stalls for no reason under braking and deceleration. happens more often when braking and turning. loss of power steering when it happens. does not happen frequently , more often in the cold when the car has been started. cant replicate it when car is hot. dangerous when it has happened on exit ramps as car has to be controlled with no power steering and car has to come to a complete stop, put in park where it has always restarted. people behind me not happy when stopping on exit ramps. have brought to dealer after it has happened and the car has not thrown any codes. there is not real pattern to this stalling, but, having to stop the car to restart it posses a danger of getting rear ended. happens at speeds between 30 to 60. happens most frequently in rotaries (roundabouts) when slowing down to enter.

I was driving my jeep on the highway at 55 mph and traffic slowed down. i went to brake to slow down and my vehicle didn't slow. it felt as if my brake pedal went all the way to the floor and i attempted to move into the other lane, but my jeep hit the car in front of me and suffered $9,000 worth of damage. i also was injured requiring surgery on my foot that was on the brake pedal. *dt *dt consumer stated car is repaired.*jb *dt consumer stated i have the invoice, however from my understanding they did not do anything with the brakes. i still feel there was/is an issue with them. i can forward the invoice if needed, but it does not mention the brakes. i did ask the shop and my insurance to have the brakes checked. my father in law picked up the car for me and said that the shop told him the brakes were fine. consumer did not have issues before with brake system.*jb parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*jb *dt*jb

Jeep was having brake problems. replaced all the brakes this spring and still having a problem. took the jeep in to the dealer in june to have the brake booster looked at, said it was fine. since then the brakes have been getting worse. today i crashed into the front of my house. there is something wrong with the brake booster, like i told jeep back in june. this same thing is happening on many other jeeps. please something has to be done. the dealership is saying they looked at the "splash sheild" under the recall and since nothing was wrong they are not responsible for anything else on the booster. please read other jeep owners having the same problem. https://jeepgarage.org/f73/more-brake-booster-intrigue-186178.html#/topics/186178?page=3. i took the master cylinder off and there is a bunch of rust inside the booster. it's a closed system, debris shouldn't be building up or rust shouldn't be getting in there. maybe this was caused from the splash shield and water got inside?

Safety recall was done incorrectly, leading to brakes freezing up. dealership was unable to provide paperwork showing that the recall had been done accurately. according to recall t59/nhtsa 17v-572 a vacuum test should have been completed. if the booster did not pass testing, the brake booster should have been replaced. the brake booster was not replaced, allowing moisture to enter and freezing up. images of the correct installation should have been taken in order to be submitted for the recall. the jeep was in a shopping plaza, moving from parking lot to another when the brakes froze up. unable to get call back from dealership service manager. *dt consumer stated rust built up inside, because moisture was getting in. *jb *dt*jb

When slowing the vehicle it will just silently shuts off. this happens usually at the same 5 places, 3 of them when slowing to make a right hand turn in an s turn and the other 2 going straight slowing to stop to make a left turn across traffic. i feel like it's a combination of braking, steering wheel and when its shifting into 1st since i'm either in a stopping situation or s turn situation. when this happens i loose steering and brakes causing me to go into the opposite lane of travel head on. there have been recalls on the alternator for my vehicle but mine has never been included. there has been a recall for a sensor that has been completed but did not solve the problem. this is a serious issue, my chance for a head on collision is very very scary. this happens about 6-10 times a week.

4 times in the last 3 weeks, the last time just today, as i was decelerating and turning right while getting off highways onto exit ramps, the steering wheel felt like it locked - the power steering turned off, as did the power brakes - i had to coast, and the rpms showed 0, although all the lights were still on. i was forced to put the car in park - while still on the exit ramp - turn off the car and turn it on again to get it to drive normally. which it did, as if nothing had happened. but it's unnerving and certainly unsafe, and a quick search on the internet reveals it seems to happen quite frequently to other jeep grand cherokee 2012 drivers.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle had faulty brakes. on occasion, the brake pedal had to be depressed all the way to the floorboard to stop the vehicle. on other occasions, the brake pedal could not be depressed at all. pomoco chrysler jeep dodge ram of newport news (12629 jefferson ave, newport news, va 23602, (757) 369-3565) repaired the water shield above the brake booster per an extended warranty. however, while the contact was driving and came to a rolling stop, a minor fender bender occurred with the preceding vehicle. a police report was filed. the contact was not injured. two independent mechanics diagnosed that the brake booster cable was the cause of the failure. the vehicle was towed to an unknown dealer in williamsburg, va where the brake booster cable was removed and replaced with a new part. the manufacturer was contacted and the faulty part was sent to them for analysis. the failure mileage was 80,000.

While braking to take a right turn (braking from ~40mph to 15mph) power steering was lost. fought the car around the turn, then pressed the accelerator, nothing happened. looked at the tachometer and it shows 0rpm, tried to brake further and now have no brakes. coast to a stop. no warning lights showed. all electronics were functioning normally. placed car in park then started as normal. model year is 2012z has 130000 miles. this has never happened before. no indication whatsoever of any problem previously

I have had multiple lights pop up on my dash, usually after it rains, but once for no reason. i will be driving anywhere from 20-65mph and the lights will just pop up. (abs, brake, and traction control lights) once i turn my jeep off and back on, it disappears. but when the lights are shown, my jeep drives a little differently.

I was driving down an off ramp towards a right turn at about 20-30 mph . i attempted to make the right turn and brake pedal was very hard , gas pedal wasn't responding and steering wheel locked up(no turning) . the jeep slowed and nearly hit parked cars since brakes and steering were not working . when jeep finally stopped , i shifted into park and pushed ignition off button . i waited a few moments then pushed start button and it started up with no check engine light or service message . i believe altinator or tipm failed while i was driving . i don't believe my vehicle qualified for t37 altinator recall or tipm recall that was issued . i don't wanna put my 2 year old son in this jeep anymore , he deserves better than that . 2012 grand cherokee 5.7 altitude with only 28000 miles . i don't feel safe driving this jeep anymore until issue is resolved .

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while the vehicle was in reverse, the contact's foot slipped off the brake pedal onto the accelerator pedal. as a result, the vehicle crashed into a barn. the failure occurred without warning. a police report was not filed. the vehicle was towed to a body shop, but was not diagnosed. the manufacturer and dealer were not notified. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 17v572000 (service brakes, service brakes, hydraulic). there were no injuries. the failure mileage was approximately 70,000.

Engine randomly stalls for no reason while in motion, leaving the car coasting with no power brakes or power steering. once the car is brought to a stop, it will start back up and continue driving as if nothing was wrong. internet searches reveal that it is a common problem afflicting these models with no clear solution.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving highway speeds, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to engage. the contact stated that it was very difficult to apply the brakes when traveling at highway speeds. there were no warning indicators illuminated before or after the failure. the vehicle was taken to the crystal lake chrysler jeep dodge ram dealer at 5404 s illinois rte 31 in crystal lake, il. it was diagnosed that there was no failure with the vehicle; however, the failure remained consistent. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 68,000. the vin was not provided.

Brakes failed while driving at highway speed. vehicle had 93,260 miles on it when the failure occurred. the jeep dealer replaced the brake booster, and the problem was repaired. the brake booster itself had been replaced in a recall in 2014.

While stopping at a drive-through on my way to work, the brake system experienced an issue. i was at a stop when the brake pedal backed up from the floor and the jeep started to roll forward. i had to stand on the pedal with both feet to keep the vehicle stopped. i was able to park for a moment in order to find a way to get the vehicle safely to a nearby repair shop. they identified the issue as my brake booster. this part was supposed to have been addressed with safety recall p14 back in 2014. either the part was not replaced, the repair was not effective, or the replacement was also defective so as to cause the same failure for my jeep now. only 5 years old and my second catastrophic system failure in as many months. so glad i was not still on the highway when this happened or this could have caused a serious accident!

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 25 mph, the battery warning indicator illuminated and the instrument panel lights flickered and then failed completely. the brake pedal failed to engage while being depressed. in order to stop the vehicle, the parking brake was engaged and, upon exiting the vehicle, the contact opened the hood and fire and smoke were seen coming from inside the alternator. the fire extinguished itself. the vehicle was towed to a dealer. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 50,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 50 mph, the brakes failed when the brake pedal was depressed. the braking distance was extended. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake booster failed. the brake booster was replaced and the failure was remedied. in april of 2014, per nhtsa campaign number: 14v154000(service brakes), a water diverted shield was installed that should have prevented the failure from occurring. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 117,000.

Was in motion on a snowy day pressed on the brakes and they became hard to press to brake i noticed it had a recall a couple years ago on the brake booster and i took it in they told me it was a bad brake booster. want to know if that is something i can get it checked again because it was suppose to be fixed.

The jeep will sometimes require more braking distance than anticipated. usually when cold, the brake peddle will feel hard, and if an event requires urgent braking, continuous firm pressure might not result in normal stopping distances. what normally is enough peddle pressure to cause the vehicle to lock its wheels, now results in a slow, steady stop. this will also happen in reverse just slowly backing down the driveway. when parking on a slight grade, the vehicle will move forward or backwards depending on slope, about 2" when the engine is shut off. the brake peddle also moves toward the floor at that time. recall of the brake booster p14 / nhtsa 14v - 154 was repaired in september of 2014, and i suspect it could again be the issue now. i am having the same dealership look into this.

In the 18 months i have owned the vehicle it has randomly turned off 5-6 times on the highway or on a street. the engine turns off (with no warning on the dash) and you lose power steering and braking. i have taken it to the dealership twice in the last two months and they are not able to diagnose. i am picking up the car tomorrow from the dealership that has had it for the past six days. they will be releasing me an unsafe car that i will not allow my daughter or wife to drive.

I was driving down a busy road in our town today. the battery light came on. approximately 10 minutes later while still driving, the lights on dash started flashing on and off, seatbelt alarm started going off, windshield wipers started working without turning on. the radio turned off. i lost power steering. the vehicle shut off while still driving down the road. i had no power breaks--seemed to almost stop working. i was fortunate to get on side of road in grass to keep from getting hit by another car. if there had not been a grassy area there would have been an accident. the vehicle then was completely shut down--door locks would not work- tried to put key fob in ignition and could not get it back out--was unable to get back gate opened. i had to have car towed to dealership where i was told it was the alternator which in turned destroyed the gel type battery. i was also informed this was not covered under the alternator recall due to not matching my vin number. i was first quoted $2,000 to cover the damage. i am very upset due to the fact that there could have been a serious car accident today. i am thankful my child was not in the car with me. i think it is terrible that the recall does not include the alternator in this 2012 grand jeep cherokee when the description of what "could" happen did happen to me today. i feel that chrysler/jeep should cover this damage in the recall of the alternator. *tr

I drove my car not even three houses away from my residence and had to stop at a stop sign. going roughly 10-15 miles and i could not stop my car. my brakes were hard and nothing happened. my car missed an incoming car and i swerved onto a curb to stop my car. my brakes were completely out! my car had to get towed to the dealership and come to find out it was a recalled part on the car that made the brakes not work- brake booster. dealership said t would be replaced. they called next day to tell us it would not be replaced due to an expired warranty. and to call chrysler 800 hotline. it got us nowhere. the rep refused to put a manager in the phone indicating they will call me back after their 1 day policy. and that my car was already fixed and that i should pay for it and they might reimburse me for it in 3-5 business days. chrysler is refusing to pay for that recalled part.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. shortly after the vehicle received a brake booster repair, the contact experienced brake failure. while pulling into the driveway and attempting to apply the brakes, the vehicle failed to stop. the contact had to turn off the vehicle to prevent the vehicle from moving any further. the contact had the vehicle towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake booster failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 57,000.

On 8-4-16 i was operating my 2012 jeep grand cherokee in a paring lot dropping off some people. after putting the vehicle back into drive and moving forward, i was unable to stop the vehicle. when i stepped on the brake petal, i could hear a sound of "air" which seemed to be escaping from somewhere. fortunately the parking lot was empty and i coasted to a stop. i had zero brake function! there was absolutely no warning that this issue was about to occur, and no type of "service engine or brake" light went on. my family and i are very fortunate that we were not on the highway at high speeds when this brake system failed for no apparent reason. note that a year or so ago i had this vehicle serviced at my local jeep dealer for a government recall on the brake system. it is my understanding that it was a hydraulic booster under nhtsa # 14v154000. i had my vehicle towed into a different jeep dealer for this issue. they repaired it under the "booster" recall. my invoice mentions that they tested and replaced the brake booster due to corrosion. i am extremely concerned for the safety of anyone driving a 2012 jeep grand cherokee! the problem was allegedly fixed once, but had to be fixed a second time. this is an extremely dangerous situation that must be corrected immediately on all like vehicles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. when the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle was shifted from park to drive, the vehicle rolled away while the brake pedal was depressed without warning. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 14v154000 (service brakes, hydraulic), but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the service brake and hydraulic system failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was 27,300.

On june 24, 2016, between 1:30 pm and 2 pm, i was driving from brentwood ca to vallejo ca on hwy 780 w and after turning a curve on the freeway which sloped down towards curtola parkway, i applied the brakes at about 30 miles per hour after i emerged from the overpass which was at least 5 car lengths before the cars ahead of me which was stopped at a red traffic light. however, the jeep continued to roll even though i pressed on the brakes to the floor board. when i realized the jeep did not stop, after checking for vehicles on the left from the rear view mirror, i swerved to the left to avoid hitting the truck in front of me, but i still hit the left corner of the nissan truck in front of me but the truck did not hit the vehicle in front of him. i damaged the right corner of the front of my jeep. the jeep is unsafe because the brakes failed and would have caused a fatal accident to me, my three passengers, and other vehicles had i been travelling at a high speed. i complied with all available recall repairs including the brake recall in 2014 and all the suggested chrysler maintenance on the jeep. i reported the accident to my insurance geico and to chrysler.

Break booster recall - 6/3/2016 - my 2012 jeep grand cherokee could not be stopped. while driving, as i attempted to stop the vehicle, i noticed the break pedal was much harder than usual. when i pressed the break pedal, air was escaping from the break pedal and the car could not be stopped. i had to use the emergency break to stop the vehicle all the way back to the dealership. i managed to drive the car to the dealership and tried not to crash the car or hurt myself or someone else. after speaking to the dealership, i was informed there was a recall on the vehicle back in 2014 which the "fixed". however, the issue was not resolved because the recall issue happened again today.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v154000 (service brakes, service brakes, hydraulic). while driving 50 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but it took the vehicle longer to come to a complete halt. the emergency brake warning light illuminated. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the vehicle was towed to a dealer who confirmed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was also included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v879000 (electrical system, interior lighting); however, the part needed to repair the vehicle was unavailable. the failure mileage was 79,000. vin tool confirms parts not available.

About a month after purchasing my used jeep, i was coming to a stop on a city street and my jeep powered off completely. after taking the jeep in to the dealership they fixed the fuel pump relay, which was recalled ,and sent me on my way. since then my jeep has powered off 5 times (once while entering the highway, twice while exiting the highway, once while making a u-turn under the highway and once on a city street) each time while braking. i've had no power brakes or steering each time.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while operating the vehicle, the brake sensor light illuminated off and on and the brake pedal felt spongy when depressed. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that a leak was present in the brake booster and the booster would need to be replaced. the contact was informed that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 14v1540000(service brakes). a water diverted shield was installed, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 78,400.

I experienced a loss of brakes on my grand cherokee. i pushed the pedal to the floor and could hear air escaping, but i had very little brake. i had to push exceedingly hard to stop the vehicle. fortunately, i was not driving in heavy traffic and could get to my local garage. at the garage i was told the booster needed replaced as it had failed.since we had the safety recall done in december 2014 it seemed strange that the brake booster failed. after reading other complaints, it appears that jeep is aware of the issue and that the recall did not solve the problem. fortunately, i was not in a serious accident....updated 02/22/17 *bf *tr

My brakes stopped working while stopped at a stop light. the brake pedal kicked back and forced my foot upwards. i was at that point no longer able to depress the brake pedal. i started crawling forward and when the light turned green slowly accelerated to a parking lot. i had to press on the brakes as hard as i was able and slowly came to a stop. there was extreme resistance to depressing the pedal and a grinding/hissing noise coming from engine compartment. it also sounded like the brakes were grinding at the wheels. i was lucky to be at a stop light and not traveling at high speed with my children. the vehicle was towed to dealership and they are diagnosing.

I currently have the 2012 jeep grand cherokee and over the years, my vehicle has had a total of (7) recalls. recalls: brakes, electrical, etc. the most recent recall stated that the vehicle could stall with the risk of a crash! upon receiving my notification letter, i made an appointment with the anticipation that the repairs would only take 1 ' 2 business days. unfortunately, the repair time was approximately 1 week through the weekend. i would like to express my un-satisfaction with the service at the chrysler group llc (chrysler) and at this time would like to escalate my concern as a complaint. i would like someone from the corporate office such a manager and/or director to contact me and explain why my issue can't be resolved. i would also like to register my complaint with bbb. i have attempted to contact chrysler group llc (chrysler) on many occasions to resolve my issue. i have purchased and leased several vehicles from chrysler over the years, and now i am very disappointed with the response i received to settle my claim for rental car reimbursement.

The brake booster failed while driving in city traffic and while braking for a traffic light, without warning and without appearance of the brake warning light on the dash. the brake booster recall 14v-154 was accomplished approx. 4 months prior.
