Problems with 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

My 2012 jeep grand cherokee stalls without warning for months now. now it is starting to hard start or not start at all and continues to stall when i am driving. i have been to the dealership 10+ times and they have found "nothing wrong" but have attempted to fix other problems that i have had to pay for that have still not fixed the problem. it has not been able to be recreated even though they have kept it for a week multiple times and put hundreds of additional miles on it. this is a serious accident and health issue when i am driving on the street or highway from 25/35+ mph and all of a sudden it just stalls and there is not power stearing or control at all. it also "jerks" sometimes when i push on the gas when accelerating. there has been a recall regarding some 2012 jeep grand cherokees but they say not mine. if i have continuously have this issue, why is mine not recalled as well??? i do understand that vehicle recalls are vin specific although the manufacturer could have placed a defect part into mine also. i have asked for a monitor to be placed on my vehicle to "get the codes if possible when it stalls" but have been told "no" 2+ times from the dealer. i do not have another vehicle to use when ever i need and have had to wait up to 2 weeks to get it to the dealer due to dealer rental availability.

While driving maybe 30mph, i attempted to make a left turn when my jeep immediately went dead (no lights sound or anything else) and the steering wheel locked up. i was able to move the steering wheel just enough to coast to the side of the road but couldn't straighten it due to the steering wheel not turning and car completely dying. i attended to jump it , but it wouldn't start even after being connected for 20+ minutes. when taken off the jumper cables, it would immediately die again. during this time, the windshield wipers would start without moving without me touching them. i had to have it towed to my house and the tow truck was also unable to start it or put it in neutral to get it on the truck . after a couple hours, i was able to jump start it with my portable jumper but it died completely after it was sitting for a couple minutes. now being told it's electrical problems that caused this . i noticed another recall with similar problems but apparently mine has yet to be included in this recall of the alternator/electrical

Recall of "alternator diode thermal fatigue does not have available parts to correct. since this condition causes unexpected vehicle stall causing risk of crash and/or overheating with smoke and/or fire." i cannot drive this vehicle in this condition nor can i risk having passengers with me, my elder parents, my grandchildren and/or myself. i should be supplied a rental vehicle and should not have to simply "wait" for a solution. if i am not going to be "safe" then they should buy it back from me. i purchased this vehicle new from jeep.

8/18/17 i was provided with recall notices during my annual inspection. i purchased this vehicle used and this was the 1st inspection i had to do & 1st i was notified of recalls. 9/5/17 started jeep and began to leave driveway, it made funny noise, i shut it off and turned it back on and battery light came on. i parked it back in it's spot and shut it off. smoke came from hood. i opened hood and watched alternator emit smoke for approximately 10 min before shutting hood. 9/5 called midstate chryslter in berlin, vt. they confirmed alternator is recall item t36 but chrysler hasn't authorized fix. called 1-800-853-1403 fca recall assistance center and spoke w/ shea who confirmed this and said i had to open a "case" and could expect a call within 24-hours. requested rental call but was told had to wait for call back. was told not to touch jeep until inspection done. 9/7 called fca recall, spoke w/ renee who confirmed case #32345945 but said to give it more time for a call back from a specialist. again requested rental but was told to wait for call. 9/8 called fca recall, spoke w/ jordan who said case wasn't opened properly, he fixed and give it 2-3 days for call back. again, waiting for answer on rental car. 9/11 called fca recall, pam, still need to wait, again requested rental car. 9/12 james from "3rd party" called indicating i'll be getting a call from an inspector to come inspect the jeep. request rental but he is 3rd party and couldn't help. 9/12 called fca recall, james, patricia & katrina, to request rental, said to expect a call in 2-3 days! 9/12 received call from mike, 3rd party, who will have my car towed to dealership for inspection by him on 9/18 and then back home, it can not stay at dealership, must be towed back and he submits report to jeep. still without transportation & do not want my car towed several times unnecessarily,just want it fixed!

While on a nearby highway the vehicle stalled out on me. i was able to get into shoulder and after, immediately after stalling out i attempted to start the car right away, it took about 4 attempts for vehicle to start up again. took vehicle to the dealership they first diagnosed it being an issue with the key fob battery after being replaced the vehicle ran for about a week then the original problem reoccurred. this time in town in the middle of an intersection. vehicle was not able to start and had to get vehicle towed. after taking it bake to the dealer they informed me that there was an issue with the primary and secondary fuel pumps.

Jeep recall. i was notified of a recall of the alternator in august of 2017. since then the dealers have refused to replace it because replacement parts were not available. the recall stated that a total power failure could result in serious injury. i drive high speed freeways and interstate highways frequently and am very concerned for my family, grandchildren, and myself. please help.

My car turns off while driving differnt times of the day could be in the morning or could be during the day. it just shuts off with no sign the lights are on in the front the radio is still on its happened several times. some times does not want to start randomly... this is my 3rd time taking it into the dealer with this same issue and they keep saying nothing is wrong with it. this last time i was on the freeway and it just shut off. i just want them to repair it. the fist time i took it in i want to say i was under the warranty miles around 34 or 36000 i am going to confirm with the dealer.

Complete electrical power failure while driving on the highway 70 mph..no pcm as per the mechanic fried. battery and pcm needed to be replaced. the alternator, as per recall replaced.but stated pcm and battery were unrelated. cost to replace pcm 912 dollars , new battery 300 dollars. not including costs for towing. very dangerous situation not having power in the middle of a busy interstate 476.

While driving the the interstate my battery light went on a few minutes later an image of a lightning bolt hit the battery and i lost complete power. took it to the jeep dealership took over a week to tell me its the pcm and that it had nothing to do with the alternator. today i can pick up the car. they dated that i can pick up the car and then they told me my battery is very very week . they also assured me that one things has nothing to do with the other which is total bull,.

My jeep just caught fire coming from the sun roof. it started smoking fast and then quick fire coming down from the sun roof. the vehicle was in motion while it started smoking. i parked it and then the flames started coming out fast and hard.*bf the consumer stated the insurance company determined the fire may have been caused by work done at a local body shop resulting in a wiring short. the insurance company filed recovery documents against the company. the vehicle was totaled.*js *tr

The alternator went out when the vehicle was on a mountain road creating a very unsafe situation. the vehicle stopped dead without any warning. this resulted in replacement of the alternator, battery and the computer chip. total of $2,000 plus towing. this vehicle has a 180 amp alternator and the same year and vehicle with a 160 amp alternator currently has a recall but for some crazy reason the 180 amp alternator has not been recalled. the recall should be extended to the 180 amp alternator.

Vechile does not start. engine stalling and electrical warning light turns on. the vehicle was parked.

Was driving the car fine on the highway at 50 mph. the lights flickered and an emergency repair notice flashed on the dash. at that point, an air suspension warning light and other lights came on. the car went dead suddenly, no lights, no nothing. complete loss of electricity. when i stopped i could smell smoke. was able to safely get out of the car and had it towed to the dealer. dealer says the alternator is dead and possibly the pcm (drive train computer) is dead. total repairs for 2300.00. they issued a safety recall for these alternators but because there is no open recall for my car, the dealer is not budging. there should be a recall for all the alternators 160 and 180. my infant son was in the back seat when the car died. this is unacceptable.

Was driving and arrived at destination ,every thing was perfectly fine exited the vehicle and was gone for about 30 min. on return found vehicle completely without any electrical power had to be towed and found out alternator shorted out frying the battery as well as computer .i was informed that there are grand cherokees being recalled for this problem but it doesn't seem to affect my vin number even though i have experienced this very problem

I started the jeep and was headed home on the city street i had only driven .5 miles and it began to make a loud whistling sound as i pulled into my street. then the jeep began to shake and drive very rough. i parked, turned off the car and smelled smoke when i opened the hood the alternator was smoking, it smelled so bad and took over 20 minutes to get it to cool down and keep it from catching fire. i have lost all power in the jeep.

Smelled smoke using a/c, battery light went on, took to dealer, 180 amp alternator burned out, also caused burn out of battery. car just died, shut down, on road. dealer replaced battery and alternator. my alternator not apparently part of original 160 amp recall so it was not covered. $980 repair bill. car had 62,000 mi., always service at dealer. there are hundreds of similar incidents on internet, no recall for all these alternators? seems to be rather dangerous when car just shuts down while driving. my case was not life threatening.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v115000 (electrical system), for which the fuel pump relay was replaced. approximately two years after receiving the repair, the contact began to notice that the vehicle would crank, but failed to start. the contact would have to make several attempts to start the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to chrysler fullerton (located at 1044 us route 22, east summerville, nj, 08876; 908-722-2500) where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump relay failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that they were unable to provide another repair. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

While driving home from work during rush hour traffic on the highway, the red battery light came for the first time since i owned the vehicle. within minutes of the light appearing, the jeep's air conditioning went off, all warning lights appeared on the dashboard and the windshield wipers turned on (without prompting them). all three of these things happened within seconds of each other so i tried to pull over to the side of the highway but the jeep lost all power and stalled in the right lane of the highway. there was absolutely zero power so i was unable to turn my hazard lights on or put the car in neutral to roll to the breakdown lane (see attached picture). i then had to exit the jeep into oncoming rush hour traffic in the left lane and luckily made it safety to the shoulder where i called 911 and triple a for a tow. the jeep was towed to my local mechanic who said the alternator failed and that he had to unplug it from the battery since it was still producing excessive heat hours after it arrived there. i then called the fca customer service and referenced recall t36, since the exact same thing happened as the description provided (although i did not have any recalls on my vin). they put me in touch with the local jeep dealership to set up an appt so i paid for another tow there. the next day i receive a call from the service dept that my alternator failed, which drained my battery, which broke my module powertrain control computer totaling $2,134 in repairs. they cannot confirm nor deny that my jeep is part of recall t36, but regardless since my vin does not have any recalls on it, that i have to pay in full and that if down the road there is a recall that i will get reimbursed. i then call the fca customer service back and they check their internal system and confirm that i am not part of recall t36 and there are no outstanding recalls for my jeep.

After starting the vehicle, a loud whining noise came from what was determined to be the alternator. the alternator probably short circuited resulting in the destruction of the wiring system to include the vehicle computer system. a burning odor was noticed from the wiring system under the hood ( engine compartment). the entire electrical system failed requiring the vehicle to be towed to the nearest jeep dealer. this episode happened while the vehicle was in motion traveling approximately 1 mile. the vehicle was then parked with the distinct odor of burning. the vehicle is now at the jeep dealership awaiting diagnosis.

During my drive home from another town where i work approx 30 minutes away my alternator shorted out and blew out the battery. i was extra lucky and did not wreck but then when my husband got there to jump the vehicle it started the jumper cables completely on fire!!! we were able to get the fire out and get it to a parts store. the alternator is completely broken and who knows what else it burned while the alternator was burning up. you could smell burning wires even hours after the incident. when i contacted about the recall issue they said my jeep was not covered under the alternator recall taking effect august 24, 2017 yet my alternator did exactly what the effected alternators are doing the only difference was i was able to not wreck my vehicle. then it almost caused an even worse issue by starting things on fire and burning up who knows what else in the vehicle. why is my vehicle not included in this recall!!!??? i was driving on a small highway. i included a photo of the jumper cables after they were caught on fire.

The vehicle suddenly in a left turn lane at a intersection had the alternator light come on. the jeep then suddenly died and omitted a odor of something burning. the jeep would not budge at that point and was compliantly stuck with no power. i couldn't even push the vehicle out of the intersection because the wheels lock up, along with everything else. luckily it did not catch on fire, but i smelled smoke. i had people yelling and honking at me because i was in their way, they even yelled at the police officer there to help. the vehicle was taken to a licensed chyrsler dealer...from there it was diagnosis with a shorted out alternator, which also shorted out the computer and battery. the extended warranty covered the alternator and computer, but the battery was not covered. that is $247 to purchase the battery and the $100 extended insurance deductible. there is a recall p60 on this year jeep grand cherokee and dodge durango, but that is the 160 amp alternator, ours has the 180 amp. the problem i experienced was exactly what the recall was issued for. i believe my vehicle and others need to be recalled before they short out and catch on fire.

I have 4 recurring problems with my jeep. first, the driver's heated seats periodically will not work. second, upon starting my car, it will just stall or shut down. this happens 2 to 3 times a week. third, the check engine light continuously comes on and off (and when i get it checked, i am told something about the thermostat, but have had no problems with it overheating). finally, the cruise control on/off button will not work sometimes. i have to physically hit the steering wheel for it to work. i have read about tons of recalls for my year jeep, but my vin number is not included. i am starting to think it should be.

Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 17v435000 (electrical system); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. while driving, the contact heard an abnormal noise under the hood. after the gear shifter was placed in park, the contact smelled a burning odor throughout the vehicle. the next day, while attempting to start the vehicle, it failed to start and the battery indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to bertera chrysler jeep dodge ram (539 riverdale st, west springfield, ma 01089 (413) 734-4980) where it was diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. the manufacturer was notified of the issue and was not able to confirm when the parts were to become available. the manufacturer stated that the contact could pay for the repairs and then be reimbursed. the approximate failure mileage was 88,000. parts distribution disconnect.

As i was driving my a/c stopped blowing cold air. battery light came on then all the dash indicators started blinking wrong including my seat belt indicator, radio shut off, etc. car drove as if it had little power then steering jerked as if car was going to shut down. pulled over and turned off car and car would not restart. took to the mechanic who confirmed is the alternator. vehicle only hs 60k miles.

The alternator on our jeep had the same issue as the p60 recall for this model year and engine equipped with the 160 amp alternator. our vehicle has the 180 amp alternator and is not covered. my question/complaint is that if the chrysler warranty rep told me that she is seeing this issue more and more than why isn't the 180 amp alternator covered under the warranty also. the car was running perfectly fine and instantly started squealing very loudly and we could smell the electrical issue we are unsure of a fire issue but it looked like the alternator could have started something else..luckily we were able to pull the vehicle over and when i lifted the hood the alternator was pouring out smoke and had soot around the cooling fins. we returned to the vehicle 3 hours later and we could still smell the burnt wire smell. our dealer tried to jump start using a power pack and it instantly drained two power packs that can jump seams from a dead battery. our vehicle had to be towed to the dealer. now we are waiting to find out what our charged will be. as i said earlier, the chrysler warranty rep said that this is being reported more and more and she advised me to file a complaint hoping that a recall will be started due to the number of complaints they are seeing. is there anything i can do in the meantime while i spend 500$ on a tow and a alternator? thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).?*jb

Driving down hwy. for 10 minutes and battery light came on, short time later vehicle died. battery cables on jumper side hot, strong smell of burned rubber. battery and alternator very hot and could not be touched. seem to be direct ground on 180 amp alternator. had to replace battery and alternator just to get power back. now more checks needed on computer. same as p60 recall, however, chrysler tells me the 180 amp is not involved.

Sudden electrical system failure while driving in town over my lunch hour. warning light illuminated and was able to drive to a safe place to stop before the alternator started smoking. powdered extinguisher did not stop the smoke so had to call the fire department. their liquid flame retardant was able to cool the alternator and prevent the fire from spreading. jeep has a current recall for the 160 amp alternator, but i have the 180 amp alternator. i reported the issue to jeep and they were able to confirm that they haven't even started an investigation for this issue. this is the exact same failure as is described in the 160 amp alternator recall and the issue was fixed the same way, by replacing the alternator. please make jeep expand the recall before someone dies in a fire or accident due to this issue. if i was on the highway as i was over the holiday weekend we would not have been able to stop in a safe place as quickly and definitely would not have had a quick fire response!

When i was driving on the high way .my grand cherokee stalled then stopped.after a short time it started again and i drove it to the mopar service centre of the dealer. the dealer told me that the car was not recalled for detective alternator. so they will replace the alternator and drained battery at my expense and also charge for the labour cost. i find this very strange and unjustified. the car maybe was not recalled but the fault now is exactly what the recall was for . so how come they refuse to replace what was originally recalled. this is against the rules and regulations of nhtsa. please guide me.
