We have classified the 84 complaints from 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee about STEERING into the following categories.
My jeep all of a sudden stalled right before a sharp corner causing panic and loss of control of the vehicle. my family is scarred and my wife does not trust driving the vehicle especially after not even a week later we received a recall letter stating vehicle can stall but there's no solution!!!! when the jeep stalled i drove into a ditch unable to over power the all of a sudden tight steering and now i have suspension problems!
Sound coming from steering column when turning. dealer diagnostic identified a failing steering rack and pinions. need to replace.
While slowing down to make sharp turns the vehicle will spontaneously shut off causing the power steering and breaking to not work. there are no error codes that come up and the radio and air/heat continue to work. the only reason you know the car shut off is because the breaks and power steering won't work. this has happened multiple times but you can never recreate the problem on cue. it just happens randomly without warning. this has happened both coming off the highway ramp around a turn and on a normal back road street going around a turn. the last time this happened was 11-13-2019
Power steering lines leaked at 80k ( january 2019 dealer repaired ) now 7 months later (august 2019) both lines are leaking again.. it's going in on the 19th for repair but someone told me their is a huge fire hazard with this fluid leaking and has caused major car fires and steering failure. is there or was there a recall at some point with the 2012 grand cherokee to fix this issue permanently ?i bought this truck in 2017 so i'm unaware of a recall about the power steering issues. my jeep was serviced at lagers of mankato mn ..
I recently purchased this vehicle and it completely shuts off unexpectedly. when it does it affects both the braking and the steering. the first time i was stopped at a light and was an easy fix but the 2nd time i was getting off an exit around 50 mph. i have young children and now i am scared to drive them around in it. i know in not the only one this is happens, there's complaints all over the internet. there should be a recall before someone dies.
The first time my power steering when out i had stopped to do something. got back in my jeep and thought i had a flat because it was so hard to turn the wheel. got out to look and everything was fine. got back in, drove it around a neighborhood street and steering returned to normal. had a mechanic top off the power steering fluid and was fine for months. yesterday was leaving to got to the store and just before i got out onto a busy hwy the power steering stopped working. this time i could not budge it. i call my mechanic friend. by the time he got there the steering was normal again. he checked the level and was fine. if i had gotten out onto the hwy and this happened i would have been a sitting duck. this is a 2012 jeep grand cherokee with 80,000 miles on it.
My vehicle has decided to start bogging around 35mph. it has continually done this for a week and has decided to start driving horrible. it does not drive like it has been. we are going to check what the problem might be sunday (7/7/2019) and attempt to fix. my jeep is no longer covered under warranty.
Engine stalls for no reason under braking and deceleration. happens more often when braking and turning. loss of power steering when it happens. does not happen frequently , more often in the cold when the car has been started. cant replicate it when car is hot. dangerous when it has happened on exit ramps as car has to be controlled with no power steering and car has to come to a complete stop, put in park where it has always restarted. people behind me not happy when stopping on exit ramps. have brought to dealer after it has happened and the car has not thrown any codes. there is not real pattern to this stalling, but, having to stop the car to restart it posses a danger of getting rear ended. happens at speeds between 30 to 60. happens most frequently in rotaries (roundabouts) when slowing down to enter.
Hello, i am the original owner of a garage kept 2012 jeep grand cherokee overland 5.7 with 73000 miles. on 1 april 2019 the power steering rack went bad. other jeeps have had the same problem, but no recall. the vehicle was moving and turning. this is not a good thing for such a high end jeep product. very costly repair. please advise. (xxxxx) parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact heard an abnormal noise when the steering wheel was turned in either direction. the contact was concerned that the steering could seize without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the dealer was not contacted. the failure mileage was not available.
I was advised during an oil change that power steering rack and pinion assembly needs to be replaced due to leaking fluid. the nhtsa database is filled with similar complaints about this defective part. with 10 recalls already on this vehicle, please investigate to determine whether a recall is warranted for this issue as well. thank you.
The rack and pinion steering is leaking at 75,000 miles. after being qouted 2600 dollars for the fix, i did research and found that most other jeep owners are experiencing this problem in low mileage jeeps also. contacted jeep with no response. the issue has been noted to cause the jeeps to become unresponsive and dangerous as steering becomes useless.
Vehicle loses all power when slowing down or stopped. lose ability to steer. have to restart the vehicle.
When slowing the vehicle it will just silently shuts off. this happens usually at the same 5 places, 3 of them when slowing to make a right hand turn in an s turn and the other 2 going straight slowing to stop to make a left turn across traffic. i feel like it's a combination of braking, steering wheel and when its shifting into 1st since i'm either in a stopping situation or s turn situation. when this happens i loose steering and brakes causing me to go into the opposite lane of travel head on. there have been recalls on the alternator for my vehicle but mine has never been included. there has been a recall for a sensor that has been completed but did not solve the problem. this is a serious issue, my chance for a head on collision is very very scary. this happens about 6-10 times a week.
4 times in the last 3 weeks, the last time just today, as i was decelerating and turning right while getting off highways onto exit ramps, the steering wheel felt like it locked - the power steering turned off, as did the power brakes - i had to coast, and the rpms showed 0, although all the lights were still on. i was forced to put the car in park - while still on the exit ramp - turn off the car and turn it on again to get it to drive normally. which it did, as if nothing had happened. but it's unnerving and certainly unsafe, and a quick search on the internet reveals it seems to happen quite frequently to other jeep grand cherokee 2012 drivers.
Rack and pinion sterling defect need to be replaced 12500 miles only on car
I have owned this vehicle for 3 years, and in that time it has randomly lost all power while driving 5 different times, making it hard to turn off the road. i have to pull over and restart the vehicle. there is no warning, it just dies. i am not finding a recall concerning this, but there should be. i have read several other complaints about the same issue.
2012 jeep has 55k miles, original owner. took to the dealership for an oil change and a couple recalls, to be informed the steer rack is leaking, along with a bent tie rod, cost to fix is $2000.
Vehicle has less than 60,000 miles and was informed that power steering resivoir is low due to a leak in the boot of the rack and pinion steering assembly. cost of repair would be approximately $2000. this part should last much longer than 60,000 miles. driven very lightly as only 60,000 miles in 6 years to start having such issues.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 40 mph, the power steering failed and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. upon inspection, the owner discovered that the power steering fluid leaked from the power steering pump. one step auto chrysler of fort walton (541 mary esther cut off, fort walton beach, fl) was notified of the failure. the manufacturer was not notified. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 120,000.
While braking to take a right turn (braking from ~40mph to 15mph) power steering was lost. fought the car around the turn, then pressed the accelerator, nothing happened. looked at the tachometer and it shows 0rpm, tried to brake further and now have no brakes. coast to a stop. no warning lights showed. all electronics were functioning normally. placed car in park then started as normal. model year is 2012z has 130000 miles. this has never happened before. no indication whatsoever of any problem previously
Vehicle randomly shuts off while driving. no indications of problem as far as warnings. loses all engine power, power steering, power brakes. happens when slowing. once shifted to neutral or park, it will restart without issue. intermittent dangerous problem. no faults active, no diagnosis to be found. vehicle is up to date on recalls as far as we can tell. concerns for safety are present. vehicle currently has 128929 miles, but this has happened 3-4 times a year randomly since we purchased it at 33k in 2014.
We loaded up to go to the desert (clear summer day with temperatures near 80 degrees fahrenheit), stopped to get gas and ice (jeep was running the entire time) and once we got on the way there, the battery light came on, then an odd sound was heard then whitish electrical smelling smoke started pouring out of the engine compartment, this happened within 8 - 10 seconds total). i grabbed my extinguisher and popped the hood and saw that the smoke appeared to be coming from around the alternator and steam was everywhere. i also noticed that the motor was overheated (but no temperature light and no fans were turning). we turned around and made it the 3 blocks back to the house when the jeep died and without power steering and brakes we almost collided with a parked car. we parked it in the middle of the street to cool off and to obtain assistance to push it into my garage. it was found that my alternator had a diode that shorted to ground. please actually read the following: there are at least 38 other complaints concerning the same chain of events on nhtsa website. alt shorts, destroys the battery, and tipm/pcm. fca refuses to expand 1 of 3 open recalls to include my make/model and many others. nhtsa refuses to actually hold jeep/fca accountable. check p60-14v634 (alternator had bad diodes and shorted to ground) expanded multiple times, t36-17v435 (alternator had bad diodes and shorted to ground)expanded multiple times, t75-17v741 (alternator had bad diodes and shorted to ground). the data in nhtsa data shows that from years 2007 to 2018, fca us, llc models badged 2012 had the highest percent of total recalls of any year owning 18% of the 24,053,941 total recalls fca family had. how does this not flag the nhtsa to fight for us? the nhtsa fined fca 120,000,000 for their addmitted unefectual recall process. i have so much more data. sad.
On april 16, 2018, i took my car into the glendale chrysler jeep dodge dealership in glendale, mo, to obtain the alternator diode thermal fatigue recall replacement. during their inspection, i was notified that i also needed to replace the rack and pinion power steering module due to leaking fluid for $2300.00. this item is connected to the recall of the alternator diode thermal fatigue problem. in addition, i was notified by the inspector that i had to replace the right rear shocks, also due to broken seals and leaking fluid. this car obviously is experiencing systemic failures, for which jeep should be held responsible, since the car has only been driven by myself and has only 46,000 miles on it. these core items should last at least 100,000 miles. i have found that the dealership is charging me almost twice the going rate for replacing these items, and this is quite upsetting. i have found information on the internet that there are many similar complaints about these electrical failures, and feel strongly that your organization should issue a recall re the rack and pinion power steering module as soon as possible. this is a very dangerous failure and should be jeep's responsibility. my car has had regular service check-ups, the last one being on december 9, 2017, to obtain the brake booster water shield recall replacement - another failure. between december 9 and april 16, the car was not driven more than a few hundred miles, and always garaged and clean. no accidents in its history. and yet, its electrical system seems to be disintegrating. i feel my life is in danger in this car, and i obviously cannot sell it without these items being fixed, harming me further financially. please act on this complaint as soon as possible.
I was driving down an off ramp towards a right turn at about 20-30 mph . i attempted to make the right turn and brake pedal was very hard , gas pedal wasn't responding and steering wheel locked up(no turning) . the jeep slowed and nearly hit parked cars since brakes and steering were not working . when jeep finally stopped , i shifted into park and pushed ignition off button . i waited a few moments then pushed start button and it started up with no check engine light or service message . i believe altinator or tipm failed while i was driving . i don't believe my vehicle qualified for t37 altinator recall or tipm recall that was issued . i don't wanna put my 2 year old son in this jeep anymore , he deserves better than that . 2012 grand cherokee 5.7 altitude with only 28000 miles . i don't feel safe driving this jeep anymore until issue is resolved .
2012 jeep grand cherokee. consumer writes in regards to vehicle brake booster recall repairs. *smd consumer sent additional correspondence. *ld the consumer stated on 02/15/2018 the vehicle stalled without warning making the vehicle inoperable. the dealerships resolution was replacing the electro-hydrualic power steering and the amp alternator per recall. *tr
Engine randomly stalls for no reason while in motion, leaving the car coasting with no power brakes or power steering. once the car is brought to a stop, it will start back up and continue driving as if nothing was wrong. internet searches reveal that it is a common problem afflicting these models with no clear solution.
This is not the first time this has happened owned car since oct 17 the engine stalls in the middle of driving has happened 6 times. a near miss twice of hitting a tree. you loss power steering when this happens. took to dealer and they cant find anything wrong. taking it back tomorrow 2/1/18 to do a diagnostic test and keep the car until it does it. very dangerous to drive! jeep do something about it! listen to the complaints on the internet! seems very common practice for jeep
Rack and pinion leaking power steering fluid in cold weather
Car started smoking, lights began flashing, wipers turned on lost all starring and car than died.
Power steering became jerky and power assist would come and go while driving. we brought to jeep dealer and they said only cure was to replace rack and pump at cost of $3,000.
33k milage took my jeep in to get the routine oil change, the shop found the rack and pinion assembly was completely broke and the front struts were completely blown out at 33k miles this should not happen. the repairs cost $3,700.00. if jeep knows there was a problem in 2012 they should have taken care of it. betty / thornton, colorado
Dealership related the found steering gear had no fluid, it was leaking and needed to be replaced. we park the car in the garage and have no leaks on the floor. where is all this leaking fluid going?
As i was driving my a/c stopped blowing cold air. battery light came on then all the dash indicators started blinking wrong including my seat belt indicator, radio shut off, etc. car drove as if it had little power then steering jerked as if car was going to shut down. pulled over and turned off car and car would not restart. took to the mechanic who confirmed is the alternator. vehicle only hs 60k miles.
Jeep stalls suddenly while driving with no indication other than the loss of power steering. this occurs repeatedly at different speeds ranging from 15 mph in the city to 60 mph on the highway. stalling has occurred when slowing down and also while turning.
Power steering fluid leaking; according to dealer, power steering fluid is highly flammable and may cause a fire forcing me to pay the $1,600 for a new steering rack. 2012 jeep grand cherokee, 26k miles.
Have contacted dealer numerous times to address two recalls. they state still waiting for parts. have been waiting more than one year to have these recalls addressed.
Front rack and pinion steering boot leaking. car bought new and has 59,000 miles. on line reports many other vehicles with same problem. safety issue found on yearly inspection.
Driving at highway speeds, 55 to 70 mph the steering wheel will violently shake back and forth and the car will jerk from left to right. i took the vehicle to the dealership and was informed the power steering rack and pinion would need complete replacement. the estimate with a new 4 wheel alignment is over 1900 dollars. this jeep is driven by my wife, has never been off road and has only 33,000 miles on it. a service technician told me this is a very common problem and they see many jeeps where the rack needs replacement. i called two other dealerships and was told this is a problem area on 2012 grand cherokees. i was also told they redesigned the rack a couple of years ago because of this problem. this repair should be covered and recalled as a dangerous manufacturing defect.
Rack and pinion is leaking power steering fluid. a crack in the seal has developed in the rack on the front passenger side. the vehicle has never had any other issues like this before. also the computer has not indicated low power steering fluid but the mechanic told me it was low. the vehicle was not driven recklessly or off road that would cause a crack like this. there is no simple fix for this other than a $1300+ repair for an issue that is a defect. i have had 2 mechanics and the dealership look at the issue and give me quotes. i discovered this in january.
In the 18 months i have owned the vehicle it has randomly turned off 5-6 times on the highway or on a street. the engine turns off (with no warning on the dash) and you lose power steering and braking. i have taken it to the dealership twice in the last two months and they are not able to diagnose. i am picking up the car tomorrow from the dealership that has had it for the past six days. they will be releasing me an unsafe car that i will not allow my daughter or wife to drive.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at 5 mph, the steering wheel seized as the power steering warning light illuminated. the vehicle was towed to a dealer and was diagnosed that the power steering component failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 78,000.
While driving on the highway the jeep jolted/ jumped to the side when we drove over mildly unevenly paved roads or overpasses causing us to lose control of our vehicle momentarily. we were at 65 mph and the jeep rocked a few times upon attempting to stabilize. this has happened numerous times and our last incident almost threw us into the side of a semi. the dealer cannot explain this and we have had new tires and an alignment done without any improvement. if we keep this car i know beyond a doubt that this situation will be the cause of a serious accident / fatality. there is 70,000 miles on this jeep. *tr
I was driving down a busy road in our town today. the battery light came on. approximately 10 minutes later while still driving, the lights on dash started flashing on and off, seatbelt alarm started going off, windshield wipers started working without turning on. the radio turned off. i lost power steering. the vehicle shut off while still driving down the road. i had no power breaks--seemed to almost stop working. i was fortunate to get on side of road in grass to keep from getting hit by another car. if there had not been a grassy area there would have been an accident. the vehicle then was completely shut down--door locks would not work- tried to put key fob in ignition and could not get it back out--was unable to get back gate opened. i had to have car towed to dealership where i was told it was the alternator which in turned destroyed the gel type battery. i was also informed this was not covered under the alternator recall due to not matching my vin number. i was first quoted $2,000 to cover the damage. i am very upset due to the fact that there could have been a serious car accident today. i am thankful my child was not in the car with me. i think it is terrible that the recall does not include the alternator in this 2012 grand jeep cherokee when the description of what "could" happen did happen to me today. i feel that chrysler/jeep should cover this damage in the recall of the alternator. *tr
2012 jeep grand cherokee power steering is whining loudly while idling and in motion fluid is being lost.. occasional vibration in steering system when cornering.
In 2016, my 2012 jeep grand cherokee laredo had about 38k miles when i found out that my vehicles rack and pinion had a "minor leak" that they service center recommended i "keep an eye on." this was something i really needed to save for because it would cost $3000 to repair and i had just purchased the vehicle! less than a week later i was in an accident because i lost power steering while driving with my family. this forced me to replace the rack and pinion as well as further damage. this is pretty unusual for a car with mileage that low. additionally, it is ridiculous that this issue hasn't been a sufficient impetus for investigation considering how ubiquitous that exact claim is among jgcl owners. these common claims suggest that the issue isnt caused by the driver, but is in fact, a manufacturers defect. appropriately, the manufacturer is obligated to remedy this defect.. the consumer stated the alternator failed and caused a fire. the consumer requested to be reimbursed for the repairs as the vehicle exhibited the failure described in a recall. *js *js*dt*jb
I am losing power steering fluid on my 2012 jeep grand cherokee - there is a leak somewhere in the steering. i have only 40,k miles on this vehicle. there have been many complaints on this and is obviously a defect in the steering system - chrysler should recall and repair this problem.
My steering will at various times, shake will driving, sometimes violently. the shaking gets worse if i apply the brakes. this is an off and on problem and does not occur everyday. it mostly occurs at highway speeds (55 mph+) i have video of this occurring available for viewing.(mp4 format) i have been to the jeep dealer (thompson chrysler dodge jeep in edgewood maryland) 3 times (have shown them the video) in the last year trying to get this corrected, but they can't figure out what's wrong. i'm afraid that this problem will one day cause me to have an accident where i will not be able to control the steering while driving.
When slowing down or coming to a stop, the vehicle's engine will turn off and power steering will not work. in order to start the vehicle again, i need to completely stop, put it in park and start the engine. this has happened on the street and freeway. it does not happen constantly. i have had times where it happens 2 days in a row, once a week, and once a month. i have taken the vehicle to a dealer a few times already, but they have not been able figure out what the issue is. after having the vehicle at the dealer for over 1 month, i spoke to a senior technician that works at the dealer and he said it is a known issue. he told me that vehicles with the 5.7l engine and the push to start button have been having this issue and the issue starts around 30,000 to 50,000 miles and they are not sure what is causing the problem or how to fix it.
