We have classified the 620 complaints from 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
The automatic charging system light came on 2 hours into driving north on the highway to wisconsin from chicago. there was no human action that correlated with the light coming on. it simply came on when going consistent speed on the highway in no traffic. i learned from the driver's manual that this most likely meant that the alternator had failed and i needed to get assistance immediately. i took the car into a repair shop on a thursday where it would remain for 10 days as things began to unfold. the employees of the repair shop could identify no fault in the alternator after thorough inspection and driving tests. the warning light had turned off. however, after it had been cleared of all inspection and turned on, there was an enormous failure in the car causing it to smoke. without warning, the alternator caused such a massive short that it not only failed itself, but also broke the car's engine computer. i come to find out that there was a recall by chrysler (t36) for this specific issue and included 2012 jeep grand cherokee's. i was never made aware of this recall but there is no question that this failure is specific to the manufacturing errors by chrysler jeep. there have been a total of 10 recalls on the 2012 jeep grand cherokee, 3 of which have been specific to this vehicle, and clearly, now a 4th. this could have been a been an incredibly dangerous situation and the failure by chrysler to notify me or include my vehicle in their recall is preposterous. i have documentation regarding repair and claims attached. more info and claim documents available upon request.

Wind shield wipers, over drive light and head lights on and can not turn off. signal lights and interior lights not working.
I have had multiple lights pop up on my dash, usually after it rains, but once for no reason. i will be driving anywhere from 20-65mph and the lights will just pop up. (abs, brake, and traction control lights) once i turn my jeep off and back on, it disappears. but when the lights are shown, my jeep drives a little differently.
Alternator and pcm was supposedly replaced in july 2017. however, i now have the same problem and it is worse. the battery light will come on initially then all of a sudden the windshield wipers start, radio will shut off and then the air conditioning suddenly started to blow out how air and it was blown at the feet. i tried rolling down the window but was unable to do so. this happened a few more times when under regular stress of driving on the highway!
I had a recall on alternator which i had recall on and didn't received a letter in the mail. so one day i was driving with my family and i smell smoke coming my hood which i thought my car was on fire so i pull over and got out the car and call road side service to tow my car to championship of decatur. they fix the recall on the alternator and didn't replace my battery which was low. they charge my battery and everything was fine so i pick my car up and when down the street for 4 miles and my car cut off again so i had to get to auto zone to get a battery. i have a new battery and alternator and my jeep is still no powering on. i do not feel safe driving my vehicle anymore i have a 1 year daughter and another baby due any day now. so how can we resole this issue its not safe having a electrical system problem.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 30 mph, smoke appeared from under the hood. the vehicle was towed to champion of decatur inc. After returning home from a 190 mile trip, during which we experienced no maintenance issues or warning lights, my wife and i parked our jeep in our underground garage. upon unpacking our car we could smell, what appeared to be, an electrical smell with a cloud of smoke forming around the car. we were forced to use the emergency key to reenter the car to inspect it for fire and to open the hood in order to check the electrical system. we observed the car for approximately ten minutes until the smoke cleared to ensure there was no lingering fire. the jeep was towed to an auto shop where they determined that the alternator had completely shorted out, thereby destroying the entire electrical system including the alternator, computer and battery. we consider ourselves very fortunate that this incident did not occur while we were driving on the interstate, or the chesapeake bay bridge which was on our route. we have since learned that chrysler had issued a recall for this alternator in 2017. however, we were never notified about the recall. we are concerned that this could happen to someone else on the highway while they are driving and could be devastating if they lose control of the car due to the loss of power, or worse, a fire. we are hoping to be reimbursed by chrysler for the cost of repair which totaled $2,900.
My car was recalled for the alternator problem and repaired. in the last couple of weeks the vehicle is making the same noises it did wh n the alternator failed.

We loaded up to go to the desert (clear summer day with temperatures near 80 degrees fahrenheit), stopped to get gas and ice (jeep was running the entire time) and once we got on the way there, the battery light came on, then an odd sound was heard then whitish electrical smelling smoke started pouring out of the engine compartment, this happened within 8 - 10 seconds total). i grabbed my extinguisher and popped the hood and saw that the smoke appeared to be coming from around the alternator and steam was everywhere. i also noticed that the motor was overheated (but no temperature light and no fans were turning). we turned around and made it the 3 blocks back to the house when the jeep died and without power steering and brakes we almost collided with a parked car. we parked it in the middle of the street to cool off and to obtain assistance to push it into my garage. it was found that my alternator had a diode that shorted to ground. please actually read the following: there are at least 38 other complaints concerning the same chain of events on nhtsa website. alt shorts, destroys the battery, and tipm/pcm. fca refuses to expand 1 of 3 open recalls to include my make/model and many others. nhtsa refuses to actually hold jeep/fca accountable. check p60-14v634 (alternator had bad diodes and shorted to ground) expanded multiple times, t36-17v435 (alternator had bad diodes and shorted to ground)expanded multiple times, t75-17v741 (alternator had bad diodes and shorted to ground). the data in nhtsa data shows that from years 2007 to 2018, fca us, llc models badged 2012 had the highest percent of total recalls of any year owning 18% of the 24,053,941 total recalls fca family had. how does this not flag the nhtsa to fight for us? the nhtsa fined fca 120,000,000 for their addmitted unefectual recall process. i have so much more data. sad.
The backup camera stopped working in all cases when the vehicle is in reverse.
The compass stopped working in all cases whether moving or not.
Car stalled after starting and backing out of driveway. has not been starting after until multiple attempts and stalling after starting. a few years ago it stalled in the middle of an intersection in pinellas park florida while my husband was driving 25 mph with our children. aaa thought it was a loose battery cable. car also has failed to start off an on over the last few yeara and various parts have been replaced yet problem persists and is now getting worse. now we are very concerned that the real cause of these persistent problems have gone undetected and we have a malfunctioning tipm.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced multiple failures, such as the four wheel drive and windshield wipers would activate independently, the traction control and engine indicators illuminated, and the key fob failed to start the engine. the contact replaced the vehicle battery herself; however, the failures persisted. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 118,000.
Hello, was hoping you could guide me. i have been having issues with my jeep shutting off while driving. i could be on the freeway at a light or exiting the freeway and it shuts off. this issue has been going since the end of 2016. i decided to take it to another dealer they now say they have found a problem, but now jeep is saying since i am over my miles they cannot cover the charges. can you please help? *tt *tr
This problem has happened quite a few times where the vehicle is parked we press the button to start the vehicle,it wont start. we have to take the button out start the vehicle with they key but on 3/18/18 the radio was on once we parked the car once the vehicle was started it took about 2 minutes for the radio to come on . it was also saying that the key battery was low funny thing is i just replaced the battery in the fob on 3/16/18. this is an intermittent problem i think jeep needs to take care of. from what i was reading it is the totally integrated control module(the computer) which can be very costly and apparently that part is on backorder. so there are quite a few jeep owners with this same problem. i have read that the vehicle can completely shut down at any speed and you lose power steering and brakes which is a huge safety problem.
I was driving down an off ramp towards a right turn at about 20-30 mph . i attempted to make the right turn and brake pedal was very hard , gas pedal wasn't responding and steering wheel locked up(no turning) . the jeep slowed and nearly hit parked cars since brakes and steering were not working . when jeep finally stopped , i shifted into park and pushed ignition off button . i waited a few moments then pushed start button and it started up with no check engine light or service message . i believe altinator or tipm failed while i was driving . i don't believe my vehicle qualified for t37 altinator recall or tipm recall that was issued . i don't wanna put my 2 year old son in this jeep anymore , he deserves better than that . 2012 grand cherokee 5.7 altitude with only 28000 miles . i don't feel safe driving this jeep anymore until issue is resolved .

Vehicle won;t start due to a tipm starter /fuel relay is this a recall.
When parked, i tried to lock car using key fob, which armed the alarm but did not lock the doors. i tried using master power lock on driver side door to lock it, but this didn't work either (none of the doors will lock). separately, after leaving this parked spot, i tried using the windshield washers while driving to clean the windshield, but the sprayers did not work. only the wiper blades activated. after a diagnostic test by repair shop, i'm told the totally integrated power module needs to be replaced.

A week ago my battery light came on in my car on my way home. luckily i was able to get home before it died. we drove my car to an independent mechanic that we always go to get it diagnosed. my mechanic said i made it just in time because when they went to start my vehicle it was completely dead. they diagnosed that i had a bad battery and replaced it. they also identified that the alternator was bad and said there was a recall on it (i never received a recall notice on this part though). my car was towed to a nearby chrysler dealership and they completed all the open recalls on it, including the alternator belt. then my car was towed back to my independent mechanic. after my mechanic ran my car for 20 minutes the car shut off and it was found that the powertrain control module shorted. i immediately called chrysler customer service to report the issue. it has been over a week and i have spoken to 5 different customer service agents. every single one has told me something different and a different process i have to follow. my car has been towed back to the dealership and just sitting there. it has been over a week since i have had my car. i just heard from a customer service agent today that the car has to be diagnosed by the dealership and they have to declare that the pcm is not working. i have no idea what will happen after that. i am really trying to get them to pay for this and not go through a reimbursement process because i don't have faith i will actually get reimbursed in the end. i am so disgusted with the treatment chrysler has given me. they obviously are trying everything to get out of paying this. well they picked the wrong person to mess with, i will not back down.
Made an appointment at autonation on i45 in spring, tx to clear up 3 recalls, one of which was the sun visor wiring cbxdp361ab. i dropped my car off at 845 am. i was informed my car would be completed @ 400pm. when i checked in with the service advisor i was informed my car was ready and to pick up the key from the cashier. i picked up the key and invoice from the cashier and one of the recalls said 'no work performed'. i found the service advisor who said she 'forgot' to tell me that the part was on backorder and she had no idea when the part would be in. that's unacceptable for a recall to occur and there's no answer to when the recall will be resolved.
Purchased used 2012 grand cherokee overland w/94637 miles on january 27 2018. on january 31 at 8:50am after driving two miles i came to a stop at a stop light and while waiting for light change the engine died. no warning lights - the only indication was rpm dropped to zero. put vehicle into park and restarted without a problem. continued driving for the remainder of 32 mile trip. again on february 2 2018 the same thing occurred while my wife was driving. she came to a full stop and while waiting for signal light to change the vehicle engine quit with no warning lights. on both occasions this was the first trip of the day in the early morning ambient temperature of 55 degrees on dry pavement on city streets. both times the vehicle was restarted without a prolem and the trip continued without interruption. vehicle is scheduled at folsom lake jeep dealer for investigation.
I want to make you aware that recall #17v-435 issued june 9, 2017 is still open. my jeep caught fire yesterday 1/31/18. why is taking so long to complete such a serious recall???? now the jeep dealer tells me that i need to pay for the tow and the $1000+ repair and then get reimbursed at a later date.--that is insane!!! please help. i can be reached at 480-812-5621

On dec 29, 2017 i made an appointment with world jeep in shrewsbury,nj to address 3 recalls on my 2012 grand cherokee. the appointment was made for 8:00 am on jan 3, 2018, the jeep service person confirmed that the needed parts were in stock. 1) sun visor wiring ' this was a recall on a recall r71' they confirmed parts were available and scheduled service i was advised that the car should be done by noon. when i had not heard by 4pm i called them - they stated that the service advisor would call back.. after 45 minutes (now 4:45 pm) i called again. again i was told i would receive a call shortly. about 15 minutes later (now 5pm) i received a call from the advisor that said 1) the brake booster water shield inspection was just being started 2) they had not done anything on the sun visor replacement and would not get it done today ! 3) i could pick up the car around 5:30 when they should be done with the inspection. i asked 'are you telling me that you've had the car for 9 hours and done nothing ?' she replied thats about it ! its out of my control. this was after they had the vehicle almost for 9 hours. had they informed me at dropoff of the fact that they could not perform the scheduled service i would have gladly rescheduled. instead i wasted a day waiting by the phone. to hear from them. so in summary i waited a day for them to compete a recall inspection that should have required at most an hour and i will now have to reschedule probably 2 more days for the remaining service recalls. this was my 3rd jeep but i would have to seriously reconsider if i should ever buy another one from this dealership or jeep. attached is the service sheet showing the drop off time (8:04am. promised time (9:30 am) actual delivery time 17:30). service 1) not performed 2) not required.
This vehicle is subject to a recall. it has been open for months. i have called the dealership to try and get the car fixed as it is a safety issue. they say that a replacement alternator is not available. i bought this car for my kids to drive and the fact that it could die during operation and has been recalled but can't be fixed is disconcerting. what are you doing to make jeep honor the recall and make the repairs?

The alternator has been whining for about 6 months and the battery light periodically illuminates. there is a recall on this issue but the part is on back order if i want the recall completed, they can have it changed tomorrow if i pay for it out of pocket. makes no sense when people's lives are at stake.

2012 jgc ,54k miles . i appear better off than some,as my jeep's only real issue ,at the moment, is that it cranks but wont start. disconnecting the battery and leaving it for an hour will re boot the tipm and car will start. dealership singularly unhelpful, and chrysler customer service declined to help. i can see why.

Occasionally when trying to start, the engine cranks but does not turn over. on 2nd or 3rd attempt it starts. concerned that this is related to fuel pump relay for which some vehicles have been recalled

Saturday while it was raining we were driving on the highway and all of a sudden our vehicle shut off, the breaks locked up. we were unable to put our hazards on and barely made it to the side of the shoulder, during this other cars were honking at us. we found out that our vehicle has a recall t36, while this isnt the only issue but there is no fix at this time till late february of 2018. the only repair that the dealership can do is put another faulty alternator our jeep. this is not the first time this happen. in 2015, this same exact thing happen except we were on a side street. at that time the recall was not known. so if replaced this would be the 3rd alternator put in our jeep. i do not feel safe driving it, and feel that chrysler should replace our vehicle if the part is not yet created. they would like to repair the vehicle by putting in a faulty alternator, which could possibly result in another issue. while i do not feel safe in the car, i do not feel safe driving it on the highway, luckily the car around me were aware of the surrounds because we could have cause a crash easily since the hazards didn't work.
I own a 2012 jeep grand cherokee vin: [xxx] for the past several months since purchase, the jeep has had issues starting and has stalled while driving at high rates of speed. this vehicle is not safe to currently drive and i am getting nowhere with the dealership (performance jeep: delaware, ohio https://www.mopar.com/en-us/my-vehicle/recalls/search.html when clicking on this link and entering the vin below it shows the recalls completed for our jeep. the 2nd .pdf attachment (attached) shows the tipm recall was completed on 2/24/15. our car is continuing to stall. ?the totally integrated power module (tipm) on your vehicle contains an internal fuel pump relay that could operate intermittently or fail without warning. an intermittent or failed fuel pump relay could cause the engine to stall while driving and cause a crash without warning. what your dealer will do... fca will repair your vehicle free of charge. your dealer will install an external fuel pump relay.? carfax attached. first, a chrysler dealer tried reprogramming the computer module and then had to replace it in 2013. prior to the february 2015 recall. (i assume what they identify as the engine/powertrain computer/module is the tipm module ?i.e., the totally integrated power module.) issue 1 in august 2015, they replaced the fuel pump relay (i.e., the recall work). 2nd issue then, in april 2016, they tried to reprogram the engine powertrain computer module again, and again failed and had to replace it. third issue we are now having issues with the vehicle: fourth issue, still not fixed after taking it to performance jeep on 3 occasions. there has been a class action law suit with a settlement. as i understand those terms, they include an extended warranty on fuel pump repairs for up to 7 years/70,000 miles. we are well under the 7 years/70,000 miles. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Bad integrated power module
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 20 mph, the battery indicator suddenly illuminated and a whining noise was heard coming from the engine area. also, a burning electrical odor and smoke were present under the hood. the vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the alternator failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the local dealer (brown jeep in patchogue, ny) and the manufacturer were notified in reference to the failure, but no assistance was offered. the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number 14v634000 (electrical system) although the failure was identical. the failure mileage was 103,000.
Every single one of the warning indicators mounted in the dash are going off alternately in rotation, front collision and blind spot warning no longer work either. my vehicle is subject to the following recall, the jeep, four months after the recall was an ounce, still hasn't supplied the needed replacement alternators specified in the recall: manufacturer recall numbert36 nhtsa recall number17v-435 recall statusrecall incomplete, remedy not yet available
On october 22, 2017 my car started to heat up and turn off on me. when i had it towed to the dealer they advised me that my alternator went bad as a result of a recall that the alternator had. the dealer told me that the recall part was not available and i would have to pay out of pocket for it and then get reimbursed. while the alternator got repaired the dealer contacted me letting me know that as a result of the alternator getting messed up it affected the powertrain control module. i contacted the fca and told them the issue and they reassured me that if the powertain module was affected as a result of the alternator that that would also be reimbursed. the customer sales rep also confirmed this to the service advisor of the dealership. now three months later i get a phone call that they will not be able to reimburse me for powertrain module because they have yet to receive the alternator piece and haven't looked into what the alternator could affect. how does one rep confirm that it is going to be covered and another rep turn around and deny my claim. had my alternator never blew my powertrain would have still worked properly. now how do i go about getting my money back.
Car started smoking, lights began flashing, wipers turned on lost all starring and car than died.
The car started out with intermittant locking and unlocking of doors, horn honking and side window unresponsiveness. it has graduated to daily intermittant ignition issues while stationary and stalling issues while stationary and in motion. i have been notified that it is a common problem with this make model and year with a bad tipm. i have also been norified that the recall has been denied and that the nhtsa doesnt think its dangerous for cars to randomly cut off and for airbags to randomly go off or not go off when needed. this isnt a common "wear and tear" issue and is dangerous, so i am disapointed in your findings.
