Vehicle engine shuts off if key fab is disturbed while driving. three times this has happen in the past year. all power is lost when this occurs. i removed items from key ring in an attempt to temporarily stop this situation until a recall is announced to fix this issue permanently. *js
Driving on the highway when my 2008 jeep grand cherokee shifted into neutral by itself. i was not quick to react and was almost killed in a multiple car pile-up. a large 18 wheel truck and two other cars left the roadway to avoid hitting me. i was completely helpless and could not get out of the way. i pulled over to call my dad, but he didn't answer. after about 15 minutes, i restarted the vehicle and it shifted into drive on the side of the highway. i drove it home on the access road. this has happened to me twice now. my 2008 jeep grand cherokee should be part of this recall --recall number: 13v175000. i called chrysler and they said they do not have any indication of why it is not. my case number with chrysler is [xxx}. please help me before i and several other people behind me are killed. i drive 30 miles to and from work down i-35 and i-40 in oklahoma city, these are two of the busiest roads which i drive this 2008 jeep grand cherokee 60 miles, monday through friday. my vehicle is unsafe by an already known defect chrysler has identified by recall number 13v175000, and yet they are stalling and failing to act. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *tt

I bought a new 2008 jeep grand cherokee straight from the dealer. in january/february 2013 i started experiencing intermittent instances of the vehicle powering down & stopping without any warning. i would be driving at 35mph, and out of nowhere the electrical would cease, the truck would seize up, power down and would come to a halt. i took the truck to the dealer on 6/27/13, had diagnostics run. the dealer's recommendation was to have a new keyfob unit installed. there was an internal defect found in the wireless control module. module on backorder, so alternate repair option given which included the installation and programming of a new remote starter unit which came with a new wireless control module and two new keyfobs. previous to this i also had a new battery & shocks put in to remedy the problem. to date, still having same issue and now the "malfunction indicator light" intermittently appears lit on my dash. i see jeeps up to 2007 being included in the latest 7/21/14 recall for "faulty ignition switches that cause vehicles to stall" & i want to ensure that the 2008 jeep grand cherokee's get included in the investigation as a result of my filed complaint. *tr

On june 10 2013 we purchased a 2008 jeep grand cherokee. 6 days after the 30 day warranty expired, was the beginning of a series of incidents that have continued until now 6/3/2014. about a week after purchasing vehicle the motor died in traffic. my wife drove to the dealer and told them what happened. they drove the vehicle but nothing happened and told her it was probably nothing and not to worry. but over time the problem has worsened to the point that it is not safe to drive. the ignition is on, everything is working, then the ignition kicks off, motor dies, and steering is lost and we have to roll to the curb and restart the engine. drive a few blocks or maybe a mile or two then the ignition kicks off again. this has happened once on a freeway here in california, luckily close to an exit where we were able to roll off. now the dealer wants to charge a very large sum to analyze and repair the problem and we feel they knew about this at the time of sale. i see on the net others have the same problem we have with their jeeps cutting off. the dealer informed the consumer the ignition module needed to be replaced. updated 09/03/14
I received in late june a recall notice for my vehicle, titled "safety recall n23/nhtsa 13v-175 reprogram final drive controller module. when i took my vehicle to my local chrysler jeep dealer's auto repair shop, they notified me that the issue is software related and they had not yet received the software patch. i took my vehicle again to them in early july, mid july, late july and early august and still they have not yet received the software patch. *tr
After starting the vehicle it was observed that some of the electrical system, including radio and turn signals were not functioning. electrical eventually came back. this occurred several other times, generally after turning the vehicle off and then re-starting all of the electrical systems came back on. approximately 1-2 weeks after the initial electrical issue the following occurred: while driving in a parking lot at approximately 20 miles per hour the engine suddenly cut out after a "clunk" type of sound. after trying several times to restart, the vehicle did start again and drove normally. vehicle was taken to dealership where code p0688 asd was found. the dealership recommended replacing the asd relay switch. the dealership advised that this relay switch could be the cause of the vehicle dying while driving as well. relay was not replaced as the dealership informed me the part of on national back order. the electrical cut out occurred again on 6/21/2013 but cleared up immediately upon a vehicle restart. on 6/23/2013 while driving on a highway at approximately 60 mph the engine cut out again. the electrical was also out, leaving me with a dead vehicle and no electronics to signal. after several attempts the vehicle was restarted. i believe that possibly the electronic fuel pump was cut out due to the electrical issue. dealership informed me that this part is on national back order, which leads me to question whether there is a larger, unreported issue with this part. if there is not a demand for it, why is it on back order, and if there is a demand, perhaps there is an ongoing issue that chrysler/jeep is not reporting. chrysler is claiming that this switch is not covered under warranty. *tr

Wife traveling with son on fwy at legal speed of 70 mph w/cruise control on, car suddenly decelerated causing a violent maneuver forcing car into neighboring lane and almost crashing. she stated it was as if it suddenly downshifted into lowest gear and brakes applied forcefully. regaining control she deactivated the cruise control and proceeded to destination at 50 mph. took to dealership in davis where it was diagnosed as catastrophic failure of the transfer case which was then replaced at the cost of $2842.75. she retrieved car two days later and proceeded to drive back home (distance is @ 178 mi one way). car repeated sudden deceleration upon entering the fwy and getting up to speed. continued home due to medical appointments to keep. kept cruise control off but called dealership to report that replacing the transfer case did not solve the problem. i pulled codes upon her arriving home and found only code 0430 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold [bank 2] indicating the converter not working to specs. today she was returning to davis to visit with grandchildren and experienced the same situation. at 70 mph car suddenly decelerated rapidly (as if brakes were applied forcefully) and caused her to abruptly move into the lane to her left. she regained control and continued on at 50 mph. the dealership informed her no mechanics would be available until monday but as she has a flight out of lax to catch early monday a.m. she decided to continue on to l.a. without using the cruise control and proceeding at slower speed. the power steering pump was replaced on 4/15/2013 at dealerships recommendation due to a leak and the transmission was serviced in addition to having new valve cover and gasket put on. spark plugs replaced, throttle body and combustion chambers cleaned and pcv valve replaced. internet research indicates this is a repeated problem with the jeep grand cherokee

While traveling on the highway at about 70 mph, the engine stalled and shut down. i had to pull over to the side and restart the car to continue. i've had similar issues with this vehicle dozens of times and i fear that one day it will cause an accident when it shuts down on me. the dealer seems to not know what to do about it and i'm scared that i'll get hurt driving the car. *tr

Jeep stalls when traveling. mostly has occurred when you are slowing down for a stop light but did stall once at speed on the west side highway in new york city. this has happened at least 10 times and has been to the dealership 3 times with no fix in sight. the dealership can not find what the problem is. i have called jeep and they have not been any help. this problem is affecting a lot of jeep grand cherokee as it is well written on the internet forums. a quick google search on jeep stall or hemi stall reveals many people with the same exact issue. *tr
In oct. 2012 the car would not start. no click no nothing. however, the lights, radio, etc. still worked. if you waited about 15 to 60 minutes it would then start. i took it to the shop and they replaced the starter. it ran fine until april 2013. then once again it is doing the exact same thing. now the $638.00 plus the cost i am incurring for rental car. i purchased the wrap warranty and they tell me that because it is attached to the battery cable it is not covered. i have read all over the internet of hundreds of people having electrical problems all related to this wiring harness. i am not a mechanic but i would think that this could cause a fire. regardless, jeep needs to recall these vehicles. *tr
Vehicle stops running with absolutely no warning. this can happen at any speed. lose engine, lights, brakes, steering, and air bags. i no longer feel i can safely operate this vehicle on a highway with multiple lanes. chrysler refuses to replace the part(s) at their cost. they have been aware of this condition in 2008 vehicles since 2008. *tr
I have had my jeep gc lockup. this happened 8 times since late oct. 2012. the conditions are as follows. the engine stops, i have no control, no brakes or steering. 2 times i was driving one of the two i ran into a post. this put a big dent and scratch on my car. the first time this happened i was in a parking lot. in order for me to get the car stated i had to force the key to move. i called chrysler 3 times. they put me on the rush list. this was over a year or 2 ago. they won' even talk to me anymore. once i was doing 70 mph on the expressway. the engine just stopped and i had no control other than braking, but there was no braking assist. i got a recall letter from chrysler about 2 years ago. and still noting what is going on?
While driving my vehicle the gauges started to go up and down, the radio went on and off, the turn signals were interrupted, all the idiot lights came on and went out leaving the engine light on. i called my garage and found out the front control modular is going. there was a recall on 2008's but my vehicle was not included due to manufacture date. my vehicle is only 4 years old and was used previously by diamond chrysler. i have not received any recalls. according to them my vehicle is clean. now i will have to pay close to $1,000.00 to get it fixed. if a recall goes out it should go out to all vehicles in case one such as my vehicle gets missed. *tr
The moving vehicle inadvertently stalls. the stall has mostly occurred on the highway at speeds of 70-75 mph, as well as on-ramps and off-ramps. the frequency of occurrence is approximately (3-4) times per month. when the vehicle stalls i have to quickly put the vehicle in neutral and restart the engine. fortunately the engine restarts immediately and i am able to resume driving. the problem was reported to a local (ri) dealership, who was unable to diagnose a problem/defect. i am apprehensive about driving this vehicle, and i am a police officer with extensive training. i will not allow my wife to operate this vehicle. *tr
Stopped at roadside stand. tried to restart, no dashboard lights, no ignition all windows down inoperable, towed to jeep dealer. it is a faulty wireless ignition code. the receiver in the system that checks for the correct key fob.this has the potential to put the occupants in a dangerous situation. it seems this is a nationwide problem, because the part may be in re-engineering and won't be available for 1- 2 months! one aftermarket supplier told me there are 300 of these parts on back order. sound like a recall to me. *js
My jeep turned off while driving on the highway. i had to put the jeep in neutral and restart it. this has happened about 9 or 10 times. it happens randomly and infrequently. not sure what the problem is but it is definitely scary when it happens. also the key fell out of the ignition once, the car remained running. *tr
Ignition switch does not work property; once turned off- vehicle will not start for day(s) at a time; dealership manager stated to ?use caution? because the vehicle could turn off while driving, and that there is no know fix to recall p57; contacted chrysler for a loaner vehicle, multiple times, and expressed safety concerns especially during the winter month; chrysler is not will to give a loner, and states that the vehicle can be driven, and that a vehicle ignition switch issue "turning off" is not a safety concern, and their policy is to not give loaners for recalls; attempted to get a time from chrysler supervisor without any luck; the dealer has failed to remedy this defect without charge and within a reasonable time. i am unable to use my vehicle while still making payments. *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician diagnosed that the win module needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 102,000.
The first incident was the key getting stuck in the ignition and the dealer replaced an ignition component. after that was replaced on three occasions the engine turned off for now apparent reason. jeep could not determine why and at that point i purchased a new car. i am reporting this now after hearing about the recall for other vehicles which turned off for no reason and had caused injury or death. fortunately i was never in heavy traffic and was able to restart the vehicle. i was advised by jeep to remove any extra keys from the ring but that did not resolve the engine turning off. perhaps there are other jeep owners who have experienced this problem but it was not part of the potential recall. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 jeep grand cherokee. the contact stated that the key fob would not unlock the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery needed to be replaced. the battery was replaced, but the failure persisted and the fob had to be replaced. the failure recurred on three other occasions where the fob had to be replaced. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v567000 (electrical system); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

I am writing to describe 5 incidents within the past year when my vehicle completely shut off while driving. this happened first in may 2012, with a follow up instance in june 2012. after bringing this into the dealership, was told that this was the wireless control module malfunctioning and they replaced. 6 months later, vehicle shut off again while driving without cause. vehicle shut off again october 2013 while driving at a speed of roughly 20 mph, followed by another shut down at 70 mph in late october 2013. i brought this vehicle into another dealership, who told me that they believed this was an issue with the front control module (after i told them the fix to the wireless control module did not work). dealership also advised that a recall on the front control module for issues exactly as i described was in place for 2008 grand cherokees, but not my vehicle in particular. upon further investigation with chrysler, vehicles manufactured dec 4 2007 - dec 11 2007 were impacted by this recall. my vehicle was manufactured dec 3rd. chrysler refused to cover this under the recall but agreed to pick up the majority of the repair cost. my concern is that this issue is extremely dangerous - i could have gotten into an accident any of the five times that my car shut off without warning. it is very clear that my car should have been covered by this recall but was not. i am very concerned for other drivers of a 2008 grand cherokee that fit a similar description of mine - close to manufacturer date of recall but not quite there but having the same problem. *tr
Ignition switch problems - i am now using my third ignition switch. the first one failed instantly, shortly after i purchased this used vehicle. i parked the car in the driveway and when i tried to restart it the switch would not read and accept my key fob. therefore it would not start the engine. car had to be towed to dealer for a replacement switch and programming. the second failed (approximately a year later) intermittently with increasing frequency. when i would turn the key fob to start the car and then release the key to let it return to the "on" position the engine would turn off. sometimes it would stop immediately, but there were other occasions that it would turn off after i started driving. the third switch is now still working but is operation is not as smooth as it was originally. this is the condition that preceded the failure of the second switch. i've been driving for almost fifty years and have never experienced failures as i just described. this is more than an expense and inconvenience. when your car shuts off while you are driving it...now that is dangerous and unacceptable. *js
When going over speed bumps my vehicle stalls. this is the third time this has happened in the last 2 months. i've brought it to the dealership multiple times. each time i've been told there is no problem, or that i need spark plugs replaced, or the throttle body needs to be cleaned....nothing has helped! *tr

Driving approximately 55 mph on interstate, vehicle suddenly lost power and steering control tightened. gas gauge went to e, mph went to 0. vehicle started immediately after it came to a stop. took vehicle to dealership and they could not duplicate the problem. was not satisfied with having my jeep returned to me without identifying solution. mechanic's best guess was that he could replace power module - total integrated power module was what mechanic replaced. well, jeep stopped five additional times in last 21 days. four out of five times, vehicle shut down on a slight decline (neighborhood dip or exiting gas station). vehicle did start immediately after it came to a stop. dealership still cannot duplicate the problem. frustrated with not having my primary family vehicle available. *kb

There is a recall (#89275) for improperly manufactured front control modules on certain 2008 jeep grand cherokees. i own one such make and model (bought it used in june 2011), and am being told that i may have to replace my front control module by a service writer at the local jeep dealer. it would not start this morning at all. since august there has been intermittent malfunctions in the automatic start, navigation system and power seat settings, and parking assist, too. i am being told separately by the jeep national recall center that the recall is vin-specific and does not impact my particular vehicle. is this a legitimate explanation of fact by jeep? *kb
